Talk to Strangers

When children are young, we begin the indoctrination – “Don’t talk to strangers.” We say this with the best of intentions – to protect our children.

The assumption is that all strangers pose a danger by default. We want to protect our children and shield them from the world.

As adults, that message has a different impact. It causes us to fear all those who are not already part of our social circle – with the assumption that strangers pose some level of threat to our lives.

The result – we tend to ignore people we don’t know. Our mode of operation is to walk past individuals on the street or in businesses without even a cursory, “Hello,” “How are things?” or comment about the weather. That lack of communication keeps us from learning new stories, hearing new perspectives, and strengthening our feelings of community.

Just last month, I experienced the positive reward of talking with a stranger. After attending a conference in Chicago, I found myself standing in an extraordinarily long line for check-in at the airport caused by a large storm. Having spent the week learning, there was a part of me that wanted to just put on my headphones – the universal symbol for please don’t talk to me. Instead, I reacted to a particularly brilliant flash of lightening by commenting to the gentleman in front of me on the power of the storm. He smiled back, and we began a conversation that continued past check-in, all the way to the security area, where we took two different tracks.

should appear behind me in line – the same gentleman. And so our dialogue continued through dinner, and now over email.

He expressed a curiosity in Judaism, while I learned from him about his Hindu traditions and background. Over the course of our discussion, he recommended a series of online discussions that have given me a new perspective on the evolution of nations.

A stranger is only someone whose story we do not yet know, and with whom we have no relationship. This new year, make the effort to learn the stories of those around you. Be they neighbors, fellow congregants, or even just a person in line with you at Starbucks. You never know what stories you might hear, what connections you will establish, and how that person might bring blessing to your experience in life.

May the year ahead be for new relationships, and a stronger sense of community around us.

I remember as a young girl attending High Holy Day services. I would listen to our cantor and hear the passion in his voice. For me, one of the most powerful prayers of the season was Hineni, “Here I am.” It’s an outpouring of hopes written by an anonymous medieval cantor. That prayer is one the first texts I sing on Erev Rosh Hashanah. Hineni is traditionally sung not with, or to, but for the congregation by the cantor serving as the shaliach tzibbur (messenger of the congregation) on the community’s behalf. “Here I am, poor in good deeds, fearful and trembling…I stand here to plead for Your people Israel who have asked me to represent them, even though I am not worthy or prepared...Don’t hold them responsible for what I’ve done…”

We once again hear the word Hineni echoed in the Torah portion chanted on Rosh Hashanah morning. We hear “hineni” three times in the Abraham-Isaac Akedah story alone.

First Abraham responds “hineni” to God when God asks Abraham to take his son, his only son Isaac whom he loves, up the mountain and make an offering of him. Abraham then says “hineni” to Isaac, when the young man asks his father where the sheep is for the offering. And finally, Abraham again says “hineni” when the Angel stops his hands by calling his name twice, as he stood with the knife hovering ready to slaughter his son, Isaac.

For me, the hardest word to utter in that prayer is its first one: Hineni. Here I am. Who can say that today? Am I

really here? Present? Ready to serve? The drama of the moment is immense. I still remember my first time singing Hineni as your cantor. It opened my heart wide open. It connected me for a brief moment to everything, to the core of what it means to be alive, to terror, to joy.

There are so many distractions which keep us from being fully present in modern life. We are pulled by incessant screens all around us, by stress and anxiety, by work commitments, and by sheer overload. Our to-do lists drive our every waking moment. We are ruled by traffic patterns and grocery shopping; the endless minutia of daily and weekly tasks. We are pulled away from those whose voices we need to hear, away from those who love us and need our attention. Much like the exchange between Abraham and Isaac at that point, there is much silence; sometimes we can be present for others without many words spoken. And sometimes, we are so absorbed in what we’re doing, so deep into our own commitments, that we need to be shaken awake before we can answer, “hineni”.

When you hear Hineni this year, let the words and music seep into you. Give over the trust and faith to your chosen messenger. Be fully present for the transformational moment.

And then, for the rest of the year, may you be fully present to those around you, ready to answer,”hineni”.

As the High Holy Days approach, many things go through my mind. As President, it can be overwhelming to give a speech that will resonate with the congregation. I am excited to stand before you, but nervous at the same time. It is hard to believe that I have been here for 18 years and I never thought I would be standing before you representing the Board of Trustees.

As I look back there are special memories of the High Holy Days. Of course, most of it revolves around cooking and family. When I was little, my mother would make sure I had a new dress for Temple. We would pick up my grandmother and take her with us and would have friends and family over for break the fast. Years later when I married my husband, Barry, we would fly back to St. Louis for services and help prepare a huge feast for 50-75 people who would come to his parents’ home.

Today my boys are grown and do not come down for the holidays, but Barry and I still have honey cake bake offs to see who made the best honey cake and he makes wonderful challah. We have friends over who do not have family with them to celebrate. Many of us are here without family and it is important to reach out. This year invite those who do not have a place to go. Let the temple office know that you have extra seats at your table. It is what our Temple family is all about.

This year as President, I also understand that I have a lot of responsibility to our congregation. The Board has a fiduciary responsibility to ensure that we are fiscally sound by balancing the budget. We do that through our yearly commitment, fundraising and Above and Beyond. Our Endowment program is here to provide for our future “For Now and Forever.” Consider this year a time to give to Temple Shalom, whether it be a gift of time by volunteering or a monetary gift. Together we can make a difference.

Explore the profound record of first-person accounts in diaries and memoirs uncovered in the years since the Holocaust.

With the High Holy Days upon us, there’s a lot of introspection and self-examination that occurs. We think about the people we have wronged, the choices we made that we weren’t so proud of, and how we

want to do better. All of that is extremely important and is such a beautifully inspiring thing to do – and I highly encourage everyone to give it a real effort if you haven’t yet. At the same time, I want to offer a different perspective.

As a teacher, language is one of the single most powerful tools we have.

A single word can make or break someone’s attitude, perception of self, and effort. Something carelessly said in a moment of anger, frustration, or even distraction can make such an impact. In each interaction we have, we strive to use our language for good. With our rules and guidelines, we spend significant time on rephrasing things in the positive. It’s super easy to know what you shouldn’t do – no running, no hitting, no hurting others. But it’s not always easy to know what you should do – respect others, do your best, include everyone.

This year, as we engage in self-reflection and think about the not so great things we’ve done and choices we’ve made, as we ask forgiveness for those things we’ve done and things we don’t even realize we’ve done, I’d urge us all to consider the positive as well. Think about the small things you’ve done that make such a positive impact – think about the kind words, the friendly smile, the person you introduced yourself to. Let’s acknowledge and work to repair the less than great, but also acknowledge and work to include more of the positive and empowering things we have done this past year. Think about how you can make a powerfully positive impact this year, in big ways but also in those small, every day ways. Use your language, and your actions, to enrich your life and the lives of each person you encounter.

We have had our first full month of school and so much has already happened. We have added additional staff to meet the needs of our growing enrollment and they fit perfectly into our TSP family.

With the ever increasing expectations in elementary school, our amazing enrichments and superb curriculum enables our graduates to enter Kindergarten fully prepared. These are the very reasons Temple Shalom Preschool maintains its status as having the most unsurpassed preschool program in the Naples area. Our unique program and outstanding staff are able to bring out the best in each of our students, raising self-esteem, confidence, and providing a firm foundation for the school years that lay ahead.

Of the many ideals we impart on our students and their families, one of the most important is Mitzvot. We all know of the horrible flooding in Louisiana. Because of this, TSP has reached out and partnered with Beth Shalom Synagogue in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Thankfully, the preschool and synagogue were not physically devastated and serves as a haven to the teachers and families of the Alfred G. Rayner Learning Center who were hit especially hard, some of them losing everything. Our TSP families have bonded together in this time of need and we are reaching out to friends and families for donations of Walmart and Target gift cards. With these they will be able to buy food, clothing, and personal care items to help get them through this difficult time. In addition, they are accepting monetary donations on their website: BethShalomSynagogue.org (look for the Flood Relief Fund). If you would like to be included in sending them gift cards, please contact Preschool Director Seyla Cohen at 239-455-3227.

We held our Preschool Super Shabbat celebrating Rosh Hashanah where our Preschool families joined our students, Rabbi Miller, Cantor Azu, and Miss Jane to sing special holiday songs and celebrate Shabbat. As we do every month, the children baked mini challahs to take home and share with their families. This month, they made round challahs to commemorate Rosh Hashanah.

One Family....Many Stories “I felt the hand of God.” - A High Holy Days Story

Last year, during a training session for volunteers willing to initiate 30 minute one-to-one conversations with other Temple members, Gene Helfand was asked to tell his story. Everyone sitting around that table heard something that they will never forget. As we are about to begin the new year of 5777, we hope this very personal and powerful story will resonate with you.

Gene is about to celebrate his 84th birthday. He was raised in an orthodox family in Chicago. Like many young adults with a similar background, he abandoned Judaism as well as all religion.

While in high school, the Navy had a new summer program where students could do “boot camp” before their senior year. As part of this program, after graduation they would enter the Navy agreeing to do two years of active service and then two years as a reserve. That’s what Gene did. Little did he know that he would begin his Navy career just before the start of the Korean War.

He was assigned to a vessel as part of the 6th fleet in the Mediterranean. His travels took him to just about every country in that area. One day, while on liberty in a small city in France he was walking down a street when he heard a familiar melody.

It was Kol Nidre. He followed that sound to the synagogue

where he took a talit and joined the service. His words to our small group were unforgettable. He said, “I felt the hand of God.”

I am so excited about the wonderful lineup of events Sisterhood has planned for this season!

On November 8, Max Rabinovitsj will be the guest speaker at our Sisterhood luncheon. Max has been the Director of the Naples Orchestra and Chorus since 2014. A prolific teacher as well as a violin soloist, orchestral and chamber musician and conductor, he was born in pre-war Belgium and attended the Royal Brussels Conservatory of Music, and is a graduate of The Curtis Institute of Music. He has performed at Lincoln Center with Isaac Stern and has conducted artists including Rostropovich, Jaime Laredo and Gil Shaham.

On December 13, we will meet at the Naples Botanical Garden for lunch and a tour.

At our January 10 luncheon at Temple, we will hear about the Naples Equestrian Challenge.

On February 21, we will enjoy “C’est La Vie . . . an afternoon in France” at the Naples Hilton. Our special guest speaker will be Helene Gaillet de Neergard, whose World War II memoir of life as a Catholic Girl in France is a fascinating read. Tina Haut and Debbe (Faunce) Schertzer are co-chairs of this signature event, and are planning every detail to make sure we have a thoroughly French experience.

For our March luncheon, New York Times best selling author B. A. Shapiro (The Muralist, The Art Forger) will be our guest speaker.

In April, we will have our annual Installation Luncheon and I will pass my gavel on to the next Sisterhood president.

I hope you can join us for some or all of these wonderful events. I think our Board has done a wonderful job putting this lineup together, and I thank them and all who work so hard to make Sisterhood such a success.

Did you know that in November, we will celebrate the Temple’s 25th year in our current building? Anniversary celebrations would not be complete without a fabulous Oneg! Please contact Sandy Stone if you want to be part of the celebration by baking for the Oneg. Thank you!

Men’s Club News

We’ve had a wonderful Men’s Club summer! The baseball outing at the Miracle game in Fort Myers was a real success! We are definitely planning to repeat this event next summer.

As of this writing, you should have received our annual Men’s Club dues statement. Please take time to renew your Men’s Club membership, or if you are not currently a member, please join us; we’re counting on YOUR support!

As in the past, your Men’s Club will continue to support financially, and with Man Power, many of the Temple’s functions and projects. We will also continue to support our local Jewish community and the State of Israel. Over the past two years the Men’s Club has contributed over $40,000 in support of many worthwhile Temple and community causes.

Although the Men’s club has a wide variety of activities and events throughout the year, only one of them is a fundraiser.

The Men’s Club’s sole source of income is the money we raise from dues and the annual Dinner Theatre Fundraising Event. So please join us and become a member. By doing so you will enable us to continue the support that we provide for the Temple and the Community.

Hetty, a retired Pediatrician, loves to play the piano and volunteers regularly as an advocate for abused women and children. Scott is currently working as the CEO of Morgan and Morgan. The couple has two adult children. Their son Michael just graduated high school. He likes to play the guitar, loves jazz music and ALL Apple products! Maya, their daughter, lives in Washington DC and is currently working with the URJ/RAC as a congressional liaison.

Carol, a retired Office Manager, is originally from Poughkeepsie, New York and Gene, a retired Orthodontist, from Youngstown, Ohio raised their family in Toledo, Ohio. Judaism is spiritual. Judaism is practical. So much of Jewish tradition deals with daily life and therefore with the economics of daily life. In fact, more than 100 of the 613 Commandments in the Torah deal with economic issues.

Like Judaism itself, the subject of endowments is both spiritual and practical. Endowments are about leaving a lasting and meaningful Jewish legacy that reflects your values and priorities, while helping to ensure a Jewish future. Endowments are also about investing today to help finance day-to-day life tomorrow.

On the occasion of the High Holy Days, I want to share with you once more the goals of our revitalized Endowment and Planned Giving Program.

Our purpose is to provide long-range stability for our Temple while generating income to assist in meeting future needs and opportunities, including new programs and positions. Endowment funds offer an enduring source of revenue generation that will grow and enable us to thoughtfully and strategically manage our current and future needs.

There are many ways for each of us to make a meaningful contribution to this important effort. There are numerous ways to make a current gift. For those who choose to state their intent now to make a gift to be given in the future, or want to supplement a current gift, we have created the Legacy Society to honor your intent. As you read this, you will have received in the mail, a Letter of Intent to make a planned gift to Temple Shalom. As the Letter of Intent states, by letting us know that you are helping to secure the future of the Temple in your Will or other estate planning documents, you may have the satisfaction of encouraging others to make their own gifts. And if your circumstances change, you may change your mind, as the letter of intent is not binding, not a legal obligation. Please take time to read our new booklet, For Now and Forever, which describes all of our giving opportunities, and will be available for you to take as you leave services.

Contributions to Temple Shalom funds are wonderful ways to show your appreciation of family and friends, to celebrate happy occasions and to honor the memories of loved ones. We suggest a minimum donation of chai ($18.00). With a minimum donation of chai, a notice of your gift will be sent to the honoree and mention will be published monthly in The Voice.

Operations

General Fund: Donations used for operating expenses.

Tree of Life: Each ‘Rock’ and ‘Star of David’ is a donation of $540.00; each ‘Leaf ’ is $240.00. The contribution must be received in its entirety before engraving is ordered.

Prayerbook Fund: Purchase of prayerbooks and Torah commentaries. To dedicate: Prayerbooks - $50 Torah commentary - $100 High Holy Day prayerbooks - $108 - each set

Religious School

Religious School Fund: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for Jewish learning in both Sunday and Hebrew Schools.

Scholar In Residence Endowment Fund: Supports the endowment established by Shirley and Henry Kraus. This fund enables Temple Shalom to bring visiting scholars to the Temple as an educational benefit to the membership.

Religious School Enrichment Fund: Donations augment the Religious School budget to enrich the education of our children.

The Low Family Endowment Fund: To secure the future of Temple Shalom and Reform Judaism in Southwest Florida.

Polster Religious School Scholarship Fund: To supplement Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

The Herbert & Ruth Abramson Fund: To supplement the general operating fund and to provide enrichment for Temple functions.

Ben Calmenson Fund: Donations will be used to create sponsorships to send children to attend Camp Coleman.

The Janet & Howard Solot Endowment Fund: For general charitable uses and purposes.

Endowment Fund: Donations help to secure the future, enrich the programs and provide for emergency needs of the congregation.

Rabbi Abraham Shusterman Children's Center Memorial Fund: To support our Religious School and Preschool.

Clergy/Leadership

Memorial Fund: Donations made in honor of a loved one who has passed.

Joseph S. Weinfeld Faculty Development Fund: Donations support both curriculum and teaching skill enrichment activities for Sunday and Hebrew School teachers.

Cantor Azu's Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes and general enhancement of the Cantor's work.

William Freschel Kiddush Fund: All donations help provide Kiddush Lunch each Saturday following worship services.

A $150 donation is considered to be a sponsorship to honor a special someone or occasion.

Youth Activities Fund: Donations provide financial support for children of our congregation to attend Camp Coleman, to take part in regional/national youth conventions, and to experience a summer in Israel.

Capital Reserve: Maintain and enhance buildings and grounds.

Worship

Flower Fund: Provides Bimah flowers each Shabbat. A $100.00 donation is considered to be a sponsorship in memory or in honor of a special someone or occasion.

Mitzvah Baskets Fund: A $100.00 donation will purchase several hundred dollars of food for JFCS. Dr. Philip & Shirley Gilbert Music Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement of music at Temple Shalom.

Preschool

Preschool Fund: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for the Preschool.

Preschool Enrichment Fund: The enhancement of curriculum, educational programs and experiences.

Arby Lipman Children's Library: For the purchase of children and adolescent books and magazine subscriptions, and supplies.

Jack and Charlotte Ward Family Children's Music Shelf: Audio and video music for children.

Rabbi Miller’s Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes,and general enhancement of the Rabbi's work.

Leadership Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement and enrichment of leadership programs at Temple Shalom.

Social Action
