Adam F. Miller #LittleAltarsInOurHomes Twice over the course of thousands of years, the Jewish people experienced a shocking and traumatic loss with the destruction of the Great Temple in Jerusalem. Once at the hand of the Babylonians, and a second time by the Romans. At the time, there were no online worship options! In fact, there was only ONE Temple – located in Jerusalem. Which meant that when each of those structures was destroyed, along with it went the opportunity to worship, pray, and connect with God. Historically speaking, two of the greatest miracles bestowed upon the Jewish people were our survival after these cataclysmic events. Denied our one mode of worship, our place of gathering, our spiritual home, we should have dissipated, been assimilated and disappeared. But we didn’t. We persisted over the centuries and millenia that followed. Always believing that we would return, rebuild, and renew our connection with God. While many of us still wish that we could gather for High Holy Days this year, the danger of singing, praying and spreading COVID-19 across our community poses too great of a risk. At the same time, it can be helpful to remind ourselves that compared to the great calamities that befell the generations before, this is small potatoes. We still can stay connected through our virtual experiences. We can pray together and celebrate our holidays, albeit from a safe distance. We can go outside the box and think of creative rituals that will unite us – like gathering for the shofar blowing in our synagogue parking lot and then caravanning to other locations; recording honors to bring members into the services; visiting the sanctuary to be in our holy space; and literally sharing sweetness with drive-thru apples, honey and challah.

When the 2nd Temple fell, the rabbis wondered how they would keep alive their connection to God. They found meaning and purpose around the home becoming a “mikdash m’at” a little altar or worship space. We turn to that same answer today – using our technology to worship from afar in our homes. We know that many are watching and our clergy team loves getting your notes each week letting us know how important these services and worship experiences have become in our time of the pandemic. Some of our members have gone a step further by inviting over family or friends to watch services together while maintaining social distancing. One member shared a plan to put a screen in their backyard and invite over others for the High Holy Days (#holidaysathome). The Mitrani family sent pictures of the little sanctuary they built on their lanai – complete with a TV screen so that Jewish neighbors can join them each Saturday morning for Shabbat services.

I have full faith that the day will come that we can once again worship safely together in person – without fear for our health or that of our neighbors. Until then, I hope that you will continue to embrace the power of community that we continue to experience together. We are truly, One Family with Many Connections. Each linked to our Temple through the shared traditions of our people. May this new year bring us blessings of hope, joy and sweetness for a better year ahead.

With the current health pandemic, and restrictions on group gatherings, our kitchens have become our classrooms, and our dining rooms has become our offices. Where then, is our synagogue? Following the destruction of the Temple, the rabbis asked this same question. Without a localized place of worship, how could we pray together? We are the inheritors of their answer: Our home would become our “Makom Kadosh” a holy place. Our current challenge is to create a sacred space at home while we are in front of our computers or livestreaming Temple Shalom’s services.

Celebrating the High Holidays virtually, we will certainly miss being in person together, standing close to one another and singing in harmony. But, we will be “together” safely in our homes. This year, we have a unique opportunity to create a sacred space in our home— a Makom Kadosh. The suggestions below are meant to help you enhance the High Holidays experience at home, while creating a communal atmosphere for us all.

1. Choose your prayer space carefully in advance by spending a few moments of individual contemplation/family discussion. Don’t wait for the last minute!

2. What chair will you sit on? Put a cushion or festive pillow on it, or drape it with a tallit, special piece of fabric, or scarf.

3. Change where you put your computer from a workspace to a contemplative space by covering the desk or table with a white tablecloth, white runner, or white placemat, and a vase of flowers.

4. Find meaningful objects to grace your space. On Rosh Hashanah include holiday objects like candlesticks and

kiddish cup, apples and honey. On Yom Kippur you can place cherished mementoes, family heirlooms, and photos of loved ones to surround you. If you own a shofar, put it where it’s visible.

5. If possible, move the computer space back so that you are “watching” the screen more than “manipulating” it.

Consider connecting your computer to a TV screen so it feels less like a work device.

6. Try to limit or disconnect auditory distractions. You can turn off your email and text message ping sounds, and/or close your email program and other apps so you can be fully present during the service.

7. Wear clothing that makes you feel as if you are entering a spiritual space. Kippah and tallit are welcome if they help you express a connection to this special worship.

8. Be sure you have your machzor with you, just like on past High Holidays when we gathered. As you feel its cover and edges and flip its pages, remember the times you’ve used it before—who you sat near, what moved you in the service, the first time you used it, etc. Having a machzor means you can participate more fully. Our machzors will be available for pick at our Apples, Honey and Challah drive-thru on Sunday, September 13 between 10:00am and 12:00pm.

Director of Lifelong Learing Rabbi Ariel Boxman After many months of being closed during this pandemic, our preschool doors finally opened on August 17. Children once again entered the building with big smiles and wide eyes. Laughter could be heard in the hallways and teachers, parents and students beamed with excitement. Now, while our curriculum, the unique enrichments we offer, and the warm feeling are all still present, because of Covid-19, there are some new additions and adjustments to our program. In order to keep our students, staff and families as healthy as possible, our Covid-19 protocol include: • Curbside drop-off & pick-up: In order to limit the amount of adults in the building, students are being dropped off at the curb and escorted into their classroom by teachers.

• Temperature checks/health questionnaire: Prior to dropping off at school, a staff member checks all students for fever and parents are required to answer questions about the status of their child’s health.

• Pods: In order to limit the potential spread of Covid-19, during the school day students only interact with their two teachers and students in their assigned classroom.

• PPE: All adults are required to wear masks while inside the building. Students are not required to wear masks, but many have chosen to do so. Teachers are also required to wear smocks over their clothes in order to limit the spread of germs when they are in close contact with students.

• Increased use of outdoor spaces: In addition to students utilizing our wonderful playground and Trike Track, we have built an outdoor classroom with brand new picnic benches and umbrellas. Teachers are able to utilize the classroom and other outdoor spaces multiple times per day.

• Virtual enrichments: Because we are limiting the daily interaction to two teachers and their assigned student group, we have added virtual enrichments to the day instead of physically bringing additional teachers in to the classroom. Enrich- ment teachers have been asked to record their lessons and upload them to YouTube. Smart TV’s have been installed in all enrichment classrooms, and teachers are able to simply play the lesson for the day for their students. It has been wonderful for students to still see the faces and hear the voices of the teachers they miss seeing in person.

• Increased sanitation: We have added additional sanitation practices to our daily routine including a hospital grade fogging system to keep the classrooms extra clean and sanitary.

While these updates and changes have taken us some time to adapt to, we are all grateful for the opportunity to open our doors and resume the program we know and love. Many families have chosen to enroll their children this year and we even have a waitlist for future enrollment. I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to serve as the director this year and work with such a talented and dedicated team.

Abe and Harriet are flying to Israel for Sukkot. Suddenly, the El Al Captain announces, “Ladies and Gentlemen, I am afraid I have some very bad news. Our engines have ceased functioning and we will attempt an emergency landing. Luckily, there is a remote and uninhabited island below, and we should be able to land safely on the beach. However, we may never be rescued.”

Thanks to the skill of the flight crew, the plane made a flawless landing with little damage and no injuries.

As they climbed ashore, Abe turns to Harriet and asked, “Did you pay our L’Shalom pledge to Temple Shalom before we left?”

“No, sweetheart,” she responds. Still a little shaken from the emergency landing, Abe then asks, “Harriet, did we pay our Above and Beyond pledge?” “Oy, forgive me, Abe,” Harriet pleaded. “I didn’t send that one either.”

However, we too, are feeling the effects of the economic downturn in unforeseen ways and we have had to make some difficult decisions based on our new financial reality.

Abe suddenly grabs her and gives her a passionate kiss. Harriet pulls back, startled, and asks, “What was that for?” Abe says, “THEY WILL FIND US!” We feel very fortunate that we don’t actually have to chase down our members for pledges and gifts. You give to Temple Shalom because this is your home away from home, and you feel invested in what happens here. Our partnership is about more than being together physically; we are building a Jewish future for ourselves, and those that follow us.

The last seven months have presented many new challenges for our clergy, staff, and for me as the Executive Director.

However, like earlier generations of Jews confronted with new circumstances, we have successfully adapted the traditions and rituals of our ancient faith to face the challenges presented by Covid-19. As we approach the High Holy Days this year, we can assure you that the experience will be different, but no less meaningful and memorable. We look forward to being with you when we open our digital doors on the most sacred of days on the Jewish calendar.

We hope that with this new year, you will recommit to ensuring that our Temple Shalom community continues to thrive in the year ahead, until the day that we can be together again in our Sanctuary. If you have already sent 6

We know that Temples across the country are feeling the weight of the pandemic. Many synagogues and Jewish organizations are facing declining membership and reduced financial support. We are fortunate. Temple Shalom is strong and will continue to thrive as we navigate this crisis.

Some of our members have lost jobs; others are supporting newly unemployed children and grandchildren. I have taken more calls this year from people asking to reduce their L’Shalom pledge until they and their families get back on their feet. On the other hand, some of you have actually increased your gifts this year because you support our commitment to welcoming in every Jew who seeks us out, regardless of their ability to pay.

Thanks to those of you who have opened your hearts, we are cautiously optimistic that we will reach our fundraising goals this year. However, make no mistake - it will take continued financial support from all of us who can afford to be generous, to ensure our Jewish future here.

This year, the High Holy Days may be virtual, but our community is not. Being a part of Temple Shalom means that we are connected to each other; we share the experience of being Jewish. Your continued membership and financial commitment means that when life returns to normal, Temple Shalom will be there, enriching our lives now and for many years to come.

Your membership and generous support are needed more than ever - we really do need each member of our One Family this year - to sustain our Temple today and to be there for you and our community tomorrow.

Isaiah 58:10 L’Shana Tova, Please help us combat hunger by participating in Temple Shalom’s annual High Holy Day Food Drive, benefitting Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida.

In order to maximize the benefit of your gift to the Food Bank, we are asking for financial contributions, as we have for the past seventeen years, rather than a donation of food.

Your generosity supports the Food Bank’s mission of leading our community in the fight to end hunger. Last year, your contributions helped the Food Bank distribute 31.5 million pounds of food, including 8.9 million pounds of food to hungry children, working families, seniors, and veterans in Collier County. Approximately 151,610 Southwest Floridians lack consistent access to nutritious food, including 46,470 children. Most of the Food Bank’s clients are working-poor families who do not earn enough to feed their children.

A contribution of Chai ($18.00) enables the Harry Chapin Food Bank to acquire and distribute $144.00 worth of food to our neighbors in need through the Food Bank’s mobile pantry program and network of 150-plus partner agencies. A triple Chai ($54.00) contribution will provide $432.00 in food value.

Members of Temple Shalom reached another milestone by raising almost $39,072.00 for Harry Chapin Food Bank during the High Holy Days last year. Because of your generosity, the congregation has raised more than $244,072.00 for the Food Bank since 2002, when Temple Shalom first began collections between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

Daniel Rosenfeld was born and raised in South Brunswick, New Jersey. He moved to Florida in 2004 to finish college at Lynn University in Boca Raton where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communications.

After moving to Naples, Daniel performed many different odd jobs until his true calling and passion in the nonprofit community came to him in a whirlwind. Daniel now works for a nonprofit organization that helps families and individuals with epilepsy through fundraiser events and support group meetings. Daniel lives with epilepsy himself. Daniel is an avid Rotarian with The Rotary Club of Naples, loves to play golf, loves to cook, and spend time with family.

Mia and Joel Hyatt have three children, Ezra (4), Harrison (2) and Hannah (2). Mia grew up in MN and went to the University of Florida. Joel grew up in Philadelphia and attended Penn State University for undergrad and the University of Florida for law school.

Joel currently works as an attorney for Hahn, Loeser, and Parks. Mia works as a portfolio manager for FineMark National Bank & Trust. Since moving to Naples in 2005, both Mia and Joel have taken an active role in the community and hope to become active members of the congregation. Joel is a board member for Literacy Council Gulf Coast, co-chair of the Lee County bar association Health and Wellness Committee, and a member of the 20th Judicial Circuit Pro Bono Committee. Mia is a volunteer for Guardian ad Litem, a board member for the Salvation Army, and serves on the Salvation Army’s Women’s Auxiliary. Mia is also a board member for the CFA Society of Naples. As a family, their weekends are spent mostly at the pool and beach with their close-knit group of friends.

Bereavement Group for Members of the Temple Shalom Community In the spirit of our tradition, which calls us to perform the mitzvah of Nihum Avelim (comforting mourners), Temple Shalom will be offering a Bereavement Support Group for people who are grieving for a loved one. The group, which will observe confidentiality of communication, will meet on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month from 9:30am to 11:00am.

Group size is limited to twelve people. The facilitators, Arline Kaplan, Ph.D., and Leslie Wasserman, M.A., are members of Temple Shalom. Both Arline and Leslie, licensed in New York and Michigan respectively, have extensive experience with groups and with people experiencing grief and loss. “We are hopeful that sharing our stories with empathic, compassionate others will allow some healing, solace and peace into our lives. We can each be the gift that can possibly help to heal the wound.”

CONNECT WITH US SHALOM CARES PROJECT From the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, many of our Temple Shalom members have been engaged in a volunteer project. They have been reaching out to other members who are alone or whose health is compromised in some way, often complete strangers.

At the time of Hurricane Irma, we became aware of the need to stay in touch with some of our members and to be alert regarding their needs. Since then, a list of members has been developed (our Care List) in case another emergency arose.

Our current pandemic and its implications for older members is just such an emergency. Beginning in March 2020, with a Care List of 25 people, members volunteered to make weekly calls (sometimes more often) to the people on that list. At the time of this writing in early August, we have 19 callers contacting 22 people. (Some are calling more than one person and some of our callers and our callees have gone north for the summer.) We also have 11 volunteers waiting to be assigned someone to call.

It quickly became clear that some people, those who should not go out to shop, would need help getting their groceries.

Another group of volunteers offered to go grocery shopping for those members and to deliver the groceries to their front door. Currently, we have nine people shopping weekly for 13 other members. We have 19 more volunteers waiting to be assigned to someone to shop for!

Another aspect of the Shalom Cares project is based in the importance of staying connected to all members of the congregation in this time of isolation. In April of this year and again in June, Ana Maria Tamargo, our Membership Engagement Coordinator, organized another group of 48 callers to reach out to our members. She prepared and assigned lists of about 30 members to each caller, who then connected with those Temple members. Ana Maria also called about 13 of the lists herself. Occasionally, these calls yielded information about some members with special needs.

In the process of making all of these calls and connections,

we learned about another need that some of our members were experiencing – a need for assistance with the use of technology which would make it possible for them to participate in the virtual activities that were being provided by our Temple staff. A small group of volunteers (three very knowledgeable people) are currently working with five of our Temple members to enable them to take part in the Shabbat services (streaming video) and many stimulating activities (Zoom) – classes, interviews, entertainment, etc. It is our hope that by helping members with their technology, we are making the isolation required by the Covid-19 pandemic a little more tolerable.

Ana Maria, Bobbie Katz and I , have made a wonderful team! This project will continue making connections with our members as long as it is needed.

It has been such a pleasure to be involved with this project.

Our members are amazing, very willing to step up when help is needed. Even though many of these members volunteered back in March, and then waited a long time to be assigned, no one has turned down an assignment when they were called. Frequently, when the volunteers call in a report, they say thank you to us! They appreciate the opportunity to do something that is making a difference – a mitzvah. And they appreciate having the opportunity to make new connections and new friends.

Now it is my turn to say thank you for the opportunity to lead this process and thank you to all of the volunteers who have demonstrated the value of connecting with Temple Shalom and fellow members. It is a labor of love.

Of course, I love working Bobbie – we have collaborated at every step and divided tasks when we could. For me, this has been a great example of how a congregation that is engaged in a Relational Judaism experience stays connected with members even when we are isolated from one another. We truly are ONE FAMILY!!

B’nai Mitzvah Sheli Bershadski 9-5-2020 Sheli Yisraela Bershadski was born in Naples, Florida. She is the daughter of Rudy and Rocio Bershadski and a sister to Ezra and Noa. Sheli loves playing competitive soccer. She also enjoys running track and cross country. Some of her other favorite hobbies and activities include going to the beach with her family, skateboarding, one wheeling, and riding her bike. She enjoys playing with her cat Nébo. Watching instructional violin videos for extra violin practice allows her to dream of becoming an amazing violinist like Lindsey Sterling. To Sheli, becoming a Bat Mitzvah means fulfilling all the responsibilities of being a Jew, such as being kind, helping others, making sacrifices and brightening up this world with her actions.

Sidney K amerman 9-26-2020 Sidney is an 8th grade student at North Naples Middle School.

She is the daughter of Max and Meredith and big sister to her two rescue dogs, Bernie and Vinnie.

Sid is an outdoor enthusiast.

She loves to go hiking, boating and fishing. Her mitzvah project includes volunteer work with the Freedom Waters Foundation where she was able to share her love and knowledge of the water with a child who has special needs. Sid is also a devoted camper at Camp Coleman where she has spent the last five summers. Sidney looks forward to becoming a Bat Mitzvah on September 26.

Men’s Club President Ron Yasbin

On behalf of the Board of the Men’s Club I want to wish all of you and your families L’Shana Tova Tikateyvu. Clearly, we really need to be sealed in the Book of Life for a good year.

During this past month, we made commitments to support the work of the Sustainability Committee of Temple Shalom and to the school to help with the purchase of equipment to enhance the wellness environment. We have also continued to reach out to our members, as well as to those in the Congregation who had not yet joined the Men’s Club. These outreach efforts are definitely yielding positive results.

We want to hear from all of our members about their ideas on how the Men’s Club can grow and better serve the Congregation, the school and the greater community. Please take this opportunity to email me at ryasbin@alumni.psu.edu with your ideas and suggestions.

Events and programs that are tentatively planned include (dependent upon safety concerns) our participation in Mitzvah Day, the Purim Carnival, joint luncheon with the Sisterhood, an evening talk sponsored by the Sustainability Committee, Sunday Brunches, dinner and a show at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre (musical will be “On Your Feet”), Members’ Deli Night, Football Night, career mentoring for high school students, as well as our repeating activities (going to the Alamo Range, golf outings, etc.). We would also like to organize grandfather/father/guardian - children events It goes without saying that all of these events will depend heavily on safety concerns with respect to Covid-19 as well as our obtaining volunteers and leaders. Now is a great time to give some thought to activities and services you would like to see happen. Stay safe and keep healthy.

SISTERHOOD We have Not Forgotten You Staying home these many months is getting to be not somuch fun anymore. So, Sisterhood has come up with a plan to keep everyone engaged. We have not forgotten about any of you.

We are planning programs without high calorie luncheons for now. I expect we all will be nice and slim since we are not eating lunch out and are walking more. You can sit in your house and eat lunch while listening to the program which we hope will be of interest to everyone.

Everything will be on Zoom, with some protocols.

1. You must RSVP. To make sure our meetings are secure, no “walk-ins” will be allowed.

2. If you are not sure whether you are a paid-up member of Sisterhood, contact Lynn Prosten by email at abbymont20@ aol.com. As Membership Vice President, she will be happy to assist you.

TIKKUN OLAM

Tikkun Olam Council Chair Ken Goldstein 5781 An Opportunity to Help Repair the World; Water Quality Forum on November 4 Who could have predicted the upside down world we are facing during this pandemic...social distancing, masks, no travel, and a lot of eating at home. We watched a lot of TV and read a lot of books. Even so, we were better off than most.

A special thanks to our outstanding clergy and staff who kept us informed, involved, and comforted! They really made a difference.

As we prepare for the High Holy Days, we should remember our sacred obligation to tikkun olam…literally, repair the world. One good example is a Vote-by-Mail Task Force led by Liz Jaffe, which urges every member of our Congregation to be registered to vote, and to obtain a vote-by-mail ballot for the recent primary and the November 3 General Election.

Another example, our Sustainability Task Force, which is working to reduce our environmental footprint within our Temple. We also recognize that there are important sustainability opportunities that impact our facility, and our members, beyond our four walls. One critical issue is water quality here in Southwest Florida.

To learn more, we are holding a Water Quality Forum via Zoom, on Wednesday November 4, to focus on the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) passed by the U.S. Congress in 2000. The CERP (when fully funded) will restore historic water flow from Lake Okeechobee (Lake O) south into the Everglades which has been blocked for 90 years by both diversionary canals and Alligator Alley. You may remember that Lake O discharges into the Caloosahatchee River were largely responsible for the 2018 blue-green algae and red tide disasters in Southwest Florida. During the forum we’ll explore the Plan, the causes of blue-green algae and red tide blooms, and what we as individuals can do to prevent a recurrence.

TIKKUN OLAM THREE “MOVIES THAT MATTER” TO BE SCREENED IN OCTOBER

By Carole J. Greene Temple Shalom is pleased to help sponsor this year’s “Movies That Matter” series. It is brought to the community by the Human Rights Coalition, which includes The Holocaust Museum & Education Center/GenShoah SWFL, Jewish Federation of Greater Naples/Jewish Community Relations Council, Temple Shalom, and Naples United Church of Christ. Because of the COVID-19 restrictions, the screenings on the last three Wednesdays of the month will be virtual. On October 14, “Sustainable Nation” looks at the dire water shortages in parts of the world and ways to solve them. Israeli experts have developed a solar-powered system to pump water from an aquifer and distribute it to parched villages, a technology they now share with the world. The film visits arid places in Africa, India, and California’s Central Valley—where 30% of US crops are produced—and, of course, Israel.

“Bedlam” will be screened on October 21. This movie explores the treatment—or lack of it—for mentally ill people in the US. Over a period of months or years, it follows Johanna, who is bipolar; Merle, who suffers from schizophrenia; Monte, who can’t get off the street-prison-hospital-street merry-go-round; and Todd, who went from homeless to a home in four years but loses his apartment after spending three months in jail.

The final film, “Telling Amy’s Story,” will be featured on October 28. It shows how law enforcement and the judicial system failed Amy, and how detectives discovered the all-too-easy-to-follow trail of abuse only after her husband murdered her.

Mariska Hargitay, star of TV’s “Law & Order—SVU,” introduces the documentary and returns at the end for a discussion with the leader of the National Domestic Violence Hotline. Filmmaker Joe Myers will join local experts for discussion after the screening.
