Adam F. Miller From Generation to Generation - the B’nai Mitzvah of Our Sons David Roher was the first student whose bar mitzvah I participated in as an ordained rabbi. The senior rabbi asked me to start the service, while he planned to take the main role. One of the smallest in his bar mitzvah class, I towered over David on the bimah. Seeing the nervous look in his eyes as he stood next to me, I leaned in and whispered, “Go easy on me, it’s my first bar mitzvah.” David laughed, and off we went. Eric Levy was my first bar mitzvah where I took the main role. Bright and passionate about his Jewish identity, Eric and I bonded over the experience. He went on to be president of the youth group when I was the advisor, and later made Aliyah, where I visited him during my last trip to Israel. Over the course of my 18 years in the rabbinate, I officiated at more than 500 b’nai mitzvah. I had the privilege to watch those young men and women ascend the bimah as children, and descend as young adults, eager to embrace their new title and place in the Jewish community. Some showed aptitude for reading Torah, others a gift for teaching and speaking, some demonstrated remarkable courage as they overcame obstacles. All left me feeling proud of their accomplishments. Yet, none of that prepared me for what will happen in just a few weeks’ time on November 6, as our oldest sons, Jonah and Gabriel, stand before this congregation to mark their b’nai mitzvah. When we first visited Naples for my interview, Jennifer and I asked ourselves if we could see our children reaching this milestone here. The answer was a resounding yes, and that response lead us to choose Temple Shalom. Now that the day is nearly here, it is hard to express all of the emotions that I feel in anticipation of this very personal lifecycle experience. This will definitely be more difficult than writing sermons for High Holy Days! While I may need some more time to work on what to say, there is no doubt in my mind that this lifecycle moment will be sweeter because we are able to share it with our community. One reason we delayed a year was to enable more of our community and family to attend in person. Jonah and Gabriel grew up in this congregation, arriving when they were only 2 ½ years old. From Temple Shalom Preschool through today, you have been part of their lives. We joyfully invite our Temple Family to join in the joy of this simcha with our family. Thank you to all who have already showered us with notes since the invitation went out. For those unable to attend in person, know that the service will be livestreamed on the Temple website and Facebook. According to one text, when God gave Torah to Israel, God asked for a guarantor. The Israelites offered their faithful ancestors, as well as the great prophets, yet neither was sufficient. Finally they offered their children, and their children’s children, that they would pass Torah from one generation to the next. Satisfied with that answer, God gave Torah to our people. Jennifer and I look forward to the moment when we pass Torah to Jonah and Gabriel. Adding them as the latest link in the sacred chain of our tradition. From Sinai until now. As a huge fan of musical theater, I’m thrilled to share that Ellen Katz, our fantastic and popular Broadway “edu-tainer,” will be joining us for a special Zoom program on October 27. She will teach and entertain us with the story of the musical, “Wicked,” discussing its evolution from page-to-stage. Wicked is the story of what happened in Oz before Dorothy arrived. Among sets and costumes that are wild beyond our imaginations, we meet Elphaba the “evil” Wicked Witch born with green skin and the beautiful Glinda the Good Witch. Both women form a beautiful friendship that is constantly tested by the politics of Oz. With a brilliant score by Stephen Schwartz, you will be spellbound by the songs of deceit, sorcery, lasting love and deep friendship. A Broadway experience not to be missed. Ellen combines music, photos, videos, quotes, lyrics and historical background into a PowerPoint presentation that educates attendees about the musical and its creators. Director of Lifelong Learning Rabbi Ariel Boxman A few years ago, I read a book by Dr. Ron Wolfson titled “Relational Judaism: Using the Power of Relationships to Transform the Jewish Community” and I still can’t seem to get it out of my head. In the book, Wolfson presents a new philosophy of Jewish engagement based on extensive field research (including observations within mega churches) and experience in the Jewish community. In Wolfson’s philosophy he identifies nine levels of relationships that strengthen individual Jewish identity and commitment to the Jewish world. The nine levels of relationship range from “bein adam l’atzmo” (a relationship with oneself ) to “bein adam l’makom” (a relationship with God). In accessing these nine levels of relationship, Wolfson argues that Jewish organizations can begin to form meaningful relationships with those in their Jewish community and become visionary and engaging places of worship and learning.

Ever since reading this book and meeting Dr. Wolfson last spring, I have been committed to not only speaking about Relational Judaism, but practicing Relational Judaism. Within the school walls we do a wonderful job fostering meaningful relationships among students and staff members. Relational Judaism makes its way into every activity and lesson we do, as we teach children the value of friendship, kindness and inclusiveness. However, this year my goal has been to expand our emphasis on relationship building to the parents and families of Temple Shalom Preschool. In an effort to strengthen the bonds among our school parents, we have implemented a few Yummy snacks new programs including a monthly Moms Night Out and weekend family playdates (offsite). We have also restarted monthly POTS (Parents of Temple Shalom) committee meetings in order to engage parents in the planning of school events and fundraisers. In the month of September, we also kicked off our Shabbat ShaPLAY series in which we invite all families to join us at Sea Gate Park on Shabbat morning for singing, dancing and delicious Shabbat treats. Finally, this month, we will be inviting young Jewish families to participate in our Shalom Yeladim program on Sunday mornings at Temple Shalom as we learn about the Jewish holidays, sing with Miss Jane, and socialize. As we engage with one another and increase relationships among preschool families, our Jewish community will be strengthened. Shabbat ShaPLAY

The High Holy Days were indeed sweet this year as we gathered in our Sanctuary, many for the first time in over a year. It was wonderful to be able to offer in-person High Holy Days services with safety precautions that were still welcoming and furthered our sense of community. The entire staff brainstormed and improvised to bring you a variety of holiday programs focused on togetherness and accessibility for all our members and guests to enjoy, wherever they were. The Shofar service was an example of the sort of innovation that made holiday rituals feel more accessible and available to those who preferred an outdoor environment. In the period leading up to the holidays, the staff and I repeatedly asked ourselves: What we have learned during the pandemic? How have we grown in our roles? What have we discovered about the ways we work and relate to each other and our members? What changes will we bring with us into the future? These questions will inform our work at Temple Shalom this year, as we reimagine what One Family means. We invite you to join us on this journey. You are our partners in making Temple Shalom and our world better in the year ahead in ways we could never have imagined previously. Get Connected: We all hope to resume more of our pre-COVID activities in the not-too-distant future. In the meantime, there are still opportunities to get involved in Sisterhood, the Men’s Club, the Tikkun Olam Council (Social Action Committee) and more. Be Inspired: Our Shabbat services are a welcoming mix of English and Hebrew, featuring beautiful music and the wisdom of Torah and tradition. Share the Learning: Invite a friend and join us online on Shabbat mornings for Torah Study or sign up for one of the many adult education classes we offer to learn about Jewish history, culture, text and more. Strengthen our community: Tell your friends and neighbors about Temple Shalom so that we can keep strengthening and invigorating our Congregation with new members. Pay it Forward: Support Temple Shalom this year by giving to Above & Beyond, our annual fundraiser, the Endowment or a fund of your choice. Your generosity ensures that finances are never an obstacle to those who seek to join our One Family and avail themselves of all we offer. Your gifts will help others have a sweet new year too. I look forward to seing everyone as our snowbirds return for the winter and we start to offer more in-person programming.

CONNECT WITH US Tikkun Olam Council in Action Tikkun Olam Council members, Susan and Tom Hager, Jim Sernovitz and Bob Lubin, participated in a Growing Climate Solutions and Habitat Collier collaboration project on September 10 in Naples. The project involved repotting 75 saplings that are destined to enhance the landscaping of future Habitat homes here in Collier County. Susan Hager reported that all the volunteers they met had a good, but very muddy, time helping with this worthwhile project. The Tikkun Olam Council is always working on ways to “repair the world.” Please contact Don Belmont at djbelmont@ gmail.com for more information on getting involved in one of their many projects.
Bereavement Group for Members of the Temple Shalom Community In the spirit of our tradition, which calls us to perform the mitzvah of Nihum Avelim (comforting mourners), Temple Shalom will be offering a Bereavement Support Group for people who are grieving for a loved one. The group, which will observe confidentiality of communication, will meet on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month from 9:30am to 11:00am. Group size is limited to twelve people. The facilitators, Arline Kaplan, Ph.D., and Leslie Wasserman, M.A., are members of Temple Shalom. Both Arline and Leslie, licensed in New York and Michigan respectively, have extensive experience with groups and with people experiencing grief and loss. “We are hopeful that sharing our stories with empathic, compassionate others will allow some healing, solace and peace into our lives. February 12, 2022 Event Chairs - Robin and Andy Mintz Introducing Our Honorees By Ann Varsano Each year, Temple Shalom recognizes extraordinary visionaries and leaders who build, strengthen, and contribute to the future of our Congregation. On February 12, 2022, Temple Shalom will be honoring three very special couples who have given generously of themselves in different ways. Mark your calendars now for “A Noteworthy Night,” featuring dueling pianos, and join us to celebrate Ed and Cheryl Alexander, Dr. Paula Brody and Merrill Hassenfeld, and Bebe and Steve Saks for their outstanding commitment to Temple Shalom! Ed and Cheryl Alexander “If you are retired, you gotta have something to do!” Lucky for us, Ed Alexander, a retired architect, found plenty to do, serving as a Trustee on our Board and as the chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee at Temple Shalom. The latter has become a very big job as of late, with all the renovations, security upgrades and issues related to the soon-to-be-built Federation building on the Temple Shalom campus. Humble and mild mannered, Ed is quick to share the credit with the members of his interior design committee, our Facilities Manager, Victor Lucas, and Executive Director, Deborah Fidel for much of his committee’s accomplishments. Serving others is second nature to Ed and Temple Shalom just seemed like the natural place for Ed to devote his significant talent and energy. Perhaps that derives from seeing his father serve as the president of the Men’s Club and of his Orthodox congregation in Brooklyn, New York, where Ed grew up. After attending college at the University of Kansas, Ed also went on to serve six years in the Kansas National Guard. Ed met his lovely wife, Cheryl, in Kansas as well. Ed and Cheryl have two married daughters, one a NICU nurse and the other, the senior buyer for Calvin Klein. While Cheryl professes to be quiet and shy, she is the woman behind the man! She makes it possible for her husband to spend countless hours at Temple, serving our community. Ed & Cheryl Alexander, we are lucky to have you! Dr. Paula Brody and Merrill Hassenfeld “Why not do it now?” Merrill said, as he and Paula were writing an estate plan that would include Temple Shalom. They decided it was more important to give the money now - when it is needed and could be enjoyed by everyone. “It was our joy to help beautify our worship and gathering spaces.” 10
Their generous gift provided for the ongoing renovations to the Saks Lobby, the Sanctuary, Social Hall, Memorial Wall and restrooms, as well as an Artist-in-Residence weekend at Temple. Both Paula and Merrill were raised with a tradition of philanthropy. Their parents and grandparents were active in the Jewish community in congregations, federations and day schools. Merrill has served on our Temple Board and various committees for many years. Merrill chaired the “Above and Beyond” campaign, and he is proud to have chaired the Rabbinic Search Committee that brought Rabbi Miller to our community. Today, Merrill is the Third Vice President of our congregation and represents Temple on the Federation Building Committee. They both chair our Endowment Committee. Merrill and Paula both feel their Jewish identity is central for them, and that Temple Shalom is a meaningful, and essential connection. In addition, their havurah gives them “a warm and wonderful feeling of belonging.” Merrill was an attorney in the Boston area for about 40 years. Paula, a clinical social worker with a doctorate in education, had a varied career in Boston, including over 20 years with the Union of Reform Judaism in outreach to interfaith couples and individuals choosing Judaism. Paula is a talented artist and teacher, specializing in mixed media, painting and collage. Her work can be found locally at Inspirations Gallery. She is the current president of the Naples Art District, a non-profit organization of over 80 local artists. Bebe and Stephen Saks Bebe and Steve Saks have only been in Naples for three years, but they have already made a tremendous impact here with their charitable giving to Temple Shalom! Bebe and Steve both worked hard all their lives, and they were blessed with success. They feel so lucky that at this stage in their lives, they can share their good fortune with organizations that help people in need and further those causes they care about. As a young man, Steve received his Doctor of Optometry degree. But before the ink was dry on his diploma, he was drafted into the army. The Korean War was being fought at that time, and he was stationed at an evacuation hospital, attending to the optometric needs of the soldiers. After his discharge from the army, Steve and Bebe and their two children, Carole and Larry, relocated to Coral Gables, FL. Steve became a pioneer in the full-service car wash business in Dade County. Bebe did all the bookkeeping for their growing company of car washes. Their blessings also include three wonderful grandchildren who also live in Naples - Jason, Scott and Rachel. By the end of this year, all three will have become B’nai Mitzvah at Temple Shalom. Bebe and Steve support Temple Shalom because they feel it is important to build and strengthen Jewish life for the next generation. They are thrilled that their support has helped underwrite the gleaming new kitchen and updated flooring throughout the offices and schools. With a very generous gift, they also endowed the Temple Shalom lobby which is now named for them. These three couples are exemplary role models for our entire community. Thanks to their enthusiastic and steadfast support of Temple Shalom, our spiritual home has added functionality, and a new look and feel that reflect our dynamic and forwardlooking congregation. We are thrilled to celebrate Ed, Cheryl, Merrill, Paula, Steve and Bebe with our entire One Family and say a heartfelt, “Todah Rabbah” (thank you)!

I srael C orner Mount Tabor By Andy Karpman
Mount Tabor is the site of a famous battle recorded in the book of Judges between the Israelite army under the leadership of Barak and the army of the Canaanite king of Hazor, Jabin, commanded by Sisera. References to Mount Tabor can be found in both Jewish and Christian texts. In the Old Testament, it is mentioned as the border of the tribes of Zebulun, Issachar and Naphtali, probably due to its height and therefore the strategic control it provides of the east-west route through the Jezreel Valley, and north-south route through the Galilee. Mount Tabor continued to have significance in the period of the Second Temple as the site of settlement and battles. For Christians, Mount Tabor is believed to be the place of the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ, where Jesus began to radiate light and conversed with Moses and Elijah. The result is that the site longago became a site of pilgrimage. Two churches – the Roman Catholic Church of the Transfiguration and nearby the Eastern Sanctuary of the Orthodox Church – sit atop Mount Tabor and draw pilgrims from around the world every year. In the past 100 years massive efforts have been undertaken to reforest Mount Tabor (much of the mountain was cut down during the Ottoman Period), and today it is covered in lush pine forest. An access road was built up the mountain, greatly improving accessibility (and replacing the need to climb about 4,500 steps which was necessary in the past.) It is the accessibility, combined with the beauty and flat surrounding plains, which make Mount Tabor one of the most popular locations in Israel for paragliding.

Ted and Nancy Koenig are recent Florida transplants, formerly of Highland Park, Illinois, a northern suburb of Chicago. They recently celebrated their 31st wedding anniversary and are parents to Michael (29), Stephanie (27), David (26) and Jonathan (21). Ted is President and CEO of Monroe Capital LLC, a private credit asset management firm. He also serves on numerous boards including Northwestern Medical Group Board of Directors; Northwestern Medical Healthcare Investment Committee; Dean’s Advisory Council, Kelley School of Business at Indiana University; Board of Advisors at Chicago-Kent College of Law; and Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Allendale School. Ted is an avid golfer, and along with Nancy, enjoys all watersports and traveling around the world.
Arthur Acker & Nicole Lehninger
Arthur and Nicole are both general dentists who practiced together in Venice, FL for 19 years. Nicole was born in Heidelberg, Germany and grew up in Munich. She came to the United States in 1994 to attend the University of South Florida, on a golf scholarship. Nicole has continued her love of golf and plays regularly with her parents and friends. She attended the University of Florida College of Dentistry, and graduated in 2002. She practiced with Arthur until 2021, when she and Arthur retired. Nicole loves her family time, enjoys traveling throughout the world, playing golf, and of course, being married to Arthur. Arthur was born in Brooklyn, NY. He grew up in NJ, where he attended Rutgers University in New Brunswick, and the College of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ. He served as a captain in the US Army Dental Corp for two years before moving to Gainesville, FL. He had a private practice near Gainesville for 18 years while teaching part time at the University of Florida. Arthur moved to Venice, FL where he practiced for 29 years, 19 of those years with Nicole. For 12 years he was the director of the UF Dental Implant Continuum. Arthur and Nicole retired together in 2021, moving to Naples to be closer to Nicole’s parents. Arthur loves sports and is an avid UF Gator fan. He loves reading and audio books, Broadway shows, museums, fishing, traveling, spending time with his family, and of course, being married to Nicole.

B’nai Mitzvah Madeline Goldberg October 2 Mimi Goldberg is in 8th grade at the Community School of Naples. Some of her favorite school activities are student government, Mathletics and Science Olympiad. Outside of school, she enjoys being part of musical theater productions, baking and spending time with friends. Mimi loves traveling, especially to hike, ski or see a Broadway show. She’s been going to Camp Harlam for six years and loves her summer camp family. Temple Shalom has always been part of Mimi’s life: first, dropping her big brother off at preschool, then going to Mommy & Me, graduating from preschool and attending religious school. Avery Goldberg October 16 Avery Goldberg is an eighth grader at the Community School of Naples. She loves dancing and has been competing since she was five years old. She just started cheer this fall and loves it. Avery enjoys hanging out with her family and friends during her free time. She is looking forward to becoming a Bat Mitzvah. Dylan Press October 30 With tons of excitement, we announce Dylan Harris Press’ Bar Mitzvah on October 30. Dylan will become part of the second generation from the Press family to become a Bar Mitzvah at Temple Shalom. Dylan enjoys spending time with his family and friends, listening to music, and going to Blue Star Camp in the summer.
Rachel Saks October 23 Rachel is a 7th grader at The Community School of Naples. She looks forward to her summers away at Camp Coleman and Camp Weequahic where she makes new friends and reconnects with her old friends. Rachel’s passions include dancing, theater, doodling, and reading. A favorite activity of hers is beating her Grandma Bebe at card games and Mah Jongg. Rachel loves her adorable rescue dog, Joey. Rachel is looking forward to continuing her Jewish learning and incorporating Jewish values in her life. Rachel is honored to be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah.

Dr. Palazzolo, a member of Temple Shalom, holds a PH.D. in counseling and psychology and has been a therapist for more than 35 years, with practices in New York, Arizona and Texas. MEN’S CLUB These monthly letters have to be submitted early in the previous month so, this one was written just after Rosh Hashanah. Not being sure what to include, I thought about how proud I have been to serve as Men’s Club President with what we have been able to accomplish during the past year. Among other initiatives, the Men’s Club Board has been totally committed to supporting the youth of our Congregation and those of the greater Naples Community. Our youth are the future of the Jewish people and it is natural, as well as critical, that they be nurtured and know their history and culture. As soon as there is greater clarity on how the pandemic is proceeding, we will begin to schedule more events. Fun facts: at the time of this writing, figures were released that estimated the world Jewish population at 15.2 million, approximately 0.2% of the total world population. Jews represent approximately 1.7% of the USA population. There have been approximately 900 Nobel Prizes awarded (in six categories) and over 20% have gone to Jews (33% of the American winners have been Jewish). Not bad for 0.2% of the population.

SISTERHOOD Welcome, new Sisterhood members. Our group looks forward to meeting you and getting to know you. We are thrilled that you will be a part of this group which supports the congregation, cultivates spiritual and personal growth and promotes Jewish values. We are planning programs for our members in accordance with Temple Shalom’s policies. Tuesday, October 26, we will have a docent-led tour of the current exhibit at the Baker Museum. Our tradition teaches that “Anyone who destroys a single life is considered to have destroyed an entire world; and anyone who saves a life is considered to have saved an entire world” (Talmud, Mishnah Sanhedrin 4:5). Some days my head spins thinking about all of the overwhelming issues our society currently faces: economic inequality, environmental crisis, sea level rise, racial justice issues, forest fires, hurricanes, covid, hunger, immigration and refugee issues, voting rights, human trafficking, reproductive rights, anti-Semitism, and on and on. Oy vey! How to deal with this? • Step one - follow the advice of the flight attendants – “Before helping others, put on your own oxygen mask first.” You can’t help others for very long if you don’t take care of yourself first. So, first things first - remember to take time for yourself. • Step two – How do you eat an elephant? Answer: One bite at a time! Take it in small steps, with individual discrete acts. A letter here, a phone call there, a random act of kindness now and then. One after another. String them together. There – we’ve made a difference in the world! This all brings to mind the Starfish Story. Early one morning, as the sun was rising in the sky, an old man went for a walk along a beach. As he walked, he noticed a young boy in the distance. He saw the boy pick something up from the sand and throw it into the sea. The boy walked a few steps and then picked something else up and tossed it into the sea. The old man was curious. He made his way over to the boy. “Can I ask what you are doing?” he said. “I’m throwing the starfish into the sea,” replied the boy. The old man looked puzzled, “Why would you do that?” he asked. “Because the tide is going out and the sun is coming up,” explained the boy. “Soon it will be too hot on the sand and the starfish will dry out.” The man threw his head back and laughed, “But the beach goes on for miles and miles. There are thousands of starfish stranded here. You will never be able to make a difference!” The boy gently picked up another starfish and threw it into the sea. As it splashed into the cool water, he turned to the man and said, “I made a difference to that one.” Every small act of kindness makes a difference. You might not be able to change the whole world in a day, but you can change the world for one person who you help.
