C

omo cualquier comunidad en nuestro país, San José del Cabo tuvo una época de eventos sociales caracterizados por una gran participación. Las reuniones eran alegres, coloridas y siempre rodeadas de calor, ya sea por el clima o por su gente.

Las huertas, playas, plazas e inclusive las calles, eran escenarios ideales para organizar fiestas, desfiles y celebraciones. A lo largo de los años, el propio crecimiento y desarrollo han llevado al destino a evolucionar en este sentido.

En numerosas ocasiones hemos resaltado el papel fundamental e importantísimo que el Fondo Nacional de Fomento al Turismo desempeña en el municipio de Los Cabos. En el tema de eventos, no es la excepción.

Cuando Fonatur inició sus operaciones, construyó un centro cultural y de convenciones que cumplió muy bien con su cometido durante ese tiempo, en el que se llevaron a cabo varios eventos exitosos. Sin embargo, la demanda de mayores espacios rápidamente rebasó su capacidad y las expectativas y proyecciones también fueron superadas. El espíritu deportivo, la aventura y las actividades al aire libre exigieron otros lugares para estos eventos importantes.

ike any community in our country, San Jose del Cabo was home to social events where everyone loved to participate. The gatherings were very happy, very colorful, and always surrounded by warmth, either from the weather or from the people.

The orchards, the beaches, the squares and the streets were all ideal settings to host parties, parades and celebrations. Over the years, growth and development have led to changes in the way events are celebrated.

On many occasions we have referred to the fundamental and important role that Fondo Nacional de Fomento al Turismo (Fonatur) has been playing in the municipality. That is true for events, as well.

When the Fonatur started operations, it built a cultural and convention center that fulfilled its mission very well by holding several successful events. However, the demand for larger spaces quickly exceeded the center’s capacity. On the one hand, the expectations and projections were met, but on the other, the love of sports, adventure and outdoor activities typical of this destination demanded other types of venues.

Como resultado, San José del Cabo, dejó de ser un pueblo para convertirse en una verdadera cabecera municipal. Los Cabos era el nuevo nombre utilizado para la comercialización de este destino, así nació turísticamente en conjunto con Cabo San Lucas.

Sería prácticamente imposible describir en un solo artículo la cantidad de eventos que han tenido lugar en Los Cabos en años recientes.

Habrá a la vez, algunos que por su relevancia han sucedido y no se tiene registro por la privacidad requerida. Obviamente, no nos referimos a eventos espontáneos, sino a aquellos que fueron el resultado de una programación, planificación y organización adecuada.

Esto incluye eventos naturales como el eclipse del siglo ocurrido el 11 de julio de 1991, donde las playas de Los Cabos fueron los mejores lugares para observar el fenómeno. El eclipse atrajo una gran cantidad de científicos, periodistas y turistas de todo el mundo y ocasionó un revuelo en la comunidad a pesar de que duró solo unos minutos.

Otro hecho significativo que recordamos perfectamente fue la cumbre de APEC en el año 2002 donde las 21 economías más importantes del anillo Asia – Pacífico se reunieron en Los Cabos y el lugar se mantuvo prácticamente cerrado en toda la extensión de la palabra. Nunca en su historia Los Cabos había estado tan custodiado por tierra, aire y agua. A la población local se nos solicitó que estuviéramos en casa. Pocos transitaban por la carretera durante este evento en el que los 21 líderes de estos países se reunieron. Definitivamente un evento para recordar.

La cumbre fue una oportunidad única para ver la globalización de manera tan cercana, en comparación con la vida tranquila del municipio. También, una perfecta ocasión para apoyar la organización del evento. La difusión internacional que se generó fue uno de los momentos clave en la historia turística de Los Cabos que influyó positivamente en el crecimiento inmobiliario, turístico, económico y social.

As a result, San Jose del Cabo stopped being a town and became a municipal center. Los Cabos was the new name used for marketing along with Cabo San Lucas.

It would be practically impossible to describe in a single article the great and varied number of events that have taken place over recent years.

And it is perhaps relevant that each of the different events was so unique and so special that I do not believe there is a record of them all. Obviously, we are not referring to spontaneous events but to those that were the result of proper programming, planning and organization.

That includes natural events such as the eclipse of the century on July 11, 1991, where the beaches of Los Cabos were the best locations to observe the phenomenon. The eclipse attracted many scientists, journalists and tourists from around the world and caused a great uproar in the community even though it was over in just a few minutes.

Another significant event we remember very well was the APEC summit in 2002. Twenty-one of the most important Asia-Pacific economies met in Los Cabos. As a result, the area was practically under lock and key. Never in history had Los Cabos been so guarded by land, air and sea. The local population was asked to stay home and very few traveled on the road during the times the 21 leaders were in meetings. It was an event to remember. The summit was a unique opportunity to see the outside world "up close" compared to the quiet life of the municipality. It was also an opportunity for us to support the organization of the event. That, incidentally, was one of the watershed moments that introduced the destination to people who otherwise would never have visited and who now have positively influenced our real estate, tourism, the economy and social growth.

Solo 10 años después, en junio del 2012, nos eligieron sede de uno de los eventos políticos y económicos más importantes del mundo: la Cumbre del G20. Otro evento muy afortunado para el desarrollo de Los Cabos.

As if that were not enough, only ten years later in June 2012, we would once again host one of the most important political and economic events in the world: the G20 Summit.

Los presidentes de los 20 países más poderosos del mundo sesionaron en el edificio que para tal efecto el gobierno federal construyó: el Centro Internacional de Convenciones. Una vez más, estábamos rodeados de una impresionante cantidad de seguridad. Nos volvió a poner en los ojos del mundo refrendando nuestra imagen como el lugar ideal para eventos, sin importar lo complicado de la logística.

The presidents of the 20 most powerful countries in the world met in the convention center built by the federal government. Once again, we were surrounded by an impressive amount of security.

That also turned the eyes of the world in our direction and the images made it clear this was a perfect place for any event.

El clima, la seguridad, la belleza natural, el aislamiento geográfico, y, al mismo tiempo, las facilidades de servicio y la calidez de la gente, permitieron un resultado impecable.

Todos estos factores indiscutiblemente fueron importantes.

All this was not the result of luck. The climate, natural beauty, geographical isolation, and security, as well as the facilities and the people made it possible. All were undoubtedly important factors in the selection of the right location.

Por supuesto, hay distintas atracciones de la naturaleza que favorecen a la zona, como son el avistamiento de ballenas que cautiva a turistas año con año, el anidamiento de tortugas y eventos astronómicos que por la transparencia del aire pueden observarse con cierta periodicidad.

Mencioné que el origen de estos eventos siempre ha estado rodeado de alegría y color. Hoy no es una excepción. Cada año varias poblaciones como Todos Santos, San José del Cabo, Loreto, Cabo San Lucas, El Triunfo, Santiago y otros más, organizan extraordinarios festivales de artesanía, gastronómicos, culturales y musicales, así como exposiciones de pintura y escultura.

Los torneos deportivos que se celebran durante todo el año, dependiendo de la temporada, son una de las fuentes de ingresos turísticos más importantes. En pesca deportiva tenemos los Torneos del Bisbee’s considerado uno de los más significativos del mundo y Los Cabos Billfish Tournament que tiene varios años de trayectoria. El Abierto de Tenis Los Cabos, Ironman, Baja 1000 y, recientemente, el Extreme Sailing Series son también algunos de los varios maratones que hay en el territorio.

Of course, other attractions that favor the area are the natural events that currently bring in thousands of tourists year after year. Examples include whale watching, turtle nesting and many astronomical events that can be easily observed due to the clean air.

I mentioned that the origin of these events has always been surrounded by joy and color. Today is no exception. Year after year, various towns such as Todos Santos, San Jose del Cabo, Loreto, Cabo San Lucas, El Triunfo, Santiago and others, host handicraft festivals, food festivals, and musicals, as well as painting and sculpture exhibitions.

The sports tournaments that take place throughout the year, depending on the season, are one of the most important sources of income. There’s sport fishing, including Bisbee’s Tournaments, the most important fishing tournament in the world and Los Cabos Billfish Tournament. There also tennis tournaments (ATP), marathons, Ironman competitions, and off-road racing like Baja 1000, and recently the final of Extreme Sailing Series.

San José Jazz Weekend es un festival que tiene varios años realizándose con mucho éxito en la zona hotelera de San José del Cabo, así como otros festivales alternos que han surgido con gran aceptación.

Habría que destacar capacidad disponible que tienen los hoteles en Los Cabos para realizar exposiciones, congresos y convenciones, siendo este segmento un área de oportunidad que tiene mucho por crecer aún. ¿Qué decir sobre las empresas especializadas en bodas? Es un segmento que ha crecido como ningún otro en los últimos años. Las locaciones en mar, desierto, campo de golf, restaurantes y hoteles son impresionantes. Bodas que van desde lo más íntimo y privado hasta aquellas que incluyen conciertos de grandes bandas y artistas que son traídos de forma privada.

Los Cabos Film Festival celebró el pasado mes de noviembre su 7ma. edición, es un festival que sorprende cada año con el gran despliegue de artistas invitados. Asimismo, el año pasado se inició con gran lucimiento Culinary Awards Los Cabos que reunió y premió a lo mejor de la gastronomía local.

Ciertamente, hay varios eventos más por nombrar, es imposible mencionarlos a todos en un artículo; así que les sugiero leer toda la edición. Los Cabos es un lugar natural de fiesta, alegría, magia y color. ¡Un lugar donde la imaginación es la única limitante para llevar a cabo un evento!

San Jose Jazz Weekend is a festival that has been held for many years with great success in the hotel zone of San Jose del Cabo, plus other alternate festivals that have emerged with great acceptance.

We should also mention the available room capacity of the hotels in the area to carry out huge exhibitions, conferences and conventions.

It is an area of opportunity that still has a lot of room to grow.

Weddings are something else. It is a segment that has grown like no other in recent years. The expansion has led to the most spectacular events that can be imagined at sea, in the desert, on golf courses and in hotels surrounded by stunning scenery and concluded with an awesome display of fireworks. The weddings range from the most intimate and private to those that include performances by great bands and artists that are brought in specifically for this purpose.

The annual Los Cabos Film Festival has been a popular success and last year was the first time for the Los Cabos Culinary Awards. The successful event honored the best local cuisines and gave attendees the chance to enjoy many local dishes.

I have certainly forgotten many more, but it is impossible to mention them all. Los Cabos is a joyful, magical, and colorful place for celebrations. It is a place where the only limitation is one’s imagination.

Tendencia El Arte de Viajar

Ángel Carbajal es el Chef de Nick-San y quien ha dirigido la historia de este restaurante de comida japonesa en Los Cabos. En esta entrevista, Ángel emprende un viaje por sus recuerdos. Al escucharlo, comprendemos el cariño hacía su empresa y, al mismo tiempo, el secreto del por qué permanece como uno de los restaurantes favoritos para locales y visitantes.

Angel Carbajal is the chef of Nick-San and has overseen the popular Japanese restaurant in Los Cabos since the beginning. The restaurant is about to celebrate its 25th anniversary! In this interview, Angel takes on a journey of his memories from his beginnings. He helps us understand the value and, at the same time, the secret of remaining one of the favorite restaurants for locals and visitors.

Todo inicia en el año 1982, cuando Ángel decide hacer un cambio radical en su vida y se muda a Los Cabos. Es cuando comienza su historia personal en esta península.

Everything began in 1982, when Angel decided to make a radical change in his life and moved to Los Cabos. It is when his personal history begins in this peninsula.

“Muchas personas están involucradas en este logro. Si nos vamos por un recorrido a través del tiempo, comenzaría cuando me gradué de la carrera de ingeniería eléctrica. En la búsqueda de un cambio, llegué primero a La Paz, que era el lugar donde vivía mi padre.

Junto con un tío hacemos un primer intento de negocio propio al abrir una ferretería. ¡No nos fue nada bien! Tuvimos que dejar la mercancía en el valle y decidimos cargar el camión con naranjas. Este fue el primer contacto en Los Cabos con hoteles y restaurantes quienes compraban naranjas por kilos, entre ellos Alfonso Fisher y Jorge Viaña, en ese entonces al frente de Cilantros”.

Ángel se enamora del mar y surge su pasión por la pesca y el buceo. Para él, es un paraíso en sí mismo porque representa libertad y aventura. Todo es posible en alta mar y nada es seguro. Sin embargo, reafirma que no hay mal día para ir de pesca, porque las vistas y el amanecer son regalos de la naturaleza.

“Empecé a trabajar de mesero, y un día me invitó un cliente a tomar una clase de esnórquel, a partir de entonces nos volvimos grandes amigos. De hecho, después trabajé como guía de esnórquel. Más tarde, decidí certificarme en buceo. Cuando buceas te das cuenta de la enorme diversidad de peces.

Mi primer acercamiento con la pesca deportiva fue a través de mi amigo Dell. La adrenalina de estar en alta mar solo con tres cañas fue increíble. Obtenía bastante pesca, otras veces se escapaba todo. Sin embargo, si estás atento aprendes de la naturaleza que te muestra dónde están los puntos para sacar carnada y dónde están los grupos de dorado, atún o marlín”. Ángel descubre su pasión por la pesca, empieza a trabajar en el restaurante Sr. Sushi, primero como mesero hasta llegar a ser gerente, y ¡chef improvisado cuando hacía falta! Es en este momento cuando conoce por primera vez a Nick, quien se convierte en socio y gran amigo.

"Many people were involved in this achievement. If we go on a journey through time, it would begin when I graduated with an electrical engineering degree.

Searching for a change, I first arrived in La Paz where my father lived.

Working with an uncle, we tried at our own business when we set up a hardware store. It did not go well! We had to leave merchandise in the valley and decided to load the truck with oranges. This was my first interaction in Los Cabos with hotels and restaurants that bought oranges by the kilos.

Among them were Alfonso Fisher and Jorge Viaña who, at that time, were working for Cilantros.”

Angel fell in love with the sea and developed a passion for fishing and diving. For him, the sea was paradise. It represented freedom and adventure.

Everything is possible on the high seas and, at the same time, nothing is certain. However, it reaffirmed that there is no bad day to go fishing. The views and the sunrise are, in themselves, gifts of life.

"When I was a waiter, a client invited me to take a snorkeling class. From that point on we became great friends. In fact, I ended up working as a snorkel guide. Later, I decided to get certified in diving. When you dive, you realize the enormous diversity of fish.

My first contact with sport fishing was through a friend, Dell. The adrenaline of being on the high seas alone, with sometimes three rods, was incredible. Sometimes I took home a lot, sometimes everything escaped. However, nature taught me the points where the bait will be taken and how to locate schools of dorado, tuna and marlin.”

At the same time Angel discovered his passion for fishing, he started working as a waiter and then a manager of the restaurant Mr. Sushi. He even served as an improvised chef when needed! It was then that he first met Nick who would become his partner and a great friend.

“Nick frecuentaba este restaurante cada vez que visitaba Cabo San Lucas. En una ocasión, estaba cenando con su esposa, y de repente lo veo detrás de la barra de sushi para atender a unos amigos suyos que llegaron.

Aprecié primero su voluntad de hacerlo, y también su confianza en que nuestro producto estaba fresco, tanto que me inspiró a preparar sushi.”

“La primera propuesta de negocio de Nick fue enviar producto a Japón, con todo respeto no acepté, no porque no fuera un buen ingreso, sino por el amor que le tenía al mar. Posteriormente, le comenté sobre un nuevo proyecto en la recién inaugurada Plaza Bonita. Nick me ayudó con uniformes de uno de sus restaurantes en Nueva York y con el apoyo del Chef Taka San, su brazo derecho. Éste fue el inicio del restaurante La Terraza.”

Tras dos años de trabajo en sociedad en esta plaza, Nick regresa una vez más, en esta ocasión con planos en la mano y un proyecto que transforma la trayectoria empresarial de Ángel, y, a la vez, la propuesta gastronómica en Los Cabos.

“Recuerdo estar trabajando aún en el restaurante La Terraza, cuando llegó Nick y me mostró unos planos del arquitecto Tsuno Tanaka. Decidí aceptar el reto e involucrar a toda mi familia.

Esto incluyó a mi padre Santiago Carbajal, mi hermana Carmen y mis hermanos. Sabíamos sobre electricidad, plomería y entre todos desarrollamos ese proyecto; es importante agregar que le tomamos un cariño especial”.

Nick-San abre su primera locación en el centro de Cabo San Lucas en 1994, con siete mesas, una barra de 24 sillas y una cocina con tostador, microondas, parrilla y estufa. El nombre en español se traduce como “Señores Ángel y Nick”. La ubicación se ha consolidado como una de las favoritas.

Con el tiempo llega la expansión de Nick-San, se amplía la primera locación y se abre la segunda en Las Tiendas de Palmilla en el Corredor Turístico de Los Cabos. Se abren dos franquicias en la Ciudad de México, una en Nuevo Vallarta y recientemente se inaugura Nick-San en San Miguel de Allende.

En Estados Unidos se tiene una alianza con el restaurante Mastro’s que consiste en ofrecer una selección del menú de Nick-San en los 18 de los restaurantes que conforman esta empresa.

Después de 25 años, Ángel acepta el desafío de ser constantemente creativo en sus recetas para exceder las expectativas de sus comensales. Se esfuerza por innovar en sus platillos, sin copiar lo que existe de oferta en el mercado.

“Es muy halagador tener clientes que llegan a Los Cabos en su avión privado solo a cenar porque Nick-San es sencillamente el mejor lugar para ellos. Fuimos los pioneros en preparar sushi en Baja California. En realidad, no hemos tomado fotografías a las celebridades que han ido a comer al restaurante, no obstante, tengo muchísimos recuerdos”.

Nicksan es un restaurante que se caracteriza por servir recetas originales. Ángel lo define como una cocina con sabores de ingredientes mexicanos y acentos asiáticos.

Una anécdota interesante sucede durante la filmación de Troya en Los Cabos, cuando un misterioso comensal repite su visita durante toda la semana. Resulta ser Orlando Bloom, a quién después Ángel lleva de pesca en su panga.

“Aunque Orlando no había tomado una caña de pescar antes, ¡resultó ser un gran pescador! Lanzó el anzuelo y lo primero que atrapó fue nada menos que un marlín”

Ángel de verdad cree que Los Cabos lo elige a él para incursionar en el mundo gastronómico hace 25 años.

Desde el momento que abre el primer Nick-San en el centro de Cabo San Lucas, ha mantenido la reputación de excelencia por los ingredientes frescos y productos importados desde Japón que utiliza para cocinar. Ángel se convierte en pionero y marca un antes y un después en la gastronomía.

“A lo largo de 25 años, he visto el crecimiento de Los Cabos en un gran destino turístico, hemos sido parte de esa historia y de la transformación gastronómica desde la primera fila”.

"Nick frequented the restaurant every time he traveled to the destination. On one occasion, he was having dinner with his wife and was shocked to see him behind the sushi bar greeting some friends who came to dinner. I appreciated his confidence and that the product was so fresh it inspired him to prepare sushi.”

"Nick's first business proposal was to send seafood to Japan. With all due respect, I rejected the idea, not because it wouldn’t provide a good income, but because of the love I had for the sea. A year later, I told him about a new project in Plaza Bonita. Nick supported me with uniforms from one of his restaurants in New York and with the support of Chef Taka San, his right arm.”

Nick returned after two years, this time with plans in hand and a project that would transform the business career of Angel, as well as dining in Los Cabos.

"I remember working in La Terraza restaurant when Nick arrived. He presented me with plans from the architect Tsuno Tanaka. I decided to accept the challenge and involved my entire family. That included my father, Santiago Carbajal, my sister Carmen, and my brothers. We knew about electricity and plumbing and together we developed the project. It is important to note that we have great affection for each other."

With seven tables, a bar with 24 chairs and a kitchen with a toaster, microwave, grill and stove, Nick-San opened in the center of Cabo San Lucas in 1994. The name in Spanish translates as "Señores Ángel y Nick." The location became a favorite.

In time, customers demanded a bigger location and an expansion to Mexico City, Nuevo Vallarta, San Miguel de Allende and an alliance with the restaurant Mastro's. The American company has a selection of Nick-San's menu items in 18 restaurants.

"It is very satisfying to have clients who can arrive by private plane just for dinner. That’s because only the best will do for them. We were the pioneers of sushi throughout Baja California. We are not in the habit of taking pictures of celebrities who visit the restaurant. However, I do have many memories.”

One interesting anecdote was during the filming of Troy in Los Cabos. A mysterious diner repeatedly visited the restaurant throughout the week. It turned out to be Orlando Bloom, whom Angel would later take fishing in his panga.

“Even though Orlando has not held a fishing pole before, he turned out to be a great fisherman! He cast the bait and the first thing he caught was nothing less than a marlin."

After 25 years, Angel still accepts the challenge of constantly being creative in order to exceed the expectations of his guests. He works hard to be innovative instead of copying what is already in the market.

Nick-San is a restaurant where the main challenge is to present the diner with original recipes. Angel defines it as a cuisine with flavors of Mexico and Asian accents.

25 years ago, Angel believed it was Los Cabos that chose him to enter the gastronomic world. From the moment the first Nick-San opened in downtown Cabo San Lucas, he has maintained the restaurant’s reputation for excellence by using the freshest local ingredients and imported products from Japan. Angel becomes a pioneer and sets a watershed in the gastronomy.

“Over the course of 25 years, I have seen Los Cabos grow as a tourist destination. We have been part of that history and have watched the culinary transformation from the front row."

odos los grandes eventos hoy consolidados en Los Cabos tienen un comienzo interesante.

Abelardo Juárez & Ulises Torre comparten su pasión por el surf y el compromiso que asumen con Los Cabos. En esta entrevista nos platicaron cómo surge esta idea y se transforma en una misión dedicada a impulsar un festival que celebra un estilo de vida de sol y playa.

El modelo original lo ejecutaron primero en Mazatlán.

Tenían 2 objetivos en mente cuando comenzaron a planear un evento enfocado al surf. Una era llevar el turismo a su destino y la otra era sobrevivir a la recesión financiera.

“Al ser patrocinadores y encargados de la producción, nos dimos cuenta de que el surf es un deporte muy popular por la comunidad local. Es un festival de playa donde la música, la moda y la gastronomía atraen al mercado internacional.”

“Buscábamos hacer un evento de alto nivel. El primer año en Mazatlán fue un éxito, sin embargo, el segundo año fue más difícil. Entonces empezamos a considerar transportarlo a Los Cabos, en especial, por la gran comunidad de Mazatlecos que residen aquí”.

El potencial que observaron en Los Cabos es el factor determinante para ambos al momento de cambiar la sede del evento de surf hacía este destino, así nace Los Cabos Open of Surf. La naturaleza y la aventura al aire libre son los pasatiempos predilectos que tienen en común Abelardo y Ulises. Además de las playas y surfear, disfrutan acampar, practicar senderismo y ciclismo.

“Es complicado el surf. Estamos a la merced de la madre naturaleza. Hemos tenido que desmantelar y recorrer días de competencia en algunas ocasiones.”

All the great events now established in this destination have an interesting beginning. Abelardo Juarez & Ulises share their passion for surfing, as well as their commitment to Los Cabos and we share how their idea became a mission dedicated to promoting a festival that celebrates a lifestyle of sun and sand.

The original idea started in Mazatlan. Abelardo and Ulises had two goals in mind when they began thinking about how to create the event. One was to bring tourism to the destination and the other was to survive the financial recession.

“Being sponsors and in charge of the production, we realized that surfing is a very popular sport for the local community. It's a beach festival where music, fashion and food attract an international market.”

"We were looking for a high-level event. The first year in Mazatlan was a great success.

However, the second year was more difficult. We were already thinking about transporting it to Los Cabos, especially since a big community of Mazatlecos resides here.”

Baja California Sur en general tiene playas hermosas para surfear. Lo que hace que la competencia en Los Cabos sea más interesante es la infraestructura y el nivel de servicio.

Los Cabos Open of Surf es el principal evento profesional de surf y música en México. Ha crecido y evolucionado tras iniciar en 2013 como un evento ASP 6 estrellas para hombres; y en 2014 se convirtió en la primera competencia de mujeres en ASP de 6 estrellas en México. En el 2015 la WSL incorpora el evento a sus torneos calificativos oficiales en la categoría QS6000 para mujeres, WSL para hombres y Junior Pro de mujeres.

Aprender a manejar las frustraciones es uno de los mayores aprendizajes para sus fundadores. Las olas, los huracanes, y los vientos se vuelven el mayor reto. Sin embargo, están conscientes de su responsabilidad como productores para estar preparados a reaccionar ante las contingencias.

Dicho esto, las condiciones son una de las principales razones por las que Open of Surf se encuentra en Los Cabos.

Las playas atraen a surfistas profesionales y, con ellos, a las cámaras internacionales. Cabe mencionar que existe también en el destino una comunidad importante de surfistas.

Solo 5 competencias son parte de la Asociación de Surfistas Profesionales quienes otorgan 6000 puntos o estrellas, una de estas 5 es Los Cabos, las otras son Australia, Brasil, Hawái y California.”

Para apoyar a los surfistas mexicanos, se otorgan entradas de "comodín". Esto le da exposición a un nivel de competencia de clase mundial y les permite aprender de los mejores profesionales de surf. La categoría profesional junior se ha convertido en un semillero de futuras estrellas internacionales. Vale la pena hacer un seguimiento de ellos durante toda la temporada.

Baja California Sur in general has beautiful beaches for surfing. What makes the competition in Los Cabos interesting is the hospitality and level of service.

Los Cabos Open of Surf is the premiere professional surf and music event in Mexico.

Beginning in 2013, The Los Cabos Open of Surf started as an ASP 6-Star Men’s event, and in 2014, it became the first Women’s ASP 6-Star competition in Mexico. In 2015, the Los Cabos Open of Surf became WSL Women's QS6000, as well as a WSL Men's and Women's Pro Junior Event.

For Abelardo and Ulises, nature and outdoor adventure are passions they have in common. In addition to the beaches and surfing, they enjoy camping, hiking and biking. Their love for Los Cabos was a determining factor for both when they decided to move the Open of Surf.

“Surfing is complicated. We are at the mercy of Mother Nature. There have been times when we had to dismantle and wait through days of competition.”

Learning to deal with frustrations was one of the greatest lessons for the founders. The waves, the winds and even the hurricanes presented enormous challenges. However, smart producers always have contingency plans in place.

That said, the conditions were one of the foremost reasons the festival is in Los Cabos. The beaches attract professional surfers and, with them, the international cameras. It should be mentioned that there is also an important community of surfers in the destination.

"Los Cabos itself is the biggest attraction. The level of service and the food motivates tourists and athletes to come. Many of them arrive before the competition to enjoy Los Cabos with their families and friends.

From the start, professional surfers with millions of followers have participated in the competition. They end up being the main promoters of the destination. Adding media alliances with the World League of the South (WSL) and including live broadcasts of the event have allowed us to have an incredible impact. The media carries a lot of weight.”

"To give you an idea of the level of competition, there are 10 annual qualifying surf tournaments around the world. Only five are part of the Association of Professional Surfers competitions that award 6000 points or stars. One is Los Cabos, the others are Australia, Brazil, Hawaii and California."

To support Mexican surfers, "wild card" entries are awarded. This gives them exposure to a world-class level of competition and allows them to learn from the best surf professionals of the world. In addition, the junior pro category has become a hotbed for future international stars. It is worth keeping track of them throughout the season.

Geoffrey Director Fernández Torneo Abierto de Tenis Los Cabos 250 ¡La atracción principal, por supuesto, es el tenis! Sin embargo, para los jugadores hay muchas opciones de entretenimiento en torno a este evento. Los que jugaron en los torneos anteriores, felices aceptan regresar; y para los aficionados, es igualmente atractivo.

¿Cómo surge la idea de iniciar el ATP en Los Cabos?

Derivado del éxito durante 25 años del torneo de tenis en Acapulco, se consideró la idea de traer un segundo torneo a México, y Los Cabos definitivamente cumplía con todos los requisitos. Se dieron los términos para comprar la franquicia del torneo de Colombia, y después de un análisis de destinos, ¡empezamos en Los Cabos!

¿Qué factores consideran pilares para consolidar este evento?

El pilar que ha impulsado el torneo, sin duda, es el capital humano. Hemos construido un equipo excelentemente capacitado para todas las áreas del torneo: boletaje, logística, infraestructura, servicio médico, prensa, relaciones públicas, mercadotecnia, sistemas, entre otros. Cada uno conoce su área perfectamente y sabe como tratar a los aficionados y jugadores que nos visitan. Son el factor fundamental para que el evento sea lo que es hoy.

¿Cuál fue el mayor reto al comenzar el proyecto?

¡El mayor reto, es llenar el estadio! Llegar a un destino, del cuál no conocíamos nada presentaba un obstáculo; sin embargo, todas las instancias que trabajan por Los Cabos nos han abierto las puertas.

How did the idea of bringing the ATP to Los Cabos come about?

The main attraction, of course, is the tennis.

For the ATP players, however, there are many entertainment options revolving around this event.

Those who played in the 2017 or 2018 tournaments are more likely to come back the following year.

The success of the tournament in Acapulco over the past 25 years brought about the idea of a second tournament in Mexico. The Colombian tournament franchise is in charge of everything and after an analysis of destinations, it was determined that Los Cabos had all the required services.

What factors did you consider necessary to make a successful tournament?

The most important factor was undoubtedly human capital. We needed capable people to handle ticketing, logistics, infrastructure, medical services, the press, public relations, marketing, IT systems, and more. This team knows your area inside and out and knows how to treat the fans and players. They are the fundamental reason the event is what it is today.

What was the biggest challenge when starting the project?

Without a doubt, filling the stadium! Arriving at a destination that we knew nothing about presented quite an obstacle. However, every challenge has opened many doors for us.

¿Cómo ha evolucionado el torneo durante los primeros años?

Los números de asistencia han aumentado. El primer año, tuvimos una asistencia casi completa el sábado. El segundo año conseguimos un viernes y sábado llenos. El año pasado fue un récord con el miércoles y sábado llenos, viernes casi lleno. La creciente asistencia es una prueba de que los aficionados locales y turistas se han entusiasmado con el ATP.

¿Cómo han logrado mantener el nivel de tenistas invitados?

Al principio, como cualquier producto nuevo, se genera cierta especulación por parte de los jugadores; así que convencer a los atletas para participar fue otro de los retos. El año pasado la situación cambio, los jugadores han sido los mejores embajadores y promotores del destino, tenemos más interesados en venir a Los Cabos a competir.

Así, podemos confirmar que de la vista nace el amor, la belleza natural, la infraestructura y el servicio incomparable en Los Cabos ha permitido que algunos jugadores firmen contrato para regresar el próximo año, aún sin haberse ido. Esto es una muestra de que el torneo ha crecido a pasos agigantados.

How has it grown and evolved over the years?

The attendance numbers have gotten bigger. The first year, the arena was almost full on Saturday. The second year, Friday and Saturday were sold out. Last year set an attendance record with Wednesday and Saturday sold out and Friday almost full. The growing attendance is proof the locals are enthusiastic about the event.

How have you been able to continue to attract such a high level of tennis players?

When the event was new, there was some hesitancy on the part of the players. Convincing top-notch athletes to participate was another challenge to overcome. Last year, things went our way. As a result, players have been the best ambassadors and promoters of the destination and have more tennis professionals interested in competing.

The love for the natural beauty, first-class hotels and restaurants and the incomparable service in Los Cabos convinced some players to sign a contract to return next year before they had even left. Jut one more sign the tournament has grown by leaps and bounds.

¿Cómo percibes la cuarta edición del ATP Los Cabos?

¡Esperamos superar lo que se logró en 2018! Se estableció un récord de asistencia de 22 mil personas. Tenemos más planes para desarrollar en la comunidad, queremos hacer programas nuevos con los niños y jóvenes.

¿Qué eventos alrededor de la ATP se realizan para la afición local?

Para hacer partícipes a la sociedad de Los Cabos, hemos incluido conciertos, fiestas de clausura, cenas, eventos gastronómicos, fiestas en alberca y un día de convivio para niños tenistas, en todo este programa hay diferentes jugadores atendiendo los eventos.

How do you see the fourth edition of the ATP Los Cabos?

The bar has been set very high. We set an attendance record with almost 22,000 people. However, we hope to surpass what was achieved in 2018. In fact, we have our eye on this community. We want to do more with children and young people.

What events around the ATP are held for the local fans?

To involve more of the Los Cabos community, we have included events such as closing parties every night, plus dinners, brunch with the players, pool parties during the week and children’s day with the tennis professionals.

¿Cuál es el mayor atractivo para quienes deciden participar en Los Cabos ATP 250, en comparación con otros torneos?

El elemento diferenciador entre otros torneos es el destino. La misma semana que se juega el ATP250, se llevan a cabo el Washington 500 y el Kitzburg en Austria de 250 puntos. Sin embargo, de los 39 torneos mundiales de la categoría 250, el abierto Los Cabos es la cuarta bolsa más grande del mundo.

Otro factor importante es la conectividad aérea. Hay un torneo en Montreal después de las fechas del Abierto Los Cabos, y jugar en este destino permite a los tenistas estar más descansados, disfrutar de este destino y tomar un vuelo directo a su próxima competencia.

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de Los Cabos?

No sé por donde empezar, me gusta todo. El destino tiene muchos atractivos combinados con diferentes eventos. Además, hay opciones de entretenimiento alterno como golf, yoga, pesca, spas y una inigualable gastronomía.

Lo que más me ha impactado es la disposición de su gente. En realidad, trabajan por amor al destino.

What is the biggest attraction for those who decide to participate in Los Cabos ATP250 compared to other ATP events?

The difference between Los Cabos and other tournaments is the destination.

The same week the ATP250 is held, players can earn points at the Washington 500 and the Kitzburg in Austria. However, of the 39 world tournaments in the 250 categories, the Los Cabos Open has the fourth largest purse.

Another important factor is the flight connectivity. There is a tournament in Montreal after the Los Cabos Open. Competing in this destination allows the players to rest, enjoy Los Cabos and take a direct flight to their next competition.

What do you like most about Los Cabos?

I don’t know where to start. I like everything. The destination has several other events happening at the same time and there are alternative entertainment options such as golf, yoga, fishing, spas and an incredible restaurants.

What has impacted me the most is the attitude of the people. They are happy to work because they love the destination.

Clicerio Mercado

“

Todo trabajo es esclavizante, pero cuando hacemos las cosas que nos gustan, las cadenas desaparecen”.

Conversar con Clicerio Mercado, quien desde hace 20 años es el brazo derecho operativo del torneo de pesca más importante de Los Cabos, nos deja claro que aquellos que disfrutan apasionadamente de su trabajo podrán mirar hacia atrás sin arrepentimientos.

Clicerio comienza a trabajar a lado de Bob Bisbee en 1990 en la organización y gestión de permisos para los torneos de pesca.

Durante ese tiempo, su pasión por la pesca y el empeño por desarrollar eventos dignos del destino contribuyen en los cimientos que consolidaron el Bisbee’s Black & Blue.

Uno de los factores clave para la popularidad de este torneo, evidentemente, ha sido la bolsa de premios. Sin importar el número de embarcaciones inscritas, año con año, los premios van en aumento.

“

Curiosamente, el año 2000 rompe el récord mundial de embarcaciones registradas en un torneo con 239. Después, en el año 2006, Los Cabos se hace acreedor de un récord: La bolsa más grande en premios reconocida en la historia a nivel mundial con $4.5 millones de dólares.”

El torneo ha experimentado una serie de cambios a consecuencia de las modificaciones de reglas y adecuándose al tiempo presente. En las recientes competiciones la báscula abre en el horario de 2pm a 9pm, los tres días de pesca. Otra de las reglas es la puntualidad, por lo que llegar tarde, a pesar de tener un ejemplar más pesado, genera descalificación.

En un torneo el actor, director y productor Willie Aames pasó 21 horas intentando pescar un marlín. En este momento, las reglas del torneo no permitían que nadie más tomara la caña para ayudar. Chatting with someone who for 20 years has been the operative right arm of the most important fishing tournament in Los Cabos made it perfectly clear that those who passionately enjoy their work will be able to look back without regrets.

Clicerio began working with Bob Bisbee in 1990.

He organized and managed fishing tournament permits. During this time, his passion for fishing and developing events worthy of the destination where they were held contributed to the establishment of the Bisbee Black & Blue tournament.

One of the key factors for the popularity of this tournament has undoubtedly been the prize money. Regardless of the number of registered boats, the jackpots get bigger year after year.

Curiously, the year 2000 broke the world record for the number of vessels entered in a tournament with 239. However, in 2006, Los Cabos experienced a new record: The largest purse in history worldwide with 4.5 million dollars.”

The tournament has experienced a series of changes as the result of rule modifications and adapting to today’s challenges. In recent competitions, the scale has been open from 3:00 to 9:00pm for three days of fishing. Punctuality is one of the rules. Being late, despite having a heavier fish, results in disqualification.

Las tormentas también han estado entre los principales desafíos que el torneo ha enfrentado. El viento, las olas y los huracanes agregan adrenalina y emoción a un día de pesca.

Para sorpresa de todos, el torneo no se canceló en el 2014 tras el huracán Odile. El torneo del 2018 también fue uno de los más emocionantes, ya que se realizó durante las advertencias tropicales de Willa y Vicente. En esta edición se registraron 114 embarcaciones”.

La creciente popularidad de Los Cabos como la capital de la pesca deportiva, ha dado pie a torneos alternos más pequeños, cada uno con su propia personalidad.

El East Cape Offshore es un tipo de evento relajado como lo que solía ser la pesca antes en los Cabos. Los Cabos Offshore, que se realiza unos días antes de Black & Blue y que lleva el apodo de "Little Bisbee's", es un evento muy social y es preámbulo del último torneo de la serie, el torneo Black & Blue Marlin.

In one tournament, the actor, director and producer Willie Aames spent 21 hours fighting a marlin. At that time, the tournament rules did not allow anyone else to take the pole. The rules have been modified since, and although there is a rules committee, they present one of the biggest challenges for the tournament, since not all competitors are satisfied with the decisions.”

I believe that nobody breaks the rules intentionally. Many times, they get in trouble because they do not know the rules. Obviously, it is important that competitors become familiar with them.”

Storms have also been among the major challenges the tournament has faced. Wind, waves and hurricanes have a way of adding a lot more adrenaline and excitement to a day of fishing.

To everyone’s surprise, the tournament was not canceled in 2014 in the aftermath of hurricane Odile.

The 2018 tournament was also one of the most exciting since it was held during the Willa and Vicente tropical warnings. The tournament had 114 vessels registered.”

The growing popularity of the destination as the capital of sport fishing has given rise to smaller alternate tournaments, each with its own personality.

The Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore is a relaxed type of event much like how fishing used to be in Los Cabos. Bisbee’s Los Cabos Offshore, which takes place a few days before Bisbee’s Black & Blue and carries the nickname "Little Bisbee's," is a very social event and is the preamble to the last tournament of the series, the Bisbee’s Black & Blue Marlin Tournament.

racias al Bisbee´s Black and Blue Marlin Tournament, se ha logrado un importante crecimiento y proyección internacional, colocando a Los Cabos como un lugar notable para la práctica de la pesca deportiva. La cantidad de pescadores que vienen de todo el mundo ha aumentado considerablemente, y cadenas televisivas apuntan sus cámaras hacia este paraíso durante el mes de octubre cada año.

Desde los años 60´s Bob Bisbee visitaba Los Cabos, amigos cercanos lo invitaban a viajar en aviones privados, para 1973 al inaugurarse la carretera transpeninsular, inician sus recorridos en carro a lo largo de la península.

Era el año de 1982, cuando platicaba con amigos apasionados del mundo de la pesca, entre ellos el pionero en la industria de la hotelería de Baja California Sur, Don Luis Coppola, es entonces cuando surge la idea de realizar pequeños torneos, y cambia la sede de su empresa de combustible y tienda de pesca, de New Port Beach, California, a la punta más al sur de nuestro Estado.

Con su barco, su hijo Wayne de capitán y 5 embarcaciones, se organiza en el mes de mayo, el primer torneo de pesca deportiva de la región. Bob promovía los torneos e invitaba a pescadores y embarcaciones a participar. Para diciembre organizan otro torneo, éste ya con la participación de 27 embarcaciones. En mayo de 1983 otro y en diciembre otro, cada vez con más participantes, convirtiéndose en torneos divertidos y con premios que han llegado a alcanzar hasta millones de dólares.

Cuando se construye la marina de Cabo San Lucas, en 1987, empieza el arribo de una gran cantidad de botes, con ello los torneos fueron alcanzando gran fama en nuestros litorales y el extranjero.

En 1990 decide retirarse, sin embargo, el torneo continuó llevándose a cabo; en 1995 sus hijos Wayne y Patricia se encargan nuevamente del torneo.

The number of fishermen who come from around the world has markedly increased and television networks train their cameras on this paradise during the month of October every year.

Homenaje Póstumo a nuestro estimado Bob Bisbee: Entrevista realizada en Septiembre del año 2012 | Publicada en la edición #12 de Tendencia, El Arte de Viajar.

Bob Bisbee visited Cabo in the 60’s. Close friends brought him here in private jets. With the opening of the Trans-peninsular Highway in 1973, he started driving his car to Cabo.

In 1982, Bob was chatting with friends who were also passionate about the world of fishing, including a pioneer in the hospitality industry in Baja California Sur, Don Luis Coppola. It was then the idea of small sport fishing tournaments became a reality. Bob sold his fuel company and fishing store and moved from Newport Beach, California, to the southern tip of our state.

The first fishing tournament in the region was organized in the month of May and included Bob’s boat, with his son Wayne as the captain, and just five other boats. Bob promoted the tournaments and invited fishermen and boats to participate. A tournament the following December already had the participation of 27 boats. By May and December of 1983, there were more and more participants. The tournaments were fun and prizes have now reached as high as a million.

The construction of the Cabo San Lucas marina in 1987 signaled the arrival of a large number of boats and the tournaments became famous along our coasts and abroad.

Bob Bisbee decided to retire in 1990. However, the tournament continued and Bob’s children, Wayne and Patricia, have been in charge since 1995.

Alejandra Paulín y Maru Garzón han colaborado en diversos roles desde los inicios de Los Cabos International Film Festival. Con la experiencia de sus carreras personales, en esta entrevista nos abren un panorama más amplio de lo que este evento representa para el destino.

Two determined and charismatic women passionate for the cinematic arts came together to make a powerful statement in the seventh edition of the Los Cabos International Film Festival.

Los Cabos International Film Festival promueve el diálogo e intercambio cultural y comercial de la industria cinematográfica de Norteamérica con el resto del mundo. Además, es una plataforma para el constante crecimiento de la industria.

It was 2012 when Eduardo Sánchez Navarro, and various people from the artistic world, opened the window to talks about Los Cabos hosting a cultural and artistic event such as a film festival.

En el año 2012 en charlas entre Eduardo Sánchez Navarro con algunas personas del medio artístico, se evaluaron los escaparates que Los Cabos tenían para ser sede de un evento artístico y cultural como lo demanda un festival de cine.

Eduardo Sánchez Navarro y Alfonso Pasquel Barcenas worked together with the three levels of government, the National Council of Culture and FITURCA, now they are pillars of support for this event.

Así, Eduardo Sánchez Navarro y Alfonso Pasquel Bárcenas en conjunto con los tres niveles de gobierno, el Consejo Nacional de la Cultura y el Fideicomiso de Turismo de Los Cabos iniciaron este festival, convirtiéndose en los pilares.

However, the support of the entire hospitality community, the restaurateurs, the airport and the affection of the local people have contributed to the success of this festival.

The regional focus has set the festival apart from the beginning. In other words, access to dialogue in North America. No other festival in Mexico has that specific ability. Another unique factor is the business aspect of this platform. It attracts guests who do not attend the other festivals in Latin America. In addition, we are a Mexican event that has opened its doors to new ways of communicating and telling stories, such as television series.

Sin embargo, debemos destacar el apoyo de la comunidad hotelera y restaurantera, del Aeropuerto Internacional de Los Cabos, y el cariño de la gente local que han contribuido al éxito de este festival.

Uno de los diferenciadores ha sido su enfoque regional, es decir, acceder al diálogo en Norteamérica. Ningún otro festival en México tiene esa particularidad. Otro factor único es la zona de negocios de esta plataforma. Atrae invitados que no asisten al resto de festivales en América Latina.

Además, es un festival en México que ha abierto sus puertas hacia las nuevas formas de comunicar y de contar historias, como son las series de televisión.

Reconocen el potencial que tiene este territorio, lo cual engrandece el programa del festival y al mismo tiempo, la sociedad local participa en él.

Para ellos el mayor desafío que surge año tras año es lograr un compromiso desde y hacia la comunidad de Los Cabos.

Desde el principio, la misión fue crear un espacio para darle voz al talento cinematográfico de México, Estados Unidos y Canadá; que a su vez, vincule la industria y negocios del cine como producción y dirección. Que se otorguen recursos para proyectos, guiones y películas que se encuentren detenidas en diferentes etapas de producción.

One of the biggest challenges that continues to arise year after year is a achieving a commitment from and to the community of Los Cabos. We have the honor of holding this festival in a fantastic territory.

People have adopted it as their own.

From the beginning, the mission has been to create a space where the cinematographic talent of Mexico, the United States and Canada has a voice. One that also links the film industry with the money part of the business. Resources are necessary for production, direction, and scripts, as well as to complete projects that are in various stages of production.

Los Cabos International Film Festival gets bigger every year. That includes invited artists, producers, directors and assistant directors.

Every year, there is a greater commitment by the local people who sit down in the halls and theaters to enjoy the film premieres. The producers themselves have gained more confidence and Los Cabos is viewed as a versatile location for filming.

El festival se ha consolidado como un evento serio en un destino fantástico, donde los invitados que asisten demuestran su sorpresa y gratitud por el nivel de servicios turísticos. Sigue una línea editorial congruente con la curaduría cinematográfica, así como la selección misma de invitados, han sido los principales factores que los motiva a regresar y correr la voz.

The festival has been positioned as a serious event in a fantastic destination. A place where the guests who attend are surprised and grateful for the high level of tourist services. The Extreme Sailing Series has put Los Cabos on the map as a sailing destination.

The competition has been paired with other major international cities that are part of this event such us Muscat, Cardiff, Barcelona and San Diego.

“Being the iconic destination that it is, bringing the Extreme Sailing Series to these waters just makes sense. From my first trip to Los Cabos, I have been absolutely astonished by the service and views!

Los Cabos Tourism Board approached the competition for the first time in 2006, but it wasn’t until 2017 that the exciting Hydrofoil Catamaran stadium racing competition made its debut in Los Cabos.

In this sense, the landscapes, the archway, the waterfront, and the views from the hotels all blend well. They provide a great opportunity to give our brands exposure on the water.”

Las condiciones del viento suelen ser perfectas durante el mes del evento. Una de nuestras principales preocupaciones es asegurarnos de que venimos a Los Cabos durante la estación pico para alcanzar el viento. De hecho, el viento es lo único que no puedes controlar en esta competencia".

Como en cada evento realizado por primera vez se tiene cierta incertidumbre, especialmente con competencias de regata, que es un deporte extremo muy específico. Sin embargo, la comunidad local y los visitantes han llegado a apreciar y esperar el circuito de navegación extrema.

“Los resultados del evento que hicimos el primer año realmente nos puso en el mapa. Tuvimos mucho más compromiso este año después de que las personas ya conocían el concepto deportivo de Extreme Sailing Series, ¡velocidad, equipo y adrenalina!

Queremos asegurarnos de que la juventud esté presente en el itinerario. Algunas actividades para fomentar esta acción son un chat con los campeones y el recorrido en los catamaranes con los niños, enfocado especialmente para las escuelas de vela locales y entusiastas de ese deporte. Esto brinda la oportunidad de reunirse, tener un modelo a seguir en los atletas internacionales. En ambas actividades se permiten preguntas para aclarar dudas.

Wind conditions are usually perfect during the month of the event. Another key factor contributing to the success of Extreme Sailing Series in Los Cabos is the stadium sailing platform. Whether you watch from one of the different hotels, from a cruise boat or from the beach itself, you can see the competition. Any place is a great spot to be!

“Right now, it’s cold in Europe, so we need to cope with the seasons. Although this is winter in Los Cabos, we have great weather conditions. No wonder the sailors love being here.

One major concern is making sure we come to Los Cabos during the peak period to catch the wind. In fact, the wind is the one thing you cannot control in this competition.”

As with every first-time event, some uncertainty is expected, especially with sailing, which is still a niche sport.

However, the local community and visitors have grown to appreciate and anticipate the extreme sailing circuit.

“Delivering the event, the way we did the first year really put us on the map. After people witnessed the athleticism, the speed of our boats, the adrenaline and the whole package, we had a lot more engagement this year.”

We want to make sure young people are included.

Some activities that encourage their interaction are the Chat with Champions and the boat tour for kids. Focused specifically on local sailing schools, young sailors can meet and a model to follow and admire in the international athletes. Questions are encouraged.

Nos hemos dado cuenta del potencial del Extreme Sailing Series en Los Cabos, además de promoverlo entre los aficionados actuales del deporte, queremos crecer como espectáculo. En 2018 vimos más apoyo de la fraternidad de veleristas de San Diego, Ciudad de México, Puerto Vallarta y Acapulco. Están asistiendo a este evento y es genial para nosotros porque queremos interactuar con tantas comunidades como sea posible."

Los eventos de navegación implican muchos requisitos. Se revisa infraestructura, cuerdas, requisitos operacionales que no necesariamente se envían desde el otro lado del mundo. En este sentido, el evento también ha crecido para conectarse con proveedores locales.

We have realized that in order to grow the event, we must do more than just attract the current fan base. In 2018, we saw more support from the fraternity of sailors from San Diego, Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta, and Acapulco. They are participating and it’s great for us. We want to interact with as many communities as possible.”

Cada uno de ellos comparte el deseo de aportar a Los Cabos algo, por lo cual, desde la primera edición de Sabor a Cabo, el objetivo es contribuir con una donación. Este ha continuado como el motor del evento.

Sabor a Cabo came straight from the heart of visionaries such as Edith Jimenez, Carmen Carbajal, Jacobo Turquie, Alfonso Vazquez, Ulises Mendez, Denis Gabriel, Luis Alvarado, Jorge Viaña, Billy Lagarde and Giammarco Vela.

Each shares the desire to contribute something to Los Cabos. In fact, the objective from the very first event has been to give back to the community. That continues to be the motor of the event. The participation of the restaurants involved is a reflection of their commitment to the destination.

¿Por qué aceptas sumarte al proyecto Sabor a Cabo?

Sabor a Cabo es un evento anual y único en Los Cabos, está organizado 100% por empresas locales. Lo recaudado se destina a una asociación local como, por ejemplo, al Cuerpo de Bomberos de Cabo San Lucas o Cruz Roja, por nombrar algunas. La mesa directiva la integran empresarios con mucha pasión, que año tras año buscan mejorar para promover el destino a través de sus restaurantes.

Como presidente en turno en el año 2014, ¿cuál es el reto más grande al desarrollar este evento?

En lo personal, el reto más grande que enfrenté fue el huracán Odile. A mediados de septiembre nos sorprendió su impacto.

El evento ese año se enfocó en la recuperación del destino lo antes posible. Fue un reto y a la vez una fortaleza, todos queríamos salir lo más rápido de este bache y el trabajo en equipo contribuyó a ello. Con el evento Sabor a Cabo ese año se dio la bienvenida a la temporada alta y fue un parteaguas.

Why did you agree to join the Sabor a Cabo project?

Sabor a Cabo is an annual event and unique to Los Cabos in the sense that it is one hundred percent organized by locals. The proceeds go to local organizations such as the fire department or the Red Cross. The board of directors is made up of business people with a lot of passion. Year after year, they work to improve and promote the destination through their restaurants.

As the CANIRAC 2014 president, what is the biggest challenge in developing this event?

¿Cuál fue el mayor aprendizaje de liderar Sabor a Cabo 2014?

Definitivamente, ¡coordinar a tanta gente, a través de tantas variables y ver casi por arte de magia que el día del evento todo funciona! También, pude percibir la voluntad de los restauranteros y el amor que tienen por el destino. Se presentaron increíbles stands, todos buscábamos aportar un evento de talla internacional.

Personally, the biggest challenge I had to face was Hurricane Odile. In mid-September we were surprised by its impact and the event that year focused on recovering as soon as possible.

It was a challenge and at the same time, a strength. We all wanted to dig ourselves out of the hole as fast as possible.

Teamwork made that easier. The Sabor a Cabo event this year was celebrated during the tourism high season and marked a turning point in the recovery of the destination.

Which of your skills was in greatest’s demand when it came to be organizing this event?

I would say coordinating so many people through so many variables. It almost seemed that it was by magic that everything worked on the day of the event.

In addition, I could see the restaurateurs in motion.

I had to manage their strong will and the love they have for destiny. It led to incredible presentations and the desire to develop an event of international stature.

How does each restaurant participate?

Reinforcing the event objective, each restaurant that gets involved does so voluntarily by showing gratitude to a destination that offers an exclusive standard of living. Of course, in addition to the original partners, the event has attracted more sponsors such as AHLC, FITURCA, FITUES, and more.

¿En qué consiste la participación de cada restaurante?

Reforzando el objetivo inicial del evento, cada restaurante que se involucra en el proyecto voluntariamente dona lo que estará en su stand, esto en agradecimiento a un destino que nos ofrece un nivel de vida exclusivo. Por supuesto, además de los miembros de Canirac y casas vinícolas aliadas, Sabor a Cabo lo apoyan patrocinadores como: Asociación de Hoteles de Los Cabos, Fideicomiso de Turismo de Los Cabos y Fideicomiso de Turismo del Estado, entre otras importantes empresas.

¿Cuál ha sido la participación de otros sectores como DMC’s, Asociación de Hoteles y Fiturca?

La inversión en mercadotecnia que diversos sectores y patrocinadores aporta es sorprendente. Esto ha logrado posicionar el evento a nivel internacional.

A la par, se ha conseguido generar mayor permanencia en el destino con una serie de eventos que giran en torno a la gastronomía. Esta idea inició precisamente en el 2014, con una semana de eventos gastronómicos en las calles de San José del Cabo y experiencias culinarias en yate. Posteriormente, se suma Beer Fest.

También es importante mencionar Sabor a Cabo Rural.

Hace quince años, las cocinas del sur de California no eran tan conocidas como lo son hoy en día. Edith Jiménez, socia fundadora de Sabor a Cabo, emprendió la tarea de viajar a través de la sierra para completar una investigación exhaustiva sobre las raíces de los platos regionales.

Edith compartió su pasión por la auténtica comida local con los miembros de Canirac y Sabor a Cabo. Así nació Sabor a Cabo Rural en el año 2012.

Participan alrededor de 20 restaurantes, quienes tienen el reto de preparar recetas cocinadas de manera tradicional y con ingredientes locales. Además, de la música y el folclore que ensalzan ese domingo familiar.

What has been the participation of the DMC, Hotel Association, Concierges, and Fiturca?

The investment in marketing that various sectors and sponsors provide is incredible. This has elevated the event to the international level. At the same time, it has been possible to generate greater permanence in the destination with a series of events that revolve around gastronomy. This idea started in 2014 with a week of culinary events on the streets of San José del Cabo and in boat. The Beer Fest week were added later.

I should mention Sabor a Cabo Rural. The cuisines of Southern California were nowhere as well-known as they are today. Edith Jimenez, founding partner of Sabor a Cabo, undertook the task of traveling through the sierra to complete an exhaustive investigation into the roots of regional dishes.

Edith shared her passion for authentic local food with the members of Canirac and Sabor a Cabo. This is how Sabor a Cabo Rural was born in 2012. Participate around 20 restaurants, who have the challenge of prepare recipes cooked in a traditional manner and with local ingredients.

How does Sabor a Cabo change year after year?

In turn, each president influences the festival with his or her special touch. The president works with a team. The ideas contributed by each team enrich the festival and make Sabor a Cabo spectacularly dynamic. The reality is that the committee is not afraid to take risks. Everyone’s ideas are respected and no matter how innovative they may seem, they are analyzed to see if they can be transformed into reality. Support for all is very positive.

In your opinion, what has this culinary festival contributed to Los Cabos?

Sabor a Cabo is an event that includes all the cabeños, with many sponsors involved. The participation of the entire destination manages to present something memorable every year. It is absolutely the most spectacular gastronomic event in Mexico!

¿Cómo se transforma Sabor a Cabo año tras año?

El presidente en turno impregna al festival con un cariño y toque especial. Un presidente trabaja con su equipo y las ideas que aportan enriquecen el festival y esto ha generado un dinamismo espectacular. La realidad es que el comité es bastante arriesgado, se respetan las ideas de todos y por más innovadoras que parezcan son analizadas hasta ver su transformación hechas realidad. El apoyo hacia todos es muy positivo.

¿Cuál es la aportación más importante de Sabor a Cabo?

Es una fiesta de todos los cabeños, con muchos patrocinadores involucrados. La participación en conjunto como destino logra presentar algo espectacular cada año. ¡Absolutamente es el evento gastronómico más espectacular de México!

¿Qué significa para Sabor a Cabo recibir el reconocimiento a la Trayectoria Gastronómica en Culinary Awards Los Cabos?

Doce años se dice fácil. Como organizadores no nos dimos cuenta de cuán relevante ha sido Sabor a Cabo para el destino y la gente local. Recibir este reconocimiento fue un momento importante y nos cayó el veinte de lo que se ha logrado a través de él. Lo que inició para agradecer al destino con la gastronomía ha sumado casas vinícolas, destilados y música en un ambiente de fiesta.

What does it mean for Sabor a Cabo to receive recognition at the Culinary Awards Los Cabos?

Twelve years may not sound like a long time. However, we didn’t realize what this event meant to the destination and local residents. Receiving this recognition was a very important moment. What began as a contribution to the destination through gastronomy has added wineries, distilleries, and a festive setting filled with music.

La costa de Baja California Sur es famosa por las abundantes especies de peces, desde marlin, atún, pez vela, hasta el snapper y skipjack más pequeños, y por supuesto las famosas competencias de pesca deportiva como Bisbee’s.

Miles de turistas vienen a Baja California Sur solo para pescar, para divertirse y relajarse.

Muchas personas son atraídas para participar en los premios de las competencias de pesca deportiva. Probablemente, la competencia de Bisbee’s Black & Blue Tournament es la más famosa. Lo interesante es que existen más torneos para diferentes especies de peces y áreas frente a la costa de Baja California.

Estos torneos tienen un costo de inscripción, además, necesitas un bote y, por supuesto, el equipo de pesca. ¿Por qué tantos pescadores

The coast of Baja California Sur is famous for its abundant species of fish. There’s everything from marlin, tuna, and sailfish to the smaller snapper and skipjack. Of course, there are also the famous Bisbee’s Black & Blue Tournament.

Thousands of tourists come to Baja California Sur just to fish for fun and relaxation. But many people come to take part in the prize sport fishing competitions.

The Bisbee’s competition is probably the most famous. However, it is not the only sport fishing tournament. There are tournaments for many different fish species and areas off the coast of Baja California.

These tournaments can be costly to enter, and it’s not as easy as rowing a boat out on a lake. In addition to the entrance fees, you must bring your own sturdy boat or rent 50

“Pesco porque me encanta estar en el agua y todo el proceso que me acerca a la naturaleza, a la conexión del hombre con la caña de pescar, a la línea, al océano, a los peces. Como dice un refrán, muchas personas pasan la vida pescando sin darse cuenta de que no es a los peces a quienes persiguen".

Interviewing Donald Whittier, whose Wahoo Loco Sport Fishing team has won a cash prize in seven of the last nine Bisbee’s East Cape tuna division tournaments, taught us much about the excitement of sport fishing.

“I fish because I love being on the water.

The whole process brings me closer to nature. I love the connection of man to the fishing pole, line, ocean and the fish. The ability to see cradle to grave is very real and satisfying. As one saying goes, many people spend their lives fishing not realizing that it’s not the fish they are going after.”

Wahoo Loco regresó este año para ganar el premio mayor de atún por segunda vez, y luego se unió al "Million Club", que son los equipos que han ganado más de un millón en premios. El uso de la tecnología permite encontrar una bola de cebo o un enjambre de peces con forma que los peces pequeños producen cuando están amenazados por depredadores más grandes.

Márquelos en el GPS y regresé a la zona porque probablemente haya peces grandes cerca a causa de los peces pequeños. También los pescadores locales hacen una gran diferencia. Conocen los lugares probados y efectivos. Desde allí, puede utilizar sus estrategias para estar justo en el lugar. Sin embargo, es mucho más que encontrar el pez. Saber cómo atraparlos, combatirlos, embarcarlos, es toda una forma de arte.

Hay chicos aquí que pescan 340 días al año. Es una experiencia sólida y profesional. Es posible que tengas un bote de un millón de dólares y pesques unas pocas semanas al año, pero eso no te hace tan bueno como un chico que se despierta cada mañana y se gana la vida haciéndolo".

“El premio mayor de atún en Los Cabos se ha vuelto mucho más competitivo. Cuando empezamos, había menos de 100 equipos, ahora está empujando a 150, lo que hace una gran diferencia en poder ganar un torneo, especialmente con todos los barcos que van tras el mismo tipo de pez. Aunque también hay una división de pez dorado y wahoo”.

Algunas personas han dicho que la pesca deportiva es la causa de la disminución del número de peces, y que es necesario establecer más restricciones con respecto a la pesca deportiva y los torneos, ¿cuál es su opinión? ¿La pesca deportiva está causando una disminución en el número de peces?

Sin embargo, los pescadores deportivos no capturan suficiente pescado para impactar en el número de peces.

También, vale la pena señalar que los barcos de pesca deportiva tienen un límite diario regulado. Si los barcos de pesca deportiva siguen estos límites y regulaciones, como todos los que conozco, la pesca deportiva es una gota en el océano en comparación con los barcos de pesca comercial".

"¡Absolutamente no! todo lo que tiene que hacer es considerar el tonelaje que transportan los barcos de atún comerciales frente al puñado de peces que cada embarcación deportiva extrae del océano, no hay comparación. Las especies siempre necesitan ser reguladas, el número de peces se ve afectado por muchas cosas, aquí en Los Cabos es muy diferente a otras partes del mundo. Mantener un control sobre el número de peces es extremadamente importante para proteger las especies”.

La pesca deportiva en Los Cabos es una gran atracción. Se celebran varios torneos cada año. Todos los días, barcos dev diferentes tamaños, desde pangas con un solo motor hasta yates de lujo de 150 pies, zarpan hacia el Mar de Cortés y la costa del Océano Pacífico con pescadores entusiasmados, principiantes por primera vez y pescadores experimentados, de todo el mundo.

Todos con el sueño de atrapar al pez grande. ¡Con la abundancia de peces en el área, casi tienes garantizado atrapar algo!

“The Los Cabos tuna jackpot has become a hell of a lot more competitive. When we started, there were less than 100 teams. Now it’s pushing 150. That makes a huge difference in being able to win a tournament, especially with all the boats going after the same type of fish. It helps that there are Dorado and Wahoo divisions, as well.

Some people have said that sport fishing is the cause of declining fish numbers, and that more restrictions need to be put in place with regards to sport fishing and tournaments. What is your opinion?

Is sport fishing causing a decline in fish numbers?

“Absolutely not. All you must do is consider the tonnage the commercial tuna boats bring in versus the handful of fish that each sport vessel takes from the ocean. There’s no comparison. But species always need to be regulated because fish numbers are affected by many factors. Los Cabos is not like other parts of the world. Keeping tabs on fish numbers is extremely important in protecting our different species.

Wahoo Loco returned this year to win the tuna jackpot for the second time. The team is well on its way to joining the “Million Club.” Members have won more than $1 million in prize money. The team focuses on tuna and dorado and has done very well in these categories winning the Bisbee’s East Cape tournament tuna division twice. No other fishing team has accomplished that feat.

“On one hand, participating in this festival is about the money. On the other hand, it’s about competing.

The two previous years, I did not enter the East Cape tournament because there were very few tunas around.

I didn’t like the odds. Over the past nine years, I’ve competed in the Bisbee’s East Cape tournament seven times and have walked away with a winning check seven times. The high success rate is due to my team’s strategies and focus, among other things.”

“Absolutely, having modern technology to mark fish is important! What you’re marking is more about the bait or fish that the larger fish are eating. Using technology allows you to find a bait ball or ball shaped swarm of fish that small fish make when threatened by larger predators.

You mark it on the fish-finder GPS and keep coming back over the area because you know there are probably big fish nearby that have caused the smaller fish to swarm into a ball. Also, local experts make all the difference. They know the tried and true spots. From there, you can use technology to be right where you need to be once you’re on the fish. However, it’s so much more than just finding the fish. Knowing how to hook them, fight them, and boat them, is an art form. There are guys here who fish 340 days a year. That is solid, professional experience. You may own a million-dollar boat and fish a few weeks out of the year, but it doesn’t make you as good as a guy who wakes up every morning and makes his living doing it.”

However, sport fishermen do not catch enough fish to impact fish numbers. It is also worth noting that sport fishing boats have a regulated daily limit.

If the boats follow the limits and regulations, which everyone I know does, then sports fishing is a drop in the ocean compared to commercial fishing boats.”

Sport fishing in Los Cabos is big business. It’s more than the 10 or so tournaments held here each year. Everyday, boats of all sizes, from single engine pangas to 150 ft. luxury yachts, set sail into the Sea of Cortez and the coastal Pacific Ocean. There are excited fishermen aboard from first time beginners to experienced anglers. All dream of hooking the big one.

With the abundant fish in the area, you’re almost guaranteed to catch something!

a esencia humana de crear y apreciar toda forma de representación que asombra los sentidos es el reflejo de una palabra: Cultura. Cualquier manifestación del hombre, que realce los valores, forma las tradiciones y creencias de un pueblo, que perduran, trascienden y dan identidad a una civilización.

México como país tiene esas riquezas, creencias y pensamientos, en donde se fomenta el respeto a la igualdad y a las diferencias. Por eso los mexicanos somos un pueblo multicultural, con errores y aciertos, en la constante búsqueda de superación.

Creamos cultura con una sencilla pluma y unas hojas de papel, con un pincel en una caverna o en un lienzo, con el cincel y la piedra, con el barro, arcilla, vidrio y madera en manos del artesano, con la mímica y la actuación en el escenario de un teatro; con el sonido de las caracolas y el murmullo de las olas, con instrumentos musicales, con bailes y el folklore de los mariachis. Todo eso lo podemos apreciar en el arcoiris y prisma de colores que es México.

En el mundo de la música podemos citar nuestro Himno Nacional; el vals “Sobre las olas” de Juventino Rosas, que parece llevar el compás del oleaje, que baña las costas de nuestra península; el Huapango de Moncayo, con notas bellísimas de combinación prehispánica y folklore, así como la Marcha de Zacatecas. Escucharlas por medio de una orquesta sinfónica no tiene comparación. La creación de los trajes típicos de los 32 Estados de la República Mexicana describe con colores y dibujos a cada uno de estos lugares con los bailes de cada región y la música que les identifica.

he human essence of creating and the beauty of appreciating every form of representation that astonishes the senses is the definition of: Culture.

It is any manifestation of humans that enhances values and forms the traditions and beliefs of a people that endure, transcend and gives identity to a civilization. Mexico as a country has these riches, beliefs and ideas, where respect for equality and differences is fostered. That is why Mexicans are a multicultural people, with mistakes and successes, in the constant search for improvement.

We create culture with a simple pen and some sheets of paper, with a brush on a cave wall or on a canvas, with the chisel and the stone, with clay, glass, and wood in the hands of the craftsman, with mimicry and acting on the stage of a theater, with the sound of conches and the murmur of the waves, with musical instruments, dances and the folklore of the mariachis. We can see all that in the rainbow and prism of colors that is Mexico.

In the world of music, we can quote our National Anthem, the waltz On the waves by Juventino Rosas, which seems to carry the wave compass and bathes the coasts of our peninsula. In the Huapango de Moncayo, with beautiful notes of pre-Hispanic and folklore combination and in the March of Zacatecas.

Listening to them, performed by a symphony orchestra, is unparalleled. In the creation of the typical costumes of the 32 States of the Mexican Republic that describe each of these States with colors and drawings and in the dances of each region with the identifying music.

That range of colors, flavors, sounds, smells and landscapes, make Baja California Sur a huge receptacle of ideas and creations by Mexicans as well as visitors and migrants from other nationalities. Their inspiration shapes a culture that feeds us values and human warmth. As always, our territory, through our ethnic cultures and the fusion with universal ideas, makes up a country where the ingenuity and creativity of its people has no limits.

De ese abanico de colores, sabores, sonidos, olores y paisajes, Baja California Sur es un enorme receptáculo de ideas y creaciones tanto de mexicanos como de visitantes y migrantes de otras nacionalidades, que toman su inspiración para conformar una cultura que nos alimenta de valores y calidez humana. Desde siempre, nuestro territorio, a través de las culturas étnicas y la fusión de ideas universales, conforman un país donde el ingenio y la creatividad de su gente no tiene límites.

La península sudcaliforniana en particular, es un lugar visitado por representantes de la cultura que no solamente vienen de viaje de placer sino a interpretar su música, danza y arte. También existe una comunidad de artistas, músicos creativos, compositores, bailarines, escritores, escultores, pintores, entre otros, que han hecho de esta península su hogar.

Con palabras que denotan su conocimiento, iniciamos nuestra plática, donde nos habla con respeto y entusiasmo sobre su profesión. Pedro fue nombrado Sommelier del Año 2000 por la Asociación Mexicana de Sommeliers.

Quizá sea una de las profesiones más antiguas del mundo, y es hoy de la más codiciadas, especializadas y reconocidas. El “sommier” o “sommerier”, del francés medieval, era el encargado de cuidar y vigilar de las cargas más importantes que transportaban los animales, entre las cuales se encontraba el vino. Luego, él mismo se supervisaba la descarga y el control de que todo llegara en correcto estado. Posteriormente, se encargó únicamente del transporte del vino. Ese término con el transcurrir del tiempo y las deformaciones típicas del lenguaje, devino en el actual término “sommelier”.

Perhaps one of the world’s oldest professions, being a sommelier today is a coveted, specialized and recognized position. The "sommier" or "sommerier" in medieval France was the person in charge of watching over the most important cargo that animals carried, among which was the wine. Then, the sommier himself supervised the unloading and made sure that everything arrived in an undamaged state. Subsequently, he was solely responsible for transporting the wine. With the passage of time and the typical distortion of language, that term became the current word “sommelier.”

México cumple 25 años de incursionar en la somelería gracias a los cursos sobre educación del vino iniciados por Juan Muñoz Ramos en 1992. Está capacitación consiste en conocimientos acerca de la tierra de cultivo, climas, zonas de producción, cepas y sobre todo formas de consumo del vino. Posteriormente, sus alumnos, entre ellos, Pedro Poncelis continuaron capacitando en la materia.

Mexico is celebrating 25 years of wine appreciation.

The courses and graduates taught by Juan Muñoz Ramos beginning in 1992 played a major role in absorbing the vast knowledge of the land, climates, areas of production, grapes and especially the forms of wine consumption. As a result, his students, including Pedro Poncelis, have continued to teach the subject.

A los 75 años y con 52 años en la industria del vino, Pedro nos explica que el mundo del vino es tan extenso, que uno no termina de aprender.

At 75 years of age and with 52 years in the wine industry, Pedro Poncelis explained that the world of wine is so vast that one never stops learning.

“Soy ingeniero químico de profesión, no obstante, he estudiado más de vinos que de ingeniería. Y no he dejado de aprender. Al principio era abstemio… se requiere entrenar al paladar y los sentidos para emprendere en esta industria”.

“I am a chemical engineer by profession, however, I have studied more wine than engineering. And I’ve never stopped learning. At first I was abstemious ... it requires training the palate and the senses to venture into this industry.”

“Cualquiera que desee sobresalir en este medio, debe estar convencido sobre esta profesión. Después de esa determinación, es estudio, estudio, estudio. Mucho de lectura y mucho estudio.

Existen muy buenas universidades en México a nivel de Europa, pero la preparación es permanente. ¡Tienes que tomar cursos avanzados, viajar, asistir a catas y beber vino!”

Don Poncelis es reconocido por hacer la cava más grande de América Latina en el restaurante Au Pied De Cochon ubicado en el Hotel Presidente Intercontinental Polanco en la Ciudad de México. Tiene una capacidad de 50 mil a 100 mil botellas con una variedad de 2,500 etiquetas de 20 países diferentes.

Pedro destaca tres momentos en su vida como los más importantes de su carrera:

“Anyone who wants to excel in this environment must really want to be a sommelier. After that it is study, study, study ... A lot of reading and a lot of study. There are very good universities in Mexico equal to a European level, but it is not enough to just be there. You have to take advanced courses, travel, attend tastings and drink wine!”

Don Poncelis is recognized for having created the largest wine cellar in Latin America: Au Pied De Cochon at the Presidente Intercontinental Polanco Hotel in Mexico. The cellar has the capacity for 50,000 to 100,000 bottles and holds 2500 labels from 20 different countries.

However, there are three moments in his life that stand out as the most important in his career.

“El primer momento que recuerdo, fue ser seleccionado a nivel nacional para representar a México en la competencia Grand Prix Sopexa en Francia 1997.

Quedé entre los 10 finalistas, estamos hablando de los mejores del mundo.

Acerté 4 de 5 vinos en cata a ciegas.

“The first moment I remember was having been selected to represent Mexico at the 1997 Sopexa Grand Prix wine competition in France. I did not win, but I was among the 10 finalists. We are talking about the best in the world here. I identified 4 of 5 wines tasted in succession through blind tasting.”

Al formar parte de Worldwide Sommelier Association, en 1998 me seleccionaron nuevamente para competir en Viena, Austria. Tampoco gané.

Considero que vivir esa experiencia y el conocimiento fueron el mayor premio. Esa fue mi última participación en concursos internacionales, decidí entonces aportar mis conocimientos a la juventud a través de la enseñanza.

In 1998, as part of the International Sommeleria Association, Don Poncelis was selected to compete in Vienna, Austria. “I did not win there either. However, the experience and knowledge I acquired were the greatest reward. This was my last international competition and I decided to contribute my knowledge to young people through teaching.

El tercer momento llegó en el 2000 cuando me invitaron a participar como jurado por primera vez en Toronto, Canada. Son experiencias inolvidables que llevaré en la memoria para siempre.”

The third moment came in 2000. “I was invited to participate on a jury for the first time in Toronto, Canada. It was another unforgettable experience that I will carry in my memory forever.”

El vino mexicano ha tardado en desarrollarse. El mayor crecimiento ocurrió en los años 80 y 90. Las ventas comerciales elevaron su perfil, permitieron la competitividad internacional y crearon el producto que disfrutamos hoy.

“Conozco el maravilloso mundo del vino mexicano desde hace 52 años.

Todo comenzó cuando trabajé para la empresa transnacional Seagrams. En ese momento, Santo Tomás, L'acceto, Domec y Casa Madero eran los únicos existentes en el mercado.

Hoy en día, se produce vino en 10 estados de la República Mexicana y existen más de 1000 marcas, entre pequeñas, medianas y grandes vinícolas.

El vino mexicano ha participado en cata a ciegas en distintos lugares del mundo y de este modo ha ganado reconocimiento mundial.”

Mexican wine has been slow to develop. The greatest growth happened in the 80's and 90's. Commercial sales raised its profile, allowed international competitiveness and created the product we enjoy today.

“I have known the wonderful world of Mexican wine for 52 years. It all began when I worked for the transnational company Seagrams. At that time Santo Tomás, L'acceto, Domec and Casa Madero were the only existing markets.

Today, wine is produced in 10 states of the republic and there are more than 1000 Mexican brands offered by small, medium and large wine producers.

Mexican wine has participated in blind tasting competitions in different parts of the world and has gained worldwide recognition.”

Sportfishing IN LOS CABOS

l mes de junio del presente año dio inicio la ola de calor con cielos despejados y soleados en Baja California Sur (BCS), el mes también coincidió con un suceso triste para la pesca deportiva, el fallecimiento de Bob Bisbee1 quien fuera el pionero del torneo internacional Bisbee’s, Black & Blue, el cual desde 1982 ha venido dinamizando Los Cabos. Sin lugar a dudas, el legado de dicho personaje seguirá materializándose año con año, mientras la pesca deportiva continúa afianzándose como una de las actividades más importantes de la entidad, convendría por tanto hacer un breve recorrido histórico de la misma.

une began hot this year with clear, sunny skies in Baja California Sur (BCS). The month also coincided with a sad event for sport fishing, the death of Bob Bisbee, founder of the international tournament Bisbee's Black & Blue. The tournament has been energizing Los Cabos since 1982. No doubt the legacy of this global personality will continue to be part of the competition for years to come.

La pesca contemporánea en Los Cabos se podría ubicar a inicio del siglo XX, con la Compañía de Productos Marinos, S.A., cuyo socio mayoritario fue Carlos E. Berstein e inició sus operaciones en Cabo San Lucas (1925) en el barco Calmex; “su tripulación estaba integrada por pescadores japoneses, estadunidenses y europeos naturalizados en Estados Unidos (EE.UU). Los insumos para la producción se traían de San Diego, hacia donde también se enviaba el producto enlatado, atún en aceite y salmuera, aun sin etiquetar ” (González, 2002:487). Es sabido que un incendio en el área de máquinas, provocó el hundimiento en 1928 lo que aceleró la construcción de la nueva planta empacadora.

La empresa posteriormente fue comprada por Elías Pando, grupo dedicado al negocio de comestibles, vinos y conservas de pescado2. Posteriormente, un nuevo escenario económico en BCS generó el cierre de la empresa en 1979, la liquidación de los empleados propició que estos consideraran a la pesca como una noble tradición que conservar, pero ahora con otros tintes.

A partir de ese momento algunos hoteleros fomentaron la pesca deportiva en sus negocios, como fue el caso de la familia Parr y Luis Bulnes, quienes fueron personajes importantes del despunte. También las familias de pescadores oriundas harían lo propio, convirtiendo a Los Cabos en un destino icónico en México. Cabe decir que el trayecto para que esto último se efectuara está lleno de historias de vida: como el empleado que en los setenta al cerrar la empacadora pensó cómo sostendría a su familia encontrando en la pesca deportiva una vía; o como aquel joven en los ochenta que poseía una panga, y en alguna de sus salidas fue abordado por un turista extranjero que le preguntó cuánto le cobraba por llevarlo a pescar3.

Cabe decir que la pesca deportiva se puede practicar durante casi todo el año, sin embargo, entre julio a febrero es idónea. Brinda momentos memorables de todos aquellos pescadores que deseen obtener alguno de los premios importantes de torneos, o bien, pescar especímenes inolvidables de mas de 900 libras, también sentir la emoción por el chillido del carrete y la lucha posterior desde la silla de peleo con algún pez espada.

Sport fishing is one of the most important economic and recreational activities in Baja. As a result, a brief historical tour could be of value.

The contemporary method of fishing in Los Cabos can be traced back to the beginning of the 20th century and Compañia de Productos Marinos, S.A. Carlos E. Berstein was the majority shareholder. He began operations in Cabo San Lucas in 1925 on the ship Calmex. “His crew was made up of Japanese, American and European fishermen naturalized in the United States (USA). The materials for the production were brought from San Diego, where the canned product was also sent, even before labeling, which consisted of tuna in oil and brine.” (Gonzalez, 2002: 487). Records show that a machine room fire caused the collapse of business on the ship in 1928. The fire accelerated the construction of the new packing plant on land. The Elias Pando group eventually purchased the company. Elias Pando was dedicated to the business of groceries, wine and canned fish. Subsequent economic conditions in BCS led to the closure of the company in 1979. When the employees lost their jobs, they began to see fishing as a noble tradition, but now through different color glasses.

That was the moment when hoteliers began to include sport fishing in their business plans. The Parr family and Luis Bulnes are excellent examples. Both played important roles in the introduction of sport fishing. The families of native fishermen did the same, turning Los Cabos into an iconic destination in Mexico. It must be said that the journey for residents is full of life stories. For example, the employee who, in the seventies when the packing plant was closing, thought about how he would support his family and decided to find a way to get into the sport fishing business. Or, the young man who owned a panga in the 80s. A tourist approached him one day and asked how much the boat owner would charge to take him fishing.

It’s a fact that sport fishing can happen almost year round. Even so, the best times are from July to February. Sport fishing here provides memorable moments for all the fishermen who are looking to win important tournament prizes, or catch one of the unbelievable specimens that can weigh more than 900 pounds. There are those who simply want to enjoy the emotions created by the squeal of the reel and the duel from the chair with a hard fighting swordfish.

Los cambios que últimamente ha sufrido el medio ambiente en el mundo son un tema de interés para dicha actividad. Por ello, hoy día se puede afirmar que en Los Cabos existe un compromiso entre los pescadores acreditados de pesca deportiva y el medio ambiente: por ejemplo, se procura que ahora las líneas y anzuelos sean biodegradables, y no se usa carnada artificial.

Acerca del futuro que se visualiza para la pesca deportiva, se puede decir que es prometedor, sobre todo si se practica con la entrega y la pasión que caracteriza a Los Cabos conocido como “La Capital Mundial del Marlín”, destino que ofrece una cálida bienvenida a quienes deseen experimentar tal experiencia.

In 1765, at the Rue du Poulies in Paris, a chef named Dossier Boulanger opened the first restaurant in the world.

To announce the opening, he hung a sign that said in vulgar Latin: Veinte ad me omnes qui stomacho laboratis et ego restaurabo vos "Come to me, tired stomach man, and I will restore you."

Hablar de la gastronomía mexicana es hacer un viaje en el tiempo y honrar más de mil años de historia para aprender acerca de los elementos culturales. Tal es el caso por lo que la UNESCO nombró a la gastronomía mexicana “Patrimonio Cultural Intangible de la Humanidad”.

El visionario director Terry Gilliam recibió el tributo Exceptional Contribution to Cinema History, mientras que el director del Festival Internacional de Cine de Toronto, Piers Handling, obtuvo el reconocimiento Outstanding Work In The Film Industry.

Spike Lee, director de Blackkklansman, película de la gala de clausura, fue galardonado con el Exceptional Contribution to Cinema History.

Adam Driver recibió el reconocimiento Outstanding Work in Cinema durante la séptima edición del Festival de Cine de Los Cabos.

Además, gracias a los aliados del Festival fue posible otorgar alrededor de $7’000,000 MXN en premios.

In this her third book, the author addresses trade as a study of tourism in Baja California Sur, specifically, La Paz.

osa Maria Mendoza Salgado, author and contributor to TENDENCIA, graduated as preschool teacher from the Urban Normal School Professor Domingo Carballo Felix in La Paz. Because of her vocation and love for her land, she has been an independent cultural promoter spreading Mexican customs and traditions. A founder of the Board of Culture of Baja California Sur A.C. Rosa Maria is currently a member of California Californios Friends of History and Local Studies A.C, and a correspondent member of the Mexican Culture Seminar in La Paz.

With interesting and specific details such as the preparation process of the panocha or piloncillo, as well as the description of characters from her personal experience.

She is originally from La Paz, so Rosa Maria adds an emotional value to her book.

In an entertaining and cheerful way, the author takes the reader through history from 1697 to 2016. The narrative is presented from the perspective of an economist that is characteristic of the author. In her own words, “the chronicler does not replace the historian, rather sustains the facts.”

“Las pinturas rupestres que están en San Francisco de la Sierra fueron dadas a conocer al mundo en el año de 1962 mediante un reportaje que una revista le publicó a Erle Stanley Gardner, un escritor americano de novelas de misterio. A partir de esa fecha, las figuras monumentales de hombres y animales coloreados en rojo y negro fueron mostradas al planeta como un Gran Mural Prehistórico, plasmado por desconocidos en cuevas y farallones de la sierra central peninsular.

The cave paintings in the San Francisco de la Sierra were made known to the world in the year 1962 through an article published in a magazine by Erle Stanley Gardner, an American writer of mystery novels. From that date on, the monumental figures of men and animals colored red and black were known to the world as the Great Prehistoric Murals. They were created by strangers in caves and on cliffs of the central mountains of the peninsula.

The identity of the artists remains a mystery. When the Jesuit missionaries arrived in 1697, the indigenous Cochimies knew nothing of the painters. They referred to them as "giants" who had come from the north at a time even the grandparents of their grandparents could not identify. Scholars theorize that the artists came from a culture superior to the Cochimies, who the Europeans believed were not able to build the scaffolds that the great mural required or even the process required to attack that monumental work.

Días después de la conferencia, junto a una fogata al pie del Picacho de Santa Clara a donde habíamos ido a buscar una manada de burros cimarrones, "El Cantino" me dijo: 76

La identidad de los artistas sigue en el misterio. Cuando llegaron a la zona los misioneros jesuitas en 1697, los cochimíes de la época nada sabían de los pintores, y se referían a ellos como “gigantes” que habían llegado del norte, en fechas que ni los abuelos de sus abuelos podían precisar. Los estudiosos suponen que los artistas aquellos provenían de una cultura superior a los cochimíes, que a juicio de los europeos eran poco aptos para construir los andamios que precisó el gran mural, y aún para procesar las pinturas requeridas para atacar aquella obra monumental”.

El caso es que le enseñaron las pinturas allá abajo en el arroyo y la Cueva del Ratón por acá arriba, pero yo no quise llevarlo a mi cueva: una no muy grande en la entrada, pero sí muy honda en la que una vez me encontré una güesa de gente muy grande, encamisado y con algunas cosas al lado.

“The man who got off the helicopter in San Francisquito saying that he had been to the paintings did not sit well with me because of the way some foreigners and Mexicans carry themselves. They act as if they deserved it, as if we the mountain dwellers owed them something. But what do I know? The thing is, he knew about the paintings down there by the stream and the Mouse Cave up here, but I did not want to take him to my cave. The entrance is not big, but the cave is very deep. It is where I once found a painting of very large people, bordered by other objects on the sides.

The paintings were not about to turn to dust, so I slowed down to examine everything. They were massive. I left the cave and blocked the entrance with stones, so no one would find it. I wanted it for myself.

Understand? Now that I know you, and because I like you, I'm going to show it to you. Okay?

Todo lo vi y lo tenté despacito, no se fueran a hacer polvo aquellas cosas; pero estaban macizas. Salí de la cueva y rellené la entrada con piedras para que nadie la encontrara; la quería para mí nomás. ¿Cómo ves? Ahora que te conozco… y porque me caes bien, te voy a llevar para enseñártela, ¿quieres?

También estaba un arco corto de hueso amarillo, parecido al que usaban en el Ártico los inuik. No escarbé ni moví nada. Dejamos todo como estaba, “por respeto”, dijo mi guía.

l municipio de Comondú es un crisol de diversas tradiciones alimentarias, síntesis de una larga historia de colonizaciones, desde la etapa misional, heredera de los oasis sudcalifornianos, hasta la comida de las familias colonizadoras del valle agrícola de Santo Domingo, a mediados del siglo XX.

En panorámica, se pueden advertir estas huellas culinarias por los microambientes en que se produjo la ocupación del territorio. El oasis, la sierra, el valle y la costa e islas aportaron los ingredientes culturales al tipo de comida que consumieron nuestros antepasados.

El otro ingrediente derivó del contacto con la otra banda, el interior de la república, a través del comercio y el abasto.

Semillas de mezquite, agaves, pitahaya, nopal, semillas de San Miguel o teddá, yuca, medesá, dipuá o palo verde, guiguil o cereza, otatave o uva, zalate o higo, gokió o palo blanco, jícama, camote y muchos otros. Los cárnidos se obtenían de la caza del borrego cimarrón, venado bura, berrendo, codorniz, lince, murciélago, conejo, ardilla, rata, coyote, zorro, mapache, puma, topo, gato montés, babisuri o gato de cola anillada, zorrillo manchado.

Natural Foods

Like the hunter-gatherer Californios Indians, the hunting of birds, rabbits, deer, pronghorn antelopes and other wildlife, combined with the collection of vegetables, strawberries and roots, was practiced by the inhabitants of the region in times of food shortages.

Prehistoric native tribes took advantage of the natural resources by totally adaptation to the environment. The seasons determined their mobility and available resources.

They gathered mesquite seeds, agaves, pitahaya, cactus, San Miguel or tedda seeds, yucca, medesa, dipua or palo verde, guiguil or cherry, otatave or grape, zalate or fig, gokio or palo blanco, jicama, sweet potato and many others. Protein and hides were obtained from hunting bighorn sheep, mule deer, pronghorn, quail, lynx, bat, rabbit, squirrel, rat, coyote, fox, raccoon, cougar, mole, wildcat, babisuri or ringed tail cat, and spotted skunk.

Marine animals also contributed to the indigenous diet. Natives took advantage of turtles, sea lions, octopus, any species of fish and mollusks, even beached whales.

Los animales marinos también contribuyeron a la dieta indígena, aprovechaban las ballenas varadas, las tortugas, los lobos marinos, pulpos, cualquier especie de peces y moluscos.

El uso o reuso de desechos, que los españoles llamaron doble cosecha, como la orina y el excremento se interpreta asociado a costumbres rituales y curativas (Aschmann, 1959:58). Los antiguos californios por lo general consumían alimentos bajo el sistema de tatema, práctica aún utilizada en diversos platillos de Comondú y Loreto.

ituado en las inmediaciones del hermoso Estado de Baja California Sur, frente al Golfo de California y acorazado por la majestuosa Sierra de La Giganta, se encuentra un lugar maravilloso de clima cálido y colmado de riquezas naturales, tal pareciera que la madre naturaleza hiciera una muestra de paisajes, flora y fauna para el deleite de los que vivimos aquí, y nos comprometiera a conservarlos para poder mostrarlos a cada uno de nuestros visitantes.

Loreto mantiene ese tinte pueblerino, seguro y tranquilo, donde tan solo una caminata por su centro histórico o alguna actividad terrestre o acuática, dejaran a todos los miembros de la familia una experiencia especial de por vida y la necesidad de volver lo más pronto posible, y por si fuera poco, su gastronomía tiene una receta icónica en la Península, la Almeja Chocolata, platillo que desde nuestros cavernícolas ancestros hasta el día de hoy es la comida tradicional; seguimos cocinándola con la milenaria receta, la famosa Tatema de Almeja.

Loreto tiene sus inicios desde la edad primitiva con los asentamientos humanos de las tribus llamadas Cochimíes, Pericúes y Guaycuras, mismos que dejaron huella de su paso en varios petrograbados en diferentes rincones de La Giganta, llamada así por la similitud de sus riscos con perfiles de rostros humanos, y que nos transmitieron el profundo amor y respeto a esta tierra sin igual.

Nos da mucho gusto que estas letras lleguen hasta ustedes, para que en un futuro próximo puedan acompañaros y vivir la Magia de Loreto.

El año de 1697 marcaría un parteaguas en la historia, cuando el Padre Juan María de Salvatierra desembarcara justo en nuestras playas para iniciar la Evangelización Jesuita y fundación del Camino Real Misionero, una serie de más de 40 Misiones que se extendieran hasta lo que hoy se conoce como Sonoma, California y que indicara lo inicios colonizadores de toda la Península y sus diferentes poblados, hoy ciudades.

Loreto es mucho más que historia, nuestras aguas son un Parque Nacional Marino conformado por 5 islas que, en 1997, UNESCO declarara Patrimonio de la Humanidad por su flora y fauna endémica; sus profundidades fueron bautizadas por el famoso buzo francés Jaques Cousteau como la Entrada Natural al Acuario más grande del Mundo. Estas aguas por sus características sin igual son el único Santuario Natural de la Ballena Azul, el mamífero más grande del planeta y hogar de más de 270 de las 400 especies marinas que habitan el Golfo de California.

Loreto had its beginnings in the primitive ages. The first human settlers were tribes called Cochimies, Pericues and Guaycuras. They left their mark on the land with several petroglyphs in different corners of La Giganta. The paintings on the cliffs are similar and contain profiles of human faces. They are one of the reasons we have such a deep love and respect for this land.

The sea represents the year 1697. That is when Father Juan María de Salvatierra stepped off a boat onto our beach and began the Jesuit Evangelization and the founding of the Camino Real Misionero. The series of more than 40 missions extended to what today is Sonoma, California. The arrival of Father Juan marked the beginning of colonization of the entire peninsula and built the foundation for the towns and cities of today.

There’s much more to Loreto than history. The nearby sea is a National Marine Park formed by five islands and declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1997 for the endemic flora and fauna. The famous French diver, Jacques Cousteau, called the waters off Loreto the natural entrance to the largest aquarium in the world. Due to their unparalleled characteristics, the waters off Loreto contain the only Blue Whale Sanctuary, the largest mammal on the planet, as well as more than 260 of 400 marine species that inhabit the Gulf of California.

ocated in the beautiful State of Baja California Sur, facing the Gulf of California and sheltered by the majestic Sierra de La Giganta, is a wonderful place with a warm climate and bountiful natural riches. It may seem like Mother Nature created a model of perfect landscapes, flora and fauna for the delight of those who live here. Loreto maintains that small-town feel, safe and quiet. Just a walk through the historic center or some land or aquatic activity is a special experience and one that all members of a family will remember for life. The Chocolata Clam is a dish that has been enjoyed from cavemen on the peninsula to locals and visitors today. The traditional food is prepared with the same millenary recipe, the famous Tatema of Clam.

CERCA DE CATAVIÑA, MILES DE INMENSAS ROCAS REDONDAS TRANSFORMAN EL PAISAJE EN UN ESPECTACULAR JARDÍN. Cirios y plantas de cactus brotan como una cuña de la redondez de las rocas luchando por crecer hacia arriba, creando una increíble vista. Entre las plantas originarias de la península que se distinguen por su singular rareza, está la “pata de elefante”, cuyas raíces brotan en los lugares más insospechados. Este fascinante árbol es nativo de la península. Tiene un voluminoso tronco rugoso y grisáceo, como enorme pata de elefante.

De ahí viene su nombre y en lo alto brotan unas larguísimas ramas verdes de caída deforme y ondulante que bien pueden recordarnos la trompa del elefante.

Cuando llueve, lo que es extraño en estas tierras, le crecen finas ramas hasta el suelo, pero en tiempo seco sus brazos se tuercen como garras contra el medio ambiente.

IMMENSE ROCKS AND BOULDERS TRANSFORM THE LANDSCAPE INTO A SPECTACULAR ROCK GARDEN NEAR CATAVIÑA. Cirio and cactus plants are wedged among the boulders, battling their way upward, creating an incredible appearance. Every crack becomes a foothold for their persistent roots.

Scattered among these plants is one of the peninsulas botanical oddities, the elephant tree. Which shoots out in unexpected places. This fascinating tree is native to the region. Its grayish, spongy trunk sends out thick clubby branches resembling an elephant trunk. When it rains the trunk swells, but in the dry season the gnarled limbs seem to claw the environment.

Don Guillermo Salas Peyró es uno de los personajes mas importantes de la historia radiofónica en México y América Latina. Nace en Ciudad Lerdo, Durango, el 23 de marzo de 1919, hijo de Don Dionisio Salas Castañeda, quien se dedicaba a las tareas agrícolas, y de doña María Peyró de Salas.

Don Guillermo Salas Peyro is one of the most important figures in the history of radio in Mexico and Latin America.

He was born in Ciudad Lerdo, Durango on March 23, 1919; his father Don Dionisio Salas Castañeda, who was engaged in agricultural, and his mother Ms. María Peyro de Salas.

De la revolución mexicana a revolucionar la radio en México En 1929, en busca de nuevos y mejores horizontes, Don Dionisio y su joven familia (esposa y cinco hijos, el menor de los cuales era nuestro biografiado), se trasladan a la Ciudad de México para establecerse definitivamente en la capital, cambiando así el destino de Guillermo Salas Peyró para siempre.

A los 19 años, la recomendación de un amigo de su padre le permitió unirse a la estación más importante de México: La XEW, “La Voz de La América Latina”, perteneciente a Don Emilio Azcárraga Vidaurreta. Ingresó en el modesto puesto de auxiliar de la oficina de Don Emilio, y más pronto de lo que cualquiera hubiera pensado, empezó a trabajar en la dirección artística como organizador de programas, entrando en contacto con las estrellas del momento como Agustín Lara, Pedro Vargas, Las Hermanas Águila, Miguel Aceves Mejía, Cri Cri, entre otros, quienes se ponían directamente de acuerdo con Don Guillermo para conocer el turno de su número artístico en la programación.

From the Mexican Revolution to revolutionizing radio in Mexico

In search of new and better horizons, Don Dionisio and his young family (wife and five children, the youngest of whom was a biographer), moved to Mexico City in 1929 to settle in the capital. The move changed the direction of Guillermo Salas Peyro’s life forever.

At age 19, a recommendation from a friend of his father allowed him to join the most important radio station in Mexico, The XEW. “The Voice of Latin America” was owned by Don Emilio Azcarraga Vidaurreta.

Más adelante, tuvo la oportunidad de hacer radio en una estación en Argentina llamada Radio El Mundo, y en 1946 estuvo becado en la BBC en Londres. Su carrera fue en aumento hasta ser socio y director general del Núcleo Radio Mil, que él fue construyendo a lo largo de los años cincuenta.

Don Guillermo started in a modest assistant position in Don Emilio's office. Sooner than anyone could have imagined, he went to work as a program organizer where he met the stars of the moment such as Agustin Lara, Pedro Vargas, The Eagle Sisters, Miguel Aceves Mejía, Cri Cri and many more who completely agreed with Don Guillermo and his changes to the station’s artistic direction.

Sobresale un logro que fue parteaguas en la forma de hacer radio en México: introducir y poner en marcha la programación musical utilizando música grabada en vez de artistas en vivo. A esta forma de operar se le conoció como la radio disquera y sus fundamentos se siguen utilizando hasta la fecha.

Don Guillermo later had an opportunity to work at a radio station in Argentina called Radio El Mundo and in 1946, he received a scholarship at the BBC in London. His career continued to progress through the 1950s when he became a partner and general manager of the Radio Mil Nucleo.

Don Guillermo Salas Peyró, visitante de la península, vio la oportunidad y decidió invertir en el sur de la península como desarrollador inmobiliario.

Más tarde, cambiaría la historia de nuevo, esta vez en el joven Municipio de Los Cabos fundando la primera estación de radio: XHSJS Cabo Mil 96.3 F.M., que inició operaciones en noviembre de 1988.

A watershed moment in radio in Mexico was the introduction of programming using recorded music instead of live artists. This way of operating became the normal method of doing business at radio stations and its fundamentals are still in use today.

Don Guillermo Salas Peyro, a visitor to the peninsula, recognized an opportunity and decided to invest in the southern part as a real estate developer. Later on he would change the story again, this time in the young municipality of Los Cabos where he started the first radio station, XHSJS Cabo Mil 96.3 F.M., in November 1988.

Asimismo, para la puesta en marcha de la estación, la tarea más difícil se realizó días antes y consistió en montar el transmisor que pesaba más de una tonelada en la zona de Cerro Colorado.

1998

A mediados de 1989 el director de la estación fue el Ing. Eduardo Atamoros, y a cargo de la operación estuvo el experimentado locutor y conocedor del medio radiofónico Ángel Márquez, quien tenía muy claro que para que el proyecto se consolidara, se necesitaba contar con la aceptación del público para generar ingresos por espacios publicitarios.

El 18 de noviembre de 1988 a las 17:30 horas, el Gobernador del Estado Víctor Manuel Liceaga Ruibal, a invitación de Don Guillermo Salas Peyró, activó el botón de encendido del transmisor de la estación para de manera simbólica iniciar la operación de XHSJS - Cabo Mil, 96.3 en la Frecuencia Modulada.

El siguiente paso era conformar un buen equipo de trabajo, de ahí, se da la contratación de Jesús Montaño como practicante en la cabina de Cabo Mil, y nos menciona el Chucho: “ponía música manejando discos de vinilo y tornamesas, pasaba al aire los comerciales en los reproductores de cintas de carrete, atendía llamadas”.

Edgar Chavarría recuerda que la estación contó con grandes padrinos, asistiendo a su inauguración conocidas personalidades. Por parte del Núcleo Radio Mil estuvieron Don Guillermo Salas Peryró y su familia, Carlos Flores, Juan José Bravo Monroy, Juan Ramírez y el Arq. Jacinto Ávalos, quien fuera el primer director de Cabo Mil; de la localidad asistieron el Presidente Municipal, Prof. León Cota Collins; el Delegado de Cabo San Lucas, José Manuel Guereña; desarrolladores, hoteleros y empresarios.

Hoy en día, Chucho Montaño locutor del programa Despierta Pariente, nos comenta haciendo una retrospectiva, que la puesta en marcha de programas en vivo fue detonador para multiplicar radioescuchas; recuerda su primer programa al aire bajo su conducción: “Autopsia Musical”, un programa de rock en el que se dedicaba una hora para analizar la trayectoria de un cantante o de una banda y poner sus canciones. Éste fue el primer programa del cual se hizo una nota completa en la prensa local destacando su producción.

También, con mucha emoción, recuerda un pasaje histórico: cuando por primera vez se transmitió en vivo y en directo desde Los Cabos a todas las estaciones del Núcleo Radio Mil en el país, el programa especial dedicado al eclipse total de sol, el 11 de julio de 1991.

Iniciando la década de los noventas, Cabo Mil decidió incluir música mexicana como rancheras, cumbias y baladas en la programación musical; el cambio agradó al público fortaleciendo la relación y definiendo el concepto radiofónico plural que continúa hasta la fecha, tratando de complacer los gustos de la mayor cantidad de radioescuchas.

De esta manera se inició la historia de la radio en Los Cabos.

Los Noventa

Iniciaron bajo la dirección del Ing. Eduardo Atamoros, en colaboración con Don Guillermo y sus hijos Guillermo y Fernando Salas, en la última década del siglo XX. Dentro de este esfuerzo se incluyó un programa para los residentes de habla inglesa y también se fortaleció la señal para ser escuchados en las comunidades rurales del municipio.

Mención especial para la señora Heidi Von Der Rosen, quien en 1990 se convirtió en la primera mujer en conducir un programa en vivo en la estación: El Mundo de la mujer, enfocado al sector femenino, al tener gran aceptación del público. Tiempo después se decidió ampliar la temática manteniendo el concepto para que fuera de interés general, lo que originó un cambio de nombre para convertirse en Platicando con Heidi.

1998 On November 18, 1988 at 5:30 pm, the Governor of the State, Victor Manuel Liceaga Ruibal, at the invitation of Don Guillermo Salas Peyro, activated the power button of the station transmitter and symbolically began operation at XHSJS - Cabo Mil, 96.3 FM. Edgar Chavarria recalls that the station had excellent sponsors with famous personalities attending the opening. On behalf of Radio Mil Nucleo were Guillermo Salas Peryro and his family, Carlos Flores, Juan Jose Bravo Monroy, Juan Ramirez and Arq. Jacinto Avalos who was the first director of Cabo Mil. Local attendees included the Municipal President Prof. Leon Cota Collins, the Delegate of Cabo San Lucas José Manuel Guereña, developers, hoteliers and business leaders.

The most difficult task was performed days before and consisted of mounting the transmitter that weighed more than a ton in the Cerro Colorado area.

In mid-1989, the director of the station was Ing. Eduardo Atamoros. In charge of operations was the experienced announcer and connoisseur of radio, Angel Marquez. Angel was very clear that for the project to be successful, it was necessary to have public acceptance that would generate revenue from advertising.

The next step was to form a stable team. As a result, Jesús Montaño was hired to be the studio announcer at Cabo Mil. He played music on vinyl records on turntables, the commercials went on the air from reelto-reel tape players, and he took requests.

The Nineties Chucho Montaño, announcer of the program Despierta Pariente, told us during a recent retrospective that the launch of live programs was the trigger that multiplied the number of radio listeners. He remembered the first program on the air under his leadership: “Autopsia Musical.” It was a rock program in which one hour was dedicated to analyzing the career of a singer or a band and playing their songs. This was the first program that was noticed by the local press for the production techniques.

It all began in the last decade of the 20th century under the direction of Ing. Eduardo Atamoros in collaboration with Don Guillermo and his sons Guillermo and Fernando Salas. A program for English-speaking residents was included and the signal was strengthened so the station could be heard in the rural communities of the municipality.

Mrs. Heidi Von Der Rosen deserves special mention. In 1990 she became the first woman to conduct a live program at the station. El mundo de la mujer, was focused on the female sector and received widespread acceptance. The decision was later made to expand the concept and make it of general interest. As a result, the name was changed to Platicando con Heidi.

With deep emotion, he remembered the historic moment when the first broadcast went live and direct from Los Cabos to all stations of the Radio Mil Nucleo in the country. The special program was dedicated to the total eclipse of the sun on July 11, 1991.

Beginning in the nineties, Cabo Mil decided to include Mexican music such as rancheras, cumbias and ballads in the programming. The public embraced the change. It helped strengthen the relationship with the station and define the concept of diverse music programming that continues to date. The goal was to please the tastes of the largest number of radio listeners.

In this way, the history of radio in Los Cabos began.

La revolución digital Entrando el nuevo siglo en los dos primeros años, Cabo Mil estuvo a cargo del Lic. Rodolfo Faber.

Con el cambio de milenio vino la transición de los equipos analógicos a los digitales, pasamos de los acetatos y cintas al mp3, luego a los archivos en computadora, lo que permitió facilitar el funcionamiento de la operación de la radio e incluso ahorrar espacio.

In the first two years of the new century, Cabo Mil was in the charge of the lawyer Rodolfo Faber. With the turn of the millennium came the transition from analog to digital equipment. Acetates and tapes gave way to mp3s and then computer files.

The digital revolution made it easier to operate the radio station and even saved space.

Cabo Mil se ha destacado por el gran servicio social de las coberturas y boletines especiales en la temporada de tormentas y huracanes, esenciales en la previsión y en la recuperación, antes y después del impacto de los fenómenos naturales en la región.

Desde hace 16 años la dirección de Cabo Mil está a cargo del Act. Fabián Cervantes Gil Michel, quien ha logrado modernizar la estación mediante una programación diversa para los distintos gustos y necesidades cambiantes de la audiencia, con noticiarios, programas de opinión, musicales, de revista y culturales.

Cabo Mil unió a Los Cabos con la señal del 96.3, convirtiéndose en parte importante de la comunidad y en un medio efectivo, dando voz a la comunidad para que se escuche su problemática y poder generar soluciones. Este concepto ha consolidado e identificado a la estación como parte de la vida cotidiana de la gran mayoría de los habitantes del municipio; se dice fácil, sin embargo, ha sido un esfuerzo constante que implica el trabajo y el talento de muchos hombres y mujeres valiosos que han conformado el equipo de la estación en tres décadas.

Cabo Mil stood out from other stations for the valuable social services it provided such as the coverage and special bulletins that were essential before and after the impact of storms and hurricanes.

Haciendo historia

Es un hecho que por ser pioneros y por tres décadas de esfuerzo buscando mantener el gusto de la gente, Cabo Mil es parte y hace historia como el medio de comunicación más importante de Los Cabos.

Making history Cabo Mil was an industry pioneer and for 30 years has given the people what they want and need to hear. No wonder Cabo Mil continues to make history as the most important means of communication in Los Cabos.

For the past 16 years, the direction of Cabo Mil has been in the charge of the actuary Fabian Cervantes Gil Michel. He has modernized the station through diverse programming that meets the different tastes and changing audience needs with news and opinion programs, and musical and cultural programming.

Cabo Mil joined Los Cabos with the signal of 96.3. It became an important part of the community and an effective means of giving a voice to the people so that problems could be heard and solutions generated. This concept has solidified the station’s identity as part of the daily life of the great majority of the community residents. It may sound easy, however, it has been the hard work and constant effort by many talented men and women over three decades that has made the station successful.

4to Concurso Anual del Altar del

D ia de Muertos El día de los muertos es una celebración que honra la memoria de los seres y santos difuntos. En el año 2008 la UNESCO declaró esta festividad como Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanidad por tratarse de una expresión tradicional y contemporánea, que a la vez es integradora, representativa y comunitaria. El Día de Muertos en la cosmovisión indígena es una visita transitoria de las ánimas de los difuntos, quienes regresan a casa, al mundo de los vivos, para convivir con los familiares y para nutrirse de la esencia de sus alimentos favoritos.

Por primera vez, Tendencia participó en la competencia de altares realizada por 4ta vez en Flora’s Farm. Se decidió concursar con un altar tradicional, que se dedicó como un pequeño homenaje póstumo a dos grandes pioneros en Los Cabos que fallecieron durante el año 2018, Abelardo L. Rodríguez y Jesús Valdez Vazquez.

Este evento con causa se enfocó en ayudar, como cada año desde que inició, a las asociaciones que trabajan en la comunidad. Enlazando así, a empresas locales con organizaciones benéficas para hacer equipos y concursar por alguno de los 3 premios que se asignaron: Altar mezcla entre tradicional y original, Altar más tradicional y Altar más original.

Cinco jueces conformados por: Maria Boehme, Pina Cate, Tanya Talamante, Juan Zapata y Dawn Spectre tuvieron la tarea de asignar los premios, la donación recaudada fue entregada directamente a cada asociación ganadora:

4th Annual Day of the Dead Altar Competition The Day of the Dead is a celebration that honors the memory of those who have passed away and religious saints. In 2008, UNESCO declared this festivity an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity due to the fact it is both traditional and contemporary and, at the same time, inclusive and representative of the community. In the eyes of the indigenous world, the Day of the Dead is a transitory visit of the souls of the deceased who return home to the world of the living to live with family members and nourish themselves with the essence of their favorite foods.

This was the first time Tendencia participated in the altar competition that was held at Flora's Farm.

The decision was to compete with a traditional altar dedicated as a small posthumous tribute to two great pioneers in Los Cabos who died in 2018, Abelardo L. Rodríguez and Jesús Valdez Vazquez As in all past competitions, the focus was on helping the associations that work in the community.

Local companies were linked with charitable organizations to create teams that competed for one of the three prizes: Best Mix of Traditional and Original, Most Traditional and Most Original.

The five judges, Maria Boehme, Pina Cate, Tanya Talamante, Juan Zapata and Dawn Specter, had the task of awarding the prizes. The donations that were collected were directly delivered to each winning organization.

GENTE JOVEN POR UN CAMBIO, A.C. se funda en el 2012 por el Sr. Bill Ash y la Sra. Onagh Ash, inspirados por el amor hacia la comunidad juvenil de Los Cabos.

Tiene como misión empoderar a niños y jóvenes de 10 a 17 años para que ellos puedan crear un cambio social en la comunidad, a través de sus propias ideas y desarrollo de habilidades.

Durante un año escolar se imparten talleres sabatinos en escuelas públicas en San José del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas y La Paz a grupos de jóvenes para proveer herramientas, recursos, apoyo y la dirección que les permiten dejar de ser espectadores y convertirse en líderes.

Estos talleres están dirigidos por coaches, en su mayoría universitarios y profesionistas, quienes desde el inicio de la temporada reciben capacitaciones que permiten tener un impacto positivo en los niños y adolescentes con los que trabajan.

Esta Fundación sin fines de lucro da fuerza y confianza a los jóvenes para tomar mejores decisiones y explorar todas sus posibilidades.

GENTE JOVEN POR UN CAMBIO, A.C. was founded in 2012 by Mr. Bill Ash and Mrs. Onagh Ash. They were motivated by their love for the young people in the community of Los Cabos.

The association’s mission is to empower children and young people ages 10 to 17 so that they can use their own ideas and skills to create social change in the community.

During the school year, Saturday workshops are held in public schools in San Jose del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas and La Paz. Groups of young people are provided with the tools, resources, support and direction that allow them to stop being spectators and become leaders.

These workshops are led by coaches, mainly university students and professionals, who receive the necessary training to have a positive impact on the children and adolescents with whom they work.

The nonprofit association develops strength and confidence in young people so they can make better decisions and consider all their possibilities.
