Audacious Hospitality - Honoring Bobbie and Gene K atz

T

he Jewish model for gemilut hasadim, acts of loving kindness, begins with our ancestors Abraham and Sarah. We read in the book of Genesis that shortly after undergoing the ritual of circumcision (while almost 100 years old!), Abraham notices three travelers in the vicinity of his tent. Leaping to his feet, Abraham literally runs to greet his visitors, invites them into the shelter of his tent, asks Sarah to start baking, and then speeds off to prepare food and beverages which he can serve to his guests. It is audacious hospitality in its highest form, hachnasat orchim in Hebrew, placing the needs of the guest and stranger above his own. And, truth be told, this story presents a nearly impossible ideal to which one should aspire – running to greet guests while recovering from a circumcision!?!? These heroic efforts aside, the sages focus on the merit of Abraham and Sarah’s actions. They note that their hospitality pales next to that of a king or royal ruler. No banquets or entertainment are provided. They lived in a simple dwelling. Yet, Abraham and Sarah are blessed for their generosity with the news that they will have a child in the future. The reason for the blessing is that Abraham and Sarah gave wholly of themselves, withholding nothing from their guests. The travelers are welcomed as family into their home. At Temple Shalom we also embrace this message of audacious hospitality, welcoming our guests at Shabbat services, and more importantly, embracing everyone who enters our spiritual home as part of our family. The sense of warmth and welcome generated at Temple Shalom emanates not from the building itself, but from the people who are here. From our lay leadership through our staff, One Family means engaging each person with generous spirit and opening up our home at Temple Shalom. While that positive energy fills our community, we know that there were two individuals, who like Abraham and Sarah, were ahead of the curve in adopting the principles of audacious hospitality – Bobbie and Gene Katz. Across the generations, we know Bobbie and Gene for their welcoming spirit. They greet us at Shabbat services, Bobbie welcomes every new and prospective member, Gene tirelessly works with the Men’s Club, they serve in leadership, and they open the doors of our “tent” wide for all who wish to enter. This month we recognize our Abraham and Sarah as the honorees at the Temple Gala on The sense of warmth and Saturday, March 9. In addition, as Bobbie and Gene have brought blessings to generated at all who entered Temple Shalom, we will bestow a special blessing upon them welcome as part of our Shabbat service on Friday, March 8. Temple Shalom emanates Join us as we celebrate the hospitality generated by Bobbie and Gene. May not from the building their deeds inspire us all to be partners in making Temple Shalom a home for itself, but from the people all who enter. who are here .

L’shalom, Rabbi Adam F. Miller 3

CANTOR’S MESSAGE

I

t’s never too late to accomplish your goals! Two years ago I started on a journey with three fantastic women – Di Karpman, Gloria Mellman and Sandy Schuman. As a group, these ladies began the process of becoming a Bat Mitzvah, a daughter of the Commandments. Growing up in my congregation in California, there was never a question of my becoming a Bat Mitzvah. It was assumed I would regardless of my gender. However, over the years, I’ve met many adults who for various reasons never became a Bar or Bat Mitzvah at the age of thirteen. In truth, anyone Jewish and over the age of thirteen is technically a Bar or Bat mitzvah. Long ago, this rite of passage from childhood to responsibility for the commandments began to be marked, for boys, by a reading from the Torah or Haftarah and a service, followed by a celebration. In March 1922, Judith Kaplan led the first American Bat Mitzvah service. Even as late as the 1960’s they were fairly unusual, so many adult Jewish women haven’t had that opportunity. And of course, anyone who converted to Judaism as an adult wouldn’t have celebrated a Jewish milestone at that age. However, it’s never too late to experience most ritual aspects of Judaism. Bar/Bat Mitzvah is not a party, nor is it a service. It’s a process of study, learning Hebrew, learning about Judaism, and becoming more knowledgeable and capable as a Jewish adult, culminating in a synagogue service. For adults who go through the process, it can take up to two years of work. It has been such a privilege teaching these three dedicated and lovely women. I am impressed at how much they have grown in their Jewish capabilities and at the relationship that has developed between them. They have embraced this experience whole heartedly and they inspire me to keep on with my studies, to continue to grow as a Jew, because we are never done learning. I hope you’ll join us at 10:00am on Saturday morning, March 2, as we witness Di, Gloria and Sandy lead the congregation in prayer and read from the Torah at this beautiful B’not Mizvah service. All are invited! L’Shalom, Cantor Donna Azu

LEADERSHIP MESSAGES Executive Director

Deborah R. Fidel A fter Pittsburgh:

A Survey of Action, Plans and Attitudes Toward Synagogue Security and Safety ollowing the October 2018 tragedy in Pittsburgh, a cross-denominational survey of plans, preparedness and aspirations was conducted by the Conservative, Reform and Reconstructing Judaism Movements that garnered 367 total responses, including those from 155 respondents from Union of Conservative Judaism (USCJ) - affiliated congregations, 196 respondents from Union of Reform Judaism (URJ) – affiliated congregations, five respondents from Reconstructing Judaism (RJ) - affiliated congregations and 11 independent congregations. When I asked the Executive Director of NATA (the professional organization for Executive Directors who serve Reform Temples) about the results of the survey, I discovered that the data pertaining to Reform temples and the group as a whole had not been analyzed and assembled. So…I volunteered to do it! What I found, was that Temple Shalom is one of the most proactive congregations in terms of resource allocation, security planning, training and overall preparedness. Of course, there is always more that we can do and we are working hard to find the right balance of legitimate security needs and our desire to maintain a warm and welcoming environment. SURVEY HIGHLIGHTS • 59% of Reform respondents, including Temple Shalom, and 57% of all respondents currently have security staff during large events and High Holy Day services. • More than one-third of respondents spend under $5000 annually, and another one-third, including Temple Shalom, spend over $20,000 annually on security. • Some 80% of the congregations, including Temple Shalom, have increased their funding for security over the past year. • More than half of respondents, including Temple Shalom, absorb the cost of security in their operating budget. Revenue sources include operating allocations, mandatory assessments and donations. • Half of respondents with security guards, including Temple Shalom, report that the guards are armed. • Fewer than half of all respondents have security at all times when children are on site (36%) or whenever the building is open (15%). This is an increasing trend and is by far the largest cost factor. • Fewer than 25% of respondents, including Temple Shalom, have reviewed security plans with local law enforcement. • Fewer than 45% of respondents, including Temple Shalom, have annual security training. If you would like to see the complete survey report, please contact me at dfidel@naplestemple.org. I would be glad to share it with you. On another note… What happens when 350 people gather for one holy purpose – to participate in Mitzvah Day? Our Temple becomes a beit tikkun olam, a house/community dedicated to repairing the world, and every participant lives Jewish values, both individually and as a community. Thank you to the volunteers who organized the Mitzvah Day projects and those who volunteered to set up, assist and clean. Thank you to the people who donated hundreds of items and those who gave tzedakah to sponsor the day. Thank you to those who exemplified the Jewish value of pikuach nefesh, by donating blood that will save lives and to those who helped us fulfill the commandments to feed the hungry and clothe the naked. We are grateful for the many hands who created messages of appreciation for First Responders, and concerned themselves with tza’ar ba’alei chayim, the suffering of animals, by baking doggy biscuits for shelter dogs. And a big thank you goes to everyone who made beautiful jewelry and helped us pack school supplies, toiletries and “purple bags” for innocent children, who, in the midst of darkness, experience the love and compassion of people they do not even know. Together, we shared the mission to pursue justice – to repair the world – and fulfilled the mitzvah of tzedakah. For this, and for so much more – thank you!

Eternal Light society.

“Truly loved Temple Shalom and giving generously was one way he expressed that.”

V

ickie Nolen spoke passionately about her husband of 32 years. “Truly was a good, honest, generous man,” she said, adding, “he was always proud to call himself a Jew.” Anyone who knew Truly Nolen knows that when Truly did something, he did it with all his heart. That was certainly true of his Judaism and his support of this Temple during his life, as well as in death, leaving a planned gift to the Temple Shalom Endowment Fund with a provision in his will. Truly had converted to Judaism before moving to Naples, and when he and Vickie arrived here in the early 1990s, he became good friends with the new head honcho at Temple Shalom, Rabbi James Perman. Truly later became a Bar Mitzvah in the Chapel of the Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem. Vickie describes Truly as a dedicated dad, driving their three kids to Sunday School every week. Rabbi Perman who officiated at Sincere’s Bat Mitzvah, Scarlett’s Bat Mitzvah, and Spyder’s Truly Nolen (True’s) Bar Mitzvah describes Truly as “one proud Papa!” “Truly had grit.” That’s Vickie talking about how he lived his life. The youngest of eight children, he was born in Indianapolis in 1928 and his family moved to Miami Beach when his father lost his job in 1937. Truly had a paper route and was a dog walker at the racetrack. He loved to fish and with the money he saved, he bought a small boat. During those years, many of his friends were Jewish and it made an impression on him. At age 16, Truly left home, sailed his boat to Annapolis, Maryland, and got a job. He came home when he was 18, graduated from the University of Florida and went to work for his father who had a pest control business. Ten years later, Truly moved to Tucson, Arizona, and started his own business, which is now one of the largest privately owned pest control companies in the U.S. with franchises around the world. He created his first “mouse car” in 1961. When Truly was 23, he contracted polio. He spent four months in the hospital and was confined to an iron lung for a month. He was told he would never walk again, but not only did he walk, he sailed his own boat, scuba dived and piloted his own airplane. Vickie shared that Truly said, “Polio changed my life for the better.” She believes his experiences in overcoming his own challenges made him the kind and caring man that he was, and instilled in him a strong desire to give back. Officiating at Truly’s funeral, Rabbi Perman spoke from the heart: “There aren’t many people we can say profoundly influenced us as adults. Most of our influences are in childhood. But he did. We all admired him. It’s easy to admire someone who is generous, wise, resourceful, intelligent, funny, and likeable.” Temple Shalom is proud to have been part of Truly Nolen’s life and deeply grateful to Truly and Vickie for their generosity. Truly’s memory is truly a blessing. 6 Members of the Nolan Family

To our knowledge, the Boxcar exhibit is the only traveling one in the world. Built in 1919, the Boxcar is an authentic, Holocaust-era type and was used in Germany until after the war. Today, it travels to schools, libraries, museums, and religious institutions to share a message of learning and hope. Six panels overviewing aspects of the Holocaust are inside the Boxcar at one end, while six others introduce genocide as a topic at the other. Four Museum docents have volunteered to provide their expertise and experience. The docents will be on site for tours, March 3, from 9:00am to 12:00pm. The Holocaust curriculum in our Religious School has been developed in collaboration with the Holocaust Museum and Education Center of SW Florida, a rich gem in our neighborhood. Our sixth grade lead teacher, Chad Atkins, introduced the topic with insight about the Jews in Europe before World War II, followed by a survey of the Anti-Semitic laws passed in Germany leading up to the war. The students then delved deeper, with guest speaker Sam Parish, as he presented The Irene Sendler Project – Life in a Jar. Irene Sendler, a nonJewish social worker, smuggled children out of the Warsaw Ghetto. She made lists of the children’s names and put the lists in jars, burying them, to someday be dug up to find the real identity of the children she saved. The story was told through an artist’s series of paintings of Irene and the Warsaw Ghetto. In closing, the students were told what to expect for their upcoming field trip to the Holocaust Museum. The following Sunday the students and their parents toured the Holocaust Museum. The museum’s exhibits were fascinating and somberly awe-inspiring with a solemn tone for a serious subject. Our students were attentive, articulate, knowledgeable, inquisitive, and well-behaved. The parent support was greatly appreciated! The Holocaust Museum has loaned its Holocaust era boxcar to Temple Shalom for display on our campus. The students (and Temple members) will have an opportunity to tour the boxcar with a knowledgeable docent. Over the following weeks, the students will be preparing to conduct interviews with our local Holocaust survivors. The culminating event for the semester will be the Yom HaShoah Community Observance on April 28, 2019 at 10:00am, in which the students will be active participants. Any sixth grade student in the community who wishes to participate may do so by contacting Susan Feld at sfeld@ naplestemple.org

LEARN WITH US Temple Shal m Preschool

Planting seeds in the minds of our future.

Preschool Director Seyla Cohen

O

ur little ones really had a taste of a cold winter this month; they learned about hibernation, snowflakes and even made snow. We celebrated our 100th day of school arch with parties and posters, and a few of our teachers and kids even aged and came to school as 100-year-old teachers and students! Monday 3/4 TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK! We had an amazing Mitzvah Day on February 10th. Our TSP Thursday 3/7 families were very excited and involved, raising money for Meals No School Friday 3/8 of Hope, donating to the collection of items for Toiletries for Homeless Children, the Purple Bag Project, the Humane Society Spring Break 3/11 - 3/15 and more. They came on Mitzvah Day and helped pack bags of toiletries for the homeless children, supplies for children that Purim Carnival 10am Friday 3/22 are going through chemotherapy and baked dog biscuits for the Lion’s Club Hearing and Sight Humane Society. We are so proud of their involvement and setting 3/25 - 3/28 Testing the ground work for showing their children the act of mitzvot. We continue to feel blessed that The Jewish Federation of Greater pril Naples supports our programs. Through a generous grant, we Chocolate Seder were able to bring the acclaimed Billy Jonas to Temple Shalom Sunday 4/7 Preschool for a free community concert. He was fantastic, and we C amp D ay Friday 4/12 hope to have him back again in the future. On Friday, March 22, TSP will host the 2nd Annual Community No School 4/19 & 4/22 Wide Purim Carnival, another free event sponsored by a generous grant from the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples. The event Passover Seder 9:30am Friday 4/26 will showcase Temple Shalom Preschool and celebrate Purim. We will have music, a bounce house, inflatable obstacle course, a petting zoo, stilt walker, Haman’s Dunk Tank, arts and crafts, a special Purim puppet show, and of course, hamentaschen! The event is from 10:00am - 12:00pm, and everyone will dress up in their favorite Purim costumes! Pre-K and Lions orientations were attended by our rising Cub and Lions parents, as well as new families, and those who were placed on our school waiting list. It is a credit to our amazing teachers, staff and curriculum that we have an overwhelming interest in our outstanding school. Because of this, we are nearing our capacity and only a few spots are left. We are looking forward to another great new school year. It is that time of the year for Teacher Appreciation Week, when we come together to celebrate all the wonderful teachers that may have touched us in some special way. I am thankful for the amazing staff who work in our preschool. Our staff is highly qualified, but more importantly they come every day with endless energy and enthusiasm for the important job that they do. Without question, Temple Shalom has the most outstanding, educated and dedicated staff of any preschool in Collier County. It is through their efforts that we are able to offer so many excellent programs and the TSP Experience to the children. Hooray for our teachers! For a tour or information about TSP you can call the preschool office at 239-455-3227 or email preschool@naplestemple.org

Havurah Happenings

When you join a havurah, you are part of an extended family, enjoying each other’s company at an event planned by a member, sharing in lifecycle events and attending services and events at Temple Shalom. On Sunday, February 10, many of our havurot participated in Mitzvah Day community projects. It was a great experience to be together and help give to our community at large. As a new member it is a great way to meet people with similar interests and integrate into our large Temple Shalom Family. If you think you would like to learn more about being a member of a havurah, feel free to call me at 239-272-8878 or Ana Maria Tamargo at the office at 239-455-3030. Even if you have been a member for some time, joining a havurah can be very meaningful. Also, if your havurah has had a great event and has pictures, please send them to me so we can share. -Debbie Zvibleman

A na M aria Tamargo: Membership Engagement Coordinator Ana Maria Tamargo is our Membership Engagement Coordinator. Her role is to meet and welcome new members and develop strong relationships among new and established members to ensure a smooth integration into the congregation. She works with the volunteers, ensuring the timely and successful development of events to meet member needs and improve the member experience. Ana Maria is mom to a spirited 9-year-old that keeps her on her toes. In her spare time, she teaches 4th grade in our Religious School and when time permits she enjoys baking, crocheting and reading.

With a Simple Clip of a Box Top for Education My thanks to Ida Margolis for coordinating this project to help support schools in Immokalee… and for writing the article below. Purim is the Jewish holiday observed in A dar to celebrate the triumph of the Jews over their oppressors, as told in the book of E sther. The holiday is named after the word “pur,” meaning “lot” or “lottery,” which refers to the lot that the Jews’ enemy H aman threw to determine the day of their destruction.
