Olympics in China 2022 and the Ominous Shadow of 1936 Berlin I learned this week that several of the sponsors of the recent Winter Olympic Games in Beijing also funded the Nazi Olympics in 1936: Hugo Boss, the company that manufactured the SS’s uniforms, Coca Cola, and others. Although Auschwitz and Treblinka were a couple of years away, Hitler was firmly in power in 1936. Everyone attending the Berlin Games knew where he stood. The Jews were the enemy; Jews were prohibited from participating in the Games. A few made it, but only because they snuck in. I remember my grandfather telling me that he followed those games with a foreboding feeling of nausea as the world celebrated the regime that would murder his family. I felt a bit of that same nausea watching this year’s games with its corporate sponsors, the incredible athletes who trained their entire lives for those moments with the dark, ominous cloud of genocide hanging over them. Roughly 12 million Uyghur Muslims live in the Xinjiang Province, and for the past several years, the Chinese government has built a network of concentration camps (sound familiar?) for brutal forced labor. Almost two million of them are imprisoned for no other reason than their religious identity. In addition, over 9000 mosques have been burned to the ground (again, sound familiar?). Hundreds of thousands of children have been forcibly removed from their parents, and Uyghur women are subject to forced sterilization. Together with an army of international NGOs, there is a bipartisan effort in the US Congress to pressure China to end its reign of terror. Our Congressman, Tom Suozzi, is a leader of this effort together with Senator Marco Rubio. Legislation requiring manufacturers to guarantee that they do not use imprisoned or forced labor in Xinjiang Province is supported by both Republicans and Democrats but is opposed by such behemoths as Apple.

Recently, an amazing young man, Jake Lewitt, a product of Temple Sinai’s Religious School and Teen Programs, called me to discuss the Uyghurs. He referenced our sixth grade class on the Holocaust, taught by master teacher Abbie Laskey. He told me he remembers learning how the world turned its back on Jews, and how we have to fight bigotry so others don’t suffer as we did. He said that he learned to care for the oppressed at Temple Sinai. After that conversation, I donated to both Jewish World Watch and the Religious Action Center, specifically for their advocacy on behalf of the Uyghurs. I also wrote Senators Schumer and Gillibrand, asking them to escalate the pressure on China. I invite you to make your voices heard as well. As the late Elie Wiesel so prophetically taught, we must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Rabbi Michael A. White

We Jews know that apathy in the face of genocide is lethal. Hitler and the Germans may have led the charge to murder Jews, but they succeeded because the world ignored our people’s cries.

Upholding Humanity For 6,000 years, Jews have retold the story of the Exodus from Egypt and the ten plagues that God sent to Pharaoh. I can vividly recall each Passover, spilling a little wine for each plague yet never really having an appreciation for what a plague truly was. As we join together for the holidays, we all know what living in a plague is and how it has impacted our lives in so many ways. We have all had to make adjustments in our daily routines and have suffered losses as individuals, communities, and across the world. As I am writing this article, I am looking forward to Passover and wondering whether we will truly be able to celebrate this year with family gathered at our table, with small children, and older family members. Will my mother-in-law be able to come from Florida to meet her new great-grandson? Will my children be able to come from California to celebrate? Will the eleventh plague still be front and center in our lives or will it have drifted into the background? Everything remains unclear as it seems to have been for so long now. I thought my first year as President of Temple Sinai would be different. I was worried about budgets, programming, staff turnover, and constructing a new sanctuary. Instead, I have daily meetings and emails about Covid and B’nei Mitzvah, Covid and the ECC, Covid and Religious School, Covid and services, Covid and Adult Engagement. You get the idea! At the same time, the great work of our temple clergy, amazing staff, and dedicated board members drive our commitment to being a place where every heart has a home. It is a balancing act of priorities, challenges, and vision. The message of Passover is one of the Jews overcoming slavery and escaping from Egypt to eventually find their way through the desert to the Promised Land. We remember the suffering of Jews and their struggle for freedom. By retelling the story with our family gathered together, we maintain the messaging and commitment that ties to our struggle.

The message can be extended to all who suffer from oppression. Our responsibility as Jews is to help alleviate that suffering and support others. This year, Temple Sinai is partnering with several other Long Island-based faith institutions to form a new coalition called Upholding Humanity. The first area the coalition is focusing on is assisting in the support and resettlement of Afghan refugees. In December, with your help, we were able to provide refugees in temporary housing with clothing. Since January, Upholding Humanity has partnered with HIAS to resettle Afghan families in Queens and Long Island. Rabbi Ilana Schachter is leading the efforts to support these families in their resettlement, which includes helping to provide housing, food, medical assistance, language assistance, and employment. This year, as we lean into Passover, let’s focus our attention outward on the suffering of others rather than on our own struggles of continuing to manage Covid. Clearly, all of us have a similar challenge, but the greater good can still lift us above this eleventh plague as we aid our world community, better the lives of others, and stay true to the ever-relevant message of Passover. I am still uncertain about our Seder and who will gather at the table in person rather than virtually. Nevertheless, it is time to look upward and outward and raise our collective efforts as we have always done as Jews. Temple Sinai shines brightly and will continue to be a beacon, reflecting the highest values of Judaism and community. Wishing you a very happy and joyful Passover with your families and friends.

Children Love to SELebrate the Jewish Holidays! One of the most fun and meaningful programs we’re running this year is geared towards engaging our youngest learners. SELebrate the Jewish Holidays: Embracing Jewish Life with Social-Emotional Learning is intended for children aged 2-4 and their grown-ups (grandparents are very welcome!) and is a collaboration between Adult Engagement and Temple Sinai’s ECC. This initiative is generously funded through PJ Library’s New York Engagement Grant. Each session of SELebrate focuses on a particular Jewish holiday. We open with a small act of tzedakah followed by a song, the reading of a PJ Library book, a prompted discussion about the social-emotional learning skill relevant to that holiday, and a craft or an activity. For example, during our Chanukah session, we read Chanukah with Friends, learned about respecting others, and made drip mats for our chanukiyot. Our SELebrate series has also adapted as the pandemic continues to impact the ways in which we gather. In January, when Omicron prevented us from meeting in person, we created take-home kits for our session on Tu B’Shevat – the new year of the trees. Each kit contained a copy of the book The Carob Tree, arugula seeds, a small flower pot to decorate, a card about personal growth (the SEL skill for that session), and a QR code that enabled people to watch a video of our educator, Audra Needle, reading the book Dear Tree. (Please scan the QR code to access the video!) While this wasn’t what we had initially envisioned, it was a tremendous success, allowing us to engage with over 30 families, both from Temple Sinai and the larger community.

Part of what makes this program so meaningful is seeing families share special moments together, like the new ECC parent who came to our High Holy Day session with her adorable twins, or the longtime congregant who came to our Shabbat and Chanukah sessions with her precious granddaughter. Temple Sinai is very grateful to PJ Library for its support of this series. I’m also personally grateful to all the families who have been participating, and to Rabbi Schachter and Audra, my partners in this endeavor, for making this experience such a joy. Please join us for our upcoming sessions, which we plan to resume in person, outdoors in the spring. SELebrate is free and open to the community, so invite your friends, too! It might seem funny to celebrate growth and the birthday of the trees in the middle of winter, when there is snow on the ground. But the Jewish holiday of Tu B’Shevat reminds us that growth is always happening, even when we can’t see it! Growth is happening right now, under the ground, and each of us is growing, too! This month, as we plant seeds in a pot and watch them grow, we can plant “seeds” in ourselves as well.

Learning About Responsibility and Recognizing Goodness Achrayut - Responsibility In connection with Tu B’Shevat, our ShalomLearning Values Curriculum focused on the value of achrayut (responsibility). We have the achrayut to respect and take care of the world: humans, animals, and the environment. God created the world, and now it is human beings’ achrayut to take care of it and take the necessary steps to protect the world and its creatures, treating it with kavod (respect). Our Kindergarten, First and Second Graders also discussed the Jewish value of bal tashchit (not wasting), in conjunction with Tu B’Shevat. They discussed how we can plant things or save things for other people (even people we may never meet) because making the Earth better is good for all people. We should be mindful of how to waste as little as possible in our daily lives. Our Third Graders discussed the responsibilities we have to ourselves, to family members, to others, and as Jews. We revisited the Jewish value of tikkun olam (repairing the world). We see this value as an obligation to society, and the students continued to explore how they can repair the world. Students also learned that achrayut (responsibility) extends to nature, which is celebrated as a component of the holiday of Tu B’Shevat. We need to take care of the earth and our natural resources so that future generations will be able to benefit from them. Tu B’Shevat is a holiday that celebrates trees and the achrayut of maintaining our environment. Our Fourth Graders examined our responsibilities to the previous generations who thought ahead for our benefit. They learned about the mitzvah of v’ahavta l’reyacha kamocha (loving others as ourselves) as a responsibility toward others. The students learned that we are responsible to share what we have to help others and the importance of giving tzedakah as an obligation, not as charity. Our Fifth Grade students learned various types of achrayut and what they owe to others and why. They learned that achrayut requires that we “step up” and “stand up” when we are confronted with injustice to ourselves or to another person even when others tell you it is none of your business. They learned about the central place of achrayut in the State of Israel through the lens of the kibbutz movement.

Our Sixth Graders learned the many layers of personal responsibility and how achrayut connects responsibility for “self” with responsibility for “others.” Students discussed recycling efforts as a mitzvah and the prohibition of wasting resources, bal tashchit. Students discussed the mitzvah of hashavat aveida, (returning lost objects) when it “costs” them time and money. Students considered how far one must go in order to fulfill our achrayut, responsibility to others. They studied the Gilad Shalit case and how the State of Israel had to decide how far the achrayut to a captured soldier should extend. Our Seventh Graders learned we have the achrayut to respect and take care of the world: humans, animals, and the environment. God created the world, and it is now human beings’ achrayut to take care of it and take the necessary steps to protect the world and its creatures, treating it with kavod (respect). They discussed tza’ar ba’alei chayim – our responsibility to animals. The literal translation of the Hebrew phrase tza’ar ba’alei chayim is “the suffering of living creatures.” Biblical scholars agree this means preventing animals from feeling pain. They also discussed taking responsibility to protect the land. Tu B’Shevat is a holiday where we remember our responsibility to protect the land and treat it with dignity and respect. Tu B’Shevat is an opportunity for us to think about the choices we make daily and how it impacts the land, the earth, and the world we live in.

Hakarat Hatov - Recognizing the Good In connection with Purim, our ShalomLearning Values Curriculum focused on the value of hakarat hatov (recognizing the good). Hakarat hatov is a core Jewish value that strengthens individuals and communities. We are part of a sacred community that actively chooses to be thankful and recognize the goodness in the world. Appreciating that the good you have been given comes from others and from God helps you identify and appreciate the good you can contribute to the world. The story of Purim shows us how appreciating the other people around us can lead to happiness and joy. When we change our perspective, we can have hakarat hatov even when things are tough Our Kindergarten, First, and Second Graders talked about different times and ways we show appreciation for the good things around us. mean everything is great or ignoring what’s wrong. It means looking for what is good and celebrating that. Purim is a time of happiness. While no one is happy all the time, we can learn from the message of this holiday to connect to the idea of happiness through giving back and working on making ourselves happy. They heard the story of Purim and the mitzvot and customs of the holiday. Our Third Graders talked about Jewish rituals and texts that discuss showing gratitude for ourselves and our families. Students focused on their relationships with their family members and reflected on the support and love they get from them. Students took time to recognize the people and places that have helped and supported them, and spent time thinking of ways they can give back. Students explored examples of hakarat hatov as it related to the Purim story and mitzvot of the holiday. Our Fourth Graders focused on how manners and the etiquette of gratitude sometimes get lost in the everyday rush of life. Holidays and life cycle events can be reminders to be grateful all year round. Students restated the basic story of Megilat Esther and the four mitzvot of Purim and discussed how holidays like Purim remind us to be thankful for the good that has happened to our people. They focused on the mitzvah of kibud av va’em and how it helps us remember all the good that our parents do for us and teaches us how to honor them to express our gratitude. Our Fifth Graders focused on how our stories and rituals help us remember to recognize the good things around us. They talked about the importance of names and the significance of being named for the quality of “thankfulness.” We are a people whose very name, yehudim, means “thanks.” They focused on the story of Purim and how it shows us that appreciating the people around us can lead to happiness and joy. Students analyzed Megillat Esther to understand the role of hakarat hatov in the story maintaining an attitude of gratitude during tough times by changing our perspective. Our Sixth Graders learned how to show appreciation for the good things they have been given and to contribute to others and the world around us. Students discussed how the Purim story teaches us that the Jewish response to the good things we have been given is to contribute to others and to the world around us. They identified Esther as a role model for appreciating the good she has been given by extending herself to help others. They re-stated the four mitzvot of Purim and viewed them as a Jewish response of thankfulness for the blessings we have been given. Students discussed how the concepts of hakarat hatov and paying it forward should guide them in planning Bar and Bat Mitzvah celebrations.

Holocaust and Jewish Resistance Course Temple Sinai Religious School is once again, graciously offering congregants the opportunity to audit the Holocaust and Jewish Resistance Course, taught virtually (on ZOOM) by congregant Abbie Laskey. Course participants will examine what it meant to be a child during this dark time in our people’s history. While the active participants in this course will be Sixth Grade students and their parents, the course is open to all Temple Sinai congregants. Auditors many attend as many of the virtual sessions as they desire. Auditors may also join an in-person session to be held at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center in Glen Cove on Sunday, March 27. Any congregant interested in auditing some or all of the sessions must contact the Religious School office by Friday, March 4 at 516.621.8016 or by emailing Debra Hollander at dhollander@mysinai.org. We enjoyed our Healthy Cooking for Thanksgiving lecture, and have still been experimenting with all of the delicious recipes that we shared in the new Temple Sinai of Roslyn Cookbook. Together we will honor the women of the Passover story, whose actions determined the destiny of our people. Enjoy this festive and interactive Passover celebration, led by Cantor-Educator Elena Schwartz and Rabbi Ilana Schachter. Details will follow; we are still hoping to be able to celebrate in person, but likely will be held on ZOOM. In 2019, A terrific group of women created an incredibly beautiful and relevant Haggadah for us all to enjoy. We will be printing more copies, and have them available for purchase in March. Although it is geared towards women, it makes for a great family Seder Hagaddah.

It has been a wonderful and enriching experience which has taken me on a journey that I never could have imagined. My artwork is the expression of my narrative. I am very much involved in life around me. My concern for humanity is paramount and my appreciation of nature is a constant. My work is part of the collection of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, as well as several private and corporate collections in the USA and Europe including the Newark Museum in New Jersey, the Museum of the American Numismatic Association in Colorado, and the National Sports Museum. My professional affiliations and exhibits include, among others, the Salon d’Automne in Paris, Audubon Artists, Inc., Allied Artists, Inc. the National Association of Women Artists, the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club,, The National Arts Club, Artist Member, and I am a trustee of the Artists Fellowship, Inc. a 162-year-old charitable organization that comes to the aid of professional artists in times of dire need.
