Rabbi Tarfon said: the day is short, and the work is plentiful...He used to say: It is not your duty to complete the work, but neither are you free to neglect it.
Rabbi Ilana Schachter rabbischachter@mysinai.org
The two passages from our sacred texts came to life for me and for several members of our Temple Sinai community this year, as we re-imagined our capacity to help others. In November, a small group of faith leaders from across Nassau County, including Temple Sinai of Roslyn, Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock, The Islamic Center of Long Island, and the Community Synagogue of Port Washington came together amidst the crisis in Afghanistan and asked how we could help those Afghan families who would soon be seeking refuge on our shores. We knew that this would be a significant under taking, but we believed that if we pooled our collective resources and leveraged our networks, we could make an impact. Together, we formed a coalition known as Upholding Humanity, and by December we had set to work. As thousands of refugees began their resettlement to the United States on Military bases, Upholding Humanity held a county-wide drive for clothing and medical supplies. In the coming months, we would develop relationships with several resettlement agencies in order to serve as a landing pad for refugee families as they began their resettlements in NY. With financial and in-kind donations from those in our communities, and with unequivocal support from UJA Federation of New York and the Shapiro Foundation, we collected what we needed for families. For over 8 months, volunteers from every one of our institutions, have worked tirelessly in the full resettlement of the families to whom we have pledged our support, helping them to find permanent housing, enrolling them in language classes, connecting them to jobs and educational opportunities, and more. More than that, the volunteers and leaders of Upholding Humanity have become a true community, with a shared commitment to help those in Theneed.words of Pirkei Avot remind us, however, that when it comes to the work of repairing our broken world, there is always more work to do. This summer, after months of witnessing with horror the war in Ukraine, we received word that Ukrainian refugees were beginning to resettle in the United States. After months of developing resources to help resettle refugees, Upholding Humanity was poised to help, and ever since has been working closely with HIAS in resettling families in Long Island.
Our Torah teaches that the Israelites’ most sacred space, the Tabernacle – where God would dwell among the people -- was the product of community participation, and was made possible by every single person being willing to share their gifts and do what they could. I have so been inspired by all of you who have stepped up and given from the heart toward this ongoing project, and I am grateful to see how we can continue to support those in search of refuge in our community. Together, as an interfaith coalition, we are building a new tabernacle, a dwelling place for those in need.
When we witness large-scale tragedy and brokenness in our world as we have this past year, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. But, this year Upholding Humanity has reminded me of how much each of us can do when we build community and work together.
- Pirkei Avot, 2:15-16
So the whole community of the Israelites went out Before Moses…all the men and women whose hearts moved them to contribute to the [tabernacle], brought items as offerings to God. - Exodus 35:20, 29 SCHACHTER’S study

My first trip to Israel was in 1985 with my parents and brother. I can vividly remember the experience and the many places we visited together. Israel was celebrating its 37th year of independence and one of the places we visited was Independence Hall on Rothschild Boulevard in Tel Aviv where the Declaration of Independence had been signed. I don’t think the significance resonated with me then as much as it did when I returned with my parents, brother, husband, and all of our children in 2013. I had become involved in Temple Sinai leader ship and my Jewish roots had truly taken hold of my life. Still a young country, Israel was full of life and excitement. We toured many historic sites, but Independence Hall truly stood out as a symbol of Israel’s independence and nationhood. It reminded me of visiting Independence Hall in Philadelphia, where the U.S. Declaration of Independence was signed. A few years later, our younger son, Michael, spent his summer working in Israel. His office was down the street from Independence Hall! He felt at home in Israel, and when we visited again, so did we. Israel was no longer a place to just go sightseeing, it was a place to live, work, and pray. As I look at my years at Temple Sinai, it is no longer a place to go to for a few holidays or a B’nei Mitzvah each year. Temple Sinai and its congregants became my extended family. This year, Israel turns 75 and so does Temple Sinai. Some of the founders of Temple Sinai are still among our beloved congregation, and this year, we celebrate together with themnot just 75 years of our past, but more importantly, our bright future. Our congregation remains strong as we have weathered the last few years through hard work, commitment to our values, and support from so many of our congregants. It is with great excitement that we will worship this Fall in our newly renovated sanctuary. It has been redesigned to bring us closer together in prayer, and more accessible for all. This project has been the lifeblood of many people dedicated to Temple Sinai. We thank them for making this project a reality. Our Construction and Decor Committees have worked tirelessly to reimagine our sanctuary into a modernized yet warm environment to pray. Our clergy has been active throughout the process, making sure that every detail aligns with our religious needs and requirements. 75 years after our founding, we are having our own re-birth of Temple Sinai.

This rendering provides a sneak peek into our vision for the new sanctuary, which was designed to be more welcoming and accessible to all.
Our Diamond Jubilee, celebrating 75 years of Temple Sinai will be filled with many events and opportunities to share in the celebration of this milestone. Our Board and temple leadership are actively working on programming to recognize this anniversary throughout the year. Our celebration will culminate in the Spring with our Diamond Jubilee Gala held in person (fingers crossed) at Temple Sinai. I look forward to enjoying this event with everyone and know that together, we will begin to support the next 75 years. Like Israel, Temple Sinai’s existence is always challenged, and as Jews it is our responsibility to commit to ensuring the future of both.
As I write this article, the high holidays are still a couple of months away, but I look forward with great anticipation and excitement to celebrating together with all of you. May we all be blessed to pray together this Fall and to celebrate Temple Sinai and Israel’s 75th anniversary together.

Wednesday, November 9 7:30pm In person at Temple Sinai KRISTALLNACHT PROGRAM TO FEATURE BRIAN MARCUS BOOK HONORING HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS
Originally published in 2016, Still Here took several years to produce. According to Marcus, the book’s goal is both to preserve the images and testimony of aging Holocaust survivors, and to promote Holocaust education. Speaking about the subjects in his book, Marcus says, The individuals in this book are now seven decades and thousands of miles removed from the atrocities they once endured….All of their vivid memories remind us of our moral imperative to prevent genocide wherever it festers in our world.
Marcus began his book project as a tribute to his grandfather, whom he admired on many fronts; including his focus on family, faith, and the future. Brian Marcus has pursued a long and successful career in photography, an art he learned at the knees of his grandfather and father.
KRISTALLNACHT
Marcus’ inspiration for his book came from his beloved grandfather, Fred Marcus, a Buchenwald survivor. To create Still Here, Marcus photographed more than 150 Holocaust survivors and WWII liberators in striking, black-and-white images. Meaningful quotes, elicited by author June Hersch, accompany each portrait to provide life lessons for future generations.
HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR PROGRAM
A respected businessman who runs a thriving, decades-old photography studio, Brian focuses on philanthropy as well as photography to chronicle events in families’ life cycles and to shine a light on important issues, he said. Please join fellow congregants for this important Kristallnacht commemoration. The event is open only to Temple Sinai members.
SPECIAL
Selfhelp’s services for Holocaust survivors honor the sacred pledge made by our founders: to serve as the last surviving relative to victims of Nazi persecution. This promise remains our imperative. Our overarching goal is to provide Holocaust survivors with the services they need so that they may live with the comfort and dignity they so richly deserve.
More than 80 years ago, on November 9, 1938, Nazi perpetrators destroyed Jewish homes, businesses and synagogues during Kristallnacht, or, “the night of broken glass,” throughout occupied Europe. Temple Sinai plans to commemorate that somber night this Fall in a program with New York-based, professional photographer Brian Marcus, who has published a book titled Still Here: Inspiration from Survivors & Liberators of the Holocaust The event, which will feature a presentation by Marcus and other speakers, will take place Wednesday, November 9 att 7:30pm. Joining Marcus will be survivor Sami Steigmann, who is featured in the book. Completing the panel will be a speaker from Selfhelp Community Services, a New Yorkbased social services organization that operates the oldest and largest program in North America to serve Holocaust survivors. Attendees will be able to purchase Still Here, and a book signing will take place after the presentation. All proceeds from the book sale will be donated to Selfhelp and its Holocaust educational mission.

A SUMMER WELL SPENT 14 SCRIBE Sept-Oct-Nov 2022
Back in February, when Russia invaded Ukraine, Cantors Sergei and Elena Schwartz felt the need to help deep in their souls. Both cantors are natives of Dnipro in central Ukraine, and many of their friends and family members still live throughout the country. With the Ukrainian language television news station running in the background 24 hours a day, the Schwartz’s came up with the idea for a live ZOOM concert featuring Russianspeaking Cantors from synagogues across the United States.
Feeling so great about all that was accomplished on his first trip, Cantor Sergei planned a return trip to Poland. This time, he would be accompanied by Cantor Elena, their son, Lior, and Temple Sinai member Ilona Mashkevich and her son, Lemmy.
A dozen cantors joined Cantors Sergei and Elena for the performance, and more than 500 households tuned in. Donations began to pour in. At the suggestion of Rabbi White, the Cantors reached out to their connections in Ukraine to get money directly into the hands of those who needed it most. The first people to benefit from the monies raised from the concert were members of Congregation Hatikva, Temple Sinai’s sister synagogue in Kyiv.
Over Passover, Cantor Sergei Schwartz went on a mission trip to Poland. While there, he volunteered at the Warsaw train station, he led Passover seders, he took refugees on shopping trips to replace the items they had to leave behind when they fled Ukraine, and he visited a refugee center in Lublin where he put on a musical program for the residents.
Most of the refugees Cantor Sergei met on his first trip to Warsaw had left to settle in new countries including Great Britain, Canada, Portugal, and Ireland. On this trip, the Cantors and Ilona spent a lot of time talking to the refugees, sharing their own immigration stories to show how settling in a new country can be their best chance for a better, brighter future.
Sadly, of the 12 million people who have relocated, at least 60% relocated within Ukraine due to a lack of funds. The Schwartz’s, through a charity organization called Pomohayen (which means we are helping), are donating funds to a refugee center in their hometown, Dnipro. In addition to providing counsel, they sang Ukrainian folk songs, which raised the spirits of the refugees. The Cantors and Ilona went shopping to purchase items for relocation including train tickets and suitcases. They even bought musical instruments for displaced professional musicians who need to be able to practice their craft. When their time in Warsaw came to an end, the group moved on to Krakow for an unforgettable mission - The Ride for the Living (RFTL). RFTL is a four-day experience that offers the participants the chance to immerse themselves in Krakow’s Jewish past, present, and future, while raising money to support the resurgence of Jewish life in Poland. The group took on the full schedule of activities which included a private guided tour of Auschwitz-Birkenau, tours of Krakow, and participation in Poland’s largest annual Shabbat dinner. Lior Schwartz and Lemmy Mashkevich also took part in the inspiring one-day 60mile bike ride from Auschwitz-Birkenau to the JCC in Krakow (in 95° heat!) The parents substituted the bike ride for a 5-mile walk. All the monies raised in this year’s Ride went to the Ukrainian refugees in Krakow. When the group returned to the U.S., Ilona’s husband, Greg, a plastic surgeon in Manhattan, revealed that in September, he is taking his entire office to Ukraine, where they will perform reconstructive surgeries on those wounded during the war. War can bring out both the best and worst in people, At Temple Sinai, we are certainly blessed to be surrounded by the most righteous of people who made this mission trip possible.

Temple Sinai has recently acquired a limited number of graves in our sections at New Montefiore Cemetery in the areas that were previously sold out. These have been graciously donated back to the temple by families who have relocated and find they can no longer use them. Rather than wait until it becomes a matter of some urgency, we want to give our congregants an opportunity to explore their options. We have groupings of up to four graves that can become family plots. If you are interested, please contact Betty Brandel in the temple office. Any questions you have are welcome.

Our children, our future
Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year at Temple Sinai Religious School! We cannot wait to open our doors to all of our students, faculty, and staff. For the first time since March 2020, we will all be back together in our spiritual home.
Cantor-Educator Elena Schwartz cantorelenaschwartz@mysinai.org
Thank you for your commitment to providing your children with a Jewish education. As Rabbi Hillel so wisely taught, there is an inexorable law in Jewish history: without Jewish learning, Judaism cannot survive. Jewish learning is a major component of Jewish life and there is a good reason that the Torah requires us to learn. As a people, we traveled around the world looking for a safe place to live. We have not always been allowed to take many possessions with us, but we always managed to take and preserve our Torah and traditions.
Cantor-Educator Elena Schwartz

At Temple Sinai Religious School we cultivate an environment that promotes Jewish learning as a cornerstone of our community and believe that we are a powerful partner for our families in raising Jewishly-grounded, moral, and intellectually curious children.

We give our children the building blocks of Jewish identity, and provide basic training for Jewish life. At Temple Sinai, we view Jewish education as a powerful tool that helps our students develop a sense of positive Jewish identity. Our administration, faculty, and temple lay leaders strive to ensure that our children enjoy a safe environment where they can learn, make friends, and have fun! We impart the beauty of Judaism as a way of life, a consistent source of joy, support, and inspiration; We draw from the lessons of the Torah to promote good relationships. Morals, ethics, and respect for all people are infused throughout our program. We work hard to ensure that our students aspire to the highest levels of ethical excellence. We involve every student in the continually unfolding drama of Jewish history. Our caring and devoted teachers seek to broaden our students’ Jewish experience and deepen their understanding of Judaism and strengthen their commitment to Jewish people.
This year, our overall theme is Jewish and Proud - All Day, Every Day. Each month, your child will learn a different facet of what it means to be a proud Jew: Pride in our traditions Pride in our accomplishments and our impact on the world Pride in Israel Pride in our acts of tikkun olam Pride in the joyfulness of being Jewish Pride in our strength and resilience Pride in our fairness and morality Pride in our history Pride in our spiritual home
As always, our program is enriched by the use of technology, music, art, and Jewish cooking. Our outstanding faculty inspire our students to think and create in both formal and informal Wesettings.can’t wait to get started! We look forward to welcoming you and your children the week of September 12.
We want to welcome back our returning families and give a special warm welcome to our new Temple Sinai families. We are excited to have you as part of our wonderful community.

We are committed to helping each of you find your place here within the Temple Sinai Teen Community. As we have grown up at Temple Sinai, we have been involved in engaging educational experiences, and various teen programs that have taught us how to be leaders in our community and given us opportunities to help others. One of these programs, Confirmation, allowed us to openly debate controversial topics and taught us how to stand up for our beliefs, which is an essential quality of a leader. Being able to think through tough topics and understand how Judaism informs our decisions were invaluable lessons. Along with Confirmation, other year-long programs like Havdallah for Hunger and Hand in Hand, have taught us to be grateful for what we have and to always think of others before ourselves. Programs like Madrichim and the SORTY Board, gave us opportunities to learn leadership skills as well. All of these offerings have helped to shape us as people, and have taught us the importance of being active members of our Jewish community. This year, there is a new program called Opening the Dor - where you will have the opportunity to learn about philanthropy with a Jewish lens, as well as work with adults from Temple Sinai in a giving circle. One of the best aspects of all of these programs is being able to participate and learn alongside your friends. We highly recommend that each of you find a program that fits your interests and schedule. You do not want to miss out on these incredible opportunities. Additionally, each year the SULAM Teen Programs offer travel opportunities, and this year there are three amazing experiences planned: Raise Your Voice (a lobbying opportunity in our country’s capital), the Tikkun Olam 10- day trip to Israel, and the NYC Overnight. All of these options are planned intentionally to maximize fun, community service, and exploring new places. These trips serve as bonding experiences, but also help you become a better person and leader. As SORTY presidents, we encourage all teens looking to get involved with the temple to join a year-long program, sign up for a travel experience, or participate in a one-off volunteer opportunity. We look forward to seeing all of you this fall.
Dear WelcomeTeens,Back!.

the sorty board a note from presidents
We are your 2022-2023 SORTY Board Presidents: Logan Grotas, Lemmy Mashkevich, and Lindsay Cohen. We are all excited to lead the SORTY Board this year, and we hope this community can provide all 8th through 12th graders with a place to grow and express yourselves.
Throughout our high school years, we have all participated in SULAM Teen Programs and have held leadership positions on the SORTY Board. Each year, these programs have provided opportunities for each of us to socialize with our peers, deepen our engagement with Temple Sinai, and have a meaningful connection to Judaism and its values. As seniors, this will be our final year participating in these programs and lead the SORTY Board, and our hope is to make 2022-2023 the best year yet!
