My Remarks from the Temple Sinai Annual Meeting This is the 25th annual meeting I’ve addressed as your rabbi. It’s not easy to qualify 25 years, but there are moments when the passage of a quarter-of-a-century does become very real. Preparing to marry the young people I named. Celebrating with couples I married, as their children become Bar and Bat Mitzvah. Laying wonderful friends to rest, friends who meant so much to this sacred community. And, on nights like tonight, thinking back to the Temple Sinai of 25 years ago and how we’ve changed. How we’ve evolved to both remain true to our Jewish ideals and to attract this next generation of Jewish families and children; how our educational programs at all levels have evolved to be more creative, flexible, and deep. How this temple stands up for social justice and tikkun olam and has built deep relationships with our interfaith and Jewish institutional partners. How generous we are when called to help, whether it’s the poor on Long Island, Afghan refugees, or victims of war in Ukraine. Tonight, I want to say how proud I am of how we weathered the pandemic as a community. I am so grateful to our outstanding lay leadership, with Amy as our president, for their partnership, their foresight, and their deep devotion to Temple Sinai. I am also grateful to our clergy, professional, administrative, teaching, and custodial staff, who work so very hard to keep this community together. Last week, I was visiting with one of our upcoming Bar Mitzvah families, and we were recalling that their older daughter, Sophie, was one of the first ZOOM Bat Mitzvah of the pandemic. They were in their living room. The grandparents were in their separate houses. I was in my home study. The cantors in their living room. Lulu, Ali, Adrianne, were all at home. I told them that we were terrified because we didn’t know what we were doing: If the ZOOM would work, what it would look like, but somehow, it all came together. It’s what we Jews do. We make it work. We not only survive, but we elevate hard times into meaningful times. That’s the Jewish way, that’s why the cantors perform Psalm 30 at Yizkor services: You

turn my mourning into dancing. Today was Yom HaZikaron, Israel’s day of mourning soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for Israel’s birth and survival. Tomorrow is Yom Ha’atzma’ut, Israel Independence Day. Israel’s first president, Chaim Weitzman, said that independence would not be handed to the Jews on a silver platter. And boy, was he right. Today, the State of Israel was in mourning, with heavy hearts. But tomorrow, all of Israel will be a festive party. Mourning into dancing. This annual meeting lacks the clarity we’d hoped for more than two years into this pandemic. We’re still on ZOOM. But, we’re getting to a better place, please God. After so much heartache, so much loss, and so much fear, Mitzvah Morning and our “Welcome Home” celebration this past Sunday, were amazing. I ate too much, but the Brotherhood’s burgers were just too good. And of course, the ice cream! Last week 230 of us, including many of our teen leaders, gathered to hear Christian Picciolini teach us about his journey from neo-Nazi to human rights advocate. More and more, people are coming to Shabbat services. We are emerging - coming back into our sacred space, tentatively joining together, once again. I just want to say, thank God for our wise, eternal, comforting, guiding faith, tradition, our Jewish strength, and our spiritual energy. Thank God for our Temple Sinai community, for helping each other walk into the valley of grief and climb the summit of life’s most joyful moments - together. We accompany each other. We support and cherish each other at all times. Together, we lift up, live, and pass on our beloved Jewish wisdom, obligations, and celebrations. Together we mourn. Together we dance. Change is Good! It is April as I write my SCRIBE article for this issue, and my first year as President of Temple Sinai is drawing to a close. As I begin my second year, I reflect on the past while looking ahead to the future. What will be going on this year in our temple, in our community, in the U.S., and around the world? This past year was not what I had envisioned when Rabbi White asked me to be president, but it has been meaningful and I hope my contributions to Temple Sinai have made us stronger. We began the year hoping that COVID-19 was abating so we could start planning our lives again. Instead, we have battled variant strains that come and go, people masking and unmasking and then masking again. With the commitment of our clergy, leadership, and congregants, we are anxious to welcome our membership and community as we return to our temple. World events have brought an even greater sense of tragedy and suffering. We are overwhelmed and saddened about the war in Ukraine and the extraordinary suffering and senseless death and destruction of so many lives, families, and communities. We are surrounded daily by heart wrenching images of families separated, citizens murdered in the street, and children alone with no one to care for them. As we act to help others, we are humbled by their strength and courage and are constantly reminded of our true Jewish values and our own need to speak up against aggressors and align ourselves with those who truly need our help in their struggle. Passover reminds us of the struggle of our ancestors against Pharoah. Our fight to survive and our escape from slavery was extraordinary. This year, my Passover challenge was figuring out how to host 27 family members for the first time since 2019.

Over the past three years, new babies have been born, we have lost loved ones, and had engagements and weddings. Everyone came to our seder this year because they wanted to be together more than anything else. Although we did our best to mitigate risk, the truth is, we could not keep anyone away. We are now looking forward to Andrew and Emily’s wedding in May with the same passion to share, love, and celebrate. A substantial change is coming to Temple Sinai. Our sanctuary is getting a total facelift this summer. We are lowering the bimah and making it accessible to people with disabilities. We are modernizing our seating to be flexible and allow for different arrangements depending on the service. The Décor and House Committees have been hard at work this year, upgrading the sound system, HVAC, and lighting, as well as choosing new carpet, fabric, and wall coverings. We are all looking forward to gathering together in September for the High Holy Days in our beautiful new sanctuary. Upon completion of the reading of each of the five books of the Torah, it is customary to shout “chazak, chazak, v’nitchazek” which means “Be strong, be strong, and we will strengthen one another.” Let us all be strong at Temple Sinai and work together to repair ourselves, our families, our community, and our world – one day at a time.

It felt so great to be back at Temple Sinai for Mitzvah Morning. Thank you to everyone who came to lend a hand - whether it was donating blood, making sandwiches, preparing Mother’s Day gift bags, packing housewarming buckets, or creating beautiful paper flowers - there is nothing better than the feeling you get when perform a mitzvah. This year, Mitzvah Morning was followed by a very special Welcome Back event featuring music, food, face painting, and the ever-popular ice cream truck! A fantastic time was had by all who attended!

Temple Sinai Brotherhood graciously sponsored a delicious Welcome Back barbecue. Thank you, gentlemen!

Project Zoysia On Sunday, May 1, our SORTY teens joined with the Brotherhood for a very special Mitzvah Morning project at New Montefiore Cemetery in West Babylon, NY. While participating in Project Zoysia, the groups combined efforts in a beautification project at the Temple Sinai section of the cemetery. Taking part in Project Zoysia, the group performed what is thought to be a mitzvah of the highest order: one where the participants cannot expect to receive thanks or comparable reward in return from those whom they are serving, The participants planted plugs of zoysia, a hearty, drought-resistant, grass that will spread and become a beautiful green carpet. This variety of grass is almost maintenance-free; it will eventually eliminate weeds and it requires little water, an important benefit since there is no artificial irrigation system.

The planting of this zoysia grass was a suggestion of the temple’s Cemetery Committee, an idea that was embraced by both Lulu Belferder, Director of Youth Engagement, and Richard Blatt, President of Brotherhood. Since it is recommended that the zoysia plugs be planted in the spring, its inclusion as an activity for Mitzvah Morning was obvious.

Members of Brotherhood, coordinated by Norman Hollander, and SORTY support, were divided into teams at the cemetery to plant the plugs in one section of the cemetery owned by Temple Sinai of Roslyn. Lessons learned at this event will be repeated in the other sections of cemetery overseen by Temple Sinai in the future. The plugs were planted on the gravesites, both occupied and unoccupied, and water applied from bottled water. Project Zoysia was completed with no complications and the sense of camaraderie was apparent for all participants in this mitzvah. The forecast for rain within 24 hours was taken as a sign of approval from a higher order and assurance in the success of the project. - Larry Krasnoff

DID YOU KNOW? Temple Sinai has recently acquired a limited number of graves in our sections at New Montefiore Cemetery in the areas that were previously sold out. These have been graciously donated back to the temple by families who have relocated and find they can no longer use them. Rather than wait until it becomes a matter of some urgency, we want to give our congregants an opportunity to explore their options. WE STAND WITH UKRAINE We are so proud of these two Temple Sinai Religious School students, recently recognized in the local media for their fundraising efforts on behalf of the people of Ukraine. Bat Mitzvah Project Helps Animals in Ukraine Bar and Bat Mitzvah projects are an incredible opportunity for kids to develop their leadership, research, and communication skills. But at their core, these projects are about compassion – understanding, learning, and loving others. We’re always on the lookout for Mitzvah projects that do just that, so when we heard about Morgan Sohmer’s efforts to save animals in Ukraine, we knew we had to share. Morgan’s Bat Mitzvah Project stemmed from her love for animals and her impressive global awareness: Anyone who knows me is aware that my Boston Terrier, Ruby, is my life. After hearing about all the atrocities happening in the Ukraine, I couldn’t help but think about the animals left behind,” she says. And Morgan’s right. According to the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), animals are neglected in times of war: We know from our rescue work around the world that animals are often the forgotten victims of conflict and war, IFAW states on their website. Impact is, of course, an important part of a mitzvah project, but perhaps more incredible is when a project draws our attention to something that otherwise would have slipped through the cracks. Animals have rights too, and right now they need our help in Ukraine. For my Bat Mitzvah Project, thanks to the guidance of Cantor Elena at Temple Sinai of Roslyn, I have partnered with a local animal shelter in the city of Dnipro in Ukraine. They are working tirelessly to care for these animals, many of whom are sick and injured, explains Morgan. Shelter Pegasus Dnipro is caring for animals who were abandoned or injured amidst the horrors of what is currently happening in Ukraine. It breaks my heart to see the photos they post, but I am inspired by the devotion of the staff to do my part to help these animals, says Morgan. And her Bat Mitzvah project encourages us to do our part too. Fundraising for Ukraine On Sunday, March 13, Roslyn Middle School sixth grader Reese Grotas raised over $200 to donate and support people in need in Ukraine. Through her self-started business, Created with Compassion, Reese makes and sells chocolate covered decorated Oreos and donates all proceeds every month to a different charity or organization in need. She loves to bake and has decided to follow this passion toward helping as many people as she can. To date, she has raised over $1,000 and has donated to six organizations including No Kid Hungry, INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network), and most recently, the Sid Jacobson JCC Food Pantry. In celebration of the Jewish holiday of Purim, Reese was invited by Cantor Elena Schwartz of Temple Sinai of Roslyn to sell her cookies to raise funds for Ukraine. Along with her friend Hailey Neale helping her sell at the event, she made her community proud and continues to support people in need throughout the year. Reese continues to raise funds for Ukraine; she recently purchased clothing that Cantor Sergei Schwartz distributed on his recent mission trip to Warsaw. Reese has an Instagram site she @createdwithcompassion where she posts her cookies and the organizations to whom she will be donating. She donates 100 percent of her earnings towards people in need. The Opening the Dor program will focus on intergenerational education; learning how to organize and lead a giving circle. Rabbi White, Rabbi Schachter and I, are poised to engage your learner in meaningful self-exploration, a deepening of their connection to the Jewish community, and tons of Community Service opportunities. Next year, we look forward to traveling together again, we are offering three exciting possibilities, all offering teens the opportunity to earn community service while they are exploring and spending time with their friends.

They can also take part in Raise Your Voice: Lobby and Advocate for Change alongside over 300 high school students from across North America. Friend of a Friend/Chaverot The women of Friend of a Friend have been very busy! We delivered Purim Shalach Manot Bags, and shared a fabulous evening of tradition, song and celebration at our Intergenerational Women’s Seder. We spent a wonderful evening learning how to make borscht at a special Borscht, Women, and Wisdom session with Cantor Elena. We enjoyed an amazing craft day together where we made gorgeous glass candle-holder sculptures.
