FIRST SERVE

What’s your style?

I

t might be Rafael Nadal’s gladiator-like spirit, Novak Djokovic’s unique combination of power, athleticism and endurance or Serena Williams’ superb state of mind. You only need to consider the stars and some of their standout qualities to understand that when it comes to tennis style, it’s often an individual thing. That’s why a top priority in presenting our ‘style issue’ was to help you discover what’s special about you when it comes to your tennis. It starts with individual playing styles – and whether you find you’re an all-court maestro like Roger Federer, a big-hitting baseliner with similarities to Victoria Azarenka or a trickster who could keep company with Bernard Tomic, there are many ways to maximise your brand of tennis. We also explore the flashy elements of style. This month,

Todd Woodbridge explains when to use a drop shop for full effect, Stroke Master takes you through the elements of a ‘tweener’ and Patrick Mouratoglou (coach to Serena) explains how the single-handed backhand could be fashioning a revival. Yutaka Nakamura, strength and conditioning trainer for Maria Sharapova, also provides some basic tips on footwork. Losing with style is also a priority, as Stanislas Wawrinka points out. The Swiss followed an epic but ultimately heartbreaking loss to Novak Djokovic at Australian Open 2013 with his best season yet; he is thus well qualified to explain some key lessons in losing. Of course, we can’t talk tennis style without talking tennis fashion. Our guide for what to wear on court will not only have you looking good, but also provide you with solid practical options. Similarly,

a comprehensive footwear review will help you make some key decisions around one of your most critical equipment items. Clearly, there are many elements when it comes to tennis style – and that’s especially true when you consider the multi-dimensional influence of the game’s superstars. Our ‘Style files’ feature shows that whether it’s their impact off the court, strong brand associations, celebrity connections or other individual qualities, the world’s top players understand that styling up is about more than simply looking good. There are some fascinating insights and an important lesson: style might be the final objective, but it’s a basis of substance that will ultimately help you achieve it.

Courting a fashion … From complete cover-ups to near-shocking exposure, few sports have undergone such dramatic fashion changes as tennis. Here are some major milestones Maud Watson, Wimbledon’s first female champion in from over 1884, modelled a long twothe years.

6

Frenchman Rene Lacoste rejects traditional tennis fashion and borrows a polo trend in a short-sleeved cotton shirt. It’s the birth of a new style and a brand that’s still going strong today.

piece white dress, which soon became a popular fashion as women realised white revealed fewer sweat stains than other colours.

The era for full coverage on court. Men preferred long trousers and sweaters; women wore long skirts, heavy blouses and coats.

Late 1880s

Early 1900s

AUSTRALIAN TENNIS MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2013

Suzanne Lenglen, shockingly shortens her skirts to midcalf; clothing constraints are gradually diminishing.

1920s

Women’s hemlines move up again but men make the bolder moves as English player, Henry ‘Bunny’ Austin swaps traditional trousers for shorts at Wimbledon 1932, forever transforming tennis fashion.

1930s

Gussie Moran is one of the first players to expose her underwear by wearing specially tailored lacy knickers. Like many prominent female players of her time, Moran is dressed by famous tennis fashion designer Ted Tinling.

1950s

Hemlines finally move above the knee as functionality becomes a feature of modern tennis fashion.

AUSTRALIAN TENNIS MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2013

Tennis is all about style. From the clothes you wear to the way you strike the ball – it’s a sport that defines your personality. So what style are you? Take our little pop-quiz to work out what you are, who you’re like, and the things that you should be working on to become a better, more stylish, player. 1. When you step up to the service line you: a) Are already thinking about ground strokes b) See the ball as your own personal bullet c) Think about how much spin you can get out of this one d) Are working out how to get the return where you want it e) Have planned out that point

3. You normally win when:

5. You idolise:

a) Your opponent falls asleep mid-rally

a) David ‘The Pitbull’ Ferrer

b) Your opponent reacts too slowly

c) Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! Bernie Tomic!

c) Your opponent gets in a muddle

d) Por cierto, Juan Martin del Potro

d) You get to let rip on a ball

e) Roger ‘The Great’ Federer

e) Normally win? I ALWAYS win! 4. Tennis is:

2. Your forehand is:

a) Exhausting

a) Reliable. So reliable, in fact, you never miss

b) The chance to hit something really hard

b) ... um, what’s a forehand?

c) Like a game of chess

c) Unpredictable. Just how you like it

d) All about waiting for that one perfect shot

d) Huge. And accurate

e) Your destiny

e) All of the above (apart from B)

b) Big John Isner

GEARING UP

Fila Sentinel

Tech Stuff: This shoe is all about cushioning and stability, ensuring you’ll be confident and comfortable. A moulded sock-liner combines with the blend of materials in the upper to provide lots of support. The fulllength Evergrind outsole features a modified herringbone pattern for great traction on all surfaces. The Sentinel’s comfortable fit will have you focused on your game, and not your feet.

PROS: Great value and very stable whilst playing. Really felt like a solid tennis shoe. WORN BY: Jelena Jankovic, Janko Tipsarevic RRP: $100 Available: More info fila.com.au/tennis

FOOT

WEAR GUIDE summer 2013-14 Expert footwork, one of tennis’ most important skills, helps players achieve new heights on the tennis court – and the right footwear is the perfect place to start. Australian Tennis Magazine reviews some new ranges from the major brands to help you make your footwear decisions this summer. 22

AUSTRALIAN TENNIS MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2013

ATM Review: From the first moment we stepped into the Sentinel, a close fit around the arches was noticeable. The shoe’s best feature was its stability, with the Sentinel creating a solid power base during ground strokes. While slightly hard and lacking some arch support, the sole still gave enough comfort while playing on a hard court. Three lace holes allow you to add support to your ankle area – a great feature that contributes to the shoe’s exceptional stability. Fantastic value for a top-end shoe. CONS: Harder sole and didn’t get the best traction of the shoes trialled. Comfort: Stability: Traction: Toe protection: Weight: Overall:

ASICS GEL Resolution 5

Tech Stuff: The GEL Resolution 5 is packed with features, including Professional Heal Fitting in the heel collar, which enhances fit and comfort, while rear foot and forefoot GEL units boost cushioning. A wrapped ASICS High Abrasion Resistant outsole with a stitched toe ensures resistance to wear and tear, particularly the type experienced during toe drag.

EDITOR'S PICK PROS: Fantastic built in arch. No slip. Perfect fit for wider feet. WORN BY: Sam Stosur, Gael Monfils RRP: $200 Available: asics.com.au

ATM Review: Our tester’s top shoe. The GEL Resolution 5 provided optimum comfort and traction with the court. Has an elevated pad that adds arch support and provides amazing comfort. The traction of the shoe is first class and allowed for greater movement around the court due to the stability while pushing off and changing direction. Trialled during training and match play the shoe reacted with the court and allows players the extra trust in their footwork. A durable sole and toe area makes this a great long-term choice. CONS: Slightly heavier than other models. Comfort: Traction: Weight:

Stability: Toe protection: Overall:
