What is Post-Pandemic Freedom, Really?

As I write, half of all American adults have received at least one vaccine shot and I’m hearing about teenagers and their vaccines, about the possibility of in-person proms and graduations. Rebecca and I just learned that we will be able to attend David’s graduation ceremony at USC this month, so the month of May not only brings spring warmth and a burst of floral color, it also brings the hope of freedom from the pandemic’s nightmare.

Last week, I entered a restaurant, sat down and ordered, and ate. It felt utterly normal, but it also felt as if I had been freed from a kind of incarceration, as if eating a turkey sandwich in a diner, something I might do several times a week pre-pandemic, was worthy of a blessing. So, I’ve been thinking about what freedom looks like as we slowly heal from Covid’s reach.

The Hebrew word for “freedom” is dror. The Torah required our ancient ancestors to “proclaim freedom throughout the land and to all its inhabitants” by releasing servants, forgiving debts, and letting the land lie fallow. In Jewish terms, “freedom” is not acting with abandon or with libertine self-indulgence; freedom, in Jewish terms, is exercising choice in pursuit of blessing and that sometimes means limiting our choices. I hope that this Jewish wisdom will guide us as we regain our freedom from Covid. What do I mean?

1. Before Covid, dinners were often measured in minutes, often solitary, and very often unhealthy. When the pandemic stripped us of some of life’s craziness and barred us from social obligations, most of us enjoyed long, lingering family meals. Some of us learned to cook (I now make a mean meatloaf!) and many of you shared that Shabbat dinners have become a regular family anchor. Even when life returns to its frenetic pace and social life can speed up again, I hope you will continue to carve out that sacred family time.

2. Pre-pandemic, moms and dads of upcoming B’nei Mitzvah and brides and grooms looked especially harried the weeks before their simcha. The details, the lists, the seating charts, problems with the florist, who’s coming and who isn’t, the expense—you get the picture. Pandemic B’nei Mitzvah and weddings were small, often solitary affairs; dear family and friends were often excluded except as small boxes on a Zoom screen. It was hard to elevate the joy over the sadness of who was missing. I’m thrilled that we will be able to celebrate in large groups again, that grandparents can fly in for B’nei Mitzvah and weddings again, Still, many reported that by eliminating the vast array of accoutrements, they were able to focus on the meaningful, even sacred nature of that simcha. I do hope we can retain that wisdom, refusing to let the details and the cost overshadow the blessings of love and family, faith, and tradition.

Judaism’s focus on memory is itself wisdom: We are not permitted to ignore the lessons past challenges can teach us about how we live our lives; out of the horrors of this pandemic, some wisdom has emerged. Just because we CAN fill every moment with distracting, even enticing, options, and just because we CAN overload our lives and our simchas with extraneous shiny objects, does not mean we should. When we don’t, we are exercising our freedom as God intended.

-Maya Angelou As I complete my second and final year as President of Temple Sinai, this quote from Maya Angelou deeply resonates with me. The past nine years on the board were filled with personal growth moments and opportunities to support this community that I love. I joined the board as Friend of a Friend President and was invited to join the executive committee and embark on a journey to temple president. I was nervous and unsure of my role or if I could or would have an impact.

In determining my intention, I decided not only to make a difference but to become a better member by giving in any way I could, while further strengthening our wonderful Jewish community. Through the guidance, experience, and leadership of our wise past presidents, devoted trustees, beloved clergy, attentive staff, and my incredibly supportive family, I understood that all parts of the temple are essential for us to be truly successful. Everyone must work together, balanced and intentional, to provide for our community’s spiritual, educational, and social needs, ultimately ensuring its longevity.

I recently read, wisdom is knowing what to do next, virtue is doing it, and in Amy Braunstein, we have both wisdom and virtue. Her leadership and her partnership have helped me weather many challenges these past two years. Our temple community is blessed to welcome her as our new president, along with an incoming board of trustees and officers who bring tremendous talent and energy. Our future is in trusted hands.

To our resigning board members, Larry Cohen, Esther Fortunoff-Greene, Cara Londin, Susan Moisoff, and Philip Rabinovich: board service is one of the most challenging volunteer roles, and you performed your parts with dedication, grace, and the seriousness the position deserves. On behalf of the congregation, thank you for your time, talents, and knowledge!

As I reflect on these past months of my presidency, along with the challenges of a global pandemic, I have come to realize, it is not merely the giving of financial resources but giving of one’s expertise, passion, talent, and experience. We all come with various life experiences, which contribute to the uniqueness of how we view the world and how and why we choose to impact it. I believe, we all want to make the world a little better; I hope I have done that.

My years of board service have shown me that I have gifts to offer and a desire to do more, be more, and help more. Navigating life as this role comes to an end and my children make their way into the world, I can proudly reflect on the lessons we have learned as a family. The value of tikkun olam and the crucial and socially responsible commitment of giving what you can, how you can, when you can. Serving on the Board of Trustees of Temple Sinai has been one of the most valuable experiences.

Thank you for allowing me to fulfill a dream I didn’t know I had as a leader of this beautiful Jewish community.

The Social Action committee has needed you, our temple members, more than ever since the pandemic turned life as we knew it into a roller coaster ride. Along this ride, we have experienced fear and loss, felt hope and optimism, adapted and changed, agreed and disagreed, but from the moment this ride began one thing became certain: we need each other.

Social Action is usually busy with our causes and collections, but all of a sudden there was a shift in what was needed, and the quantities needed greatly increased. Yes, we continued to collect food for food banks and pantries, but this year, we were also arranging for meals to be delivered to first responders. Yes, we collected clothes, but this year, we also collected phone chargers and goggles for hospital workers. Yes, we collect books and paper towels, but this year, we also donated funds for PPE. A year ago, Mitzvah Morning, along with baseball, and summer camp, and everything else, was not as it had been. Although we could not be together, everyone practiced tikkun olam with generous tzedakah donations. This year, Mitzvah Morning looked more like what we know but with smaller groups and fewer projects, limited by safety guidelines. Happily, craft bags still brightened children’s faces and housewarming buckets helped people escaping homelessness. Books were delivered to readers of all ages and sandwiches were made, packaged, and sent off. Household items went to help refugees starting over. Blood was donated. Mitzvah Morning might not have been as big this year, but to those on the receiving end, it was every bit as comforting and meaningful.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL

“The world was created through speech (God said “Let there be … and there was…”) and through speech the world will be perfected…”

In connection to Passover, our ShalomLearning Values Curriculum focused on koach hadibur (the strength of speech/words). Our students learned the strength and power they have through their speech. They also understood that our traditions, rituals, and values elevate us and empower us to use our voices positively and appropriately. Through exploration of koach hadibur students discussed how to better distinguish between words that hurt and words that heal, how to practice making good choices as to when to speak and when to remain silent.

Our Kindergarten, First and Second Graders learned that Passover is a time to ask questions and engage in the story of our ancestors enslavement in Egypt, their escape, and the birth of the Jewish nation. They learned that asking questions is how we understand and connect to what came before us. The Four Questions lead us to ask why this night is different from all other nights.

Our Third Graders learned that words can hurt and heal. In our family, we can use the power of speech to strengthen relationships and individuals. They learned the Jewish value of not speaking lashon hara (hurtful language) and made personal connections to understanding the effects of gossip. Through the story of the Cantor-Educator Elena Exodus, they learned theSchwartz ways Miriam and Moses used the power of speech to help the Jewish people.

Our Fourth Graders learned that we are primarily known in the world is through our words (including name, reputation, and fulfillment of promises). This is true for what we say aloud and in our world of email, texting, and social media, for what we write. Students learned the importance of keeping their word. The students learned how words communicate powerful ideas in the Passover story and learned to recite the Four Questions.

Our Fifth Graders learned that words are powerful and challenging and can significantly impact their relationships and the world. They learned that words can express feelings and that asking questions is a form of the power of words as it helps them learn and understand the world. They learned the importance of speaking up for their beliefs, even when it is difficult. They learned about lashon hara and motzi shem ra (putting out a bad name) and the harm that they can cause to others. The students learned to recite the Four Questions.

Our Sixth Graders learned that our traditions, rituals, and values elevate us and empower us to use our voices appropriately for the good of the world and ourselves. The students learned that words have power and with that power comes the responsibility to help others and avoid hurting them. They discussed the impact of speaking out as part of a group. They learned about lashon hara and the dangers associated with it. The students learned the significance of the commandment to tell the Exodus story at the Passover Seders.

Our Seventh Graders learned that our traditions, rituals, and values elevate us and empower us to use our voices appropriately for the good of the world and ourselves. The students learned the importance of speaking out as a part of or on behalf of a cause they feel passionately about and that their words have the power to change the world.

May we all use the strength of our words and the power of our voices for the good of the world around us and ourselves!

Our Mitzvah Makers had an interesting discussion about koach hadibur - the power of speech. In light of Passover, the students engaged in meaningful conversations about freedom of speech.

In preparation for Passover, Cantor Elena visited with Religious School students. It was wonderful to hear our students chanting the Four Questions, discussing main themes of the holiday of freedom, and singing Passover songs together.

Parents: Dorit Kane, Gary Kane Siblings: Maxwell - 15, Zachary - 13 Grandparents: Joanne & Yechiel Gordon, Sylvia & Allen Kane School: Roslyn Middle School - 7th Grade Years in Our Religious School: 6 Favorite Holiday: Shabbat. I enjoy having a sit-down dinner with my two different families once a week. We talk about our days: school, sports, what we are doing over the weekend, and other stuff. I also like to bake challah from scratch. It is delicious.

Describe Yourself: During the pandemic, I had a lot more time to myself and started reading more often. I also like to watch movies and sketch. My favorite sport is basketball and I was happy when we were finally able to play at school. I also try to see my friends and we bake, play sports, and hang out. I am looking forward to going back to Camp Chipinaw.

Why is Becoming a Bat Mitzvah Important? Becoming a Bat Mitzvah means that I am coming of age and becoming an adult. I will have more responsibility and be more involved in my community and family. It also means that the weather is getting nicer and we are almost finished with the pandemic. I am looking forward to being a normal kid.

ZACHARY KANE MAY 1

I like to share the joy of giving and receiving gifts. I also like the history behind Chanukah, which is that the oil lasted for eight days as opposed to only one day.

This teaches me that if you fight for what you believe in, and focus on good things, miracles can happen.

Describe Yourself: During the pandemic, I have been on a hybrid schedule where part of the time I am home and part of the time in school. It has been interesting. I talk, text, play games and play sports with my friends all the time, but it has been a lot harder these days. I can’t wait to spend more time in person with them. I am also excited to go back to Camp Chipinaw.

Why is Becoming a Bar Mitzvah Important? Becoming a Bar Mitzvah means that I am becoming a man. As I get older, I will gain more responsibility and work harder in school and at other things, like a clothing brand business I started with some friends. I am also looking forward to the pandemic ending and being a normal kid again.

Parents: Emilie & Rich Lippmann Siblings: Olivia - 9 Grandparents: Francine & Mitchell Schwartz School: Roslyn Middle School - 7th Grade Years in Our Religious School: 4 Favorite Holiday: My favorite Jewish holiday is Chanukah. I love the story of how the small Jewish army defeated the massive Greek army and how the oil in the Jewish temple lasted for eight days. This shows that we should never underestimate the underdog. I also love celebrating with my family and getting and giving presents.

Describe Yourself: I enjoy playing baseball and golf. I like to hang out with friends and family and I enjoy playing video games and watching YouTube. I also like to follow the stock market.

My favorite subjects at school are math and science.

Why is Becoming a Bar Mitzvah Important? The thing that I am looking forward to most about becoming a Bar Mitzvah is having more responsibilities, which means that I will also have more freedom.

Describe Yourself: I am crazy about sports. You can always find me watching a game on TV, playing hoops, or discussing the latest player stats or news. I also love spending my summers at Trail’s End Camp, but most importantly, I love being with my family.

Why is Becoming a Bar Mitzvah Important? Becoming a Bar Mitzvah means becoming a man and no longer being a kid in the eyes of the Jewish people. I look forward to helping others by leading by example as I embark on Jewish adulthood.

Teen stress is an important health issue that more and more teens are experiencing each year.
