I hope that this edition of the SCRIBE finds you happy and healthy during this challenging time. Even though our building has been closed since the beginning of March, our synagogue has truly been a sanctuary for our members; a source of comfort, strength, and support during turbulent times.

We have not let up on our programming … in fact, just the opposite! Our programs are well-attended, even more than they were during pre-COVID times. I am proud of our temple’s leadership. Our clergy and professional staff have reimagined synagogue life with creativity and a newfound appreciation for technology.

They have ensured that our members know we are here for them, keeping them active and involved in all that is going on.

We are taking that same degree of creativity and applying it to the High Holy Days. It would have been nice for us to come together for our Temple Sinai family reunion, schmoozing and catching up in our temple lobby. It would have been restorative and comforting to sit shoulder to shoulder, singing and praying in our sanctuary, enjoying the High Holy Days in each other’s company as we have for so many years. Sadly, this will not be the case this year. Even if we

could bring people in and have them seated socially distanced from one another, the

minute that somebody sneezed, coughed, or lowered their mask, people would turn

their heads and wonder, “Am I safe here?” Families might have to decide who can go to

temple because they are physically fit and who may need to stay home. We didn’t want that to happen. Instead, we want to have the safest and most meaningful High Holy Day experience for the maximum number of our congregants.

The High Holy Days are a special time of renewal, and this year, more than ever, we need spiritual inspiration to feel restored and whole again. So here’s what we’re going to do: This summer, our clergy & staff worked with a renowned film company to pre-record all of our majestic High Holy Day services. The production took place in our sanctuary under strict safety guidelines prescribed by the CDC and New York State. After editing, the services will be hosted online for exclusive viewing by Temple Sinai members.

We have decided to pre-record instead of livestream services to ensure the highest quality and richest experience for our members. Each one of YOU is the reason Temple Sinai continues to be a robust and vibrant community. Thank you in advance for your continued support.

Members in good standing will get a unique login code to access most of our High Holy Day services. From Erev Rosh Hashanah to Neilah, we’re all going to be watching the same services at the same time; singing along with the cantors and choir, listening to words of Torah from our rabbis, reciting the prayers communally, praying privately in our own hearts, and being stirred by the sound of the shofar. Our community will come together as one, from the safety of our homes.

We are one community, one congregation. We have risen to meet many challenges over the last few months, and these High Holy Days will be a demonstration of our unity and strength as a community. I believe that each of you will truly feel eLEVated by it.

I am proud of our synagogue. I am proud of the dedication and generosity of our members. If you haven’t already done so, please renew your membership and continue to support us in the sacred work that we do.

Every day, Temple Sinai is there to offer help to those in need and also, of course, accept the support that you yourselves may be able to offer to continue our critical mission. We are all in this together. I know that this will be a terrific High Holy Day season for all of us.

RECIPROCAL TICKETS The Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) suggests that members in good standing at Union congregations who will be in another community during the High Holy Days be welcomed to worship with a temple in that community. This year, while we are not holding in-person services, Temple Sinai will still be participating in this practice. If you are planning to visit relatives in other areas and would like to worship with them at their temple, please contact Betty in the temple office at 516.621.6800 and she will request courtesy seating for you or video access, if available. If you have out-of-town relatives visiting you, please have them contact their own temple and have them send Betty a request stating they are members in good standing at their local temple either by fax to 516.625.6020 or email at bbrandel@mysinai.org and she will take care of getting them the log-in information needed for those services not open to the public.

Please be aware that we can only honor requests from members in good standing (you have paid your dues for 2020/2021). Additionally, this program is intended for out of town visitors, so we cannot honor requests for members of local temples or synagogues (i.e. Western Nassau County). We want to be as accommodating as possible, however, please do not ask us to break the rules.

We greet this New Year unsettled and uncertain. For the first time in many lifetimes, we will pray in our homes and not in synagogue. I do promise our services will be meaningful and inspire authentic prayer, yet I will miss our communal gathering, greeting you with our customary Temple Sinai hugs.

My brief SCRIBE note is a plea: Please do not abandon your Temple Sinai this year, and please encourage your friends and family to join this glorious Jewish sacred community. If our physical separation leads to your resignation, so many will suffer from the cutbacks that could force us to diminish our services to our community and our members in need.

We need you now, more than ever. My seminary teacher, Rabbi Larry Kushner, once taught that “when the wilderness tabernacle is completed, near the end of the Book of Exodus, we are told, ‘And it came to pass that the tabernacle was one’ (Exodus 36:13). Commenting on this curious expression, Rabbi Mordechai Yosef of Izbica (d. 1854) observes: “In the building of the tabernacle, all Israel were joined in their hearts.”

Physical distance cannot rupture our community’s heart. Thanks to Zoom, we continue to learn, pray, and support each other. Soon, God willing, we will return to our beautiful sacred home, celebrating the gifts of faith, tradition and community. In the meantime, please ensure that we remain strong. Every single one of us is essential to fulfill the promise of Jewish generations: Temple Sinai will remain strong for our children and our children’s children.

Our prayers are for health and safety, for economic security for the victims of this recession, and for healing for society’s harsh divisiveness.

May God be with you and yours, for a new year of blessing.

I never really paid much attention to this quote before. I mean, who wants to dance in the rain? My shoes will get soggy, my hair will frizz, and when I go inside, I’ll shiver from the air conditioning … who’s with me?

This summer, I was invited to dance in the rain and wait for a rainbow.

I hesitated, thinking about my hair, the dinner I was in the middle of preparing, and a multitude of other things that seemed so important before slipping off my shoes and heading outside. With social distancing, I wasn’t going anywhere so frizzy hair - don’t care was my attitude, dinner would wait, and all the other stuff wasn’t going to wash away with the raindrops.

My daughter took my hands and started to sing, laugh, and twirl me around with such intense joy. The rainbows that followed were breathtaking but what I realized as water dripped from my eyelashes was even more moving. Finding joy in the “right now,” although it may cause you to shiver or require fresh socks, is a gift. Our lives are filled with worry, stress, and uncertainty. These brief moments to be silly, to laugh, to forget about your responsibilities for a brief moment keep you young, help you focus, and, most of all, help you see the beauty in the people and world around you.

HOW giving. HOW innovative. HOW humorous. HOW dynamic.

HOW can someone do it all? If you are HOWard and Margie Berrent you can!

At Temple Sinai, every heart has a home. It all started in 1961 when the hearts of Margie’s parents, Barbara and Ed Steiner, of blessed memory, found a home at Temple Sinai. Margie and Howard were married at Temple Sinai by Rabbi Kahan. Rabbi Petuchowski officiated at their children, Jennifer and Steven’s B’nei Mitzvah and confirmations. It was rabbinic intern, Michael White, who was Jennifer’s enthusiastic and wonderful confirmation teacher.

Few couples have given as much as Margie and Howard Berrent over the 40+ years they have been members.

They have been involved and participated in all aspects of temple life. Shortly after joining in 1977, Margie and Howard became founding members of the Chai Society, Temple Sinai’s social and fundraising group. They developed friendships that have remained over the years. Howard’s involvement began as co-chairperson of the Education Committee with Lois Schnipper. Howard organized and chaired the 10th anniversary of the commemoration of 9-11. He was a chairperson of the gala for the 70th anniversary of Temple Sinai. Howard loves to read; he began the Big Read and got authors Pete Hamill, Alan Zweibel, and others to participate. As temple president between 2013 and 2015, Howard’s goal for his presidency was to foster a feeling of community with the temple. He accomplished that with his warm, friendly demeanor and especially High Holy Day speeches that were creative, humorous, and uplifting. Margie and Howard were both part of the original group of Purim Spielers. They journeyed to Israel for two memorable trips with the temple.

Howard is an educator who has worked as a public school teacher, a college professor, an author, and head of several educational publishing companies.Margie held the position of programming chairperson for Sisterhood in her early years and has continued to be an active member in what is now Friend of a Friend/Chaverot. Margie became an adult Bat Mitzvah in 1991. She has been an esteemed member of the Todah Rabah Committee since its inception in 2015. Professionally, Margie was the “invitation lady.” So many of us benefitted from her talents and patience as we chose invitations for our b’nei mitzvah, weddings, stationery (remember stationery?) and other celebrations. When we ordered our Jewish New Year’s cards from her, all the profits went to the temple.

Margie and Howard are regulars at Friday night services and we look forward to seeing them at these evening Shabbats for many Shabbats to come.

As Margie and Howard expressed, “Temple Sinai has always been a place of comfort to our family; a place of solace in difficult times, a place to share happiness on joyous occasions and always a place to socialize with friends and neighbors. We see our Temple as a place for us to support the tenets of Reform Judaism and to reaffirm our Judaism to ourselves and our children.”

TEMPLE SINAI ADULT ENGAGEMENT

Fall Programming Preview Similar to so much else in our current world, Adult Engagement programs will look a little different this year. Our fall calendar of events – just like spring and summer – will take place virtually, on Zoom. The overarching theme of this year’s programs is overcoming intolerance, which includes antisemitism and the fight for racial justice.

After concluding our summer program series in the first week of September, we’ll be kicking off the program year mid-month with Jon Wertheim, Executive Editor of Sports Illustrated and 60 Minutes correspondent, who will speak about the state of the sports media in 2020. Later this month, we’ll learn about BDS on college campuses and how best to respond to it. I’m delighted that we’re co-sponsoring this program with Temple Sinai’s Youth Department, and we can look forward to many more such collaborations throughout the year on topics ranging from LGBTQ rights to Israel.

Jason Isaacson, Chief Policy and Political Affairs Officer at the AJC will speak to us in mid-October about the upcoming election cycle, and later that month, Rabbi White will be in conversation with Mickey Gitzin of the New Israel Fund. Dr. Bernd Wollschlaeger will address the congregation during Kristallnacht Shabbat services in early November. He will share his experiences growing up – unbeknownst to him – as the son of a Nazi officer and his own conversion to Judaism in reaction to learning who his father truly was.

In conjunction with the Jewish Book Council and the Sid Jacobson JCC, we will host two authors’ talks on Zoom during the fall and winter months with Debbie Cenziper and Anna Solomon, respectively.

Looking further ahead, we look forward to rescheduling Christian Picciolini, a reformed Neo-Nazi, who will speak to us about his experiences as an extremist and how he found his way out of “America’s most violent hate movement.” This must-see event will be co-sponsored by the Roslyn and East Williston school districts and a number of our local interfaith partners.

We also plan to host Deborah Lipstadt in the spring. Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish History and Holocaust Studies at Emory University, Professor Lipstadt will discuss her most recent book, Antisemitism: Here and Now.

The most prominent effort to undermine Israel’s existence, the BDS campaign is rampant with misinformation and distortion and college and university campuses have become battlegrounds. Zev Hurwitz, the Director of Campus Affairs at the AJC, will explore contemporary BDS manifestations and provide best practices for handling this current issue on college campuses.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL

Cantor-Educator Elena Schwartz cantorelenaschwartz@mysinai.org We are so excited that we will soon be welcoming our students back to Temple Sinai Religious School! Over the past two months, we have been working diligently with our Education Committee, developing plans for two models of instruction; models that would meet our families needs while maintaining our high educational standards. Our team considered all the possible options in order to re-imagine what our school will look like in the year ahead; this comparison chart shows the two Religious School options for students in Kindergarten through sixth grade. For our virtual program, we will be partnering with ShalomLearning, the leading provider of virtual Jewish education and a company whose curriculum values match our own.

Our Mitzvah Makers (seventh graders) will also utilize ShalomLearning’s interactive virtual curriculum. Their school year will also include a variety of programs led by the clergy, educators from the Ant-Defamation League, Cantor-Educator Elena Schwartz veterans of the IDF, and much more.

The students will have the opportunity to continue their Hebrew language learning if they so choose.

As always, the year will feature a wide variety of special programs, experiences, and holiday celebrations, both in-person and virtual.

Meet Our Teachers

Our amazing teachers are an important reason we are the Religious School children LOVE. In this first-in-a-series of profiles, meet Dalia Brody and Marty Hirschfield!

Dalia Brody

Dalia has had the privilege of teaching Religious School at Temple Sinai for the past 20 years. She has brought to our school her profound love of children along with her passion for teaching. Although she has taught many grades here over the years, she is currently teaching 5th and 6th grade. In addition, she has been working as an early childhood teacher for over 30 years in an Orthodox Yeshiva.

Dalia was born in Israel where she received her degree in teaching. She spent six years

teaching in an Israeli public school. She then moved here with her American husband, Charles, and they have been married more than 40 years and have four children and grandchildren. Dalia lives in Glen Cove where she and her husband are active members of their conservative temple. At one time, Dalia taught religious school there and her husband served as the president. She loves to cook many traditional Israeli dishes and her hobbies include tending to her garden.

Martin Z Hirschfield

Marty has over 20 years of experience teaching Hebrew school. In his career, he has taught

4th, 5th, 6th and 7th grade, and even had the pleasure of teaching Hebrew high school.

Marty’s eight years at an Orthodox Yeshiva in the Bronx provided him with his Hebrew

training. Outside of Religious School Marty teaches defensive driving, financial planning,

and accounting.

Since the Maccabees had very few soldiers on their side yet they still won which shows that the Jewish people are dedicated and don’t give up easily. I also love the fact we celebrate eight nights with friends and family.

In addition to the children’s services with our clergy (see the High Holy Days Services schedule for details), we are creating virtual services for grades K-6 with singer/songwriter Jacob “Spike” Kraus and some very special guests!

TODAH RABAH FROM TEMPLE SINAI Jewish Genealogy Let Brotherhood of Temple Sinai help you to find your roots and develop your family tree!

An old saying offers: “If you don’t know where you come from, then you don’t know where you are.” The Brotherhood of Temple Sinai has taken this adage to heart and made Jewish Genealogy, or the study of “who we are and where we come from,” a major focus of many Brotherhood activities.

New York City was the central destination of many early immigrants to America and the city holds a plethora of venues and opportunities to research and appreciate the odyssey of our Jewish forbearers. Our Brotherhood has hosted a speaker from the Jewish Genealogical Society of Long Island, made visits to numerous Jewish heritage museums in NYC, the Holocaust and Tolerance Center on Long Island and the Tenement Museum of New York, and attended a guided tour of the Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn holding the resting places of many famous and historic Jewish New York personalities.

We’ve also scheduled a presentation by an author who has written a study of 125 years of synagogues on Long Island, made plans to tour the former immigration center on Ellis Island, sponsored presentations on how to develop a family tree and how to write a memoir, and one of our members has even prepared an illustrated book on the history of our Temple.

Back by popular demand, Brotherhood will sponsor a presentation by long-time Brotherhood member Larry Krasnoff, explaining how to find your roots and develop your own family tree. With all this time on your hands, what better time to start this legacy for your family? Everyone is welcome! The presentation is scheduled for Wednesday, October 7th, 2020 at 7:30 pm. Larry Krasnoff will explain how to prepare your family tree and the computer sites available to trace your roots. Even if you are not currently an active member of Brotherhood, you are encouraged to join us and start this family project that will have lasting importance.

The monthly Brotherhood meeting will take place right before the presentation at 7:00pm. Zoom information for both the meeting and the genealogy program will be sent to you via email.

Memorial Plaques honor the memories of our loved ones who have passed away. They are in the hallway leading to the sanctuary. Cost of each plaque is $700, which includes a second version to be put up for your loved one’s yahrzeit.
