Afew years ago, Thanksgiving and Chanukah occurred on the same night. Thanksgivukkah, as some coined the calendrical event, brought us more than a quirky overlap of dates. While an American cultural tradition, Thanksgiving is the most Jewish of secular celebrations because it shares the same theme as every significant Jewish holiday. At Sukkot, we offer thanks for the harvest. We thank God for our freedom on multiple occasions - from the Syrian-Greeks at Chanukah, and from Pharaoh at Passover. Shavuot expresses our gratitude for the gift of Torah. Saying “Thank you” is part and parcel of who we are as Jews. In this month of giving thanks, we have an opportunity to enhance our awareness of the blessings we have as citizens in this country. Temple Shalom joined with the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples and the Holocaust Museum of Southwest Florida to co-found a new film series: Movies that Matter SWFL. The films shown as part of this series explore issues of human rights. The two films in November focus on civil rights, and how our nation improved equality for all its citizens over the last century. On November 1st at Temple Shalom, “Freedom to Marry” documents the journey to marriage equality for the LGBT community. Later this month, on November 13th, “John Lewis – Get in the Way” details the story of Congressman John Lewis, and the struggle for African-American equality and civil rights in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Both of these films leave one feeling even more grateful for the freedoms we enjoy as Americans. Not only do we offer gratitude for past events and the rights we now enjoy, we also look ahead to see how we can share our blessings with others. We live in a country that allows us freedom to express our religious beliefs, live by our values, and prosper as equal citizens with our neighbors. Just to the south of us, only two hundred miles away, another Jewish community yearns for these same experiences. This month, I am travelling to Cuba as part of a rabbinic mission. My colleagues and I will visit with the Jewish community, learn their history, and discover how we can share our blessings with our Jewish brothers and sisters in Cuba. I look forward to sharing my travels with you, and working together to help that struggling Jewish community. In addition, I hope to lead a future mission from our congregation to visit with the people of Cuba. Finally, I would remind you that while many of us will celebrate Thanksgiving with a lavish feast, football, and family, that not all have that same opportunity. Express your gratitude with a gift of generosity – opening your home to a neighbor or friend, donating food to our Bring One Give One (BOGO/blue bag) collection for the JFCS food pantry, or giving your time to assist at a local food pantry. Let us offer thanks for the blessings we have, and make sure that all have something to be thankful for this year as we mark the most Jewish American holiday.

L’shalom,

MESSAGE

ExECutivE Di RECtoR

Deborah R. Fidel

Ican’t believe it is time to start thinking about Thanksgiving already! It feels strange to me; there are no red and gold leaves, nor is there a chill in the air. My annual ritual of moving sandals and sundresses to the back of the closet to make room for boots and sweaters is a thing of the past. And yet, the calendar tells me that Thanksgiving is on the horizon.

Although it is a secular holiday, Thanksgiving feels very Jewish to me. After all, we are literally the “People of Thanks.” We may be known as the “People of the Book” but the Hebrew word for “Jew” (Yehudi) is derived from the Hebrew word for “gratitude” (hodaya). This theme shows up in the Torah, the siddur (prayer book), Psalms and in the Talmud. There are many reasons that I feel thankful this year. For starters, I am thankful for the opportunity to serve this community, hand in hand with our wonderful volunteers who make our Temple feel like family. There are many people who contribute to the success of our havurot, One Family initiatives, fundraising, and membership activities, for example. The staff and I appreciate each of you and all that you do to help us make this congregation so special.

I would like to take this opportunity to explicitly thank the Sisterhood and Men’s Club members. You show up and do whatever it takes to make sure that our onegs are opportunities for our members to catch up and make new friends, that we have new membership directories every other year, a gift shop full of beautiful Judaica and all sorts of interesting and fun programming, such as lectures, sporting events and family get-togethers.

We may be knoW n as the “p eople of the book ” but the h ebre W Word for “Je W ” ( yehudi) is derived from the h ebre W Word for “Gratitude” (hodaya).

The financial support of our auxiliaries is significant and much appreciated. Most Executive Directors can only dream of being approached by their Men’s Club leaders, asking for a wish list of items that they can purchase for the Temple – and yet, that is exactly what happened to me! Thanks to the Men’s Club, the Preschool will have a beautiful new shed for their outdoor toys, and the tables that have broken over the last twenty years will finally be replaced, allowing us to use the Social Hall and Multipurpose rooms simultaneously. I also want to thank our Sisterhood, who recently created a generous endowment fund to help secure the future of Temple Shalom.

On a personal note, I must thank my husband, Bob and our youngest son, Joshua (17), for their boundless support and patience. They stayed behind in Pittsburgh this year, so that Josh could finish high school with his friends. They have been schlepping down to visit every few weeks since I moved, allowing me to do the work that I find so meaningful in beautiful Naples, and live near my parents - Temple members, Ellaine and Rick Rosen. Speaking of my parents, I need to thank them for repeatedly telling me how wonderful their Temple is, and encouraging me to take the plunge and move down here.

Finally, I would like to offer a heartfelt thanks to those of you who have welcomed me into your hearts, your homes and your lives. You have made it a little easier to be away from my family and friends back in Pittsburgh over the last few months.

To quote the Psalms, “Tov lehodot…” It is good to give thanks. So….Todah Rabbah (thank you) and Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!

5 DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

PREsi DEnt Debra Antzis

My husband and I lived in Brooklyn when we got married, and when our daughter was born, I decided to stop working. I was lucky to have that choice. My husband worked for a law firm in New York, and had crazy hours, and eventually we decided to make a change, to try to find a way that we could have more time together as a family. And more space than we had in our 800 square foot, fifth floor walk-up apartment. On a Monday morning in February or March, Chad talked to one or two people at his firm, and said that if they heard of any job opportunities that they thought would suit him, to please keep him in mind. We both thought the process would take some time, and were ok with that. Sometimes it’s good to have time to adjust to change.

On Monday afternoon, a former client of the firm called one of the partners to say that their general counsel was retiring, and to ask if the partner knew of anyone who might be a good fit for the job. This client’s business was in Naples, Florida. Chad called me to tell me about it, and he sounded excited. I had never heard of Naples, Florida (it was 14 years ago). I went to the computer to check where it was on GoogleMaps and I thought, “Are there any Jews in Naples, Florida?”

To my surprise, I learned that there were. There was even a temple with a preschool that I could send my daughter to in the fall, and, when my children got older, they could attend religious school there. It was a great relief. We did, indeed, move to Naples. We enrolled my daughter in Temple Shalom Preschool, and we paid our dues and became members of Temple. Preschool was really my only point of contact to Temple, except for High Holidays, for quite some time. We renewed our membership every year, and that was pretty much it for us. I received correspondence from Temple about things like Above and Beyond or other fundraising events and ignored them. I thought “I paid my dues, I don’t need to go ‘Above and Beyond’ what is a normal contribution to temple.”

i miGht think of “a bove and beyond” as an extra donation that Was unnecessary for me , but it is a very necessary donation for temple .

Nine or ten years ago, we received a more unusual Above and Beyond solicitation letter from Temple. I think it was signed by Don Shapiro or Connie Mansfield, and it said that unless Temple was able to raise more money through Above and Beyond, we would not be able to meet our obligations.

After reading the letter, I realized what I reasonably should have already known — I might think of “Above and Beyond” as an extra donation that was unnecessary for me, but it is a very necessary donation for Temple. Above and Beyond keeps our doors open.

At that time, Temple’s financial model had not yet changed to the pledge system, but the Temple’s budget was structured with a presumption of raising money over and above dues because dues alone could not sustain the temple. Raising dues to cover all costs would be prohibitively expensive for many of our members and families, and many would feel that they could not join Temple. We would be closing people out, which is really the opposite of what we should be doing.

Above and Beyond is equally important now that we have switched to the pledge, or L’Shalom system. While we are growing, our “sustaining amount” cannot be prohibitive, and Above and Beyond and other fundraising still makes up the difference between our income and expenses.

Above and Beyond was part of what made it possible for Temple to be here when I moved to Naples, and is part of what makes it possible for Temple to be here now. If you have already committed to give to A&B this year, I thank you. If not, please consider doing so. There may be a family in Brooklyn or somewhere else that will be grateful you did. Those of us who are already here certainly will be.

This text was a part of Debra Antzis’ Yom Kippur message.

6 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

As our Temple Shalom congregation has recently grown by a couple hundred folks, it is possible (although not likely) that a few of you have not met Bobbie and Gene Katz. I say not likely because at least one of this dynamic duo (sorry, Batman and Robin—you’ve been bested!) shows up everywhere. And I do mean everywhere!

When the Temple Shalom family honors Bobbie and Gene at this season’s gala event on March 9, 2019, at Grey Oaks Country Club, we’ll be saying “Job well done” for myriad reasons. This and future articles will include information gleaned from extensive interviews with the couple. To start, for all the years of their residence in Naples, Gene has been a pillar of Men’s Club, especially in its fundraising efforts. Every year, he coordinates the Club’s trip to Broadway Palm Dinner Theater in Fort Myers. As Bobbie says: “It’s his thing.”

Bobbie has become Temple Shalom’s cheerleader (according to Rabbi Adam Miller)— because she promotes ALL the temple’s activities—and the congregation’s Jewish Siri (Sisterhood president Carole Flegel dubs her)—because “she knows everything.” Wherever Bobbie is, no matter what she’s doing for Temple Shalom, Gene is there with her. “He’s MY cheerleader,” she says.

Leadership comes naturally to Bobbie. She loves people and has never been shy. She started her community service with National Council of Jewish Women, first for many years up north, then here after the Katzes became Naples residents. Her work with NCJW influenced her to become “Ms. Volunteer,” and for four years she led the local group as its president. She then turned her leadership attention to Jewish Federation of Collier County—now of Greater Naples—serving on its board for many years and for four years as president. She chaired the Jewish Family & Community Services for several years, swung over to preside over Temple Shalom Sisterhood for two years, then was elected president of the Temple Shalom congregation for another two years.

Currently, Bobbie chairs our membership committee. Other Temple committees on which she has often served in a leadership role include One Family, Caring Connection, Meals of Love, Shiva Minyan, and Tikkun Olam. For 18 years, along with assistants, she has assisted with leading Shabbat services at The Carlisle senior community on the first Friday of every month. Bobbie helped organize the Temple’s Women’s Seder and has co-chaired major Temple Shalom fundraising events such as the 50th anniversary celebration, and last year’s “We Are One.” She was recently honored with the BBYO Leadership Award followed quickly by the Woman of Valor award. These last two left her speechless—a rare condition for Bobbie Katz!

Her selfless devotion to the Temple she loves looms large in this list of accomplishments, but she has plenty of supplemental stories. In the coming months, I’ll tell more about the remarkable ways in which this cheerleading Siri does much-needed and much-appreciated work for all of us.

And by Bobbie’s side, you’ll always find Gene—to help and to cheer. i nvitations to “a niGht of i nspiration,” W ill be mailed in early January. opportunities for sponsorships are available for individuals and businesses . to learn more about a niGht of i nspiration, tickets, and sponsorship opportunities, please contact deborah fidel , dfidel @naplestemple .orG, 239-455-3030.

The theme of being grateful runs throughout the entire month of November, with Thanksgiving as its cornerstone. Gratefulness is also a Jewish concept we embrace with our Religious School students. Being thankful and being grateful are both Jewish values. But, what we’d like children to be grateful for and what they’ll tell you they’re grateful for may be two different things. Very young children, when asked, will often answer that they are grateful for toys, siblings, or food. Older children will mention being thankful for days off from school, best friends, and occasionally a broader concept of extended family.

In the context of Judaism, we can bring to our Thanksgiving table a strategy to instill the value of thankfulness. During the month of November, our Religious School teachers will present ideas for children to consider the principle of thankfulness, and that each day is an opportunity to say thank you for the blessings in their lives. At your Thanksgiving table, create an opportunity for children to think about what they are truly thankful for. You might play a game of “Pair and Share.” Pair each child with an adult, and ask them to share their feelings about being thankful. Then, each pair can tell the family around the table what they’re thankful for. Another way to bring Judaism to the Thanksgiving table is to not only be grateful for what we have, but to give back to those in need. Celebrate your good fortune by making a donation to the local food bank or to bring in a bag of food for the pantry.

PREsChool Di RECtoR Seyla Cohen

On October 29, we held our Back to School Night, where our families were able to mix and mingle, and meet all of our incredible teachers. Typically, drop-off and pick-up time at school is focused on the children; parents are quickly getting to work or other appointments and never really have the time to get to know the other parents or their children’s teachers. This was the perfect opportunity for our families to get acquainted, parents meeting with the teachers and getting an update of all the new and exciting ways we are working with the children.

Despite the summer-like weather here in Florida, the fall season is here bringing us into a time of giving thanks and performing mitzvot for those in need. One of the ways in which TSP will fulfill this effort is through participating in our annual Trike-A-Thon which benefits St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This week-long program teaches children about bicycle safety. Each day a different lesson is taught, culminating at the end of the week when preschoolers participate in the Trike-A-Thon with bicycles and helmets and rules of the road in place. Past years, through the generosity of our TSP families, we raised thousands of dollars for this incredibly worthy cause. It is our hope that we are able to exceed last year’s donation to St. Jude.

On November 16, our TSP families will join together and celebrate Thanksgiving at our annual Thanksgiving Feast. This event brings our families together with our children performing songs that they have learned with Miss Jane. Following the performance, families will get together and enjoy a delicious brunch featuring many family favorites.

Over the years, our POTS (Parents of Temple Shalom) Committee has evolved into the most incredible group of active, involved and generous parents. Recently, we have seen many wonderful enhancements on the TSP campus due to their vision. I know that we will be seeing some wonderful new programs and a lot more parent involvement throughout the year. I would like to thank this year’s POTS Presidents, Christina Nelson and Emily Traylor for their commitment to our school.

As the Director of the Preschool, I am thankful for our amazing parents that go above and beyond to make this preschool the best that it is.

I am thankful for the amazing and highly qualified staff that works everyday with boundless energy and enthusiasm for the important job that they do. Most important of all, I am thankful for our outstanding TSP children.

From our family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!

David William Garfield is a seventh grader attending Oakridge Middle School. He is on the Scholar Bowl, Academic World Quest and Odyssey of the Mind teams. He also writes for the school newsletter. David enjoys playing tuba in band and is the leader of the tuba section in Oakridge’s Wind Ensemble. As a lifelong Lego fan, he makes and sells Lego mezuzah cases through his Etsy shop, Brickzuzah, which he runs with his brother Evan (9). He is excited for his upcoming Bar Mitzvah, but not more than his loving parents, Esther and Joshua Garfield. After his Bar Mitzvah, he looks forward to celebrating in Israel with his brother, parents and grandparents. For part of his mitzvah project, he is raising money to plant trees in Israel, and will get to plant some himself while there.

23 MEN’S CLUB

With a completed endowment gift of $10,000 or more you will become a member of our Eternal Light society.

By the time you read this, the Temple Shalom Sisterhood Endowment Fund, with the primary purpose of supporting the religious school, will be our newest fund. Including the General Endowment Fund, eight funds have been created since 2014 by Temple members in memory of deceased loved ones or in honor of their families. Funds can also be set up in celebration of marriages, births, bar or bat mitzvahs or other simchas. It’s hard to think of a more lasting or greater tribute.

In an effort to make endowment giving accessible to everyone, Temple Shalom offers many opportunities for you, your extended family, havurah, business or other affinity group to make gifts over time that will create a named fund as soon as the total dollars reach the minimum of $10,000 needed to name an endowment. You and your group can get together and contribute smaller amounts, in one year or over multiple years that, when reaching $10,000, will be designated a fund with the name of your choice, and will appear in The Voice and on the Temple website, so that anyone can make a recognized tribute or other gift to it. We thank the Sisterhood Board for their foresight in establishing their endowment. We applaud the long-term view of Sisterhood, always doing good for the Temple and seeking with this gift to make a major impact on the health and longevity of Temple Shalom for decades and even generations to come. You too can make a great positive impact with your own lasting legacy gift.

As always, I welcome the opportunity to meet with you confidentially, explain our program in detail, answer any questions you may have and work with you and your advisors to make it happen. Please call me at 239-450-8112 or send an email to endowmentchair@naplestemple.org.

You will become a member of our Legacy Society with your signed letter of intent to make a gift in the future.

Irealize you will only have a few days to vote after you’ve received this newsletter. Hopefully, you’ve already voted by mail or you are committed to voting on November 6. But if you are still not sure I hope you will read this article and make a decision to exercise your rights as a citizen. No matter your political persuasion, the quote above by Larry Sabato says it all. It is the people that “show up” that will determine every election.

...i hope you W ill read this article and make a decision to exercise your riGhts as a citizen.

Each of us has an obligation to not only vote, but we also have an obligation to understand the issues and vote for the candidates that closely match your concerns. As Ed Koch, former Mayor of New York City once said, “If you agree with me on 9 out of 12 issues, vote for me. If you agree with me on 12 out of 12 issues…see a psychiatrist.”

For those of you who vote in Florida, here is a link from the League of Woman Voters of Florida with everything you need to vote…https://bereadytovote.org. MOVIES THAT MATTER

p ursue Justice throuGh poW erful documentary films .

As this article goes to press, we have just concluded the High Holy Days, during which we were often reminded of our responsibilities to try to become better persons in the coming year. One way is to take seriously the command: “Justice, justice you shall pursue.”

The month of November offers two opportunities to become acquainted with and inspired by human rights battles for just causes. At 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 1, Temple Shalom will host “Movies That Matter,” a consortium of local nonprofit groups, to present the 2017 documentary Freedom to Marry. The film takes audiences on a journey through the harrowing, years-long battle for legalization of same-sex marriage. Tuesday, November 13, also at 7:00 p.m., the 2017 film will be John Lewis-Get in the Way. Venue sponsor for this documentary about John Lewis, civil rights hero, congressional leader and champion of human rights, is Moorings Park. You will find the screening in the Sheffield Theatre, 120 Moorings Park Drive.

Freedom to Marry focuses attention on Evan Wolfson, known as the architect of the movement, and Mary Bonauto, the civil rights attorney who argued the case before the U.S. Supreme Court. After the screening, David Goldstein, president of the local chapter of PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) will lead the discussion and a Q & A session. Scheduled for the discussion are Michaela O’Brien, lesbian student activist; Alex Crisi, gay high-school student leader; and Rev. Dawson Taylor of the Naples United Church of Christ.

The November 13 program will captivate you with John Lewis’s heroic fight for social justice by using a radical tool: nonviolent direct action. That strategy led to the film’s title: John Lewis - Get in the Way. Frequently called “the conscience of the Congress,” Lewis traveled on a journey of courage—from searing disappointments in the Jim Crow South and the Civil Rights Movement, to hard-won triumphs in the U.S. House of Representatives. Over the decades, he inspired others to stand up and work to make a difference. During the discussion to follow the screening, Vincent Keyes from the local chapter of the NAACP is scheduled to speak.

Each film is offered free of charge but requires a reservation; a suggested donation is $10 per film. So that anyone interested in learning more about these issues can attend, regardless of their ability to pay, “Movies That Matter” relies on sponsors to help cover expenses.

The mission of this first-ever “Movies That Matter” film festival in Naples is to educate, engage, and facilitate discussion of human rights topics through film. Joining in this endeavor are Temple Shalom, Jewish Community Relations Council, JFGN, The Holocaust Museum and Janet G. and Harvey D. Cohen Education Center, and GenShoahSWFL. To RSVP or to donate, visit the Events page at www.HolocaustMuseum SWFL.org.

We have been invited to join several other FL communities in helping Rabbi Dukhovny’s Jewish community in Ukraine. Many of our students here in Collier need to take advantage of the backpack program to have food for the weekend. Rabbi Dukhovny discovered that many of his young students had little or nothing to eat over the weekend as well. He hired a cook and arranged for the children to come to their school for a hot meal both Saturday and Sunday. Remember, think cold weather and little house heat.

If we choose to help, our share would be $300 for a quarter of the year. For $100 a month, we can feed more than 50 children each weekend. Rather than just sending money for use as needed, we can fill a very important need. How could we say no?

If you wish to participate, please send a check to Temple Shalom and mark in the memo DNFU. This would truly be a mitzvah.

Thank you, Judi Palay and Paul Rosofsky Co-chairs
