Honoring One’s Parents Brings Blessing to the World

to honor one’s parents in the age of the “sandwich generation.” The evening will then finish with the brief rituals of Selichot that include the magnificent sounding of the shofar.

Let us set the goal this year of making one improvement in the world, that by the end of the year we can look back and know that things are a little better because of what we have accomplished. May 5777 bring you and all of your loved one’s sweetness, joy, laughter and blessing.

Friends, it has been a long summer.

The Olympics last month brought joy and distraction after months of heartache and frustration. We felt powerless as we witnessed: the vitriol of the political campaigns; tragic events in Orlando, Dallas Shanah Tova U’Mtukah, and abroad; torrential rain and deadly flooding in Louisiana, and increasing racial Rabbi Adam F. Miller tensions across the country. So much appears beyond our ability to change or impact that we lose our sense of balance and equilibrium.

At the end of this month we will start a new year, 5777, and with that milestone we are given the opportunity to pause, reflect and regroup. With space to breathe we find our balance and acknowledge that indeed, the world is not perfect.

As a result we have a lot of work to do in our mission to make the world around us more whole and holy.

Making cue sheets, preparing the choir’s music, meeting with student Torah chanters, choosing the honors…… it’s the begining of August and I’ve already started the process of preparing myself for the High Holy days. By the time Selichot arrives and I put on my on white robe, I’m ready - not only logistically, but spiritually and mentally.

As summer winds down and the back-to-school season approaches, so, too, do the High Holy Days. For some, the High Holy Days represent a time to gather with family and friends, eat apples and honey and wish each other a Happy New Year. For others, the High Holy Days, and the 30 days surrounding them can be a profound endeavor in soul searching, making things right with yourself and others.

Jewish tradition provides us with several reminders of the upcoming Days of Awe, as well as a number of ways we can prepare for them.

Elul, the month that precedes Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) is considered a time when God is particularly accessible to the Jewish people. During Elul, the shofar is sounded daily during the morning service. This tradition not only reminds us that the shofar will be blown on Rosh Hashanah, it is also a wakeup call of sorts, reminding us of the High Holy Days and urging us to begin our preparations. Also during Elul, which this year begins on September 4, Psalm 27 is added to the morning and evening liturgy and continues through Sukkot.

Begin with the words, “One thing I ask of Adonai only that do I seek.” Imagine if you could ask one thing of Adonai; imagine if reality, life, all the powers and resources in existence could grant you one thing, and one thing only. Open your mind to the endless possibilities that could be incorporated into this singular ask. Would you ask for something? Health?

Wealth? Power? Intelligence? Courage? Patience? Honor?

Psalm 27 reminds us that it’s time to wake up and examine what’s important to us. It is a time of asking and seeking, a time to get clear – what do I really want? What am I honestly looking for? The High Holy Days are a personal time – it is about each person – the universal human condition. What am I asking for? The Psalmist answered like this – “to live in the house of Adonai all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of Adonai, and to frequent God’s temple.” What do you seek? What are you asking for? The challenging spiritual work of Elul is made easier when we feel that God is with us as we strive to bring out the best in ourselves.

My name is Ashley Singer. I am 12 years old and currently in 7th grade at Oakridge Middle School. I play the French horn in the concert band and the piano in the jazz band. I also love to play basketball. My favorite Jewish holiday is Hanukkah because I get presents and eat latkes. One of my mitzvot was learning to play a Jewish song on the piano. I also felt good about giving away my old clothes and toys to needy children.

As we approach the High Holidays, we have several options for prospective members to join us. Do you know someone who is moving here or has lived here, but are unaffiliated? Invite them to our Shabbat on the Beach service on September 2nd or have them come to our open house for prospective members on September 23rd to find out all that we have to offer. Bring them to any service and introduce them to our board members and Membership Committee greeters. In addition, if you see someone who is a new member go up to them and introduce yourself. We have had several new members join in the last month and we want to make sure that they feel welcome.

As a result of board actions, you will see that new landscaping has been installed in front of the entrance to the temple. The hearing loop has also been installed, along with new carpeting in the sanctuary.

At the end of this month you will notice the Harry Chapin food bank basket in the lobby. A contribution of $18 permits the food bank to buy nearly $108 worth of food. Last year we raised $10,000 because of your generous donations. Envelopes will be passed out at Rosh Hashanah for you to bring back on Yom Kippur. The food bank is in dire need this year and I hope that you will once again assist those in need in our county.

I hope to see everyone during our High Holiday services. I will be greeting before services, so please stop by and see me so that I may wish you L’shana tovah.

Help those affected by the devastating flooding in Baton Rouge Temple Shalom is arranging to provide a Shabbat meal for members of Congregation B’nai Israel in Baton Rouge to help give them a sense of community and wholeness during such a difficult time. We appreciate any gifts you can make towards this effort. Checks can be sent to Temple Shalom with “Flood Relief ” in the memo line. Donations can also be made by credit card on ChaverWeb or by calling the Temple office. All funds will go towards helping those in Louisiana. Any funds remaing after the cost of the meal will be used to purchase gift cards that will be given out to families in need.

Endowment Corner “Because we believe in leading by doing…”

As Howard Solot spoke those words, Janet Solot reached out and pointed to the title of the brochure sitting on the table, “For Now & Forever.” They were both answering the same question: “Why did you step up and make the first six-figure contribution to Temple Shalom’s Endowment & Planned Giving Fund?”

“We believe in the future…” said Janet.

“And we want Temple Shalom to be part of that future here in Naples,” Howard elaborated, adding, “We jumped in to encourage others to do the same!”

Rabbi Miller is excited to see the energy and momentum behind the endowment effort. Citing Theodore Herzl’s words, If you will it, it is no dream, Rabbi explained, “Like the handful of Jews who founded our congregation with barely a minyan, and all those who followed taking us from strength to strength, it’s now our turn to take Temple Shalom to the next level for those who will come after us.”

The goal of the Endowment and Planned Giving Program is to provide long-range stability for our Temple with principal that remains untouched while generating income to assist in meeting current needs and opportunities. Endowment funds will enable us to thoughtfully and strategically manage our current and future needs.

The Solots are also strong believers in the Planned Giving aspect of the program. In Howard’s words, “Planned Giving provides a great opportunity for many in our congregation to make a truly big difference—and by stating your intentions, you help the Temple plan intelligently.” When you make Temple Shalom your beneficiary, planned gifts can help you match your personal financial goals with your desire to ensure the future of our Temple.

This year is the official Endowment kick-off, and we thank Janet and Howard from the bottom of our hearts. We also echo the Solot’s sentiments when they say, “It’s our hope that everyone will give as generously as they are able to.”

Contributions to Temple Shalom funds are a great way to commemorate happy occasions, memorialize loved ones and show friends and family that they are appreciated.

This summer I had the privilege of spending two weeks in Israel. As a participant in the Educator’s Seminar at Yad Vashem (the Holocaust Museum), I had an intensive 76 hour experience. The goal of the seminar was to promote best practices in Holocaust education, develop the foundation for each school’s curricular goals as related to the Holocaust, and ensure that the best and most recent information, resources and materials were available to each of us. It was an experience like no other – intense, emotional, educational, fulfilling, and even exciting at times. We met with survivors and heard their incredible memories. We learned with some of the preeminent scholars in Holocaust studies, exploring the most recent research and revelations. At the end of the seminar, each of us worked on our own curriculum pieces to create a guide for what we wish to accomplish and our teaching perspective for our respective locations.

in diaries and memoirs uncovered in the years since the Holocaust.

Holocaust Education in Temple Shalom Religious School occurs primarily in the 6th grade year.

As such, students will focus on several key facets of the Holocaust: • Stereotypes and anti-Semitic attitudes that created an atmosphere for Nazi success • Life before the war • Ghettos • Deportation • Concentration and Extermination Camps • Righteous Gentiles • Liberation • Life after the war and survival

While these are just small pieces of the work, they represent a significant impact on how the Holocaust is taught – for children and for adults. The Religious School Holocaust education is summarized above.

For adults, our Melton Holocaust Through Diaries and Memoirs course begins February 1st – and is created on the same pedagogical philosophy and practices. I invite you to join us for a different type of Holocaust education.

Each year, when Temple Shalom Preschool opens its doors to begin a new school year, the hallways fill with happy smiles, enthusiastic spirits, and eager children. This year was no exception. Now, after several weeks, both families and students have settled into a comfortable routine, and are feeling secure and filled with confidence as our preschoolers build the foundation for future education. Here at Temple Shalom Preschool our staff is so excited to start another year of growth, dedication, and challenges. We watch the faces of both old and new students as they enter the building with looks of wonder and eagerness. Their growth, both physically and emotionally, never ceases to amaze us.

Once again, our much loved Miss Jane is teaching the school’s unique Mommy, Me, and More classes. New mothers are provided with a support group and are given the opportunity to meet other mothers and make new friends. Friendships can make an enormous difference in the journey through motherhood often alleviating the feeling of loneliness and helping new mothers bond and share experiences. At the same time, children 0-24 months are provided with a strong foundation for learning through interactive play, music, art, and exercise. Little ones begin to develop important skills such as socialization, self-control, and physical and cognitive development, so important for the preparation for their school experience. Tikkun Olam Council - Social Action & Social Justice at Temple Shalom Together…We Can Repair the World

Have you heard about the Health Care Forum?

On Wednesday, September 7th, we will have our first forum sponsored by the Tikkun Olam Council. It will focus on access to health care, with a great panel of experts including Dr. Allen Weiss, President and CEO of NCH Health Care System, William Ertag, M.D. and a representative of the Neighborhood Health Clinic. Dr. Jaclynn Faffer, President and CEO of JFCS of Southwest Florida, who will moderate the discussion.

Rabbi Miller will briefly present the Jewish values regarding health care.

The panelists will then discuss whether we are meeting those values and if not, what needs to be done to create access to health care for everyone. This critical issue affects many people in our community.

We hope that this will be the first of a series of forums dealing with important issues affecting us all.

The Council continues to encourage volunteers who are willing to make a difference. There are many ways to get involved. Volunteers are needed at the Harry Chapin Food Bank here in Naples. Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Our Hearing Loop is Here!!

Just in time for the High Holy Days, our loop system has been installed under the new carpet in the sanctuary. The loop amplifies sound for those with hearing aids that have a telecoil (hearing aids with a t-switch for use with telephones). The first Shabbat the loop was operational, Dan Spintman, a hearing aid user, said “The sound quality is excellent!”

On Sunday, September 18, at 10:00 AM there will be an orientation program in the sanctuary for anyone wanting to learn more about the system. A local ASHA and Board Certified Audiologist, Darlene Ballew, Au.D., will be available

to answer questions. Dan Spintman will also be there to talk about his experience with the loop.

There is still a need to raise money.

Through the generosity of our congregants, Bernie and Bobbie Lublin, Stu Warshauer, Sisterhood, and Men’s Club, we are well on our way, having raised the first $3,000. We need to raise another $3,000 to cover the cost of this worthwhile addition to our sanctuary.

Our Temple Board thoughtfully agreed to make it possible to install the system prior to the completion of the fundraising.

High Holy Days Ticket Policy Who receives complimentary tickets by mail?

Temple Shalom members in good standing.* Who else can receive complimentary tickets?

If you have never attended High Holy Day services with us, we will be happy to welcome you as our guest, with complimentary tickets. Others who may receive compimentary tickets are: Immediate family of Temple members (Parents, grandparents, siblings, children who are visiting from out of town), Military personnel and college students (with ID),Visitors who are members of other Reform congregations (Advanced arrangements having been made between their URJ member congregation and Temple Shalom) I am a Temple Shalom member and I’m not going to use my ticket, can I give it to someone else?

No. Tickets are personalized and are non-transferable.

This is to be fair to our committed membership and also for security reasons. We must be aware of each and every person in the Temple during the High Holy Days.

Can tickets be purchased for Holy Day services?

Yes, however, seating is limited, so advanced planning is recommended.

What is the cost of a High Holy Day service ticket? $100. Per person for all the High Holy Day services.

Can I apply the ticket price as a credit towards membership?

Yes, we encourage you to do just that! It gives you an opportunity to worship with us before you decide if Temple Shalom is right for you. This credit will be applied to membership provided you join the Temple

by November 30, 2016.

If I can’t afford, or I know of someone who can’t afford the ticket price, can I/we still come to services?

Yes. Contact us in advance and give us the opportunity to help you. In all cases of special need, we welcome you and will ask you to pay only what you can afford for a ticket and/or for membership. It will be our pleasure to have you worship with us. *Additional Information…

Definition of GOOD STANDING: “Good standing” means that there are no outstanding financial obligations to the Temple. Also, 25% of the 2016-2017 dues needs to be paid by August 26, and any prior year dues balance needs to be brought current.

This policy applies unless other arrangements have been made with our Executive Director.

URJ RECIPROCITY FORM: If you are a member of Temple Shalom and plan to worship elsewhere, please call the Temple office and we will help you with reciprocal seating arrangements.

Visitors who are members of other Reform congregations who will be in Naples for the High Holy Days are welcome to worship with us through the Union for Reform Judaism’s Courtesy Reciprocal Seating Program.

We suggest a minimum donation of chai ($18.00). With a minimum donation of chai, a notice of your gift will be sent to the honoree and mention will be published monthly in The Voice.

General Fund: Donations used for operating expenses.

Tree of Life: Each ‘Rock’ and ‘Star of David’ is a donation of $540.00; each ‘Leaf ’ is $240.00. The contribution must be received in its entirety before engraving is ordered.

Prayerbook Fund: Purchase of prayerbooks and Torah commentaries. To dedicate: Prayerbooks - $50 Torah commentary - $100 High Holy Day prayerbooks - $108 - each set

Religious School

Religious School Fund: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for Jewish learning in both Sunday and Hebrew Schools.

Scholar In Residence Endowment Fund: Supports the endowment established by Shirley and Henry Kraus. This fund enables Temple Shalom to bring visiting scholars to the Temple as an educational benefit to the membership.

Religious School Enrichment Fund: Donations augment the Religious School budget to enrich the education of our children.

The Low Family Endowment Fund: To secure the future of Temple Shalom and Reform Judaism in Southwest Florida.

Polster Religious School Scholarship Fund: To supplement Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

The Herbert & Ruth Abramson Fund: To supplement the general operating fund and to provide enrichment for Temple functions.

Ben Calmenson Fund: Donations will be used to create sponsorships to send children to attend Camp Coleman.

The Janet & Howard Solot Endowment Fund: For general charitable uses and purposes.

Endowment Fund: Donations help to secure the future, enrich the programs and provide for emergency needs of the congregation.

Capital Reserve: Maintain and enhance buildings and grounds.

Worship

Flower Fund: Provides Bimah flowers each Shabbat. A $100.00 donation is considered to be a sponsorship in memory or in honor of a special someone or occasion.

Mitzvah Baskets Fund: A $100.00 donation will purchase several hundred dollars of food for JFCS. Dr. Philip & Shirley Gilbert Music Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement of music at Temple Shalom.
