Welcome to the 33rd VHRR Phillip Island Classic “Festival of Motorsport” this weekend, the 10, 11, 12 & 13 March 2022.
At this years event we celebrate a very important milestone in Historic Motor Sport in Australia being the 50th Anniversary of VHRR. This is a significant achievement and one which we are all very proud of.
VHRR remains #1 in Historic Motor Sport.
At this 2022 event our Clerk of Course will again be Michael Herlihy, who is very experienced and capable in the role, and I extend thanks to both Michael, his Deputy and to all our Classic Race team who will manage the “on track” activities over the weekend. I also express sincere thanks to the hard working VHRR Phillip Island Race Committee, and the VHRR event Management Team all of whom have worked tirelessly to ensure the smooth running of this event.
We are of course delighted to welcome back our Spectators and thank them all for the support that they have shown us over many years.
Thanks also to all of the volunteer Officials, Scrutineer’s, Flaggie’s, Fire & Rescue Team, Recovery Team, Medical Crew, Grid, Pit & Gate & Paddock Officials without whom this event would not take place.
We will have cars from Grp J K & L, M&O, Grp C & A, Grp N, Grp S, Formula Ford, Form Vee, early and late model open wheelers and big banger sports cars plus
also a few F5000. We will have some early 5 Ltr SuperCars, as well as Regularity cars.
We will not have any cars from overseas in 2022, so it will be an all Australian affair. Thank you to our “local” Victorian competitors, many of you are regular entrants and have been coming to the Island since this events inception. It will also be great to welcome entrants from all over Australia, WA, SA, TAS, NSW & QLD. Without all of you supporting us we simply do not have an event.
Our thanks to the Phillip Island Circuit Management and Staff for their continuing support of this event and for the magnificent presentation of the venue. Finally our thanks to the continued support of our Sponsors large and small, and particularly SHANNONS, PENRITE, COOLDRIVE & BURSON
I wish everyone an enjoyable and safe weekend of great Historic Motor Racing.
Chairman VHRR Phillip Island Race Committee and VHRR President 2022

It’s common for car discussions between petrol heads to quickly turn to the numbers: how much horsepower? How many rear wheel kilowatts? How fast down the strip?
While it’s one thing to go fast, for safety’s sake, it’s just as important to have adequate stopping power, both on the track and on the road.
As a global leader in the automotive aftermarket sector with more than 70 years’ experience, Bendix is in the process of launching a range of braking packages designed for modern classics and muscle cars, beginning with the current model Ford Mustang.
The new Bendix Ultimate+ range, includes an upgrade package featuring a set of its Ultimate front rotors, Ultimate+ brake pads, replacement braided brake hoses, brake rotor cleaning wipes and a can of its Cleanup brake disc cleaner.
Especially designed for use with the Mustang’s Brembo front calipers, the Ultimate front rotors meet Ford’s original specifications for size, diameter and stud pattern spacing, ensuring the rotors are an easy fit while providing long-term reliability and performance.
Drawing on Bendix’s extensive experience as Australia’s largest manufacturer of friction material products and braking expertise, the range includes high carbon metallurgy steel for better thermal stability and a consistent pedal feel in both track and everyday applications.
Additionally, the Ultimate rotors make use of diamond tip slots and v-shaped dimples to effectively dissipate heat, while repelling dirt and water.
Further complementing the Ultimate+ package is Bendix’s braided brake hoses, which feature a Teflon-coated core line, which is wrapped in a stainless-steel braid and then coated in a protective outer sleeve.
The major benefit of braided brake lines is that the steel sheath prevents the line from expanding under extreme pressure, delivering a more consistent brake feel, while also better protecting the lines from damage.
While initially available for the Ford Mustang, Bendix’s Ultimate+ Performance Brake Upgrade Kits will be released for additional makes and models later in the first quarter on 2022, these will include packages for to suit selected Holden Commodores, Subaru WRX and BRZ as well as its Toyota 86 stablemate

The Lotus 101 was Team Lotus's entry for the 1989 Formula One season. Gérard Ducarouge's departure during 1988 had necessitated the former Williams aerodynamicist Frank Dernie to be appointed as Technical Director in November 1988. Despite his appointment the majority of the work for the 101 had been conducted by chief designer Mike Coughlan. The 101 was to be a rushed design built within weeks and to a series of constraints.
Ducarouge's departure coincided with end of the 1,500 cc turbocharged era. Lotus, along with other competitors, now had to incorporate 3,500 cc normally aspirated engines into their cars. Judd were therefore enlisted to supply their CV 32 valve V8 engine, but as Lotus were only a "customer" (Judd's principal contracts were the supply of their latest EV V8 engines to the Brabham and March teams) solutions were sought to make up the power deficiency by appointing Tickford to research and develop a version of the Judd engine with a five-valve-per-cylinder head. The use of the Judd engine did permit Dernie and Coughlan to design a
smaller and lighter car than before; indeed the narrowness of the cockpit required Momo to build a special steering wheel to allow the drivers to fit their hands between the wheel and bodywork of the car.
The initial optimism and favourable reception by management and driver alike shortly evaporated, as the 101 proved to be a disaster. Not only were the customer Judd engines rated at around 610 bhp (455 kW) (about 80 bhp (60 kW) less than the dominant Honda V10 engine used by McLaren), but it was apparent that the Goodyear tyres that the team were using had been designed principally for use by the McLaren and Ferrari teams, who, in addition to having heavier and more powerful engines (which allowed the tyres to heat up faster) were able to test and tune their chassis to work better with the compounds.
The 101 failed to collect significant results as the season progressed, culminating in the events following the British Grand Prix where Nelson Piquet had driven to a fighting fourth-placed finish. The Chapman family, who were still the shareholders in
Team Lotus International, persuaded Peter Warr and Chairman Fred Bushell (who was about to face charges arising from the DeLorean affair) to leave. Tony Rudd, who was at the time working for Group Lotus, was appointed executive chairman. Also the Tickford head was abandoned.
The renewed optimism briefly helped to improve results; however, at Spa both Lotuses failed to qualify for a Grand Prix for the first time since 1958. The season ended with two fourth-place finishes for Nelson Piquet and Satoru Nakajima in Japan and Australia respectively.
Nakajima also snatched the fastest lap in the torrential rain of Adelaide.
Given the dreadful start to the season (Lotus only scored points in one of the first seven races), the total points tally of 15 points was almost a positive Lotus could take out of the 1989 season. Indeed, it would prove to be the highest number of points Lotus were to score in a season during the normally aspirated engine era until the team's collapse at the end of the 1994 season. Wikipedia

Looking forward to this event. I have competed in motorsport for some 40 years initially club rallying and raced with the HTCAV now for nearly 10 years but never had the chance due to schedules and family issues to run at this event.
It's one of only a few running in Australia but so very popular in Europe. It does not have the cubes of a Mk2 but I will be giving it a go with all the Cortinia's scheduled to enter.
I have changed the colour of the car during the Covid 19 lock up so this will be it first outing in green/silver (yea I know original for a Jag ha ha).
Originally engineered for aerospace and aviation applications, new 303® Automotive Protectant provides superior UV protection for any rubber, vinyl, and plastic surfaces of your vehicle, such as your dashboard, windshield wiper blades, and even your tires.
Unlike many protectants that leave greasy residues, 303® Automotive Protectant dries to a clear matte finish without that sticky, shiny slick feeling.
This is the 3rd car built by Jack Pryor and Clive Adams and was apparently modelled of the Stan Coffey Cooper Bristol that Clive had driven on occasion. It as completely restored for me by Paul Trevethan in Melbourne and debuted at Winton in 2007 and has been running at the pointy end of Group Lb fields ever since. This Prad runs a fully worked 6 cylinder grey Holden motor fitted with a very rare Phil Irving Repco High Power cross flow head, which is mated to a 4speed Borgward transaxle. The Mighty Roadmaster, built in 1934, made its first appearance for a while at the 2021 Austin 7 Club's annual Historic Winton. It was driven by Repco employee and VHRR member Abby Wingett and I’ve included below her description of the car and a little of its history. As you’ll see most of the components date back over 100 years though it was constructed and first used in 1934.
Abby’s description of the Roadmaster follows ~ “The Mighty Roadmaster - 1909 Model T Ford chassis that has been cut down. It runs a 1923
Alvis engine, with direct drive and no gearbox, the body is all hand built and is running a Rolls Royce windscreen. Was made in 1934 from the spare parts listed above, 4 cylinders. Engine capacity is 1496cc.
Cameron MacMillan and Rob Rowe were given the Roadmaster midget speedcar in 1976 by a beaut bloke named Tony Toohey, from Joadja in the southern highlands.
The Roadmaster is the oldest midget speedcar in Australia and was built for Bill Allen, the man that introduced midget speedcar racing to the southern hemisphere.
The first Midget speedcar season started at Olympic Park in Melbourne on 15th December 1934: Bill Allen and the Roadmaster were there.”
What an interesting car, and how fabulous it was to see it again at Winton! And consider this; the first time 20 year old Abby had seen the car, let along sat in it was at Winton, a track she had driven around only briefly in a Mini. What Abby failed to mention in her description was that apart from having only one gear it has only rear brakes actuated by an external lever. The clutch also by an external lever, and the only “pedal” is the accelerator. And , though not entirely exceptional in early historic cars, the fuel has to be pumped to get pressure via a hand pump on the left. Also for easy access the steering wheel is removable! (As per current F1!).
Yet Abby not only managed all of this in practice and in the 3 regularity events but passed a few of the slower cars in the process!
What an amazing example to set and an inspiration for the VHRR and other state historic racing clubs to encourage more young competitors into the sport.
Abby’s uncle, Jason Wingett, races the Repco Holden JR1 and is a member of the HSRCA. Nigel Tait

Simon has been racing Group S since Mid-2014 where he started in Greg Prunster's Mustard coloured Mk 3 Sprite affectionately known as Tigger due to it's Black and mustard/ orange colouring. The car was then developed over the following 5 years until it got to the point where it was giving a lot of the higher horsepower cars a run for their money. In 2019 the car was purchased from Greg Prunster and then reborn into the Silver car you see today which still keeps the Black and orange stipes as homage to its history and is now affectionally known as Tigger 2.0! Tigger 2.0 is now a much more nimble car with Bob Rowntree preparing her to perfection, extracting more speed with some more fine tuning of the suspension and engine. Simon is now claiming a few lap records that his brother (Damien Meyer) once held.
Simon was crowned the 2020/2021 (spread over 2 years as both years
were Covid affected) winner of the Group S Presidents Cup which combines scores from all Group S categories and awards the prize to the overall Group S winner. This title also gives Simon the honour of running number 1 for the 2022 season. Simon also won the BMC challenge – Russel/Rowntree Trophy in 2019 at Eastern Creek.
In the 2020/2021 racing season Simon also walked away with the Win in Group Sba – Catalina Cup & Goldfields Cup.
Simon started racing Group S a number of years after his brother Damien Meyer (Car 13) and the 2 regularly annoy the faster HP cars, preferring the tighter twisty tracks but still giving them a run for their money at Horse Power tracks like Phillip Island. Both Simon and Damien both grew up racing Karts and both have multiple State and National championships under their belts.

I purchased the car towards the end of last year 2021, from John Luxmoore who exercised it regularly from 2008 to 2021 in the Historic’s.
The classic will be the first time I’ve raced this car so I’m really looking forward to giving it a run. Originally built by historic racer/car builder Paul Trevethan for Ian Robertson around 1994. The car started it’s racing life in 1997, Ian Robertson was the first log booked owner/ racer in 1997 to 2007. John Luxmoore was the second log booked owner/racer from 2007 to 2021 ¢ Mike Gosbell - Sabakat
Featuring a 1.5 Litre Coventry Climax Twin Cam Engine, this detail accurate recreation of the Famous “Sabakat” (Lotus 12) racing car with CAMS Certificate of Description and Log Book..
Originally imported by Ern Tadgell in pieces the “Sabakat” raced in numerous events throughout Australia from 1957 to 1960 including the 1959 and 1960 Australian Grand Prix. The car was all but destroyed in a fiery accident at the 1960 Australia Grand Prix in Lowood Queensland.
This recreation was constructed between 1971 and 1979 after the 1960 Grand Prix accident and represents the car as it was in 1957. This car is ready to be enjoyed and comes with a current CAMS CoD and Historic Group Lb log book.
¢ Bill Cutler
Built at the Nurburgring in 1981 by the local BMW agent Willie Martini, the car raced in many 24 hour and 1000 km endurance races at the ‘Ring. After changing hands in 2002 it continued racing at many European circuits. Built to European Group 2 regulations, which were the basis for Australian Group C touring cars, it runs a Weber carburetted 3.5 litre 6 cylinder engine, Getrag “dog leg” gearbox, 10.5” front tyres and 12” rears. Bill has raced it since 2015 in UK and European series at iconic circuits such as Spa, Monza, Nurburgring, Dijon-Prenois, Silverstone, Brands Hatch, Donington. It’s a complete contrast to his ex-works Group A BMW M3, but no less rewarding to drive. Covid restrictions resulted in Bill shipping the 535 to Australia, to spend a year or two competing the Group C/A races here.

1981 Spectre - Formula Vee celebrates 55 years in Australia in 2020. It is still the most affordable exciting racing, in my opinion. I race at all eastern state events, usually at the back of grid (BOG Racing) and there is always close competition. In period there were big fields of Vee's at the tracks so there must be many cars out there that will provide affordable fun motor sport for those interested. This is the best kept historic racing secret, so please don't tell anyone!
My car is a 1981 Spectre and this year will be its first run at Phillip Island. The Victorian Vee racers have encouraged me to enter and I am sure I wont be disappointed!

Garrie Cooper made only 3 Elfin 792s, this one is #2 chassis originally for Peter Scott then Craig Sparks. 33 race meetings 79 -88, only surviving tub of 3 but others have now been also fully reborn. First time at the Island for me in this one, now in black livery but originally white with red and orange stripes
Note** Due to an oversupply of profiles by entrants this year you can see many more on the VHRR Website - vhrr.com/wp/phillip-island/ and go to Competitor Profiles

Mark Goldsmith - 1966 ELFIN 400 Ford Cobra #BB661
Elfin’s first large sports car was the Type 400 of which just four were built, each with a different motor. 1966 number 1 Ford Cobra V8 1966 number 2 Traco-Oldsmobile V8, the first to race on a track. 1967 number 3 Repco – Brabham V8 ( the first fitment to a non- Jack Brabham car ) 1968 number 4 Chevrolet V8 The 400 was very successful especially in the hands of Frank Matich who proved unbeatable in 1966 winning the Australia Sports Car Championship.
The Elfin Company was established in 1959 by Garrie Cooper in Adelaide and dominated Australian open wheeler and sports car racing, winning 29 national titles between 1962 and 1978. Cooper and his small team built 248 cars in 27 models from Formula Vee to Formula 5000.
He never received the recognition he deserved and died at just 46 in 1982. Elfin eventually moved to Melbourne and in 1997 Bill Hemming and Nick Kovatch bought the business and specialised in Clubmans of which he delivered 70 kit and completed cars.
Later he developed the GMH V8 powered MS8 Clubman and Streamliner. In 2006 Walkinshaw Racing bought Elfin and Bill established the Elfin Heritage Centre. This vehicle It was initially fitted with a 4700cc (289ci) Ford Cobra V8 but quickly upgraded to 5000cc. Accessorised with a Shelby Cobra inlet manifold, 4 X 48 IDA WEBER carburettors, and a Hewland LG 500 Transaxle.
This car # BB661 whilst was the first car started, was completed after the Frank Matich car, #BB662. It was delivered to Globe Products owner, Dick Bassett for Noel Hurd to drive. This car was also used as a running test bed for a prototype Quad Cam Ford racing engine that Globe were developing largely driven by engineering wizard Kevin Drage. Motorsport rule changes put an end to this engine development.
Keith Rilestone took the drivers position in the car that had now had a shorter nose. After a year the car was sold to successful Adelaidean racer, Stan Keen who had great success in racing and also broke the Collingrove outright record in 1972 of 32.40secs.
In the same year Tasmanian Max Thompson campaigned the car predominantly on the Isle where it underwent further body changes. After a major accident the car was sold locally to Bert Howard who returned it to the Elfin Factory for repair.
Whilst there Garrie Cooper upgraded body pontoons and chassis to the 80’s style. Competition was confined to Tasmania but it did return to SA to compete in a support event at F1 Grand Prix in 1992 In 2014 Mark Goldsmith purchased it and returned it to Adelaide.
Over the next 4 years it underwent a complete strip-down and returned the chassis design, body, and fit out to its 1966 origins. Even the colour is back to the original chosen by Dick Bassett to match his Jaguar at the time. Rollbar Seatbelt, and other safety changes were made to meet current compliance.

Sc 1974 Datsun 260Z. The car was built up from someone else’s forgotten project as a bare shell and many boxes of bits (some missing). The car was completed in 2019 but development has been interrupted by Covid and mainly raced in Queensland. I came into motorsport
late in life. I have previously competed in Tarmac rally events in our Rally ’74 260Z. This car was allowed to run as an “invited” Gp S & T in the HRCC meetings which gave me the taste to get involved in Group S Historics.

Historic Formula Ford will again field a massive grid of 58 cars at the upcoming Phillip Island Classic, which will include an excellent representation of overseas drivers.
“The international support for historic FF racing allows for drivers from right around the world to compete at Phillip Island in cars that are very similar to those they race in both the UK and Europe” said Ecurie Australie principal Chris Davison, “and they return home with glowing reports of their time in Australia and the magnificent Phillip Island circuit and event”.
This year sees the return of UK gun driver Richard Tarling, along with Frenchman Xavier Michel and Irishman James Hagen. Of special interest will be UK FF team owner, Brian Soule, who has been invited to drive John Blanchard’s Van Dieman after John had to withdraw due to a bike accident. Swiss driver, Gislain Genecand, who is a regular HHF driver in both Europe and the UK, he will drive the Ecurie Australie 84FF Reynard, whilst young UK driver Joe Ahrens will have his first outing in the MT086 Quest. This year has been especially difficult pulling this together, due to the enormous uncertainty of travel due to Covid, but both Ian Tate of the VHRR and Michael Smith of Motorsport Australia have been very supportive of gaining the required Covid “sports” visas
Congratulations Ian Tate OAM!
Wednesday, the 26th of January, 2022 marked a very special day for everyone on the historic racing scene. Our very own Mr. President, Ian Tate, or should I say Ian Tate OAM, was included in the Australia Day honours list, receiving an Order of Australia Medal for his services to historic motorsport. This, as I’ve been told, is the first of its kind, which in itself is very special. Most years, someone from motorsport in general gains an award signifying the contribution they have made and respect that the recipient has gained from the racing community, however, not once has there been a specific “historic motorsport” OAM presented. In my eyes, there is no one more deserving of such a prestigious accolade than Ian, and although no accolade can ever do his contributions justice, it is a very fitting one nonetheless. As we all know, Ian has done wonders for our great club that we know and love today, and without his commitment, I’m certain we wouldn’t be in the position we are today. His care for each and every one of the Victorian Historic Racing Register’s members is unrivalled, and speaks volumes about the gentleman he is.
For me personally, I know for a fact I wouldn’t be where I am now without his endless support for a young fella’s dare to dream, from day one I was welcomed, shown the ropes and had everything to convince me that historic racing was the way to go, little did Ian know, I needed no convincing whatsoever. I vividly remember my first ever visit to the Box Hill club rooms, as a quiet, 13 year old boy with an insanely strong passion for racing, where Mr. Tate dropped his preparations for the Tuesday night’s MGM, conversations and everything else to welcome me through the door and explain to me absolutely every detail I needed to know about the club.
Ian’s support since then has been overwhelming, and I can honestly say with the help of “Tatey”, my dream has turned reality, and myself and my family will never be able to express our level of gratitude for his incredible support and countless gestures towards making it all happen. Although I’m sure many of our member’s could share stories that credit the sheer generosity and care that our club President possesses, there’s just a little bit of insight as to why the accolade could not have been awarded to a better man for me.
To Mr. Ian Tate OAM, I’m sure I say on behalf of all historic racing folks, a massive congratulations on such a deserving recognition for your years worth of hard work, commitment, care, contribution, and passion to make our fantastic club and sport what it is today.
A truly great achievement for an even greater man.
Built in England during May 1984 this car was imported to the United States by Royale UK & USA owner Hubert Kleinpeter, which he extensively raced as a Royale USA factory car from June 84 to March 85 his lowest placing was 2nd. Kleinpeter ordered the RP37 chassis #011 material to be constructed in Bs L72 (2014-T4 U.S. equivalent) aluminium, Bs L72 material is more expensive and harder to work with and requires larger radius on the folds or it will crack; it is stronger and lighter than NS4 aluminium. So that the car stood out in the field of around twenty and twenty-five S2000 cars, Kleinpeter had the car body painted in Grass Green, which is similar color to John Deere farm machinery, thus the car was known amongst the field (competition) as the John Deere tractor, as it was the only green color sports 2000 in the SE Division at that time. Second owner was Dennis Greene of Gainesville, GA. Third owner was Harry O, “Scott” Evers from Dallas, TX. Fourth was Sterling Robertson of Abilene, Texas. Fifth owner Norman Scott of Dacula, Georgia First place in American Road Race of Champions held at Road Atlanta in 2002. Trevor Ross present owner of Victoria Australia, purchased the car from Norman Scott on 8th August 2008, While waiting to be shipped to Australia, Car was parked in a large warehouse, surrounded by the cars used in the movie Fast
and Furious. Shipped from the port of Savannah, Georgia on 8th October 2008, and finally arriving in the port of Melbourne, on 8th December 2008.
Driver Profile: Trevor Ross This is the only race car I have owned - It a real joy to drive. With sustained cornering and brake loadings near 2g’s and the relative safety of the aluminium or tube-framed chassis structure, these cars are roomy and very competent! They’re classic in their appearance to the great sports racers of the day. A well-tuned Pinto motor output is approximately 145 – 150 hp, at 7000 rpm, coupled with a low center of gravity, light weight, slicks and efficient aerodynamics will generate lap speeds in the mid 210 km / hr range. What’s even more remarkable is how equal all of the chassis are in terms of performance potential, making Sports 2000 a real “driver’s class”. What ever your experience or motivation, you’ll be able to find someone to race with. A quick lap time is all about good technique and maintaining momentum through corners, Aluminium monocoque chassis, glued and riveted together like an airplane fuselage, Sports 2000 cars are “mini Can-Am cars” in construction and very nearly in performance!

John Tarran - Lotus 61 originally built in 1969 and sold to a gentleman called Wimm Beers who ran a race team in Holland. It won the Dutch FF Championship in 1970. This is why the vehicle is painted dark blue red and white as these are the colours of the Netherlands Flag.
Not much is known of the vehicle after the early 70’s. It arrived in Australia around 1982 imported by Bill Harris of Alexis race cars. It was sold as a rolling chassis to Jeremy Kenyon and then moved onto Jeremy Braithwaite who rebuilt it and gained the first Australian Formula Ford Historic Log Book. Jeremy and others drove it very well during his ownership and also took the vehicle to race in the US. Keith Edwards purchased the vehicle in the late 1990’s and carried out a freshen up and we purchased in 2001. I have raced the vehicle every year since and we have rebuilt it several times. Competing in the vehicle has allowed us to travel the Eastern States of Australia and we have met some characters and made great friends along the way.
Running the car is a family affair with my mum Rosemary and John Snr and my long suffering partner Karissa all working to keep the vehicle race ready. Paul Liston and Joe Farugia from Listec Race cars are always on hand to help out with chassis and suspension repairs when needed.
The vehicle is entered under the “Black Pig Racing” banner as I had an old black pig, a pet called Kevin, who recently passed away after 16 years. He was a favorite among my motor racing mates.
We have raced the vehicle in Historics, State racing and also several National FF rounds. The vehicle has competed at Bathurst 4 times.
I am an automotive service manager running a workshop specialising in Kia and Isuzu Ute vehicles. I have been in the motor industry for over 30 years. I have a collection of Land Rovers which date from 1948 through to the early 80’s Hopefully we can continue racing as a family with this vehicle for many years.
Colin Connaughton - Alfetta GTV No. 57 is one of three cars built in the workshops of well known Melbourne Alfa Romeo specialist, Hugh Harrison, in 2007. Phil Baskett and Scott Farquarson had the first two cars, and I bought the Farquarson car in mid-2008, taking it to Sydney. Hugh’s own car took a few years (!) longer to be finished, but is clearly the fastest of the three. This may have something to do with the driver (mine’s the slowest …) Built as a Group S logged car, it is representative of cars raced by amateur owner/drivers in the 1970’s. It’s straightforward to look after and a lot of fun to drive. I came to Group S from racing
go-karts when I discovered that I could no longer get out of one without assistance! Since I was then in my sixties, a race car with doors seemed like a prudent choice. In the years since, the Alfetta and I have contested more than seventy meetings at race tracks in NSW, Victoria and Queensland, including seven times at VHRR Phillip Island, which has become our annual “must enter” meeting. How long can our partnership continue? I’m not sure, but Group S Alfa Romeo campaigners Colin Wilson-Brown and Lyndon McLeod have a few years on me, so I can’t stop yet!

After the rollercoaster that was 2021, with countless false starts, postponements and cancellations, I think it’s fair to say that many of us are hoping for a much smoother year in 2022. Although this year, for me personally, was the best year of motorsport I’ve had to date, I’d love to see what we could’ve done given the opportunity to keep momentum rolling, rather than having much longer than expected breaks between meetings. There’s the thing with racing, or any sport for that matter, no matter what, you’re always wanting more. Reflecting back on this year though, I’m pleased with our progress, seeing as at the start of the season I’d never even started a competitive race, to go from that to picking up our first pole, wins and podiums all in the same year was huge. With the experience I’ve gained this season, learning from both the highs and lows of racing and taken them in my stride, I’m confident rolling into the New Year that we can further build on those learnings, and put all we’ve learnt so far into a cracking Historic Racing campaign, with the intent to learn more of course, too!
Our year, as always, will get underway at Phillip Island, and let’s be honest, is there a better place to start the season?
Seeing as that’s where I started my racing journey last year, it’ll be really interesting to take a look at just how far we’ve come since, and work on the things we walked away in 2021 knowing we could improve on.
Overall, 2022 is set to be a cracker of a year, March can’t come quick enough! Hope everyone’s had a great Christmas break, I look forward to catching you all trackside in the New Year!
Josh LowingIn July 2011, a couple of men looking for an adventure decided that it would be a good idea to ride form Perth to Melbourne on motorbikes. This was not a new or novel idea. Many have travelled this path before and no doubt will again. But this is different and with a purpose for a cause.
Not being motorcyclists it was agreed that it would be a better idea if these men rode “old postie bikes”, using red Honda CT110s which travel at the sedate speed of a maximum of approximately 80kph. The postie bikes allow the rider to cover approx. 120 kms on one tank of petrol and would therefore provide an interesting challenge across the Nullabor. Apparently this had been done in 2010 by another group.
As men do, they told their friends and colleagues. Soon this group began to grow with interested parties expressing their desire to participate and share in this challenging journey. So a plan was hatched and formulated by the two leaders of this “pack”.
Men’s health needs exposure, support and research so it was decided that funds raised would be directed to raising community awareness of prostate cancer and associated issues and to provide support for men diagnosed with this disease.
Eight years on our goals, although refined, remain unchanged and over one million dollars has been raised through sponsorship and donations which has enabled us to work with rural communities to provide specialist medical equipment for safe, accurate prostate cancer biopsy.
I am honored to have been the official patron of The Male Bag Ride/Foundation since April 2013, when 25 men decided to ride ex-postie Honda 110 motorcycles from Perth to Melbourne. Moving forward we have since organised a further five rides, round Tasmania in 2014, Victoria in 2015, Gippsland in 2016, Echuca/Moama region in 2017 and Victoria/Canberra/ NSW in 2018.
Following the initial Perth to Melbourne ride work began to establish the foundation as a registered not-for-profit charity. We can now proudly say every cent of fund raising is directed to prostate care outcomes in regional areas - outcomes that would otherwise not be met.
Supported by so many people (riders, crew, sponsors, families and general public) we have now collected in excess of $1 million. This is used to raise awareness, purchase public hospital testing equipment, and provide patient nursing support, to fight prostate cancer in Australia.
It is important that we continue to spread the word about prostate cancer, in the hope that we can save more men from this insidious disease that kills over 3000 Australian men every year. Our website www.themalebagfoundation.org.au will provide you with more details of how you can help us with this work.
In it’s 50 year history Larry and Terry Perkins are the only siblings to have ever both won the Australian Formula Ford title. Larry achieving the win in the series second year in 1971 at the wheel of one of Garrie Cooper’s Elfin 600’s. Terry took the prestigious title just 3 years later in 1974 again at the wheel of an Australian built Elfin, but this time a 620 model.
Terry finished 5th in the 1973 TAA Formula Ford Driver to Europe Series, and then just like his brother went on to win it the following year beating the likes of Geoff Brabham in his Bowin P6f. After taking the TAA Driver to Europe Title in 1974 Terry did just that and joined his brother to Europe.
Terry ran as team mate to Larry in the inaugural European F3 Cup season going on to finish equal 4th at the wheel of a Ralt RT-1 run by Ron Tauranac Racing. He ended his season by winning the final race of the series in Denmark at Djurslandring. During the 1975 season Terry also competed in 4 rounds of the British BP Super Visco F3 Championship.
For 1976 Terry teamed up with Graham Eden Racing at the wheel of a Sana RD9 (Ford BDA) in the 1976 British Atlantic Championship and the 1976 Shellsport International Series for Formula Libre cars. After limited outings and poor results Terry disappeared from international motorsport.
Larry finished 5th in the 1970 Australian Formula Ford series, but followed up in 1971 by winning the National Formula Ford ‘Driver to Europe Series’ at the wheel of one of Garrie Cooper’s Elfin 600’s. After winning the “Driver To Europe” and then the Australian Formula 2 Championship in 1972 (again in an Elfin 600).
At the end of the year Larry travelled to the UK to compete in the inaugural 1972 Formula Ford Festival finishing 3rd in the final in an Elfin 620. Alongside him were a number of other Australians including Buzz Buzagloo in the works Elden Mk10a, John Leffler in a Bowin P4a, Bob Skelton in a Bowin P6f and Peter Finlay in his ex Buzzagloo Palliser.
Larry Perkins travelled to Europe where he won the 1975 European Formula 3 Championship in a Ron Tauranac run Ralt RT-1. He would go on to race in Formula One during the 1974, 1976 and 1977 seasons. After failing to secure a permanent drive in Formula One he returned down under taking 2nd place in the 1978 Peter Stuyvesant International Formula Pacific Series in a Ralt RT1, 3rd in the 1978/9 Formula Pacific New Zealand International Series in a March 78B, and winning the Rothmans International Series in 1979 in an Elfin MR8 Formula 5000 for the Ansett Team Elfin factory run by Elfin Sports Cars founder Garrie Cooper.
In the early 80’s Larry also had international outings alongside Peter Brock at the LeMans 24 hours in 1984 driving a John Fitzpatrick Racing Porsche 956B. He returned to LeMans in 1988 with Tom Walkinshaw Racing, this time driving a Jaguar XJR-9 LM Porsche 956B to outright 4th place. Unfortunately Larry’s talent would eventually be lost to tin tops as he carved out a career in Australian Touring Car racing eventually winning Bathurst a number of times.
The achievements of these two great Australian Motorsport ambassadors can be directly attributed to their early years in Australian Formula Ford. They helped Formula Ford in Australia become our breeding ground for future champions over the following 40+ years.
That's why we think it should be known as ‘THE PERKINS CUP’.

So it’s a low screen but with the 2 litre U20 motor.
I assembled the car from scratch as a dedicated race car. The engine has a complete rebuild but is built to the factory specs of the Datsun Racing Teams US car number 4. It's obviously a compliant Group Sb Log Booked car. I am late 40s and got involved with Datsuns a few years ago
when I started restoring a Datsun Fairlady with my son. I soon had a collection and was convinced to try racing by making a dedicated race car. A few years later and lots of money and time and tears and here we are.
2021 was my first race season but due to covid I only got to race a few times and Sydney Motorsport Park and Morgan Park. Here’s hoping 2022 will be more fun.
Victoria is largely that of VACC as well.
Shortly after the first internal combustionpowered automobile was patented in Europe, vehicles began arriving on our shores and quickly moved onto Australia’s primitive road network.
Innovative Australians, like Harley Tarrant, began building their own local cars and, from there, parts suppliers and bodymakers sprung up to support a fledgling vehicle manufacturing industry.
By 1918, Victoria boasted over 15,000 vehicles (largely imported) and 27,000 licensed drivers, and there were already hundreds of small businesses, located across metropolitan and regional areas, retailing, servicing and repairing the new transport fleet – cars, motorcycles, commercials, trucks and farm machinery.
By then, Victoria’s rapidly growing retail automotive industry – the selling, servicing and repairing of vehicles – was maturing and required direction.
Automotive business owners desperately needed an umbrella body charged with protecting and promoting their interests.
Around this time, car dealers Henry and Percy Rickards foresaw that international counterparts could force burgeoning local companies out of the marketplace.
The brothers called together a collection of garage proprietors at the Bendigo Chamber of Commerce rooms on 20 September 1918 and registered a new industry association, the Retail Motor
In the interest of enlarging the association’s scope to cover all the motor trades, the association renamed itself the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce (VACC) in 1920.
Present day issues, such as industrial disputes, hourly rates and skill shortages were already occurring, so VACC introduced a number of sectoral committees to address these challenges.
This was the foundation of VACC’s current operation, which is overseen by an Executive Board comprised of members from a diverse field of automotive operations.
To house staff and accommodate committee and board gatherings, VACC purchased property on St Kilda Road, Melbourne, in 1956 and on 4 September 1958 – almost 40 years to the day since its inception – Victorian Premier, Henry Bolte opened VACC House, the occasion celebrated with a vehicle cavalcade and eight-page newspaper supplement.
Over the years, VACC has grown to incorporate all facets of the automotive industry, including passenger vehicles, motorcycles, heavy vehicles and farm machinery in the retail, service and repair sectors.
Now known as the Victorian Automotive Chamber of Commerce, VACC also incorporates the Skills Development Centre, VACC Automotive Apprenticeships, and Women in Automotive network, along with a commercial arm, OurAuto, which provides products and services to the national
VACC provides key business support services to 5,000 business-owner members, including:
• Industry policy and advocacy
• Automotive industry research
• Technical information and support
• Communications and publications
• Automotive industry skills, training and careers.
VACC was born while Aussie soldiers still battled in the trenches of World War I and has weathered the Great Depression, a second World War, the Melbourne and Sydney Olympic Games, the ‘recession we had to have’, dozens of prime ministers, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
During VACC’s 100-year long journey, the internal combustion engine asserted itself as the preferred vehicle power source, safety innovations like seat belts and anti-lock braking were invented, vehicles became ‘connected’ and, of course, electric vehicles and ride-sharing have already begun to dramatically alter the marketplace.
Through it all, VACC has been there for its members – protecting and promoting them – so that they can be there for you.
VACC members constructed, retailed, serviced and repaired race cars from early days.

The Porsche 956 and it’s variants were built to dominate the Le Mans 24 Hour and after seven Le Mans victories, five Daytona 24 Hour wins, six driver world championships, five manufacturer and team world championships and four IMSA series championships these cars earned the title of the most successful race car of all time.
This example 956 – 118 was the last of the customer Porsche 956’s built. Campaigned successfully by Australian Le Mans winner Vern Schuppan in the Japanese Sports Car Championship in 1984/85/86.
Built to comply with the championship's new Group C regulations which were introduced in 1982, the car was a replacement for Porsche's successful 936 model which competed in the previous Group 6 category of the World Championship. The project began in June 1981, and the first prototype chassis was completed on March 27, 1982, in time for the beginning of the World Championship season. Jürgen Barth tested the first chassis at Porsche's private test track.
The 956 features a chassis made of an aluminium monocoque, a first for the company, helping to allow the car to meet the 800 kg (1,764 lb) weight minimum in Group C. The engine is the same as the one used in the Porsche 936/81, the Type-935 2.65 L turbocharged Flat-6, producing approximately 635 hp (474 kW) (originally developed as an Indycar engine; hence the cubic capacity used). The very first dual-clutch gearbox was also designed for the 956, mated to a traditional 5-speed manual.
An improved chassis with better fuel efficiency from a Bosch Motronic electric system was developed for 1984, being termed the 956B. In total, twenty-eight 956s would be built by Porsche from 1982 to 1984, with an unofficial 29th chassis built from spare parts by Richard Lloyd Racing. The 956 was also the first Porsche to have ground effect aerodynamics. As a comparison, the ground effects Porsche 956 produced over three times as much downforce as the older model Porsche 917 that raced over a decade earlier.
In 1983, 956 chassis #107 was used by Porsche as a testbed for their P01
Formula One engine, later badged as TAG and used exclusively by McLaren. The car was able to test some of the characteristics of a Formula One car in order to develop the engine. The engine became highly successful in F1, and while never the most powerful on the grid, between 1984 and 1987, the turbocharged TAG-Porsche would win 25 Grands Prix and help McLaren to two Constructors and three World Driver's Championships. As of the 2012 German Grand Prix, the TAG-Porsche engine sits in 7th place on the list of F1 race winning engines.
A Porsche 956 mounted upside down in a museum exhibit.
The Porsche 956 mounted upside down at the Porsche Museum to symbolize its legendary downforce.
Porsche tested its Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) dualclutch transmission in the 956 in the early 1980s.[2] PDK would be used in the Porsche 962, and would eventually make its way into production Porsches with the 2009 997 Carrera and Carrera S.
The Porsche 956 also appeared with two different rear wing designs. The cars were fitted with a larger, high downforce rear wing for most events. For the Circuit de la Sarthe at Le Mans however where top speed on the almost 6 km (4 mi) long Mulsanne Straight was essential, the 956 was fitted with a much lower and smaller 'low drag' wing to enable the cars to reach speeds of around 225 mph (362 km/h). Some of the privateer teams would also experiment with a front wing attached to the cars at the tighter circuits in an effort to increase front downforce, but wind tunnel testing eventually found that these wings were disrupting the airflow over the car and actually increased the aerodynamic drag making the cars slower in a straight line. Notably, the factory backed Rothmans Porsche team did not make use of the smaller front wings. Many attributed this to the fact that the Rothmans cars used a one piece body undertray which helped increase the downforce generated by the ground effect aerodynamics while the customer 956's used a twin undertray which disrupted the air flow and slightly decreased the downforce.[3]
The 956 would be officially replaced by the Porsche 962 in 1985, an evolution in the 956's design. Wikipedia

The 1972 Bathurst 500 was the 13th running of the Bathurst 500 race and the last to be held over the original distance of 500 miles. After complaints from the dealers in 1972, John Barshaw Holden’s Director of Sales approached Peter Lewis-Williams now working for George Patterson’s advertising agency to go together with the new ad agency to create a distinctive colour scheme.
Peter: “I remember we painted my car, dropped it down on the mag wheels, stood back and thought this is the best looking race car ever.” Harry made Peter come to the workshop every day. Weeks before Bathurst he sat in his car on the stands, no engine, no gearbox, focus on the job ahead. At the Sandown 500 most XU1’s retired with piston failure - faulty heat treating. With new pistons I rebuilt the engine. We had no dyno facilities, so Peter and I drove the cars to Bathurst to run them in. Peter: “I remember Ian and I drove the cars to Bathurst and in those days you had to prove you could drive safely in NSW. Near West Wylong we decided to open them up, I wanted to test some slip streaming, we lined them up, identical performances around Cowra but as night began to fall we went over road works. I was sitting behind Tatie and all of a sudden my lights disappeared and he thought Brockie’s playing funny buggers, he’s switched his lights off. I will fix him. So he gets stuck into it trying to lose me, I had no lights and a damaged windscreen.” Early next morning at Bathurst Motors before Harry arrived we fitted new headlights, parking lights & windscreen.
Victory was Peter’s first of many. And an enormous thrill for GMH and our small underfunded race team.
Peter: “For the first few laps I couldn’t see, I could only see his tail and stop lights when braking. I was following Moffatt and had to rely on his brake lights. I couldn’t have picked anyone better to follow, he’s dead safe to race against."
Peter finished one lap in front of John French in his GTHO.

Team Swinburne Formula SAE is a student-led motorsport team from Swinburne University of Technology.
The team, founded in 1999, allows for students across the entirety of the university to participate in crossdisciplinary collaboration and facilitates the practical application of theoretical classroom knowledge. Each year Team Swinburne Formula SAE strives to design, build, and compete a formula- style electric racecar for the Formula SAE-A competition.
At the competition, the team competes against other university’s teams from across the country and internationally.
All of the teams are evaluated on vehicle performance, management processes, engineering design, and business operation through a series of dynamic and static events.
Currently the team is working towards building its first ever all-wheel drive electric racecar with hub motors, TS_22, in preparation for the 2022 Formula SAE-A competition.
This will make us only one of a few teams to have made the transition to building and competing an all-wheel drive electric racecar.
Team Swinburne Formula SAE is also in the process of completing our first ever autonomous racecar for competition, converting our 2019 contender TS_19, into an autonomous vehicle. See us in the EXPO Centre

1st Race car purchased in 1969, an original Appendix J FJ Holden, 1st in class Australia Hill climb Championship 1972, even wins at Hume Weir. Retired when married in 1974, resumed racing in 1984 with the Ex Alan Grice, Harry Bargwanna XU1 Torana, next the ex John Bourke EH Sports Sedan fitted with a Duggan Head, then a Mark 1 Escort with a 13B peripheral Rotary Engine. 1991 the 911 Porsche Cup car, now the Group S car, also owned Porsche GT3, Ex Brain Callahan Walkinshaw VL Commodore, the ex Gary Rogers Walkinshaw VL Commodore.
My motor racing history began mid 1982 with a Galloway Formula Ford which I ran in the then TAA Driver to Europe series in preparation for the 1983 National series.
I contested 8 rounds of the series winning 5 rounds including the final round run at Winton in a brand new car given to me to get the Van Diemen name circulating as a formidable marque against the local manufacturers.
I won the National series and the Coca Cola state series, for the good of the category winners could not continue competing so I moved up to the Australian National Formula one category in 1984 purchasing a Ralt RT4 formerly driven by Robert Moreno where I finished 4th in the Australian Gold Star.
My highlight of that year was undoubtedly running in the 1984 Australian Grand Prix with the likes of Niki Lauda, Keke Rosberg, Roberto Moreno, John Bowe, Alfie Costanzo etc
The car I have entered for Phillip Island is an Elwyn 003, the last car built by Elwyn Bickley who has been a friend of mine for over 50yrs.
The car is a combination of all his skills and ideas culminating with his last attempt at making another one of his cars competitive with the likes of Van Diemen, Reynard, Swift etc.
It is designed primarily on the basis of his earlier cars which there were 11 in total built.
The car has not been raced anywhere except NSW in its short racing life as an Historic Formula Ford.

As far as my Driver Profile is concerned, there isn’t much to say.
I have always had a passion for cars, both road and race.
I started doing Sprints with the HSV Car Club of Victoria then commenced racing in late 2018 in a Hyundai until I got the hang of door to door racing after which I competed in the state Sports sedan series where in 2019 and 2021 came second overall, in the Dodo Car.
I also showed the car off and raced in the Super 3 series in 2019 although it was too competitive for me.
I purchased a dedicated Sports Sedan in the middle of 2021 and have parked the Dodo car for a while until this event (Phillip Island Classic) came up as well as a new Kumho V8 Classic this year. Looking forward to driving it again with my first round at SMP.
Andrew
Originally an MG TC. Converted to a single seat race car around 1954. It was campaigned by three successive owners, Murray Nankervis, Dan Landrigan, and Andrew Rennie until it was acquired by Lou Molina and redesigned to its present form.
Lou Molina raced the car until 1995 when it passed into the hands of Ian Mawson. Ian actively participated in racing with the MG Car Club and the J,K, and Lb categories until 2014 when it was acquired by Aubrey Paverd, A complete rebuild of the car was undertaken in 2017, following engine failure at a race meeting in Winton. Particular care was taken preserve the original features of the car.
For example it was not repainted and original decals, such as the Lou Molina’s scorpion emblem have been saved.
Aubrey Paverd sadly passed in 2020 the Paverd Family requested the custodianship of Vulgarilla be passed on to Aubreys longtime Friend, Crew Chief and MG Enthusiast Andrew Church ,who continues to campaign the car.
Driver info - Andrew Church - MGTC Nicknamed “Vulgarilla”
I have always had a passion of all things Motorsport and cars, my family has been involved with it so I guess I caught the bug, I purchased my first race car early January 2014 and continue to enjoy the thrills Motorsport.

California, where it was located in 2011. The car was imported and with the substantial assistance of engineering specialist Peter Backhouse from Twin Cam Services in Seaford, it was restored, formally classified as a Group R Sports car, and first raced at the Phillip Island Classic in 2012. It has been raced extensively on the East Coast since then, winning the Sports 2000 National Series in 2013.
Bob has been heavily involved in the administration of the Sport having been a member of the CAMS Historic Commission since 1994, its Chairman from 2008 – 2018, and is currently Deputy Chairman. In 2016 he was awarded a CAMS Service Star for services to Historic Motor Sport.

Nominated by VHRR member (Printed name & signature) Seconded by VHRR member (printed name & signature) Club Championship entry - if you intend to compete in VHRR events and wish to be in contention for the Championship please tick this box I agree to allow the VHRR to release my contact details
The VHRR was established in 1976 to promote Historic Motor Racing in Victoria, and where possible assist with its growth throughout Australia. Race meetings and speed events are held thoughout the year, giving owners of historic racing cars, and those interested in such vehicles, the opportunity to exercise their cars and feel the exhilaration of running such fine machinery, or just to be close by.
The club has been so successful over the years that meetings held at the Grand Prix Circuit at Phillip Island in February/March, and at Sandown Park in November, now attract some of the most awe-inspiring cars from Australia, New Zealand, and the rest of the world. We regularly see cars from the UK, USA, Germany, Hong Kong etc. Ferrari, A/Romeo, BRM, Maserati, Cooper, Jaguar, HMW, Maybach, MG, Lago Talbot, plus many Australian specials.
Many overseas owners and drivers find the warmth of the welcome at these meetings, the charisma of racing at these fabulous circuits, and the Australian hospitality, brings them back to this country year after year.
It is not necessary to own your own historic car. Many VHRR members join the club to be involved in the historic movement. To assist if they wish, or to merely enjoy the vicarious pleasures of historic racing. The VHRR caters for cars meeting the requirements of the 5th Category in Australia, or invited cars.
At race meetings you might see open wheeled racing cars, flashy racing sports cars. Formula Ford, Formula Junior, Touring Cars from the 1920’s to the 1980’s. Some of the cars are driven by well-known racing identities still keeping their hand in. A world champion might even make an appearance!
So whether you race, or just want to watch, the VHRR has full race meetings, hill climbs or speed events to cater for you.
