Since I wrote my last SCRIBE article at the end of March our world has changed so much. Rather than write about Covid-19 or racism, I am choosing to write about the rebirth of challah during this crazy time. For me, that has been one of the best parts about being in the Q for me. The art of making and baking challah has spread like wildfire.

Let’s discuss the current state of affairs regarding baking ingredients. I am going on record to single-handedly take credit for the run on yeast and flour! Undoubtedly, my “sold out” Temple Sinai challah bakes have created this chaos across the country (or at least in Roslyn LOL). I like to think that my love and obsession with challah is what caused this shortage. My challah hotline has been ringing off-the-hook along with the constant sound of text alerts and email notifications, all relating to baking challah. Women, who only used to purchase store-bought challah, are now obsessed with baking the perfect braid; their husbands are joining in and their kids also want to give it a try. It’s both a revolution and a revelation!

It feels as if this time was created for us to become more aware of just how satisfying both challah baking and Shabbat can be. It is a time to bond, to learn, to share.

Challah is the catalyst for Shabbat in the modern home.

The process starts early in the morning with the yeast and continues throughout the day. This allows for children to be part of the process, whether for just one step or all of them.

Sometimes, my boys only want to mix, or braid, or play with the flour, or just eat it! My hope is it will be a memory that they cherish and will include in their own homes one day.

For so many, this time in isolation has brought back the spirit of Shabbat; bseing together, uninterrupted for a family meal. While I may not be responsible for this trend, I hope it will continue in our homes long after the pandemic is over. As always, I invite you all to give it a try. Until then, I will continue to keep calm and challah on!!!

Marli and Olivia Jacobson, twin sisters who will become B’not Mitzvah this November, are seeking the congregation’s assistance with their mitzvah projects

There are many themes in our Torah portion, Parshat Chayei Sarah, but one in particular stood out - the theme of carrying on traditions. Since the pandemic began, I realize how important it is to keep traditions. They might look a little different, but our traditions have helped my family make our quarantine time both meaningful and fun. We have celebrated holidays, birthdays, milestones, and special events, all while maintaining traditions that have been part of my family for years. We have even established some new traditions which I will pass down to future generations.

For my mitzvah project, I wanted to help others to keep traditions alive. Since mealtime is such an integral part of our everyday lives, I’ve decided to make an email cookbook filled with your family recipes to share with the Roslyn community. To submit your family recipes and be included in this special community project, please email oejacobson@gmail.com. It would be great for you to include one or two sentences as to why your recipe(s) is/are important to your family. Please let me know if you prefer to remain anonymous or if it’s okay for me to share your name in the cookbook. Anyone who submits a recipe will receive an email with the cookbook when the project is complete. Even If you don’t submit a recipe, I’m happy to email you a copy of the completed product.

Olivia Jacobson, Roslyn Middle School, 7th Grade Our Torah portion, Parshat Chayei Sarah, includes a number of themes, but one stood out for me: an act of kindness that had profound effects on people’s lives. Acts of kindness can be large or small, long-lasting or just a moment in time; they make our lives better. In my opinion, acts of kindness make the world a better place. Everyone benefits from kindness, both the doer and the recipient.

For my mitzvah project, I’ve decided that I would like to perform a very specific act of kindness to change someone’s life. I am planning to not only raise awareness for a very worthy cause but to actually act on it. I will donate my hair to help a child suffering from hair loss become more confident and happy at a difficult time. This hair loss may be the result of cancer treatments or other medical condition including alopecia or burns. This small deed I will perform can have a long-lasting impact on their self-esteem.

Anyone can donate his/her hair if they have enough to donate, but the process requires a little bit of research. Unfortunately, one hair donation does not create one wig, which is why higher volumes of hair donations are needed. In fact, according to one of the most well-known hair donation organizations, Locks of Love, it takes 10 to 12 ponytails to make one wig.

I will be donating my hair to Children with Hair Loss. Many organizations in the United States will accept donations, but I chose Children with Hair Loss because their wigs come with a “care kit” so children can maintain their wigs. Every year until the child is 21, they receive a hair replacement and a new care kit free of charge from the Children with Hair Loss organization.
