Meet Lee Mirrer: Temple Sinai’s New Executive Director We first met Lee Mirrer when she was a regional manager for Bright Horizons. Her skills and experience in organizational development, human resources, marketing, and customer relations led to success in each of her positions. Since leaving Bright Horizons, Lee has been a consultant to Lindsay Dayan, Director of our Early Childhood Center. Both our lay and professional leadership have been most impressed by her leadership and expertise. We look forward to a wonderful relationship as Lee leads us into a bright future. Lee Mirrer is honored to be serving the congregational family of Temple Sinai in the role of Executive Director. She is passionate about inspiring members of all generations to live as actively engaged participants in our Jewish community. Lee is devoted to partnering with Temple Sinai members, clergy, lay leaders, and professional staff to provide meaningful experiences that continue to distinguish our synagogue. Lee brings a wealth of private sector executive experience to her role. Her transformational leadership approach is centered on championing mission-driven, high-performance teams that thrive on providing uniquely responsive experiences and building connected communities. Lee believes that the strength of our synagogue lies in the innovative ways in which we cultivate Jewish community and fortify Jewish identity beginning with our youngest children. Lee graduated from St. John’s University with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy. In her spare time, she serves as a coach and mentor to next-generation transformational leaders. Lee lives in East Islip and is a proud mom to her daughter Haley. We are most grateful to the members of the search committee, who enthusiastically chose Lee among many outstanding candidates. Allen Geller, Amy Braunstein, Jeff Sklar, Jana Grotas, Michelle Golden, and Steve Goodman ably led this effort. Temple Sinai is blessed with gifted and devoted leaders, and this process was most thorough and thoughtful.

SHabbat SERVICES RETURN TO THE SANCTUARY BEGINNING FRIDAY, JULY 2 AT 6:30PM! We are thrilled to finally be back in the sanctuary with our beautiful Temple Sinai community! Now that we have reached a new phase in curbing the spread of COVID-19, New York State has relaxed many of its restrictions so that in-person life can begin to bloom again. Temple Sinai’s Health & Safety Task Force has been working non-stop this year to keep our community safe. Below, please find the updated protocols regarding Friday night services: • There is no cap on the number of attendees allowed to attend. Reservations are not required. • No proof of vaccination = health screening + mask + social distancing required • Proof of vaccination = no health screening + no mask required. • Proof of vaccination must be in the form of a vaccination card or the NYS Excelsior Pass. • Attendees may show proof at the door, but we encourage advance submissions to improve efficiency. • Simply email a copy of your vaccination card or screenshot of your Excelsior Pass to templeoffice@mysinai.org • Unvaccinated individuals not wearing a mask, or not wearing it properly, will not be permitted to enter. Masks must completely cover the mouth and nose. Face shields are optional; they do not replace masks but can be worn in addition to a mask. • Sanctuary seating will be divided into two clearly marked sections: (1) Vaccinated, and (2) Unvaccinated. • Within the unvaccinated section, pews will be cordoned off in alignment with social distance regulations. Only those living in the same household may sit in the same pew. • Children between age 2 and the youngest age eligible for vaccination are required to wear masks. Unvaccinated children must sit with their guardian in the unvaccinated section, regardless of guardian’s vaccination status. • Masking for vaccinated individuals is strongly recommended in the lobby, bathrooms, and anywhere else that social distancing is not feasible. • The sanctuary will be sanitized for each service. • Single-use kippot will be provided. Communal tallitot will not be available for use; worshippers may bring their own. • Services will be livestreamed (the link can be found on our website home page at mysinai.org) for those who need/prefer to worship remotely. • There will be no oneg served during summer services. As a reminder, this is an ever-evolving situation, so we must remain flexible and adapt our protocols as required by emerging CDC/governmental guidance. We rely on the most recent rules for houses of worship as published by New York State. Please be aware that houses of worship have specific, stricter guidelines than other public venues, due to the significant aerosolization of the coronavirus while singing/chanting. Although this is a departure from how we have traditionally held Shabbat services, this format allows us to gather together in worship, while maintaining appropriate standards of safety. Thank you in advance for your adherence and your support. We look forward to seeing you back in the sanctuary!

High Holy Day Reciprocal Ticket Requests The Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) suggests, where space allows, that members in good standing at Union congregations who will be in another community during the High Holy Days be welcomed to worship at a temple in that community. Temple Sinai participates in this practice. If you are planning to visit relatives in other areas and would like to worship with them at their temple, please contact Betty in the temple office at 516.621.6800 and she will request courtesy seating for you. If you have out-of-town relatives visiting you, please have them contact their own temple and have them send a request via fax to 516.625.6020, attention Betty, and she will take care of it. Your guests will be expected to follow current New York State guidelines for attending services at Temple Sinai. Please see page 5 of this issue to review the current protocols for Friday night Shabbat services. Please be aware that we can only honor requests from members in good standing (i.e., you have paid your dues for 2021-2022). This program is intended for out-of-town visitors; we cannot honor requests for members of local temples or synagogues (i.e., Western Nassau County). We want to be as accommodating as possible, however, please do not ask us to break the rules. 6 SCRIBE July-Aug 2021

Caring Committee
of Temple Sinai
The world is sustained by three things: Torah, worship and loving deeds. - Pirkei Avot 1:2
During the past challenging months, many of our Caring Committee activities continued to serve our congregants. Our phone calls were very much appreciated by those we contacted. We telephoned Birthday greetings to our Seniors and sent Condolence, Get Well, and Mazel Tov notes. Whenever possible, we assisted congregants in a variety of ways. However, our wonderful series of Lunch and Learn events with Rabbi Schachter, (who would introduce us to a Judaic text,) were really missed by everyone. We are looking forward to once again announcing a future schedule of these events. We will then have wonderful opportunities to study with our Rabb and enjoy lunch with committee members and those congregants who are considering participating in the activities of this committee. For more information regarding joining this committee, please call the Temple Office, 516-621-6800.

TODAH RABAH FROM TEMPLE SINAI
Larry Krasnoff
Make the CONNECTion! You’ve probably heard the old joke: “What do they call the person who graduates from Medical School at the bottom of their class? The answer: “doctor.” So, where do you go to find a good doctor when you need one? You can check the telephone directory Yellow Pages (if you can even find a copy); my Yellow Pages of Nassau County has 19 pages of listings for “Physicians and Surgeons.” Or, you can check the computer; my search engine offers 386,000,000 results for “Physicians” alone. No help there. Most people will contact a relative, friend, neighbor, or like-minded associate and ask for a reference to a good doctor. The same process works whether you are looking for a good doctor, plumber, garage mechanic, baby-sitter, Chinese restaurant, or almost any other service or product. This is the essence of Networking: using known and reliable contacts for references when services are needed. The Brotherhood of Temple Sinai has taken this process one step further. It has established a terrific networking group, CONNECT, for all members of the congregation who are looking for opportunities to offer their professional services or to avail themselves of others who may offer reliable references to service providers. They have developed a list of available member services and the contact information for those who provide these services. CONNECT offers speakers who can provide suggestions for improving one’s professional career and acquiring business contacts. Capitalizing on the belief that “everyone knows someone who knows someone,” they can offer leads for any specific service required. They meet bi-weekly to reinforce the services that are provided by the members and to offer direction to those who require this service. By making this new, free service available to all congregants, the Brotherhood of Temple Sinai reinforces its mission to support the temple and its members. For more information and the schedule of virtual meetings, contact Richard Blatt, president of Temple Sinai Brotherhood, at brotherhood@mysinai.org. - Larry Krasnoff

TODAH RABAH FROM TEMPLE SINAI
Larry Krasnoff
After two Passover seders were canceled due to the pandemic, the Brotherhood of Temple Sinai was thrilled to finally be able to break bread with Rabbi Ilana Schachter! On June 15, 2021, the men celebrated the elimination of Covid restrictions in New York with a dinner meeting in the “tent” at Mim’s. This in-person, maskless meeting marked the “reopening” of face-to-face Brotherhood meetings and included a welcoming presentation by Brotherhood president Richard Blatt, an invocation by Rabbi Schachter, and a “reintroduction” by each of the Brotherhood members present. All acknowledged the welcome end of the Zoom era and the opportunity for in-person conversations and activities with longtime friends. All Brotherhood members are invited to the next monthly meeting to be held on Wednesday, September 1 at 7:30pm; location to be announced. Check your email for details.
