Adam F. Miller Spilling into the New Year An American university professor traveled to meet with one of the leading Zen masters of the day. The Zen master welcomed his guest and invited him inside for a cup of tea. Grateful for the hospitality, the professor agreed and sat down. Placing a cup on the table, the Zen master began pouring the hot beverage. The American watched patiently as the tea slowly filled the cup. When it reached the top and began to spill over, he called out to his host. “Stop pouring - the cup is full! There is no more room for tea,” explained the guest. “I see,” replied the Zen Master. “A full cup must have some of its contents spilled out before more can be added. Your mind is like the cup, you must pour out some of what you already know before you can truly begin to learn.” I shared that parable, one of my favorites, at the leadership seminar that I attended this summer. Our facilitator asked what we hoped to gain from the experience, and I wanted to convey that I came with an open mind and a willingness to listen to feedback about my leadership. The zen story teaches that in order to learn, one must first spill a little out of your metaphorical cup, in order to make room for new perspectives or wisdom. Looking back now, that openness allowed me to have a remarkable experience as I learned more about my own leadership style, strengths, and areas for growth. Letting go of one’s assumptions requires a willingness to be vulnerable. It is easier, and honestly more comforting, to know the answers. Yet, if we believe that all of our information is complete, what is left for us to learn? We see this knowledge impasse in our society, when two individuals fervently argue over a topic, each believing that he or she could make the other person change their mind and see their point of view. But, since both went in believing that they alone have the right answers, leaving no room to listen or learn, both individuals often leave feeling more frustrated. In only a few weeks’ time, Rosh Hashanah will be upon us with the start of a New Year. With the holiday comes our annual time of reflection, looking back over our deeds from the past year. In addition to making amends and atoning for the mistakes that have been made, think about what fills your cup. What are the assumptions that you have about yourself, or others around you, that influence your interactions? What knowledge or perspectives do you have that prevent you from learning and growing? This year, allow yourself to be vulnerable. Spill out some of your assumptions, so that you have the opportunity for new learning and growth. May the space that you create in your cup be filled this year with sweetness, joy and blessing. Wishing you and all your loved ones a Shanah Tova u’Mtukah – a happy, healthy and sweet new year. I’d like to share with you the story of Raphael Schächter. You may not have heard of him, but he was a hero from the Holocaust. Founder of the Prague Chamber Opera, Schächter was arrested in 1941 and sent to Terezín, about thirty miles north of Prague. Music being an important part of his life, he smuggled in one copy of Verdi’s Requiem, an 1874 composition for Catholic funerals. During his captivity, Schächter taught the Requiem to a chorus of 150 artists, scholars and others who staged concerts of opera, contemporary music and chamber music at Terezín. The prisoners’ learned the Requiem by rote, because there was no score other than Schächter’s and only one piano. Raphael Schächter used his musical knowledge, his artistry and his sensitivity to pull people out of the graves they were headed to. They were in a state of despair and he made it possible for them to be reinvigorated. These Jewish prisoners of the Nazis used music to defy their oppressors, find courage and sustain hope. The members of the chorus were starving, sick laborers dying from the hellish conditions of forced labor and still the choir members gathered to practice for hours and find a kind of freedom in music. Performed sixteen times between September, 1943 and June, 1944, the group’s final performance was part of a propaganda campaign directed by Nazi Otto Adolf Eichmann, one of the major organizers of the Holocaust. In 2013, the stunning documentary “Defiant Requiem” was released giving us, the viewers, a perspective of creating beauty in the midst of the worst ugliness imagined. The film highlights the courageous artists in the Terezín Concentration Camp during World War II and Rafael Schächter’s incredible story of courage. We will be showing “Defiant Requiem” as a part of our Selichot service on Saturday, September 21 at 7:30pm. As we begin to prepare for the High Holy Days and the upcoming New Year, may we also embrace the courage of Raphael Schächter. L’Shalom, Cantor Donna M. Azu
Thank you, Jewish Federation of Greater Naples! The Temple Shalom Religious School and Preschool were awarded substantial grants from the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples. These grants will partially fund scholarships so that financial difficulties are never a barrier to Jewish education. The grants also fund our innovative new program, Shalom Yeladim, a free monthly class at Temple Shalom for parents and little ones ages two to four years old. The program features crafts, yoga, music and fun ways to introduce children to Jewish learning. Thank you, Federation, for being such a generous and supportive partner in Jewish education. 4

And they shall make me a holy [place], and I may dwell among them. (Exodus 25:8) When the ancient Israelites wandered the desert for 40 years, God established a place of worship for them, known as the Mishkan, or Tabernacle, in which God will be “residing among them.” In order to create a physical place that would inspire the hearts and souls of our ancestors, God chose skilled craftsmen, Bezalel and Oholiab to decorate it with finely-woven tapestries and intricately designed ornaments. God knew that a beautiful setting animates and magnifies our prayer because our senses are heightened and engaged. On a mystical level, the beautiful object or surroundings we encounter are themselves elevated and become part of the spiritual experience. Our beloved Temple Shalom is a modern descendant of the Mishkan and this tradition. A select group of Jews living in Naples had the vision and commitment to our collective future to construct a new home for Temple Shalom over thirty years ago. This foresight led them to design our current building with care and love. It has served us well. Our spiritual home was built in 1991, and has seen thousands of Shabbat and holiday services, b’nai mitzvah, community events and programs over the years. We have laughed, cried, studied, sung, noshed, shared our stories and encountered the Divine together in our Sanctuary and Social Hall. We have created many memories here together. It is now time to freshen up and make some capital improvements to our facility. Our building has weathered the harsh conditions of Southwest Florida, including Hurricane Irma. Like many of us, it is starting to show signs of age, wear and tear. We recently completed a new roof for the school wing and replaced one of the large air conditioners there. The exterior of the building was pressure cleaned, sealed and painted to protect it from the elements, while the parking lot was resealed and repainted. The Front Office is getting a fresh coat of paint and new carpet after 20 years of heavy use. Jewish tradition encourages us to incorporate the principle of hiddur mitzvah, literally meaning, “the beautification of a mitzvah” by recognizing aesthetic values as part of our religious practice. Building and Grounds Chairman, Ed Alexander, and his committee of designers - Barbara Chester, Jennifer Marchionda and Claudia Baer - have done a fabulous job bringing this principle to life. Of course, none of this work would even be possible without our Facilities Manager, Victor Lucas and his staff, Pedro Cruz and Rick Holsbeke. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of Paula Brody and Merrill Hassenfeld, the Sanctuary, Social Hall, Foyer and Social Hall Restrooms will be updated and redecorated this fall. Our goal is to have this phase of renovations completed by the High Holy Days for your enjoyment. There are many ways to participate in this project, and we need your help to make it all happen. For example, you can dedicate a new, modern Memorial Board in memory of a loved one or choose something else that is close to your heart. A woman approached me at Friday night services recently. She said, “I see that the chairs in the Sanctuary are getting a little threadbare. I come regularly and I so enjoy the service. I would like to help with the cost of reupholstering them.” If you feel similarly moved to join this effort in some way, please call me so that we can find the best way for you to invest in our holy spaces that is meaningful to you. Our services are a rich and beautiful tapestry of prayer and song, incorporating both traditional and modern liturgy and melodies that speak to the intellect and the soul. Children are welcome to attend our High Holy Day services. We also offer Family Services, which attract multi-generational families and those with young children on Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur afternoons. Family services are specially designed to inspire and engage children and those who love them, around the meanings and messages of the High Holy Days. We also offer babysitting for those who prefer to let us care for their little ones while they worship. There is a small cost and reservations are required by September 4 to ensure sufficient staffing. Please see the form on page 10. Whether you need a space for the kids to wiggle around or a break for yourself, we’ve got you covered! The Jane and Rabbi James Perman Library will be open and available with a toy wagon for children that need a break. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Ushers & Greeters Ushers and Greeters play a very important role in the High Holy Days. Greeters provide a warm welcome to people as they come to services and assist with finding name badges and handing out programs. Ushers welcome people into the Sanctuary and Social Hall and assist with seating, large print prayer books and hearing devices. High Holy Days Flower Sponsorships Sponsoring the flowers that decorate the bimah on the High Holy Days is a lovely way to beautify the Sanctuary and start the new year off with a gift to support Temple Shalom! It is also a meaningful way to honor a loved one, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, commemorate a wedding, birthday or other important event that occurred since last Rosh HaShanah or that you are looking forward to in the year to come. Memorial Book Reminder
At Temple Shalom, the act of remembering our loved ones who have passed is done in a very tangible way. We publish a Sefer Zichronot, a Memorial Book, listing names of our loved ones who have died since last Yom Kippur, and those we remember from years past. A copy of that book is placed in the Holy Ark, and the memorial prayers are said in the service. If you have not yet returned your Memorial Book form please do so no later than September 13. If you need another form, please call the Temple office at 239-455-3030 or visit the Temple Shalom website at www.naplestemple.org. Four years ago, Temple Shalom began using the new High Holy Days prayer book, Mishkan HaNefesh (The Sanctuary of the Soul). The new book incorporates many of the progressions that have become central to our worship - gender sensitive language, transliteration of the Hebrew, and opportunities for personal reflection and meditation. Mishkan HaNefesh brought deeper meaning and new reflections to our worship. In keeping with the spirit of the High Holy Days, you can dedicate a set of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur prayer books in memory of a loved one or in honor of a special person or event. Believe it or not, teachers are just as excited as the children are to begin the new school year. Teachers love to teach but they also love to learn and are known to be life-long learners. The best teachers keep abreast of recent research in their field, and continually seek to implement the best instructional methods by reflecting on their own practices. Our dynamic group of teachers spent two weeks last month at the double tasks of setting up classrooms for their students and delving into new curriculum materials. Through funding provided in part from the Temple Shalom Preschool Art Auction, held this past spring, the preschool has been able to purchase new curriculum materials. The Creative Curriculum, published by Teaching Strategies, uses hands-on, project-based investigations. Teachers build children’s confidence, creativity and critical thinking skills, plus they promote positive learning outcomes. The Teaching Strategies consultant, Laura Hooks, spent two days with our staff, presenting workshops based on hands-on experiences, integrated domains of learning and theme-based topics. For example, one topical theme, Simple Machines, included lessons in language, math, science, and technology. Dr. Kelly Roy, head of the Early Childhood Department at Florida SouthWestern College, presented a workshop on Creating a Learning Environment in the morning and then provided one-on-one consults in each classroom to support the staff in room arrangement for optimal learning environments. The teachers focused on modifying the existing environments to be child and family friendly, barrier free, and inclusionary. Rabbi Ariel Boxman presented a workshop which featured a “crash course” on Judaic content to be incorporated throughout the curriculum in the preschool program. Rabbi Boxman focused on Shabbat and the major holidays, and the workshop culminated with a visit to the sanctuary where all teachers had an opportunity to see the Torah unrolled and to observe the religious elements on the bima. What an honor it is to be joining the Temple Shalom family and clergy team! Over the last two months I have met many wonderful people and have been welcomed warmly. For those of you who I have yet to meet, I look forward to getting to know you over the coming months! As the summer is coming to a close, the Temple Shalom staff and I are busy preparing for the beginning of the school year and growing more and more excited as each day goes by. I am looking forward to welcoming the children on Sunday, September 8, for opening day and beginning our year of learning, playing and exploring. A wise educator once stated that on the first day of religious school, if your kids know the Aleph-Bet before everyone’s name in the class, everyone gets an F. Don’t even open the book on the first day! This is my philosophy. While our religious school aims to educate our children and provide them with meaningful Jewish learning and experiences, it is equally important that we create an environment where children feel included, welcomed and part of a community. Just as much as I want a child to walk out knowing basic Jewish concepts, I want him/her to leave each day feeling good, empowered and happy. Our teachers and staff are prepared to facilitate community building within the classroom and create a safe and open space for all our children. I am excited to begin the year, meet you and your families and embark on a journey of learning, praying and doing! Below is a schedule for opening day. Selichot A Time to Pause and R eflect
Please join us for a beautiful Selichot service on Saturday, September 21 at 7:30pm. We begin with a screening of the film “Defiant Requiem,” a documentary film highlighting the most dramatic example of intellectual and artistic courage in the Theresienstadt (Terezín) Concentration Camp during World War II. It is the remarkable story of Rafael Schächter, a brilliant, young Czech conductor who was arrested and sent to Terezín in 1941. He demonstrated moral leadership under the most brutal circumstances, determined to sustain courage and hope for his fellow prisoners by enriching their souls through great music. His most extraordinary act was to recruit 150 prisoners and teach them Verdi’s Requiem by rote in a dank cellar using a single score, over multiple rehearsals, and after grueling days of forced labor. There will be a brief discussion of the movie followed by the Selichot service.

Bereavement Group for Members of the Temple Shalom Community In the spirit of our tradition, which calls us to perform the mitzvah of Nihum Avelim (comforting mourners), Temple Shalom will be offering a Bereavement Support Group for people who are grieving for a loved one. The group, which will observe confidentiality of communication, will meet on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon beginning November 1. Group size will be limited to twelve people. The facilitators, Arline Kaplan, Ph.D., and Leslie Wasserman, M.A., are members of Temple Shalom. At a Relational Judaism Think Tank meeting in St. Louis in February, Tussy and Neil Shnider presented the success story of Temple Shalom’s One Family and details of our process as described in her book, One Congregation’s Journey of Change: A Guide to Enriching Relationships in Your Congregation. Tussy has also been invited to write a description of her book to be included in the upcoming printing of Ron Wolfson’s latest book, The Relational Judaism Handbook. Mazel tov to Iris Shur! MEN’S CLUB After serving as Men’s Club President for the past twelve years, I have decided to step down from the Presidency, effective December 31, 2019. This decision was a very difficult and soul-searching one for me to make. I cherish the time that I spent these past many years leading this organization.

Through the years I’ve worked as hard as I could to bring Men’s Club to a higher level within our Temple and the Jewish community. We’ve come a long way and have done a lot of good for our Temple family, our Naples’ Jewish community and beyond. I’m proud of the organization I leave behind. I know the Men’s Club will continue to be a pillar of our Temple. I will be staying on the Board as Immediate Past President and will assist all I can to make the Men’s Club Executive Board transition a smooth and successful one. In addition, I am currently speaking with a number of members who will be joining the Board. Adding their strength to ours will ensure our continued future success. On behalf of the entire Men’s Club Board, I would like to wish you and your loved ones a very happy, healthy, prosperous and above all, a peaceful New Year. We are all looking forward to an exciting year and to greeting you at High Holy Days services and upcoming events.

SISTERHOOD Welcome Back I hope everyone had a restful summer. The High Holy Days are just around the corner and Season will soon begin. During the summer, Vice President, Ida Margolis and her committee worked very diligently to put together an interesting schedule for luncheons and events. We will be trying something new this year - night meetings. We want to include women who cannot come to anything during the day, but want to participate. Sisterhood is an extension of One Family – no one is left behind. The following will give you an idea of just what Sisterhood does throughout the year and where our fundraising money goes: • $15,000 each year to the Religious School for the RAC teen trip to Washington, DC • Support the cost of tablecloth service in the Social Hall • Publish the Temple Directory every two years • Operate the Judaica Shop • Support and prepare the Onegs • Contribute to Mitzvah Day

Tikkun Olam Council Chair Ken Goldstein Yom HaTzedek 86,400 If you are like me, the older we get the more significant each new year becomes. As the Days of Awe approach, we think about how we want to use the time we have remaining. Yom Ha Tzedek means Day of Justice…one day is 86,400 seconds. A quote by Emily Goldberg, a high school junior in New York City, is a powerful reminder of this opportunity: “...we have the potential to build and improve each day or utterly destroy it. Over time, seconds tend to pile up, some wasted and unnoticed and others misused and neglected; frequently we extend these seconds of regretted decisions and poor judgments into minutes, days, and weeks. It is only during the final days before entering a new year that we stop and reflect upon them.” Our next Mitzvah Day is Sunday, January 12 - but one day to make a real difference in the lives of those in need in our community. Last year we packed 50,00 meals, worked on Beading for Betterment and had a successful turnout at the Bloodmobile. We are discussing some exciting new ways to help others such as collecting undies and socks for Grace Place, a tentative “knitzvah” project as well as Meals of Hope and many other activities. We are also encouraging our members to write or call our elected representatives on immigration concerns as well as other issues. And of course, no matter your political persuasion, make sure you are eligible to vote. Let’s use our 86,400 seconds each day wisely. May this year bring good health, peace, happiness and justice.
