Great Talmudic Discussion
with Rabbi Michael White
SERIES ONE: Concludes December 13 or 14 SERIES TWO: March 14 or 15, April 11 or 12, May 16 or 17 My friend, Professor Aaron Panken of blessed memory, had a series of favorite passages from the Talmud, Judaism’s most authoritative legal code. Each week we will delve into one of these passages. Each is a fascinating look into how Jewish ethical and legal issues are debated. The conversation promises to be lively. No previous experience is necessary. Two series of three classes each: Mondays 7:00-8:00pm or Tuesdays 9:30-10:30am. 4 SCRIBE Dec 2021-Jan-Feb 2022

Minyan, Sinai Tribes, and the Power of a Micro-Community One of the many blessings I have as your rabbi is to lead the Morning Minyan every Saturday. While a weekly opportunity for worship, reflection, and study, this is more than a prayer space; the Minyan serves as a close-knit micro-community, where long-time regulars check in with one another, and where new faces are welcomed in. Such a community invites intimacy and vulnerability, where congregants feel safe sharing parts of their lives with those in the group: the blessings and the challenges, the joys and struggles. When someone is absent, the others notice and inquire. When someone is sick or grieving, the others show up. The Saturday Morning Minyan reflects the kind of community that I believe everyone is looking for when they join a synagogue, and what we want everyone to feel at Temple Sinai. And yet, we know that not everyone in our community is drawn to finding that community through worship or text study. This is why Temple Sinai launched Sinai Tribes in October with 60 participants, focused on increasing the opportunities for deep connection between our fellow congregants. These groups, led by members of our congregation, convene individuals around shared interests, curiosities, and stages of life. They bring people together who would have likely not connected otherwise, and they are creating new pathways for many more people to feel seen and heard at Temple Sinai. This inaugural cohort of Tribes included diverse topics, but every group has experienced the transformative power of the micro-community and the same intimacy and vulnerability that I see in our Saturday Morning Minyan whether the gatherings center around raising Jewish families or smoking the perfect brisket. One Tribe inspires
another, and another, and another. Participants currently in this round of Tribes are planning the next tribe that they want to lead next year. Registration for our next round of Sinai Tribes begins in January. If you have an idea for a Tribe you want to lead, please reach out to me or Adrianne Rubin. And, if you have not yet, I hope that you have a chance to find a Tribe that speaks to you. Rabbi Ilana Schachter

The Miracle of Chanukah This year, the High Holy Days were certainly different, but better than the year before. I am thankful to our clergy and temple staff for ensuring that our congregants felt safe and comfortable as we worshipped together. Now that winter is approaching, we begin to think ahead to the secular new year and hopefully, another opportunity to spend time with family and friends. In many ways, we can hope that each year will be a little better and a little brighter than the previous one. Chanukah has always been one of my favorite holidays, celebrating the miracle of a small group of Maccabean soldiers defeating the mighty Greek armies. I learned that although the Greeks were philosophers who accepted the Torah as a book of wisdom, they still made Torah study for religion and mitzvot such as Shabbat illegal. The Maccabees fought for Torah and were victorious! What we all remember is that the Maccabees returned to the Temple to find only enough oil to last one day, but the oil burned for eight days and nights. We commemorate this miracle each year with the daily lighting of the menorah, lighting one additional candle each night for eight nights. We celebrate with gifts, gelt, latkes, and love with family and friends. I recently read an article by Rabbi Aaron M. Lever about celebrating Chanukah during Covid. The article reminded me that these are often some of the shortest and darkest days of the year, but lighting the menorah fills the darkness with light. The pandemic has brought a different kind of darkness to all of our lives. Less time with family and friends. Burnout, stress, and social isolation. Fear of illness and too much time on ZOOM have taken a toll on all of us. Chanukah is our chance to light the candles and bask in the amazing light and warmth they provide. Rabbi Lever went on to recommend that each night we light a candle for something or someone we are grateful for and for those we love. I thought about this a lot and made my list. This year I will light a candle for my family. I feel so fortunate to have my parents, my brother and his family, my children, and my loving husband. I will light a candle for all of the health care workers, essential workers, and scientists, who have carried us through the darkest days to a time of hope.
I will light a candle for everyone we have lost from Covid and for their families. May their memory be for a blessing. I will light a candle for peace. We have seen too much division in our own country as well as around the world, and I pray that we can come together and focus on what is truly important. I will light a candle for good health. If we learned anything from Covid, nothing is more important than being healthy. I will light a candle for friendship. I feel blessed to have so many wonderful friends who provide support, love, guidance, and help enrich my life every day. I will light a candle for hope, joy, and compassion. We must remain optimistic and celebrate every blessing in our lives. I will try to always be compassionate to others, understanding their concerns and helping make their lives a little better. I will light a candle for Tikkun Olam. It is our duty to repair the world and make it a better place for all of us. This year more than any other, we should embrace those closest to us as we light the Chanukah candles and remember what is most important in our lives. We can all be the light and find our way out of the darkness that has surrounded us for the past year and a half. May the warmth of candlelight, the remembrance of miracles, a game of dreidel, a tasty latke, and time with family and friends make this Chanukah a special one to remember. WHO WILL WRITE Introducing SINAI W RLD JEWRY OUR HISTORY Film Screening and Discussion with Director Roberta Grossman Sunday, December 12 4:00pm via ZOOM
CONNECTION
Our new initiative - Sinai World Jewry Connection - was created in response to numerous requests from Temple Sinai members. The group will focus on continuing already existing relationships with reform congregations abroad, and will help us create new bonds with other communities in Israel, Ukraine, Russia, and Europe.
Who Will Write Our History is a 90-minute documentary film about the Oyneg Shabes Archive, an extraordinary achievement of self-study in the very depths of hell, documenting not only how the Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto died, but how they lived. The film is based on the book of the same name by historian Samuel Kassow.
These connections will be forged through education and networking - and they will allow us to expand and enrich our Jewish lives.
An award-winning filmmaker with a passion for history and social justice, Roberta Grossman has written, directed, and produced more than 40 hours of film and television.

It’s Been a Busy Fall at Temple Sinai Religious School! Bibliodrama: a form of role playing or improvisational theatre using Bible stories Developed by Dr. Peter Pitzele, a Harvard-educated former Literature teacher, bibliodrama has become a wonderful tool for bringing the Torah to life for children while actively engaging their imaginations. Temple Sinai Religious School is extremely fortunate to have actor/director/educator Gera Sandler join us on Mondays for bibliodrama with our students. Born in the former Soviet Union, Gera is best known in the United States for his portrayal of Esty’s father, Mordechai, in the hit Netflix series, Unorthodox. Gera feels fortunate to have added a new facet to his artistic career Jewish education through theatre. I am so lucky to have worked with Jewish organizations worldwide, including the Genesis Foundation and Yad Vashem, performing and teaching Jewish heritage though Torah stories and traditional tales, says Gera. It is my honor and privilege to share all of my knowledge with my students.

Lulu’s Teen Talk Lauren “Lulu” Belferder.
lbelferder@mysinai.org
It Was an Auspicious Autumn for Sulam Teen Programs! Sulam Teen Programs are off to a great start. As registration continues to roll in for our full-time courses, we have also had some really special opportunities and events for our teens to be highlighted. The confirmands from the 2020-2021 school year, shared beautiful words at a Friday night Shabbat service right after the High Holy Days. Each of these wonderful young men spent a year learning with Rabbi White and Rabbi Schachter. They engaged in deep conversations that ranged from topics like God’s role in our lives, forgiveness, as well as other scenarios that had them looking at ethical dilemmas. Each of them was able to choose a topic to write a piece on that shared their opinion and how it connects to their Jewish values. We hope you will join us at the end of this school year when we will be led in worship by this year’s Confirmation class. For many, this is one of their favorite services of the year - being able to hear directly from our teens about what they have learned and appreciated about their experiences is truly moving. October also brought us to our National Coming Out Day Shabbat. As Rabbi White shared on the bimah that evening, it is a sad fact that we need to highlight this as an event - but our teens take it seriously and share special readings throughout the service. Partnering with Kulanu this year’s incredible speaker, Peter Fishkind, made it even more special. The words that Peter and the teens shared that evening helped to inspire us all. Whether you are a member of the LGBTQIA+ community or an ally - it is so important to recognize the teaching of B’tzelem Eloheim (being created in the image of God). Each of us is special and unique in our own way and should be treated as such, no matter our sexual orientation or gender.
As we entered November, our teen leaders were digging deep to plan the SORTY Shabbat Service as well as the Chanukah Happenings event for the families of the younger members of our community. We look forward to seeing you at these events happening very soon: SORTY Shabbat Service - Friday, December 3, 2021 Chanukah Happenings - Sunday, December 5, 2021 Although we are not offering any travel opportunities this year - I am excited to share that during the February 2022 break, we will be offering daily community service opportunities. If you are around, we hope you will consider joining us for these wonderful experiences Please keep your eyes out for the registration emails. As always, the Teen Engagement Department remains available to discuss any of our programs or events. There is still time to enroll and begin your involvement with the incredible opportunities Temple Sinai has to offer our teen congregants, starting in 8th grade. Please do not hesitate to contact Lulu Belferder with any questions you might have. Wising you all a wonderful winter!

DID YOU KNOW? Temple Sinai has recently acquired a limited number of graves in our sections at New Montefiore Cemetery in the areas that were previously sold out. These have been graciously donated back to the temple by families who have relocated and find they can no longer use them. Rather than wait until it becomes a matter of some urgency, we want to give our congregants an opportunity to explore their options. We have groupings of up to six graves that can become family plots. If you are interested, please contact Betty Brandel in the temple office. Any questions you have are welcome. Donations to Clergy Discretionary and Other Funds A donation to any of the clergy discretionary funds requires a separate check. For each of these donations, please make your check payable to Temple Sinai of Roslyn with the specific discretionary fund written in the check memo line: Rabbi Michael White’s Discretionary Fund Cantor Sergei Schwartz’s Discretionary Fund Cantor-Educator Elena Schwartz’s Discretionary Fund Rabbi Ilana Schachter’s Discretionary Fund Donations to any other funds can be combined in one check made payable to Temple Sinai of Roslyn. Please remember that if you use a company or similar type check, your name should appear on the check so we can properly credit your account.
HONOR YOUR LOVED ONES WITH PLAQUES AND LEAVES Leaves on the Tree of Life are for those special family simchas: births, marriages, B’nei Mitzvah, anniversaries, etc. The cost of each leaf is $1000. Memorial Plaques honor the memories of our loved ones who have passed away. They are in the hallway leading to the sanctuary. Cost of each plaque is $700, which includes a second version to be put up for your loved one’s yahrzeit. Please contact Betty Brandel in the temple office at 516.621.6800 for more information or to place an order.
