As we work together to achieve our common vision, I take this opportunity to thank you for your support. We continue the proud legacy of providing an excellent education to all who enroll at our institution, a legacy that has stood for 105 years, and one that will continue past 105 more. One of the cornerstones of our success is the contributions of outstanding alumni.

TSU, Apple Host National Coding Academy

By Lucas Johnson Tennessee State University has launched a national initiative that seeks to bring coding experiences to historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and underserved communities.

TSU hosted the inaugural HBCU C2 Presidential Academy July 14-19 through its newly established National Center for Smart Technology Innovations. HBCU C2 will bring coding and creativity opportunities to students across HBCU campuses and to a broad group of students across Nashville.

Apple CEO Tim Cook tweeted following the launch: “Anything is possible when people come together with a shared vision. Thank you to @TSUedu for your leadership and enthusiasm in bringing coding to your community and HBCUs nationwide!”

Leaders of 14 historically black colleges and universities – including Tennessee State – from across the country came away from the Academy with knowledge and skills in coding and app development from Apple’s comprehensive coding curriculum, which utilizes its popular Swift programming language.

“Tennessee State University is proud to host this great initiative as we give HBCU students and Nashville public schools access to this opportunity to expand their knowledge and gain important workforce development skills,” said TSU President, Dr. Glenda Glover. “Coding and app development are a growing part of the global workforce, and we want to help make sure people of color, especially our students, are equipped with the knowledge and skills to be competitive, and successful.”

The HBCUs that were part of the first cohort include: Arkansas Baptist College, BethuneCookman University, Dillard University, Fisk University, Fort Valley State University, Lincoln University-Missouri, Morehouse College, Norfolk State University, Prairie View A&M University, Southern University Shreveport Louisiana, Texas Southern University, Wilberforce University and Xavier University of Louisiana.

Participants at the Academy included HBCU presidents, faculty members, IT staff and STEM students interested in becoming app developers.

TSU is also working with Apple, Metro Nashville Public Schools, Motlow State Community College and the Metropolitan Nashville Chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., to expand coding opportunities to other students in the community.

“We want students of all ages and background to have the opportunity to pursue coding and creativity,” said Dr. Robbie Melton, TSU’s Interim Dean of Graduate and Professional Studies, and the initiative’s main facilitator. “That’s why TSU is working side-by-side with Metro Nashville Public Schools to empower students from Pre-K through workforce and align curricula to make it even easier for students to learn to code and get credit for that effort.”

Dr. Douglas Renfro is executive director of learning technology and library services at MNPS. He said coding provides “opportunities for students that they had not seen before.”

“We’re also showing students you don’t have to necessarily have a fouryear degree to get started in life,” said Renfro. “This can become a way that you can boost yourself up, find your interest, and then maybe go get your four-year degree, or your two-year degree.” continued on page 38

Campus booming with new construction, including Health Sciences Building

By Lucas Johnson Tennessee State University’s campus landscape is changing with the construction of several new buildings.

TSU President Glenda Glover says the structures will enhance students’ living and improve their learning environment.

“The new projects are part of a long-term plan to improve academic programs and increase our residence hall inventory, while enhancing the overall status of the university,” says Dr. Glover.

“We are extremely excited about the future and the new look our campus will take on with the construction. It’s been a long time coming for our students, faculty, staff and alumni.”

Currently under construction is a new Health Sciences Building. The company responsible for building the facility has installed a camera that allows alumni and constituents to monitor the 18to 24-month project.

TSU National Alumni Association President Joni McReynolds says providing a link for alums to monitor the construction is a wonderful idea.

Also on slate for construction are two new residence halls, a food science building, Gateway Arch Entrance, and an Alumni House and Welcome Center.

“I would encourage all alumni to look at the link and see how progress is being made, and I will do my best to send it around to my executive board, and to all alums we have the ability to contact,” says McReynolds.

“I think it’s a great initiative,” says Beard. “I am excited about it. It’s going to bring in new students, and it’s going to create new opportunities.”

“President Glover and her leadership have been working very hard with the various constituents to enhance TSU,” says Johnson. “We’re excited about all the things that we’re going to bring for the students, the faculty, and the alumni.”

Smith Secures Over $7 Million In First Year As Center Director

Dr. Kimberly Smith secured more than $7 million in grant funding during her first year as director of the Center of Excellence for Learning.

The Tennessee Early Childhood Training Alliance (TECTA), a statewide professional development system that provides assistance for employees at licensed child care facilities, is funded by the center through a contract with the Tennessee Department of Human Services.

“TECTA provides training for those in the early childhood field. Also, once they complete the 30-hour training, each participant is available to receive academic support up to a doctorial degree,” Smith said.

“We pay a portion of tuition, as well as books for academic support or credentials.”

Smith said trainees can be employees who work in family child care, at a child care center or a school age program. She said funding for the program, which has eight sites across the state, allows her to hire 15 new employees.

John Barfield, director of engagement and visibility in the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, said much of Smith’s success can be attributed to her leadership, as well as the research and grant writing focus of her management team, which is housed on campus.

“She has built a team in the short amount of time that she has been over the center that is fully staffed. They have been able to grow the amount of funding for the center in an unprecedented fashion,” Barfield said.

TSU was recently designated as a Carnegie R2 research institution, one of only 139 in the nation, and one of only 11 among all historically black colleges and universities.

College of Engineering Receives $1M Award For Scholarships

The College of Engineering is using a one million dollar grant from the National Science Foundation to recruit and retain graduate students.

Dr. Frances Williams, the project’s Principal Investigator (PI) who was recently appointed associate vice president for Research and Sponsored programs, said the “measures are crucial in providing for recruitment, retention, and graduation of graduate students.“ “This is imperative as the United States is faced with a human resource challenge in its need to produce more domestic scientific and engineering talent with advanced competencies,” she said.

The award, “Scholarships To Attract and Retain Students (STARS) in

Graduate Engineering and Computer Science Programs,” will provide 30 scholarships to students who are pursuing master’s degrees in engineering or computer science over five years.

As part of the college’s strategic plan, the goal is to increase graduate enrollment by at least 25 percent in areas of research.

In addition to financial support, the program will include cohort-building activities, graduate student support services, seminars, summer internships, and mentorship.

Dr. S. Keith Hargrove, dean of the College of Engineering, said the scholarship program will support the college’s effort to recruit and grow the graduate programs in engineering and computer science. He said applicants will be evaluated on their grade point average (at least 3.4), research interest, and discipline.

Big Blue Claims Home Depot’s Retool Your School Top Honor Tennessee State University took home “Campaign of the Year” honors in Home Depot’s Retool Your School - HBCU Campus Improvement competition.

This was the first year for the award, which was created to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Retool Your School program. TSU beat out 60 other institutions for the grant award.

Curtis Johnson, chief of staff and associate vice president for administration, said the Retool Your School Award will be used to enhance the school’s exterior lighting in areas students frequent.

“Outside of the project, Retool Your School, we have earmarked $275,000 for exterior lighting. We want to make sure

just as proud of our students, staff and alumni that mobilized efforts for TSU to have such a strong showing to get the entire university family involved,” said Tennessee State University President, Dr. Glenda Glover.

TSU finished second in voting for the large institution category, but walked away with the campaign of the year award. Judges cited the overall performance of the campaign that was able to engage students, alumni and the community, as well as digital media strategies to promote voting.

TSU has participated in the Home Depot program since 2014. Kelli Sharpe, assistant vice president for Public Relations and Communications, said getting the word out early and often was crucial.

“Staff put together a comprehensive social media campaign and worked to make sure students, employees, alumni and the TSU community as a whole were included on all communications regarding our campaign,” Sharpe said. “It was truly a team effort to see

that persons on the campus at night are moving about safely,” Two locations specifically targeted for lighting in the Retool Your School proposal include the TSU Amphitheater and the Floyd Payne Campus Center.

Home Depot will have the final approval of the projects, which will start in the fall.

Johnson said better lighting on campus will also benefit alumni when they visit TSU.

Watkins Commitment To Students Continues with New Institute

Tennessee State University continues to honor the life and legacy of world-renowned medical luminary, Dr. Levi Watkins, Jr., with an institute named in his honor.

Watkins, a 1966 alumnus of TSU and the first African - American to be accepted into and graduate from the Vanderbilt School of Medicine, revolutionized the medical world with the creation and implantation of the Automatic Implantable Defibrillator (AID), which detects irregular heart rhythms and shocks the heart back to life.

The Dr. Levi Watkins, Jr. Institute, which was established in 2018, has four components, the Dr. Levi Watkins, Jr. Society, the Dr. Levi Watkins, Jr. Pre-med Society, the Dr. Levi Watkins, Jr. Lecture Series, and the Dr. Levi Watkins, Jr. Endowed Scholarship.

The Society is a student organization for STEM majors who are high academic achievers and Presidential Scholars. The Pre-Med Society is for students who are high achievers interested in attending medical school. Both organizations include periodic seminars, service as research assistants, a living learning community on campus, and training for personal health and wellness.

At the inaugural Dr. Levi Watkins, Jr., Homecoming Lecture in October of 2018, TSU President Glenda Glover thanked the Watkins family for donating $500,000 to fund the institute, and shared her enthusiasm about the initiative.

“We established this institute to assist students who aspire to attend medical school. We established this institute for students to join the pre-med society. We established this institute to provide leaders from around the world,” she said. “We established this institute to provide scholarships for students for their education here at TSU.“ Dr. George C. Hill, who formerly served as head of the Levi

Watkins, Jr., M.D. Professor in Medical Education Chair at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, shared an inspiring message at the inaugural lecture.

TSU Assistant Dean of Students Erica Gilmore said preserving Watkins legacy with the institute is important because of his work recruiting students to pursue careers in STEM fields.

“He was involved in STEM and the promotion of STEM before it was really cool,” said Gilmore, who graduated from TSU in 2007 and has served as a member of the Metro Nashville Council for 12 years.

Watkins enrolled at Tennessee State in 1962, majoring in biology and graduating with honors. He was also elected student body president at TSU. In 1966, following graduation, he attended Vanderbilt’s School of Medicine. Watkins went onto become the first black chief resident in cardiac surgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospital after medical school.

Watkins fought for equal opportunities in education throughout his career, increasing minority enrollment at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine by 400 percent in four years.

Barbara Murrell, a 1960 alumna of TSU, was the director of Student Activities in 1965 when Watkins served as president of the student government association.

“Levi started his preparation for his journey here at Tennessee State University in the ‘Land of Golden Sunshine by the Cumberland fertile shore,’” she said. “To us he was Levi. To the world he became a renowned cardiac surgeon, a gamechanger, an unrelenting advocate for the disenfranchised, a drum major for justice and a history maker.”

University marks historic milestone with inaugural Executive MBA Program graduates Tennessee State University added another page to the institution’s historical achievements when its first Executive MBA class walked the stage at the 2018 fall commencement ceremony.

The significance of the 22-member group’s achievement was highlighted when TSU President Glenda Glover acknowledged the class and asked them to stand.

“It was extremely exciting and gratifying to see the first cohorts of the TSU executive MBA culminate this historic journey by participating in fall commencement,” said Dr. Glover. “TSU is Nashville’s only four-year public institution and it just made sense that we have a business program tailored for the corporate community, the working professional. Our executive MBA has national and global appeal, as evident from some of the students that were from as far away as Colorado, and also internationally, representing Italy.”

The 12-month program, which started last fall, was delivered in a hybrid format consisting of both inperson and online course offerings.

Business professors and seasoned professionals with industry and business background, such as current and former company executives, taught the program. Among them was President Glover, a certified public accountant with a high level of experience in the corporate world.

Program participants also had the opportunity to spend 10 days studying outside the United States to broaden their understanding of global leadership. The inaugural class went to Japan. A second class, which is scheduled to graduate in December, went to Japan and South Korea.

David Pelton, a member of the inaugural class, has been in the business world as an independent consultant in marketing and government relations for more than 20 years. However, he needed a brush-up in accounting and how to deal with personalities in the workplace. He said the TSU MBA program was just what he needed.

“This program helped me gain knowledge and develop better skills and understanding of things I thought I knew in serving my clients,” said Pelton.

“I travel quite a lot in my business and the program design worked perfectly to do class work, as well as serve clients.”

Dr. Millicent Lownes-Jackson, dean of the College of Business, said the goal of the EMBA program was to offer an affordable, convenient, accredited, business curriculum for busy business professionals.

“In one short year, EMBA program participants have acquired critical business knowledge, along with readily applicable global business and leadership strategies that will enable them to make an immediate and profound impact.”

Anis Mnif, director of graduate programs in the College of Business, agreed.

“The Executive MBA provided participants a strong foundation for a thriving career,” Mnif said “It combined cutting-edge research results and theory provided by our renowned faculty and real-life practical examples made available through the rich executive-level experiences of the program’s Executives in Residence.”

TSU celebrates former football players

By Lucas Johnson Tennessee State University celebrated its rich football history with a special tribute to TSU players who competed in the pros, including 21 in Super Bowls.

“Salute to Greatness-Excellence on the Gridiron” took place at the Renaissance Nashville Hotel on April 12. The event lead up to the NFL Draft in Nashville, and was part of TSU’s annual Coming Home-Legends Weekend, which featured the Blue and White Game.

“Our history of sending students to play on the professional level of football is special,” said TSU Athletics Director Teresa Phillips. “Those who competed on the highest level were and are great representatives of the university and should be recognized.”

Over the years, more than 150 TSU players went on to compete in the National Football League, Canadian Football League, and other professional leagues.

Those players who attended the event include Pro Football Hall of Famer Richard Dent, MVP of Super Bowl XX with the Chicago Bears; Ed “Too Tall” Jones, who appeared in three Super Bowls as a member of the Dallas Cowboys; and twotime Pro Bowler Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who played in Super Bowl XLVIII with the Denver Broncos.

“When I first learned of the event, I was very excited,” said Jones. “Tennessee State has always had a rich athletics program, even before I got here.”

James Shaw Jr. uses ‘Waffle House Hero’ notoriety to champion social causes

By Emmanuel S. Freeman Like many people, James Shaw Jr. ran into a Waffle House on April 22, 2018 to get a quick bite.

But what happened next on that morning changed his life and thrust the humble gentleman into the national spotlight.

“I am not a hero,” Shaw told reporters after wrestling an assault rifle from a gunman at the restaurant in the Antioch neighborhood of Nashville, Tennessee.

“I want people to know that I did that completely out of a selfish act. I was completely doing it just to save myself.

Me doing that, I did save other people, but I don’t want people to think I was the terminator or superman or anything like that.”

Four people died in the incident, and police and law enforcement officials believe many more would have been killed or injured if not for Shaw’s intervention.

Regardless of what he thinks about his actions, what Shaw did, brought him notoriety he never imagined. From Hollywood to the White House, Shaw has earned himself a place and a name in history as the “Waffle House Hero.”

TSU President Glenda Glover hosted a special event to honor Shaw, which included a scholarship in his name and a Special Presidential Recognition. TSU’s Farrell-Westbrook Building was filled to capacity as the Nashville community, state and local elected officials, as well as TSU students, faculty and staff joined the university for the special event.

“The TSU family is extremely proud of alumnus James Shaw Jr. for his bravery and courage,” Glover said before the ceremony. “James epitomizes the core values and mission of our institution, which is think, work and serve. His genuine concern for the well-being of others is a tribute to his parents, who are also TSU alumni.”

And then came the endless list of activities, events, special appearances, recognitions and appreciations from across the nation for Shaw.

The Tennessean editorial board named him one of its 2018 People of the Year. He appeared on the “Ellen” show, received the Courage Award from the US Justice Department, was honored at the NBA All-Star game, named Special Presidential Honoree at the 2018 TSU Homecoming, honored at the Nashville Christmas Parade, named BET Humanitarian Hero, and received “Best Hero” MTV award from Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman. In June, Shaw was also honored with a joyride in a Blue Angels jet.

In all, Shaw has remained humble, using his newly gained fame to help the needy, champion social causes, and put light on some of the things he sees as ills in society, such as illegal possession of firearms and gun violence. He invited Waffle House shooting victims’ relatives to TSU and presented them with more than $240,000 he had received from a GoFundMe campaign he launched after the shooting.

“Had you not been there, everybody in that building would have been killed,” said Renee Hampton, the aunt of 24-year-old Sharita Henderson, who was wounded in the shooting. “I just want to say thank you.”

Shaw also chose TSU to launch the James Shaw Jr. Foundation and a new charity. Called “Come Together Day,” the event kicked off at Hale Stadium with vendors and activities for kids before moving into Kean Hall, where there was a celebrity basketball game that included TSU alum and then Philadelphia 76ers star Robert Covington.

Shaw said the mission of The James Shaw Jr. Foundation is to work with other like-minded organizations and community advocates to eradicate violence and address mental health issues, as well as provide support, tools and resources for individuals and families who have experienced severe violence and trauma.

“It’s about accountability and caring for one another,” he said.

Jazmin Ghent Continues to Soar With NAACP Image Award

By Michael McLendon Deborah Ghent says when she and her husband Carl went on their first date, they hit it off so well that they discussed naming their first child Jazmin to honor their mutual love for jazz music.

The couple had no idea they would have twins, but their decision to name their daughter Jazmin seems almost prophetic considering the recent success and recognition she has garnered as a smooth jazz artist.

Jazmin Ghent, who received an NAACP Image Award earlier this year in the Outstanding Smooth Jazz Album category for “The Story of Jaz,” said winning the award came as a complete surprise.

“I was playing on a jazz cruise with the amazing jazz musician Dave Koz,” recalled Ghent, “And that’s when I found out, and I am beyond thankful, blessed and humbled to have won.”

Jazmin, also named Best New Artist of 2017 by the Smooth Jazz Network, earned a master’s degree in music from Tennessee State University in 2014 after securing a bachelor’s degree in Music Education/ Jazz Studies from Florida State University.

“If I didn’t have music, I know I wouldn’t be where I am today,” she said. “Music distracted me from getting off track and being something I’m not. It really allowed me to express myself and find my way in life.”

Currently an elementary school music teacher on weekdays and a traveling smooth jazz phenom on weekends, Jazmin speaks fondly of her time at TSU. She said Dr. Robert Elliot, head of the Department of Music at TSU, her residence life coworkers Gregory Williams and Brent Dukhie, and various members of the TSU family, provided direction and support during her time at the university.

Elliot, who served as chair of Ghent’s thesis committee, said that as a musician, Jazmin brings the “total package.”

“She is very much a modern saxophonist, but she is well-grounded in the music of those greats who came before her, and she has built upon that legacy,” he said.

A great deal of Jazmin’s love for education comes from her mother Deborah, who worked as a special education teacher for 38 years. According to Deborah, Jazmin honed a lot of her leadership skills and musicianship in church.

“At the age of 8, she started playing in church, and she and her twin sister alternated weeks and they became the church Sunday school pianists,” Deborah said. When she was older and the church pianist was out, she would take over. “ continued on page 38

Christion Abercrombie A Walking Miracle

by Michael McLendon Christion Abercrombie is a walking miracle. For almost a year in corridors throughout Big Blue Nation, his name has become synonymous with grit, perseverance, and determination.

After collapsing from a life-threatening injury on the sidelines during the Tennessee State-Vanderbilt game on Sept. 29, 2018, paramedics rushed the 20-year-old linebacker to Vanderbilt University Medical Center Hospital for emergency surgery.

Doctors reported that Christion suffered numerous strokes, along with a severe brain injury, and by that Monday morning, TSU Head Football Coach Rod Reed reported to media that Christion remained in “very critical condition.”

News of the unfortunate incident spread throughout the nation, as his family, and TSU officials — including TSU President Glenda Glover, Athletics Director Teresa Phillips, and Coach Reed — sat at his hospital bedside.

Amidst the uncertainty of Christion’s condition, TSU students, faculty and staff held a prayer vigil in the TSU Courtyard on Tuesday, Oct. 2. Dr. Glover asked for continued prayer for Christion and his family.

“We want the entire family to know that we’re standing with them,” she said.

“Christion is a fighter. We will continue to support him and his family.”

On Oct. 3, Christion’s mother, Staci Abercrombie, updated the media on her son’s condition at a press conference held at VUMC. She encouraged friends, family and concerned viewers with her words of faith.

“We’re expecting a miracle,” said Staci

Abercrombie, who appeared on ‘The Today Show’ the next morning. “Each day is a battle. But he’s a strong young man. He’s fighting.

We just have to continue to pray.”

On Oct. 17, VUMC discharged Christion, who was transported to the Sheperd Center,

one of the nation’s top 10 rehabiliation hospitals for brain injuries, located in Atlanta.

President Glover paid special tribute to Christion at the TSU Homecoming game on Oct. 20, with family members, including Abercrombie’s aunt, Shawn Neason, and uncle Kevin Richardson – sporting the player’s No. 6 jersey – joining her for the coin toss.

Not too long afterward, reports emerged of Christion speaking, taking small steps and sharing with his parents his goal to once again suit up and play football as a TSU Tiger.

As Christion’s mobility increased, it became apparent that his love for football remained.

He went home briefly on Dec. 16 to watch NFL games with his family, and a few days later attended a special day in his honor at Westlake High, his alma mater. He also reportedly attended church, and by January 8, had returned home to live with his parents at their residence in Atlanta.

In late January, Staci, calling Christion’s progress a “miracle,” said he planned to return to TSU to complete his degree in sports management, but she did not say exactly when. Christion returned to TSU in February to visit his teammates and coaches, and on April 13 made a special appearance at the TSU Big Blue 5k Run, where he fired the starting gun and took photographs with winners.

“We are very grateful for each and every one of you,” Staci said. “Because of God and your

prayers, our son is here today. He is a miracle.

This is a journey, and it’s not over. But we’re very grateful to God for what He’s already done, and for what He is going to continue to do.”

In late April, while millions of viewers watched him on television and over the internet, Christion announced the fifth-round draft pick of the Tennessee Titans during the NFL Draft, calling his friend’s name -- Georgia LB D’Andre Walker.

During an interview with WSB-TV in Atlanta, Christion offered these words of advice to injured athletes across the globe fighting to recover: “Believe in God, because without Him nothing is possible. He made everything happen for me.”

In October during this year’s homecoming festivities, Christion will be honored as the Special Presidential Grand Marshal.

By Michael McLendon With a vision of fusing pizza, hip hop and art, Clinton Gray III, Derrick Moore and Emmanuel “E.J.” Reed, have created a thriving restaurant business that has expanded from 911 Buchanan St. in North Nashville to locations in Antioch, Tennessee, and Atlanta.

The three 2007 graduates took their vision, passion and the almost $3,000 they had between them, and paid a visit to the Nashville Business Incubation Center at the TSU Center for Entrepreneurship and Economic Development.

Within seven years, they had built a multimilliondollar moving company that set the stage for their most popular venture to date, Slim & Husky’s Local Pizza Beeria.

The fast-growing pizza chain recently served up slices of their “Got 5 On It” pizza to “Good Morning America” hosts Michael Strahan and Robin Roberts as part of National Cheese Pizza Day and walked away with the top honor of having the best cheese pizza.

Gray said part of Slim & Husky’s uniqueness stems not only from its food, but its engaging atmosphere.

“We just want to bring everybody together over some good pizza,” he said.

The location in North Nashville is a hotspot for neighborhood residents and area business people, as well as a preferred hangout and place of employment for students.

“Our experience with hiring Tennessee State University students specifically has been excellent,” Reed said.

Some of their signature pizzas at Slim & Husky’s include the RONY, RONI, RONE!, the CALIFORNIA LOVE and the NOTHING BUT A “V” THANG, which comes with veggies only and vegan cheese. In fact, the restaurant’s cinnamon rolls were such a hot item, that they led to the opening of a new spin-off business across the street at 1006 Buchanan St., called The Roll Out. “What we found was that there was so much demand for the cinnamon roll that people were coming in and ordering four pizzas and four cinnamon rolls, and it got so busy in the kitchen

that we couldn’t work at the speed level we wanted,” said Gray. The Roll Out provides space to sell their popular cinnamon rolls, as well as focus on their carry-out and catering services for corporations and large events. Slim & Husky’s also has its own lifestyle brand and clothing boutique located within The Roll Out. As Slim & Husky’s continues to grow, the trio has extended it’s staff to include CEO Betty Marshall who, according to their website, has more than 25 years in the hospitality industry. The owners have also increased their efforts to promote education by continuing to provide jobs for area youth, as well as scholarships to students who “excel through academics, athletics and community service.”

“It’s just something we want to do, because to us, we just don’t want to be one of those companies that come into the community and don’t contribute,” Moore said.

All three of the rising entrepreneurs credit TSU with giving them vision and direction.

“The professors, the coaches and just the whole staff made it a family environment, and that’s helped us continue to be a family and become good businessmen.”

Traci Otey Blunt Reaches New Heights As NFL Exec

Traci Otey Blunt loves football. For four years, she marched across the field in Hale Stadium at every Tennessee State University football game as a proud member of the Aristocrat of Bands. In April, she returned to Nashville as senior vice president of corporate communications for the National Football League, a position she describes as her “dream job.”

“In this role, I am the day-to day communications executive who leads everything but football communications on the field,” she said. “I have four verticals under my portfolio,— I oversee rapid response, public affairs, player health and safety, business operations, and work closely with the social responsibility and community relations team and football communications team.”

Traci, who majored in criminal justice at TSU, said in her twenties she planned to become a police officer with the dream of eventually becoming an FBI agent. All of that changed after a conversation with her father following a career fair at the university.

“As a criminal justice major, I was required to fulfill a 40-hour a week internship (or senior practicum as it was called back then). The only internship available through the criminal justice curriculum was at the prison. My dad said, ‘You’re not going to work at the prison.’ And I said, ‘I’m trying to be a cop, of course I’m going to work at the prison.’ And he, was very clear. ‘No. You’re not going to work at the prison.’”

That day changed the trajectory of Traci’s career, as she would go on to do a legislative internship at the Tennessee State Legislature, which led to a succession of political opportunities and promotions, until years later she was recruited to serve as a deputy communications director and director of African American media for Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign.

“Lorraine Voles, who was formerly Vice President Al Gore’s press secretary, informed me that then-Senator Hillary Clinton was staffing up for her 2008 Presidential Campaign,” Traci said. “ ‘She said, ‘We know you do more than black media, but they are hiring an AfricanAmerican media director, so I recommended you for the position.’”

Traci’s strong work ethic eventually led to a career working with African American media mogul and founder of Black Entertainment Television, Bob Johnson.

“My first six years with Bob were a turning point –I started his corporate communication and public affairs division at The RLJ Companies and had the opportunity to work across the 16 business entities he had under the RLJ portfolio,” she said.

“At that time, Bob was the first African American to be a majority owner of an NBA team, the Charlotte Bobcats.”

Johnson appointed Traci executive vice president for Corporate Marketing and Corporate Affairs at RLJ Entertainment, as well as tapped her to launch the first African American streaming service -- Urban Movie Channel (UMC.tv). Traci, in 2017, was

promoted to President of UMC, “taking her out of her comfort zone” prepared her for her current role with the NFL. “I could do the corporate communications, public relations and public affairs in my sleep,” she said.

“What Bob did was put me in a working environment where I had to learn how to run a business, and if you think about it, it was a start-up.”

“At the end of the day, if I didn’t have the opportunity to be in the role I was in at RLJ Entertainment/UMC, I wouldn’t be prepared for the position I have today.”

Traci’s leadership skills and ability to stay cool under pressure are qualities her former TSU Band Director, Edward Graves, said she possessed as a student at TSU. “Traci was a fine student, very dedicated to the band and to everything she did,” Graves said.

“She was an excellent musician, a great leader, and just a very fine young lady. I’m not surprised at whatever she might decide to do or get chosen to do. She is very professional.”

Grant Winrow, special assistant to TSU President Glenda Glover, served as a drum major when Otey Blunt performed as a flutist with the Aristocrat of Bands. He said Traci did a great job balancing the demands of being a student and a member of AOB. “Traci excelled throughout her matriculation at TSU by being a great student and flute player in the Aristocrat of Bands, as well as being a runner-up candidate in the Miss TSU pageant,” Winrow said.

Traci credits her husband, and their 6-year-old daughter, with being her anchor.

“My husband is so supportive. I couldn’t do what I do now if it weren’t for him,” she said.

Some of Traci’s fondest memories of Tennessee State involve the Aristocrat of Bands.

“What I loved most about being in the band was the commitment, camaraderie, and sense of family the band brought. If the football team was scheduled to play FAMU, Jackson State, or Southern, we’d finish band practice around 10:00 p.m., and after Prof. Kirk and Prof. Graves left, we’d be right back out there in the hole practicing at 1:00 a.m.,” she said. “While Prof. Graves and Prof. Kirk weren’t there, the drum majors – Grant, Quanda, Joe, Rod (depending on which year) – were there, and the band members were there in full force doing what we needed to do to ensure that our halftime show was all that!”

Those memories have remained with Traci, and when she returned to Nashville in April to attend and work during the NFL Draft, she made sure TSU and the Aristocrat of Bands were front and center.

“I told my colleagues (and anyone who was listening), that the Aristocrat of Bands would represent on the red carpet! What everyone experienced was just a taste of the band – only about 20-to-25 members were on the red carpet.

Imagine if the entire band was here. Imagine!’” she said.

Quad Webb Serves Up The Perfect Recipe For Success As TV Host, Entrepreneur and Author

By Kelli Sharpe and Michael McLendon Putting a multifaceted high-energy self-proclaimed “daddy’s girl” like Quad Webb in a box would be impossible.

The TSU alumna, fondly referred to as Miss Quad, was simply the beautiful reality TV star featured on Bravo’s hit reality show Married To Medicine.

Today, the best-selling author and entrepreneur, says working as a talk show host beside three talented African American women gives her the opportunity to bond with sisters and give her fans a holistic view of her vibrant personality.

“The catty part of reality TV, I don’t like, and sometimes it’s even a turn off for me, and I’m in it,” she said. “But again, God has allowed me to use that platform to be able to advance myself onto another platform like Sister Circle where it’s definitely a very positive environment, and I am very pleased and blessed to have that opportunity because people are now able to see me in my totality.”

Sister Circle, which airs weekdays on TV One at 12 Noon EST, features the Memphis-native along with Grammy-nominated singer Syleena Johnson, TV and radio host Rashan Ali and singer, actress and reality TV personality Trina Braxton.

“We help each other through hardships. I recently just went through a divorce, and there were times when I would come into the makeup room and my sisters would just pray over me, and that was huge,” she added.

A 2005 graduate of TSU, Quad majored in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. She says her fondest memories at TSU involve homecoming.

“Homecoming was just always amazing. To see the homecoming court. I actually participated in a couple of those, and a couple of my friends ran during the time that I was there,” she said.

“Just the pride that the alumni have in the school. To come back to the school, to walk the ground, to hear people tell stories about how TSU was when they came up, and how TSU had helped to change their lives. Everything surrounding it. The football game. It was just great. It’s magnetic, even to this day.”

Although she had a great time at TSU, she says students should remember to focus on the purpose of being in school.

“Definitely enjoy the moment, but always remember, focus over fun. It’s great to have a good time, but there’s nothing like carving out what you want to be and who you want to be, what you see for yourself and your life, and remaining focused on that,” she said.

Quad says a lot of her success can be credited to growing up in a home filled with love from her parents, especially her father. The only girl in the family, she says having a loving father with a vision for her life made all the difference.

“I remember him talking with me all the time about the importance of being smart and rolling up my sleeves to work hard. Often times these talks would include a car ride. He would say, ‘Just get up and throw your coat on real quick.’ And we would drive in the car and go to some of the most expensive areas that Memphis had at the time,” she said. “And he would tell me, ‘You too can have this.

behind those doors, but you have to be willing to do the work when necessary and make sacrifices.’”

Those talks didn’t fall on deaf ears. In addition to owning a pet clothing line called Picture Perfect Pup, Quad recently released her new book, Cooking with Miss Quad: Live, Laugh, Love and Eat, which is ranked #7 on the Amazon Best Sellers list in the Soul Food Cooking category. She says her goal is to continue to expand her brand.

“I want to be a household name and that’s why you see me venturing off into a multitude of different things, not only for the streams of income, but I feel if I get into other avenues of entertainment, then my reach is a lot further and my impact will be a lot stronger” Quad says she wants to use her influence to help others.

“I am a very positive person, a very resourceful person. I want to see my people win. I want to see my people celebrated, and if I can do anything to aid and assist, it is done,” she said. “I’m very happy that I attended an HBCU, and I am most certainly happy that that HBCU was Tennessee State University.

Vintagers still a mainstay of financial support Classes of ’39, ’44, ’49, ’54, ’59, ’64, ’69, ’74, ‘79 present $300,000 at Spring Commencement

By Emmanuel S. Freeman Mary Carver Patrick believes that with a strong commitment and dedication from fellow alumni to support their alma mater, no capable student seeking an education at Tennessee State University should be turned away for financial reasons.

“Some of us are in our 70s now, but all of us didn’t make it through Tennessee State on our own; somebody helped us along the way to get to where we are,” says Patrick, a 1969 graduate of TSU. “Just like people helped us, we too should reach back and help somebody else.”

Patrick, a retired educator, is a member of the Tennessee State University Vintagers Club, which continues to make a strong presence at the institution. The members of this exclusive group are former students who graduated from the institution at least 40 years or more ago.

They return to their alma mater each spring, get reacquainted, hold different functions, and on graduation day, those members who graduated 50 years ago, don matching gold caps and gowns, and join the commencement ceremony to relive their graduation from the institution.

Call it a class reunion, but Patrick and her fellow Vintagers are more than about just rekindling

fond memories. They come bearing gifts for their beloved institution – money and endowments for scholarships and long-term sustainability. And that spring 2019 commencement was no exception.

About 170 showed up representing the Classes of 1939, 1944, 1949, 1954, 1959, 1964, 1969, 1974, and 1979. One-hundred-year-old Mary (Gentry) Dameron was in the group as the sole representative of her Class of 1939, to celebrate her 80th year of graduation. But before donning their gold caps and gowns to walk on stage for a special recognition from President Glenda Glover, the Vintagers presented a combined $300,181 to the university Foundation to help keep needy students in school.

Of that amount, Patrick’s Class of 1969 fulfilled a $100,000 endowment commitment. About 70 members of the class returned for their 50th anniversary celebration. At their 45th anniversary in 2014, after pondering ideas on how to give back in a way that would have lasting impact, the group settled on creating an endowment. They made a commitment to fulfill the $100,000 obligation in five years – on their 50th anniversary celebration. They realized it would take work to mobilize members, and raise the funds in time.

Patrick, as the lead class agent, along with four others - Mary Seagrave Boyd, Dr. Judith Presley, Col. Kenneth Dollar (Ret.) and Wanda Brown – sprang into action.

“Mary Carver really energizes the team,” says Boyd. “She has been a very strong and passionate alum who understands our objective. We believe in the importance of continuing the legacy of HBCUs, and to do so there has to be funding for the students.”

Just to be clear, the endowment is in addition to regular individual and group contributions to the university each year. The endowment was also intended to coincide with the celebration of the Class of 1969 as the Vintagers Club’s Golden Year Anniversary Class.

Cassandra Griggs, director of Alumni Affairs and Annual Giving, describes members of the Class of 1969 as “feisty and bold.” That spirit, she says, was a big help in getting them to reach their goal.

“They had a dynamic group of class agents headed

by Mary Carver Patrick,” says Griggs. “They worked very hard to fulfill their commitment from five years ago.”

Patrick says it took commitment, dedication and communication to fulfill their goal. “We did it because we saw the benefit in it. We set benchmarks to check each year, maintained continued communications, we were vigilant with the Foundation to know that we were on target.

We were committed and by having a goal and being committed, as well as communicating regularly, made all of this happen. We all made a commitment by giving at least $5,000 a piece over the five-year period. I had to make sure that everybody was following that goal,” says Patrick.

She says with the cost of education getting higher each year, TSU graduates and former students can make the difference.

“When I came here the teachers that I had were just an extension of my home,” adds Patrick. “They are not here anymore, but they gave so much to this university in terms of what they did for us.

So, we just want to leave a legacy, and we want to inspire every class that followed us, and those ahead of us, to do as much as they can to do better than us.”

Amos and Brenda Otis pave the way for others to succeed through giving

By Lucas Johnson Growing up on the mean streets of Detroit, Amos Otis’ future looked bleak. But then he was directed to the “land of golden sunshine,” and the now multimillion-dollar entrepreneur realized his potential.

“My dreams started to materialize,” recalls Amos.

“Tennessee State University set me on this course, and I will forever be indebted to them.”

He meant it. Over the years, Amos and his wife, Brenda, have given generously to the university.

Their biggest contribution so far came in 2018 when the couple gave $1 million for the construction of an Alumni Welcome Center.

“It is a privilege and a pleasure to be able to do something for the university that pulled me out of the streets of Detroit and gave me an education and an opportunity to be a productive citizen,” said Amos at a groundbreaking for the center during Homecoming 2018.

Amos came to thenTennessee A&I in 1959. He says it was an uncle, Jack Feagins, an Army officer and Tennessee State alum, who had the greatest influence on him attending the university.

Amos says he was running with the wrong crowd, getting into trouble, and his uncle feared the worst.

“He said, ‘Boy, I’m going to take you and put you in school before you kill yourself,’ recalls Amos. “He drove me to Tennessee State.”

Through his uncle’s relationship with the director of security at the university, Mr. Eddie Williams, Amos was enrolled. He says those who helped nurture him, and provided tough love, included Dean Robert N. Murrell and Engineering Professor Yvonne Young “Y.Y.” Clark. It was Clark’s brutal

honesty that led him to change his major from electrical engineering to industrial arts.

“You got to find something else to do,” Amos recalls Clark telling him when he wasn’t doing too well in her trigonometry class.

He’s glad he listened. Amos, also called “Sco or Scoman,” a nickname given to him as a child, joined TSU’s Advanced Air Force ROTC, Detachment 790. He began to excel, not just

academically, but socially as well. He became a member of the Alpha Theta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, and later the chapter’s president. He also met his future wife.

“TSU had some outstanding ladies, and I was fortunate enough to find my life’s partner there, 53 years now and counting,” says Amos, smiling.

Brenda gifted the family with three beautiful children: Soma’ Kismet, Taj Ieesha, and Noel Brandon. When the former majorette reflects on her early years with Amos, she says he eventually

won her heart, but acknowledges she had to get his attention first.

“He had a sports car, and he use to slow up and look over at us (practicing),” recalls Brenda. “One day, I said, I’m going to mess with him. So I kind of stood in the middle of the lane, and when he came by, I did a little pose with my hand on my hip. He stopped. We started dating.”

After he graduated in 1965, Amos went into the U.S. Air Force. He and Brenda married, and the two moved to Arizona where Amos was a missile combat crew commander of the Titan II Intercontinental Ballistic Missile.

Brenda completed her degree at the University of Arizona and pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

However, she never forgot her TSU roots, nor experiences she had there for three years.

An English major, she says some of her fondest memories were being under the tutelage of Dr. Crawford Lindsay, who was head of Tenn State’s English Department at the time.

“He just had that extra interest in me, as a student,” says Brenda, who arrived in 1963. “I got

a lot of nurturing from Tennessee State. It was like a big family, an extended family.”

Amos served 21 years in the Air Force and attained an MBA at California State University.

This led to him stepping out on faith and starting his own business, SoBran, Inc. Using some of the principles he learned in the military, and the belief in one’s self, as stressed at TSU, Amos has led the business from a lean start-up in the basement of his Fairfax County, Virginia, home in 1987 to a nearly $70 million international company. SoBran serves government, commercial and academic clients with the following specializations: Bioscience – partnering in preclinical research and drug discovery; SafeMail® - keeping businesses running and employees safe from chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats; Logistics – handling critical warehousing and inventory functions; Security – reducing theft in inventory supply chain; and Engineering – providing specialized skills for sensitive projects.

private companies and ranked among the top 100 industrial/service companies by Black Enterprise Magazine. In addition to running SoBran, Amos is also a member of the Dayton Art Institute, and had a six-year tour as a director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, Ohio.

Brenda, a member of SoBran’s board of directors, worked with her husband to make SoBran a success, and also found time to make her own mark. With a second degree in broadcast journalism, she won several awards as a producer at major network-affiliate stations, before being asked to help start a news show at Black Entertainment Television, or BET. “I thought it was fascinating,” says Brenda. “I’m going to go in to create a news show from scratch.

It was a labor of love being the show’s debut producer in October 1986 and its senior producer for three years. BET News was nominated for an ACE Award 11 months after we had been on the air.”

Brenda would later take a job with the Public Broadcasting Service at Howard University, where she eventually became director of programming and production, and a member of the PBS National Programming Committee.

While they’ve had their share of success, it has not come easy, which is why the Otis’ try to do all they can to give students an advantage. Part of that is mentoring, they say, but a larger part is giving

money back to the university for scholarships that aid anyone who qualifies to attend.

Every amount helps, says Amos, who is currently vice chairman of the TSU Foundation Board and chair of the Research and Community Development Committee.

“You don’t have to be wealthy,” he says. “I think it’s important we publicize that blacks are stepping up and contributing to their institutions, helping others to cross the bridge from the underclass to the heights of their aspirations and abilities. The fruits of this nation belong to each of its citizens, and we have been citizens of this great nation since 1619. However, we must be knowledgeable of the opportunities, we must know our rights, the means to attain these rights, and how to utilize them to benefit our families and the greater society. Florida Proclaims First Saturday In April Chandra Cheeseborough Day

By Michael McLendon Olympic Gold Medalist and Tennessee State University Tigerbelle Chandra CheeseboroughGuice received yet another accolade for her historic career as a sprinter on April 6 when the state of Florida and the city of Jacksonville honored her by proclaiming the first Saturday in April Chandra Cheeseborough Day. “That’s something that just doesn’t happen on a regular basis, so I’m excited,” said Cheeseborough-Guice, who won Olympic gold medals with the 4×100-meter relay and 4×400-meter relay teams in 1984 and a silver medal in the 1984 Olympics in the 400-meter.

The proclamation was delivered by Jacksonville Rep. Kimberly Daniels at the Florida state house. Cheeseborough-Guice and Daniels were teammates at Jean Ribault High School in Jacksonville where they won back-to-back state championships in 1976 and 1977.

Cheeseborough-Guice, who currently serves as director of track and field at TSU, coaching both the women’s and men’s track teams, has been named Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year on nine occasions.

Since the day will fall on a different date each year, the day will run concurrently with the Cheeseborough Invitational in Florida. CheeseboroughGuice said she is humbled and grateful for the proclamation.

“I believe that dreams do come true. Hard work and dedication, all of those things are something that we can’t get away from,” she said. “It’s not a quick fix. You have to put in the hard work, and it will pay off.”

Dwight Lewis, a 1972 alumnus of TSU and author of Temple’s Tigerbelles: An Illustrated History of Women Who Outran The World, said Cheeseborough-Guice’s career as a coach at TSU reflects her dedication and commitment to the university.

“One of the things I think you have to admire Coach Cheeseborough for is, I think she could have gone elsewhere and become the women’s track coach. But I think because of her love for

Tennessee State, she has stayed there,” said Lewis, who served as editor of The Meter during his time at TSU and worked as a journalist with The Tennessean for over 40 years.

Cheeseborough-Guice, who served as an assistant coach for Team USA at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in March 2018 in Birmingham, U.K and at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, and was the women’s Head Coach at the 2009 IAAF World Championships in Berlin, has been involved at the international level since winning gold at the Pan American Games as a 16year old sprinter.

Lewis said Cheeseborough-Guice was actually the first student to receive a full scholarship at TSU in women’s track.

“The others were either on work-aid or work-study.

Some had to work in the post office and other places, and she was the first one to get a fullscholarship for track,” Cheeseborough-Guice said TSU alumna Wilma Rudolph, the first American woman to win three gold medals in one Olympiad in Rome in 1960, was like a second mother to her during her days as a student at TSU. “I met her in 1976, and that relationship kept growing. I would go to her house during spring break. We kept in contact every Christmas holiday.

At her death, I was there at the bedside, reading Scriptures to her until the day she passed away.”

New Direction continued from page 10

Deborah Chisom, who along with Tammy Taylor, advised the choir before Izzzard came on board, said that as a TSU student and a graduate, she often walked the campus searching for ways to give back and help students. And New Direction filled that void.

“I found my journey with the New Direction Choir,” said Chisom, executive director of Graduate Online Professional Services, who has been an advisor with the choir for more than 10 years. “Although I do not sing with this choir, I am undoubtedly a member of it.”

The “New Direction family unit,” added Taylor, has become a safe haven for many of the students on their first time away from home.

“They lean on us for many things, and we work diligently to be there for them while making sure that they follow university policies,” she said.

Success for the choir has been a blessing to its members, the university family and supporters, said Butler.

Jazmin said she looks forward to sharing new music inspired by her travels and various life experiences. She hopes to one day collaborate

with artists such as Rick Braun, Jonathan Butler, John Legend and India Arie.

“Never give up because there are so many great and amazing people out here who have just been determined and never took no for an answer,” Jazmin said.

Remembering Our Tiger Family Dr. Calvin Atchison Sr., 97 November 5, 2018 Calvin O. Atchison performed in various roles at the university, including professor of psychology, director of development, and vice-president for research and development.

In 1958, Atchison was appointed Coordinator of Graduate Studies and Research for the School of Education. In 1968-1969, Atchison conducted the first self-study for accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In 1972, Atchison was appointed Vice-President for Research and Development, and served in this capacity through 1986. Atchison wrote the charter for the Tennessee State University Foundation, and served as Executive Director until 1989. He retired from the University in 1986.

Burnice Brunson, 102 January 26, 2018 As a member of the TSU Alumni Cheerleader Association, Burnice Brunson was a fixture at Homecoming parades and football games. A retired school teacher and prolific writer, Brunson spread her wisdom in one of about a dozen books she wrote, including Food for Thought: Nourishment for the Soul, which gives tips on how to navigate life’s challenges. Brunson returned and performed with the TSU Alumni Cheerleading Team at age 87 during the 2003 Homecoming, and did so nearly every year after. In 2017 she was featured as ABC World News Tonight’s “Person of the Week” for her longevity and TSU team spirit.

Y.Y. Clark, 89 January 27, 2019 Professor Yvonne Young “Y.Y.” Clark became the first female faculty member in the College of Engineering in 1956. At TSU, Clark distinguished herself as an outstanding teacher in a male-dominated workplace and became a champion for students by ensuring that they received the appropriate help they needed to better understand the material. Clark retired from TSU in 2011 after 55 years of service.

Affectionately known as the “TSU Lady Engineer.” She left a legacy that continues on through the many students she influenced.

King Dunlap IV, 71 February 23, 2019 King David “Big Guy” Dunlap IV played professional football for the Baltimore Colts and the Los Angeles Rams, but had his career cut short by a back injury. He was a Central High School basketball and football standout who played football at Tennessee A&I State University. At Tennessee A&I, Dunlap earned NCAA Little All-American honors as a defensive tackle on Tigers teams that won Black College National Championships in 1965 and 1966. Dunlap worked for 22 years as a supervisor for Roadway Express.

Evelyn Elizabeth Robinson Hardin, 102 October 26, 2018 Evelyn Elizabeth Robinson Hardin was one of six young ladies who established the Alpha Chi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta on the campus of Tennessee A & I State College in 1936. She worked as an educator for over 30 years, and enjoyed membership in the TSU Vintagers Club and the Legacy Club. She was also one of 13 Charter members of the Beta Epsilon Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, which later became known as the Chattanooga Alumnae Chapter. She established the Evelyn Robinson Hardin Delta Sigma Theta Endowed Scholarship, which is awarded to an annually active member of Alpha Chi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. for tuition.

William “Bill” Thomas, 70 January 18, 2019 William “Bill” Thomas was an assistant football coach under the legendary Big John Merritt and served as head coach from 1984-88. He was the first alumnus to lead the university’s football program and athletics department. He led TSU to an 11-0 record in 1984 and guided the Big Blue to a 10-2-1 finish and to the second round of the NCAA Championships during his tenure. Under the leadership of renowned Coach Joe Gilliam, he was part of the historic TSU Black College Championship teams in 1966 and 1970.

Dr. Cynthia Thompson, 96 March 8, 2019 Former Tigerbelle and Jamaican Olympic Champion Cynthia Thompson was one of four women on the first Jamaican Olympic team in 1948. The deft runner and long jumper qualified for the 100m finals and 200m semifinals, making her Jamaica’s first female finalist in an Olympic event. She set an Olympic record in the 200m heats, which was broken by the eventual gold medal winner Fanny Blankers-Koen of the Netherlands. After the 1952 Olympics, Thompson, a member of the Tennessee State Sports Hall of Fame, was a part of the then small Tennessee State Track and Field team coached by the late Ed Temple.

Dr. McDonald Williams, 101 August 11, 2019 McDonald Williams was the first director of the University Honors Program. He served in the position for 23 years before retiring in 1988. He also spent 30 years at the university serving as a professor of English. Williams and his wife, Dr. Jamye Coleman Williams, who spent 14 years as the head of TSU’s Department of Communication, were honored at the Scholarship Gala during Homecoming in 2014. In tandem, the Williams’ co-edited the 1970 publication, The Negro Speaks: The Rhetoric of Contemporary Black Leaders. They have also been co-recipients of numerous accolades and awards, including the 2002 Joe Kraft Humanitarian Award by the Community Foundation.

Changing the Alumni Giving Model Joint Dues and Donations Join the TSU National Alumni Association, a local alumni chapter and make a donation to the TSU Foundation, all with one (1) payment.

The Challenges

> TSU has contact information for nearly 60,000 alumni across the United States > In fiscal year 2018, only 2,684 (5.3%) alumni made a charitable gift to the TSU Foundation > The annual scholarship need is $6 million to enroll and retain more students > Meanwhile, the state of Tennessee funded just 25% of the University’s operating budget

The Solution

The TSU National Alumni Association and alumni chapters are partnering with the TSU Foundation to change the alumni giving model through the Joint Dues and Donations Campaign. Make one payment to the TSU Foundation that covers dues to the alumni association and a donation to the TSU Foundation. This will increase alumni giving and help close the scholarship need gap.
