The time of the giving of the Torah

Shavout 101 Exactly seven weeks and one day after Passover, we arrive at Shavuot, the feast of weeks. Shavuot was, in ancient times, a pilgrimage festival. Our ancestors would journey from afar to the holy Temple in Jerusalem, where they would offer the first grains of their wheat crop and their first fruits.

Shavuot is also a time when we celebrate the giving of the Torah at Mt. Sinai – though it should be noted that this connection between Shavuot and the giving of Torah is not found in our Torah; it was, rather, developed later on, after the destruction of the second Temple, during the rabbinic period.

Ages ago, having escaped enslavement in Egypt and experienced the miracle of deliverance at the shores of the Red Sea, our ancestors gathered at the foot of Mt. Sinai. There amidst blasts of thunder and streaks of lightning, as some say – or maybe it was, as others teach, a moment of stunning, absolute silence – God granted our people the Torah. We name this sacred encounter revelation because God was revealed in that moment as was the wisdom of our Torah.

On Shavuot, we honor this moment in two important ways: First, during Shavuot services in synagogue, we recite the Ten Commandments. As important as the Ten Commandments were generations ago, they are just as, if not even more important, today.

Secondly, we celebrate Shavuot with the most delicious dairy meals. When we eat dairy, we think about the Israelites, who traveled 40 years to the Promised Land; a land flowing with milk and honey. (Exodus 3:8) Some also compare the Torah to milk, which is nourishing and helps us grow. Thus, during Shavuot, it is Ashkenazic custom to eat platefuls of blintzes with sour cream, oodles of noodle kugel, and generous helpings of cheesecake. In many Sephardic communities, however, you might find Jews indulging in soutlach, a Turkish rice pudding dish made from milk, honey, rose water and rice. Given that we are also celebrating the first fruits of the season, fresh, delicious fruit adds incredible colors, flavors, and some nutritional balance to our holiday meals, as well.

As we gather with family, friends and community this Shavuot, may we all be inspired to re-engage with Torah, recall our love and passion for Israel, and reignite our

commitment to Jewish learning and living!

What is Confirmation?

Confirmation is a Reform-originated ceremony for students that is tied to the Jewish holiday of Shavuot. It constitutes an individual and group affirmation of commitment to the Jewish people. Confirmation, one of the “youngest” Jewish life cycle ceremonies, began less than 200 years ago.

At its inception, confirmation reflected a graduation motif. After a specified period of study, students were subject to a public examination. The following day, in the rabbi’s presence, students uttered personal confessions of faith. The rabbi addressed the class, recited a prayer, and then blessed them. It was a simple service with no fixed ritual.

As confirmation moved from the school into the synagogue and as its ties to Shavuot strengthened, the ceremony became more elaborate.

In the early 1900s, confirmation took on an air of great pageantry, boys and girls wearing robes, bringing flower offerings to the bimah, and participating in dramatic readings and cantatas illustrating themes of dedication and commitment to Judaism.

Preparation for confirmation still included a period of study, but public tests and confessions of faith gave way to speeches reflecting a deeper understanding of Jewish teachings and values. Wide variations exist in congregational practice, from an elaborate synagogue service to a private individual ceremony with the rabbi. While 10th grade confirmation remains the norm in Reform Judaism, a number of synagogues now mark the event in 9th, 11th, or even 12th grade. Since the 1970s, adult confirmation programs have also gained popularity in many Reform congregations.

Remarks Presented at theAnnual Meeting of the Membership of Temple Sinai of Roslyn - 2019 I do believe this is the first annual meeting I’ve addressed on Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Memorial Day. I’ve worried that our commemoration of the Shoah is becoming more academic, more a history lesson than a genuine connection to the victims and survivors as our own kin, to state-sponsored genocide, and to a recognition of the antisemitism that is baked into the human drama in this world. This year, sadly, we don’t have to worry about that. The shooting at Chabad of Poway, exactly six months after the massacre at Tree of Life in Pittsburgh, robs us of the hallucination that all is well with the Jews in America.

In his masterful book Rising Out of Hate, Washington Post reporter Eli Saslow teaches that antisemitism is the original bigotry of White Supremacists. He writes that Jew-hatred fuels all the other hatreds, hatred of blacks, immigrants, Muslims, gays, and on and on. He also notes how pervasive and vast the network of White Supremacy is in this country, and how well organized. We can no longer view its murderers as lone lunatics.

So here we are, at the Annual Meeting of the membership of Temple Sinai of Roslyn in 2019, in a locked down building protected by highly trained security agents. Last night I spoke to a group of our 11th graders about how to process their fears. I could never have imagined that kids growing up in Roslyn would be afraid to walk into their temple.

And yet, we are not going anywhere.

As Elie Wiesel once said, “There are victories of the soul and spirit. Sometimes, even if you lose, you win. We have to go into the despair and go beyond it, by working and doing for somebody else, by using it for something else.”

Our presence here tonight, and every day and night, every Shabbat, every holy day, is our weapon of choice against the Neo Nazis and White Supremacists and their enablers. Our vibrancy, our energy, our planning for the future, the laughter of our children, our study of Torah, our songs---we will not back down from these blessings. And, so we gather not in despair, but to celebrate the victories of our souls. Temple Sinai of Roslyn in 2019.

First, I continue to be grateful to the amazing professional staff and clergy who are partners in this sacred work.

No congregation is better served than ours. Their gifts, passion, humor and warmth make Temple Sinai a leading congregation in the Reform Movement. But more importantly, this congregation is led by the most outstanding lay leadership—thoughtful, devoted to our mission, unafraid of asking hard questions, not a bit cowered by complacency, willing to meet the challenges of this fast changing Jewish community and take risks to ensure our future.

Rich Evans has been smiling and joking about his soon-to-be found freedom and more time at home. Vicki, on the other hand, has been begging me to find something else for him to do---I’m not sure what that means!

Rich has been a leader at Temple Sinai for years. In fact it’s hard to think of a program, an initiative, or an important decision without his imprint on it. We cannot underestimate the weight of responsibility borne by our congregation’s presidents. Rich has fulfilled his duties with extraordinary wisdom, strength, compassion, foresight and humor. I’ll have more to say at our installation service on Friday, June 7, but for now, Rich, thank you. Your counsel, your friendship and your partnership have meant the world to me. And all kidding aside, Vicki, thank you and the kids for sharing Rich with us. The Evans family is at the heart of us, and thank God, always will be.

Rich was assisted by an outstanding executive board, treasurer, legal counsel, committee chairs and past presidents and so many more. The ongoing, day-to-day running of this large, complex non-profit organization, with personnel issues, budget, legal and more is ably led by this outstanding body together with our professional team. We all owe them our deepest gratitude.

As I write this piece, our new board of trustees is getting ready to convene and elect new officers, led by Michelle Golden as our new president. One of the great gifts of my rabbinate in the past several years. has been watching Michelle’s leadership at every level, and she will be exactly the president we now need. Michelle is utterly devoted to Temple Sinai, and cares deeply about our congregation, its needs, its mission and, most especially perhaps, its people. Michelle brings to her office, strength, wisdom and deep, deep compassion and warmth. She has earned both our love, and our respect. Many of you have shared with me how excited you are to be led by Michelle as our president—our esteem for her is beyond measure.

Michelle ascends to the presidency at an exciting time. Renovations to our school, and later, our sanctuary, the expansion of early childhood education and more. We are most blessed that Michelle will guide us through these extraordinary transitions. We are grateful for Seth and for their amazing children who remind us that our future is bright.

And so, tonight we gather first and foremost as mourners. Homage paid to the victims of the Shoah, prayers for strength and comfort for the Jewish community of Poway. And yet, we are here to affirm that we will not give into fear. Even as we mourn what we have lost, we will win. We will win because we will continue to live our lives as proud lovers of liberal Judaism, today and tomorrow and for the future. This will be our response to Pittsburgh, and Poway, and Richard Spencer, David Duke and all the bigots and the politicians and talking heads who wink and nod in their direction. Love, Torah, Jewish prayer and celebration, engagement with our neighbors, teaching our children to embrace difference and to be proud that they are Jewish—this is the sacred mission we reaffirm tonight.

I am Michelle Golden, the newest president of Temple Sinai and proud owner of a minivan, my office for 17 years. My best thinking, planning, and problem-solving happen from the climate controlled luxury of the driver’s seat. I am honored, humbled and eager to continue this sacred journey with you. Our previous drivers have been knowledgeable, careful, and have always proceeded in a manner that kept their passengers safe.

Anyone who has taken a long road trip knows the value of having capable, cautious and aware drivers. My placement among these incredible leaders fills me with pride, hope, and courage.

Our most recent leader was Richard Evans. Being the Temple President is the number one volunteer role at a synagogue, and as such, Rich managed governance, financial oversight, and revenue generation, as well as community building, and strengthening of relationships. He has continued to lead us on our journey by avoiding potholes, keeping our vehicle in good running condition, and taking the route guaranteed to get us where we need to be so that the next driver can continue the journey. Today, we are well on our way, heading towards a future of innovation, transition and transformation; a result of Rich, and his predecessors’ insights, foresight, and defensive driving abilities. One of Rich’s many strengths as a leader was preparing his successor for the journey ahead. I was fortunate to have his confidence, guidance and most of all, support in the time leading up to switching seats.

Rich, on behalf of the board and the entire congregation, THANK YOU. The time you dedicated to Temple Sinai was a time you were not with Vicki, Jordan, and Robin. The meetings, services, and programs you attended were times you were not at the gym or work or enjoying friends and hobbies. You have given of yourself not just for the two years you were president, but for your 15 years of board service; you have earned some time to sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. I hope you find joy in your newest role as an immediate past president and that the road ahead is smooth with many beautiful views.

My predecessors would likely agree that their success as temple president was due in large part to the support they received from past presidents, board members, staff, our fabulous clergy, and of course, all of YOU! The conversations we have, the new initiatives we establish and the relationships we build all help drive us towards a prosperous and vibrant future built upon our personal and Jewish values. Our future is bright, and we have a long and successful history which propels us into this future with strength, hope, and inspiration.

As we begin this leg of our journey, please know that I am here for you. Reach out to me via email at mgolden@mysinai.org. Let’s grab a coffee, head to the track for a walk or indulge in some ice cream - but know I am here for the same reasons you are here. Temple Sinai is where my family has a home, and yours does as well.

With that in mind, I hope you will join us on Friday, June 7th at 6:45pm. Our services will be extra special as our Todah Rabah committee has organized a special blessing by Rabbi White for all of our healthcare professionals and it will be the official installation of your Board of Trustees. A beautiful Oneg Shabbat will follow services. I genuinely hope you will be there and that we can share a Shabbat cookie.

On a personal note, I have been blessed in my life to have support not just from friends that are like family here at the Temple, but from my family that shares my red minivan. My husband Seth and I have tried to be role models for Daniel, Rebecca & Sarah, and yet I find each day, I learn more about myself from how they navigate the world. Without them, I could not be the leader I aspire to be.

I wish you a summer filled with good times, sunshine and open roads.

Until We Meet Again In the grand lobby of Keneseth Israel in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania hung portraits of the senior rabbis that led the congregation over its 172 years. These curmudgeonly, two-dimensional men from the annals of congregational history glared down on me as I grew up. They watched my first-grade class frolic loudly through the halls. They greeted my family and friends at my mom’s conversion, and six months later at my Bar Mitzvah. And then, their familiar faces had an appropriate austerity, perhaps for the first time in my life, as my family gathered to mourn my grandfather. But even then, nearly two decades into our relationship, I didn’t know my rabbinic idol hung in one of those frames, watching over me all those years.

Rabbi David Einhorn was born in Germany in 1809 and emigrated to the United States in 1856 for a pulpit in Baltimore. Einhorn was a firebrand abolitionist, assuming a pulpit in pro-slavery Maryland. Five years into that pulpit, an angry mob surrounded his house in an attempt to tar and feather him. Guarded by friends, Einhorn and his family fled to Philadelphia to join my congregation. Apocryphally, Einhorn is quoted as saying, “A good rabbi always has his luggage packed.” He was a radical reformer, a premier Jewish intellectual, an outspoken activist, and a visionary prayer leader.

And yet, Einhorn’s lack of humility stifled his ultimate potential and his experienced success. Rabbi Einhorn never had the chance to see the American Reform Movement adopt his convictions even though, in the end, it was his vision and principles that took hold and blossomed into our movement today. Four months before he died in 1879, he was honored by fellow clergy who reflected on the “earnestness, honesty and zeal” that animated his heart.

If you have prayed with me, learned with me, or shared a meal with me over the past two years, there is a good chance you have experienced the earnestness, honesty, and zeal that animates my heart. But earnestness, honest, and zeal are ineffective rabbinic traits unless paired with humility, friendship, and guidance. You helped me understand that, Temple Sinai.

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing me the space to grow. As you all know, I am a dreamer, a boundary-pusher, and a persistent bull in a china shop. But dreaming needs a realist counterweight to be productive. You listened to my grandiose visions of what could be, encouraged my personal and professional development, allowed me to experiment, and gave me loving, honest feedback.

The lessons in humility you helped me grasp here are invaluable, and I am eternally grateful for them.

More than anything though, I am so grateful for our relationships. They have only just blossomed, and I hope they will continue to bloom and bear fruit for many years to come. Once your rabbi, always your rabbi.

I am so grateful to you, Rabbi White. I am also thankful for the rest of our incredible professional team. It has been such an honor to collaborate and dream with such a talented staff. Temple Sinai is in incredible hands.

As this chapter together concludes, I hope Rabbi Einhorn can offer us lessons for our respective futures: to follow a prophetic pursuit of justice and righteousness in a broken world; to dream boldly about the future of Judaism and find comfort in experimenting; to never stop learning and cross-pollinating technological achievements with our ancient tradition; and to pursue a Judaism that enriches our modern lives through radical reform.

Thank you for everything Temple Sinai! See you in Los Angeles!

2019 HIGH HOLY DAY RECIPROCAL TICKET REQUESTS High

The Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) suggests, where space allows, that members in good standing at Union congregations who will be in another community during the High Holy Days be welcomed to worship at a Temple in that community. Temple Sinai participates in this practice. If you are planning to visit relatives in other areas and would like to worship with them at their Temple, please contact Betty in the Temple office (516.621.6800) and she will request courtesy seating for you. If you have out of town relatives visiting you, please have them contact their own Temple and have them fax (516.625.6020, attention Betty) a request and she will take care of it.

Please be aware that we can only honor requests from members in good standing (you have paid your dues for 2019/2020). Additionally, this program is intended for out of town visitors, we cannot honor requests for members of local Temples or Synagogues (i.e. Western Nassau County). We want to be as accommodating as possible, however, please do not ask us to break the rules.

Meet Rabbi Ilana Schachter Temple Sinai’s New Associate Rabbi Rabbi Ilana Schachter will join Temple Sinai as our new Associate Rabbi on July 1, 2019. Rabbi Schachter will be replacing Rabbi Alex Kress, who is leaving to become the Reform Senior Educator at Hillel on the UCLA campus in California.

Rabbi Schachter brings a wealth of rabbinic experience to our community, most recently as Director of Community Building at Temple Shaaray Tefila in Manhattan. She has also served as Hillel Rabbi at both Loyola Marymount University and the University of Pennsylvania. Rabbi Schachter received her Bachelor’s degree in Comparative Literature and Judaic Studies with Honors from Brown University. She earned a Master’s in Hebrew Literature as well as rabbinic ordination at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, where she was awarded fellowships in global justice, executive training, interdenominational learning, and professional development. She served as Rabbinic Intern at major Los Angeles area congregations and is the author of numerous articles on Jewish life and learning. Most recently, Rabbi Schachter was selected to participate in the exclusisve Clergy Leadership Incubator, a two-year program that focuses on visionary leadership and innovative practice. The CLI program integrates the best thinking and practice in the field of synagogue transformation with the organizational tool kit developed by adaptive leadership, a discipline developed at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

“I am so looking forward to joining the clergy team of Temple Sinai, and to serve a dynamic, vibrant community that shares my passion for Jewish learning, worship and social justice,” says Rabbi Schachter.” In the coming months, I hope to connect with people individually, to hear the unique stories that make up our community, and to share more about myself with you.”

We are particularly inspired by Rabbi Schachter’s warmth, intellect, energy, engaging teaching and humor. She impressed our Rabbinic Search Committee, and others who were with her, including our teens.

We want to thank the members of our search committee: Jacqueline Covey, Michelle Golden, Howard Berrent, Amy Braunstein, Robyn Corbin, Rich Evans, Aaron Grotas, Caryn Hirshleifer, Andy Kraus, Holly Rosenthal, Adam Russ, Robyn Schreiber, Gil Vilkas, Robin Weiss, Leslie Wollin, Tracey Zimmerman, and all who supported them, including our teens who met with each candidate under Lulu Belferder’s leadership. Everyone took this most weighty responsibility very seriously and dedicated many hours, including evenings, to this effort.

We are very excited for Rabbi Schachter’s arrival and for her to join our community. She will be joined by her husband John Feuerstein and her children, Jacob and Aviva. We will keep you abreast as we prepare to welcome our new rabbi and her family so you can help us ensure a smooth transition for them and make sure that they feel at home here in our community.

Are you girls so proud of me?!

As you may recall I first heard about shakshuka at a Temple Sinai cooking class, and now this cooking challenged momma can create it herself (with a little help from Trader Joe’s, of course!)

What is Shakshuka?

An easy and healthy breakfast that is popular in Israel and other parts of the Middle East and North Africa, shakshuka is a simple combination of simmering tomatoes, onions, garlic, spices, and gently poached eggs. Shakshuka is so popular, that many consider it the national dish of Israel!

The literal translation of shakshuka is “ a mixture.� When asked to share her recipe, Randy Horowitz laughed out loud and said “Anyone that knows me knows that cooking is definitely NOT my forte! Trader Joe’s has now nicely put together a Shakshuka meal kit that includes everything for a non-cook like me (it is even kosher!) So I just followed the stove-top directions, added 2 fresh eggs as instructed, and wha-la: delicious Shakshuka!!�

The directions on the Trader Joe’s package suggest adding tahini, hummus, or feta cheese right before serving to make this dish even more irresistable! Try it for yourself and let us know what you think!

The Art of Herb Meyers The late Herb Meyers, a longtime Temple Sinai congregant, was a prolific

artist. Through the years, Herb gave the temple numerous pieces of his work,

some depicting scenes from Sinai, others, scenes from his life. Many pieces

have adorned the hallways surrounding the Simcha Room.

Now that we are renovating that wing of our building, we need to find new homes for Herb’s works. From Thursday, May 30 until Friday, June 7, the artwork will be available for our congregants to view and take home.

All we ask is that you make a donation to the Temple in return.

Dr. Deborah Lipstadt on Tuesday, April 28, 2020 at 7:30pm

Next April, Professor Lipstadt will be here to discuss her latest book, the very powerful Antisemitism: Here and Now, which examines the recent rise in Antisemitism in the United States, United Kingdom, and Europe. The book takes the form of a series of letters between Lipstadt and two fictional characters - a Jewish student and a non-Jewish colleague. It is a penetrating and provocative analysis of the hate that will not die, focusing on its current virolent incarnation on both the political right and left.

Dr. Lipstadt is probably best known for the libel lawsuit brought against her by David Irving, whom Lipstadt called a Holocaust denier. Lipstadt emerged victorious after the trial, which the (London) Daily Telegraph described as having “done for the new century what the Nuremberg tribunals or the Eichmann trial did for earlier generations.”

The New York Times said the trial “put an end to the pretense that Mr. Irving is anything but a self-promoting apologist for Hitler.”

After the trial, Lipstadt wrote the award-winning book History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier, which became the basis for the film Denial, starring Rachel Weisz. We will be screening the film next spring, leading up to Dr. Lipstadt’s appearance at Temple Sinai.

We are also thrilled to announce that Antisemitism: Here and Now will be Sinai’s Big Read selection for 2020.

May was a very busy month here in the Religious School! While the school year may have ended, that doesn’t mean that the fun has!

On Sunday May 5, Temple Sinai held its annual Mitzvah Morning. Everywhere you turned there was something going on – a collection for toiletries, book donations, a blood drive - you name it, we had it.

The Hevra and Hineni students gathered offsite at Sunharbor Manor to help bring some cheer to the residents.

Students worked on craft projects that would turn pens into little flower bouquets. Some students were so enthusiastic with their projects that they didn’t want to leave. Everyone had a great time and it was indeed a morning of Mitzvahs.

The next week marked the end of Religious School and included ice cream parties for our Torah Explorers (K-2nd grades), plenty of Ruach (Spirit) by our third graders, and a special Shabbat celebration for some of our fourth graders.

Holocaust and Jewish Resistance Course

For 18 consecutive years, the Religious School has offered sixth-graders the opportunity to study the Holocaust and Jewish Resistance. Students who enrolled in the course were required to attend classes with a parent, grandparent or other adult relative. This year, 15 students enrolled in the course and they, along with their parents, read books, recited poetry, conducted online research, completed written assignments, visited museums, viewed films and met with and listened to the testimony of many Holocaust survivors. There were also 10 adult congregants who audited the class. On Friday, May 3 at our Shabbat service, the students in this class conducted a moving and meaningful Yom HaShoah service honoring the Holocaust victims, survivors, rescuers and liberators. We are most grateful to Abbie and Richard Laskey, who have been honored for their work teaching about the Holocaust, for the gifts of their time, skills and passion in designing and teaching this course.

May was an important month for our 4th graders because they set out on their B’nei Mitzvah journey by attending the BMitzvah Orientation Program. In just a few short years, we will see all of them featured on these pages in the Scribe!

Caroline Faber’s Bat Mitzvah Project Caroline Faber has been actively working on ensuring that Gigi’s Playhouse Long Island becomes a reality for her Bat Mitzvah project.

Gigi’s Playhouse is a non-profit organization that works to educate and empower people who have Down syndrome and to increase acceptance of it. With over 40 locations, Caroline felt that New York City was too far for children from Long Island. A Long Island location would provide programs more locally such as therapy and exercise programs, sign language classes, gross and fine motor skill classes, teen gatherings, choral groups, parent support and career development for older people with Down syndrome.

Chanukah is also a story of courage becauses the Jewish soliders were outnmbered, but they fought off their enemies and won. Chanukah is also a very joyous and happy holiday and a fun time to spend with family.

Describe Yourself: I have a dog, one brother, a mother and a father, lots of cousins, and my grandparents. I really enjoy playing ice and roller hockey, and practice outside a lot. I have been playing since first grade. I also like spending time with my friends, my cousins, and my family.

The women of Friend of a Friend were very busy in April and May! 100 women shared an amazing evening together at the April 3 Intergenerational Women’s Seder. Cantor Elena led this service full of song and dance, and readings from the magnificent new Women’s Haggadah, created by the women of Temple Sinai.

Ladies’ Game Night on May 8 was a well-attended event. We played mah jongg and canasta, and enjoyed wine, appetizers, lots of laughs and prizes. At this event, in partnership with the Social Action Committee and Helping Hearts & Handbags, Inc., we collected handbags filled with toiletries for homeless women at Bethany House.

We enjoyed the final session of Wine, Women & Wisdom with a record number of attendees. Thanks to Cantor Elena for leading such an engaging conversation and thank you Samantha Rubin for hosting us all.
