CHANUKAH BLESSINGS Candles are added to the chanukiah (menorah) from right to left but are kindled from left to right. The newest candle is lit first. On the Shabbat of Chanukah, kindle the Chanukah lights first and then the Shabbat candles.

Light the shamash (the helper candle) first, using it to kindle the rest of the Chanukah lights. As you do, say or sing:

A Year of Books That are Perfect Last Minute Gifts I am currently reading a book that has profoundly changed my understanding of Judaism. It’s written by Israeli novelist Amos Oz and his daughter Fania Oz-Salzberger and is aptly named Jews and Words. The book argues that the primary Jewish legacy passed down from generation to generation – more than our rituals or theology or worship – is our texts. So in lieu of the traditional form, I thought I’d share some of my favorite books that I read in the past year that constitute the continuation of that cherished legacy.

The Rise and Fall of Adam and Eve by Stephen Greenblatt For such a famous story, this book left me feeling like I didn’t know Adam and Eve at all.

This masterful journey through history shows the evolution of Adam and Eve in religion, culture, and art. However, my most lasting impression of the book comes from Islamic exegetes who imagine a beautiful camel with a multicolored tail, in place of the famous serpent, that tempted Eve. That would’ve made for some great art.

Who’s This Book For: The History Lover Forest Dark by Nicole Krauss Forest Dark intricately weaves Jewish text into a mind-bending novel that completely consumed me. As someone who has spent much time in Israel, Nicole Krauss brought to life the smells, sounds, and tastes of Tel Aviv. Perhaps more than anything, though, Krauss demonstrates what the next generation of Jewish text looks like. By weaving a thread that started with Abraham and continued to King David, on to the Kabbalists in Safed, through the works of Franz Kafka to the pen of Nicole Krauss, we get a sense of the thesis of the father-daughter Oz team: our most important legacy is our text, including this book.

My Jewish Year: 18 Holidays, One Wondering Jew by Abigail Pogrebin I love this book for so many reasons. First, Abigail Pogrebin jumps into the deep end of Jewish observance. As a Reform Jew, it’s not that she doesn’t have reservations about finding meaning in minor fasts or what a year-long, strict observance will do to her family; she does. She jumps in anyway. Second, she spends a year celebrating with some of the smartest rabbis of our day. This book is unfettered access to bright minds who will surely make your holidays more meaningful.

As Rabbi Joseph Telushkin writes, this book is “a super point-of-entry for anybody who wants to bring Jewish holidays into their lives, and a great refresher course for veterans who need their holidays re-energized. Pogrebin’s style is engaging, and her insights are deep.” Amen.

Who’s This Book For: Everyone, The Adventurous, The Newly Converted or Thinking About Conversion Nurture the Wow by Danya Ruttenberg After following Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg on social media for years, I decided to buy her book. It was one of the best decisions I made this year. As a young parent, it is so easy to get bogged down in the frustrations of parenting. When that feeling accumulates, you end up missing so much of your children’s lives. Nurture the Wow helps young parents avoid that trap and find joy, meaning, and “spirituality in the frustration, boredom, tears, poop, desperation, wonder, and radical amazement of parenting.”

Who’s This Book For: The Young Parent All Who Go Do Not Return by Shulem Deen Of all the books I read this year, I read this one the quickest. I could not put it down and read it in a matter of 48 hours. This memoir tells the story of a Hasidic man in an incredibly insular sect called the Skverers. He knows very little about the outside world but becomes curious. First, he listens to the radio, then takes a trip to the library, and then the internet. This portrait of life inside – and then outside – the Hasidic world envelops you. You laugh, you cry, you’re on the edge of your seat, and you gain an understanding of the value of liberal Judaism.

“The First Jewish Artist” Though many of us may not be familiar with his name, Moritz Daniel Oppenheim is considered the first Jewish artist of the modern era. Born in 1800 into an Orthodox family in Hanu, Germany (near Frankfurt), Oppenheim began studying at the Munich Academy of Arts at the age of 17 before furthering his artistic training in Paris and Rome. Such opportunities were unheard of for Jews at the time; as such, Oppenheim was not only the first Jewish artist to receive classical training, but also the first to gain exposure to the contemporary art of his day.

The emancipation of European Jewry took place during Oppenheim’s German, 1800–1882 The Kindling of the Hanukkah Lights lifetime. Notably, unlike other Jewish artists before the emancipation, 1880 Oppenheim refused to convert to Christianity to ease his career path, yet Oil on canvas he still gained acceptance into and recognition from non-Jewish German society. Previously, a Jewish artist’s work was confined to his own insular community.

Oppenheim was successful by the time he was in his twenties, painting portraits of both Jews and gentiles. From the 1830s through the 1850s, he was the portraitist of the Rothschild family. He also painted portraits of Joseph II of Austria, Holy Roman Emperor, who argued in favor of the integration of Jews into larger (i.e. Christian) society, and Moses Mendelssohn, the German-Jewish philosopher, who also fought for the civic liberation of the Jewish people in the eighteenth century.

Beyond portraits, Oppenheim’s body of work is replete with scenes of Jewish culture and customs. He sought to represent Jewish life in the finest way possible – and with great pride – in an effort to dispel the negative assumptions of his non-Jewish audiences and to embrace his own identity. He often portrayed family scenes, since the popular belief at the time was that family life equated to morality. Similarly, Jewish learning was a recurring theme throughout his work, to counter the common misconception that Jews were uncultured. Perhaps most importantly, Oppenheim also depicted the social and political struggles Jews faced both before the emancipation of European Jewry and after, when they were trying to assimilate into the larger society.

Exciting Plans for 2019!

Dear Temple Sinai Families: It is with great excitement that I deliver the news that beginning in the 2019-2020 school year, Temple Sinai will be partnering with Bright Horizons, a national provider of exceptional infant care, allowing for an extension of our existing Nursery School program.

Our partnership with Bright Horizons will enable Temple Sinai to offer: • INFANT CARE and EXTENDED HOURS to our families • A RENOVATION of our school’s facility • The option of HEALTH & PENSION BENEFITS for our Nursery School faculty Best of all, what is known and loved about Temple Sinai’s Nursery School will remain the same. To be clear, Bright Horizons is not taking over our Nursery School - we are partnering with them to be able to expand our offerings.

We are incredibly proud to begin providing high quality Jewish education for families just as they become families. Bringing babies into our program will enable us to welcome parents into our community earlier, to strengthen their connection to Judaism as well as their affiliation with Temple Sinai. We are also thrilled to be able to offer an “extended day” option that will meet the needs of parents who require those longer care hours, such as those who both work outside the home full-time.

This is all in addition to the 9:00am-3:00pm option that our current families enjoy. Never before has our Nursery School been able to meet the needs of such a wide array of Jewish families in the area.

So far, we have held two information sessions for our current Nursery School families to detail for them what will change and what will stay the same. Our ever-growing parent task force has also convened several times and will continue to do so. Parent input is invaluable to us in this process and we are pleased to have so many dedicated voices in the conversation.

Of course, our Nursery School Director, Debbie Neuschatz, and I, are excitedly preparing for this transition as well. Debbie’s warmth and enthusiasm permeate every conversation about this transition and it’s no wonder why our Nursery School parents love her so much. The new families that we engage will be warmly embraced by her as she guides them through the beginning of their Jewish Journey with us. Still, our capacity for enrollment is limited; our school will remain capped at 110 children, as it is now. Our exceptional faculty, one of our greatest assets, will also remain the same. We will preserve the intimacy and sense of family, where every child and every family is known to our teachers and Debbie by face, name and circumstance.

It is an exciting time for us here at Temple Sinai. We are enthusiastic about our partnership with Bright Horizons and the exceptional accomplishments that we will achieve together. I encourage you to reach out to me if you would like more information.

Get to Know ...

Mitzvah Makers is the long-term community service component of the B’nei Mitzvah Project. Temple Sinai Religious School provides our 7th Graders a variety of projects they can choose from. Before and after putting in their volunteer hours, the students will engage in service learning to forge deep connections between their volunteer work and Jewish traditions.

Here’s what Audra Groveman, Mitzvah Makers Coordinator, has to report on two of our students projects: Mitzvah Makers are off and running with a passion to make a difference! Tikkun Olam is certainly in the air.

Our students are showing they’ve got what it takes to make the world a better place!

Two of our students have already begun their projects by setting up collections for causes that have impacted their families.

Spencer Penn lost his grandfather to melanoma before he was even born. Since then his family has actively been involved in funding a research foundation to fight the disease. Spencer has chosen to tie his Mitzvah project to this, as it is close to his heart. He will be organizing a collection for sunscreen and skin protection for families in need.

Tyler Green and his family feel very strongly that lots of families are in need of warm clothes. They have discovered that one of the most needed items are warm socks! Having warm cozy feet can warm the whole body.

Therefore, Tyler will be collecting new socks and donating them to the INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network) to help those families!

Mitzvah Makers are off to a great start and we are sure to see more wonderful projects and commitments from our students in the days to come, so, stay tuned for more G’milut Chasadim!

Our Hineni and Hevra students have had a busy fall performing acts of G’milut Chasidim, acts of loving kindness.

In October, our students carried out the mitzvah of gleaning (which means to harvest or collect) at the Garden of Eve Organic Farm in Riverhead, when they picked fruits and vegetables that were donated to the food insecure.

On November 6, our Hineni students learned the mitzvah of Bikur Cholim, the mitzvah of visiting and extending aid to the sick, when they welcomed the Sunrise Association to Temple Sinai. The mission of the Sunrise Association is to bring back the joys of childhood to children with cancer and their siblings through their Sunrise Day Camps, year-round programs, and in-hospital recreational activities, at no cost.

On Veteran’s Day, Hineni students and their families carried out a variety of mitzvot including Leket, Shikhehah, and Peah, by helping the less fortunate for a Thanksgiving Food Drive.

Describe Yourself: I love to play soccer, tennis, and basketball and I love to spend time with my friends. Reading and writing have always come easily to me but I love the challenges associated wtih math and science. During the summer, my heart belongs to Camp Towanda.

Why is Becoming a Bat Mitzvah Important? Becoming a Bat Mitzvah means taking on the responsibilities of a Jewish woman, including fasting on Yom Kippur and participating in more Jewish activities because I want to, not because I’m told to do so.

Lucky Jewish Foods to Start the New Year Off Right

The superstitious among us believe that eating specific foods to ring in the secular New Year will bring good luck and success in the days, weeks, and months ahead.

Whether or not you’re a believer in superstitions, why not put a Jewish spin on some of these traditional New Year’s foods? It couldn’t hurt!

1.

In Mexico, Poland, Hungary, and the Netherlands, ring-shaped cakes represent coming full circle.

This savory, decadent, spicy bundt cake is ideal for the cold winter months. Celebrity Chef Jamie Geller says this cake, which is topped with a bourbon pecan glaze, is the perfect ending for Shabbat dinner.

DECADENT MOLASSES SPICE BUNDT CAKE FROM JAMIE GELLER YIELD 12 servings PREP TIME 10 minutes BAKING TIME 45 minutes

INGREDIENTS

2 -1/2 cups all purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice 1/2 cup granulated sugar 2 sticks margarine or butter substitute 2 large eggs 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1 cup unsulfured molasses 1/2 cup hot water 1/2 cup confectioner’s sugar, sifted 1 tablespoon bourbon 1 Tablespoon water 1/4 cup coarsely chopped pecans

DIRECTIONS

Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease a 3.5-quart capacity Bundt pan with cooking spray.

In large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg and allspice. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, combine sugar and margarine. Beat on medium speed for 3 to 5 minutes or until creamed and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, allowing each to fully incorporate. Add vanilla and stir to combine. Slowly add dry ingredients and mix well to combine, scraping down the sides of bowl. Add molasses and hot water and mix just until completely combined.

Pour batter into prepared Bundt pan and bake 40 to 45 minutes or until a cake tester comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes in the pan. Invert onto a wire rack and cool completely.

In a small bowl, stir together sugar, bourbon and water until smooth. Pour over cake and let sit 10 to 15 minutes or until glaze hardens. Sprinkle with pecans and slice to serve.

Spread some spiced fig preserves on challah for a little slice of heaven!

SPICE FIG PRESERVES FROM TORI AVEY YIELD 18 servings PREP TIME 15 minutes COOK TIME 15 minutes

INGREDIENTS

2 pounds fresh figs, trimmed and cut into small pieces 3/4 cup dark brown sugar (or more to taste) 1/2 cup orange juice 6 allspice berries 2 cinnamon sticks 2 cloves 1 small knob of fresh ginger, peeled You will also need a Large sauce pot, cheesecloth, twine

DIRECTIONS

Place allspice, cinnamon sticks, cloves and ginger in a square of cheesecloth and tie closed securely with a piece of twine (make sure it’s tightly closed so your spices don’t leak out!).

Be sure that one end of the twine is long enough to tie around the handle of your pot. This will make it much easier to remove the spices from the hot preserves.

In a large sauce pot, combine figs, brown sugar and orange juice. Add the spice bag to the pot, tying one end of the twine around the pot handle. Stir.

Cook mixture at a medium simmer, stirring frequently, till the mixture thickens and groups of large shiny bubbles begin to appear on the surface, about 15 - 20 minutes.

Remove spice bag and allow preserves to cool. Transfer to a jar or container and refrigerate. Preserves will last for about 2 weeks. Use a sterile canning process for longer shelf life.

POMEGRANATE CHAMPAGNE SORBET FROM BECKY HARDEN - THE COOKIE ROOKIE PREP TIME 5 minutes COOK TIME 1 hour

INGREDIENTS

1 1/2 cups brut champagne 1 cup sugar 1 Tablespoons light corn syrup 1 3/4 cups pomegranate juice whipped cream and arils for garnish (optional)

DIRECTIONS

Heat champagne, sugar, and corn syrup in a small saucepan on medium/high heat. Bring to a rolling boil, making sure all the sugar dissolves and stirs in.

Remove champagne from heat and stir in pomegranate juice.

Place in the freezer for 2 hours to chill completely, (or place in the fridge overnight) Once cold, pour the mixture into your ice cream maker and use according to package instructions. Mine took about an hour to be done.

Spoon completed sorbet into a freezer friendly container and freeze until ready to serve. It’s best to freeze 4-6 hours so it firms up enough.

Serve with whipped cream and pom arils if desired.

In Japan, long noodles represent long life

Made too many noodles? Use the leftovers to make this modern take on the latke.

RAMEN LATKES WITH SRIRACHA MAYO FROM THE NOSHER INGREDIENTS

For the latkes: 2 – 3 packs instant ramen noodles, cooked and drained 1 egg 1 Tablespoon garlic powder canola oil for frying DIRECTIONS 1/2 cup soy sauce Cook the ramen noodles as directed on the back of the package making sure to omit any flavor packets it came with.

For the sriracha mayo: Drain and place in a bowl. Cover and cool for roughly 1 – 2 1 – 1.5 teaspoon Sriracha hours minimum.

1/2 cup mayonnaise green onions, sliced Once cool, mix noodles with one egg and the garlic powder.

Divide the noodles up either in large muffin tins or ramekins, if you have them. Or, divide them up amongst a variety of small bowls and glasses. You do NOT want to make these more than 1 inch of thickness so if using something other than muffin tins or ramekins, be careful of how many noodles you stack in there.

Place divided noodles in the refrigerator uncovered. Let cool for a minimum of 2 hours and a maximum of 10.

Once your refrigeration period is done, heat 5 Tbsp of canola oil in a small frying pan (I do recommend frying these one at a time). Test the oil to make sure it’s hot by splashing a small drop of water into the oil. If the water sizzles, you’re ready.

Drop one ramekin of noodles into the hot oil and reshape into latke shape. Let fry for roughly 2 – 3 minutes and then flip. Add 1 tsp of soy sauce to latke after the first flip. Cook on the other side for another 2 – 3 minutes. Repeat until nice and brown for a total of roughly 6 – 8 minutes each.

Remove latke from pan and let dry on a plate lined with paper towel.

To make the Sriracha mayo: combine Ssriracha and mayo in a bowl. Taste as you stir, adding more according to your preference. Serve a dollop on top of each latke and sprinkle with sliced green onions.

Note: these can be refrigerated for up to two days. If needing to stack the latkes in order to refrigerate, make sure you place wax or parchment paper between latkes so they do not stick together. Reheat in the over at 400 degrees for 5 – 8 minutes max.

This sweet tart winter salad is a simple way to add elegance to a weeknight dinner.

ARUGULA SALAD WITH ROASTED BUTTERNUT SQUASH, CRANBERRIES, AND CANDIED PECANS FROM THE HADASSAH EVERYDAY COOKBOOK: DAILY MEALS FOR THE CONTEMPORARY KITCHEN YIELD serves 6-8

INGREDIENTS

1 1⁄2 cups butternut squash, peeled and cut into ½-inch cubes 5 Tablespoon. olive oil, divided Sea salt 2 Tablespoon butter 2 Tabelspoon. brown sugar 1⁄2 cup pecans 2 Tablespoon red wine vinegar 2 teaspoon honey Freshly ground black pepper 6 cups arugula leaves 1⁄2 cup dried cranberries

DIRECTIONS

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In a bowl combine squash cubes, 1 tablespoon olive oil and sea salt to taste, mixing thoroughly to coat squash with oil. Transfer squash to a rimmed baking sheet and roast for 20-25 minutes, until soft. Remove from oven and let cool.

Meanwhile, melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Once bubbling, stir in brown sugar, followed by pecans. Sauté pecans, stirring frequently, until coated with mixture, 7-10 minutes.

Remove from heat and allow to cool completely.

Whisk vinegar, honey, remaining 4 tablespoons olive oil, salt and pepper to taste in a small bowl. Assemble salad: Combine arugula, squash, pecans and cranberries in a large bowl, drizzle dressing over and gently toss.

TEMPLE SINAI TEEN PROGRAMS Temple Sinai of Roslyn, NY Director of Youth Engagement Participates as a Mentor in Exclusive North American Fellowship for Youth Development to Strengthen Congregational Youth Engagement For the second year, Temple Sinai of Roslyn is proud to have Lauren (Lulu) Belferder, working as a mentor to new youth professionals from Reform congregations in North America participating in the Youth Professional 101 Fellowship (YP101) hosted by the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ).

This unique program brings together full and part-time youth professionals in the first two years of their careers to learn with experts in the field, such as Lulu, create a peer-to-peer learning group, and explore how to create meaningful and sustainable youth engagement models in their community. By participating in this initiative, Lulu has the opportunity to share her knowledge and skills for building strong youth programs and providing impactful youth experiences for teens in 6th through 12th grade.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with new youth professionals, and to contribute to this important field,” says Lulu. “I am reminded each day how important this work is by the interactions I have with our lay leaders, the meaningful conversations I have with the teens and the fun planning of programs with my fellow staff members. Having the opportunity to encourage and guide new professionals in our field is so gratifying and inspiring.”

The learning and networking program runs from September 2018 through May 2019.

The URJ’s Director of Learning and Innovation Michelle Shapiro Abraham oversees the YP101 fellowship with learning sessions led by Dr. Michael Zeldin. In addition to Lulu. the other YP101 Fellowship Mentors are Michael Fuld, Bobbee Griff, Youth Advisor at Temple Beth Tikvah in Roswell, GA, Andrew Paull, Director of Teen Engagement for Temple Shaaray Tefila in NY, NY, Loal Isaacs, Director of Youth Philanthropy at the San Francisco-based Jewish Community Federation, Andy Harkavy, Director of Congregational Engagement for Temple Beth El in Charlotte, NC and Erin Wynn, Director of Youth and Family Programs at Temple Chai in Phoenix, Arizona.

“With YP101, the URJ will continue to deepen the capabilities of our strong network of youth professionals to enhance and increase the capabilities, reach and diversity of our teen programs. This type of professional development is a core priority of our youth engagement strategy, as we work to inspire more young Jews to embrace Jewish life as a path to meaning, purpose, and joy,” said Miriam Chilton, URJ Vice President of Youth.

“Professional development is such a critical part of the URJ’s work making a strong and lasting impact on Jewish youth, now and into the future. This cohort is a most impressive group of talented professional leaders, and their work together will make their efforts even stronger,” said Shapiro Abraham.

Todah Rabah to everyone participating in Sinai Stitches!

Here at Temple Sinai, we have an amazing group that comes together each month with a very special purpose. In addition to spending time enjoying each other’s company while knitting and crocheting, they teach each other, support each other in friendship and give meaningfully to our community in many ways.

For several years now, they have continually supported premature infants hospitalized in Cohen Children’s Medical Center with hats and blankets and made knitted “toys” for the siblings of those infants. They have warmed the elderly at both Sunharbor Manor & Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care and Rehabilitation with beautiful soft blankets. Knitted hats for the soldiers of the IDF were made and personally delivered by our congregants on their recent trip to Israel.

The hats are worn under their helmets in order to prevent heat loss while on duty. They each stitched squares and combined them to make a quilt to show their love to Bea Kandel, a longtime friend to so many of us, for her to have a constant reminder of our love & friendship.

Most recently on October 18th, Lainie Krasnoff ran a class sponsored by Friend of a Friend/Chaverot, “Little Hats, Big Hearts.” It was a way to both learn to knit and do a mitzvah. Those learning to knit and those with experience participated. Red baby hats knitted that day and in the future, will be donated to the American Heart Association.

On behalf of the entire congregation, we thank you for the kindness, warmth and gifts from the heart that you all continually give in order to make so many lives better.

FROM THE CARING COMMITTEE Temple Sinai’s Caring Committee continues to assist members and their families during times of need, illness and loss. Of course, we are delighted to acknowledge simchas.

We are looking forward to our “Lunch and Learn” programs. These will be held on Wednesday, March 27 and Wednesday, May 15 at noon in the Library. Rabbi Kress will introduce us to Judaic texts and lead us in wonderful discussions. Please save these dates.

During the year, we often join with other Temple committees to assist with their events. These may include assembling Bags of Cheer that are used when visiting members who are in hospitals or confined to their homes, preparing welcome baskets for our new members, and delivering Purim bags.

HONOR YOUR LOVED ONES WITH PLAQUES, LEAVES, AND BRICKS Leaves on the Tree of Life are for those special family simchas: births, marriages, B’nei Mitzvah, Anniversaries, etc. The cost of each leaf is $1000.

Walkway Bricks for our Nursery School Playground are also available for special family simchas for our youngest congregants. Births, nursery school graduation, birthdays, and more. The cost of each brick is $350.

Memorial Plaques honor the memories of our loved ones who have passed away. They are in the hallway leading to the sanctuary. Cost of each plaque is $700, which includes a second version to be put up for your loved one’s yahrzeit.
