Prayer of Gratitude As this issue of Trinity emphasizes Gratitude, I would like to share this poem-prayer by our patron, St. John Henry Newman. I hope that St. Newman’s words will resonate with you as you reflect upon the ‘afflictions’ that our school has undergone since the Tubbs fire.

It speaks to the fact that, even in all the destruction—‘dust’—that our school has experienced, we have much to be thankful for.

Since the fire, we have been blessed by countless friends who have come to our door for comfort and to help with our rebuild. We can all be grateful to the good Lord who has carried us through these past years along His narrow way, and we rejoice that hope continues to thrive as we move forward into the future.

I have been welcomed with open arms and everyone is working to support me in this time of transition. There is a warmth and sincerity in this community that I am already appreciating.

I am thrilled to have students physically back on campus and in our classrooms. Our teachers, staff, and coaches have experienced students’ laugher, energy, and enthusiasm for learning which was sadly forgotten over the previous 15 months. Because the 2021-2022 school year has had a resemblance of normalcy, CNHS has thoroughly enjoyed welcoming our community members back to school for in-person events including Fall and Spring Artistic Performances, Athletic Events, our Alumni Homecoming Gathering, etc. With the return of these events please take this opportunity to connect or to reconnect with CNHS. This edition of The Trinity is dedicated to gratitude. Specifically, CNHS’s gratitude to the many benefactors, families, and individuals who have supported this school throughout the years.

In my first official communication, I stated, “Each day I pause upon arriving at our soon-to-be-completed classrooms. These classrooms are not just a phoenix rising from the ashes they are also a testament to the incredible love and dedication expressed by the Cardinal Newman High School community.” Three months later, our teachers and students are celebrating the completion of our new classrooms, art room, prayer garden, 4 offices, and 2 faculty workrooms. Most transformative is the courtyard has already housed a whole school mass, our Homecoming Rally, and our Homecoming Dance. I cannot wait for CNHS to experience the continued use of this space and the immeasurable happiness this space will help create.

STUDENTS WELCOMED BACK... ...TO NEW TWO-STORY CLASSROOM BUILDING OPENING!

A

s Wright Contracting worked on the last building details in preparation for the final inspections for TCO (Temporary Certification of Occupancy) for the new classroom building, the students and teachers held classes remotely for two days in September. This allowed a long weekend for our IT department to ready the new building for WIFI and cabling necessary for the transition from our portable classroom locations into the new building.

On September 22, at 8:15am, we welcomed our students and teachers to the new facility that replaced all the classrooms lost by the 2017 fires. 18 Classrooms, an art studio and kiln, counseling offices, two staff rooms and Cardinal Newman’s first elevator are all part of this new facility.

TWO-STORY CLASSROOM BUILDING BLESSING CEREMONY WITH BISHOP VASA

O

n September 30, 2021, our Cardinal Newman community gathered to celebrate the opening of the new Two-Story Classroom Building. Faculty, staff, Board of Trustee members, students and distinguished guests celebrated liturgy, with Reverend Bishop Vasa in the new courtyard.

As quoted from Bishop Vasa, “We ask God’s blessing on this center of seeking, learning and teaching what is true, so that the students who come here can be empowered to live their lives more fully, completely and faithfully”.

Following the Mass, Bishop Vasa visited each of the 19 classrooms, blessing each one and sprinkling holy water at each entrance. The opening of this new building marks a milestone for the school community who lost 22 portable classrooms, just 10 days shy of 4 years ago, during the 2017 Tubbs fire.

STUDENT LIFE CENTER & LIBRARY GROUND-BREAKING CEREMONY

C

onstruction officially began on June 29, 2021 with the ceremonious ground breaking event with help from our community leaders. GMH Builders, under the watchful eye of Josh Griggs has been selected by the Santa Rosa Diocese as this new facility’s construction company. This important structure in the rebuild efforts following the 2017 fires will mark another milestone in Cardinal Newman’s history as we work to build back a campus better than what the fires took away.

PLANS FOR A NEW CHAPEL

I

n the heart of the campus, just north of the existing gymnasium, sits a fenced area ready to accept a new Cardinal Newman Chapel. As our mission states, we educate students in the wholeness of mind, body and soul. We have worked hard to provide beautiful classroom facilities for the ‘mind’. Our athletic facilities have been a focus for improvements which focuses on the ‘body’. Now, it is time for Cardinal Newman High School to have its own carefully planned and designed Chapel.

Under the creative and watchful eyes of Mr. Chris Lagos, Diocesan Architect and Mr. Josh Griggs of GMH Builders, our new Chapel design is nearly complete. The new Chapel will include eight large stained-glass windows, statues of St. Angela Merici and St. John Henry Newman at the entrance, and a 15’ tall cupola towering high above all other structures on campus. Its interior ceiling peak reaches 23 feet and pews provide seating for 100+ guests.

The Student Life Center & Library, designed by Quarttrocchi Kwok Architects, will house our new student café dining facilities with indoor and outdoor seating, student lounge for casual student gatherings with couches and comfortable furnishings, library and learning lounge with small and medium study rooms,

Campaign efforts to fully fund this this endeavor will begin after the first of the year. Like all of the other

improvement projects on campus, it is our hope and prayer that this Chapel project be fully funded.

ach year, our Parent Association plans and hosts a wonderful feast to express their gratitude to our faculty and staff. As with previous years, the event was fabulous!

The fall decorations were beautiful! Ricky’s Eastbound catered the delicious luncheon and our parents provided wonderful desserts for us. It was a great kick off to the holiday season. A special Thank You to all the parents who made sure this was another beautiful event!

Ms. Balaguer teaches English as well as all levels of Latin at Cardinal Newman.

Wednesday Bogel Human Resources Wednesday began working at Cardinal Newman High School in 2021. She brings 25 years of HR experience, mostly from the tech arena. Some of the closest people in her life are Cardinal Newman and Ursuline alumni, and they are almost as thrilled as she is to have joined in their school family. In her free time, she enjoys taking long walks with her German Shepherd, reading, cooking, and enjoying all that the wine country has to offer.

Cristian Calderon

Mr. Cheney has worked in Catholic ministry, faith formation, and educational settings since 1999. He earned a BA in Religious Studies from Santa Clara University, and his MA in Philosophy from the Dominican School of Philosophy & Theology in Berkeley, among other ministry and catechetical certifications. He is happy to join the Cardinal Newman community as the Christian Service Coordinator, as this brings together both his educational background and his parish ministry experience. While working in catholic apostolates and parishes Mr. Cheney developed a multi-day pilgrimage service retreat aimed at discipleship formation; deepening participants’ walk with the Lord in concrete acts of charity and sincere worship. He brings a similar spirit and aim to his Christian Service work at Cardinal Newman with the aim of growing in the theological virtue of charity. Mr. Cheney is a husband and father of three, and enjoys painting, woodcarving, reading, and playing guitar for his family.

Teacher Theology Department & Assistant Football Coach Jeff was born and raised in Sunnyvale, CA having graduated from Saint Francis High School in Mountain View, and the University of San Francisco with a degree in Economics. He also holds a Master’s Degree in Theology. Prior to working in Education, he worked in corporate finance for Apple Inc. in Cupertino. Before coming to Cardinal Newman, he taught Theology and coached football at Saint Francis High School. He and his wife, Michelle have five daughters: Laura (16), Claire (14), Mary (13), Caroline (11), and Bernadette (10).

Dave Fletcher IT Department Dave Fletcher is the newest member of the Cardinal Newman IT department and is on campus 10 hours per week. Dave has been working in IT since 2011 with experience including seven years at Rincon Valley Christian K-12 School and with a variety of non-profit clients through his IT consulting practice.

As a former collegiate tennis player and coach, Dave hopes to help coach the men’s tennis team in the Spring of 2022.

Teacher Theology Department Mr. Girolo was born and raised in Petaluma, where his family still lives. He grew up attending St. Vincent Elementary School and later St. Vincent High School, from which he graduated in 2015. While attending SVHS, Mr. Girolo felt a strong calling to pursue the priesthood and give his life to the service of the Church. Thus, after graduation from high school, Mr. Girolo entered seminary for the Diocese of Santa Rosa. He first attended St. Gregory the Great College Seminary located in Nebraska. He graduated from there in 2019 with a Bachelors of the Arts in Philosophy. After that, he began attending St. Patrick’s Seminary and University in Menlo Park, CA to gain his Masters of Divinity, a prerequisite to ordination.

Part of the program there includes a “Pastoral Year,” which takes place after 2 years of theological studies have been completed. During this year seminarians go to live and work in parishes so as to get hands-on experience (essentially an internship year). For Mr. Girolo, this is that year and part of his assignment includes teaching at Cardinal Newman. Mr. Girolo has greatly enjoyed his time here at Newman and looks forward to the rest of the year.

Dr. Marcel A. Hetu is currently teaching U.S. History and coaching cross country at Cardinal Newman. He has taught at the elementary, secondary, and university level for over 40 years. Additionally, he has been an administrator at all those levels. In 1980, Hetu was the Olympic Track Coach for Saudi Arabia, and Director of Outreach for Special Olympics International in Washington, DC.

Felicia Lukins Teacher Math & Science Department Mrs. Lukins is a graduate of California State University, Chico with a bachelor of science in Agriculture Science. She started her teaching career as a student-teacher at Elsie Allen High School in Santa Rosa. From there she took a position at Everett Alvarez High School in Salinas.

After three years she moved back to Sonoma County to teach for 6 years at Sonoma Valley High School, teaching a variety of Agriculture courses ranging from Ag Business, to Ag Chemistry. While teaching at Sonoma in 2016, Mrs. Lukins was voted a finalist teacher of the year for the League of California Teachers. Mrs. Lukins has attended and presented at several teacher leadership conferences including the National Academy Foundation. When she’s not teaching, she loves to travel with her family and hike with her dogs.

Nicholas Reynolds Principal Nicholas is the principal at Cardinal Newman High School. He has spent 18 years in the Santa Rosa Diocese as a teacher, coach, and administrator at Saint Vincent de Paul High School.

He is inspired by the 23rd Psalm - the Psalm of David which states, “my cup runneth over.” This psalm reminds Nicholas to be thankful for all that life has to offer...both the blessings and the obstacles. He is blessed to be a husband, a father of two children who attend Saint Vincent de Paul Elementary. Nicholas has a passion for teaching, the Roman Empire, curriculum development, and most every board game.

Richard Sanchez, Head Varsity Football Coach comes to Cardinal Newman from Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida. Coach Sanchez has been a football coach and physical education teacher since 1992, most recent as Offensive Coordinator Assistant Head Coach at Southeastern University. Before coming to Southeastern University, he coached DB’s and was Special Teams Coordinator, under Rocky Long at San Diego State University. Prior to moving back into the college coaching ranks, Coach Sanchez was the Head Football Coach at St. Augustine High School in San Diego for nine years. He also played football for and graduated from New Mexico State University. He has an outstanding track record in coaching and bringing the Saints team to several CIF Championships. Coach Sanchez tells us: “I am great at encouraging people, mentoring young men, and teaching the importance of hard work and leadership. I enjoy working with boosters, alumni, and parents. I wish to bring this experience, knowledge, and passion for teaching young men the great game of football and to your campus. I have heard wonderful things about your sports programs, and community.”

In addition to coaching football, Coach Sanchez will also serve as CN’s Associate Athletic Director and Summer Program Assistant Director.

Kai Seale Teacher Science Department Ms. Seale is a Santa Rosa native who went on to receive a BS in Biology from UCSB in 2017. After finishing her degree in Santa Barbara, she returned to her hometown to get a teaching credential and Masters in Teaching from USF in 2020.

Ms. Seale joined the Cardinal Newman teaching staff shortly afterwards, and has been loving the Science department ever since.

Laila Kamaruddin Thomas Teacher Math & Science Department Laila’s teaching experience comes from middle school and high school as well as standardized test prep in multiple subjects. She has taught at the precollegiate upward bound program at SSU and the college immersion summer fuel program at UC Berkeley. She has a BBA in marketing, management, and computer information systems & operations management from LMU. An MBA in marketing and management, a MIT in applications development from AIU. She has also successfully pursued many post grad certifications to enhance her career at UCLA. Laila has held notable positions in marketing, PR, and advertising; she was recognized in 2016 by The International Women’s Leadership Association. However, her true passion lies in teaching where she hopes to dedicate her service towards for many years to come and feels blessed to be at Cardinal Newman.

Maria Vera Vega Teacher Modern and Classical Languages Maria is a member of the Modern and Classical Languages Department as a Spanish Teacher. She went to private school all her life. She also attended St. Mary’s College in Moraga where she graduated with a B.S. in Psychology. She graduated from Sonoma State with a Teaching Credential in Spanish. She is a native Spanish Teacher from Colombia. In her free time she likes to hike and swim.

n 1976, a young artist, Cuban born and Los Angeles raised, came north to take over the Art program at Cardinal Newman. Frank Lorenzo, who had begun the Arts, retired; he was also an architect and had taught drafting. The new Frank, Mr. Guillen to hundreds of students and players, also continued drafting, along with drawing and painting.

He would go on to add Video Arts and begin Newman News, replete with a studio live broadcast. Current Art Chair Morris Acevedo remembered when Frank proposed an Arts festival, for all the programs, and Arts Alive was born. Frank Guillen was always creating, trying new ways, encouraging students to discover their view, find their form; he prized form and function, he had discipline and free flowing, he wanted students to thrive.

Frank also loved sports and coaching. A proud Dodger fan in the land of Giants, he took the teasing and returned it, later supported by other blue boys Mike Healy and John Contreras. He organized the faculty softball team, was player-manager for years, outlasting younger teachers, giving it up to go on to golf. As a basketball coach, Frank helped the CN program over three decades, he urged and encouraged the young players along. He liked the competition and helped organize a Freshman Tournament at Christmas time, as there had not been such a chance for them. He saw a need and filled it.

Frank had been drafted and sent to Vietnam in the late 60’s; he had great stories of his experience, some difficult and thoughtful, others hilarious and self-deprecating. He served when called, came home

and went to college with determination. In later years, he reconnected with fellow soldiers of his unit at reunions, coming to see how events had helped shape him and encouraged him to find truth. For Art was truth for Frank, the highest expression of what he felt and believed.

From it, his faith and hope came out. Frank was a teacher, coach, and artist; he was also a family man: son, husband, father, and grand-father. He was proud of his daughters both going to Ursuline and terribly proud his grandson Jordan graduated from Newman.

At the Golf Tournament in June, he was well and happy. It was our loss that in July, though vaccinated, he contracted Covid and could not overcome it, though he fought it for weeks. He will be missed and remembered, not just for 36 years of teaching and coaching service, but for the person he was and remains.

From Matt Vukicevich: “I loved the way Frank greeted all of his students at the door, by shaking their hand, calling them by name and asking how they were (sometimes inquiring about a recent game they played). “ From Mary Euphrat: “Frank was an inspiration to all.

He cared so much about his students. He was more than a teacher, he was a coach and a mentor. He would come to my office and say “Mary, do you have a minute? I am concerned about a student.” He was honest and genuine. He was tough and he held a line but he was greatly loved and admired by his students and our faculty. He will be greatly missed.”

UPCOMING WCEA/ WASC ACCREDITATION Areas of Strengths:

n March 6-9, 2022, Cardinal Newman High School will host an accreditation Visiting Committee as they review our school’s Self Study and Educational Improvement Plan, requirements of maintaining our dual accreditation by both the Western Catholic Educational Association (WCEA) and the Western Accrediting Commission for Schools and Colleges (WASC). The WCEA describes this process thusly, “Accreditation has to do with the determination of the quality of a school’s overall educational program. The Catholic high school examines itself in order to define what is working well for the total school community and what it needs to do better in order to meet the learning needs of the students. The school prepares a written Self-Study that identities school strengths and critical growth areas. These critical growth areas form an action plan that the school community addresses in the next six-year cycle of accreditation.”

The CNHS accreditation process began nearly two years ago and has been led by Mr. Mario Alioto, Ms. Monica Mertle, and Ms. Christina Weaver.

Throughout this process, WCEA encourages CNHS to remain committed to improvement and to act with integrity throughout the creation of the self-study report. Central to this improvement, the WCEA asks, has CNHS been inclusive, honest, and thorough? I attest to the integrity of our process - we have surveyed Parents, Alumni, Students, Faculty, Staff, and Board Members to gain a better understanding of our school community, as well as, involving each of these constituencies in necessary discussions. Most importantly, this process has allowed us to identify our areas of strength and our areas of growth. Chief among them are:

In the spirit of remaining committed to improvement, CNHS is now working to develop our Educational Improvement Plans (EIP) which will address our areas of growth and guide us into our future as College Preparatory Catholic High School. Our EIP’s will focus on the student experience here at CNHS and I have no doubt that with the help of our faculty and staff, we will develop a series of realistic and attainable goals.

ASB WELCOMES BACK OUR STUDENTS

T

he mission of the Cardinal Newman Academic Support Center (ASC) in collaboration with the Cardinal Newman Counseling Department is to provide support needed to allow all students to become successful learners. This support includes helping students to become self-advocates, while discovering and utilizing the support services that will aid them in their education at Cardinal Newman and beyond.

The Academic Support Center (ASC) at Cardinal Newman High School is open to the entire Cardinal Newman community. We want to assist as many students as we can. Our major focus is to assist students with a variety of learning and/or attention differences who can meet the academic demands of a college preparatory environment. Students in Study Skills classes learn skills necessary for success in high school and beyond: organization of information and materials, self-advocacy, time management, and other skills and strategies. Students in Directed

Studies receive the extra help and support they need to achieve in their classes. We provide printing services as well as educational technology advice and assistance to students.

The center is staffed by Mr. Alioto, Mrs. Kraft and Mr. Hetu, who work together to support the students who come in, whether in a scheduled study time or on a drop in basis. We offer a Peer Tutoring program to provide additional support during Advisory Period and After School office hours.

MEET YOUR 2021-2022 ASB STUDENTS!

his year the ASB (Associated Student Body) Leadership welcomed back students to Cardinal Newman with hope for a full year on campus. Although we are still masked due to COVID, there were many smiles as the ASB Leadership Class played games, toured the school, and taught the new class of 2025 the Cardinal spirit. The 107 entering freshmen came to school for a full day of activities. ASB President Maguire Hansel spoke to the freshmen about her experience and what to expect from their four years of high school.

In the past, the “orientation” day of school was only meant for freshmen, but this year ASB and incoming principal Nicholas Reynolds wanted to personally welcome the sophomores, juniors and seniors on campus. Mr. Reynolds, Dr. Linda Norman and different members of ASB prepared speeches and set a successful tone for the academic year 2021-22. It was a fun and informative day!

CHRISTIAN SERVICE UPDATE: GROWING IN CHARITY

T

he theme of the Sophomore Retreat - #BeHoly - in many ways, encapsulates the goal and purpose of our Christian Service program. As the Christian Service Coordinator I had the privilege of contributing to this retreat some reflections on how this theme informs what we do in Christian Service. We reflected on the concepts of holiness, of being set apart for the service of God, and of being associated with the transcendent goodness of God through our participation in His plan of love. We reflected on how God is calling us in our service to others to consecrate or offer this service as a prayer of love to Him, who is the author of all goodness and who Himself is charity (divine love). And so, as Cardinal Newman students we do more than simply ‘fix’ problems in the world, but we see not only problems, but persons deserving of love, empathy, and dignity.

We seek to love God by also loving our neighbor out of love for God. And this not only when it is convenient or comfortable to do so, but consistently, faithfully, and honestly, as God Himself is consistent, faithful and true. We seek to grow in charity and so to grow in our reflection of God’s own perfect character: To #BeHoly!

On October 6th Cardinal Newman was pleased to host sixteen service organizations from our community for an in-person Service Fair. During the fair our students were able to interact directly with community service representatives and make connections that will lead to service opportunities and outreach. We are grateful for all that these, and other organizations do in the community for the good of others, and we join them in our service out of love of God! This year we are happy to regain many of the opportunities that were suspended due to the need for social distancing over the past couple of years.

As organizations open back up for volunteers our students are again out and about in the community performing acts of generosity and charity in this same spirit. From working with Mr. Corriveau and Fr. Plass over the summer in the Faith & Action course, to devoting many hours of service at Ceres Community project, to bringing equestrian therapy to those in need at Giant Steps, to feeding the many still devastated by economic need with Redwood Empire Foodbank, to coaching young or disable students in sports camps or Special Olympics, our students are rising to the occasion and being of service.

Finally, this year’s senior class, the Class of 2022, has embarked on the much anticipated journey of their Senior Christian Service Projects. Having navigated the sometimes confusing and challenging world of communication with prospective mentors, most of whom are busy non-profit professionals, their projects are taking shape with amazing examples of leadership, devotion, virtue, and generosity. Some examples include the work done by: Angie Renfree, as she works to organize and coordinate vital blood drives on the CN Campus collaborating with Vitalant; Katelyn Vaugh, Sally Brown, and Alanah Roseman, who have been engaged in health and nutrition education for grade schoolers at St. Eugene’s Catholic School; Eternity McDonell, working to coordinate CPR & AED training for CN Students, preparing

them to be ready and at the service of others in an emergency; Fabian Guerrero, completing a successful on campus food drive and in person service at the Redwood Empire Food Bank; Maguire Hansel, who is working with Ceres Community Project and helped to represent the organization during the service fair to our underclassmen; and the list goes on. There are many steller and heart warming projects and missions that our seniors are engaged in, and in doing so they are fulfilling the command of our Lord given in the Sermon on the Mount, when He said, “...your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father” (Matthew 5:16).

And so, with the light and grace which comes only from God through the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, we pray that our students, and our school, may be a city set on a hill, and a light that our Lord Himself may find worthy to place on a lampstand by His own gracious hands, to glorify our “heavenly Father.” We pray that our students continue their journey of service to the ultimate end of a life of holiness; to become the saints that God has created them to be, and in this to discover their deepest purpose and true happiness: To #BeHoly!

COLLEGE COUNSELING

W

e are so thankful to be working directly with our students in our office on campus! College Counseling during the Pandemic has been a challenge but our students are making the most of it. Many of the colleges across the country have gone test-optional, test-flexible, or test-blind for college admissions. Colleges are looking at applications with a holistic approach which can include Cardinal Newman’s school profile, reviewing the courses a student took, reading the student submitted essays, teacher and counselor recommendations, honors and awards, and extracurricular activities.

This year we offered a school day test for the SAT and ACT in October for our current seniors and we will be offering both of these tests to our juniors in the spring. This is a great opportunity for our current juniors and seniors to take a test during the school week if they want to. The seniors that did take it in October were appreciative to have the ability to take it. There has been a huge decrease in the number of schools in Sonoma County hosting the exams on weekends as a result of the Pandemic so this was a great solution that our administration approved.

We are thrilled to have our College and Career Center in room 216 in the new classroom building. We have already hosted more than 50 college representatives with in person and virtual meetings. We have a large television monitor that we can hook up to virtual visits and students can sit in the

center as a group to interact with the college representative on the virtual visit. Seniors are coming in daily to get help on their college applications before they submit. It is a busy time in our office!

We are excited to introduce our students to our new college and career software program as of April, MaiaLearning. It is a wonderful, easy to use platform that connects with colleges so that our students can apply and we can send documents on their behalf directly through the software. There is also a career planning component which has assessments that help define career pathways and interests. Students can learn what is required for college majors and careers.

We were one of two schools in Sonoma County to offer a college fair for our students. This fall we hosted an out-ofstate college fair at Jake’s Place during lunch. Students of all grades could meet with the college representatives and learn about the colleges. We also hosted a test information night with Compass Education Group to help parents and students learn more about the changing environment with SAT and ACT testing. Lastly, we were excited to host an on-campus and in-person Case Studies event in the ACC and our new classrooms. Parents and students were invited to attend and learn how college admissions officials read college applications and decide on accepting, denying, or waitlisting students. It was an informative night and we were so happy to be “in person” on campus.

ur Oxford Scholars, so named to honour St. John Henry Newman: Trinity College graduate, Tutor at Oriel College, Vicar of St, Mary Magdalene, Oxford University Church, gathered on November 23rd to present their thesis on “Great Teaching” and defend their conclusions.

In addition to their research on the topic, they were asked to view four movies: Dead Poets Society, Mr. Holland’s Opus, Stand and Deliver, and The Emperor’s Club, looking for what makes great teaching. Their papers are posted online for review; see what they had to say.

ACADEMIC COUNSELING’

F

or Cardinal Newman’s Counseling Department, the best word to describe this year has been “transition.” While all school years require students and teachers to transition in various ways, transitioning from hybrid learning back to the full-time classroom environment is perhaps the most challenging transition of all. Our approach to managing this transition has been to seek normalcy and practice gratitude. Previous counseling practices, such as suicide prevention and anti-bullying presentations, were reinstated as full classroom guidance as opposed to shortened Zoom presentations. We continue to provide personal check-ins with students and ongoing grade monitoring when needed.

While these practices may seem simple, after a year of being physically disconnected, we are very happy to return to a

sense of normalcy. Of course, this transition has not been easy. Although students returned to campus with exhilaration and true happiness to see their peers and teachers face-toface (with a mask), anxiety, fear and the unknown still crept its way into many people’s lives leaving students with a lot to adjust to and manage. In these moments we encourage gratitude to maintain wellness as these past few years have made our community more resilient than ever.

As students and families continue to heal from traumatic experiences, counselors are here to help support needs in and out of the classroom, keeping everyone thankful for the small things and building confidence to accomplish big things.

FATHER/SON EVENT, OCTOBER 3, 2021 O n a lovely Sunday morning, Fathers and Sons gathered for photos, liturgy, and games here at school as we were able to host again after a one year Covid hiatus. Fr. Plass said the Mass in the ACC, open with good airflow, assisted by the three generational levels of Marty McCormick, Joe Foppoli, and Lucca Foppoli. After Mass, Steve Diehl gave a thoughtful reflection on the relationship and importance of sons

and fathers. Next, we were off to the Stadium Field for fun. Ryan Corriveau set up and ran the soccer skills, including a penalty kick shootout; Laura Jorgenson helped me with sack races and Tug of War, which had hilarious action. Leaving the glory behind, lunch was held at the Covered Eating Area. Special thanks to Gayle DeRutte for her organizing of the day together and being there to keep things smooth.

his year ASB created a magical Under the Stars Homecoming. We had a record turnout, a full moon, and made a whole lot of memories. We are so grateful that we got to celebrate the dance despite the challenges of our past few years, especially in our newly built courtyard. The highlight of the night was

having people get up on the stage and lead the Soulja Boy Dance. Even though celebrating it outside was different we embraced the opportunity to dance while staying safe. We couldn’t be more happy with how the dance turned out. The spirit, the passion, and the love shot through the stars!

T

his fall, we were fortunate to take the Freshman Class to Jack London State Park in Glen Ellen.

The theme for this year’s retreat was “Caring for God’s Creation.” The day started off with a Mass celebrated

by Father Plass, and then the kids set out via yellow school buses to the park. A gorgeous, warm day greeted the class of 2025 as they arrived in one of the special places in Sonoma County. There were three tours given by Mr. Vukiceich, Mr. Argenti and Kristina Ellis, who is the education director for the park. Each

student participated in all three tours and probably walked 8-9 miles by the time he day was done! Many people know Jack London as an author of such novels as White Fang and Call of the Wild, but don’t know that Mr. London created the first sustainable farm west of the Mississippi over 100 years ago. The setting is truly magical and is often called “God’s Country.” Nature is truly alive there and the students learned that man can care for God’s Creation, and live in harmony with it.

n September, the Sophomores retreated to Bishop’s Ranch in Healdsburg and were challenged to #beholy. Our students needed to pull away from the noise of the world around them to consider how their social media posts, messages to a friend, or actions could include the caption “#beholy.” Retreat leader and Diocese Youth Ministry Director Stephen Morris pointed out how their world celebrates instant gratification with filtered posts and endless notifications, but on retreat they had space to slowly

and vulnerably consider the small ways they could be the best version of themselves.

Their day included small group sharing, personal witness testimony from Senior class leaders, reflection writing, and an examination of Saints who lived up to the challenge of Being Holy. The girls and boys each had a day to themselves and were able to celebrate Mass with the former Cardinal Newman Chaplain Fr. Moses Brown.

he 2021 football season has been a fantastic experience! The Varsity football team is a young and talented team led by a group of dedicated seniors. The Cardinals finished 8-4 as the NCS DIV runner up, a great achievement for a young team. The season has been highlighted with early season victories over Vacaville and Vintage High School, with some key players leading the effort on both sides of the ball. Coach Sanchez is grateful to the coaches and athletic support staff, amazing parents, and especially the players for their commitment to a successful season.

V football finished 3-6 with a closing quality win over West County High School. The team has worked hard to develop throughout the season, having weathered the challenges associated with the COVID pandemic and a new coaching staff. The JV football team is a talented and resilient group that will continue to develop into a championship caliber team. Coach Egan would like to thank all the coaches and athletic support staff for their hard work, the wonderful parents for supporting their sons throughout the season, and especially the players who come to practice every day willing to learn and compete.

T

he 2021 Cardinal Newman Varsity Volleyball team has had one of its most successful seasons in program history and has a current record of 295. The Cardinals started the preseason with big wins over Division 1 and 2 schools including Bishop O’Dowd, Redwood, Campolindo, Berkeley and Lowell High School. After a tough preseason schedule the Cardinals headed into the league with confidence and a determination to win the NBL. The Cardinals finished league play with a perfect 10-0 record and earned the 1st place North Bay League pennant. The team is led by senior captains and outside hitters Cassie Taylor and Kimi Waller. Kimi leads the team in kills averaging

FRESHMAN VOLLEYBALL 14 kills per match and Cassie is averaging 10 kills per match. Freshman setter Julia Waller is averaging 33 assists and junior Ali Farquhar is averaging 7 kills per match. The #1 seeded Cardinals won the North Coast Section Division 4 Title with a straight set victory over Marin Academy, the school’s first Section title. After being moved up to Division 1 for the State Tournament, they lost a 5 set heartbreak in the playoffs This talented and experienced team has worked very hard all season and the coaching staff is very proud of their growth and accomplishments on and off the court.

his year’s 2021 freshman volleyball team had a good season and a lot of growth. They worked very hard at improving their volleyball skills and it showed as they competed. The team improved from

basic skills to running a more advanced offense with confidence. The coaching staff is very proud of their great improvement and hard work.

T

he Cardinal Newman Junior Varsity Volleyball Team had a very successful Fall 2021 season, despite only returning one player from the COVIDshortened Spring season.

Overall, the team finished with a record of 20-6. This team also finished tied for 1st in a highly competitive NBL-Oak Division with a record of 9-1. In addition, the team also had two top-5 finishes in their two tournaments this season, including a hard-fought 2nd place finish at the Norcal Invitational Tournament.

The key catalyst to this run was steady serving and passing, which led to quality swings from a balanced attack in the front row. Rarely does a team receive such consistent contributions from all 13 players.

All in all, this was a very memorable season filled with lots of fun, growth, and competitive spirit.

He also manages our Cardinal Newman Athletics Social Media presence and maintains our new Cardinal Newman Athletics Website. Dave’s expertise in Sports Marketing and Sports Broadcasting will help us to continue to grow Cardinal Newman Athletics and provide our students with a unique and memorable high school sport experience.

We look forward to expanding our Sports Broadcasting Program in the coming months by providing internship opportunities for our students in the fields of Sports Broadcasting and Sports Journalism.

CARDINAL NEWMAN BOOSTER CLUB We are thrilled to announce the revitalization of the Cardinal Newman Athletics Booster Club!

Our Booster Club, led by President Ted Grafe, has been meeting regularly since the start of the school year to discuss and explore new ways to grow Cardinal Newman Athletics and improve our students’ sport experience. Our Boosters are incredibly active in our sport community.

They support our coaches, volunteer at games, help with team meals, assist with Senior Night festivities and so much more! The Booster Club is also working on organizing a Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament on Saturday, April 9th. This event will include dinner, drinks and a silent auction and all proceeds will benefit Cardinal Newman Athletics.

Tickets will go on sale in January through the Advancement Office. We hope to see you there!

This team had 3 returning players who had played at the JV level two years before this season and the rest of the team were all brand new to the sport. The team grew every day and game to become a competitive team that could challenge our league by the end of the season. This young team shows promise for the return of a winning team at Cardinal Newman. Led by Junior Nate Neihaus (1st Team All League) and Riley Drake (2nd Team All League) the Cardinals Men’s Team finished 5th in league.

The team finished with a record of 16-10 and was given the 7 seed in NCS and finished second in the Vine Valley League. The Cardinal Newman team had three first team all league players: Julia Lubas, Sophia Green, and Hayden Hansel. The team also had two second team members: Abigail Cunningham and Meghan Do. The Women’s team will be losing 7 seniors this season but will be returning several strong players including the team’s leading goal scorer in Hayden Hansel. The team looks to continue its success going forward with a deep group of underclassman looking to step up into important roles vacated by the outgoing seniors.

ardinal Newman Cheer has provided not only an opportunity for athletes to show their spirit, athletic skills, and school leadership-but it directs and impacts a positive school culture that is shaped by its school community and the cheer world. As noted by Bill Seely, President of USA cheer Corporation, “[Cheerleading is] a unique activity that helps bring together school and community in a very unique way – around sports.” Over these past few years-Athletes have participated in Welcome back CN Events, Cheer Factor (Rob and Joss in the Morning” Froggy 92.9), Heroes of October, and with La Crema Winery in their Sonoma County Wine Auction fundraiser for charitable causes, including post-fire housing, and Breast Cancer awareness fundraisers. Cardinal Newman cheer has pushed and worked hard in spreading the High School spirit program by connecting the crowd to the game, a community to a school, and the Newman spirit to groups beyond the Newman community.

This Summer, Cardinal Newman Cheer brought together our local cheer community by hosting two Summer junior Camps. Coaches and athletes came together to provide a fun cheer camp experience that focused on building strength, skill, and confidence while instilling the importance of respect and sportsmanship. We had over 30 cheerleaders attend and perform in front of parents, other summer campers and coaches.

Athletes then went on to perform at the first two Varsity football games with much success.

Newman Cheer looks forward to working with these promising athletes again next summer.

The summer also brought new changes in the coaching staff. Coach Elizabeth Stimmel, over these past eight years, is honored to have reshaped the Cardinal Newman cheer program by instilling the importance of: integrity, work ethic, mutual respect, accountability, and a high level of commitment. This year- Mrs. Stimmel transitioned to Cheer Director and introduced new coaches:

ith only 5 returning players from last year’s team, including the loss of top returning singles player and Co-Captain, Sydney Bellman (12) to a preseason injury, first year Head Coach, Rich Aguirre, and Assistant Coach, Benjie Swenson-Aguirre, knew 2021 would be quite a challenge for the Women’s Varsity Tennis Team. Not Surprisingly, the young team of 22 energetic and determined players were up for the challenge, finishing in 3rd place in the North Bay League with an overall record of 8-4. The team showed much improvement up and down the lineup throughout the season as 6 players earned All-League honors. Singles play was led by Kaylin Smith (11), Isabella Blakely (11), Co-Captain Colbi Jacobs (12) and Suzanna Hextrum (10). Doubles was led by Hannah Salisbury (11), Bridget Salisbury (11), Catalina Coleman(11), Makena Mwiti (11), Isabella Finnterty (10), Madailein Hargarten (11) and Mackenzie Dennis (10).

All-League honors were earned by the following players: All-league First Team Singles: Kaylin Smith, All-League Second Team Singles: Isabella Blakely, All-League First Team Doubles: Bridget Salisbury and Hannah Salisbury. All-League Second Team Doubles: Catalina Coleman and Makena Mwiti.

In the postseason NBL singles tournament, Kaylin Smith won the Consolation flight and Suzanna Hextrum finished in the top 8. In the NBL doubles tournament, CN was represented by Kaylin Smith, Isabella Blakely, Catalina Coleman, Makena Mwiti, Mackenzie Dennis and Suzanna Hextrum with Smith and Blakely taking 4th place honors.

“A

strong showing in the Division 1 NCS Championship was a great way to cap another dominant season for the Cardinal Newman Girls Golf Program. Competing at the Div 1 level for the first time in school history, juniors Gabby Sinatra (73) and Lillie Dayton (81) led an overall team effort, finishing with a total of 477 which placed 14th out of the 21 participating teams. Cardinal Newman was the smallest school competing (by enrollment) with nearly 700 less students than the next smallest school.

The team would like to thank all our friends and families, especially team parent Carrie Smith, for supporting us on and off the courts throughout the season. With only 2 seniors graduating this year, the future looks very bright for the Women’s Varsity Tennis Team!

Competing locally in the NBL Oak Division, Cardinal Newman finished a perfect 8-0, winning by an average margin of 49 shots. As a result, Lillie Dayton (40.5 average) and Gabby Sinatra (40.43) were named coleague MVP’s and Tori Leighton (43.5) was named to the First Team All League. The excitement, positivity and enthusiasm for golf shown by ALL members of the team from day one was a reward in itself and speaks to the high character of these girls and the CN family.

The future looks bright and this year’s 16 player roster is reflective of the overall growth in Golf. Coupled with the loss of only 3 seniors and a solid incoming freshman class, 2022 will have high expectations for CN. A huge thank you to The Fountaingrove Club and Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club for allowing us to use your facilities throughout the season, junior golf at all levels can not succeed without the support of local courses. And finally, the deepest thank you to our 3 seniors who will be dearly missed, Izzy Wright, Jocelyn Thomas and Tori Leighton, your contributions are irreplaceable.”

CROSS COUNTRY

T

he 2021 Cardinal Newman Cross Country season has been a very positive and productive one going into the league championship on November 13.

The girl’s team has recorded a record of 4 wins and 1 loss, and is in second place. It is one of the school’s best records in Cardinal Newman Cross Country history. The team is led by one senior, six juniors, and one freshman. At the beginning of the year there was only one girl on the team but throughout the season the team has grown in numbers of runners and with their progress and success. The boy’s team has a record of 2 wins and 3 losses, and is in 4th place.

There are 4 seniors, two sophomores, and 2 freshmen.

Like with the girl’s team, we started with one boy and have seen it grow in participation number and in progress all year long. Both teams will be moving

on to the North Coast Section Meet in Hayward on November 20. Coaches Hetu and Halpin have truly enjoyed their time with these excellent scholar athletes.

odd Bruno, spent 20 years as a federal law enforcement officer with the National Park Service mostly in Yosemite. He moved up to Glacier Bay National Park, 3.3 million acres of Alaska’s Inland Passage, in 2007 and transitioned to a boat captain position, running the park’s research vessel for 7 years. Now he works out of the park carpentry shop, creating and fixing. In a few years, he hopes to retire and find some work using the skills he developed.

eturning to coach the Freshmen Volleyball at CN this Fall, Jade Buhman shows she continues to understand service and sport. A four year letter winner here for Coach Anna Waller, Jade went on to UC-Davis, where she played club and graduated this past spring with a degree in Sports Medicine.

She worked as a trainer for the Aggies and credits Monica Mertle’s class at CN on Athletic Training as the start of her Sports Medicine journey. She is preparing to apply to Medical school in the Spring, working at the Pulmonary Clinic for experience. She also plans to reconnect with the Redwood Food Bank, which was her CBSL project, to support again.

he new Executive Chef at Bricoleur Vineyards is our own Evan Castro, class of ‘11, who was Sous Chef previously. They pair food and wine with care, making for a special experience. When asked how he was doing in this challenging role, he replied: “I am doing well, been a crazy year with the whole pandemic experience. STEPHEN TOMASIN’S OLYMPICS

T

okyo 2020, held in July 2021, came with challenges. Covid testing, staying in a team bubble, required to leave after your competition was over, were not the usual experience of an Olympic Games but for Stephen Tomasin, ‘12, it was the Olympian time of his life.

IN THE NEWS

A long time US team member for Rugby 7’s, the fast and quick playing game with contests around the world, Stephen had just missed out on playing in the 2016 Games in Brazil. When matches and practices were suspended in March 2020, first he was locked out, feeling locked up, and left to wonder if his Olympic dream would come true.

In Spring of 2021, the team was able to get back to training together, staying together, and hoping they would be on a plane to Japan in the summer. Arriving in Osaka, they had a training camp for both the Men’s and Women’s 7’s teams, then went to the Olympic Village for the Opening Ceremonies.

Waiting for their turn in the parade, Stephen said he was with the US baseball and basketball teams beforehand, sharing the excitement of the Games that had been suspended and then restored. Athletes respect athletes, and the famous and the unknown shared photos and happiness together.

When their opening match against Kenya came, they found themselves facing off in an empty stadium, where instead of crowd roars, they could hear the other team clearly. Digging

deep, they won a physical game. Next, they knocked off Ireland, guaranteeing an advance into the final round; South Africa edged them in the group final though and they faced Great Britain in the quarterfinals. After leading at halftime, the British team came back to win 26-21, with the US missing out on the medal games. Bouncing back by beating Canada, they faced South Africa for 5th place but came up short.

While disappointed with the team’s overall results, especially when they had been close to a medal, Stephen said it was a wonderful experience being an Oympian. He plans to be playing again in Paris 2024 as the US reloads with new players, as many older ones step out. He also wants to be playing in LA 2028 when the Olympics come back to California. As he is only 27 now, he feels he is coming into his prime and is ready to take an increased leadership role. Having overcome injuries, he is working on maintaining fitness and health, staying safe, and supporting his teammates.

As Cardinal Newman’s only international rugby player and Olympian, Stephen has shown what is possible with effort, determination, and self belief. He remains the modest person he was in high school; he is also highly confident in his ability and appreciates the support he received here, where after a standout football career, his rugby began.

omecoming 2021 returned with beautiful weather on October 15th. The pregame gathering began at Jake’s Place, hosted by Advancement, Terri Derr and Kathy Badger ‘83, who provided food and fun, thanks to celebrity chefs Lance Badger ‘83 and Jim Derr. Over 50 alums gathered to enjoy a barbequed meal before heading to the Homecoming football game. Tours of the new classroom building, with help from Board members, were available, allowing the recently opened rooms to be viewed. The game went well for the Cardinals, 34-10 over Maria Carrillo.

Halftime saw a parade of golf carts, one decorated by each class, proceed ahead of the four cars from Hansel Autogroup carrying the eight Queen nominees, escorted by their fathers. A red rose revealed the selection of Ari Johnson ‘22 as newest Homecoming Queen. The next night, the Dance was hosted outside in the new courtyard.

Our Cardinal Newman/Ursuline Class of '81 held our second afterreunion Brew Bike Tour in Downtown Sacramento. After the three-hour drinking establishment tour, the group headed to dinner where the fun and great conversation continued. Classmates and their spouses traveled from as far away as Morgan Hill, Lodi and believe it or not, Thailand. The rest of us were local but one thing is for sure. The class of '81 is a tight knit bunch!

A

s CN’s first class graduated in 1968, Selective Service still conducted a required military service lottery with possible deferments. By 1973, this draft process, which had existed since 1940, was ended and a voluntary Armed Forces began. Over nearly sixty years, CN graduates have served the United States of America in a variety of roles and branches. We have worked over the past year to identify all CN students with military experience; the list is still incomplete and we would appreciate being informed of anyone who is missing from the list, when they served, and with whom.

We have included some pictures, and hope to have more to share in coming editions.

On Veterans Day this year, speakers from our community came to explain their service roles to current students and why it mattered. Our thanks to: Pat LaFortune, retired CN teacher, Army, Vietnam Vet; Jeff Scharfen, retired CN teacher, son of a Marine Officer, father of a Navy Officer daughter; Phil Kreck, CN ‘97, West Point ‘01, Army, Iraq Vet;

Hal McGuirk, US Navy, CN ‘68, enlisted in 1969 to avoid being drafted and be able to pick his branch of service; after boot camp, he was assigned to electronics training. His first duty station was in Winter Harbor, Maine. A radio listening station for the Soviet bloc countries, his specialty was cryptography equipment repair. Then he went to USS Kitty Hawk, where he was transferred to the Information Warfare detail, until he returned to civilian life, after 6 years in the Navy.

Bill Driscoll, US Coast Guard, CN ‘71, enlisted 1972 and served at various duty stations in Bodega Bay (twice), San Francisco (twice), Monterey, San Diego, Pensacola and Panama City, FL, and finally Portsmouth VA, retiring in 1995 as a Chief Boatswain Mate. He drove rescue boats and was 2nd in charge of the 82-foot Cutter in Bodega Bay in the late 80s. He also patrolled on larger cutters around the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, and Atlantic Ocean, doing Law Enforcement and other missions. Retiring to Pensacola FL, he ended up being the Dockmaster for Naval Air Station Pensacola, for 10 years dealing with Naval Ship movements. Currently, he is fully retired and lives in Pensacola with his wife Irene.

The Cardinal Newman Veterans Plaque recognizes “those who served in times of Peace and War”; it was planned and paid for by a Government class in 1991, with an olive tree; a flag was installed in 2008 to recognize a Veteran father.

Chad Dorr, US Naval Academy, ‘88, CN ‘84, commissioned as a Naval Helicopter Pilo t, retired as a Commander in ‘09, after a twenty-one-year career that took him to places he had never expected to go.

Alfred Shwayhat, US Navy, CN ‘84, a Captain, naval flight surgeon, surface warfare medical department officer and Fleet Marine Force medical officer. Chief of endocrinology at the Naval Medical Center San Diego, he previously served as the Health Services Department head aboard USS Carl Vinson, from which he led medical relief operations for the carrier task force in the immediate aftermath of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. He remains dedicated to his patients and his children, and is our highest ranking Alum.

Served as a security contractor providing diplomatic security from 2016 to ‘19 in the Middle East, currently a Tactical Medic for US Government.

Post 9/11, deployed to Djibouti, Africa in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, supporting the Joint Anti-Terrorism Task Force in Eritrea, Ethiopia, Yemen, Egypt, and Morocco. Lt. Colonel Andrew D’Ambrogi, USMC, CN ‘98, is the Commanding Officer of VMA 211, one of the new F35 jet squadrons. He is currently deployed on a joint venture with the Royal Navy on the new aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, a first-time joint venture with the US. They departed Great Britain for a world tour through the Mediterranean, Indian, Pacific, and Atlantic Oceans, in May ‘21. Previous to departure, the Queen herself paid a visit to him and his UK counterpart before they embarked (see photo). His father is Mark D’Ambrogi, CN ‘77, and he is married to Anastasia Mahoney D’Ambrogi, UHS ‘98.

Theresa Piasta, US Army, UHS ‘02, Army ROTC at MIT, graduated Wellesley College, 2006 Active Duty, promoted to Captain in 2009 in Iraq, 2010 entered Reserves until 2012. Becoming a VP for JP Morgan in Investment Banking, she is currently a Senior Solution Engineer with Salesforce.

Frank Piasta, US Army, CN ‘05, after graduating from Yale, entered Officer Candidate School in 2011, assigned to Fort Stewart, GA, deployed to Afghanistan in 2013 as the commander of an infantry platoon. He achieved the rank of Captain with Ranger Tab, leaving active duty in the fall of 2014 and moved to Dallas, TX with his wife Christina. They have a two-year old daughter. Frank is a Vice President at CBRE Capital Markets.

Brennan Would, US Navy, CN ‘10, First Class Petty Officer, part of Naval Special Warfare (NSW) as a Special Boat Operator (SWCC) since 2012, has been assigned overseas 3 times, Persian Gulf, Arabian Sea, the Pacific, deploying again in October ‘21. He stated: “Between the camaraderie with the people I work with, the places I have been, and the work we have done operationally, I have been fortunate and honored to be where I am today.”

Zac Ragsdale, US Navy, CN ‘06, is a Petty Officer First Class with 8 years of service, stationed at Coronado, CA. He has deployed twice to the Middle East and once to Africa. He married his wonderful wife Jenna in October of 2018 and they currently live in San Diego with their two dogs.

Bianca served 6 years in the Army Reserves as a Civil Affairs Specialist based in Mountain View, CA, also two rotations at Fort Polk, LA and one rotation at Fort Irwin, CA, providing realistic pre-deployment training scenarios for units, including those from foreign countries, training alongside the British Army.

Tyler served a total of 7 years as a Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic stationed at Fort Hood, TX. Two of those 7 years he spent deployed overseas. A Sergeant, his time was cut short due to an injury he sustained on his second deployment. He was medically discharged with honors June 2021. They married June 15, 2019 and welcomed their son Brantley Andrew Stromer on September 10, 2020 at Fort Hood.
