President

Daryl Sissman I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who voted by proxy and at the recent Annual Meeting to elect me to the position of President of Temple Shalom. I moved to Naples with my family almost ten years ago and we have been members of Temple Shalom since then. If you told me ten years ago, that I would be the President of Temple AND that I was going to start my presidency during a pandemic, I would have never believed it. But here we are. I am confident that we are going to weather this storm. Our One Family is strong and prepared. We have outstanding clergy and professional staff; talented and strong lay leadership; strong auxiliaries and excellent Adult Education and Religious School programs. That doesn’t mean that we won’t have to tighten our belts and look for ways to adapt to a new economic climate. With this in mind, I have created a task force to take a hard look at the budget and make suggestions, based on different scenarios, since our annual budget was created long before Coronavirus became a household word. Right now, our primary goals are to continue providing excellent spiritual, educational and social programs and services to our Congregation, and to keep our members engaged with Temple and one another. We are forming a task force of health professionals and community leaders to advise leadership as we start to think about reopening our building. While we all want to return to being together in person, the safety and health of our Congregation are our highest priorities. As I look ahead to the future, I plan to focus on Governance. This may not sound exciting, but I am committed to making sure Temple is functioning according to best practices in the non-profit and Jewish communal fields. We are looking at our By-laws and policies, and a Governance committee will be making recommendations to the Board and the Congregation about how best to run Temple effectively. A Strategic Planning Group is already meeting to map out some of the issues and questions that our Board needs to be thinking about in the next few years. Another area that I intend to focus on is Leadership Development. You, the members, are what makes Temple Shalom special. I want every person who is willing to roll up his or her sleeves and get involved at Temple to find their place and their voice. Stay tuned for more information about opportunities, including a mentoring program and “Temple Shalom Academy” that I hope will help identify future leaders of our Congregation. Please let me know if you are interested. We rely on our volunteers and lay leadership to strengthen our One Family. Thank you for the opportunity to serve. Starting my presidency during this time is a “trial by fire” but my years on the Executive Committee and the Board of Trustees have prepared me for the challenges that lie ahead. Please feel free to reach out to me at president@naplestemple.org if you have any suggestions or concerns. I welcome and value your input. Sincerely,

Daryl Sissman

Associate Regional Dir., North Florida Region

Shalom Naples families! BBYO has taken all of its programming online, specifically to our brand-new platform, BBYO OnDemand. Some information about OnDemand from BBYO: Our worldwide network of teens, volunteers, and professionals are uniting to provide the power and impact of BBYO and our partners in new, adaptable, and innovative ways so that wherever Jewish teens and young adults are, we can enjoy everything our movement has to offer, any time we want, online. Over the coming days, this new online space will continue to evolve with exciting opportunities, and we’ll begin to offer programming on a schedule that will feel a lot like a special ‘TV channel’ that you can tune into and enjoy from whatever time zone you’re in as often as you’d like. There will even be global events that we can all share in whether we’re across town or halfway around the world. AZA, BBG, and the global Jewish community have never been stronger, and nothing’s going to stop us now. Each week, Naples BBYO is programming OnDemand and we invite all teens in Naples in grades 8th-12th to join the fun on Wednesday’s at 7pm. For information on how to join programming, we suggest you visit bbyo.org/ ondemand/home and click on Naples BBYO’s Chapter Programming or email jesszimmerman@bbyo.org. Hope to see you online soon! Stay safe, from your friends at Naples BBYO.

CONNECT WITH US

ETIQUETTE REMINDERS Using Zoom for our meetings and webinars has enabled us to stay connected during this unique period. We need your help to ensure our online gatherings run safely and smoothly.

DISPLAY YOUR REAL, FULL NAME Meeting leaders and your fellow participants need to know who is online with us. Make sure you are displaying your real, full name (e.g., Bob Shapiro, NOT Bob or Uncle Bob). Some meetings will use the “Waiting Room” feature in Zoom. If the host doesn’t know who you are, s/he will not admit you to the meeting. You need to update the name in your Zoom profile BEFORE joining your next Temple Shalom meeting or webinar.

MUTE YOURSELF IF YOU AREN’T SPEAKING Background noise, side conversations, and whispering are very distracting in group meetings. Also, any noise you make (e.g., moving a chair, sniffling, etc.) causes your screen to become the main/ speaker screen in a Zoom meeting. Mute yourself when you join a meeting, and unmute only when you are speaking.

TURN OFF VIDEO IF YOU ARE MOVING AROUND Video meetings allow you to do all sorts of things while being online. However, your movements, including background activity, are very distracting to others. If you aren’t in a controlled environment or if you need to move around, please turn your video off. If you need to do something private (e.g., use the restroom), MAKE SURE YOUR VIDEO IS OFF! You don’t want to be the next viral video.

BE CAREFUL WHEN POSTING MESSAGES The chat features allows you to share messages with everyone in a meeting/webinar or private messages with specific individuals. EXERCISE CAUTION BEFORE YOU HIT ENTER! You do not want to send a private message to all participants in a meeting.

Supporting the Front Line Heroes For most of us, the most critical thing we can do now to keep others safe is to stay at home during the COVID-19 outbreak. But others in our community are fighting to support those who are ill, responding to emergencies, and serving our most vulnerable communities.

Let’s show them our thanks. We are collecting messages of support for the front line workers.

Write a thank you note. Make cards with your kids. Write a poem. Draw a picture. Create something to thank the helpers. Then send a picture of your creation or a digital file to info@naplestemple.org and we will send it to healthcare workers and first responders in our community.

We’ve gotten wonderful responses so far. Keep them coming! Need a little inspiration? Check out these great messages!

Ways to Help in Our Community We encourage you to use this list as a guide or perhaps an inspiration. You may have other organizations that you choose to support, or creative ways to provide assistance for the community. Know that every positive deed we do during this time repairs our world and brings us all closer to peace and blessing. Harry Chapin Food Bank (harrychapinfoodbank.org) – Southwest Florida faces unprecedented increased demand from those who are hungry, many for the first time. Harry Chapin Food Bank has locations in Lee and Collier County. There are multiple ways in which Temple Shalom can become involved in their response to the pandemic. 1. Purchase food kits ($30/each) which are being distributed at drive-thru distribution centers. 2. Volunteer to build or distribute food kits at locations in both counties. Masks and gloves will be provided for all volunteers Meals of Hope (www.mealsofhope.org) – Meals of Hope is currently operating multiple food pantry locations. During this time when meal packing events are not possible, there are still several ways that you can assist. 1. The most pressing need right now is for donations of money. Your donation can be stretched a quite far through bulk food purchasing at below wholesale costs. 2. Packing food bags and boxes at the Meals of Hope Center which will be distributed at their food pantry locations Sign up in advance as numbers will be limited for safety protocols https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080d4bafad23a7fa7-meals 3. Distributing food at a food pantry location.

St. Matthews House (www.stmatthewshouse.org) – The recent rise in unemployment increased food insecurity, as well as homelessness. As the only homeless shelter in Collier County, and a meal source for many in need, St. Matthews House needs financial resources to continue their efforts. This organization was co-founded by Rabbi Abraham Schusterman (z”l), the first rabbi at Temple Shalom. Lake Park Diner (www.thelakeparkdiner.com) - Several local restaurants have started to provide food or meals for the medical workers and first responders in our community. Among those offering this service is this acclaimed restaurant on 7th St. North. Every $10 donation sponsors a meal for people in need.

Men’s club steps up

The Temple Shalom Men’s Club wanted to help and thank our local caregivers. They provided one hundred $10 gift cards from Publix and delivered them to NCH North Hospital. Men’s Club member, Len Teitelbaum, made gifts in honor of the Men’s Club to both Harry Chapin Food bank and Meals of Hope

WE ARE STRONG SECURITY CAMPAIGN We Are Strong Security Campaign Join us in creating a safer and more prepared Temple Shalom. Our world turned upside down in October 2018 with the shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh. That event brought into sharp relief the recent rise in hate crimes and anti-Semitic rhetoric across our nation and throughout the world. The subsequent shooting in Poway, California, the recent stabbing in Monsey, NY, and the continued rise of anti-Semitic attacks heighten our awareness of the situation around us. In Torah, we read of an insidious attack made by Amalek on the Israelites – targeting the weakest and most vulnerable members of their community. After the incident, Moses instructs the people that they must remember and never forget what has taken place. Our sages understand this to mean that we have an obligation to learn from past tragedies, and better prepare ourselves for the future. In light of current events, and with this teaching in mind, we have launched a special security campaign to pay for immediate infrastructure upgrades and to fund the ongoing expense of security officers at Temple Shalom. We aim to protect all of us – especially the children who represent our future. How can you help? We are focused on a proactive approach while ensuring that we have the best facilities, training, and protocols possible to keep our community safe and prepared. Providing enhanced security details as well as making structural changes will require significant resources. Please consider donating to our Security Campaign. Your contribution will help us ensure a safe and vibrant community for you, your family, friends and neighbors. Specific security needs have been identified, and you will have the opportunity to give toward those goals. However you choose to support this effort, know that your gift will make a positive impact – increasing the safety and security of all who enter our doors.

The time is now. Please join us by making a pledge today. Help us reach our goal of $200,000. L’Shalom,

Rabbi Adam F. Miller Senior Rabbi
