PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Members of the Cardinal Newman High School Community,

T

his Trinity issue offers you a wonderful perspective of the ongoing educational endeavors at Cardinal Newman. In particular we are highlighting the enormous enthusiasm our students experience as they learn and participate in our Visual and Performing Arts programs. We know that the Arts enriches our students’ lives while teaching them the value of communication through various forms of perceptions and allowing us to gain a better understanding of the world around us. Our Visual and Performing Arts program promotes the self-direction of our students and encourages them to sharpen their critical and creative skills.

By the time you read this Trinity issue, our students will have “danced their way” through the Lights, Camera, Dance Show, performing dances which were inspired by classic and iconic movies.

One of our favorite Friday night community activities was to attend our annual So Show Me Talent Show where many of our students showcased their artistic, musical and performing talent giving us, as the audience, an overwhelming feeling of awe and inspiration!

This year’s Spring drama production of Blithe Spirit by Noel Coward, highlighted our student’s incredible acting talent as they told the story of a writer researching a new book on spiritualism who accidently gets himself into a ghostly love triangle with his wife and the ghost of his first wife. The farcical tale of ghosts and jealousy was a delightful time.

Student artists have proudly promoted and presented their work as part of our Imagine That Fine Arts Gallery allowing us the sheer pleasure of enjoying the beauty, talent and creativity of visual art work.

I hope you will take the time to read and enjoy these many newsworthy articles in this Trinity edition. We remain thrilled to continue our challenge of providing a learning environment that fosters the development of intellect, creativity and a passion for learning.

THE ARTS WERE ALIVE IN APRIL AT CARDINAL NEWMAN HIGH SCHOOL!

T

he celebration began on Thursday, April 4 with a performance in the gym during the school day for all students, faculty and staff. This Arts Rally included an excerpt from the upcoming Drama show, selections from the Spring Dance Show, and the School Band (Ensemble) performed many of the Pop/Rock songs they have been working on this semester which they performed again on Friday, April 12th, at the So Show Me talent show in the ACC. The Fine Arts classes were represented at the Arts Rally with painting,

drawing, and photography on display. The Fine Arts classes hosted a gallery reception “Imagine That”, which opened on Tuesday, April 9th. It was wellattended and really showed off the amazing artistic talent of our Cardinal Newman students. This gallery remained open in the ACC through Friday, April 12th.

The Spring Dance Show was held on April 15-16, 2019, at Sonoma Country Day School followed by the Spring Drama Show, May 1-2, 2019, held at the Raven Theater.

CN DANCE

C

ardinal Newman High School’s Dance Program has been very busy this semester! The Dance III Accelerated class performed for “WhyARTSMatter” in the Santa Rosa Downtown Courthouse Square, celebrating the arts in Sonoma County with Pulse Arts on Saturday, February 16, 2019.

On March 4, 2019, 17 dance students took a field trip to Luther Burbank Center for the Arts where they attended the Trinity Irish Dance Company Performance. Students watched an amazing show and took a master dance class taught by four of the performers. Thank you to the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts Educational Program for their generosity!

CN Student and Irish Dancer, Kaycee McKenzie, was invited to perform in the show!

The Dance Program produced the Fall Dance Show “Appetite for Change” in December. Director Gabrielle Thompson produced another amazing show highlighting contemporary dances inspiring change in a world of challenges.

FALL DRAMA PRODUCTION

ardinal Newman Dramatics Art presented two radio plays in November of 2018. The plays were Baby Snooks and The Ugly Duckling and The Murder Clinic presents A Scrap of Lace. The cast included

COLLEGE FAIR HOSTED BY THE CN ACADEMIC SUPPORT CENTER

I

n February, the Cardinal Newman Academic Support Center (ASC) hosted the first college information night designed for students who learn differently or who have learning disabilities. The night was dedicated to further educate the community

on post-high school options and resources. With approximately 100 community members in attendance, the evening served to inspire and alleviate fears of post-secondary education. Here are some of the comments:

It makes me happy to hear that learning different people can go to college and that there are colleges that cater to learning different students. Awesome! I basically forced my 25-year-old son to attend...there was enough inspiration in that room to light a fire under him and start the process of continued education. Thanks for a great night.”

MISTRESS AND MASTERS OF CEREMONIES: Mikayla McCormick, Cade Imm and James Parry

T

he English Department hosted this year’s TEDx Talk on February 6, 2019. Responding to the theme of “Responsible Relations,” speakers addressed relationships to themselves, others and the natural world. In compelling talks, Cardinal Newman seniors explored issues related to mental and physical health, the social relationships that shape our lives, and our obligation to respond to injustices around the globe. Student talks were the culmination of a semester-long study involving research, writing and reflection. Several of the speakers drew inspiration for their talks from their Community Based Service Learning Projects, where direct action deepened their understanding of gospel values. According to their mission statement, the organizers of TED “believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and, ultimately, the world.” Our Newman speakers spoke with insight and conviction, demonstrating their abilities to animate our school’s motto, “Cor ad Cor Loquitur, Heart Speaks to Heart.”

T

he annual Mother-Son event was held on Saturday, February 23, 2019, at Cardinal Newman’s Athletic Convocation Center. Moms and their sons had fun playing junk food BINGO together with lots of chances to win prizes. A delicious brunch was served and prepared by Rick Bruno of Bruno’s on Fourth. The Mother-Son Brunch was well-attended and fun was had by all!

M

other Daughter Brunch was held at Vintner’s Inn/ John Ash & Co. on Sunday, March 17, 2019. The young women of Cardinal Newman High School spent the morning with their moms, grandmothers, and/or aunts while enjoying conversation and brunch. A photo opportunity started the morning before President Laura Held opened with a prayer leading into a scrumptious brunch. This is always an enjoyable morning and one that leads to lasting memories.

FATHER DAUGHTER DINNER DANCE

T

he Father Daughter Dinner Dance is always a night to remember for dads and their daughters. This year’s event was held on Saturday, February 2, 2019, at John Ash/Vintner’s Inn. A beautiful dinner was served buffet-style before senior dads gave tribute to their daughters through songs and skits. The night came to an end as dads and their daughters danced the night away. It was a special night, indeed!

COMMUNITY BASED SERVICE LEARNING SPRING 2019

T

he class of 2019 has been working very hard at serving their community. The lessons of Christian service are many as the senior class has been fast at work completing the goals of their service project work all while preparing for Senior Boards. The service projects of our students include serving our Catholic Diocese at local churches and Catholic schools, Catholic Charities and more. In addition, we have many students working on various service projects at local schools, including serving those with special needs, the arts, STEM, music, health nutrition and physical education, supporting environmental issues, caring for the elderly, and caring for those afflicted with illness, to name a few. All of our service projects are rooted in the Teachings of Jesus through the Seven Themes of Catholic Social Teaching and Corporal Works of Mercy. As Cardinal Newman students begin their journey of high school, during freshman and sophomore years, students complete 25 hours of service in a multitude of areas. Each school year, the CBSL program hosts a service fair in September where 40 to 50 non-profit organizations host an information table and educate our students about different service opportunities available to serve. Students reflect on service experiences in Religion and English classes. Junior year, students

investigate potential service projects, learn more about the Catholic Social Teachings and propose service projects for senior year. In English class, junior students learn peer-reviewed research by studying about the social issues they are proposing to address through their service project goals. By senior year, students have set goals for their service project that are connected to both English and Religion curriculum. All service work and assignments are completed each month of senior year and come to culminate with a Senior Board presentation.

Thanks to the good works of students, teachers, and community mentors, the class of 2020 has proposed service projects for senior year. We look forward to being witness to the positive impact the efforts of our students will make in the community, answering the call of our Lord to love one another as we have been loved.

We are very much proud of our students and the good works they have shared with the world; student service work includes meeting needs locally, nationally, and globally. Let us forever remember the gospel message,

“There is one body, but it has many parts. But all its many parts make up one body. It is the same with Christ. We were all baptized by one Holy Spirit. And so we are formed into one body. M

r. Bobby Platt has been a benefactor for our CBSL Program for many years. Over the years he has helped with a multitude of the service projects by donating funds for project supplies and being present to support the overall needs of our program.

In a very special way and as a talented cartoonist, Bobby has created thousands of cartoon drawings over the years that our students offer to the children at their service project sites. These drawings have brought much joy to the lives of many children!

This year Bobby has designated a portion of his annual donation to be used by Bella Erwin and Jasmine Janisch for their individual service projects at Village Charter. Both students are working with groups of students at Village, teaching them life skills

that aid students in becoming empowered for success in school and beyond. Bella purchased a park bench the students constructed, painted and decorated with inspiring words and symbols. The garden bench has been dedicated in memory of Cardinal Newman graduate, Claire Daniels, class of 2017. Claire was a beautiful soul who also served the students of Village Charter. During Claire’s time at Village she created a support group known as “Girl Power.” Claire inspired many people in the short years she lived, she is dearly missed. Bella’s hope is the garden bench will serve as a nice reminder of Claire’s beautiful spirit. Below, is a photo of Claire with some of the girls she worked with during her senior year. JUNIOR RETREAT: IDENTITY JANUARY 27-28 & MARCH 24-25, 2019

T

he Junior Class Retreat served to strengthen the friendship and community of the Cardinal Newman Class of 2020. The students discussed and shared about who they truly are - inside and out.

On Sunday morning, members of the junior class arrived at CN (January) and their former satellite site, Our Lady of Guadalupe (March). Fr. Moses celebrated Mass with students and a parents.

Students met their retreat small groups and enjoyed lunch together before departing for CYO Camp in the beautiful redwood forest of Occidental. The groups took advantage of the nice weather and spent the afternoon hiking and getting to know new things about one another.

Sunday evening was spent with students sharing about their identities and experiences through games, projects and activities. The students enjoyed being able to relax, unwind and enjoy time together in play. Each small group, led by a volunteer faculty or staff member, served as a safe place for students to engage with each other in deep discussion. The evening culminated in a prayer remembering all those who have touched our lives.

Monday began with a nature morning prayer and time for the students to go out on their own to contemplate and pray in the beautiful natural surroundings.

Over the course of the rest of the day the students discussed who they are as a class and took time for relaxation. The retreat ended with an affirmation activity before the students headed home a refreshed and more closely- bonded class community.

SENIOR RETREAT: “IMMERSE” FEBRUARY 10-12, & APRIL 7-9, 2019

O

ur Senior Class Retreats took place at Alliance Redwoods Christian Conference Center in the beautiful redwood forest of Occidental. The theme of the retreat was “Immerse”, a call to the seniors to follow the example of Christ and fully-immerse themselves in the journey of life. The students were encouraged to reflect on the meaning and purpose of their lives and spend some time in self-discovery as well as community building. Volunteer teachers and faculty poured much time, attention, and care into the students leading small groups, giving witness talks to the large group and were wonderful, guiding presences to the seniors.

The students began their retreat on Sunday at their former satellite site, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, with Mass with the parish and concelebrated with Chaplain, Fr. Moses. Students met their small groups and enjoyed lunch together before departing for the retreat center.

The students arrived at the redwoods early enough to take advantage of the beautiful weather and hike with their small groups. That evening, following games and dinner, the students began to immerse themselves into the theme of the retreat as they took time to name the values and people that make up their foundations. An evening prayer in which each person shared a personal goal or expectation for the retreat set the tone and reinforced the theme of Immerse.

Monday brought time to spend outdoors in prayer and building trust with peers as they took turns guiding each other in blindfolded trust walk. Later that afternoon, students continued the bonding by asking and answering deep questions in pairs. The evening culminated in a Reconciliation Service, a campfire and a very special night prayer tradition.

Tuesday after lunch the students reflected on their future selves and their retreat experience. The groups particularly enjoyed affirming each other one by one and playing under the redwood canopy together.

Students returned to their day to day lives refreshed after spending some time in prayer, personal reflection, and community with classmates.

BLOOD DRIVES C WITH VITALANT AT CNHS

NHS hosted a blood drive on campus each semester of this academic year. Fr. Moses and Mrs. Lobbregt presented about the need for and effect of blood donation to all junior and senior Theology classes. Between the two drives, many CN students, faculty, staff, and parents signed up to donate blood resulting in over 35 units of lifesaving blood for our local community. Each unit of blood can save up to three lives. CNHS plans to host four blood drives next academic year and current junior student, Kaycee McKenzie, hopes to make blood donation the focus of her Community Based Service Learning Project.

ASSOCIATED STUDENT BODY (ASB)

A

SB started off 2019 with the goal to implement spirit days, rallies, and dances; they have succeeded! Our publicity committee in ASB has been stellar this year with some of the most beautiful signs around campus. One of our publicists will be completing a mural this spring on the gym wall. In addition, this spring we are going to have two dances. The first one was a Spring Fling in the middle of March and the second will be a CBSL fundraiser. The

rally in March consisted of a sing-off, watching Dance III perform, and a t-shirt designing contest for an end of the year shirt to distribute to the student body. Fun events this semester have included an Arts Alive! Kick-Off and Rally, the Spring Dance Show, PowderPuff Football, and a “Cloud 9”-themed Prom. Prom: Cloud 9 theme.

Lastly, ASB 2019-2020 has been selected and has started to shadow this year’s ASB and begin planning for next year.

WASHING OF THE FEET 2019

T

he Oxford Scholars dinner took place on Tuesday, January 22nd, and recognized the 100-year anniversary of the end of World War I. The topics concerned the impact of events of the conflict and Great Influenza, echoing from then, to throughout the century, until today. Our fourteen seniors wrote a paper, posted online, and defended their ideas in a post-dinner presentation.

ach year on Holy Thursday, all CN students, faculty and staff infiltrate the community performing service work in lieu of a regular school day. This year we focused on the service partnerships where seniors have been actively volunteering their time involving their service project efforts. Beginning last year, we invited students to sign up for service sites that interest them, and in some cases, sites where service projects may be developed.

Students were involved in beach clean-up; working at animal shelters benefitting dogs, cats and horses; putting packages together to send to our military; tutoring students at various schools; clean-up at multiple land preserves; clean-up locally after our long winter of rain; packing food for the hungry at local food banks and pantries; and much more. Cardinal Newman students, faculty and staff really made a difference in our community this Lenten season!

MEN’S VARSITY BASKETBALL T he Varsity Boys’ Basketball team logged another outstanding season. In early December, they won the Rose City Tournament, 71-52 over a highlyregarded Redwood of Larkspur squad. The team, later in December, began a 13-game win streak that included a 10-0 perfect record in the newly-formed North-Bay-Oak Division, and then defeated Santa Rosa and Montgomery to win the post-season tournament championship.

The league title was Newman’s 25th in 49 league seasons – a remarkable testimony to consistent excellence in the program. The Varsity was upset in the first found of Division II Sectional playoffs by Las Lomas of Walnut Creek 64-57; they finished 22-6 for the season. All five starters received various allleague honors: Nathan Capurro, Chauncey LeBerthon, Marcus Vidaurri, Trevor Smith, and Mason Friesch.

MEN’S JV BASKETBALL MEN’S FROSH CARDINAL BASKETBALL T he 2018-2019 Junior Varsity basketball team compiled a 24-2 record overall and finished atop the North Bay League standings with an undefeated 10-0 league record. After winning the highly-competitive John Rhodes Memorial Tournament at Acalanes HS, the CN JV squad won the consolation championship in both the Montgomery HS and Drake HS tournaments after suffering first round losses to Redwood HS and Salesian HS respectively. After the loss to Salesian, the team won 14 consecutive games to finish the season. Coach Vice and Coach Guillen would like to thank all the players for their unselfish attitudes, great work ethic, and competitive spirit throughout the season.

F

reshmen basketball started their season on a winning streak, winning the first four games, and after 10 games held a 7-3 record. The come-frombehind victory at Ukiah was a highlight as Coach Francis and the boys led the team to win 46-38. The next game was against Marin Catholic High School when Assistant Coach Francis and the boys won a cliffhanger 48-47. In the Sweet 16 Tournament, CNHS won two games and lost two, giving CN a record of 8-6 going into league play.

Over the duration of the season, the boys improved dramatically in all phases of the game and Coaches Francis and Ching knew this team would be competitive. The players played hard in every game, and there were five games where the score could have gone either way, but ended in favor of our opponent.

Coach Francis and Coach Ching are very proud of the boys (young men now), how hard they practiced, and how much fun they had as a team. The coaches made sure to remind the boys that the most important thing was to have fun playing and enjoy the game.

WOMEN’S VARSITY BASKETBALL T he 2018-2019 Cardinal Newman High School Varsity Girls Basketball hit the ground running with a 3rd place finish in their extremely competitive Cardinal Newman Classic Tournament which featured some of the top teams and players in the country.

The Cardinals opened up tournament play with a win over Encinal, followed by a tough loss to Sacred Heart Cathedral. They finished the tournament with a hard fought win over eventual Division 1 Northern California Champion Bishop O’Dowd. Senior Avery Cargill and Junior Anya Choice were named to the AllTournament Team.

The month of December was also highlighted by a Championship in the top division at the Eastside Collegiate Prep Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament. After defeating Clovis and Sacred Heart Prep in the first two rounds the Cardinals went on to defeat Arroyo Grande in the finals. Junior Anya Choice was named tournament MVP and Senior Avery Cargill was named to the All-Tournament Team.

This season also marked the first year of the reformatted North Bay League Oak and Redwood Divisions. For the 6th year in a row and with only one senior on the roster the Cardinals once again dominated Sonoma County winning the North Bay League Oak Division Championship and the North Bay League Oak Tournament Championship. During league they also participated in the Bishop O’Dowd and St. Mary’s Stockton MLK Showcases, two of the most prestigious showcases in the country. They had two big wins over eventual Division 1 Northern California Runner-Up Bear Creek (Stockton) and eventual Division 1 Southern California Runner-Up La Jolla Country Day (San Diego).

The Cardinals received the #2 seed in NCS Division 3 and were granted a first round bye. They defeated Kennedy of Richmond in the second round and went on to fall to eventual Open Division Participant St. Joseph’s Notre Dame (Alameda) in the semi-finals.

After sections the Cardinals were selected as the #3

seed in the Northern California Division 1 Tournament where they were defeated by a tough St. Francis of Mountainview team (ranked #3 in the CCS).

Avery Cargill, the Cardinal’s lone senior, will graduate as one of the most accomplished student- athletes in school history. Avery was the starting point guard and team captain on the team that won the 2016 Division 4 State Championship. She has also won a North Coast Section Championship and been a part of two North Coast Section Runner-Up teams in her four years at Cardinal Newman. She has won four consecutive North Bay League Championships, four consecutive North Bay League Tournament Championships and has a career 60-0 record against NBL opponents.

Avery has accepted a scholarship to continue her academic and athletic career at Hawaii-Pacific University. We’d like to thank Avery and her family for their commitment to Cardinal Newman, the girls’ basketball program and her teammates, and wish Avery the best of luck in college and beyond!

WOMEN’S JV BASKETBALL T he 2018-2019 JV Basketball season was a year of change for the girls since two new young coaches came into the picture, Christian McAlvain and Alexis Tappe, along with returning coach, Margaret Curzon.

Throughout the season, the coaches challenged the girls to learn a new offense to change looks at the basket, as well as movement. To put more on the girls’ plate, they worked on some zone defense since they struggled with injury or illness. They persevered to show the coaches that they were more than capable of handling the constant change.

The successful season ended with a record of 12-11.

The girls battled every game, working towards playing as a team, putting forth effort on every possession, and never giving up. The coaches challenged the girls to work hard to perfect the little things that would allow each of them to grow in basketball knowledge and confidence on and off the court. CNHS is very excited for what’s to come in the future of women’s basketball.

WOMEN’S FROSH BASKETBALL

C

oach Mullins had a great time coaching the Frosh Women’s Basketball team in their successful season. They started with 10 girls and eventually settled in with 8 as the games began. The girls battled through numerous injuries and illnesses, several times playing with only five or six players. Still, CN girls fought and battled and persevered. This amazing group of eight continued to improve as the season

went on. Their shining moment was after losing to Santa Rosa High School in two previous meetings, they came out victorious in their third attempt. A wonderful example of working hard towards a goal and achieving it! Coach Mullins is very proud of this team!\

MEN’S VARSITY SOCCER T he 2018-2019 Cardinal Newman varsity men’s soccer team had a successful year. Thank you to all players and parents for their support and dedication throughout the season. On the field, we had a solid season, finishing 3rd in our league and qualifying for an NCS Playoff berth. Off the field, we have such great students and families. Players are high character individuals, very successful with their academics and are positive teammates to each other. Our soccer team represents all the good you’d like to see in Cardinal Newman students. The coaches are extremely proud of the young men we are developing and that is a testament to our players, parents, and coaches. The memories and relationships will last a lifetime.

WOMEN’S VARSITY SOCCER C N Women’s Soccer Team completed the NBL league schedule and finished in second place with a record of 8-3-1 and an overall record of 11-4-1.

The team was seeded #1 in the Division IV North Coast Section playoffs based on their strength of schedule. On February 13, Cardinal Newman played Swett High School in the first round and won by a score of 7-0. On February 16, Cardinal Newman defeated the #9 seed University High School 4-0. On 2/20 in the semifinals, Cardinal Newman defeated #4 seed Piedmont High School by a score of 5-1 which set them up for a rematch with Marin Academy, a team they had beaten 1-0 in the first game of the season. Marin Academy was the #3 seed coming into the final. Cardinal Newman went on to defeat Marin Academy 3-2 at Santa Rosa High School to earn the Division IV North Coast Section Championship.

The Championship qualified the team for the Norcal Championships.

Based on Cardinal Newman’s Championship and their strength of schedule, Norcal pushed the school into Division II as the #8 seed in an eight team bracket. On 2/26, Cardinal Newman travelled to Whitney High School in Rocklin where they played the overall #1 seed. In overtime, Cardinal Newman defeated Whitney by a score of 2-1 on a goal by Keely Roy. In the semifinals of Norcal on 2/28, Cardinal Newman played St. Francis High School (the eventual champions) in Sacramento. Cardinal Newman lost by a score of 2-0 which ended the impressive run and their season.

Join us at Windsor Golf Club for the tournament on Thursday, June 6, 2019, now in its 29th year! The Alumni Association is dedicated to raising funds for the students of Cardinal Newman High School by hosting the Golf Tournament each year.

Registration begins at 12:00pm before a shotgun start at 1:00pm. Golfers will be taken on a ‘trip around the world’ on the green, where they will be greeted by

ALUMNI IN THE NEWS UCLA’S JERRY ROBINSON NAMED 2019 BRONKO NAGURSKI LEGENDS AWARD RECIPIENT

ollege Hall-of-Famer joins the growing list of honored college football legends. The Charlotte Touchdown Club in conjunction with the Football Writers Association of America proudly announced UCLA great Jerry Robinson as the recipient of the 2019 Bronko Nagurski Legends Award presented

by Rolle Oral & Facial Surgery, which recognizes outstanding defensive football players from the past 40 years. The award was presented formally during the annual Bronko Nagurski Trophy Awards Banquet on December 9, 2019. “. . . I was stunned and truly honored to receive this award because I know that Bronko Nagurski was one of the greatest football players ever and the annual award presented in his name goes to the best defensive player in college football,” said Jerry Robinson.

Jerry Robinson was a star athlete at Cardinal Newman High School. He captained the football, basketball and track teams. He ran the 100-yard dash in 9.5 seconds and high jumped 6 feet 5 inches. UCLA used him as a wide receiver his freshman year and moved him to inside linebacker just before the Rose Bowl game with Ohio State. As a linebacker, Robinson made AllAmerican three times. He was a Consensus choice in 1976, Unanimous in 1977 and 1978. Robinson set a school record for most tackles (28) in a single game against Air Force in 1976. His career total 468 tackles, set a UCLA record. The Downtown Athletic Club of New York named him Linebacker of the Year (Now named the Dick Butkus Award) in 1977 and 1978.) He received the Pop Warner Award as Best West Coast player in 1978. Robinson stood 6-3, weighed 208, and wore jersey No. 84, which UCLA retired. His name and number is displayed in the Ring of Honor at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Robinson was named to the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame, as well as the College Football

Hall of Fame. Jerry was also one of only 50 players to be named to The All-Century Pac 12 Team.

Robinson was selected in the first round of the 1979 NFL draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. He played a total of 13 years in the NFL, six with the Philadelphia Eagles and seven with the Los Angeles Raiders.

Robinson’s NFL awards and achievements include: NFC Defensive Rookie of the Year. Participant in Super Bowl XV (Philadelphia Eagles vs Oakland Raiders).

1987 Ed Block Courage Award. Four-time All-Pro Selection and participant in one Pro-Bowl.

Currently, Jerry Robinson is Vice President, Board of Directors for a nonprofit organization called Shoes4kidz and produces a podcast “People Doing Good” which highlights people doing good things in their neighborhoods.

he Alumni Association Committee meets quarterly to discuss ways of involving our alums of all ages, and ways to support the school through the Association. Many events are supported through this association including our Fun in the Fall and Polenta Feed, Golf Tournament, Alumni Socials, and Homecoming festivities.

Donna Marie (Rufino) Hardina passed away peacefully at home in Mesa, Arizona on December 27, 2018. Donna was an accomplished administrative professional, working in the Athletic Office at Cardinal Newman High School for 20 years before retiring in 2001.

Irene (Lourenzo Bugbee) Martin died peacefully in Santa Rosa surrounded by family on Sunday, May 6, 2019. She worked at Cardinal Newman High School for 16 years in the Advancement Office before retiring in 2000.

Elfi Bailey died peacefully with her family and friends at her side. She worked as a counselor at Ursuline High School for approximately 10 years before transitioning to Cardinal Newman at the closure of Ursuline in 2011. She worked with CN students until her retirement in 2017. She had a love for students and our community. The sparkle in her eye is something we will all remember her for.

he 2019-20 Enrollment Drive kicked off with “Calling All Cardinals”, our high school preview day event. There were over 200 students from 23 different middle schools in attendance. We had a good look at the future of enthusiastic young people who will attend Cardinal Newman during this period of rebuilding and change.

Open House followed in November, with more excitement about the class of 2023. Faculty and staff hosted students and parents for an informational experience for the first time since 2016. Epicurean Cafe prepared food for families researching CN, while our departments and college counselors provided a glimpse at the tremendous education and support awaiting them.

On Tuesday, May 14th, Cardinal Newman will host “Can’t Wait ‘til Next Year” where the Class of 2023 will be welcomed and will begin to experience the excitement of high school.

The journey to an extraordinary high school experience starts again next Fall as we look for candidates to join the Class of 2024.
