If you really think about it, the concept of hope can be life changing. The dictionary defines hope as a feeling of expectation or desire for something, usually something better. The Biblical implication of hope is a patient confidence in the promises of God and His faithfulness. I asked a co-worker for her on-the-spot thought of the word hope and she said, “persevering optimism.” I like that! As Christians we are tasked with always being ready to give the reason for the hope that lies within us. What is the reason for our hope and what hope are we talking about? The hope of forgiveness and salvation so we don’t go to hell, the hope of peace and prosperity, health and happiness so we don’t suffer? If we already have the assurance of forgiveness and eternal life in Jesus, then is that the hope or is that hope already realized? Will there ever be a time of peace and prosperity with no suffering while we are in this life? Is that what we hope for? The dictionary gives an archaic definition of hope as a “feeling of trust.” Perhaps trust could be considered archaic when one looks at the condition of the world we live in now. However, is it only our salvation or future blessings that would improve our current condition, that we are to hope for. Should our only reason for hope be what we can receive from God or does that hope also include what we would want Him to receive from us? I believe the call to be ready to give the reason for the hope that lies within us is not only the persevering optimism that we can trust that God has a plan and He is in control, but also that we, in our persevering optimism, can give back to Him our plan to completely love Him. And also that it is our desire that He will be able to trust that we will never give up our faith in Him no matter what we face. The life changing concept of hope is that it is a two-way street. God is not in this by Himself.
