PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Cardinal Newman High School Community, Over the course of the last four and one-half months, we have successfully reentered the campus and taken possession of our temporary classrooms and office spaces as we work to strengthen our sense of school spirit and seek a stronger and even better future at Cardinal Newman High School.

School leadership is beginning to work on the next steps for identifying the educational vision and capital campaign planning which will afford us the opportunity to rebuild and revitalize the campus environment. Master Site Planning will allow us to develop the necessary facility enhancements and changes in order to continue to provide an excellent Catholic College Prep environment for our young women and men.

The Cardinal Newman administrative team, in partnership with appropriate members of the community, will build out the following four cases for the first phase of the Capital Campaign Plan: • Securing funding for increasing tuition assistance and scholarship endowment • Addressing the critical need for building state-ofthe-art classroom buildings, as well as providing

classroom interior changes which meet 21st Century learning goals for our students; provide library and media center space • Define and build administrative offices • Planning for the replacement of the existing stadium grass field to an all-weather turf surface In collaboration with the Cardinal Newman High School Board of Directors, I look forward to continuing our pursuit of identifying and communicating these initial steps for capital campaign planning. I also look forward to engaging your interest, support and partnership for accomplishing these capital goals and projects which benefit our students today and the Cardinal Newman students of tomorrow.

We remain incredibly grateful for the enormous outpouring of support from parents, alumni and the broader community. Our new work is well underway and each day we gratefully pray the words of Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman, “God shall call on me and I will hear the Lord”.

T

hese are the steps we have followed since October, first with our four satellite sites that kept our school going in the aftermath of destruction.

With help from the parishes and Diocese, classes began quickly, before most local schools reopened.

Our schedule was changed to accommodate the sites and distances, making the best of time available.

Activities were able to continue by the help of other school and community sites, making time for practices and performances.

All of this provided relief and support for our school.

All the while, the CN site was being cleaned, cleared of damage, and prepared for replacement buildings.

Twenty-two portable classrooms were set up, utilities were reconnected as infrastructure was installed, and the interiors were made ready with equipment. This process took dedicated effort and weeks of work each day to get us to our target of a January return, which was permitted on the 22nd of the month. That day brought us into the recovery phase and since then

we have continued to make improvements and have seen growth. The genuine happiness of students and staff was evident; all of us missed being together on campus. Rebuilding began with fixing the damaged classroom building, rooms 8 -15, and the restroom at the end. This project will go into next year, but will hopefully be done by October as we had to wait until summer to do the major work. We also were able to replace the damaged baseball field all-weather turf, dugouts, stands and batting cages.

Getting these back quickly helped bring us closer to our pre-fire abilities. With the other classrooms, Library, and Office, we have begun designing the new buildings that will take us into the future and provide the opportunities we want to see our students enjoy.

This will rejuvenate the school, making us more 21stcentury than 20th, helping students grow at a renewed learning center.

BISHOP’S AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN CATHOLIC EDUCATION Responders In Serving Education – RISE

C

ardinal Newman High School and St. Rose Catholic School were recognized for the outstanding work in sustaining these schools, students and communities during the tragic Northern California Wildfires of 2017 and its aftermath. Following the events of October 9th, a committee was formed called Responders In Serving Education (RISE), made up of members of the two schools. The purpose of the

committee was to work together to form a plan and make decisions regarding “next steps” for the schools, students, faculty, staff, and community, with careful consideration given to the physical needs of these two schools. The Diocese of Santa Rosa is proud to honor the hard work, dedication, and faithful service to Catholic education, which has been so firmly displayed by these schools.

SERVICE THROUGH THE AMERICAN RED CROSS

J

ackson Phillips and Patrick Foley have been amazing in their efforts of supporting our community through the American Red Cross and beyond. Jackson and Patrick have been regularly presenting to hundreds of elementary students throughout Sonoma County, in addition to working with the Pillow Case Project. They epitomize what a Cardinal Newman Service Project is all about and the message of Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman, God Shall Call on Me and I Will Hear the Lord.

Jackson and Patrick were honored at the Red Cross Annual Gala at City Hall in San Francisco on Saturday, March 17th.

ASSOCIATED STUDENT BODY (ASB)

ASB

is loving being back on campus! Thus far, ASB, along with Sophomore Class Council, hosted a successful Welcome Back Dance in February, and a rally in March to kick off Spring. At the March rally ASB hosted a Powder Puff volleyball game with the senior vs. junior male students. In May, the senior and junior female students continued tradition with the annual Powder Puff football game. Other exciting events that took place on campus were the Arts Alive! rally, Prom, and the upcoming end-of-the-year event! Lastly, ASB 2018-2019 has been selected and has been shadowing this year’s ASB as they begin to plan for next year!

BUILDON NICARAGUA TREK 2017 VANESSA KASHANI, KAITLYN RYAN, JORDAN KLEIN, MADI MELLO

D

uring our Junior year of high school we started the first chapter of BuildOn at Cardinal Newman.

BuildOn is a non profit organization that works to end the cycle of poverty, illiteracy, and low expectations through service and education. We decided to participate on the global level, fundraising over $20,000 for the construction of a school in Las Neblinas, Nicaragua.

In July 2017, we went on trek to Las Neblinas and spent a total of nine days on the building site working alongside the community members, tying rebar, digging trenches, and pouring cement. We lived with host families of the community in their clay houses and they kindly took us in and treated us as their own children. Each night we bonded with our families over the dinner table and played games with the children.

Even though the language barrier made it more difficult to communicate, we were able to understand each other in the simple ways. We laughed when a chicken would run into the house squawking or if our four year old host brother did something funny. It was the small things that made us realize we are so similar in many ways, despite the fact we lived very different lives. In the mornings we would wake up and make tortillas with our host mom, and we learned about what role the women in their community had.

During the day, we spent eight hours building the school as well as learning about their culture and the community’s other daily activities. Coffee beans are the main crop that is grown in that region and their livelihood is dependent on the coffee farmers. We were taught how to pick coffee beans, dry them, and the process to turn the beans into coffee.

This experience impacted us in an unexpected way.

We went there with the mindset to make a positive impact in other people’s lives; however, the people of Las Neblinas made a larger impact in our lives. No matter what age, each member of their community was extremely hard working and gracious. They lived a life of simplicity and radiant positivity that inspires

us to incorporate these qualities into our own lives.

They allowed us to gain a new perspective and outlook on life and the things we may take for granted each and every day without knowing. The purpose of this service trip was not to build a school for the community of Las Neblinas, but to work in solidarity with them to provide an impact that will last through their future generations. We contributed in building the foundation of their school, but the education that it will provide is the foundation for success and innovation in the future.

CANSTRUCTION

I

n December 2017, CN students participated in their firstever “Canstruction” event! As our student body was still spread out at the four different satellite school sites due to the fires, CN students donated bags filled with canned goods and with these donations designed and built a 3-D display!

The Sophomores, who donated over 40 bags of food and built a castle, won most creative! Freshmen designed a Christmas Tree, Juniors a Tower, and Seniors a Snow Man. All the canned food donations were sent to St. Vincent de Paul for the Christmas holiday giveaway. Congratulations to our students for their great effort in supporting the greater community of Sonoma County.

CONGRESSMAN HUFFMAN

I

n Spring 2017, Mr. Argenti’s freshman environmental science classes wrote letters to Congressman Jared Huffman about environmental issues and other issues they were passionate about.

The congressman’s office wrote back suggesting he come for a visit to CNHS. On March 2, 2018, Congressman Huffman visited our campus, met with classes and hosted an informational forum and lively Q & A in the gym. Thank you, Congressman, for taking the time!

GRACE GARZINI – SPECIAL OLYMPICS VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

E

very year SONC (Sonoma County Special Olympics) has six Volunteer Award categories, three of which honor a Coach/Volunteer with Special Recognition.

Volunteers are nominated (through their County); nominations are received from all of Northern California (Fresno to the Oregon border) and many are submitted. There is a panel of judges that review all nominations and information submitted to choose a volunteer to receive these awards.

Grace Garzini has been chosen by Special Olympics Northern California to receive one of the three Volunteer of the Year Awards given throughout

Northern California. Grace will be honored with her award during the Summer Games Opening Ceremonies in Davis on June 22, 2018.

Grace has been chosen to receive the Rookie Volunteer of the Year Award. This award honors an individual who has made significant contributions in their first year with Special Olympics. This is a special recognition for the volunteer who may have not been with the organization for very long, but has embraced its mission fully through active leadership of, or involvement in, programs or development.

A Sonoma County volunteer has only one other time been honored with a Volunteer of the Year Award from SONC. The competition is very stiff, as there are a lot of great volunteers out there.

COSTA RICA TRIP JUNE 8-JUNE 23, 2017 TUIS, CARTAGO PROVINCE, COSTA RICA SINOLI, CHIRRIPO MOUNTAIN REGION, COSTA RICA

O

ver the summer of 2017, Cardinal Newman students and teachers spent 16 days in Costa Rica, the group consisted of students from all four Cardinal Newman grade levels. After landing at the airport in the Costa Rica capital, San JosĂŠ, we travelled by bus to a small town of less than 1,000 people called Tuis in the Cartago Province. We had all of our luggage with us, as well as two 50-pound bags of donations made up of clothing, soccer balls, and school supplies. We arrived at our homestays with 2-3 students per house. One of the coolest parts of the trip was actually living with a friend or two in a loving Costan Rican home where Spanish was the only language spoken. My family had a 17 year old boy who was beginning to learn English, so we had an awesome time teaching each other our languages.

After a day spent white water rafting all the way to the coastal province of the country, we went to bed exhausted. The next day, we got up early and hopped in the back of a cattle truck which took us to a town called Grano de Oro. From this mountainous town, we hiked for 4 hours into the bottom of a valley, arriving in the village of Sinoli in the Chirripo Mountain Region. The people living here were indigenous to the country and welcomed us into their school and invited us to play soccer. We played in field where the borders of the field were jungle. It was truly amazing!

After 3 days in this village, we hiked out of the valley and went back to Tuis. We spent the rest of the trip cleaning up the local mission, spending a night in a hotel on the Caribbean coast, and attending a Spanish language academy called CISA.

AP CAPSTONE COMES TO CARDINAL NEWMAN

T

his year Cardinal Newman launched the elite AP Capstone Program, currently offered in only two percent of high schools in California. AP Capstone consists of two college level classes, AP Seminar and AP Research that facilitate the development of independent research, collaborative teamwork, advanced writing and presentation skills. Dr. Maryanne Berry, chair of the English Department, wrote the application to College Board to have our school participate in the program. “I described Newman’s Community-Based Service Learning Program (CBSL) and demonstrated how our current curriculum develops the foundational skills that would make Capstone a natural extension of coursework in English and Religion.”

AP Seminar began the year with research activities that prepared students for presentations on topics that they selected in teams. Topics included: the use of educational technology, police brutality, maternal healthcare and robotic neurosurgery. The goal of

the project was to investigate the issue from multiple perspectives and propose solutions to an identified problem. The second major project requires students to write a research paper on an individually-chosen topic. According to Jacob Bentham ‘18, “The project provided me the chance to work in a team, as well as individually, to investigate real world problems and learn what we can do to solve them.”

This summer Dr. Berry will participate in a week-long training in order to offer the second year course, AP Research, in the fall. Students earning scores of 3 or higher in both courses and on four additional AP exams of their choosing, will receive the AP Capstone Diploma. Dr. Berry believes that Newman students can achieve excellence through the program. “A recent report by the ACT indicated that 90% of our tested students are college ready in English Composition.

I’m excited to develop curriculum that builds on our students’ intellectual strengths while inspiring them to be guided by natural curiosity and gospel values.

FALL DANCE PRODUCTION

T

he Cardinal Newman Dance Program presented “Enchantment”, a contemporary dance show inspired by classic fairytales directed by Gabrielle Thompson.

Seventy dance students performed a variety of styles including contemporary, hip hop, and jazz dances depicting classic Brother’s Grim and Hans Christian Anderson stories, such as Little Red Riding Hood, The Ugly Duckling, The Little Mermaid and Sleeping Beauty. The show ended with a grand finale piece performed by the entire cast. Students danced to the song “Rise”, by Katy Perry, honoring the courage and perseverance of the community during the challenging months following the Northern California wildfires.

Without the generosity and support from Bernadette Alverio, owner of The Movement Lab Dance Studio in Santa Rosa, the CN Dance Program would not have been able to perform. Bernadette Alverio donated studio space for the dancers to rehearse each Friday, and this provided students with a supportive environment to continue working on the show. Performances were held at Sonoma Country Day School on December 11th and 12th at 7:30pm.

CARDINAL NEWMAN WOMEN’S SOCCER TEAM HONORED BY SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES

T

he Cardinal Newman women’s soccer team was honored on Saturday, March 31, 2018, by the San Jose Earthquakes at Avaya Stadium. After the Cardinal Newman Women’s Soccer season ended in a Division III championship, San Jose Earthquakes Executive Vice President, Jed Metee, commended the girls on the strength the team showed since the October Tubbs fire, where 6 of the 20 players lost their homes. Congratulations to the team on the special recognition!

WASHING OF THE FEET 2018

E

ach year on Holy Thursday, all CN students, faculty and staff infiltrate the community and do service work in lieu of a regular school day. This year we focused on the service partnerships where seniors have been actively volunteering their time involving their service project efforts. As a new option, we invited students to sign up for service sites that interest them, and in some cases, sites where service projects may be developed. Students were involved in beach clean-up, bathing animals at the shelter, making survival bracelets for military members, tutoring students at various schools, clean-up at multiple land preserves, spending quality time with those affected

by Alzheimer’s, packing food for the hungry at local food banks and pantries, and much more. Cardinal Newman students, faculty and staff really made a difference in our community this Lenten season!

JUNIOR RETREAT: IDENTITY JANUARY 28-29 & MAR. 18-19, 2018

T

he Junior Class Retreat served to strengthen the friendship and community of the Cardinal Newman Class of 2019. The students discussed and shared about who they truly are - inside and out.

On Sunday afternoon, members of the junior class arrived at Cardinal Newman. The students met their retreat small groups and enjoyed lunch together before departing for CYO Camp in the beautiful redwood forest of Occidental. The groups took advantage of the nice weather and spent the afternoon hiking and getting to know new things about one another.

Sunday evening was spent with students sharing about their identities and experiences through games, projects and activities. The students enjoyed being able to relax, unwind and enjoy time together in play. Each small group, led by a volunteer faculty or staff member, served as a safe place for students to engage with each other in deep discussion. Senior students from the Campus Ministry Class shared their experiences with the juniors and led a question and answer time. The evening culminated in a prayer remembering all those who have touched our lives.

Monday began with a nature morning prayer and time for the students to go out on their own to contemplate and pray in the beautiful natural surroundings.

Over the course of the rest of the day, the students discussed who they are as a class and took time for relaxation. The retreat ended with an affirmation activity before the students headed home a refreshed and more closely-bonded class community.

SENIOR RETREAT: “IMMERSE” FEB. 2-4, & APR. 15-17, 2018

O

ur Senior Class Retreats took place at Westminster Woods Camp and Conference Center in the beautiful redwood forest of Occidental. The theme of the retreat was “Immerse”, a call to the seniors to follow the example of Christ and fully-immerse themselves in the journey of life. The students were encouraged to reflect on the meaning and purpose of their lives and spend some time in self-discovery, as well as community building. Volunteer teachers and faculty poured much time, attention, and care into the students. They led small groups, gave witness talks to the large group and were wonderful, guiding presences to the seniors.

The students began their retreat Sunday at Cardinal Newman when they met their small groups and enjoyed lunch together before departing for the retreat center.

The students arrived at the redwoods early enough to take advantage of the beautiful weather and hike with their small groups. That evening, following games and dinner, the students began to immerse themselves into the theme of the retreat as they took time to name the values and people that make up their foundations. An evening prayer in which each person shared a personal goal or expectation for the retreat set the tone and reinforced the theme of Immerse.

Monday brought time to spend outdoors in prayer and building trust with peers as they took turns guiding each other in a blindfolded trust walk. Later that afternoon, students continued the bonding by asking and answering deep questions in pairs. The evening culminated in a Reconciliation Service, led by chaplain, Fr. Moses Brown, a campfire and a very special night prayer tradition.

Tuesday after lunch, the students reflected on their future selves and their retreat experience. The groups particularly enjoyed affirming each other one-by-one and playing under the redwood canopy together. Students returned to their day-to-day lives refreshed after spending some time in prayer, personal reflection, and community with classmates.

OXFORD SCHOLARS

T

his year’s gathering, delayed from November, gave our thirteen select scholars their evening of sharing and explaining in the Fireplace Room on March 19, 2018. Their topic was on Divisions, ones that they see keeping people apart and preventing understanding. With the help of emeritus teacher Jeff Scharfen as moderator, they gave an overview of their papers, submitted the week before and posted on-line, and answered questions he posed to them, probing for more depth. The exercise is one of critical thinking and following out a line of reasoning by research. Having to answer questions in a public setting of fellow students, parents, and guests, tests the depth of knowledge and confidence yet is in a supportive group. Before they find themselves in college situations like this, the program helps them grow and improve.

WOMEN’S VARSITY BASKETBALL

T

he 2017-2018 Cardinal Newman High School Varsity Girls Basketball embraced the challenge of finding their new identity after losing several impact players to graduation last year. They hit the ground running, going 3-0 in their very own Cardinal Newman Classic Tournament with wins over St. Mary’s Berkeley, Woodside Priory (who would go on to represent Northern California in the Division IV State Championship) and Eastside Prep. With the CN Gym inaccessible, this year’s tournament was hosted at Santa Rosa Junior College. Seniors Maiya Flores and Arie Searcy were named to the All-Tournament team, along with Junior Avery Cargill and Sophomore Anya Choice. The following week at the Laney College Shootout the Cardinals defeated Valley Christian who

would go on to become the 2018 Division II Northern California Runner Up. The month of December was also highlighted by a second place finish in the Diamond Division of the West Coast Jamboree. After defeating St. Francis (Sacramento) and Sacred Hearth Cathedral (the Northern California representative in the 2018 Division I State Championship) the Cardinals lost a hard-fought game to Dimond (the #1 ranked team in Alaska) in the Championship.

The Cardinals once again dominated Sonoma County winning the North Bay League and North Bay League Tournament Championships for the fifth year in a row.

During league they also participated in the St. Mary’s Stockton High School MLK Showcase, one of the most prestigious showcases in the country.

After winning a Division IV State Championship in 2016, a Division IV NCS Championship in 2017, and a trip to the Northern California Open Division Finals in 2017, the Cardinals were placed in Division III for the 2018 North Coast Section Tournament. They rolled through the first three rounds of sections with wins over Las Lomas, San Marin and Eureka. They went on to lose to Salesian by 4 points in the NCS Division III Section Championship at St. Mary’s College of CA. After sections the Cardinals were selected as the #7 seed in the Northern California Open Division. The Open Division represents the top 16 teams in the state of California, regardless of division or school size.

This is the second consecutive season that the CNHS Varsity Girls Basketball team has been selected to the

Open Division and they are the only Sonoma County team to compete at this level. They traveled to #2 seed St. Mary’s Stockton in the opening round and were defeated by the national powerhouse.

The Cardinals graduate four seniors this season: Maiya Flores, Arie Searcy, Tal Webb and Aliyah Consani-Baker. These seniors have been instrumental in building the Cardinal Newman High School Varsity Girls Basketball Program. In addition to winning State and Section championships, the class of 2018 has also won four consecutive North Bay League Championships, four consecutive North Bay League Tournament Championships and has a career 64-0 record against NBL opponents. We appreciate all that our seniors have given to the program over the past four years and wish them the best of luck in college and beyond!

WOMEN’S JV BASKETBALL FROSH GOLD BASKETBALL

D

espite all nine players being freshmen, the Women’s JV basketball team finished their season with an impressive overall record of 13-10.

Plagued by injuries and sickness throughout most of the season, Coach Margaret Curzon only had one game where all nine girls were available to play.

The Cardinals started off their preseason strong by capturing first place in the Napa High Tournament and second place in the Cardinal Newman Sweet 16 Tournament. League play began after the holidays and the team finished with an NBL league record of 6-8, with nail-biting one-point victories over Casa Grande and Rancho Cotate.

T

he freshman gold team finished this season with an overall record of 15-11. Coach Sexton is very proud of the players for working so hard this season and always giving their best effort in practices and games. The team finished very strong winning 5 out of their last 7 games, including a 5-game win streak towards the end of the season. The highlight win was against Benicia late in the season, on the road, where CN came back in the 4th quarter to win by 2.

Coach Sexton wishes to thank the parents for being extremely supportive and positive all season. He’d also like to thank his first-year assistant coach, Michael Francis, for doing a tremendous job coaching the boys and making them better basketball players and better young men.

T

he 2017-2018 Junior Varsity basketball team compiled a 16-10 record overall and finished 3rd in the North Bay League standings behind Ukiah and Windsor with a 9-5 league record. Coach Vice and Coach Guillen would like to thank all the players for their dedication and determination throughout the season and commend them on how they dealt with the many adversities we all faced in the wake of the Tubbs Fire. The coaches wish them the best going forward, both on and off the court.

MEN’S VARSITY BASKETBALL

T

his year’s men’s basketball team compiled a fine 21-7 overall record. They were the champions of the 50th Annual Rose City Tournament, defeating San Marin 70-39 in the title game. The team finished 11-3 in a very competitive North Bay League and were defeated in the NCS Tournament by NorCal DII Champion, Alameda. The Cardinals were led by the MVP of the Rose City Tournament and First Team All-NBL selection, 6’4” junior Nathan Capurro; leading scorer and Second Team All-NBL, Brad Morato; and Senior Captain and All-League Honorable Mention, Steven Zichichi.

T

his year’s Frosh Cardinal Basketball team finished with a record of 20-6 and a league record of 13-1, tying Montgomery for the league championship. As the season progressed, the team played better and better, with an exciting win against Montgomery in overtime winning 41-40. The last game of the year was another thriller with an overtime win against Casa Grande, coming from behind, which clinched the league championship with Montgomery.

Coach Ching believes this was the most caring bunch of boys he has ever had in all his years of coaching. Everybody liked each other and would cheer each other in games and even during practice. It was a unique year for Coach Ching coming back from a 2-year lay-off and he’s glad he was able to coach at Cardinal Newman again.

VARSITY WOMEN’S SOCCER JV WOMEN’S SOCCER

T

he Varsity Women’s Soccer Team had an extraordinary year which started with many ups and downs in the North Bay League. While every game was competitive, the Cardinals did not always find themselves on the winning side. After finishing third in the North Bay League, they qualified for NCS in the fourth division. After beating Marin Catholic High School 2-0, they fell to Branson High School in the semifinals 1-0. They then qualified for the Norcal Championship and was placed in the third division.

The Cardinals went on an unprecedented run beating three higher-ranked opponents. They beat Center High School in Sacramento in the first round 3-1. They then went to Kezar Stadium and beat Sacred Heart High School 1-0 in the semifinals. In the Norcal Finals, they once again traveled to Sacramento where they defeated Bradshaw Christian High School on their home field in a game that went into overtime, 2-1. The win gave the Cardinal girls their first-ever Norcal State Division III Championship.

The girls completed an improbable season which spanned over 25 games, all of which were played on their opponents’ home field. Congratulations to the Cardinal Newman Women’s Soccer Program!

T

he 2017-2018 season was a challenge for the JV women’s team. The first winter soccer season, the devastating fires and the loss of our campus, and a horrific flu season all took their toll, yet the ladies persevered, and bonded to become a solid force. There were ups and downs, tears and laughter, all shared by the team as one, and all dealt with as a team. There was definitely many entertaining moments, but the highlight of the season came one cold, crisp, early Saturday morning at Rancho Cotate. There was a bench populated by the walking wounded, all unable to play, and only 9 players able to take the pitch against the 11 from Rancho, plus Rancho’s able subs. Nine warriors, backs to the goal, heels dug in, and cheered on by those unable to play, took to the field, and amazingly it all clicked, as they dominated play. At one moment, the ladies played with eight for a few minutes, and the tempo never changed. Ranch could do nothing to stop this team, and in the end it was an amazing 4-1 victory. This was truly a moment to remember in a season they’ll never forget!

“

This year was my favorite season of soccer I have ever played. Many factors contributed to this. First of all, it was my senior year. Ever since I was a freshman, I had the goal of being the captain of the varsity soccer team one day. This year, I was extremely happy to take on the role of captain. As a senior, I got to help my teammates out on and off the field. When the fires happened in October, it was an extremely difficult time in my life. I lost my home and my school and had little to look forward to besides my friends and soccer. The upcoming soccer season was one of the only things I was excited about. Although the fire quite strongly affected us all, it certainly brought us closer together. As our four grade levels at Cardinal Newman were split up around the county, we rarely saw one another. Once we got onto the field,

we connected. I can safely say my teammates are my best friends. Our coaches did their best to get local fields for us to play on, but oftentimes we had to travel just for practices. This meant that the whole soccer community had to come together to accommodate rides. Given all this, the season was certainly unique.

I would not let the fires destroy something I had been looking forward to for so long. My previous soccer years at Newman were also incredibly fun. However, our small soccer program struggled to find success.

Last year, my junior year, we finished the bottom of our league with no wins, thirteen losses, and a single tie.

I also felt that we put in an incredible amount of work last year, but that did not show in our results. Coming into this season, it would have been easy for all of us to let our heads down and give up on this season, as we had only three seniors and a lot of inexperienced youth. However, our coach was the driving force behind us and he pushed us to an incredible season.

We finished 4th place in an extremely tough league and made playoffs. We continued to surpass all expectations when we won Newman’s first playoff game in eight years. Although I was sad to say goodbye to the season, in reality, I was happy. I know that I was able to contribute to our success. I will genuinely miss everything this soccer program is about, I am looking forward to hearing about their success in the next few years. The work that everyone puts in will certainly pay off in the upcoming seasons Padraig Lafferty (Senior, Team Captain)

T

he 2017-2018 season was a challenging, yet encouraging one for the JV Boys’ soccer team. The boys showed great character and perseverance to do their best despite some difficult results, particularly during the middle of the season, and showed definite signs of progress with good results against some very strong teams in the last few games. The squad gelled extremely well, with the more senior players helping to incorporate the freshmen into the team. Team spirit remained strong throughout the season - for many of the players this was their third season together - and the team can be proud, knowing that they gave their all and improved as individuals and a team over the course of the season.

he Alumni Association Committee meets monthly to discuss ways of involving our alums of all ages, and ways to support the school through the Association. Many events are supported through this association including our Fun in the Fall and Polenta Feed, Career Day, Golf Tournament, Quarterly Alumni Socials, and Homecoming festivities. The committee is always looking for new alumni involvement. H

ank Miller, Cardinal Newman Class of 2015 and a local college student, has purchased Road Butler. Hank previously worked for the business and when he was approached about buying Road Butler, Hank jumped at the chance. Road Butler is a delivery service that delivers food from local restaurants to residents of Petaluma. Deliveries are $13 from 3 pm to 9 pm and $10 from 10 am to 3 pm with flat rate of $10 for seniors. The Road Butler can be reached at 707-217-5238.

he Cardinal Newman Alumni Association has worked hard to establish the Alumni Legacy Scholarship Fund to support children and/or grandchildren of Cardinal Newman alumni with annual scholarships. This year, Ken Molinaro ’72, challenged his classmates to raise funds, as a class, to benefit the Thomas DeMeo Endowment.

The challenge was for fellow classmates to donate an amount consistent with 72, representing the Class of ’72. Donations were received in the amount of $72 and $720. THANK YOU Class of 1972 for your continued support!

he annual Spring Legacy Gala gathered families, alums and friends at Vintners Inn to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th. This year’s event was another wonderful success for the school. Auction bidders were lively, raffle sales were brisk and all had a wonderful time.

Thanks to the generosity of the guests in attendance that evening, the Final Paddle Raise which supports the All-Weather Turf Stadium Field brought in $70,000!

While we anticipate the fund raising for this project to carry over several years, the Gala guests were committed to raise AT LEAST as much as the students did during their Jog-A-Thon efforts last fall.

WE’RE BACK SODA ROCK CELEBRATION GATHERS FAMILIES TOGETHER FOLLOWING THE DEVASTATING TUBB’S FIRE

O

n February 10th, 2018, just 15 days following the students’ return to campus and 15 weeks following the most devastating fire to rip through Santa Rosa destroying a third of the Cardinal Newman campus and the homes of over 100 current school families, our community gathered at Soda Rock Winery to celebrate the first step toward returning to a sense of normalcy.

Thanks to Ken & Diane Wilson, owners of the winery,

for their gracious offer to host our event, our school parents and alums gathered for the evening to share stories, reconnect with friends and share some wine and good food. Our Dads’ Club, along with dads from the St. Ignatius High School Dads’ Club, prepared a wonderful barbecued meal with desserts and plenty of wonderful Wilson Wines.
