CLERGY MESSAGE
Senior Rabbi Rabbi Adam F. Miller
It is difficult to believe that the new year, 5783, is only two months old. Our sense of time warped in the wake of Hurricane Ian. Many of us felt powerless, unable to prevent the damage and destruction, much less anticipate the horrific impact that this storm would have on our community.
Rabbi Hillel Cohn reminds us:
You can control -
Your beliefs
Your attitudes
Your perspective
Who your friends are
How you take care of your body
How many risks you take
How you interpret situations
How kind you are to others
How kind you are to yourself
How often you say “I love you”
How often you say “Thank you”
How you express your feelings
Whether or not you ask for help How often you practice gratitude
How many times you smile today The amount of effort you put forth How much time you spend worrying How often you think about your past
Whether or not you judge other people
Whether or not you try again after a setback
How much you appreciate the blessings you have
As Rabbi Cohn notes, we control how we respond to the events in our world, how we treat others, and the way in which we care for ourselves. Our attitudes, our beliefs, our deeds make a difference. We choose whether to greet someone with warmth, to offer words of gratitude, or to express our feelings. These actions impact others around us.
Most importantly, we need to remember and acknowledge the blessings that we have received. While many of us experienced some form of financial or material loss, we have been fortunate to survive and have the resources to overcome the challenges that have presented themselves. At the same time, we are aware that there are many struggling in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian locally, as well as in other communities around us.
Our congregation responded to Ian’s fury with the Rainbow of Hope initiative, a passionate desire to recover and rebuild, providing assistance to those in need. Members of our congregation provided needed supplies, devoted countless volunteer hours, and gave from their hearts to repair Southwest Florida. Collectively we have brought light to many during this time of darkness.
I am proud to be the rabbi of this congregation, and to see the work that we have accomplished. Still, we know that there is more left to be done. Locally, the recovery and cleanup will take many more months, if not years to fully repair the damage and lives that have been turned upside down.
This Thanksgiving, after going through a storm that was far out of our control, let us remember Rabbi Cohn’s message and pay heed to what we can control. Let us give thanks for the bounty that we each have in our lives. Thanks for the blessings that have enabled us to reach this place in our lives. And, may we each strive to do one more act of chesed, of loving kindness, so that one more person or family in our community will have something to be thankful for this year.
May you all a Happy Thanksgiving and a better year to come.

Cantor Donna Azu
Three of my favorite things to do is travel, eat and watch movies. I wholeheartedly admit that I am a foodie and I often choose where I travel based on the food! Unfortunately, I don’t have the opportunity to travel as often as I would like, so trying foods from other countries and watching travel documentaries have served as a substitute until I am able to visit in person. This was especially true during COVID!
I know that many of you have similar interests as myself and it’s in that vein that I decided to start a new series called “Foodie Films”. My hope is that through these programs, you’ll explore the culture of various destinations and enjoy some delicious food along the way.
Our first program will take place on Sunday, November 13 at 12:30 pm. We’ll view the documentary, “Hummus! the Movie”, a film about faith, community, and growth told through the lens of a dietary staple and superfood, hummus, and how it has brought many people together. A hummus-making demonstration and a delicious feast of several types of Israeli hummus, (salatim) salads, a variety of bread, and a delicious baklava dessert catered by chef Dalia Hemed will follow.
Reservations are currently closed, but if you are interested in attending, please contact me to see if space is available.
Please be on the lookout for more information about future “Foodie Film” programs and if you know of a film that might fit the bill, please let me know. I’d love to hear from you! I hope to see you on November 13 at our first event!

New Year, New Friends
It is Novemnber and our preschool is off to a great start! We have welcomed back all of our students and we are thrilled to see so many smiling faces, as the children laugh and play with their classmates. But, why should the kiddos be the only ones to have fun? Our preschool parents love our monthly “Moms Night Out,” family play dates, and POTS (Parents of Temple Shalom) activities. It is especially gratifying for me as a Rabbi, to welcome parents every Friday morning for our Shabbat celebration, and watch them beam as their children sing, dance, and say the blessings. What a wonderful way for parents to spend time together and form their own friendships!
YESh parents are also spending time with old friends and making new ones at Shalom Café, in the Perman Library every Sunday morning. Parents come for the coffee and bagels, but they stay for the conversation and a chance to hang out with other Temple parents. The YESh parents are in for a treat this year – Shalom Café will also feature a monthly speaker series about raising Jewish children. Keep an eye out for upcoming dates!
The people are what make Temple Shalom so special. We love when our families connect with one another and feel like Temple Shalom is their home away from home. Come visit – we would love to show you around and introduce you to your new friends!

“ Upon three things the world stands: On Torah, on service (prayer), and on acts of loving kindness.” (Pirkei Avot 1:2)
Before the hurricane even hit our area, Temple Shalom’s One Family sprang into action. Since the storm passed, it has been a flurry of activity as our members Bruce and Carol Sherman, chairs of the “Rainbow of Hope” project got organized and mobilized to assist our members and community.
• Led by Tussy Shnider, our dedicated team of helpers called our most elderly members to make sure that everyone had a plan to be safe for the duration of the natural disaster.
• Immediately after the storm, we sent a survey to the whole congregation to gather information about who needed what and who could provide assistance. Temple Board member, Jessica Rosen then organized the information that would help us coordinate our response.
• Members opened their doors to let in neighbors and friends needing power, a hot shower, or a dry space. Let me take this opportunity to personally thank Rabbi Boxman, and her husband Asher for so graciously opening their home to my husband, Bob, our yellow Labrador, and me, when we had no electricity and water. Some, who own rental homes even gave their properties to other members with nowhere to go - at no cost. Past President and realtor, Debbie Zvibleman, graciously helped members find new homes and rentals.
• In the days after the storm, Rabbi Miller and his family oversaw a collection of more than ten truckloads of supplies for the shelter in Lee County. Since that time, we have held three additional collections, filling two dozen additional vans with small household appliances, towels, cleaning supplies, air mattresses, personal hygiene items and new clothes for the residents of several hardhit areas.
• Lisa Lauber and Di Karpman and a couple other members of our Havurah made multiple trips to River Park and Harmony Shores Mobile Home Park to deliver cleaning supplies and stacks of piping hot pizzas, donated by Alta Villa Pizza and Trattoria, as people gathered to collect what they needed to repair their homes.
• Others comforted their friends after tragic losses by bringing lunch, flowers and good cheer and began helping them to literally pick up the pieces as they sorted through their belongings and carried them out to the curb.
• Cantor Azu’s volunteer drivers delivered catered dinners to affected members to raise their spirits and let them know One Family cares about them.
• Dozens of Temple members pack thousands of nutritious meals with our partners from Meals of Hope every week, in an ongoing effort chaired by Bruce Sherman.
• My Havurah led a food drive for the Harry Chapin Food Bank.
• The Temple Shalom Preschool made a meal train for affected parents and teachers.
• Veora Little led a team to Sheltering Pines, a mobile home park on San Carlos Island to pull up floors and knock out dry wall for people whose homes were severely damaged.

LEADERSHIP MESSAGE
• Even our teens are showing up for One Family! Sophia Baer and mom Claudia, and Zachary Sissman and Sammy Sissman, with mom (and Immediate Past President) Daryl, have cleaned up members’ homes and property that were damaged beyond repair.
• In response to the blood shortage in our hospitals, resulting from the influx of patients from Lee County, Jane Perman arranged a blood drive so that our members and neighbors could share in the mitzvah of giving life.
• Temple Shalom’s talented clergy, Rabbi Miller, Cantor Azu and Rabbi Boxman led a healing service that soothed and comforted those in attendance and on livestream.
• Arline Kaplan Ph.D. and Leslie Wasserman, M.A. shared their services as counselors in an informative session about the effects of trauma on our lives and well-being.
• Many, many members gave financial assistance for those struggling after this natural disaster. To date, we have collected over $30,000!
• Working in partnership with other synagogues in our region, we are channeling resources to replace damaged equipment at the Temple Beth El preschool in Fort Myers.
• And last but certainly not least…. Bobbie Katz is overseeing a group of wonderful note writers, to let all our donors know how much their gifts mean to those affected by the storm.
I am certain that I have forgotten some of the mitzvahs and the mensches who performed them, but know that your acts of loving kindness are a credit to the Jewish community of SWFL. THANK YOU, ONE AND ALL, for all you have done, for all you do and for all you continue to do to support each other and our fellow Floridians. Hurricane Ian may have knocked us down, but it didn’t knock us out, thanks to you!

Diamo are forever
Honorees Dan and Judi Spintman
By Carole J. Greene
When considering couples to honor at Tempe Shalom’s major fundraiser, clergy and staff suggest possible names—members who have generously given their time, talents, and treasure—narrowing the list until they settle on those most deserving. This profile and another next month will acquaint you with the two couples to be honored at the March 25, 2023, “Diamonds Are Forever” 60th anniversary dinner.
Let me introduce Dan and Judi Spintman.
Ladies first. Judi was born and reared in Baltimore. She became a bat mitzvah in her family’s modern Orthodox shul, where that rite was just opening up to women. “Allowing a girl to read from the Torah— not the scroll itself, but a printed excerpt—was a new concept.” She stayed in town for her education, studying biology at Goucher College. Because her father was executive director of the Baltimore Hebrew Congregation, Judi joined the college youth group it sponsored. Its leader was a Johns Hopkins engineering student, Dan Spintman. Friendship blossomed into love, and soon they married.
Dan was enrolled in the ROTC program, so after he graduated, he scooped up his bride and took her to Fort Riley, Kansas. Bonus: Kansas State University was literally down the street. Even better: the wife of an officer qualified for in-state tuition, enabling her to finish her education.
When the two-year military commitment ended, Dan and Judi returned to Baltimore with the first of their two children. Judi taught high-school biology. Child # 2 came along and Judi tried to be a stay-at-home mom, but that lifestyle was not for her. “Dan, fortunately, was totally supportive. He was a women’s libber before there was such a thing. Our children survived being reared by a working mother.” Her master’s degree in guidance and counseling led to her 17-year career as a guidance counselor, added to 10 years as a biology teacher.
Dan’s turn. Born in Washington, D.C., where his father was a patent attorney in the U. S. Patent Office, Dan grew up in a Conservative congregation, where he became a bar mitzvah. While earning his electrical engineering degree at Baltimore’s Johns Hopkins University, he was tapped to lead the Baltimore Hebrew Congregation’s college youth group—even though he was not a member of that Temple! There, he met Judi, and you already know what happened.
c
Continued
Once back home after their Kansas stint, Dan took a job with NASA, specifically at the Goddard Spaceflight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Conveniently, Judi worked in the Prince George’s County school system right across the street.) He earned a master’s degree in engineering management—paid for by NASA—and was promoted to manage tracking stations around the globe, all in support of the manned spaceflight program. “I traveled extensively—for example, to Australia eight times,” said Dan.
During the Carter administration, the Senior Executive Service (SES) was established. “NASA recognized that the military’s ranking system led to careers that carried a lot of weight—as officers rose to the level of generals and admirals. But civil service had no counterpart. The SES set that up, so that civil servants could attain levels equivalent to general officers.” And he got to manage all that, nationwide. “When you work with good people, top notch in their fields,” Dan said, “it’s amazing what that helps you to do. You begin to trust your own opinions more and more. You develop self-confidence.”
With self-confidence born of a stellar NASA career, and a 27-year career in education, the Spintmans moved full-time to Naples in 1996, after being snowbirds for two years prior. They immediately jumped into activities at Temple Shalom. “We found a warm, friendly congregation, nice services, and delightful Onegs,” said Judi. She joined Sisterhood, where she would spend the majority of her time, talents, and treasure for the next quarter century. Although she refused to go onto the board, saying, “I don’t do meetings,” she did nearly anything asked of her. Judi commented that she has always been “a workerbee than a chairperson —just give me a set job on a committee, and I’ll do it.” She ran seders, served on fundraiser committees, and for 15 years, managed the Temple Shalom Gift Shop. She didn’t just show Judaica items, she also “did membership” in that shop. But when the pandemic hit and the Temple basically closed its doors temporarily, she decided it was time to retire. “New blood in the gift shop might find new vendors, more attractive merchandise.” So she retired. But not before she was honored with Sisterhood’s top awards: the “Special Menschen” and the “Woman of Valor.” Those plaques haven’t yet found a place of honor since the Spintmans moved to their Moorings Park home only a few months ago. But they will soon come out of their boxes.
Dan’s attitude toward his Temple contributions was the opposite of his wife’s. From Day One until the pandemic, he sang in the Shabbat and High Holy Days choirs. He served elected offices on the Temple’s Board of Trustees for ten years—some as either second or third vice president, some as treasurer. He served on the Shalom 2000 committee to oversee the construction of the Temple’s education wing. He chaired a recent Rabbi selection committee as well as the bylaws review committee. Finance has always been an area of Dan’s interest, so he is still on the finance committee, after serving there for many years.
Both Judi and Dan emphasized that Judaism has always been at the center of their lives. After family and career, they consider their work on behalf of the Jewish community to be their highest priority.
When Executive Director Deborah Fidel phoned to ask them to come to the Temple for a little chat over the summer, they figured it was to persuade them to chair an important committee. Driving there, they practiced saying “no” in polite but firm ways, as they both feel that it is time for a new generation of lay leaders to take the reins. When Rabbi Adam Miller joined Deborah, the two leaders of our congregation asked Judi and Dan if they would consider being honored at our next major fundraising event. Dan said, “It was so unexpected! We were surprised.” Judi said, “We are very honored. It’s thrilling. Now we’re working on how to get all the kids and grandkids here.”
Look for more information about this opportunity to fete two very special couples and mark your calendar for March 25. Stay tuned next month for an introduction to Susan and Nat Ritter, our other special and deserving honorees.

Volunteer Highlight
Bobbie Katz, Volunteer Extraordinaire
By Carole J. Greene
No series of articles about Temple Shalom volunteers could be complete without one about Bobbie Katz. She is probably the most recognizable member of the Congregation. In fact, many members know her better than anyone else at Temple, including the clergy! Executive Director, Deborah Fidel calls her “quasi-staff” because she spends so many hours volunteering for Temple.
She is a real asset to the Temple and everyone who meets her. Bobbie was named Temple Shalom’s cheerleader by Rabbi Adam Miller, because she promotes ALL the Temple’s activities with so much enthusiasm. Former Sisterhood president Carole Flegel dubbed her Jewish Siri, because “she knows everyone and everything about Naples.” Ask her anything and she will tell you where to go, how to get there and who to ask for when you arrive.
Leadership comes naturally to Bobbie. She loves people and has never been shy. She started her community service with National Council of Jewish Women up north, and then locally, after she and her husband Gene became Naples residents. Her work with NCJW influenced her to become “Ms. Volunteer,” and for four years she led the local group as its president. She then offered her leadership skills to Jewish Federation of Collier County—now of Greater Naples—serving on its board for many years and for four years as president. She chaired the Jewish Family & Community Services for several years, before being elected Temple Shalom Sisterhood president for two years, followed by a term as president of the Temple Shalom Congregation for two years.
Currently, Bobbie chairs our membership committee. She also serves in a leadership role on several other committees, including One Family, Caring Connection, Meals of Love, Shiva Minyan, and Tikkun Olam.
One of the most fulfilling aspects of her volunteer work has been leading monthly Shabbat services at the Carlisle Senior Community. She and a few other people have been doing this for more than 20 years, on the first Friday of every month. Bobbie helped organize the Temple’s Women’s Seder and has co-chaired major Temple Shalom fundraising events, such as the 50th anniversary celebration, and 2018’s “We Are One.” On our annual Mitzvah Day, you will always find Bobbie hard at work—wherever she’s most needed.
Four years ago, she was honored with the BBYO Leadership Award, followed quickly by the Woman of Valor award. These last two left her speechless—a rare condition for Bobbie Katz!
Her selfless devotion to the Temple she loves looms large in this list of accomplishments. Our beloved cheerleading Siri does much-needed and much-appreciated work for all of us. She is irreplaceable and one of a kind!!

Simone is a New York Times & USA Today bestselling author of 11 teen romance novels. One of her books, titled “How to Ruin a Summer Vacation,” is a hilarious fiction novel about a teen girl who goes to Israel for the summer and gets herself into ridiculous situations which is loosely inspired by experiences she’s had in Israel as a teen. She graduated from the University of Illinois with her Bachelor’s degree in psychology and from Loyola University-Chicago with her Masters degree in Industrial Relations. Simone has two adult children, Samantha (25 and lives with her husband who is in the US Marines) and Brett (22 in grad school at Columbia University in NY), who don’t live in Florida but visit her when they can. Simone has been to Israel at least 10 times and has a lot of extended family there. She’s truly enjoying living in the sunshine state, playing pickleball, writing her next novel and playing mahjong, but she does miss the connection with other Jewish people so she’s super excited to join Temple Shalom!

MEN’S CLUB
Men’s Club President Ron Yasbin
Happy Thanksgiving!
It is hard to believe that we are getting ready to celebrate Thanksgiving. While this past year has been sometimes stressful and even depressing, there have been reasons to be thankful as well as proud.
For instance, the magnitude and depth of the support that is being generated to help our fellow residents of SW Florida following Ian is truly impressive. The leadership that our Clergy and congregation are showing in standing up to Anti-Semitism and teaching our youth that one can not stay silent against hate is inspiring and so desperately needed. The growth and strength of our youth programs has to bring smiles and confidence to everyone who observes the activities and numbers.
With respect to the Men’s Club, I find it so rewarding to see our commitment to these programs and activities. This could not be happening without our members and our Board.
In October we were finally able to thank Ed Cohen (post-pandemic shutdown) for his 13 years of service as President of the Men’s Club. While I want to thank all past and present Board members (as well as their spouses/partners and family members), special thanks have to go out to Phil Freeman, Gene Katz and Alan Peltz who worked tirelessly for a decade or more for the Men’s Club and the greater community.
As we move past Thanksgiving, your Men’s Club will continue to support our members, the Congregation, the greater community and especially the youth. We will be having our Deli Sale in January (in cooperation with the Cantor’s Foodie Film program), sponsoring the Naples Jewish Book Festival, bringing back our Dinner Theatre fundraiser, sponsoring golf outings, providing scholarships to BBYO, etc.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Ian’s devastation, the food needs of our community have greatly increased. Temple Shalom and the Tikkun Olam Volunteers (TOV) are ramping up efforts for the Harry Chapin Food Bank at the Thaksgiving drive-thru collection on Sunday, November 13 from 10:00am to 1:00pm.
The Harry Chapin Food Bank is serving as the safety net of the community, bridging the gap between people who are hungry and accessible, nutritious food. Prior to the storm, they distributed on average 700,000 pounds of food throughout their five-country footprint each week. They now anticipate needing to distribute 2,000,000 (yes that’s two million!) pounds each week for an extended period of time.
You can help by dropping off non-perishable items from the list below. No need to exit your vehicle! Just drive up and a volunteer will collect the donated food from your car. Breakfast
