The Paris Exposition Universelle was the city’s third world fayre held from 1 May to 10 November 1878. At the exhibition, the retailer Thomas Goode is recorded as displaying the entire Minton exhibit. A set of nine plates from the service, previously in the Thurston Collection, was sold by Doyle, New York, 28 September 2016. A letter from Joan Jones, curator of the Minton Museum, 12 August 1986 confirms that the plate was exhibited at the Paris Exhibition 1878 and notes that the painting is “after Vernet” and that the original artwork is displayed on the walls of the Minton Museum

Louis-Stanislas Lenoir-Ravrio (1783-1846) was the son of André-Antoine Ravrio (1759-1814), who was one of the finest French bronziers of the period. Lenoir-Ravrio worked with Antoine Ravrio for a number of years and became his partner in 1811 and the business continued on af ter Antoine Ravrio’s death. He gained repute for work supplied to the Garde-Meuble and for his exhibited work, for which he was awarded a silver medal.

To our Knowledge, a John Roger Arnold marine chronometer number 471 was illustrated in a German book on Chronometers and dated circa 1816. The Webster family were one of the great clockmaking dynasties of London, having been founded in Exchange Alley in 1711 by William Webster I who had been apprentice and journeyman to the famed clockmaker Thomas Tompion. His son William Webster II took over the business in 1734, the year before his father died, and became Master of the Clockmakers’ Company in 1755. The family business continued operating until the early 20th century. The present clock exhibits the qualities and features of clocks by William Webster II.

Hubbard advertised in the Lincoln, Rutland and Stamford Mercury, 28 August and 11 September 1807 for ‘Three Journeymen Windsor and Fancy chairmakers’.
A number of Windsor chairs are known stamped HUBBARD GRANTHAM, which are attributed to this maker (illustrated in Sergeant and Parker, Regional Furniture (2019), figs. 1-19). No date of death is known to be recorded, but his son John probably succeeded to the business about 1820.

CITES-restricted items and Ivory Exempt items will be accompanied by a current CITES Article 10 licence/Ivory Exemption Declaration where applicable and the licence/exemption declaration number will be displayed within the original catalogue description (required by UK law). Both CITES Article 10 licences and Ivory Exemption Declarations are non-transferable and buyers must apply for a new Article 10 licence/Ivory Exemption Declaration in their name if they wish to sell to a third party.
It is the sole responsibility of the buyer and/or contracted shipping agent to have in place the correct CITES re-export and import licences into the buyer’s chosen country before shipping can be undertaken.
