Look for the Bright Spaces By the time this reaches you, we will be into the New Year – and gathering ourselves to celebrate the holiday of Sukkot.

Knowing that we have a chance to shape the year ahead, I want to share with you again my final message heard on Rosh Hashanah: Where do we go from here? Mah Nishtanah Ha-Shanah ha-zot mikol ha shanim? What will make this year different than all other years?

One day, a professor gave his students a surprise exam, passing out the papers face down. Once he handed them all out, he asked the students to turn over the papers. To everyone’s surprise, there were no questions–just a black dot in the center of the paper. The professor, seeing the expression on everyone’s faces, told them the following: “I want you to write about what you see there.” The students, confused, got started on the task.

At the end of the class, the professor collected the exams and started reading each one of them out loud in front of all the students. Every answer, without exception, defined the black dot and described its position in the center of the sheet.

After he finished reading the exams, the professor looked up and addressed the students: “I’m not going to grade you on this.

Interestingly, no one wrote about the white part of the paper. Everyone focused on the black dot – and the same thing happens in our lives. We insist on focusing only on the black dot – the health issues that bother us, the lack of money, the complicated relationship with a family member, the disappointment with a friend. The dark spots are very small when compared to everything we have in our lives, but they are the ones that pollute our minds. Take your eyes away from the black dots in your lives. Enjoy each one of your blessings, each moment that life gives you. Be happy and live a life filled with love!”

Friends, may we all be blessed to spend our year looking at the bright white spaces, and not the black dots.

May we find inspiration knowing that we have joys to celebrate, and what we can accomplish working in collaboration together.

And may the shofar call us to return again next year to find the work of art that is our lives, a little more beautiful than the year before.

There’s no way around it, the past seven months have been heartbreaking for all of us. For me, one of the most difficult aspects of our current pandemic has been the lack of choral singing. Not only does singing together enable us to create beautiful music but it’s also provides the opportunity to connect with our fellow singers. Fortunately, we live in time where technology is able to bring us together and I’m so incredibly grateful to the choir members who took the time to help create the virtual choir video’s you heard during our High Holiday services. Each member had to record their vocal part separately, then send their video to an engineer who put it all together. Director of Lifelong Learing Rabbi Ariel Boxman

This month our Temple Shalom students will finally have the opportunity to return either physically or virtually to our youth engagement programs. We are so excited to greet them and resume the task of providing meaningful and engaging Jewish experiences. While we adapted our program to meet the needs of all those in our community due to Covid-19, we have also taken this opportunity to enhance and re-envision our educational programming. Instead of simply being a school where children come to learn about Judaism, going forward we intend to provide a program in which students are engaged meaningfully and experience Judaism with hands-on activities and community building exercises.

It is for this reason that we have decided to change the name of our program from Temple Shalom Religious School to YESh! (Youth Engagement @ Shalom). The Hebrew word Yesh is slang for “I did it!” or “I succeeded”. It is our #1 goal to instill pride in our students and aid them in developing a deep love and connection to Judaism and to the Jewish people.

Those students who are attending in person will have the opportunity to participate in electives and tribe challenges. Our 1st trimester of electives include Pinterest Judaica (crafting), Tikkun Olam (community service projects), Yoga & Meditation, and YESh! Olympics (ie. Hebrew relay races/games). In addition to the traditional Judaica curriculum, we have implemented these hands-on electives to increase the experiential element of our program and provide alternative methods of learning.

Additionally, we have decided to initiate each grade in our program into a tribe. Each tribe will have a weekly challenge to complete and throughout the course of the year participate in a variety of tribe competitions. By working towards a common goal, students will be forced to work as a team. In doing so, we hope a deeper sense of community will be built and friendships enhanced.

For those students attending virtually, we have increased the amount of musical programing and have added some very exciting technological elements. Since our virtual teachers do not need to physically live in Naples, we have been able to hire some fantastic and talented new teachers who we otherwise would not have the opportunity to engage with. All of our students are in for an exciting year and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to resume our youth programs.

May this be a year of growth, meaningful engagement and above all, a year of peace.

Hello!

Fall is upon us (even though it may not feel like it in South FL). It is time to thank everyone for all their amazing work that they did on the High Holy Days. High Holy Days 5781 were like nothing we have ever experienced. An enormous amount of work went into the planning and execution this year. It was wonderful to see all of the hard work come to fruition. Thank you again to our wonderful clergy and staff for all you did to make the holidays so meaningful to the Congregation.

Even though High Holy Days planning commanded a lot of attention and focus, many other projects continued at Temple simultaneously. Since I last wrote, the Board of Trustees passed the Strategic Pan. Thank you to Dave Rutstein and Howard Solot for steering that ship. Our Board is hard at work implementing the plan. One aspect of the plan that I would like to highlight is our new Leadership Development initiative, Temple Shalom Academy. This will be a series of workshops with Temple leaders for people who are interested in getting more involved or just want to know more about how Temple works. Stay tuned for more details.

The Finance Committee has been working all summer on a new budget for our congregation. They have worked very hard with our staff to cut expenses while maintaining our level of service. It is our goal to share an overview of the new budget with the congregation in the near future.

I know that the start to 5781 will bring continuing and new challenges as we struggle to find our footing against the backdrop of a pandemic. We will continue to face difficult choices and make hard decisions. But I am comforted by the strength of our community. If the High Holy Days taught us anything, it is that when the chips are down, our Temple family will muster our resources and creativity to face that which is difficult and painful and unite together to take care of one another.

COMMITTEE UPDATES Reopening Task Force Update Submitted by Dr. Allen Weiss

Last May, President Daryl Sissman and Rabbi Adam Miller asked a group of volunteers to provide guidance to the Temple Board on when and how-to re-start activities affected by the coronavirus. Other members included, Deborah Fidel, Susan Hager, Jason Korn, Merrill Hassenfeld, Scott Newman, Daniel Spintman, and convened by Allen Weiss. Rabbi Ariel Boxman, Canter Donna Azu, and Susan Feld contributed valuable expertise to our discussions. We met four times through the end of August and were available on short notice for unforeseen changes.

We recognized from the start that the Temple Shalom Board has the responsibility to decide how and when to safely reopen.

The role of the Re-opening Committee is to share data with and advise the Board on the decisions before them.

At each meeting we carefully examined the current data and environment with an emphasis on Southwest Florida.

We learned early on that conditions would change in unanticipated ways requiring Temple Shalom’s responses to be flexible.

A great deal of information was reviewed from multiple sources including Jewish organizations, other faith-based organizations, educational, community, and governmental agencies. Individuals contributed helpful points of view and other professionals were consulted.

Tracking the data, relying on CDC guidelines, and learning from others with expertise in healthcare, law, and insurance while utilizing other institutions’ best practices informed the recommendations. Every effort was made to ensure that Temple Shalom had access to the most recent information available to advise them on reopening activities.

The Committee is particularly proud and appreciative of the quick pivot that our Clergy, Staff and Board accomplished to effectively continue to serve, educate, and comfort the congregation during a time of a new and novel threat.

We will continue meeting monthly or more frequently, if the need arises. Our advice will continue to be based on what is safest for all while optimizing the ability to serve the congregation.

After eight months of work, the Temple’s Strategic Planning Group recently provided President Daryl Sissman and the Board of Trustees with a comprehensive set of recommendations for future action. Despite the uncertainty caused by Covid 19, the group suggested strategic initiatives for the Temple’s programs, events and operations taking into account expected changes in the external environment-- all designed to strengthen the role of the Temple in the community.

Among other initiatives, the Strategic Group recommended (1) conducting a 3-5 year analysis of projected needs for space, staff, clergy and technology; (2) creating more opportunities for connectivity among congregants with enhanced feedback and evaluations of the effectiveness of the Temple’s programs and events; (3) re-instituting the previously successful Mentoring Program and creating a new Leadership Training Program and Succession Plan; (4) expanding the existing “Talent Search” to invite new volunteers by learning about their skills, expertise and experience; (5) expanding opportunities for residents of Bonita Springs and Estero; (6) expanding creative educational curricula including distance learning and (7) nurturing new and ongoing opportunities for congregants to have face-to-face interactions with the clergy.

A LASTING TRIBUTE TO BILL AND ELINOR LOCKETZ

By Carole J. Greene At Rosh Hashanah, Rabbi Adam Miller announced a most significant gift to Temple Shalom from Bill and Elinor Locketz. Many of our more recent members have no idea who these beautiful people were or why they made such a generous gift.

Bill passed in December 2011 and Elinor in January 2017. But some of us old-timers who knew them will shed some light.

Murray and Pauline Hendel were their close friends. The four played bridge nearly every week, and went out to dinner afterward. Longhorn Steakhouse was a favorite.

Murray told me, “They were excellent bridge players. They played for money, and almost always won.”

I can attest to that. A bridge-buddy and I played against Bill and Elinor in the Hadassah Bridge Marathon—a prime event in the lives of local Jewish bridge players in the early 1990s. They were always fun to play with, even though we knew we probably would lose. They used their own bidding system, so my partner and I could never figure out what they were doing or what cards they held. Tough to defeat.

Bridge was only one favorite pastime. Another was golf.

Bill and Elinor played together nearly every day at The Vineyards Country Club, where they were the first family to join. Bobbie Katz told me, “Bill was so proud to have that first number at the club.” Their home, Bobbie said, was the first to be built in the Valley Oak neighborhood of The Vineyards, making it the first private home in the entire development.

She went on to say, “Both of them truly loved Temple Shalom. They were deeply involved in the Jewish community and in their Judaism.”

Rabbi James Perman noted that the Locketzes were part of the group who purchased the Temple’s fourth Torah scroll.

To prepare for the Jewish Food Fair—for many years the Temple’s prime fundraising project—Elinor and other

Sisterhood women cooked for weeks. Bill, a leader in the Men’s Club, ran the rummage sale that also brought in a lot of money. “He went around and picked up the merchandise, stored and displayed it, and organized the helpers. He believed it was important to actually do things, and not just talk about them,” Rabbi Perman said.

Gracia Kuller said that she and her husband Merrill met them in Naples in the late 1990s. “Both Bill and Elinor were lovely, lovely people,” she told me, “the most attunedto-each-other couple I’ve ever known. Bill adored her. They married young and had three children.”

Murray Hendel related, “As lovely as they were, they had tragic misfortunes with their children.” Son Irving and daughter Becky both died as young adults. Jeffrey, their third child, died last spring.

Neena Lurvey, a cousin to Bill, told me the two were a couple “joined at the hip.” Neena looked after them in their declining years and was granted the discretion to distribute the funds Bill and Elinor established in the Jeffrey Locketz Special Needs Trust. After Jeffrey’s recent death, Neena approached her cousins’ longtime friends for suggestions on how to use the money as a fitting tribute to the Locketzes. The distribution came to Temple Shalom to be used for the bimah.

When the current facility was a mere gleam in the eye of Temple members, various items in its construction were designated with an amount for generous donors to consider.

For a gift of $500,000, donors would have the honor of naming the bimah. Although our sanctuary was dedicated in 1991, no one stepped forward to claim that honor—until now. The bimah will be refurbished with new lecterns and other amenities going forward, all because of Bill and Elinor’s generous souls and their love of Temple Shalom.

Bereavement Group for Members of the Temple Shalom Community In the spirit of our tradition, which calls us to perform the mitzvah of Nihum Avelim (comforting mourners), Temple Shalom will be offering a Bereavement Support Group for people who are grieving for a loved one. The group, which will observe confidentiality of communication, will meet on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month from 9:30am to 11:00am.

Group size is limited to twelve people. The facilitators, Arline Kaplan, Ph.D., and Leslie Wasserman, M.A., are members of Temple Shalom. Both Arline and Leslie, licensed in New York and Michigan respectively, have extensive experience with groups and with people experiencing grief and loss. “We are hopeful that sharing our stories with empathic, compassionate others will allow some healing, solace and peace into our lives. We can each be the gift that can possibly help to heal the wound.”

CONNECT WITH US EXPERTS DISCUSS HUMAN RIGHTS ISSUES AFTER “MOVIES THAT MATTER”

By Carole J. Greene Because we could not be certain movie theaters would be allowed to reopen in time for this year’s “Movies That Matter” screenings, we set up the films to stream into your homes.

Have you ever hurried past a homeless person huddled for sleep on a sidewalk and wondered what brought that person to this extreme deprivation? Even here in genteel, wealthy Greater Naples, hundreds of people have no home but live in cars, tents, shelters, or sofa-surf in the homes of family or friends. How does this happen? Would it surprise you to learn that many, if not most, homeless persons suffer from mental illness? Or that the local jail houses more people with mental illness than medical centers do?

Why do we trust you’ll want to do this? Each film shines a spotlight on a human rights issue: water scarcity; treatment of the mentally ill; domestic violence. We have gathered local experts to talk about each topic as it affects us here, where we live. The dates below are for the discussions; you will view each movie prior to hearing the experts.

Discussion panelists, at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21, are: The filmmaker Dr. Ken Rosenberg, a Peabody Award-winning producer and director of six films for HBO and three films for PBS on mental health issues; Nancy Dauphinais - Chief Clinical Officer of the David Lawrence Center; and Pam Baker - CEO of NAMI Collier County.

We are reminded daily of our duty to perform public health safety actions during the Coronavirus pandemic. Uppermost is to wash our hands with soap and water. Frequently. For 20 seconds or more each time.

Not all the victims of the current pandemic have caught the virus. Some have suffered from domestic violence stemming from frustrations, anger and isolation caused by the lockdown. Such violence, so often hidden in the shadows, has escalated because of these uncommon restrictions.

What if we did not have running water in our home? What if our next-door neighbor didn’t either? How about the entire village?

We take plentiful running water for granted. We turn the spigot and it pours out. The time has come to raise our awareness of water scarcity in parts of the world. Could it happen here, where we get an average of 56 inches of rain every year? Quick answer: yes.

Sustainable Nation, a one-hour documentary, follows three individuals working to bring water resources to an increasingly thirsty planet. Discussion panelists are: Dr. William Mitsch - Director, Everglades Wetland Research Park Eminent Scholar, College of Art and Sciences, and Sproul Chair for SWFL Habitat Restoration, FGCU; and Dr. Abe Levy - Retired Internal Medicine Physician executive and Southwest Florida Environmental and Social Justice Activist.

Discussion is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14, via Zoom.

Our second film, the feature-length documentary Bedlam, takes us into the national crisis surrounding care of the severely mentally ill through intimate stories of patients, families, and medical providers.

Analysis of our final documentary, Telling Amy’s Story, will be presented at 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 28. Men’s Club President Ron Yasbin

I thought for this month’s issue of “The Voice” I would share with all of you a letter that the Men’s Club received from Rabbi Boxman. The letter, as included below speaks to the commitment of the Men’s Club to the needs of our students. This commitment is just one of the many activities in which we are involved.

As we begin this new year, I want to take some time to address an issue that I have heard many times. Basically, the question gets raised as to why someone should join and support the Temple Shalom Men’s Club when they are members of the Men’s Cultural Alliance? For me, I am proud to be a member of both organizations. These organizations are not antagonistic to each other, rather, they are really synergistic. Where as the MCA provides cultural, educational, social and athletic activities, the Men’s Club is really dedicated to supporting the health and welfare of the Temple, the congregation, the Religious School and Preschool, as well as the greater Jewish community here in SW Florida and abroad.

Yes, we sometimes run similar activities, but competition between the two organizations really doesn’t exist. Thus, I urge the male members of the congregation to consider becoming active members of both organizations.

I am calling on members of the Men’s Club to step up and provide ideas for how we can increase our commitments and services. It is also critical for our members to become more actively involved in serving on the Board as well as organizing events. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with your ideas and/or willingness to serve.

Hopefully, we will emerge from the pandemic in the not too distant future. In the meantime, enjoy Sukkot, Shmini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah.

Letter from Rabbi Ariel Boxman, Director of Lifelong Learning: Hi Ron! Our new tables and chairs have arrived and they are absolutely perfect! Our kids and teachers are loving them. The students made a thank you card for Men’s Club and I am going to leave it in the main office by the mail boxes. It is too large to mail. I have attached a photo of it here so that you can see what it looks like (and pass along via email if you like). Thank you a million times over for your generosity. Men’s Club has once again saved the day and brought joy to our school. Please pass along our gratitude to all the members and let them know how thankful we are to have their support.

Sisterhood President

Karen Cohn I hope everyone had a Happy and Healthy New Year. Being on Zoom for services was very different. It made me reflect why being at Temple in person makes a big difference. I am sure you felt the same way and would have preferred the camaraderie of being in the Sanctuary with everyone.

Instead of saying “Next year in Jerusalem” it should be “Next year in Temple Shalom!”

Sisterhood had its first virtual program with Judy Belmont as speaker. She was terrific. The topic was “Managing Stress and Not Carrying It in Times of COVID-19”. We had 37 Sisterhood members attending.

The next event is a joint program with Hadassah. The League of Women Voters will be talking about the six Amendments in the next election. Voting is a right we as women should not take for granted. This program will be a non-partisan, informational talk. When you are filling out your mail-in ballot or voting in person at the voting booth, your choices should be between you and G-d and no one else.

The next Sisterhood program will be in November and the programming committee is working on it now. Please make sure you read all the emails for the announcements. Just a reminder - for these Zoom meetings we can only accept Temple Shalom members who are also Sisterhood members.

I look forward to getting back in to the Temple soon for our luncheons.

Tikkun Olam Council Chair Ken Goldstein Mitzvah Madness The pandemic of 2020 has changed our plans for an annual Mitzvah Day. What hasn’t changed is not only our ability, but our commandment to do mitzvot. With that in mind, we have decided to change our approach for this year.

Mitzvah Day 2021 is now “Mitzvah Madness.” Activities will take place throughout the year. You have the ability to choose an activity or an organization that connects with your interests and your time frame.

• Since a single “Mitzvah Day” may not happen this year, our major concentration will be on collections that can be made primarily somewhere other than the Temple building, and/or possibly volunteering with organizations that can use a few extra hands at their facilities while social distancing (Meals of Hope, Harry Chapin, etc.).

• While we may not have a single “Mitzvah Day” we can have “Mitzvah Madness” by concentrating on one or two mitzvot each month. Here is a list of organizations and projects that we will be supporting, with more information about each one below: • Children’s Network of Southwest Florida • Laces of Love • Socks and undies for Grace Place • Knitzvah shawls for breast cancer patients • Toiletry Packets for Collier County school children • “Bedtime Bundles” for The Naples Shelter For Abused Women And Children • Bikes forTykes • Beading for Betterment for Guadalupe Center • Meals of Hope • Harry Chapin Food Bank • Champions for Learning

Champions of Learning in Collier County is designed “To create life-changing learning experiences for every student.” There are a number of volunteer roles to compliment your interests and schedule.

We can’t pack 50,000 Meals of Hope at the Temple this year but there are many other options to pack meals in a safe environment.

The Knitzvah Project is an all-year endeavor to knit shawls for women recovering from breast surgery.
