THE RAINBOW OF HOPE AFTER THE STORM
AMessagefromTempleShalomLeadership
Yom Kippur ended this year on a powerful note, and I am not talking about the shofar blast.
I shared at Kol Nidre a story that began on Rosh Hashanah, when the residents of Sanibel were forced to evacuate their homes as Hurricane Ian approached. As the waters began to arrive, congregation Bat Yam feared for the safety of its two Torah scrolls. Melissa and Scot Congress, daughter and son-in-law of Bernie Weiss and the late Helene Weiss, of blessed memory, brought the scrolls from the synagogue ark to the vault in their jewelry store. Placing them on the highest shelf possible.
Melissa and Scot returned several days after the hurricane by boat to check on the scrolls. Accompanied by an NBC news crew, they found everything on the island damaged or destroyed by the water. The only two dry items – the two Torah scrolls. With tears in their eyes, they carried the scrolls back to the boat. One was given to Beth El in Fort Myers, close to where many of the displaced Bat Yam members remain. The other, is now here at Temple Shalom for safe keeping. That scroll sat on our bimah throughout Yom Kippur, a visible symbol of hope.
At the conclusion of Yom Kippur, just before the shofar blast, we placed the Sanibel scroll in our Ark. It will serve for us as a reminder, recalling what we have been through with this hurricane, honoring our collective resilience, and lifting our spirits each time we see that scroll in our ark. At the same time, we know that for as long as that scroll remains here, our work repairing our community from Hurricane Ian is not yet done.
Our Temple Shalom family fully embraces our collective responsibility to help those whose lives have been devastated by the hurricane. Immediately after Ian, members opened their doors to let in neighbors and friends needing power, a hot shower, or a dry space. Individuals gave generously of their time and resources to bring assistance to strangers they had never met. Days after the storm, we collected more than ten truckloads of supplies for the shelter in Lee County. Dozens of Temple members stood shoulder to shoulder packing thousands of fresh meals with our partners from Meals of Hope. Others comforted their friends after tragic losses and began helping them to literally pick up the pieces.
The Rainbow of Hope, chaired by Bruce and Carol Sherman, began at Yom Kippur. Since that time, we organized cleanups for members whose homes and property were damaged beyond repair, gathered food for the Harry Chapin Food Bank, and gave financial assistance to members struggling after this natural disaster. Working in partnership with other synagogues in our region, we are channeling resources sent from other congregations to replace damaged equipment at the Temple Beth El preschool in Fort Myers, cleaning up neighborhoods and helping everyone in need, including those outside of our Temple Family. Sign up for the Rainbow of Hope, to learn about more volunteer opportunities, including upcoming trips to Sanibel and other areas.
Hurricane Ian was truly a catastrophic event for our southwest Florida community. Yet, we see the true colors of our Temple Family, and the community coming out, as our Rainbow of Hope shines bright for all Southwest Florida. Together we will make it through these challenges, together we will find strength, together we will be a source of light and hope. May we go in the days ahead from strength to strength and blessing to blessing.
Temple Shalom is partnering with Temple Beth El in Fort Myers, Bat Yam Temple on Sanibel, the Jewish Congregation of Marco Island, and Naples Jewish Congregation to bring aid to those needing the most assistance across Southwest Florida.
• Opportunities will include efforts with local partner organizations, such as Meals of Hope, the Harry Chapin Food Bank, and the United Way.
• Distributing goods and gift cards to those in need
• Packing meals for those facing food insecurity
• Clean up projects around Southwest Florida
• Collecting non-perishable foods
• Organizing donations from other congregations and communities
• Reviewing and allocating larger requests for assistance

KADIMA
Kadima is an outdoor adventure group created for anyone who enjoys being physically active and experiencing the natural beauty of SWFL. Each month, we will set out on a different adventure, from hiking to kayaking, paddle boarding to horseback riding. Our goal is to get outside, get our muscles moving, and get to know our fellow Temple members and friends in a completely different setting.
Great for parents and teens, fitness lovers, and anyone itching to get outside and into nature. Each adventure will vary in physical intensity. We will do our best to represent intensity levels accurately for each event so that you can judge whether that month’s adventure is right for you.
Watch your email and the next issue of The Voice for more information on the first outing in November

Did You Know Our Temple Offers Bereavement Counseling?
By Carole J. GreenA period of grieving comes to everyone sooner or later. Some feel relieved when the loved one who may have been suffering suffers no more. Nonetheless, all those who mourn the loss have a rough road ahead. Grieving is a process that can drain a person’s reservoir of emotional strength.
Four years ago, when Executive Director Deborah Fidel joined our staff, Rabbi Miller told her that there were members of our congregational family who might benefit from some sort of support group. Not one to let the grass grow under her feet, she called Leslie Wasserman and Arline Kaplan, both professional psychotherapists, and they have been offering a bereavement support group at Temple ever since.
“We began somewhere around four years ago,” says Leslie, “with the idea that anyone could come who had trouble with grief or just wanted to talk about it. We started the group with five women. Over the years, we’ve grown to 12—all widows.”
Arline describes the initial process. “We get a call from the Temple or directly from the person. We talk for a while to assess whether this person has the physical and cognitive strength to participate. We’ve only ever had to turn away one person. It takes courage to talk about what’s in your gut,” she adds. “We live in a society that doesn’t readily address illness, grief, or death. Society’s attitude is ‘get over it.’”
“We are very fortunate,” Leslie says. “All are highly intelligent, kind women. That creates a good support group.” She indicates that most of the women have stayed in the group. “Those who leave typically do so because they feel they’ve received all the help they need and can take it from there on their own.
“We meet every other Friday from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. During the COVID-19 pandemic when the Temple was closed, we met through Zoom. All members agree to maintain confidentiality about who is in the group.”
“We are back to in-person meetings now,” Arline says. “We stop at the end of May and pick it up again in October. But throughout the summer, Leslie and I are always available via telephone if someone needs support.”
Leslie feels doing this volunteer service actually rewards her. “I have seen women who have been reluctant to share, over time, become able to express their feelings and ask the group for help. That makes my heart feel great.”
Arline echoes this sentiment. “I feel honored, grateful. It has been a wonderful experience for me. I come away with much admiration and respect for the people in the group—what they’ve come

through, how supportive and empathetic they are. My heart feels so full and expanded. I have grown.”
Both women volunteer in other ways in the community, but bereavement counseling brings them the greatest sense of fulfillment. Leslie says, “Doing this kind of work is my passion. It’s my love.”
Right now, no man has indicated a desire to join a bereavement support group, but if the need should arise, both therapists say they will be happy to set up a new group just for men. They are also willing to establish a caregiver support group should one be needed. “I could help them get started,” Leslie says, but hopes that others in the congregation who have the professional backgrounds to do this work might lead it.
Deborah shared, “several of the participants have told me that the group has been invaluable in their mourning process and that they don’t know how they would have managed without this safe space to listen, talk and cry. This is what One Family means. I am just so grateful to Arline and Leslie for sharing their time and talent.”
Now that you know Temple Shalom offers such support, if you have the background and the desire to participate, let Executive Director Deborah Fidel know of your interest. Who knows, one of our new members may become a counselor for a men’s bereavement or a caregiver support group, and if you need such services as these groups offer, please reach out. Solace and understanding are but a phone call away.
THANK YOU, Arline & Leslie!

As the Days of Awe come to an end, “Mayyoubeinscribedand sealedforagoodyear.”
I was recently reminded of a story that exists among academic circles. Essentially, a philosophy professor gave a final exam where there was only one question and that question was, “Why?” Most of the students wrote long answers consuming many pages. These students mostly received a “C” grade. Several students just wrote, “Why Not” and they received the very good grade of a “B” (this was before grade inflation). Only one student received an “A.” She wrote, “Because.”
Why is really an important question, especially for us as Reform Jews. Why do we belong to a congregation? Possibly because we know it is essential to guarantee that the Jewish beliefs in justice, equality and integrity continue. “Justice, Justice You Shall Pursue,” is the primary Jewish contribution to the human spirit.
Why do we support organizations like ADL, HIAS, Food Banks, BBYO, schools, The Federation, ones that advocate for environmental health, etc.? Because of the commandment to seek justice in all forms. Specifically, why do we have a Men’s Club at Temple Shalom? Because we want to advocate for the congregation’s welfare, health and inclusion. While we have a wide variety of interests, over the past years your Men’s Club has placed a special emphasis on advocating and caring for the youth in our congregation as well as the youth in the greater community. By making sure that our youth programs are funded and supported, we are helping to guarantee that our children learn the lesson of “Justice, Justice, You Shall Pursue” as well as knowing that they should be proud of their Judaism.
This mission of ours is even more important during a period of rising antisemitism and intolerance. This year we will be working to further support our mission and increase our visibility after the decreased activity that was caused by the pandemic. Please support these endeavors by participating in our activities as well as by joining the Men’s Club and even taking active roles in leadership and creativity.
The following are just some of the scheduled activities: Men’s Club Shabbat - October 14. We will honor Ed Cohen. Deli Dinner (Janaury 8); Joint Luncheon with Sisterhood and sponsorship of Jewish Book Festival (February 14); Dinner Theater “The Jersey Boys” (March 4); Membership Breakfast (TBD).

Personal Reflections Following the Hurricane
“I know, I know. We are Your chosen people. But, once in a while, can’t You choose someone else?”
- Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof
In the past, like most people, I approached natural disasters fairly casually. I would drop off food or send a check to help those in need. My attitude has changed, however, with the arrival of Hurricane Ian’s storm surge and the flooding of my home, which is now ‘totaled’. Here are my observations as I clean up storm damage:
• We’ve all heard it before - The things that are most important are not things. Our ‘stuff’ can be replaced. We’re fortunate that we were safely away when the storm arrived.
• People are generally good and kind. There is so much animosity and loud disagreement regarding politics these days, it’s easy to forget that most folks are kind. The cleanup crews, the laundromat lady, even the insurance people did what they could to help us out with an attitude of service.
• There are always folks who have it worse than you. At the same time that I was piling my ruined ‘stuff’ in a heap along the street, there were gleaners poking through the various trash piles to see what they could find that might be useful to them.
• I’ve decided that Mother Nature can be plain nasty sometimes. After shlepping stuff out to the street and feeling my age, I’m not feeling too warm and fuzzy about Father Time these days either!
• It’s sort of in vogue these days to criticize institutions and government. But when the going gets tough, we depend so much on the National Hurricane Center, the city government, and the federal government to organize a disaster response and keep us safe. That’s what governments are designed for and they actually do it well.
• Support of friends and community is immensely helpful – the phone call to check up, the email of support, the offer of help – they are all therapeutic. Reaching out to show you care is all you need to do.
• People are incredibly resilient. Initially there’s shock, there’s grief, then there’s planning for a new future. I watched it happen with my wife and I, and then with my neighbors. It’s amazing how adaptive humans can be.
The community will undoubtedly recover from the hurricane damage. Already, life east of 41 seems back to normal. Please remember those in need and support the Rainbow of Hope, the Temple’s disaster response project to help our neighbors get back on their feet. For questions or more information, please contact Rainbow of Hope Chairs Bruce and Carol Sherman (Bruceshermanbruce2a@gmail.com; Carol - shermancarol2a@gmail.com).

Bereavement Group for Members of the Temple Shalom Community
In the spirit of our tradition, which calls us to perform the mitzvah of Nihum Avelim (comforting mourners), Temple Shalom will be offers Bereavement Support Group for widows who are grieving for a loved one. The group, which will observe confidentiality of communication, will meet on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month from 9:30am to 11:00am. The facilitators, Arline Kaplan, Ph.D., and Leslie Wasserman, M.A., are members of Temple Shalom. Both Arline and Leslie, licensed in New York and Michigan respectively, have extensive experience with groups and with people experiencing grief and loss. “We are hopeful that sharing our stories with empathic, compassionate others will allow some healing, solace and peace into our lives. We can each be the gift that can possibly help to heal thewound.”
For more information, please email Arline Kaplan at arkaplanphd@gmail.com or Leslie Wasserman at leshbr@aol.com.
