CLERGY MESSAGE
Senior Rabbi Rabbi Adam F. MillerMaking the Most of your Moments of Awe
Our family took a road trip this summer, stopping along the way in Chattanooga, Tennessee. There, we visited the remarkable Ruby Falls, an underground waterfall. I shared part of this story at a Friday night service in August, and I am referencing it again as I think it has great value for our start to the new year.
Leo Lambert and his sweetheart Ruby moved to Chattanooga in the early 20th century. An avid spelunker, Lambert heard stories about Lookout Mountain Cave. A cave with sections so large that it served as a field hospital during the Civil War. However, the cave was closed off and its entrance sealed during railroad construction. Lambert believed that it would be valuable to re-open the cave –discovering artifacts from the Civil War or becoming a new tourist attraction. He convinced a series of investors from Europe of his plan. Pouring over maps for years, he determined the optimal place to dig an elevator shaft that would run from the surface all the way down into the cave.
By Lambert’s calculations, they would have to dig more than 400 feet in order to reach the Lookout Mountain Cave. To Lambert’s surprise, they discovered a small crevice at around 260 feet, just big enough for a person to crawl through on their stomach. Lambert noticed that air was moving through the crevice. Curious, he stopped to explore further. After more than 6 hours of crawling on his belly, he reached the first place where it was possible stand. Many more hours later he reached the source of the air flow. An open cavern with a magnificent waterfall cascading down into a pool below. Lambert would later name the waterfall after his beloved Ruby. His team set about to open up the initial passages, so that others could take the elevator, and experience the beauty of Ruby Falls. Today it is a major attraction – the third most visited cavern in the United States with half a million visitors annually.
When I heard this story, I could not help but find the parallels to our own narrative. Lambert’s pausing
to notice the draft strongly echoes the moment of the burning bush. It would have been just as easy for him to pass by the crevice and keep digging, as it would have been for Moses to not pay heed to a bush that appeared to burn, yet was not consumed. Both individuals took the time to reflect, and explore deeper a moment of awe and curiosity.
Here’s the twist in the Ruby Falls story – Lambert’s initial plan turned out to be a failure. They eventually dug down to Lookout Cave, his intended destination. After decades of coal fueled trains passing nearby, it was entirely coated in soot. Completely unusable in any way. Had Lambert not paused to explore the source of the draft in the crevice, his endeavor would have led to complete and total financial ruin.
That moment of awe and wonder changed his life, as did the bush for Moses. That pursuit of wonder sometimes gets lost in today’s world. Overwhelmed by sensory overload, we are prone to miss moments like those because we are simply rolling along from one activity to the next, always tethered to our devices, and rarely observing life around us. It is a sharp reminder of the need to slow down and appreciate the world that is around us. A new mystery or opportunity for growth may lie right in front of us, yet we still need to see it, to notice it, in order to make the most of the moment.
These last few years have taught us to truly value the time that we have in this world. As we start this new year of 5783, let us resolve to pause more often and take note of the little moments of awe that pique our curiosity. May one of those moments lead us to an inspiration as beautiful and awesome as those of the falls and bush.
I pray that you and your loved ones experience blessing, peace, and joy in the year ahead.
L’shanah Tova U’Mtukah!

The Poetry and Music of the High Holy Days
I still remember the first time that I sat in the Sanctuary at Temple Israel in Long Beach, California and heard my Cantor sing the majestic Avinu Malkeinu by Max Janowski for the first time. With the organ and the choir joining him, I felt the emotion well up inside of me as I realized the impact that this incredible music had on me. I had those same feelings the first time I sang Kol Nidre as a Student Cantor.
I still feel the emotion of the music of the High Holy Days each and every time I put on my white robe and stand before our Congregation to intone the majestic and powerful music of the Days of Awe. All of us have our favorite melodies, I know that I do. However, there are many beautiful alternative musical settings that we don’t hear.
I invite you to join me in exploring the poetry and music of two of our most important High Holy Day prayers, Avinu Malkeinu (September 7 at 1:30pm) and Shema Koleinu ( September 14 at 1:30pm). During each of these two sessions, we will look closely into the texts and musical settings these prayers that enrich and deepen our worship during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. I look forward to introducing these new melodies to you!
To RSVP for this class, please email me at dazu@naplestemple.org.

I was recently honored to be chosen as a Fellow at the Institute for Experiential Jewish Education. I have gained a lot, and look forward to sharing my new skills and knowledge with you all! You and your family members may have experienced the magic of Jewish summer camp or traveled to Israel with a group. If you have, you know how transformative those immersive experiences can be in creating community and forming spiritual connections.
This year, I am excited to offer a special opportunity to build and strengthen our members’ relationships with each other, while learning and living in a Jewish setting that we create together.
Many know that I grew up on the beautiful island of St. Thomas. Let me show you around! I will be leading a trip to the Jewish Caribbean aboard the Norwegian Encore during the week of March 12th -19th, 2023 (CCPS Spring Break), for adults and families. Join me and Temple Shalom as we sail around the Eastern Caribbean, where we will explore the Jewish history of the islands, tour beautiful synagogues, and celebrate Shabbat at sea. Did you know that the synagogue on St.Thomas is the oldest in the Western Hemisphere (that has been in continual use as a synagogue), and is famous for its sand floors? We are still taking reservations for this cruise, but space is filling up quickly! If you are interested in joining us, please reach out to me for more information! And yes, it is open to the community. Please bring your friends and extended family for a once-in-a-lifetime trip!
As High Holy Days approach, I wish you and your family a Shana Tova! May it be a year of health, happiness and peace.

LEADERSHIP MESSAGE
President
Leonard Teitelbaum
As we approach that time of year when we get to reset the clock and erase the mistakes that need to be erased, we begin to start to feel somewhat better. Regardless of our background religiously, from Orthodox to liberal to minimal, these High Holy Days create something different. This time of year is tangibly different. Our sense of community has recently been effected and affected. No question. That does not relieve us of the obligation to ask forgiveness from those we have wronged and allow us to start with a clean slate.
I also look for what has been good and hope it will continue or even get better. No matter how difficult this can seem at times, I have been taught to try since I was old enough to understand. In trying to find that spark that brightens an otherwise dark time, as hidden as it might be, I hope I, and you, can find it. It will be easier TOGETHER as ONE FAMILY.
For me, one very specific thing that stands without exaggeration is the privilege of serving on a synagogue Board that has the purest of goals; to be associated with people I respect as well as like adds to that feeling. Without their help and encouragement it would not be possible. Also, WE have, as a group, in this New Year hope to make changes that impact YOU in a most positive way. It will be a combined effort and hopefully succeed because we are a group with diverse opinions, all focused on what we all signed up to do. WE can make it happen. Our challenge is to maintain the excellence achieved by previous leaders of Temple Shalom and build on the foundation that has been laid.
Rabbi Miller, Rabbi Boxman, Cantor Azu, and Deborah Fidel and their incredible support staff are, with the Board, a team that can only be described in superlative terms. It should be a good year with that talent. Let us all begin anew and build on what has been done so far.
It is with that in mind and again as I have been taught, I ask to be forgiven for my mistakes or harm I have done to you, individually and as a collective, and a promise to try to do better in the coming year. As my grandfather (who received his semecha in Lithuania) would say to me with a hand on my head:
L’Shana Tovah Tikatevu v’Teitchateimu or (depending on what neighbor you grew up in)
Shana Tova U’metuka or A gut gebentsht yohr or May you have a good and sweet year!

At Temple Shalom, the act of remembering is done in a very tangible way. We publish a Sefer Zichronot, a Memorial Book, listing the names of our loved ones who have died since last Yom Kippur, and those we remember from years past. A copy of that book is placed in the Holy Ark during the Yizkor service on Yom Kippur. The Memorial Book will be available at the Yizkor service on Yom Kippur and will also be accessible on the Temple Shalom website. If you would like to include the names of your loved ones, please complete the form below. Send completed form to Temple Shalom, 4630 Pine Ridge Road, Naples, FL 34119

The “Other” Voice of Temple Shalom
By Nancy BrownDid you know that Temple Shalom has more than one Voice? Yes, our Temple has many voices, but among the most prominent is that of Carole Greene, who has been speaking to us and for us since the 1980s.
Since her earliest years as a volunteer, Carole has served as our own public relations expert. She has been editor of our newsletters, Recording Secretary of our Board of Directors, author of honoraria on behalf of the Temple, and communicator of congratulations for our members’ special events, birthdays or anniversaries. She has educated the public about Temple Shalom events, holiday celebrations, and explained Jewish practices through writing for The Naples Daily News and other media. One of her more significant challenges has been to serve as the official reporter on progress as we built our wonderful building and additions.
Carole believes an important assignment she has involves interviewing people then writing articles for The Voice when Temple Shalom bestows awards, because “these are to spotlight people who have been instrumental in the growth of our Temple.” And she fondly recalls being honored at a major event to recite

During the High Holy Days this year, we are once again asking congregants to make a donation to the Harry Chapin Food Bank. Why in the world do we do that? Our Jewish tradition is to help our neighbors in need by sharing what we have with the less fortunate. As we contemplate the Yom Kippur fast, many of us donate to help alleviate hunger in our community.
Publix is packed with food and people. “What’s the problem,” you might ask. We’re not as affluent an area as you might think. The problem is big. 23% of Collier County’s entire population received emergency food relief in 2021. 33% of households live in poverty or are working poor, i.e. their income is not enough to meet the basic cost of living in SW Florida. These are the laborers, clerical staff, mechanics, city workers, agricultural workers, health care workers, teachers, hotel and restaurant workers, retail store workers who live paycheck to paycheck (including 15% of Vineyards households and 14% of Pelican Bay households.)
In Lee County, 43% of households are either working poor or at the poverty level.
Most of the food bank’s clients are working families, just trying to make ends meet in a challenging economic environment.
Why donate cash and not a bag of food? The Food Bank is able to leverage donations into more food than we could individually purchase for the same amount. The food bank is able to leverage every dollar they receive into approximately $4 worth of food value. They consistently receive the highest rating from Charity Navigator, directing 96 cents of every dollar donated to programs and services.
How about if I give what I gave last year? Of course, any donation is much appreciated! This year, however, the needs of families are far greater. When you are already living paycheck to paycheck, and then your rent goes up and gas prices go up and food costs more due to inflation, more and more people rely on the Food Bank.
The Food Bank’s expenses are also going up. Their own transportation costs have doubled for pickup and delivery of food. When they buy food, they see the same inflationary rise in prices that we all see. And this is occurring at a time when demand at the food bank is up 20-30%.
I hope you will generously donate to the Food Bank during the High Holy Days. You can donate to the Food Bank through their website (HarryChapinFoodBank.org) and designate Temple Shalom under ‘Gift Notes’. Or mail a check, payable to ‘Harry Chapin Food Bank’ (memo line: Temple Shalom), to 3940 Prospect Ave. #101, Naples, FL 34104.

From the crucible of Egypt, our ancestors emerged as one people. Finding blessing and hope from their shared narrative, they moved forward with holy purpose toward the Promised Land.
Out of the struggles of the pandemic, our Temple Shalom e true kehillah kedosha. Our hearts fill with hope, as the dar tomorrow appears on the horizon.
With the start of 5783, we mark our 60th year, a diamond a with new blessings, as we find in the facets of our One Fam and connection that we seek at Temple Shalom.
May it be a sweet and blessed new year for all.
