This was the first of seven built, the test car, the Mule as they say. Allan Moffat just had to have one and flew back to America to collect his for free from Bud Moore’s workshop, to bring it to Australia to be one of the most iconic muscle cars in Australian history. It was handbuilt, It was one of the “Magnificent seven “, and unbelievably at no cost. So with help from some great people he got it back to Australia, towed it to the workshop behind their Ford Econoline van, and painted it close to Ferrari red.
First race meeting it won all three races, Bob Jane came to just stare at it, Beechey sat on it, Geoghegan promptly ran into the door at the first corner. It was different colours, it was a sports sedan it was a dream come true. And I was there to see it when I was a kid with my big brother and family, so this is my tribute, and this is your new word for the day children, ldiosyncrasies. And that’s only part of the story.
And the biggest thing is to my wife Sue, without her this would not have happened.

Jess Bell - E30 Racing
I don’t remember a time before E30 Racing. The category started in 2001 when I was nine years old, and my dad was one of its three founders. While most kids spent weekends at the local footy, I grew up at race tracks, usually with a camera in my hand while Dad and my brothers raced. That eventually turned into learning to drive an E30 myself, winning a couple of club sprint championships, and, for the past 12 years, racing wheel-to-wheel in the category that has shaped so much of my life.
Today, I’m just as involved off the track as I am on it. I’ve spent more than a decade on the E30 Racing committee and am now in my fifth year as Category President. Away from the circuit, I also work as a commercial lawyer specialising in motorsport - something that probably wouldn’t have happened without the connections and opportunities E30 Racing created.
Jess Bell - E30 BMW
What keeps me coming back isn’t just the racing. Anyone who’s watched an E30 race knows how close the competition is, but it’s the people who make the category special. I’ve made lifelong friends here, watched families grow up together in the paddock, and experienced firsthand the support this community gives when things don’t go to plan. After rolling my first E30 at Sandown in 2021, the encouragement I received from fellow competitors was something I’ll never forget.
“Gonzales 2.0” was built to get me back on the grid and made its debut late in 2025. I’m excited to bring the car to this year’s Festival of Speed, where I’ll also be joined by my dad and both brothers. Remarkably, it will be only the third time all four Bells have raced at the same event, so keep an eye out for us! If testing is anything to go by, the time off track hasn’t slowed them down at all.

Greg Lovett - Porsche 993 GT2
The creation of new FIA GT racing categories in the early 1990s encouraged manufacturers to enter models similar to those seen on the road. Porsche responded with a range of increasingly stout variants based on its thencurrent 964-generation 911. Cont. page 25 ..
David Towe - BMW M3
The last M3 built by Frank Gardner’s JPS Team BMW in 1987, the log book was issued on 10/9/87. First race James Hardie 1000 1987 with Richards and Longhurst taking 4th outright and first in class. In 1988 Brock drove the car under Mobil sponsorship during the ATCC as #05 and shared the car with Richards to win the Pepsi 250 at Oran Park. At the Enzed 500 at Sandown as #05
Brock again teamed up with Richards, after such a successful previous race it was a disappointing race at Sandown when running 5th outright, a split oil filter cost the car a finish.
The car carried the live telemetry system from NetComm Communications which was ground breaking technology in 1988.

By the time the 993 was launched in 1994, however, customers were demanding more power than the existing 3.8-liter naturally aspirated engine could provide.
Named for the class in which it was built to contest, Porsche’s answer was the 993 GT2. Based on 993 Turbo underpinnings, the GT2 differed visually via bolt-on fender flares, large rear wing, and aerodynamic panels with air intakes for additional brake cooling.
Inside, the racer featured a gutted interior including only the absolute necessities for competition. Fitted with mandated restrictor plates, the turbocharged M64/81 3.6-liter flat six developed a reported 450 hp and 400 lbs./ft. of torque, a number thought conservative. Power was managed by a six-speed manual gearbox
and sent to the rear wheels as mandated by the regulations. As with its predecessors, the GT2 excelled in endurance racing, quickly becoming the privateer’s car of choice.
Launched at the 1994 Essen Motor Show, the GT2 was constructed by Roland Kussmaul’s Race- Sports Department at Porsche. This 993 GT2 was ordered by Alfonso de Orleans (Spanish Duke of Galliera) for his racing team, Repsol Kremer.
This GT2 retains its original engine – a rarity for a race car of its age. Presenting in its Repsol livery as raced by Alfonso de Orleans.

Doug Barbour - Porsche Carrera
Doug Barbour will be competing again this year in his Group Sc 1976 3lt Porsche 911 Carrera with the racing number 911. Doug started racing in Group S over 10 years ago, after running for many years in rally events.
Doug has always had an interest in classic cars, purchasing and restoring his first classic (a MGA 1600 Mk2) in 1978. He currently has a 1959 MGA 1600, 1968 MGB, and 3 early 911’s in his collection. After being involved in different car
club’s super sprints and regularity he thought Historic racing was the way to go and decided to join Group S Racing, as Classic Sports Racing in production cars from the 50’s 60’s and 70’s with limited modifications appealed to him. With that in mind he purchased his current Porsche and set about turning it into a race car for Group S which meant he had to keep it period correct and not increase cubic capacity, or upgrade brakes and many other items. Michael and his team from Newton Automotive in Sydney set the car up for racing increased the horsepower and changed gearbox ratio’s to make it a front running car in Group Sc.Doug has won several events over the years and enjoys all things about Group S, especially his fellow competitors, who have all been supportive and helpful throughout his time in Group S. He says it is a great group and would recommend it to anyone wishing to enter historic car racing. He is very thankful to several of his fellow competitors who have been wonderful mentors to him as he has
tried to improve his racecraft. He is currently on the committee of Group S.
Fortunately his partner, Xanthea, shares his passion for motor sport and is a Motor Sport Australia Photographer, and comes to all his race meetings with camera in hand and captures not just him on the track but all the Group S competitors.
For several years Doug also ran his 911 in Production Sports Car racing with great success in his class and really enjoyed the longer race format.
As well as circuit racing, Doug and Xanthea compete in dirt rallies in their early air cooled Safari Porsche 911.

Chris Young - Commodore Group C replica
Originally log booked as a Group 3C rally car, the previous owner had begun some of the fabrication and body work to convert the 1981 Commodore to a Group C replica when I bought it.
I finished the build over many years, doing the majority of work myself, including paint and electrical and is now log booked as Group 3D Sports Sedan.
As an owner of a HDT road car, I have a strong passion for the marque and a particular love for the 1983 05 Bathurst livery. Reinforcing my desire to replicate that car was the fact that most tributes are of the #25 car, as it was the dual Bathurst winner. I have tried to replicate the 05 car as best as possible (within reason).
The engine is now a dry sumped 355 stroker, running a steel crank, 4 bolt mains, 6” rods, SRP pistons and heads off Larry Perkins engine #10. Externally I have maintained the original twin 48 IDF down draft Weber’s, race tray and harrop pulleys. The car also runs period-correct Harrop strut tops, reverse sweep mechanical drive tacho, interior trim, hand sign writing by the original HDT signwriter, dummy fuel tank covers and dry break fuel fillers.
The car successfully debuted in 2025 at All Historic Mallala and runs in the Touring car Tribute category. True to the original car at Bathurst, I completed about 7 laps of the Winton Historics in 2025 before succumbing to engine problems. I’m really looking forward to this year’s event and hopefully 2026 will be a better year! Pic courtesy Ian Smith

Tim Freeman BMW E30
Tim Freeman commenced racing in the E30’s in 2016, stepping into one of the most closely matched one-make grids in Australian motorsport. He made an immediate impression in his first full season the following year in 2017, finishing runner-up in the ‘BMW Drivers Cup’ — the category’s principal individual drivers’ championship, as well as taking out the inaugural Rookie Championship, an award introduced to recognise the standout newcomer in the field.
Since then, Freeman has remained a continuous fixture in the series, racing year after year against a tight pack where the gap between the fastest and slowest cars is often measured in fractions of a second. In 2019, Freeman’s campaign was interrupted by a
heavy accident at The Bend Motorsport Park in South Australia - one of the category’s interstate destinations. The crash damaged his E30 so severely that the car required a complete re-shell, with the entire race build transferred onto a fresh bodyshell.
That rebuild became a long-term project carried out through the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the resulting car which you see today at the 2026 Festival of Speed finally made its competitive debut in 2024. This weekend marks Freeman’s return to the BMW Driver’s Cup in 2026 after a 12 month hiatus from racing for what promises to be one of the largest E30 grids in well over a decade to mark the 25th anniversary of the category.

This is one of 4 A9X Torana hatchbacks that Allan Grice Racing used from late 1977 to start of 1980. This car started as the car built for Grice in 1977 when A9X Torana was homologated to run that year and was campaigned by Allans team in the long distance race series at Sandown 400, Bathurst 1000, Adelaide 400, Surface paradise 400 and Phillip Island 400. It was also entered in the Baskerville Winfield challenge in 1977 at the very end of that year. In 1978 the car was used in the touring car championship and then used as the spare car for the long distance races later that year.
In 1979 this car was used in the touring car championship and rotated with the car built in 1978 to share the racing load. In the last couple of rounds of the 1979 touring car championship Allan badly damaged both cars and they were both not able to be repaired in time for the long distance races. The team bought two other privateer racecars to replace the damage cars this one was the old Bonds Gotcha A9X Torana Hatchback. This car was repainted in Craven Mild colours and all the Allen Grice racing go fast bits were fitted and the car competed in the Sandown 400 and was in first place until a valve in the engine broke in the closing stages of that race which allowed Peter Brock to win the event.
This car then went onto race at Amaroo park two weeks before Bathurst and was used as the spare car #16 for Bathurst 1979. This car
did qualify in the top 10 at Bathurst 1979 but as Craven Mild was only ever going to run one car in the race they put all there efforts into the other car # 6 for the top 10 shout out on the Saturday before the race and the 1000 km race on Sunday. After the Bathurst race the car was sold as a road car and ran around the streets of Sydney for a few years and was then sold to a sports sedan racer in Canberra. He played with it for a little while and then sold it as a road car again and was driving around the streets of ACT for a short time.
I bought the car back in 2004 and brought the car back to its 1979 Bathurst spec and have been racing it in as many historic races as I can get to and afford to.
I (Tony Sawford) have always had a huge interest in Australian touring car racing from the early 1970’s especially HOLDEN and BROCK. I started my first real job at Graeme Blanchard Holden Dandenong in 1982 as an apprentice mechanic and finished there as workshop foreman. I then went on to Noel Gould/Baycity Holden in Frankston late in 1989 and worked up as high as Assistant service Manager. In 2002 I started at National Power steering which was bought out by Active power steering in 2014 and have been Victorian state manager at Active power steering for the last 5 years. I always wanted to race cars from a very young age but I could never afford to do so because general life commitments would get in the way.

Purchased the 1972 Triumph TR6 in NSW from Glen Cortinho in 2025. Glenn and his wife had matching TR6’s and had raced them competitively for a number of years.
Previous to the TR6 I raced a 1967MG fitted with a Mazda MX5 motor and gearbox in regularity only. Since purchasing the TR6 I have joined Group S and have competed at Winton, Phillip Island, One raceway and Sydney motorsports park.
I am a part of Team Repair & Restoration Racing a business owned by my brother in law Garth Selig who races a Dart and prepares many race cars in group S and MG racing and a business that specialises in Rolls Royce and Bentley restorations and repairs.

Returning to E30 Racing - A Full-Circle Moment
By Graeme Bell: Coming back to E30 Racing feels a bit like coming home.
In 2001, together with two great mates, I helped found the E30 Racing Club and the Series. None of us knew then just how big it would become or how many lives it would touch, but we believed in the cars, the racing, and the community we could build. Over the years I was lucky enough to win many races, take a championship, and help shape the category into something I’m incredibly proud of.
At Bell Motorsport, we worked hard and we worked together. For many years we have had more than half the field running under our banner, which earned us the Constructors Cup and cemented our place in the heart of the category. But more important than trophies were the people: the new racers we brought in, the friendships formed, and the family we built around these little E30s. Eventually, I stepped back from my own racing to focus on mentoring and supporting my kids, Sean, Chris, and Jess as they carved out their own paths. Watching them grow into talented, respected drivers has been one of the greatest joys of my life. Sean has taken three championships, Chris has taken one, in the same car I won my Championship, and Jess has shown grit, determination, and heart every time she’s stepped onto the track. At Bell Motorsport, we’ve continued to bring new drivers into the category, and Chris and I have taken pride in guiding them, supporting them, and helping them find their feet in the sport.
Our family involvement in the category has grown even further over the years. Sean’s partner Jenna, even raced with E30s until they welcomed their daughter, Olivia and little Olivia absolutely loves coming to the racetrack. She’s already part of the Bell Motorsport family, joining us in the paddock with that same spark in her eyes that her dad had at her age.
Chris’s partner, Katie, is also a regular at the track. She jumps in, helps out, and joins in the fun like she’s been part of this world forever. And now, with only a week to go until she delivers our new baby granddaughter, the excitement in our family
is bigger than ever. Knowing that another little one will grow up around this community fills my heart. Then life threw me a curveball two different cancers in two years. It stopped me in my tracks, literally and figuratively. Racing had to wait. Everything had to wait. My focus shifted to getting well, staying strong, and being there for my family and my club. And now, after a long fight and a lot of support, I’ve been medically cleared to get back on track again.
I can’t put into words what that means to me. Only once before back in 2015 at Phillip Island, have I raced alongside all three of my kids in the same event. To have the chance to do that again now, after everything, is something I will treasure. We’ve done enduros together as a family, but never a full standalone race meeting like this. To be back in the car, back in the series I helped build, and back on track with my kids beside me… it’s a dream I wasn’t sure I’d get again.
I’m proud of the series. I’m proud of the community we’ve built. I’m proud of the racers we’ve helped bring through. But more than anything, I’m proud of my family the way they’ve supported me, the way they’ve grown, and the way they’ve stood by me through the toughest years of my life.
And I have to mention my wife, Jo. She’s been my rock through all of this. She comes to the track, helps out, supports the team, supports the club, and supports me in ways most people never see. She’s the quiet strength behind everything I do and having her there as I return to racing means more than I can ever properly express. So here I am back in the driver’s seat, back in the same old car that has caried me for 25 years and won several championships, back in series I love, back with my kids, and back doing what makes me feel alive. It’s not just a return to racing. It’s a return to myself. And I can’t wait to see what comes next.

1973 Bathurst Winning Moffat Replica-Tribute
After building and running a replica of Alan Moffats beautiful Boss 1969 Mustang for the last 25 years in Tarmac rallies and many six hour events at Philip Island I decided I needed a good old aussie Falcon coupe. What better vehicle to build than a replica of Moffats Bathurst winning car, when It does not actually exist anymore. As many would know the original car was written off at Philip Island in a turn 1 rollover.
I swapped a 67 Mustang coupe for the Falcon and then spent several years putting it together after the usual rust repairs. I had a 351 Cleveland out of a hot Falcon ute so put that in with a spare Tremec 6 speed gearbox. I have only run it at the Sandown with the original diff ratio of 3.0 and it went quite well. Now I am running a 3.7 ratio with a full floater so it should go OK at Winton. It is really a great road car in disguise as a racer.

I met my wife end of 2000 and she was also interested in racing cars. We started club racing about 2002 in Heritage touring cars and apart from some enforced holidays (car damage) I have been doing as many races as I can afford.
Phillip Island would have to be the best track in
Australia to race at (in my opinion) bar Bathurst and my best result was at Bathurst I came 1st out of all entry’s group C and A in the last race of the weekend at the 2011 Bathurst 12 hour support race.

The E30 is a proper piece of motorsport history. It’s the car that made BMW’s name in the 1980s and turned the 3 Series into a track legend. He runs as part of the BMW Drivers Cup, where a whole grid of them line up together, all the same era, all fighting for the same corner.
This is grassroots racing in its purest form. A family team, a trailer, and the job of going faster than the car next to you. Matt Thewlis from Race Driver Coach rides shotgun on the headset, calling it lap by lap.
It’s working too - Shannon finished 4th in the 2025 championship and in 2026, the Cup’s 25th anniversary season, he’s hunting the podium.
There’s also his day job. Shannon runs his own leadership consultancy, with 25 years of leading under pressure. It’s good training too- because racing is just pressure with a roll cage.
The approach doesn’t change from the track to the boardroom. Stay calm. Trust the team. Get better every lap.

I started racing in 1989 in the 6 cylinder HQ series which I ran for about 16 seasons, I won the HQ vic championship in 1996. I also built a EH for group n historics in 1995 and still race that today. This HQ Nc car was built around 2006 and competed in the original TCM series for the first 2 seasons then went back into the historic Nc category. It runs a 430hp 308 4 speed gearbox, handles quite well which makes it a very fun car to drive. We’re still developing suspension set up and its getting quicker each time it hits the track.

David Noakes returns to Winton in his #27 MK1 Ford Escort RS1600, BDA-powered, competing in Group N / Historic Touring Cars.
Racing since his late teens, David began in the HQ Series in the early 1990s and has built a strong record in historic competition, including back-to-back Club Championships in 2023 and 2024. He has campaigned the Escort since 2012, continuing a proud family connection with the car, originally raced by his father.
A passionate contributor to the sport, David has served as President of the Historic Touring Cars Association NSW for several years, alongside his ongoing involvement behind the wheel. While
Bathurst remains his favourite circuit, Winton presents another opportunity to showcase the pace and character of the iconic BDA Escort. Motorsport runs deep in the Noakes family. His father, David Noakes Snr (83), raced competitively until the age of 76 and remains a constant presence trackside. The next generation is also making its mark, with grandsons Jackson (RX8 Cup Series) and Dylan (Hyundai Excel) continuing the legacy.
Prepared with care and steeped in history, the RS1600 is more than just a race car - it’s a true three-generation family story, brought to life on track with the unmistakable sound of the BDA.

Matt Magraith - Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV
Behind the wheel of car #5 is Matt Magraith, a passionate Alfa Romeo racer and long-time competitor in historic motorsport.
This is Matt’s second Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV. His original car, the well-known navy blue #477, was developed and campaigned over a 16-year period, progressing from Veloce All Alfa Racing into the fiercely competitive Group S Historic category. During that time, the car earned a reputation as a front-running Alfa and delivered
countless memorable battles, highlighted by an SBB lap record at Phillip Island in 2023.
Then came the moment every racing driver dreads. In 2024, at Turn 1 of Sydney Motorsport Park, #477 was involved in a significant accident that brought its racing life to an abrupt end. Thankfully Matt walked away unhurt, but the damage to the car was beyond repair and the much-loved Alfa was ultimately retired.
For many competitors that might have been the end of the story. For Matt, it was simply the start of the next chapter.
A replacement 1968 Series 1 1750 GTV shell was sourced from Victoria and an intensive 12-month rebuild commenced. Every lesson learned from the original car was carried forward, with the proven mechanical package transplanted into the new shell and the car prepared for a return to historic racing.
The rebuilt Alfa made its competition debut at Phillip Island earlier this year, with the paint barely dry before it rolled onto the circuit. Still in the early stages of its development, this weekend marks just the car’s third race meeting as Matt and the team continue to refine the package and build confidence in
industries
the new machine.
One thing, however, remains unchangedMatt’s enthusiasm for Alfa Romeo racing and his determination to keep the 1705 toward the front of the field.
Matt’s racing program is proudly supported by Manning Motors, Brookvale.

MG Racing #33
John Makeham – MG Racing Captain
Now considered an MG Racing stalwart – John’s beginning in Motorsport was via growing up around the MG car club in the late ’60s, with early memories of Templestowe, Calder, Sandown and all things Motorsport.
John’s late Father Bill owning a Harry Firth built TC ‘Boy Racer’ which was the must use car for all things MG car club, so it was a natural progression to begin competition with the Club was in a modified 1966 MGB.
In 2001 a tired old race car with a long history was purchased from MG Workshops and given a Birthday to begin a new race life in the hands of John, with a colour change from white to the now familiar Bennett Signs sponsored Red with white Chequers.
Having had various levels of success in the early years. 2003 saw a rather large off at Phillip Island with the Midget undergoing a major rebuild again in the Red & white, but this time with major component upgrades, making it stronger and safer than its predecessor. Competing within the Victorian club racing, the mid field running car was a regular through the 2000’s culminating with a fantastic visit to Bathurst in 2008. Soon after a major engine failure led to the car being put in mothballs for the next decade.
With yet another Major birthday beginning in 2020 and a return to racing in late ’22. Fast forward to 2026, the little Red Midget and it’s not so little driver are Back at the Wonderful Winton FOS for another year.

This was a log booked rally car and I purchased it as a rolling shell and we built it from the ground up, the car is now log booked as a 3D sports sedan.
I have always been interested in any form of motorsport and was always keen to get on the “other side of the fence” and participate, after a conversation with Rod Hadfield I decided to look for a suitable car and found the VN and am now having a ball racing around tracks like Winton, Mallala, Sandown and Phillip Island.
Car is great fun to drive, and the Tribute category is getting stronger all the time with a great variety of cars, it’s very popular with the fans and the cameradie between us all is fantastic.
This will be my fourth Festival of Speed and it’s a great event and very well run, I mark it on the calendar every year now.
