Welcome to the 2017 VHRR Phillip Island Classic “Festival of Motorsport”. We are proud to announce our naming rights sponsors for this 2017 event being BURSON AUTO PARTS and AUTOBARN jointly. Mercedes-Benz W196 The Mercedes-Benz W196 was a Formula One racing car produced by Mercedes-Benz for the 1954 and 1955 F1 seasons. Successor to the W194, in the hands of Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss it won 9 of 12 races entered and captured the only two world championships in which it competed. Firsts included the use of desmodromic valves and DaimlerBenz developed mechanical direct fuel injection adapted from the DB 601 high-performance V12 used on the Messerschmitt Bf 109E fighter during World War II. The new 1954 Formula One rules allowed a choice of naturally aspirated engines – up to 2.5 litres or 0.75 litres supercharged. The expected target range for competitive engines was 250 to 300 bhp (190 to 220 kW).

Mercedes' 1939 2-stage supercharged 1.5-litre 64.0×58.0 mm V8 (1,493 cc or 91.1 cu in) gave 278 bhp (207 kW) at 8,250 rpm with about 2.7 atm (270 kPa) pressure. Halving this would have only produced 139 bhp (104 kW). Studies by Mercedes showed that 390 bhp (290 kW) at 10,000 rpm could be achieved from 0.75 litres with a supercharger pressure of 4.4 atm (450 kPa), with 100 hp (75 kW) required to drive the supercharger. Fuel consumption of this 290 bhp (220 kW) net engine would have been 2.3 times higher than a naturally aspirated one developing the same power. Since 115 bhp/l (86 kW/l) at 9,000 rpm was being developed by naturally aspirated motorcycle racing engines, it was decided that a 2.5-litre engine was the correct choice. This was a significant change of philosophy,

since all previous Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix engines since the 1920s had been supercharged. Mercedes' solution was to adapt direct fuel injection Daimler-Benz engineers had refined on the DB 601 highperformance V12 used on the Messerschmitt Bf 109E fighter. By its introduction at the 1954 French GP the 2,496.87 cc (152.368 cu in) (76.0×68.8 mm) desmodromic valves straight 8 delivered 257 bhp (192 kW). The W196 was the only F1 car with such advanced fuel technology, giving it a considerable advantage over the other carburetted engines. Variable length inlet tracts were experimented with and four wheel drive considered. An eventual 340 bhp (250 kW) at 10,000 rpm was targeted for the 2.5-litre F1 motor. Wikipedia

AMS volunteers wearing pink vests will be circulating with collection tins and they will have an Information Stand in the Expo Centre selling Raffle tickets to raise funds for their research into a cure for neoroblastoma. You Are My Sunshine Foundation was established as a not-for-profit charity in Phillip Island by Jude Donahoo in September 2009. It is in memory of her beloved granddaughter Kahlilla who was a neuroblastoma sufferer. At that time, there was no dedicated funding for neuroblastoma in Australia. Our focus is to fund research, with the aim of finding a cure for neuroblastoma, an aggressive and often deadly childhood cancer that affects very young children. Almost half of children diagnosed with advanced disease will die, despite aggressive treatment. The group 'Band of Parents' described this journey with such clarity …. "the treatments are extreme and painful for the children to undergo and emotionally devastating for parents to watch. Kids lose their hair and pink cheeks, and they become vulnerable to serious infections and viruses when chemotherapy destroys their immunity. They often cry in pain during countless invasive procedures. It is unbearable to know that 50% of these children will still die in their anguished

ffered for sale is this very rare 1959 ELFIN GTS. It is the only coupe Elfin ever built.

In 1959 Gary Cooper & George Spanos sat down and discussed the design of the GTS coupe for the new GT Class. During the discussion, Gary and George had sketched a side profile of the GTS coupe, which George was happy with, a deal was made and the coupe was built. The Elfin is still owned by George today. It has a very extensive documented race history in Australia within the period from 1960 to 2013 and raced by George Spanos & Wayne Sayers. That is when, in 2014 George and the Elfin retired from motor racing. The Elfin has a full tube space frame chassis and handmade aluminium body. The engine is a race prepared BMC 1500 B series with steel crank

shaft, forged pistons, H beam conrods, Derrington alloy cross flow head with twin 45mm Webbers. It has MGA alloy cased CR gearbox, the diff is BMC A series with 3.9 ratio. The front brakes are discs with twin piston Girling calipers and rear brakes are drum.

The Elfin has never had to be restored as it has always been maintained to a high standard for motor racing, the whole car is in immaculate condition. This Elfin is race ready and Road registered with Victorian number plates (ELFIN). FOR SALE $245,000.00 Wayne Sayers Ph: 0408 512 402

his Lola 163 was a special lightweight version built to order for the Penske Team.

The car was driven by Mark Donohue at MidOhio 17/8/69 where he qualified 3rd behind the McLaren M8Bs of Denny Hulme and Bruce McLaren. After just 8 laps the car broke a half-shaft just as it had done in practice and the car retired. Roger Penske terminated the entire Can-Am program and sold everything to Eno de Pasquale who retained the Donohue car until 2008. The car was fully restored by Zac Brown before being sold to Aaron Lewis.

RA R5B was the second of three B-Types ordered by Prince Chula of Siam for the 'White Mouse' team he ran together with his cousin Prince B.Bira, who was responsible for the driving. To distinguish the new car from its stablemate, R5B was nick-named 'Remus' after one of the two twins that according to myth founded ancient Rome after being raised by a pack of wolves. It was used together R2B, or 'Romulus', during the 1936 season, but it was not nearly as successful as the sister car. It did manage to score a victory in the Albi Grand Prix, although against minimal competition. The following season R5B was used for spares and subsequently sold to Tony Rolt. Rolt was more successful behind the wheel of 'Remus', scoring several victories, highlighted by a win in the 1939 British Empire Trophy at Donnington. R2B was raced in contemporary events until 1949 by John Bolster, until a massive accident ended the car's period career. Fortunately the car was completely rebuilt and has since been one of the most successful ERAs in historic racing events, predominantly in Great Britain. Still liveried in Thailand's racing colours of blue and yellow, it is pictured above during the 2007 Goodwood Revival meeting.

British Motor racing was at an alltime low in 1933, Bentley's Le Mans domination seemed ages away and Britain's last international single seater success dated back to the early 1920s. A wealthy amateur racer felt something had to be done and he provided the finances for setting up a new company. The effort was headed by Raymond Mays, who had already scored many successes with Invictas and in 1933 had campaigned a Riley special. ERA (English Racing Automobiles) was the name picked for the company and cars. Reid Railton was hired as designer of the new car for the Voiturette class. Riley's straight six engine was the logical power choice after Mays' experience with it in 1933. The 'six' was by no means conventional, as it featuring camshafts on either side of the engine. One camshaft operated the intake valves, the other for the exhaust valves, both actuated by pushrods. Two engines were available in the first cars; a 1.1 litre and a 1.5 litre. Assisted by a large Roots-Type Supercharger the latter was good for around 166 bhp. Mated to the modified Riley unit was a Wilson preselector gearbox. Pre-selector gearboxes were very popular in the 1930s. Drivers selected the gear before using the clutch so that the selected gear was

automatically engaged when the clutch was pressed. Railton designed a ladder-frame chassis, much like that of the competitors. Front and rear suspension was made up of live axles, sprung by semi-elliptical leaf springs and damped by Hartford friction shock absorbers. Large drum brakes made sure the ERA stopped quickly to compliment its already fierce acceleration. A series of four A-Type ERAs, R1A through R4A, were built and raced by the works team in 1934 and 1935. For the first privateers, a slightly revised B-Type chassis featuring a more reliable engine became available in 1935. 13 of these were built, R1B through R14B. Chassis number 13 was not used for superstitious reasons. Customers included one of the best known privateers of the era; Prince Birabongse Bhanubandh, 'B.Bira' of Thailand. His three B-Types secured over 20 British and International victories. Most famous of all ERA drivers was Richard Seaman, whose performance in R1B earned him a spot in the MercedesBenz Works racing team. Lance Reventlow started Scarab sports cars in 1957 and in 1958 thought about building a Formula 1 Race Car, and, by the end of summer 1959 a rolling chassis had its first test drive at an airfield near Bakersfield, California. By May 1960 three Scarab chassis had been built – Numbers 1 and 2 as complete race cars, and number 3 the spare car, complete minus engine. All the art work for all the three cars had been painted by Von Dutch the famous American vehicle artist. Scarabs were entered and arrived for the 1960 Monaco Grand Prix, but, due to the arrival of the lighter, smaller and faster rear engined cars, the Scarabs were heavy and under powered and, after continual brake problems, they were eight seconds too slow for the final grid. They went on to enter the cars at Zandvoort and Spa, where chassis number 3 had arrived from Culver City, USA. Realising that the Scarab cars could not compete against the rear engined cars,

Lance Reventlow decided not to enter the Silverstone Grand Prix, but, to head back to the USA where he competed at Riverside. The following year Scarab, with Chuck Daigh driving, finished sixth at Goodwood, but, four months later at Silverstone he crashed chassis number 2 and wrote the car off. The car was not salvaged, but, members of RAI saved various parts including front and rear suspension, control arms, shocks and springs and two wheels. Some of the bodywork survived and Dick Troutman built a new Scarab frame to complete the ‘rebuild’ in the mid 1980’s. This left just two original Scarab F1 Race Cars – Chassis Number 1 and Chassis Number 3. Chassis Number 3 was acquired by Donald Devine of the USA in 1964 from two gentlemen from Virginia. The car did not have an engine or transmission, but, was complete with original suspension, fuel tank, drive shaft and had the original bodywork complete with the Von Dutch artwork. He owned the car for six years when it was then sold to a representative of Tom Wheatcroft for his car collection which was to go on to be the Donington Motor Museum, UK. The car was received by the Donington Museum in 1969, but, was not on display

until 1973. It was still minus an engine, but, clearly had an engine before the acquisition due to fuel pipes, pedalry and various connections still in situ. The Scarab Chassis Number 3 was acquired from the Donington Museum by Julian Bronson in November 2010 and since then an Offenhauser engine has been installed, the car given a complete and thorough check and is now a running chassis. Since then the car has enjoyed successes in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. It came a close second at the Historique Grand Prix de Monaco in 2016 (the first Scarab to ever compete at the event) and won the Richmond Trophy at the Goodwood Revival in the same year. It was also invited to open the Copenhagen Historic Grand Prix in 2013 and completed several demonstration laps as well as appearing on their local TV. E ERA R10B was made in 1936 a as a 1.5litre in black for P N ((Peter) Whitehead. Whitehead and his regular driving partner, a Peter Walker, drove the car P ssingly and as co-drivers. The b best result of the year being a tthird in the important Donington Park Grand Prix for the pair. In P 1937 R10B was raced in Britain, 1 France and Italy. Again both F W Whitehead and Walker drove. T following year, Whitehead The drove the car and had a long but d productive trip to win the 1938 p Australian Grand Prix and The A Rob Roy Hillclimb. W Morris started the Morris Motor Company C and in 1952 he bought the Austin M Motor Company. Peter and Jack decided to rally r the A30 all around England and France i their spare time as they we able to get in parts p and support from Jack's uncle easily. In I 1961 the two decided that the A30 would be b more competitive with a stronger engine and a better brakes so they spent their w weekends installing a 1298cc Austin engine

and Morris brakes front and rear. Jack and Peter then decided to try circuit racing at the Silverstone circuit. The A 30 was raced against Jaguar Mk2 Austin A35, Riley 1.5 at Silverstone, Brands Hatch, Castle Combe and Rockingham. In these races they were quiet competitive making a few podiums. Unfortunately with the years the competitor cars became more and more powerful with Mustangs and E-Types and Jack and Peter started to lose interest and family time started to take over. After some years in a garage Peter finally sold the car to Gunter Brachlow, a German MG collector in

1975. Gunter rallied it for some years again in timed German rallies before storing it in his workshop when he fell ill with cancer. After his recovery he decided to restore the car and stripped it completely to weld rusty parts. Unfortunately the cancer came back and Gunter died in 2011. My father who was a friend of his bought the stripped chassis from his wife and we put a lot of work into it to get it back together as it was, with an A-series engine and the MG brakes. harles and his son John Cooper operated a Vauxhall dealership after World War Two. They keenly recognised the need for cheap and simple racing cars, during a time when everything in England was still rather scarce, and motor racing was not seen as a direct necessity.

ideas very quickly, and by mid 1946 Cooper had constructed its first 500, based on Fiat Topolino suspensions and using a JAP engine for propulsion. In 1947 developments continued and by 1948 the Cooper Garage got his hands full meeting customer demand.

Charles Cooper had gained considerable experience in motor racing, first as a mechanic for Kaye Don (from the Avon Tyre company) but he had also opened a workshop in the little town of Surbiton, Southwest of London. Starting just after the Great War with refurbishing motor cycles, his business soon grew significantly and by 1934 he moved to what became the cradle of many interesting racing cars to come, the Cooper Garage on Hollyfield Road, still in Surbiton.

In 1949 a little foray was made into a larger car, by producing the Cooper Vauxhall, a small front engined car. Several additional units were made along the same lines, although mostly powered by MG engines.

Very soon after the War, some British enthusiasts decided that a new class of simple racing cars could start to satisfy the first demand for resuming motor sports. Based on motorcycle engines, with a capacity limited to 500 cc and readily available, a simple car could be made, with still a relatively favourable power to weight ratio. Cooper was not the first to enter the scene, but John picked up the

While the 500 class had become the international Formula 3 class in 1950, Cooper also ventured out in the larger F2 class, not by entering a purposely designed car, but by fitting the F3 cars with 1000-1100 cc JAP two cylinder engines, done first by some privateers. It was considered that in spite of giving up a significant of engine power, the mid-engined feather weight cars could still be competitive. The stressed 'twins' turned out to be quite unreliable. The nimble cars could keep up with most of the cars in the F2 field but nevertheless few successes were recorded. An 1100 cc Cooper MkIV did give Cooper its first Grand Prix outing, when Harry Schell put it on the grid of the 1950 Monaco GP. Unfortunately it

became involved in the mass turmoil during lap 2 when Giuseppe Farina spun his Alfa Romeo. For 1952 only very few teams and manufacturers committed to Formula 1 and the organisers of most Grands Prix decided to run their races for Formula 2 cars. Eventually the World Championship, with the exception of the American round at Indy, would be run under F2 regulations. The Coopers saw an opportunity and provided their customers with a new car to step up to the top level. Literally from scratch (drawings were made later) and in a very short period Cooper developed a single seater racer for the 1952 season. It used a box section chassis frame strengthened with bracing tubes, which was also used to carry the superstructure. The engine selected was the Bristol straight-six, based on the famous BMW 328 engine. This engine was taken by the British authorities as part of war damage reparation, and even BMW engineer Fritz Fiedler came to work in the UK to continue developing the engine. GT111 was one of four Roadsters built by FAV in 1965. By far the most famous of them all this car competed in the 1965 Targa Florio before crashing into a bridge and retiring with heavy damage to the front suspension.

The car travelled back to HQ where it sat for many years before being stripped for spare parts. The chassis has recently been restored in the UK by Gelscoe Motorsport Ltd and rebuilt into original spec.

Dulon Dino LD10B The Maxperenco Company was based in Didcot, Near Oxford in England (as was the Williams Grand Prix team). The company directors were Andrew Duncan and Bill Longley, their names making up the trading name â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dulon.â&#x20AC;? They made nearly 200 Dulon racing cars between 1967 and 1978, mostly Formula Fords and other single seaters, and the works team won most of the major championships in the early 1970s. In addition also to a Formula 5000 car,

a Formula Atlantic car and 2 very pretty sports coupes, Dulon produced a small number of sports racing cars for the international Group 6 formula in the 2 litre category for owners to fit their choice of engine. Such engines included units from Porsche, Cosworth and Ferrari. This car is fitted with a Ferrari V6 2 litre Dino engine and was sold to a customer in Germany. It went through several owners on mainland Europe in the 1970s and was entered in international races and events, being

This car can often be seen racing at various high profile races in Europe and is in fact the only example in the world today to be race ready and driven hard. Pedro Silva - Aisworth England particularly successful in hill-climbs. It was acquired by the current owner in 1996 and restored for historic racing. It has been campaigned with some class successes at the major meetings in Europe and the UK. The chassis is of steel construction with some aluminium panels and a GRP body. he Monzanapolis Lister Jaguar was built by Ecurie Ecosse to contest the 1958 "Race Of Two Worlds" on the banked oval track at Monza. Driven by Jack Fairman it competed against the Maserati "Eldorado Special" which was driven by Stirling Moss and all the American indycars which had been shipped over for the event.

it's Monza spec and raced it successfully in VSCC events in the 70s. After that it was sold to Ric Weiland in Germany from whom I bought it some 18 years later. I have now owned it for 14 years and fully restored it to it's 1958 Monza Spec.

who repatriated the car and raced it with great success in historic events. Among the subsequent owners were Murray Smith, Alain de Cadenet, Peter Livanos and Tony Smith. The latter sold the car to Belgian historic racer Hubert Fabri, campaigned the car through the 2000s and early 2010s. In 2014, it was acquired by the current,

The first prototype of the car (Mark I, later to be assigned type code T20) was rolled out already in January 1952. Initially a production run of just three cars was planned, until Mike Hawthorn's father placed and order for a fourth car. All four were completed for their first public outing, for the Goodwood Easter Meeting in 1952. Cooper Bristol was no match against the much more powerful Ferrari 500, but the cars did score some points in the world championship races.

Hawthorn went on to successfully campaign the car, not only in the UK, but also on the Continent. At the end of the season his exploits in the Formula 2 Cooper had earned him a Ferrari Works contract. Following the success at Goodwood, Cooper took orders for four more cars. The Walker Special (aka Walker Climax) was commissioned as a Grand Prix Car for the 1960 season by Rob Walker for Stirling Moss. After the 1958 season the Cooper Car Company were reluctant to sell Rob Walker spares for his team cars. Rob felt the only way to overcome the Cooper problem was to build his own car and in 1959, commissioned a design from Colotti, the Maserati chassis and transmission designer. During the 59/60 winter the car known as the “Walker Special” was built for Moss to drive in the 1960 World

1960 Walker Special Championship GPs. The car’s most obvious differentiating features is its quick change wire wheels, anticipating greater tyre wear. By the time the car was completed the new 1960 season was in full swing and Moss had been beaten by Innes Ireland in the new Lotus 18 a quantum leap in development and the sign of things to come. Chapman agreed to sell the Walker a Lotus which was duly modified and Moss won the 1960 Monaco GP in his first time racing the car. The Walker Special was subsequently completed, and tested by Jack Fairman,

but it never actually started a Grand Prix. The complete car stayed with Alf Francis, the cars constructor and Moss’s famous mechanic, until he died. In time and still in its original condition, it passed to Richard Parnell the current owner and the first person to race her.

Multi-talented engineer and amateur racer and car designer Simmons, who had already created one special, decided one of these lightweight, streamlined and strong aluminum tanks would make the perfect basis for his second project. Which he’d just talked young racing enthusiast Ray Dreossi into participating in. “I’d been putting up a fairly decent show in novice racing in my (Triumph) TR3,” recalls Dreossi. And Simmons, who was becoming less interested in driving himself, asked him if he’d like to drive his unique DKW-engined, aluminum-tube-framed special. Dreossi naturally jumped at the chance, although the car was approaching its best-before date in competition terms.Simmons then made him another offer he couldn’t refuse. He would design a revolutionary new car that Dreossi would finance and build with his guidance and assistance.

“It would be a sort of apprenticeship,” says Dreossi, who was then in his early 20s. His new mentor pointed out the project would require patience, as a build time-frame of or two or three years was anticipated. “But he said if I maintained the keenness to see it completed, the positive lessons learned would transfer to other aspects of my life,” says Dreossi, who’s now retired after a career as a machinist at General Motors and still friends with Simmons, who is now in a nursing home. Canadian racing has a long history of home-built “specials” created from oftenunlikely combinations of inspiration and componentry, but easily one of the most imaginative and exotic is the Dreossi - built from an F-86 Sabre Jet drop tank. Designed by Cecil Simmons and built by Ray Dreossi in the early 1960s, the tiny, shiny, aluminum-bodied racer will make its European debut at the Goodwood Revival historic racing meet in England in September with current owner and vintage racer Doug Elcomb at the wheel. Half a century ago, there was nothing vintage about this innovative little openwheel racer, designed to run in the Canadian Automobile Sport Clubs’ Canada Class, created in 1958 to foster the creation of affordable home-built machinery. Its jet-fighter link is courtesy of the Canadian Air Force which flew Canadair-produced versions of the North American Aviation F-86 jet fighter in the 1950s, that could be

CONNAUGHT ALSR/11 John Coombs/Stirling Moss/Les Leston/ Archie Scott Brown/Tony Brooks The Connaught A-type Long Chassis Sports Racer was developed in early 1954. With the advent of the 2.5 litre Grand Prix format for that season, the front-line career of Connaught’s marvellous A-type Grand Prix car was over as it was superseded by the B-type - the car which came to be known as the Syracuse after Tony Brooks’ win there in 1955. Although the A-type’s career as a monoposto had come to an end, the Send works had amassed a sizeable hoard of chassis and spares and Rodney Clarke and Mike Oliver set about developing an endurance sports racing car. With the design flair of Johnny Johnson, they developed the ALSR. The first car (ALSR/11) was bought and

campaigned by John Coombs whilst the second (ALSR/12) was retained by the works for Connaught’s patron, Kenneth McAlpine. ALSR was immediately successful in the 1954 season and this success continued on a change of ownership from John Coombs to Alan Brown. The year’s peak was reached in October 1954 when Stirling Moss took the car to first in class and tenth overall with a towering drive at the Coupes du Salon at Montlhery. The 1955 season continued to see success for ALSR 11, in the hands of Les Leston most weeks. The pinnacle of the car’s racing career was reached in August that year though as Archie Scott Brown and Les Leston took the car to first in class and sixth overall in the Goodwood Nine Hours, before Stirling Moss drove her to

first in class and seventh overall at the Oulton Park International TT Trophy race the following weekend. The car continued into competition in 1956 but was to feature only once, driven by Tony Brooks at Oulton Park at the British Empire Trophy race in April. The fatal accident of Bill Smith at 1955’s Tourist Trophy race at Dundrod saw the destruction of ALSR/12, and ALSR/11 became the unique, surviving car. In more recent times, the car has competed at numerous historic events in Europe, including those at Monaco Historic, Goodwood Revival, Silverstone Classic, Spa Six Hours and Le Mans Legends. The club has been so successful over the years that meetings held at the Grand Prix Circuit at Phillip Island in February/March, and at Sandown Park in November, now attract some of the most awe-inspiring cars from Australia, New Zealand, and the rest of the world. We regularly see cars from the UK, USA, Germany, Hong Kong etc. Ferrari, A/Romeo, BRM, Maserati, Cooper, Jaguar, HMW, Maybach, MG, Lago Talbot, plus many Australian specials.
