Living By Hope Not Fear A few weeks ago, I shared at Shabbat services the story of one young man whose life changed forever after a trip to the dentist in 1968. Sitting in the waiting room, he noticed a magazine with a long story about the proposed construction of the World Trade Center in New York. Flipping through the pages, he became mesmerized by the drawings and descriptions of this massive undertaking. Suddenly, his mind seized upon the idea to pull off an act that would later be called the “artistic crime of the century” – Phillipe Petit decided that he would tightrope walk between the Twin Towers.

Petit spent six years planning, practicing and preparing for his daring caper. Early efforts included walks between the cathedral towers at Notre Dame in Paris and the Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia. Petit knew that his attempt in New York would be on a wholly different level – and spent countless hours trying to anticipate the swaying of the towers, weather, and how to get a stable rig into place without being caught.

With the help of some collaborators and investors, Petit performed reconnaissance at the site. Taking advantage of the ongoing construction, Petit snuck inside using a variety of tactics. At one point he posed as a French journalist, and was allowed to interview dozens of workers directly. He also rented a helicopter for aerial photography.

The research put Petit in a position to figure out how they would get the equipment up the towers, use a bow and arrow to shoot the guidelines across, and then slowly maneuver the large 450 lb steel cable into place.

Forty-five years ago, on the night of Tuesday, August 6, 1974, Petit and his crew got a ride in a freight elevator to the 110th floor with their equipment. Shortly after 7:00am local time on August 7, Petit stepped out on the wire and started to perform. He was 1,350 feet (410 m) above the ground.

He performed for 45 minutes, making eight passes along the wire, during which he walked, danced, lay down on the wire, and knelt to salute watchers.

While the NYPD could not convince him to come down, the performance ended when it started to rain and Petit voluntarily returned to the rooftop. Crowds gathered on the streets below. Petit said later that he could hear their murmuring and cheers.

As we enter the new year, Petit offers us useful wisdom for understanding how to succeed. Reflecting on how it was that he succeeded in his lifetime of wire-walking across impossible heights, Petit explains, “Before my high-wire walk across the Seine to the second story of the Eiffel Tower, the seven-hundred-yard-long inclined cable looked so steep, the shadow of fear so real, I worried. Had there been an error in rigging calculations?... But, no. I had just forgotten how high were my expectations, how mad I was to have conceived such a project… [I overcame my doubts] I vanquished my anxiety by imagining the best outcome: my victorious last step above a cheering crowd of 250,000.”

If we are to fulfill our dreams, if we are to reach the heights of our highest expectations for what we want this world to be…then we cannot live by fear. We must live by hope – always imaging the best possible outcome. Gandhi famously said, “Be the change that you want to see in the world.”

I would tweak those words just slightly – “BE-LIEVE in the change that you want to see in the world.” And if you believe, then it will be more than a dream. Our hopes will be real.

May all of your hopes and dreams come to fruition in 5780.

For twenty-four hours we fast, gather together in song, in prayer, in contemplation. We have knocked on our hearts, imploring them to open. We have admitted to ourselves and to God where we habitually fall short. We have tried with all our might to forgive ourselves our missteps, our missed marks and, as we near the end of our twenty-four hours, we conclude Yom Kippur with the final service of the day, N’ilah. N’ilah which literally means “to lock” is like that grand finale of all our prayers. It’s our last opportunity to pray and ask for teshuva, forgiveness for our sins.

When we make teshuvah, we sweeten the year to come. Not because we gain any control over what’s ahead, but because we’ve created a shift in ourselves which will allow us to experience more sweetness. That’s the message I hear in the Unetaneh Tokef prayer which we sing on the Days of Awe each year. Who will live, and who will die? Who will be healthy, and who will be sick? We can’t know what the new year will hold. But when we practice teshuvah, tefilah (prayer), and tzedakah (giving to others), we can tackle whatever is to come, because we create change in ourselves. We can’t change what will be, but we can change how we experience whatever comes our way.

May our new Jewish year of 5780 be a sweet beginning for all of us!

We are thrilled to introduce Shalom Yeladim (Hello Children), a FREE program for parents and children 2-4 on select Sunday mornings, during Religious School. Under the leadership of Rabbi Boxman and taught by our very own Gloria Mellman, it will include crafts, yoga, music and lots of fun! Interfaith and unaffiliated families are welcome to learn, make new friends and get a taste of Temple Shalom. Our services are a rich and beautiful tapestry of prayer and song, incorporating both traditional and modern liturgy and melodies that speak to the intellect and the soul.

Children are welcome to attend our High Holy Days services. As an alternative, this year we are introducing a Children’s High Holy Days Experience. Join us on the mornings of Rosh Hashanah (September 30) and Yom Kippur (October 9) for a special *NEW* program for all children in grades 1-6. The program will be run by Rabbi Ariel Boxman and a staff of teachers, and will include a brief, kid friendly service, holiday activities (by grade), and a snack. The High Holy Days Children’s Experience will run for the entire duration of services (approximately 10:00am - 1:00pm). You may begin dropping off students at 9:30am and pick them up at the conclusion of services. To register your child/children please use the onlilne form found at tinyurl.com/y25gp6kr.

Another option for families with young children are the Family Services, which attract multi-generational families and those with young children on Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur afternoons. Family services are specially designed to inspire and engage children and those who love them, around the meanings and messages of the High Holy Days.

We also offer babysitting for those who prefer to let us care for their little ones while they worship. Reservations must be made in advance, no later than Thursday, September 26. Call the Temple Shalom office for more information.

Whether you need a space for the kids to wiggle around or a break for yourself, we’ve got you covered! The Jane and Rabbi James Perman Library will be open and available with a toy wagon for children that need a break. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Technology is a tool that helps students gain knowledge and experience, and has the ability to support learning beyond traditional experiences for very young children. Even if young children do not or cannot use technology resources in the same way that adults do, they see, hear and touch iPhones and iPads during every waking moment. Whether we acknowledge it or not, technology is shaping the way youngsters are developing and they are doing so quite differently than previous generations. Our goal is to integrate play and technology across curriculum strands by using tablets, under the direction of our Science and Technology teacher.

After conducting our research, we determined that Amazon Fire Kids Tablets would be the best choice. The Fire tablets will have access to over 20,000 apps, games, books, videos, audiobooks, and content from PBS Kids. Accordingly with our technology goals, we requested funding from the Temple Shalom Men’s Club to support our goals for the technology curriculum program. We are delighted to announce that not only has the Men’s Club offered to fund the purchase of the tablets, they also will fund the necessary hardware upgrade with the wifi and Internet connectivity! We are grateful and appreciative of the generosity of the Men’s Club, and their commitment to supporting our youngest learners!

Happy October from BBYO! This month BBYO is offering a few exciting events in honor of the season!

But before I announce our very exciting programming for the month, I’d like to formally announce Naples newest B’Nai Brith Girls Chapter – Mishpacha BBG #2552, colors: teal and purple, and mascot: monarch butterflies.

Our Naples BBG’s gathered on August 25 to re-imagine the chapter and re-create something special. They came away with a new chapter name that means ‘family’ in Hebrew and they have their fall term calendar planned! If you are a Jewish girl in grades 8-12 and are interested in becoming a part of this beautiful sisterhood, please join us on the first Wednesday of each month from 7:00-8:00pm at the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples for a bonding and planning session. Also, please email me to be added to our monthly eblast with upcoming programming information.

For BBYO’s Fall Fest, Naples teens are invited to “An Instagrammable Day in Miami” on Sunday, October 6 from 9:00am-4:00pm. Transportation from the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples will be provided to and from Miami.

Southwest Florida BBYO will be headed to Miami’s famous Wynwood Art District. In Wynwood, we will not only adventure through the Art and Wall Exhibit, but we will spend two hours at FUNDIMENTION which will include endless arcade games, laser tag, bumper cars, and a bungy dome. Additionally, Negev AZA and Mishpacha BBG will be hosting a dual event at Farmer Mike’s U-Pick Haunted Corn Maze on Saturday, October 19 at 6:00pm. The AZA’s and BBG’s will be racing through the corn maze to earn bragging rights in our first annual event of the sort.

Our first convention of the year, JEI (Jewish Enrichment Institute), will take place the weekend of November 15-17.

This convention will bring Jewish teens together from as far as Tallahassee to as close as Ft. Myers for an unforgettable weekend of engagement, fun, and ritual at Day Springs Camp.

Havurah Happenings

Debbie Zvibleman As many of us are away from our families during the High Holy Days, we celebrate with our Temple Family or Havurah.

Whether it is a dinner for Rosh Hashanah or Break the Fast, it is a great way to be together to bring in the New Year. It is also nice to invite new members of the Congregation that do not have a place to go. If you go to services, chances are you have met a new family. You can also call the office to see if any new families have joined and are looking for a place to go.

It is a great way to extend our hospitality.

I want to wish all of our Havurot a happy and healthy New Year.

Shalom Chaverim

Andy Karpman “Shalom Chaverim” means “hello friends” in Hebrew. Shalom Chaverim is also the name of an exciting volunteer opportunity at Temple Shalom where Temple volunteers welcome members and guests who come to Temple Shalom for worship, learning and social opportunities.

Temple Shalom is focused on inclusivity, diversity, openness and welcoming, and as such, Shalom Chaverim is a cadre of greeters welcoming and assisting members and guests to our Temple for Erev Shabbat and High Holy Days services. Aside from welcoming people we help them with their name tags, provide directions, assist with seating, prayer books, or hearing assisted devices.

If you are interested in volunteering and becoming a part of Shalom Chaverim, please contact Andy Karpman at andy.karpman@gmail.com. Signing up to be a greeter in the lobby or in the Sanctuary is easy and only takes a few minutes.

We are a congregation dedicated to “Audacious Hospitality” and to helping our members connect and engage. Being part of Shalom Chaverim is fun and you will be making a difference to all of those visiting our Temple by helping to make their experience at Temple Shalom warm and welcoming.

Bereavement Group for Members of the Temple Shalom Community In the spirit of our tradition, which calls us to perform the mitzvah of Nihum Avelim (comforting mourners), Temple Shalom will be offering a Bereavement Support Group for people who are grieving for a loved one. The group, which will observe confidentiality of communication, will meet on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon beginning November 1. Group size will be limited to twelve people. The facilitators, Arline Kaplan, Ph.D., and Leslie Wasserman, M.A., are members of Temple Shalom. Both Arline and Leslie, licensed in New York and Michigan respectively, have extensive experience with groups and with people experiencing grief and loss. “We are hopeful that sharing our stories with empathic, compassionate others will allow some healing, solace and peace into our lives. We can each be the gift that can possibly help to heal the wound.”

By Carole J Greene Phil Freeman recently announced his retirement. Not from his work life; that happened a while ago. This time, he said he was ready to retire from his position as a volunteer visitor of Temple Shalom members at NCH hospitals.Then he changed his mind. He’s not going to retire after all, but will be happy to have others assist him during season when the hospital admissions climb to numbers difficult for one person to handle.

How did it all begin? Phil, a long-time Temple Shalom member, got involved with patient visitation some five years ago, after his wife Anita underwent serious back surgery. “At 5:30 the morning before her surgery,” he reports, “a minister from the First Baptist Church came into our room and offered to pray with us. I asked myself: ‘Where’s our rabbi?’ After the surgery, I stormed into Rabbi Miller’s office and confronted him about what I saw as a lapse in his duty to visit Temple members when they need spiritual comfort. He told me he had no idea Anita was even in the hospital, never mind that she was having major surgery. My eyes were opened.”

After HIPPA rules went into effect, particularly the ones to protect patient privacy, hospitals no longer routinely notified religious congregations when one of their members was admitted. Often the patients—or someone close to them—had to notify the synagogue or church. Regrettably, some patients were out of the hospital before their religious family even knew they were in it. Phil wanted to change this. He went through the hospital’s orientation program for volunteer visitors, received his photo ID badge, learned helpful hints from Rabbi Miller, and started his hospital visitations.

First stop is always the office of the hospital chaplain. There, he picks up a list of patients who marked “Jewish” on their admission papers. He checks with the Temple Shalom office to see if anyone on his list of “Jewish patients” is a Temple member. Then he visits them to share his wonderful sense of humor and his devotion to Jewish values. He keeps a supply of business cards from Rabbi Miller and Cantor Azu in case one of the patients he talks to would like a clergy visit. “Our clergy are wonderful about following up when I let them know,” Phil says. Although his credentials empower him to visit Temple Shalom members, he also visits other Jewish patients who are not on the Temple membership list.

In fact, one of those Jewish-but-not-Temple patients was instrumental in changing his mind about retiring. Phil says: “I visited an elderly woman who was crying when I came in. Her husband had just passed and she said she ‘wanted to join him.’ She not only had stage-4 cancer but had recently suffered a fall and a bad fracture. I was able to get in touch with her rabbi and some social workers to help her. After spending time with her, I realized doing this was part of who I am. My services were still needed.”

Phil reports some interesting experiences. “You never know what you’ll find,” he says.

One 90+-year-old woman loved to tell him jokes—some of them a bit blue. Once he entered a room and found its occupant seated on a portable potty while her hair was being done. “I’m going home today,” she told him, “and have to look my best.”He recalls a man who told him he had never been religious. Phil continues: “I keep a copy of the Mishebeirach prayer in my pocket. I read it to him. He was touched. I don’t pray—that’s not me.” He prefers to chat about ordinary subjects like home, family, friends, hobbies.

And maybe tell a joke or two.

Phil, although he is reluctant to receive attention for his mission to visit the ill, plans to continue for the foreseeable future. He says the satisfaction he feels is beyond measure. For now, he’ll visit patients four or more days a week. Every Tuesday he’ll put in five hours at the NCH North information booth. All pro bono. But, Phil insists, the pay is tremendous.

She and her family moved to Florida when she was three years old. Hannah will be joined in celebration on her Bat Mitzvah by her parents Yohanan and Yolany, her little brother Benjamin and her grandparents; Saul, Amelia and Rossana. Joining the celebration from heaven, Hector Guillermo. Hannah is a seventh grader at Three Oaks Middle School. She loves to read, watch scary movies, and make art.

Having just celebrated the anniversary of the first lunar landing, we would be remiss if we did not congratulate our very own Dan Spintman for his contribution to that historic event.

In Dan’s own words: I started my NASA career working near the start of the manned space flight program. In particular, I was a member of the team working on an airborne tracking station called the Apollo Range Instrumented Aircraft which was used to fill in gaps that could not be covered by ground tracking stations.

By the time the Shuttle program took center stage, I had progressed to the NASA Senior Executive Service. I not only managed the operation of the tracking stations around the world, but also the newly developed satellite based tracking.

We are all geared up to have a spectacular year. The luncheon speakers are all set thanks to Ida and everyone who helped her. Our fundraisers are being worked on by Bunny Kaufman, Debbe Schertzer and Shelley Baron. I am sure that we will need a lot of volunteers to help. Let us know if you want to be one of them. We are also having a few night-time events, so be on the lookout for more information in the weekly announcements, The Voice and special emails blasts. Book Bag will be starting soon. A list of all the books can be found on the Sisterhood page on the Temple Shalom website.

Sisterhood is growing and women have asked about helping. So, here are some ideas: 1. We always need people to greet and check members in at the door for luncheons.

2. Bakers or buyers of baked goods for the onegs are always needed. You can drop off the items in the kitchen on Thursday or on Friday between 10:00am and 11:30am.

3. The Judaica Shop needs volunteers. The shop is open Monday through Friday 10:00am -12:30pm.

Tikkun Olam Council Chair Ken Goldstein Mitzvah Day 2020 We Can Save The World Judaism tells us that whoever saves a single life is considered to have saved the whole world. On Sunday, January 12, we have another opportunity to save the world.

Mitzvah Day at Temple Shalom has always been a special day. Hundreds of people come to help package meals, donate blood, give items that help the needy and share time with our friends and neighbors in a worthy cause.

This year we will have new ways to support worthy charities that truly are making a difference. Some of our new projects are described below. We will continue Meals of Hope and many of the projects you’ve participated in each year. (Due to logistical issues we will NOT be collecting used clothing.) Monetary donations are needed, but we also need your support by donating your time and tangible items.

Following are three new projects we are introducing to Mitzvah Day: Socks and Undies Grace Place is a school in Golden Gate City which caters to migrant, underprivileged children and their families. One of their greatest needs is socks and undies for the kids. Please bring new packages of undies and socks in kids’ sizes to the Temple and drop them into the collection bin located in the Temple lobby after the High Holy Days.

Laces of Love It may be hard to believe, but many schoolchildren in both Collier and Lee counties have never had a new pair of shoes to wear. Laces of Love is an organization that collects boys’ and girls’ sneakers (sizes 1-9) and distributes them through dozens of other charitable organizations. Next time you are in a department store, please pick up one or two pairs, remove them from the boxes, tie them together, and drop them in the collection bin located in the Temple lobby after the High Holy Days.

The “Knitzvah” Project Calling all knitters and crocheters! Here’s your opportunity to perform a “Knitzvah.” Please consider knitting or crocheting one (or several) 20”x 60” pink shawl(s) for donation to breast cancer patients in local hospitals.
