CLERGY MESSAGE
Rabbi
Adam F. Miller
While many phrases gained popularity during the pandemic, “Where’s your hand sanitizer?” “Sorry, all my good masks are in the laundry,” “Do you have toilet paper?” there was an old saying that I heard more in the last seven months than ever before, “People plan, and God laughs.” On the one hand, what else could we say? No one anticipated this situation. Many of us faced the reality of changing our plans, and our expectations when faced with circumstances far beyond our control. Travel plans made years in advance were shelved, weddings delayed, or family events moved to Zoom. “People plan, and God laughs,” gives us a temporary reaction and way to express our lack of power. But, it does not remove the sting felt by those who made emotional investments and now have to face an unknown path forward. When Jennifer and I first came to Temple Shalom, in January of 2010, we attended Shabbat services as part of my interview process. Only two years old, Jonah and Gabriel made the trip that weekend, too. During the service, Jennifer and I looked at each other and realized that we found the answer we had been seeking. Temple Shalom was a congregation and community where we could see ourselves in ten or eleven years, celebrating the b’nei mitzvah of our children. Now, like many others, our vision is being delayed as we postponed Jonah and Gabriel’s b’nei mitzvah from November 2020 until November 2021. Truth be told, the adage always struck me as incomplete. It is a statement about the current situation - our plans have been changed by circumstances out of our control. It is missing what comes next. We pick ourselves up, metaphorically speaking, and figure out where we go from here. We figure out what matters, and we adapt! That’s the story of our people, and it’s the message championed by Rabbi Harold Kushner. The question is not “Why bad things happen?” but rather “When bad things happen…” When we face a major challenge, how will we respond? We turn to our family, our friends and our community – as we have through the use of technology. We find creative ways to change a problem into an opportunity – having guests Zoom in for simchas from miles away and teachers from across the world inspire our congregation. We work to change the parameters and find solutions, choosing to postpone events where we want people to be together until a time when that is again safe for us to accomplish. Most importantly, we don’t give up. Instead we say, “l’chayim” and celebrate life by remaining determined to overcome the obstacles before us. For all of those who changed their plans, altered their lives, or experienced lost expectations during this pandemic, may the joy that we delayed be even sweeter when we finally reach those moments we are waiting for. L’Shalom, Rabbi Adam F. Miller

CLERGY MESSAGE
Director of Lifelong Learing Rabbi Ariel Boxman Our students at Temple Shalom Preschool are busy preparing for Thanksgiving. While we spend extra time around Thanksgiving thinking about all the wonderful blessings in our lives, here at Temple Shalom Preschool, we practice gratitude each and every day. As part of our morning routines, students at Temple Shalom Preschool share what they are thankful for. In reflecting on our blessings and naming them out loud, we get into the habit of noticing the mundane. Students in our school have started to take notice of all the blessings they experience in a day. Whether it be seeing a rainbow, eating a donut or getting to be line leader, students are finding moments of gratitude in every, single day. As a new director of the preschool, I too have so much to be grateful for. I am especially grateful for the opportunity to work with such a talented and dedicated staff. Our teachers are not only wonderful at instructing and inspiring young minds, they do so with warmth and kindness. Through hugs, cuddles and words of encouragement, our teachers make each child feel safe, welcome and loved. I am also grateful for the families who have enrolled their children and entrusted us with the great task of caring for their most precious gifts. We do not take this responsibility lightly and we are grateful for the opportunity to serve the families in our school community. Finally, I am grateful for the chance to work with our beautiful, bright and sweet children. There is nothing better than being able to work in a place where children come to play and learn. Their laughter, smiles and genuine sense of happiness are the greatest reminders of God’s presence in this world. What a blessing it is to serve Temple Shalom in this capacity! On this Thanksgiving, I pray for all of us to be blessed with the gift of gratitude. As we take notice of our blessings, we realize all the good in our lives. May we be blessed with health, happiness and above all, peace! Happy Thanksgiving! Rabbi Ariel Boxman
We thank the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples for their generous support!

LEADERSHIP MESSAGE
Executive Director Deborah R. Fidel
This year has presented all sorts of new challenges as well as opportunities for us at Temple Shalom. There are so many questions to which we simply do not have answers yet. As the Executive Director, my job is to worry about everything! Each rainstorm gives me nightmares about roof leaks. Every news story about COVID causes me to revisit our protocols and procedures in my mind - is there anything more we can do to keep our staff, visitors and children safe? How can we best stay connected to each other? What more can we do to help you find spiritual nourishment in a virtual space?
amount is the average cost per member unit to operate our synagogue. The Finance Committee and Board of Directors have determined that it costs $1250 per person to provide the programs and services our congregants expect. We encourage each member to contribute what they can, knowing that some cannot reach that level and others are willing to contribute in excess of that amount. In fact, 57% of our members pay less than the sustaining amount
There is one question I can answer without hesitation: Will Temple Shalom be ok? Will we be here for you and our community next year and the year after, when this is all over and life returns to normal? The answer is a resounding YES!
What about program fees – don’t they cover program costs? Not always. For example, the fees for YESH (formerly known as the Religious School) will continue to be subsidized by the operating fund in order to make Jewish education within reach for all families. These fees constitute 5% of our budget.
But that doesn’t mean that I don’t worry about bumps on the road along the way. Many of you have asked me, “How are we faring financially in these uncertain times?” We are definitely tightening our belts, and we may have to try a little harder to raise the funds we need, but I am cautiously optimistic that we will reach our fundraising goals this year, with your help.
We ask for contributions to Above and Beyond every year – doesn’t that make up the difference? Not entirely. Twenty-eight percent (28%) of our members support Above and Beyond. Those gifts total 19% of our annual budget. Together, L’Shalom gifts, and donations to the Above and Beyond campaign only make up 72% of operating fund income.
We are partners in keeping this community strong and vital. Accordingly, I have prepared the following fact sheet to help each member better understand why your support is so vital to our success.
Where does the rest of the money come from? Four percent (4%) of our annual budget comes from the generous support of Temple Shalom Sisterhood and the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples in the form of grants to support YESH and our preschool. The remaining 19% comes from our annual fundraiser and other donations, such as memorial plaques, tributes in honor or in memory of someone special, inscribed garden pavers, Tree of Life plaques, the Memorial Book and others.
Just how much money does it take to run the Temple? The 2020-2021 operating budget is approximately $2.1 million dollars. Is Temple Shalom financially sound? YES! Fiscal responsibility is a top priority for the Board of Trustees. Each year, the Finance Committee works closely with the staff to create a balanced budget and to anticipate extraordinary expenses. This is a challenging job, since most of our expenses are fixed and we can’t always count on increasing revenues. In light of the current health crisis and economic downturn this year, the clergy and staff have committed to a comprehensive review of all of Temple Shalom’s operations, to continue reducing expenses and creating efficiencies where possible. Why don’t L’Shalom pledges cover all of our expenses? L’Shalom gifts cover only 53% of our budget. The sustaining 6
We appreciate every gift from every member - no matter how big or small and we are very grateful to those who contribute at the sustaining level. We are especially thankful for your donations to Above and Beyond, and/or all of the other ways that you choose to support Temple Shalom, because it is those gifts that enable us to offer all of the benefits of membership at Temple Shalom, regardless of a family’s financial circumstances. If you have any further questions about our finances, I encourage you to reach out to me at dfidel@naplestemple.org. I would be happy to hear from you. L’Shalom, Deborah R. Fidel

We can each be the gift that can possibly help to heal the wound.” Feedback from groups members has been positive: “I feel better after attending this group.” “We are all at different places, but I see ourselves evolving.” “The facilitators are professionals.” “I’m comfortable that this is private. I can say whatever is on my mind.” “I’ve learned so much being in this group.” “It has been a pleasure to meet the people in this group.” For more information, please email Arline Kaplan at arkaplanphd@gmail.com or Leslie Wasserman at leshbr@aol.com. MEN’S CLUB
Men’s Club President Ron Yasbin
As Thanksgiving rapidly approaches (everything seems to happen so quickly during the pandemic), I thought it appropriate to mention volunteering as well as the needs of the community. The Men’s Club and our members have been active in supporting several of the organizations that provide food during the unprecedented need that currently exists. Hopefully, we will all continue our commitments during this time. We are proud to announce that the Men’s Club has already made an initial financial commitment to the Mitzvah Madness campaign. Our office staff is currently operating without a receptionist. When Temple Shalom reopens, and there are programs and activities once again, Men’s Club members will be stepping up to the plate to lend a hand in the office as needed. The Men’s Club will be working with Executive Director, Deborah Fidel, to coordinate the recruitment of volunteers and we will be sending out emails to all of our members asking for help from those who are willing and able. Due to the present situation, we have agreed with the clergy to delay the Men’s Club Shabbat until 2021. We want this Shabbat service to be a real celebration where more of us can gather together. In the meantime, the Sisterhood and Men’s Club Joint Luncheon will still occur (February 9). We will have to wait to see if this will be a virtual or an in-person event. However, both groups are excited about the discussion that will take place during the lunch; “Jewish Egalitarianism.” This is a topic that spans from Biblical times to the present. We are expecting outstanding presenters. Finally, the Men’s Club has renewed its financial support for the Jewish Book Festival. As part of our support, we will receive some free passes to the events. An email will be sent out later this month advising our members on how they can become eligible for one of these free passes. Happy Thanksgiving from the Men’s Club. Ron Yasbin

SISTERHOOD Sisterhood is Going Strong Can you believe it’s November? Who’s ready for Thanksgiving? I guess since we have been home since February eating everything in sight, who wants to eat turkey? To me, the thought of cooking a big meal, even if it is for two people, does not make me want to run to the store. In October, Sisterhood had a joint meeting with Hadassah on the topic of local voting issues. The League of Women Voters came to speak. Clara Ann Graham, President of the Lee County League of Women Voters, spoke of the long history of the National League of Women Voters. On August 26,1920 the 19th Amendment to the Constitution officially took effect. That’s not very long ago.
Sisterhood President
Karen Cohn
Joyce Fletcher came from the Collier League of Women Voters to talk about the six Amendments. She explained them very well, but to me it’s still confusing. There were about 40 participants and the Q & A was interesting. Thank you, Diane Schwartz, President of Collier/Lee Hadassah. Our very active Book Bag ladies had their first Zoom meeting on their own and they did a good job. The November 19 Book Bag selection is “Odessa Odessa” by Barbara Artson with Carol Flegel as facilitator. Our November program takes place on the 10th at 10:30am. It will be an Art Experience with Bronia Ichel. Bronia is a local artist and member of Temple Shalom. She will present a program about artist Jackson Pollack. Following the lecture, there will be some easy, hands-on experience. Watch for details, including a list of items for the hands-on portion, in your Sisterhood emails and make your reservation to join in the fun from home. Membership in Sisterhood is required. When making your reservation, please supply your complete name and your address. See the ad on this page for more information. L’Shalom, Karen
Jackson Pollock Abstract Aritst presented by
Bronia Ichel Tuesday, November 10 at 10:30am Local artist, Bronia Ichel, will present a program about Jackson Pollock followed by a lesson on painting in the abstract style. A list of necessary art supplies will be distributed to all attendees prior to the program. Open to Sisterhood members only To participate in this Zoom program, RSVP to Barbara Druckman at barbdruckman@gmail.com You must send an email in order to receive the Zoom link. 24
TIKKUN OLAM
Tikkun Olam Council Chair Ken Goldstein Mitzvah Madness Needs You! While we couldn’t be physically together during the High Holy Days, we were so fortunate to be able to meet virtually. We had leaders; clergy, staff, the Board, as well as volunteers, that made it all happen. I can only imagine the hard work, creativity and technology that all came together at just the right time. My thanks to everyone that shared in this experience. In many ways we have a similar situation with what to do about Mitzvah Day. Decisions had to be made about how to have a Mitzvah Day during a pandemic. Under the leadership of Marv Weisberg, a plan was created to perform Mitzvot throughout the year, creating Mitzvah Madness. During October, the highlighted projects were Knitzvah, Meals of Hope and Champions of Learning. For November and December our focus is on three projects: Grace Place - An educational, nonprofit organization helping children and families. Donations of new children’s socks and underwear are needed. Contact Bobbie Katz at gbkatz5804@aol.com Bedtime Bundles - This shelter for abused women provides pillowcases filled with comfort items for kids. Our religious school children will help stuff the pillowcases and draw messages on them. For more information on how you can help, contact Tussy Shnider at tshnider@gmail.com. School Supplies - A very special thanks to the Men’s Club for purchasing backpacks for the school supplies project. We now need to fill those backpacks with school supplies. For more information contact Rabbi Boxman at aboxman@ naplestemple.org More complete information can be found on the Mitzvah 25
Madness page on the Temple Shalom website. While we have chosen to highlight different projects throughout the year, feel free to become involved in any other Mitzvah Madness project by emailing the project’s contact. This virus has created an urgent need for all of us to step up and help. Please support any or all of these projects. It’s a mitzvah! Thanks again to the Men’s Club for their generosity and caring. Also, thanks to Marv Weisberg and the project leaders and volunteers that are making a difference right here in our community. For more information about the Tikkun Olam Council please contact me at kengoldstein@mac.com.
Mitzvah Madness in November & December! Donations of new socks and underwear in children’s sizes will be collected via a drop-off site at Temple Shalom and volunteers will deliver them to Grace Place. Bedtime Bundles are pillowcases filled with comfort items for kids that come with their mothers to the Naples Shelter for Abused Women. We are collecting school supplies to be distributed by Collier County Schools to those elementary school students in need. To read more about these programs and organizations, visit the Mitzvah Madness page on the Temple Shalom website.
