French author Emmanuel Eydoux, the pen name for Roger Eisinger, presents an understanding that to be Jewish means wearing a mantle of responsibility. One is expected to be God’s holy partner in this world, acting to make the world whole by following the lessons and values instilled by our people, regardless of how others are behaving. To paraphrase the words of the great rabbi Hillel, “One must strive to be a mensch, even in a place where others are not.”

That burden of responsibility weighs upon each of us – for we all strive to fulfill the teaching from Leviticus, “You shall be holy, for I, Adonai, am holy!” Yet, despite all our efforts, we know that we have fallen short, and missed the mark. There have been times when we allowed ourselves to take the easier approach, eschewing what was right, in favor of convenience and the path of least resistance. Those missteps begin to weigh on us too, creating a sense of longing for return to what we know was the right path. We have even given that feeling a name – guilt.

There is no individual without blemish, all have work to do, and we grow stronger sharing these experiences as part of a holy community. Which is why this month we will gather at Temple Shalom, as Jews gather around the world, to mark the start of our New Year, and ten days later for a solemn Day of Atonement. The start of the New Year demands of us an accounting for our actions from the year just finished, and the Day of Atonement offers the chance for a fresh start, and the return to the path of holiness that we desire. Combined together, one has the recipe for a healthy spiritual future – having accepted the mistakes of the past, while looking forward to a future year and the opportunity to once more follow the convictions of our heart.

May we all find the spiritual cleansing we seek, the wisdom and courage to follow the right path, and the inspiration to live up to the highest ideals of what it means to be God’s partners in making our world whole and holy.

On behalf of Jennifer, my family, and all of our Temple Family, may 5776 be full of blessing, laughter, love, and hope for you and all those you love.

The ten days starting with Rosh Hashanah and ending with Yom Kippur are commonly known as the Days of Awe (Yamim Noraim) or the Days of Repentance. The Yamim Noraim are about introspection, internal “housekeeping” and starting afresh. It is a time for reflection and atonement for our past year's sins, wrongs and dead-ends, clearing up the way for a fresh start. In short, it is our version of the New Year's Resolutions. Tashlich is part of this cleansing process.

At its most basic, tashlich (which means "to cast away") is a spiritual ceremony designed to symbolically cast away one’s sins as we celebrate the New Year and prepare for Yom Kippur.

Pieces of bread are used to symbolize sins, which are then cast off into the water and taken away. Any body of water may be used, but a running body of water (such as a river or ocean) is preferred.

I love tashlich, it’s such a beautiful and wonderful Jewish practice. It goes from having a simple communal value to having a deep personal value. In a way, it crystallizes the entire experience of the High Holy Days. It’s very personal — only you know what is in your heart. The practice of cleansing one’s sins takes a physical act and makes it a spiritual one. Just like Pesach, when we clean out the chametz from our homes, tashlich is a physical act that shows how our faith requires action.

Typically, tashlich is observed on the first day of Rosh Hashanah, unless that happens to fall on Shabbat. In that case, tashlich may be performed on the second day of Rosh Hashanah. Technically, tashlich can be done any time up until Hoshanah Rabbah, the last day of Sukkot.

When it comes to choosing bread, there are lots of opinions. A popular e-mail joke has been circulating for years about the appropriate variety of bread to use for various types of sins. For example: For ordinary sins—White bread For exotic sins—French or Italian bread For dark sins—Pumpernickel For complex sins—Multi-grain For truly warped sins—Pretzels For sins of indecision—Waffles For being ill-tempered—Sourdough For excessive use of irony—Rye bread For continual bad jokes—Corn bread For hardening our heart—Jelly doughnuts The humorous options add a bit of levity to an otherwise solemn observance. Truth be told, any bread will do. Whichever bread you choose to use, I hope you’ll join us for our beautiful tashlich ceremony on Monday, September 14 at 4pm at the Vineyards Park.

During the High Holy Days season, we reflect on the past and plan for the future. As we enter the building for services, we sense that the Temple seems somewhat different this year. There are newly refurbished spaces – the Tribute Garden and the Perman Library – where we can connect with one another. The buzz of activity as we greet one another – L’Shanah Tovah – is not unlike past years, but perhaps there is a seed of difference. Maybe you have had an opportunity to meet someone new to you, sharing your story with this new acquaintance and listening to theirs. Perhaps you attended a Shabbat dinner in someone’s home or at the Temple and made a new friend.

Maybe on Mitzvah Day you worked side by side with someone you did not know before. Maybe you volunteered to participate in a program or project that caught your interest. Maybe you shared a concern regarding the Temple and someone listened. Perhaps you welcomed a stranger at the Oneg Shabbat.

Making new connections, engaging in Temple activities enhances the experience of “belonging” at Temple Shalom. The Board of Trustees, the One Family Team, the staff, the teachers, the many volunteers are listening and planning in order to provide a meaningful Temple experience for our members. With our diligent staff providing the support for all that happens at Temple Shalom, much of the work of implementing the many programs, projects, events, and fundraisers is carried out by our volunteers, our members. Their dedicated involvement – in time, effort, and talent – is what brings our plans to life.

But of even greater importance, is what the experience of involvement can mean to you. Participation may mean something different to each volunteer, but most would agree that being connected to the people and happenings at Temple is an important and positive part of their lives. Please know that all are welcome and let us hear from you. It will change your life!

Above & Beyond “Why Do I Contribute?”

My name is Yale Freeman. I am chairing the Above and Beyond program at Temple Shalom.

You will read in the Voice, over the next several months, stories from congregants as to “Why do I contribute?”

Our efforts are simple. Temple dues pay only a portion of those expenses that make Temple Shalom a leading synagogue in Southwest Florida. Our synagogue needs your help to remain this way.

Several years ago, as President of Temple Shalom, I shared with you during the High Holidays how our Temple has touched the lives of my family. Temple Shalom and its congregants were always there for us. They continue to be there. That is why I contribute. More importantly, I know my contribution keeps Temple Shalom strong for all of us. Confronting the Past As we enter the high holiday season, we individually begin to reflect on the past year. We make a conscious effort to recognize our failings and shortcomings - all with the goal of righting past mistakes (intentional or not) and making ourselves better for the future. This is rarely a comfortable experience. It is hard to admit that we have hurt others, that we have made choices we are not proud of, or that we have just missed the mark in general. It takes great strength and humility to look inwards and confront the past. It takes even greater strength and humility to make sincere apologies and take steps to change the future.

At the beginning of August, I spent ten days in Germany on a trip for Jewish young professionals. I had mixed feelings about going - this is the country that began the most horrific events ever known to mankind and perpetuated the persecution of the Jewish people (among others). At the same time, this is what I sought to understand. How could I reconcile Germany of the past with Germany of today?

I had an incredible journey - filled with highs and lows, emotional and painful at times, joyful and filled with hope at other times. I interacted with local Germans both Jewish and not. I got to know the country and begin reconciling the past and the present. The most notable and incredible thing I experienced, however, was the way Germany confronts the past. It took many years and is still an ongoing debate - but Germany as a whole does not hide in the sand and refuse to acknowledge their most brutal past. They confront it head on and work to honor the memories of those six million Jews that perished at the hand of their dictator. They acknowledge the lack of intervention at a societal level, the discomfort of watching their neighbors be targeted, deported, and murdered - all while turning a blind eye. There are small gold squares set into the sidewalks all over Germany, noting where Jewish business owners were forced out and marking their memory. These squares detail the fate of the Jewish business owners in the neighborhood for all to see.

They call them tripping stones - a bad translation, perhaps, but also uncomfortably suitable. We would call them stepping stones, but tripping stones is more suitable in truth. You gently stumble over them and look down to see a tangible representation of the ugly past. It trips you up, gives you pause. Germany could easily have refused to acknowledge the past, let alone work so hard to make amends and honor memories.

Germany is not perfect and still has a ways to go, but I find it poignant and beautiful to see them embracing the Jewish values of confronting the past and changing the future - true teshuva.

Here at Temple Shalom Preschool our staff is so excited to start another year of growth, dedication, and challenges. Their growth, both physically and emotionally, during their absence over the summer months, never ceases to amaze us.

With each New Year, our commitment to improvement and development continues. Our amazing enrichments and superb curriculum not only help to maintain Temple Shalom Preschool’s status as the unsurpassed preschool program in Naples area, but raise the standards of education enabling staff to bring out the best in each of our students, raising self-esteem, confidence, and a firm foundation for their school years ahead.

Did you know that Temple Shalom Preschool is the only preschool in the area to have a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) curriculum imbedded in our

already incredible program?

In 2012, we established Professor Einstein's Laboratorium; an amazing science lab exposing our children to the wonders of experiments, plants, biology, ecology, the human body and more.

In 2013, we opened our state of the art, Technology Lab featuring computers, cameras, tablets and other technical equipment geared toward the preschool age years.

For years, our students have been learning math through problem solving, manipulatives and discovery, not just memorization.

This year, we are now proud to introduce the 'E' to our STEM program. Our Pre-K classes will now be exposed to Engineering through building, problem solving, creativity and imagination. They will be given materials and asked open ended questions on how to solve a problem. Through peer discussion, they will come up with solutions which they will explain. Through trial and error, they will explore what they already know, experiment and come up with the answer. This class will be teacher guided - student led; and yes, they CAN do this.

The Temple Shalom shiva minyan group visits those in mouring to comfort and support the bereaved. Their presence has been appreciated by many members of our community during the occasion of their loss and personally rewarding to the members of the group as well.

This group of dedicated individuals is looking for additional members.

Attending a shiva and comforting the bereaved is a mitzvah.

Sisterhood News

Debra Antzis, Sisterhood President Women giving directions figure prominently in my childhood memories of the High Holidays.

Both of my grandmothers were commanding women, my mother is one of three girls, and my father had only sisters. My aunts’ children were mostly girls, and we were two girls and one boy in my family. At family gatherings and holidays, it seemed like there was a flock of women in charge in the kitchen and a bevy of girls running errands and doing chores. My grandfathers sat at the head of the table and blessed the wine and challah, and my father, uncles, brother and male cousins stepped in when some muscle was needed, but it was the women who made sure everything got done.

My grandmothers are no longer with us, and my sister’s first grandson, Billy, was born this year. My Mom turned 80 in August. She is, thank god, in pretty good health and enjoyed celebrating the occasion with her family. Thinking about my Mother’s life, and all that has happened in the world in the past 80 years, is pretty awe-inspiring. Franklin Roosevelt was president when she was born, and John F. Kennedy was the first president she voted for. She saw her uncles and cousins go off to fight World War II, and she lost relatives in the Holocaust, including her Aunt Devorah, for whom I am named. She has seen other momentous developments in our world: The Cold War, the Civil Rights Movement, Viet Nam, Watergate . . . television, computers, cell phones, internet, wifi, smartphones . . .

All these changes require constants in our lives to help us keep our balance. Family, religion, and community provide continuity, stabilizing us and helping us navigate change. Sisterhood does too! Please join us – we can’t know what changes Billy’s generation will see in the next 80 years, but let’s help provide the balance in their lives.

Please accept my and my family’s wishes for a happy, healthy and sweet New Year.

Ronald McDonald House is very glad to receive all the pop tops that Sisterhood has been bringing them. Please continue to bring your pop tops to Temple. Place them in the Sisterhood mailbox in the office. From there they are sent to the Ronald McDonald House. The proceeds from recycling the pop tops will help the children staying there.

Synopsis: As the son of the Imam of the local Brooklyn mosque, eleven year-old Daud has to juggle the high expectations of his Father (Maz Jobrani) and his feelings of isolation and difference– even from his peers in the Muslim community.

Through an innocent act of good faith, Daud inadvertently befriends a group of Jewish boys who mistake him as a fellow classmate at their orthodox school, in the neighboring Jewish community. A genuine friendship grows between Daud and Yoav, one of the Jewish boys, and his family. Unable to resist the joy of a camaraderie that he has never felt before, David, as he is known to the kids, is drawn into a complicated dilemma inspired by youthful deceit and the best of intentions.

ENDOWMENT CORNER - For Now and Forever

– Rabbi Ishmael, Babylonian Talmud, Bava Batra 175b Judaism is spiritual. Judaism is practical. So much of Jewish tradition deals with daily life and therefore with the economics of daily life. In fact, more than 100 of the 613 Commandments in the Torah deal with economic issues.

Like Judaism itself, the subject of endowments is both spiritual and practical. Endowments are about leaving a lasting and meaningful Jewish legacy that reflects your values and priorities, while helping to ensure a Jewish future. Endowments are also about investing today to help finance day-to-day life tomorrow.

I want to share with you the goals of our newly revitalized Endowment and Planned Giving Program. This is the first of several monthly articles which will explain the rationale for our planning, and provide information about the program and opportunities for giving both currently and long-term.

Our purpose is to provide long-range stability for our Temple while generating income to assist in meeting future needs and opportunities, including new programs and positions. Like most synagogues, our annual commitment (dues) covers only about 70% of our expenses, and over the years, a series of short-term stopgap fundraising measures have been employed to make up the difference. Endowment funds offer an enduring source of revenue generation that will grow and enable us to thoughtfully and strategically manage our current and future needs. This very necessary effort, identified by our strategic plan, is long overdue and much needed. The leadership and commitment to establish and maintain a permanent program are now firmly in place. And that’s why we are asking you to help us with the next steps.

We have close to a half million dollars in endowment funds currently. That is a start, but our goal is to build a $10 million endowment that can be expected to generate $400,000 to $500,000 annually to assist in funding current expenses, while leaving the principal untouched. We could reduce the strain of balancing the budget through fundraising, while generating additional revenues for new programs, positions or other needs as they arise. And all without spending countless hours and dollars on planning - and attending - annual fundraising events!

Until we reach our goal of several million dollars, experts agree that it is not prudent to use the income—rather, we will allow the endowment to grow by a combination of reinvesting income and principal. Next month I will address some of the major aspects of our Endowment and Planned Giving Program.

Religious School

Showing We Care

Contributions made to the various Temple Shalom funds are wonderful ways to show your appreciation of family and friends, to celebrate happy occasions and to honor the memories of loved ones. We suggest a minimum donation of chai ($18.00). With a minimum donation of $18.00, a notice of your gifts will be sent to the honoree and mention will be published monthly in The Voice.

Religious School: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for Jewish learning in both Sunday and Hebrew Schools.

Religious School Enrichment Fund: Donations augment the Religious School budget to enrich the education of our children.

Polster Religious School Scholarship Fund: To purchase or supplement Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Ben Calmenson Fund: Donations will be used to create sponsorships to send children to attend Camp Coleman.

General Fund: Donations used for operating expenses.

Rabbi Abraham Shusterman Children's Center Memorial Fund: To support our Religious School and Preschool.

Tree of Life: Each ‘Rock’ and ‘Star of David’ is a donation of $540.00; each ‘Leaf ’ is $240.00. The contribution must be received in its entirety before engraving is ordered.

Sisterhood Religious School Scholarship Fund: To provide Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Operations

Burn The Mortgage Fund: Established by Gerry and Pearl Sugarman to reduce payment of any existing mortgage.

Worship

Memorial Fund: Donations made in honor of a loved one who has passed.

William Freschel Kiddush Fund: All donations help provide Kiddush Lunch each Saturday following worship services.

A $150 donation is considered to be a sponsorship to honor a special someone or occasion.

Flower Fund: Provides Bimah flowers each Shabbat. A $150.00 donation is considered to be a sponsorship in memory or in honor of a special someone or occasion.

Mitzvah Baskets: A $100.00 donation will purchase several hundred dollars of food for JFCS.

Joseph S. Weinfeld Faculty Development Fund: Donations support both curriculum and teaching skill enrichment activities for Sunday and Hebrew School teachers.

Youth Activities Fund: Donations provide financial support for children of our congregation to attend Camp Coleman, to take part in regional/national youth conventions, and to experience a summer in Israel.

Preschool

Preschool Fund: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for the Preschool.

Preschool Enrichment Fund: The enhancement of curriculum, educational programs and experiences.

Arby Lipman Children's Library: Children and adolescent books and magazine subscriptions, and supplies are purchased.

Jack and Charlotte Ward Family Children's Music Shelf: Audio and video musical tapes for children.

Endowment

Endowment Fund: Donations help to secure the future, enrich the programs and provide for emergency needs of the congregation.

Scholar In-Residence Endowment Fund: Supports the endowment established by Shirley and Henry Kraus. This fund enables Temple Shalom to bring visiting scholars to the Temple as an educational benefit to the membership.

The Herbert & Ruth Abramson Fund: To supplement the general operating fund and to provide enrichment for Temple functions.

Clergy/Leadership

Rabbi Miller’s Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes,and general enhancement of the Rabbi's work.

Cantor Azu's Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes, and general enhancement of the Cantor's work.

Leadership Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement and enrichment of leadership programs at Temple Shalom.

Library

Rabbi James & Jane Perman Library: Books, magazine subscriptions and supplies are purchased.

Social Action

David and Lillian Thalenfeld Fund for Social Justice: Provides support for Temple participation in social justice events and activities.

Above & Beyond I/We Care

Donations above regular dues.
