Adam F. Miller Giving Thanks and Seeing Our Traditions in a New Light Later this month, Americans will gather on Thanksgiving at tables across our land to offer thanks for our blessings. At Thanksgiving, most of us will sit down to a meal that involves some form of what we think of as the holiday staples: turkey, stuffing, cranberries, and sweet potatoes. At the center of almost every menu will be some form of turkey: some may offer fried turkey, others oven-baked, some do an elaborate turducken, or some form of tofurkey. I remember learning from my youth that our modern Thanksgiving meal was modeled after the first celebration – where Pilgrims and indigenous Native Americans gathered together to share a meal of turkey and the bounty of the harvest. That image was turned upside down when Jennifer and I moved to Massachusetts. There we learned that when the pilgrims first arrived, mussels, clams, and lobster were abundant in that region and were a major source of protein. As a result, the first Thanksgiving meal most likely consisted of venison, fowl (including turkey), and a bounty of fish and shellfish. Quite a different menu than what we usually find around our tables today! Although discovering that new knowledge of Thanksgiving felt a bit jarring after decades of narrative around turkey, learning about the holiday as an adult deepened my appreciation for the festival. Thanksgiving is not just about filling one’s table with a bountiful feast. It is also about being grateful for the blessings that you have – just as those who gathered centuries ago filled their table with the food around them. Whether one has turkey, tofurkey, or another protein altogether, it is the act of giving thanks, gathering with family, and celebrating that matter most. Like that narrative of turkey at the first Thanksgiving, many of us carry stories we learned about our Jewish heritage and tradition that were first instilled in us as children. While those teachings served a purpose, they were designed to engage us when we were young. Myths, like that of the Chanukah oil, once helped us to fall in love with being Jewish. But, they may not be able to sustain us as adults, when we see the world
through more mature and experienced eyes. Learning about holidays and traditions as an adult, provides deeper meaning and appreciation for our heritage. Chanukah, for example, was originally a celebration of Sukkot – the harvest festival – which was delayed because the Temple was desecrated. An eight-day festival, the second celebration of Sukkot evolved over time into a celebration of our freedom and the rededication (Chanukah) of the Temple after recapturing it from our enemies. The rabbis invented the story of the oil centuries later to deemphasize the military rebellion and discourage others from revolting in the future. Instead of losing meaning, the holiday now feels more relevant with this adult understanding of its historical origins. We recognize that Chanukah is about offering thanksgiving for our freedom to be Jewish, even while living in a society where we are in the minority. There are many other areas of our Jewish tradition for us to explore from our adult perspective. We are blessed at Temple Shalom to offer the Melton School for Adult Learning. This nationally acclaimed program is only available in Southwest Florida at Temple Shalom. The core class program offers a chance to explore Jewish rituals, history and ethics with a cohort of learners over the course of three years. Additional electives cover topics that include American Jewish history, Jewish humor, the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, and the Holocaust. Each class is open to all adults in our community, and are taught by Rabbi Boxman, Rabbi Frank Muller, and myself. Watch your email for more information on this year’s Melton courses, as well as a “Taste of Melton” introductory program. May we not only give thanks this year for the blessing of our heritage, but also for the value of finding a deeper connection to the tradition that we cherish. For the past year, in partnership with the Milken Archive of Jewish Music at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, I was able to teach a curriculum on a variety to musical subjects such as “Western Art, Music, Trends and Innovations in Jewish Music” and “Musical Journey’s through the Holocaust”. This series, “Stories of Music,” is new way to engage with your American Jewish identity and history through the lens of music and I’m thrilled to share that I will be continuing the series with two additional lessons in November and December. In the month of November, we have the opportunity to celebrate both Thanksgiving and Chanukah! What an incredible chance for us to thank God for our miracles, both small and large. In order to give thanks, we may use our words, and also our actions. Below are some ways to share our thanks with those we love, and bestow acts of kindness on others. 1. Prior to Thanksgiving day, grab a few extra items from the grocery store and donate to a local food bank. Nothing says gratitude more than giving to those who are less fortunate. 2. Begin your Thanksgiving meal by saying the shehechiyanu blessing thanking God for bringing your family to this special day in the secular year. We say the shehechiyanu prayer on all special moments as we give thanks for being present at a joyous moment. The words to shehechiyanu are: Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech Ha’Olam Shehechiyanu Vikiyamanu Vihigiyanu Lazman Hazeh.
3. Go around the table and have everyone share what they are grateful for this year. Traditionally, Jews give thanks every day when we recite the words of the hoda’ah blessing in the Amidah. Why not offer an extra special moment of gratitude on Thanksgiving? 4. Say the birkat hamazon, our blessing after eating upon completion of your delicious meal. This musical blessing is well known to many of our kids who attend Jewish Summer Camp as they recite it twice a day at camp ALL summer. CONNECT WITH US Shabbat Shalom Callers Do you have time to make a phone call once a week? Say Shabbat Shalom to a Super Senior! At Temple Shalom, building relationships is a priority. Relationships – one to another, with our Temple, with Torah and God – all are a central part of our planning. We work consciously and conscientiously (deliberately and diligently) to build relationships. Our One Family identity is all about relationships. Among us are some older members who are mostly alone. We call them our Super Seniors! During the pandemic we learned how much it meant to these Super Seniors to feel connected to Temple Shalom. During the first 14 months of the pandemic, a group of volunteers made weekly phone calls to our Super Seniors, keeping in touch, staying connected, developing relationships. Many of the callers and Super Seniors did not know each other before the phone calls started. But after many months of weekly calls, some of them became friends. New connections; new relationships. Our Temple Shalom leaders came to understand the importance of these relationships in the lives of our Super Seniors. It became clear that these weekly connections would be appreciated during the more ordinary times. Our Super Seniors need Temple connections in normal times, not just during a period of crisis. We were asked to put together a non-pandemic system of weekly calls. An initial group of callers were identified by the volunteer email survey done in June. Our super Seniors were identified by staff. We matched up the two groups and the phone calls began. Because this new chapter of phone calls is not specifically pandemic related, we expect it to continue long after the current pandemic is gone. This new call system is designed to be an ongoing part of our One Family.

LEARN WITH US Israel: Up Close and Personal: A Virtual Journey to the Promised Land Wednesdays, November 3, 10, and 17 12:00pm-1:15pm Via Zoom (link in weekly email) Travel to Israel may be on our hearts and minds, but sadly, in the world’s current climate, our visits are regulated to spirit, not in body. Join master educator and Israeli tour guide, Uri Feinberg for three virtual sessions, where we will virtually travel together to the Jewish State. In each session, Uri will uncover a different layer of Israeli society, history, past and present. Keep your eyes open, because we may even meet some Israelis on the ground. Travel with us and add to what you already know about the State of Israel, deepen your historic knowledge of the Land of Israel and strengthen your connection to the Jewish State. Session 1: The Early Zionists: Who were they, what did they believe, where did they go, and what was the link that connected it all? This day will take us on a journey from the ancient port of Jaffa, to the earliest settlements of the First Aliya Moshavot and the alley ways of the first Jewish suburb. We will continue our trek north, to the Kinneret training farm and ultimately uncover the Chalutzim and Chalutzot (pioneers) of the Second Aliya on our visit to the Kinneret Cemetery. A tour such as this would not be complete without meeting a modern-day Zionist with a Second Aliya heart. Session 2: The Golan Heights: In the footsteps of hikers, fighters, farmers and a 5th century frontier. While the Jilaboon is just one example of a river and waterfall on the Golan, it is perhaps THE example of the abundance of water and nature that beckons the hiker. Our visit this day will also include a conversation with a local farmer and the tasting of chocolate. We will visit the archeological remains of an ancient synagogue from the Byzantine period. Finally, the geopolitical overviews of the powerful basalt landscape will not only present what became available at a heavy price, we will also visit our neighbors to bear witness to the world war occurring across our borders. Session 3: The Second Temple: Pilgrims and Sects, the footsteps they took, and the stones that fell. Divided we fall, which means once we stood. Who were we 2000 years ago, what did we believe, where did we live, why did it end- and why wasn’t that the end? Villages and strongholds, communes and mansions serve as the backdrop on our journey which will include songs of ascent, sites of the fall and the written word that led to return.
About Your Guide Uri Feinberg has been a Jewish educator for twenty-five years. Born in the US, Uri immigrated to Israel when he was ten, grew up in Jerusalem, served in the IDF and then, traveled the world. Uri has a Masters Degree from the Hebrew University in Contemporary Jewish Studies, and was a Jewish history teacher for North American teens, in semester programs in Israel, for many years. A licensed tour guide since 1999, Uri has worked as a tour educator for a wide range of groups including synagogues, Federation, URJ and CCAR leadership, interfaith and more. He has guided Jewish heritage trips throughout Europe and has lectured on Israel and Jewish identity across North America. In the current climate engulfing the world in 2020/2021, Uri has re-harnessed what he does, and has taken his knowledge and his passion 13 online.

The Western Wall Tunnel is a tunnel exposing the Western Wall from where the traditional, open-air prayer site ends and up to the Wall’s northern end. Most of the tunnel is a continuation of the open-air Western Wall and is located under buildings of the Muslim Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem. While the openair portion of the Western Wall is approximately 60 metres (200 ft) long, the majority of its original length of 488 metres (1,601 ft) is hidden underground. The tunnel allows access to the remainder of the Wall in a northerly direction. In 19 BCE, King Herod undertook a project to double the area of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem by incorporating part of the hill on the Northwest. In order to do so, four retaining walls were constructed, and the Temple Mount was expanded on top of them. These retaining walls remained standing, along with the platform itself, after the Temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70 BCE. Since then, much of the area next to the walls became covered and built upon. Part of the Western Wall remained exposed after the destruction of the Temple. Since it was the closest area to the Temple’s Holy of Holies that remained accessible, it became a place of Jewish prayer for millennia. “Warren’s Gate” lies about 150 feet (46 m) into the tunnel. For four hundred years, this sealed-off entrance was a small synagogue called “The Cave,” where the early Muslims allowed the Jews to pray in close proximity to the ruins of the Temple. Rabbi Yehuda Getz built a synagogue just outside the gate. Today it is the closest point a Jew can pray near to the Holy of Holies, assuming it was located at the traditional site under the Dome of the Rock.

B’nai Mitzvah Jonah Miller November 6
Gabriel Miller November 6
Jonah is a sports FANATIC with a great sense of humor. He is in 8th grade at Community School of Naples. Jonah is an avid golfer, and most recently concluded his 3rd season as a member of the CSN Middle School golf team, which had an undefeated season! Jonah also spends his time writing and producing his sports podcast, “The Little Man Big Mouth Show.” Jonah also participates in Model UN at Community School, and is volunteering as a Madrich this year with YESh. Jonah’s favorite place in the world is URJ Camp Coleman. Jonah is excited to share his Bar Mitzvah with his twin brother Gabriel, and the whole Temple Shalom community.
Herman Kaufman November 13 Herman, currently in the 8th grade at CSN, was born in Moscow, Russia. His favorite subjects in school are history, math, and foreign languages. He loves playing goalie for his school and club soccer teams. Herman also loves playing baseball and is a big Tampa Bay Rays fan. He enjoys fishing, video games, texting with his friends, and playing with his dog, Duke. Herman is excited to share celebrating his Bar Mitzvah with his family and friends.

Gabriel has a mind for stats, math, and all things sports! Gabriel is in 8th grade at Community School of Naples. He is a competitive swimmer and has swum for his club team, Swim Florida, for four years. He is also about to wrap up his third year on the CSN Varsity Swim Team. Gabriel participates as part of the CSN Middle School robotics team, with hopes of competing at the National and then World competitions this year with his self-built robot. Gabriel’s home away from home is URJ Camp Coleman. He is excited to share his Bar Mitzvah with his twin brother, Jonah, and the whole Temple Shalom community.

Bereavement Group for Members of the Temple Shalom Community In the spirit of our tradition, which calls us to perform the mitzvah of Nihum Avelim (comforting mourners), Temple Shalom will be offering a Bereavement Support Group for people who are grieving for a loved one. The group, which will observe confidentiality of communication, will meet on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month from 9:30am to 11:00am. Group size is limited to twelve people. The facilitators, Arline Kaplan, Ph.D., and Leslie Wasserman, M.A., are members of Temple Shalom. Both Arline and Leslie, licensed in New York and Michigan respectively, have extensive experience with groups and with people experiencing grief and loss. “We are hopeful that sharing our stories with empathic, compassionate others will allow some healing, solace and peace into our lives. Tikkun Olam Volunteers Chair Don Belmont “Miracles sometimes occur, but one has to work terribly hard for them.” Chaim Weizmann (1874-1952), Israel’s first President The Tikkun Olam Council (TOC) has a new name – the Tikkun Olam Volunteers (TOV)! ‘Tov’ is the Hebrew word for ‘good’. What better acronym for a group of congregants who want to do good things for the world through social action and social justice involvement! I hope you will join us as the TOV tries to build a better world around us. Our Temple is fortunate to have many congregants who are extraordinarily committed to tikkun olam (repairing the world). One such member is Ken Goldstein, who has turned his faith into action as the first chairman of the Tikkun Olam Volunteers and by involving himself with ongoing efforts to build a better world. Let’s get to know him and find out what makes him tick. How does tikkun olam/social action/social justice reflect your Judaism, ie, why do you do it? Ken: “I grew up in Brooklyn, NY and I suspect social action and social justice was somehow infused in my DNA. Having said that, I always felt I should have done more during the 1960s. I had left school earlier than planned, married in 1967, and spent those years just trying to survive. When I retired, I joined a synagogue in New Jersey and heard the rabbi give a sermon during the High Holy Days about social action. His message was that in order to make an impact you need to sacrifice something. He asked, “What are YOU willing to sacrifice?” That question resonated with me and I wrote to the rabbi and told him that I’m willing to sacrifice some of my time and money for social action and social justice. We spoke after he received my note and he asked that I contact the social action committee. I did, and that led me on the path I am now on.” What has been your favorite tikkun olam project? Ken: “It’s hard to pick one project. We did a number of educational forums on health care, the environment, civility and reducing gun violence. Rabbi Miller began each forum explaining our Jewish values for each topic. That really helped to put everything in the right context. All of those forums were well received. If I had to choose a single project, I would mention the clothing and food drives last year. Both were so successful. A lot had to do with being cooped up during COVID and finally having an easy and safe way to help others.” What are your tikkun olam interests? Ken: “I like volunteering. I have volunteered at the Harry Chapin Food Bank in Naples and at the Naples Senior Center in Continued

TIKKUN OLAM their dementia/respite program. The pandemic stopped some of that for a while, but the dementia/respite program just restarted in August. I know I’m not creating world peace or a cure for cancer, but I am making things just a little better, even for only a few hours, for those dealing with dementia as well as their caregivers. I can honestly say it is the best thing I’ve ever done.” We live in such an affluent area - is there really a need for food donations? Ken: “The short answer…YES! Under the leadership of Susan Hager, we are working on an educational forum on hunger and food insecurity. We hope to provide our congregation with information about hunger and food insecurity here in Southwest Florida. We also hope to let people know how all of us can advocate for systemic change.” What are some things that Temple Shalom congregants can do to help? Ken: “First, I hope they will turn out for the food drive on Sunday, November 14. Not only is food needed, but cash can make a huge difference. Harry Chapin Food Bank can make our cash donation go a lot farther through their purchasing power. Second, check out the opportunities for volunteering at Harry Chapin or any of your favorite charities. Your participation does make a difference.” Strong work, Ken! Yasher Koach!

Men’s Club President Ron Yasbin
Happy Hanukkah! Again, the hope is that this will be the last of our holidays to be celebrated under pandemic conditions. The Men’s Club Board has had to scale back some planned activities because of the present situation. Accordingly, our usually very successful night at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theater has been postponed until March/April of 2023. Not only has this event been enjoyed by all who participated but, it has been our major fundraiser. Despite this, we are determined to continue to support essential causes of the Congregation and the community and host safe events. This past month we sponsored a successful tour of the REVS Institute. With respect to financial donations, we are supporting this year’s Naples Jewish Book Festival and we are providing funds for YESh and the preschool to purchase iPads and tablets for the teachers and administrators, so that they can seamlessly be in contact with parents. In addition, we are providing funds to support our youth, including helping students attend the “L’taken” Seminar in Washington, D.C. In order to honor all of our commitments, we need our members to remember to join this year. If you have not yet joined, please do so as soon as possible. We will also be launching additional fundraising activities. We intend to once again offer the opportunity to purchase kosher meals from Ben’s Kosher Deli of Boca Raton. As soon as we are able, we will be looking into a variety of other activities that should be of interest to members of different ages and interests. It goes without saying that we are looking for men interested in taking leadership roles in your Men’s Club. If you are interested in helping to lead an activity and/or to serve on the Board, please contact me. SISTERHOOD Happy 100th birthday Helen Weinfeld!
Sisterhood President
Helen and her husband, Joseph, moved to Naples in the late 1960s. She has been a member of Temple Shalom for over 50 years! Over the years, Helen has been very involved at the Temple and in the Jewish community. She has served on the Sisterhood Board as President, Executive Vice President,Treasurer, Trustee, and Membership Chair. Helen served on the Temple By-Laws Committee and the Oneg Shabbat Committee. Helen also founded the Sisterhood Book Bag. She became Temple Shalom’s first historian in 1989. She has authored two pamphlets, “Temple Shalom: A Brief History” and “The Jewish Presence in Naples.” Both give a first-person view of Jewish history in Collier County. As Social Action Chair, Helen was the Sisterhood’s representative on the the Women’s Network for Change and the Collier County Anti-Discrimination Coalition. We won a WRJ OR-AMI Award for the forum she organized on “The Separation of Church and State.”
Barbara Druckman Among her many other positions, Helen was the Temple Shalom representative for “Mosaic— A Celebration of 500 Years of Jews in Florida” and she served on the Women of Reform Judaism’s National Board from 1998 to 2002. Helen and Joseph were very involved in the development of Naples beginning in 1959 and were among the first Jewish families to the Naples area. There are pictures of Helen and Joseph in the Jewish Museum in Miami Beach and The Jewish Historical Society of Southwest Florida has Helen’s oral history on film. When asked what she feels has contributed to her longevity, Helen responded, “I had a grandfather that lived to the age of 92 and two grandmothers who lived into their late 80s. So there is longevity on both sides. Better food probably had something to do with it. I had Jewish grandmothers who made good Jewish food. My husband pushed me to do things and keep busy. I was in business with my husband when we came here (to Naples) and we traveled a lot to Europe.” In 1987, Helen started the Joseph S. Weinfeld Faculty Development Fund in memory of her husband who started the Religious School.
