The Waze to a Better Tomorrow

(excerpted from Rabbi Miller’s Yom Kippur Sermon) In 2006, Ehud Shabtai, a software engineer, began working on a project entitled, “FreeMap Israel.” This endeavor set the groundwork for the GPS navigation app Waze, which quickly became a phenomenon in Israel, and thirteen other countries. As of June 2013, there were more than 50 million Waze users. Google purchased Waze for over $1 billion.

Today Waze is the only thing that all Israelis agree on - every bus driver, taxi driver, and Israeli uses Waze to navigate.

Waze stands apart from other GPS based navigation systems because of its reliance on Rabbi community information. The app collects users’ driving times, real-time traffic updates, and user provided data. “Wazers”, as they are called, can report anything from slow traffic and Adam Miller weather to road hazards and police presence. Those real-time reports create a social-network for driving where Wazers avoid high traffic streets, and drive more safely through hazardous conditions.

As a result, Waze requires a critical mass of users in order to function at the highest level. The more Wazers on the road, the more information that can be provided. Conversely, in areas where few have adopted the software, one will not benefit as much from the social-network elements of Waze.

The same is true of a congregation. We are the “Jewzers” - the more people with whom we share the Jewish experience, the more meaningful it becomes for us. One gains more by being part of a congregation, marking meaningful life moments within a communal setting, finding support in times of difficulty, and working together with others to reach new spiritual destinations.

What destinations do we want our congregation to reach? That will be determined by the members of our Temple Family. This summer we launched a new initiative - One Family: Many Stories. Led by Tussy Shnider, Ken Goldstein and Bobbie Katz, this group seeks to learn the personal narratives of Temple Shalom members. Knowing one another’s stories, we can discover what inspires our Temple Family. We want to know the answer the questions, “What motivates you to wake up in the morning? What keeps you up at night?”

The answers to those questions give insight into the direction of our community. Once areas of interest develop, those coordinates will be programmed into our community “Waze”-like apparatus to find the optimal path moving forward. Communication through traditional sources, such as the Voice and weekly e-mails, as well as social media and our new iTemple platform, enable us to connect with one another on the issues that we care about.

Join in with your fellow Jewzers at Temple Shalom. Volunteer to share your narrative as part of One Family: Many Stories so that we can learn what moves you and the passions that drive our Temple Family. Login and connect through iTemple – find those who share your interests, develop new relationships, and strengthen your sense of home at Temple Shalom. We now have the tools to move our community forward, while making our world a better place.

The shofar sounded the start of 5776. May we see the world and the challenges we face with open eyes. May we move urgently in our work, repairing the world one deed at a time. And may the path that we choose this year – as individuals working together in community – provide us Mazel Tov to with blessing, hope, and the Waze for a better tomorrow.

As I write this month’s voice I’m am still processing the soul changing and uplifting services over these Yamim Noramim with our new Machzor, Mishkan HaNefesh. Yom Kippur with my Temple Shalom family left me feeling connected and grounded. I feel blessed to be able to look out upon our holy congregation and be filled with light and inspiration from the most amazing congregants and incredibly grateful to have my parents join me and Steve again this year.

Thank you to the many wonderful people who make this place a home, bringing their warmth and dedication. To my beautiful choir, who spends weeks rehearsing and preparing for these High Holy days and the amazing Peter Lewis, our music director for filling our souls Cantor with inspiring music and Jessie Goebel, for sharing your musical gifts and uplifting our Kol Donna Azu Nidre service year after year! Thank you to our Gabbai’s, and talented Torah and Haftarah chanters who take the time to prepare themselves so beautifully. There are so many others behind the scenes that need to be thanked as well. Our incredible maintenance staff who have worked so hard to get our congregation ready for these holidays and who are always there to help us in a pinch as well as the office staff for helping to make everything run seamlessly.

I look forward to all the wonderful things 5776 will bring to our Temple Shalom family and I look forward to sharing with you in all the great things that the year ahead brings!

Welcome Alicia Browner (Kelley) to our staff at Temple Shalom. Alicia was a Board of Trustee of the Temple for several years and has been an active participant in the Temple, religious school and in the One Family Initiative. Alicia will be working part-time and will continue with the progress of Relational Judaism. She has come onboard to help in the connectivity and engagement of current members and to work with prospective members to help them understand the value and benefits of the Temple Family. She will be working to connect members with others in reference to their interests and needs and will be a valuable contributor to the membership committee and the One Family.

Alicia will also be working with the endowment and fundraising teams. This is a perfect fit for the Temple and Alicia since her knowledge is gathered from her own involvement and working in many areas of the Temple. We are expecting a busy and rewarding upcoming season with the addition of Dr. Anna Salomon and Alicia.

Dylan is really good at video games editing, he likes to talk to people and being silly and goofing around and discovering new facts around the world.

Dylan loves electronic music and calm music and singing in the Collier County Honors Chorus. He can play the piano.

Dylan also enjoys hanging out with his cat Coco and has the most fun when traveling and vacationing with family and friends.

He likes family time and loves to go to camp coleman.

Dylan enjoys being Jewish!

Mica Saad on becoming a Bat Mitzvah October 17, 2015

Mica is an amazing writer and has received the Barbara Bush Foundation for Literacy Award twice already. She represented her school in the 2015 Collier County spelling bee and enjoys reading a lot. She likes to spend most of her weekend time with her friends. She is perfectly bilingual and is an avid traveler with her domestic and international family members & friends.

Mica loves acting and has participated in several shows in Naples, she is a member of the school chorus and plays the piano.

She is very proud of her Jewish heritage.

“Why we give to Above & Beyond” By: Bobbie & Gene Katz Our passage we wrote in “Our Torah” was called “Open Wide Your Hand to Your Brother,” which is one of the reasons we give to Above and Beyond.

We feel by supporting Temple Shalom in this financial endeavor, we are living according to our Jewish values and supporting our traditions of educating our children and making sure our Jewish heritage is carried on to the next generation.

Temple Shalom has been an important part of our lives since moving to Naples and the relationships we have made will be with us forever. Temple Shalom is our “family” and by giving to Above and Beyond we will be helping the financial wellbeing of our congregation.

In Pirkei Avot (2:7) it says “The more schooling, the more wisdom.” This is just one small illustration of the value education holds in Judaism. When you picture schooling, however, it often brings to mind images of children. The feelings that accompany those images are often ambivalent at best and negative at worst. Our society celebrates our graduation from learning, presents milestones to mark the time from beginning to end. There is a tangible completion from education that is prevalent in our modern society. First the end of elementary and middle schools, then the significant achievement of becoming a high school graduate. From there we celebrate college and graduate school graduations. We treat each milestone, particularly the college ones, as a termination of learning. We celebrate the hard work and dedication of our graduates and welcome them to the “real world.”

What we fail to remember is that not only should learning not end, there is great joy in learning. Judah ben Teima said that “…Five years is the age for the study of Scripture. Ten, for the study of Mishnah. Thirteen, for the obligation to observe the mitzvot. Fifteen, for the study of Talmud. Eighteen, for marriage. Twenty, to pursue [a livelihood]. Thirty, for strength, Forty, for (deep) understanding. Fifty, for counsel. Sixty, for sagacity. Seventy, for elderliness. Eighty, for power.

Ninety, to stoop…” (Pirkei Avot 5:21) Here we see not only the value of learning in Judaism, but that it continues and extends across the entire lifespan.

Preschool Director

On September 11, we held our Preschool Super Shabbat celebrating Rosh Hashanah. Our Preschool families joined our students, Rabbi Miller, Cantor Azu, and Miss Jane to sing special holiday songs and celebrate the birthday of the world and Shabbat.

The entire preschool had a blast baking round challahs symbolizing the world and the circle of life.

One of our favorite holidays at the preschool is Sukkot. Every year, the children make beautiful decorations to adorn the Temple’s Sukkah. This year, the Sukkah was placed in the brand new Temple Garden. The children went over with their classes and Miss Jane, placed their creations in the Sukkah and sang songs and had their snacks.

The Preschool has had a phenomenal start to the school year; many classrooms are at capacity and we still continue to give tours to new parents. Word has spread about the amazing TSP Experience and parents do not want to miss the opportunity to give their children the very best head start to their school careers. Our success is due in part to our dedicated teachers and our TSP families who share their wonderful experiences with their friends and business associates.

In the coming months we will be introducing expanded adult education offerings. As we shared on Rosh Hashanah, we are proud to announce that we are officially joining the Melton School network and will be the exclusive provider of the Melton curriculum here in Naples. The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning is the largest pluralistic adult Jewish education network in the world. The Melton School sets the standard for high-quality, text-based, interactive Jewish study by offering world-class curriculum. We will be introducing two incredible Melton course offerings soon for a January start!

The POTS Committee, led by new president, Mandi Zawacky, met for the first time for the 2015 – 2016 school year.

Nearly every committee filled up with parents who are truly ready to make an investment into the success of their child’s classroom and school. I know with Mandi’s leadership and drive, this will be a stellar year.

As we move into the months ahead, we look forward to supporting St. Jude’s Hospital with our annual Trike-a-thon in early November. Also, be on the lookout for our TSP Spirit Shirts, this year we are taking preorders for our students, siblings and even parents.

But we aren’t stopping with Melton. We are also enriching our own study opportunities to create diverse options for everyone. From single session to series offerings, we plan to provide a wealth of options throughout the year that inform and inspire adult learners from all knowledge-levels and backgrounds.

As always we welcome our Temple Shalom Family to come and visit us at the preschool wing. You will be glad you came!

Between now and the March issue, monthly articles in “The Voice” will feature the four inspiring Temple Shalom members chosen as the brightest sky twinklers in this “Night of Stars”—the spectacular March 26, 2016, Temple Shalom fundraising celebration.

At Yom Kippur, President Neil Shnider announced the inaugural “Star of David Honorees.” Howard and Janet Solot and Dr. Mark and Anne Rubin will shine like the stars they have always been in the constellation named Temple Shalom.

The two couples’ bios may differ in the particulars of their lives, but all four people share their love of Judaism and their devotion to Temple Shalom. Over the next few months, as you read more about them, you’ll understand why they were chosen as the brightest in this night of stars.

Let’s start with the Solots. Janet and Howard, both from Long Island, met when they were 15. Yes, I’ll be trite: it seemed a lot like love at first sight. Before long, they became engaged but wisely decided not to marry until Howard finished college. He earned a degree in mechanical engineering from Cooper Union and was soon employed in a family business spanning three generations. Janet attended secretarial school but made her career that of full-time mother.

“In a span of four weeks,” Janet explained, “Howard graduated from college, we got married and then moved to Canada.” Howard added, “It was a valuable life lesson: we learned immediately to rely on each other.”

Throughout the course of his business life, Howard moved the family around. First from Oshawa, Ontario, to Montreal, Quebec; then to Chicago, where the Solots reared their two children; and then to Sharon, Pennsylvania. They moved to Naples as part-timers in 1994 and shifted to fulltime in 2000.

“Both our son and our daughter live just twenty miles apart in Chicago, which is the city we consider ‘home,’” Janet said. They now have five grandchildren—four girls and one boy. “We initiated a tradition of celebrating their bar or bat mitzvah by taking them, individually, anywhere each wanted to go,” Howard said. “That has worked really well to cement our bond.”

For the Rubins, the story is quite different. Anne lived in Lake Forest, Illinois, until the age of ten, then in Atlanta and Dallas before moving full-time to Naples in 1990. She earned her undergraduate degree at the University of Dallas and a master’s in psychology from Notre Dame. Mark grew up in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and lived there until he left for Harvard (1980 to ’84), then medical school in New York at Columbia University. After graduating with his M.D. degree, he went to Los Angeles for residency from 1988 to ’91 and to Sloan Kettering from 1991 to ’94. Since then, he has been in practice locally.

“My family has a strong Jewish identity,” Mark said. “We kept kosher at home, and my father was quite involved in UJA and Israel Bonds. I became a bar mitzvah, but after that, I didn’t get involved in temple activities until coming to Temple Shalom. Although the synagogue was important, for my Zionist-oriented family, so was visiting Israel.”

Anne became a Jew by choice when she prepared to marry Mark. “I didn’t convert because Mark was Jewish,” she said.

“The desire came from within. I felt it was important to embrace only one religion in the family. I was comfortable with Reform and was always a Zionist, even when I was a Catholic.”

While Mark immerses himself in his calling as a cancer specialist, Anne defines herself as a stay-at-home-mom to their ten-year-old twins Charles and Caroline. But that’s just fine, since, as both Anne and Mark believe, the essence of Judaism resides in the home.

Next month’s article will take us deeper into the reasons for the commitments each of these stars has made to Temple Shalom.

Feeding the hungry is the Jewish people’s way to perform gemilut hasadim (acts of loving kindness) and tikun olam (to repair the world). Please take an empty BOGO blue bag in the Temple lobby. Fill it with non-perishable foodstuff when you shop the BOGO specials at the supermarket each week. Bring the half-filled or filled bag to Temple Shalom and we will see that it helps to fill one of the area food pantry shelves every week. Helping to supply food to those who are suffering from food insecurity is ongoing and not a one time thing. Remember, BOGO not only means BUY ONE GET ONE. It also means to BRING ONE GIVE ONE for those who are hungry.

ENDOWMENT CORNER - For Now and Forever

Dr. Philip & Shirley Gilbert Music Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement of music at Temple Shalom.

by Suzanne Low, Endowment Chair Today I want to share with you highlights of some of the major aspects of our Endowment and Planned Giving Program, with a focus on past, present and future Planned Gifts.

We have close to a half million dollars in general and special purpose endowment funds currently. We also have quite a few planned gifts that we know about, currently totaling near $1 million. These planned gifts will be received by the Temple only upon the death of the donor and, in many cases, the donor’s spouse. It is important that we keep track of these longterm gifts, although we know that we will not receive all of these. (Some donors may move away, change their plans, or spend all of their planned gifts.)

Your planned gift may be in many forms. Most common is a bequest in your Will or Revocable Trust, naming the Temple Shalom General Endowment Fund as the beneficiary of a dollar amount or percentage of your estate. We have heard from donors whose children no longer need their assets that they have designated the Temple as the beneficiary of their IRA or 401k. Under current tax laws, the Temple gets 100% of these retirement plan assets, while the same gift to their children would be taxed first. For example, the Temple would be able to use all of a $75,000 IRA gift, while their children might only receive $54,000 (based on a 28% marginal income tax bracket.) Other possible planned gifts can be made with appreciated securities, real estate, life insurance, personal property or closely held stock. Larger gifts may also be made with charitable remainder or lead trusts.

We will publicize and educate our members on how planned endowment gifts can be structured to allow donors to retain use of their assets for lifetime needs while offering tax advantages and at the same time providing long-term support for the Temple at a higher level than may be possible with a current gift. We know that a number of you have planned generous gifts in the past and we will be contacting you in the near future to verify those gifts that we know about.

We need your help. We have lists of donors who have previously told us they have made planned gifts, but we want to make sure our lists are complete, accurate and up-to-date. This will allow us to plan and also to recognize donors in an appropriate manner. Although I will be telephoning those whose names are on our lists, if you have already made an endowment or planned gift to Temple Shalom, please let us know. You can call me on 239-450-8112 or send me an e-mail to endowmentchair@naplestemple.org, with the type of gift, approximate current value and any other specifics. This information will remain confidential if you wish.

Showing We Care

Contributions made to the various Temple Shalom funds are wonderful ways to show your appreciation of family and friends, to celebrate happy occasions and to honor the memories of loved ones. We suggest a minimum donation of chai ($18.00). With a minimum donation of $18.00, a notice of your gifts will be sent to the honoree and mention will be published monthly in The Voice.

Religious School Enrichment Fund: Donations augment the Religious School budget to enrich the education of our children.

Polster Religious School Scholarship Fund: To purchase or supplement Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Ben Calmenson Fund: Donations will be used to create sponsorships to send children to attend Camp Coleman.

General Fund: Donations used for operating expenses.

Rabbi Abraham Shusterman Children's Center Memorial Fund: To support our Religious School and Preschool.

Tree of Life: Each ‘Rock’ and ‘Star of David’ is a donation of $540.00; each ‘Leaf ’ is $240.00. The contribution must be received in its entirety before engraving is ordered.

Sisterhood Religious School Scholarship Fund: To provide Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Operations

Burn The Mortgage Fund: Established by Gerry and Pearl Sugarman to reduce payment of any existing mortgage.

Worship

Memorial Fund: Donations made in honor of a loved one who has passed.

William Freschel Kiddush Fund: All donations help provide Kiddush Lunch each Saturday following worship services.

A $150 donation is considered to be a sponsorship to honor a special someone or occasion.

Flower Fund: Provides Bimah flowers each Shabbat. A $150.00 donation is considered to be a sponsorship in memory or in honor of a special someone or occasion.

Endowment for the future

Religious School: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for Jewish learning in both Sunday and Hebrew Schools.

Mitzvah Baskets: A $100.00 donation will purchase several hundred dollars of food for JFCS.

Joseph S. Weinfeld Faculty Development Fund: Donations support both curriculum and teaching skill enrichment activities for Sunday and Hebrew School teachers.

Youth Activities Fund: Donations provide financial support for children of our congregation to attend Camp Coleman, to take part in regional/national youth conventions, and to experience a summer in Israel.

Preschool

Preschool Fund: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for the Preschool.

Preschool Enrichment Fund: The enhancement of curriculum, educational programs and experiences.

Arby Lipman Children's Library: Children and adolescent books and magazine subscriptions, and supplies are purchased.

Jack and Charlotte Ward Family Children's Music Shelf: Audio and video musical tapes for children.

Endowment

Endowment Fund: Donations help to secure the future, enrich the programs and provide for emergency needs of the congregation.

Scholar In-Residence Endowment Fund: Supports the endowment established by Shirley and Henry Kraus. This fund enables Temple Shalom to bring visiting scholars to the Temple as an educational benefit to the membership.

The Herbert & Ruth Abramson Fund: To supplement the general operating fund and to provide enrichment for Temple functions.

Clergy/Leadership

Rabbi Miller’s Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes,and general enhancement of the Rabbi's work.

Cantor Azu's Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes, and general enhancement of the Cantor's work.

Leadership Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement and enrichment of leadership programs at Temple Shalom.

Library

Rabbi James & Jane Perman Library: Books, magazine subscriptions and supplies are purchased.

Social Action

David and Lillian Thalenfeld Fund for Social Justice: Provides support for Temple participation in social justice events and activities.

Above & Beyond I/We Care

Donations above regular dues.
