Historically Speaking - Helen Weinfeld, Temple Historian

Friday night, November 11, 2016 marks the 25th anniversary of the first Friday night service held in our current building. Twentyfive years ago, on Friday, November 1, 1991, we held the last service in our original building at 1575 Pine Ridge Road. The following week, we held the first Friday night service here, at 4630 Pine Ridge Road.

Our 50th Anniversary book marks the event in the time line:

Nov. 8, 1991: First Friday night service in the new Temple Shalom with catered Oneg Shabbat attended by 522 people. Procession led by officers, trustees, past presidents and religious school leaders accompanied Torahs for placement into the new Ark.

We are indebted to scores of people for what we have today. Many of the people involved are no longer members of Temple Shalom.

Some have gone back to their places of origin, some have moved elsewhere, some have joined other synagogues, and many are deceased.

In the lobby is a history of the Temple, which is usually open to the pages listing the donors of the land upon which the Temple is built, as well as the members of all of the committees involved in the construction and financing of the building.

First and foremost, let’s give our undying thanks to Irving Berzon and Martin Millender who oversaw the building’s construction.

They were President and Vice President during the construction period.

Next we thank the remaining land donors: Robert and Claire Beckler, Dr. William and Eileen Ertag, Martin Millender, Bruce Sherman, Sheldon and Betsy Starman, and Dr. Allen and Marla Weiss.

Thanks are due Murray Hendel, the Chair of the Steering Committee, as well as committee members Robert Beckler, Dr. William Ertag, Martin Millender, Bruce Sherman and Sandy Stone. Carole Greene was the Publicist.

Current congregants who served on committees to complete the project are Eileen Ertag, Howard Gutman, Rachael Gutman, Pauline Hendel, Stan Lipp, Elinor Locketz, Sheldon Starman, Richard Treiser, and Helen Weinfeld.

The Builders wall, which listed the financial contributors, has been dismantled, but there is a photograph of it in the 50th Anniversary book time line – 1990. In addition to the names already mentioned, others gave generously as well including Florence Hertzman, Rhoda Lown, Pearl Sugarman, Dr. Allen and Marla Weiss, the Men’s Club and Sisterhood.

There will be a special service on Friday night, November 18th, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the first Friday night service in this building. Come, and celebrate with fellow congregants, this important milestone in the history of Temple Shalom.

Rab bi A d a m M i l l e r Our sages teach that dreamers and visionaries perform acts of tzedakah that bring blessings of shalom to the individual, the community, and all of Israel. In 1962 four families dreamed of establishing a vibrant Jewish community in Collier County. Their vision led to the creation of the Jewish Community Center of Collier County, now known as Temple Shalom. We all owe those four families, as well as the many other early Jewish “pioneers” in the 1960’s and 1970’s, a tremendous debt of gratitude for their willingness to lay the foundation and groundwork for the vibrant community we have today. They could not have imagined that one day Jewish Naples would encompass multiple congregations, a Jewish Federation, Jewish Family & Community Services, or the growing population we have today.

Our Temple Historian, Helen Weinfeld, recorded and documented many of the significant moments in our Temple history. Included in her treasure trove of an archive are pictures from the construction and dedication of our current facility – a continuation of the initial dream of Temple Shalom’s founders. Completed 25 years ago, our facility serves as a center for Temple Shalom, as well as hosting countless events for Jewish organizations from across Collier county.

On November 18, 2016 we celebrate that 25th anniversary with a special Silver Anniversary Shabbat service. The entire community is invited to join us for that special night as we recognize everyone who made this milestone possible with the gifts of their time, talents, and resources over the years. In advance of that event, I offer my thanks to Helen Weinfeld and Lori Cohen for their leadership in organizing this milestone event. Thank you to Nancy and Jack Wiadro, whose generosity makes it possible for Cantor Jeff Klepper to be part of the Silver Anniversary Service.

For decades, Temple Shalom was the only synagogue in Naples, and many from our greater community contributed to its evolution and growth. We are grateful to all whose acts of tzedakah brought blessing to themselves, Temple Shalom, and the people Israel. We anticipate many contributors will attend, and we hope to learn more about everyone’s roles in establishing the Jewish community of Collier County. If you have a particular story about your role in building our campus or sanctuary, please share it with Lori Cohen (loricohen.naples@gmail.com) so that we can include it as part of our Temple Shalom history.

The dream of those first four families lives on today because we have all embraced the desire to have a strong Jewish community in Collier County. Indeed, in line with that initial vision, Temple Shalom remains a center for living Judaism, loving Judaism, and sharing Judaism. May the founders’ dream live on, as we all strive to sustain and develop the vibrant Jewish community around us.

Making B’nai Mitzvah a Family Affair

One of the questions we are frequently asked about b’nai mitzvah is how do we make it a good experience? This is often followed up with my son/daughter is resisting/questioning why we have to do this and I’m not sure if it’s worth the struggle – I want this to be positive. After confirming that this is absolutely normal and that many kids question, we also turn to a discussion on family involvement.

Family involvement in the b’nai mitzvah process is not just imperative to navigating it successfully and minimizing stress, it is critical to show your child(ren) that this experience isn’t just on them and that you are supportive and recognize the importance.

When a child joins a sports team there is a commitment made. Equipment, uniforms, practices, games, fundraising, volunteering, watching, cheering, driving. It’s all a part of the experience. We commit as families to being there, to watching, to practicing, to supporting in so many ways. The b’nai mitzvah process is a commitment too. It isn’t only about a child reaching a special moment – performing and showing what they have learned. It’s about your family reaching a special moment – seeing a child help lead their congregation in worship, chanting from our sacred Torah scroll, and embracing both their Judaism and their community publicly while continuing the chain of tradition. The most meaningful b’nai mitzvah journeys are often ones that are family journeys.

So what does family involvement mean? That depends on your family, but there are many different ways to make bar/bat mitzvah a family process.

Attending services is a part of the b’nai mitzvah journey.

Coming as a family, making it a time to be together and talking about the experience sends a message that it’s not just a requirement, but an important piece of the puzzle. The concept of becoming an adult in the Jewish community is with emphasis on the word community! This transition into adulthood is when parents, grandparents, teachers and other role models are most needed. We cannot expect our children to understand the commitment they are making if it is not modeled for them by the adults in their lives. If you do it with your child, it

demonstrates your commitment to the journey and to Judaism as well. While it can be a big time commitment to stay instead of just dropping off, there’s a powerful message you send when you do it together.

The mitzvah project is another big way to involve the whole family.

Volunteer together, choose the mitzvot to perform and bring the whole family into it, do it together. So many families look at the mitzvah project and groan – only to come back and share what a transformative experience it is. Their whole family found a cause and acted together, going well beyond the mitzvah project requirement and making it a part of their lives.

Practicing for a bar/bat mitzvah can get intense. It requires daily practice, tutoring, and more practice. It’s a serious commitment.

Unfortunately, the rest of our lives don’t stop for b’nai mitzvah and there are still other commitments that must be maintained, including school. This can lead to feeling pressured and overwhelmed for a child.

Invite input, share in the decision making together. Making it a family piece can help reduce that pressure. Listening to the recordings and practicing Torah and Haftarah portions on the way to school, while making dinner, or at a set time together can help make it enjoyable.

Instead of focusing on what it takes away from, see what it adds. Even if you don’t know Hebrew and don’t think you can help, just having an adult there to listen during practice time shows your investment as well. As an added bonus, it will give you a better understanding of the prayers and service, enhancing the experience for everyone.

Taking time together for these pieces helps create a family experience, not a performance for your b’nai mitzvah child. When the whole family is involved it elevates the experience to a new level. These are just some of the many ways you can help make b’nai mitzvah a good experience and a positive milestone.

November is a very busy month at Temple Shalom. Whether you are looking to attend services, take classes or fill your social calendar, you will have a lot to choose from. Rabbi Miller and Cantor Azu will be teaching 12 classes of Intro to Judaism starting on Wednesday November 2nd at 6:30 p.m. Enjoy our Cabaret night on Sunday November 6th at 7:00 pm with music, desserts and wine. What a great way to spend a Sunday evening! On November 13th the Catholic Jewish Dialogue of Collier County will be holding the Kristallnacht Commemoration from 2:30-4:00 at Temple Shalom. We have 2 special Friday night services this month. November 11th is Veterans Shabbat when we will honor our Veterans. On Friday, November 18th we will be celebrating 25 years since the first Friday night service in our current building. We will be honoring the many people who contributed, from the land donors, the financing and the construction of Temple Shalom, as well as the many committees involved.

Thanksgiving week is traditionally when families travel to be together. While Thanksgiving in itself is not a Jewish holiday, we celebrate it as Americans. We all have our own traditions for Thanksgiving, including the foods we prepare, blessings we might say, and sharing with other families.

In 1621 when the colonists in Plymouth, Massachusetts survived the harsh winter and were blessed with a bountiful harvest, they recalled the holiday of Sukkot and thus celebrated their first Thanksgiving. The idea of thanks is a very familiar theme in our tradition through our prayers. Every day is a chance to say thank you to God.

After Thanksgiving is when many of our snowbirds start to come down to enjoy our weather and all that our Jewish community has to offer. I would like to personally welcome all of our snowbirds back and look forward to seeing you this season at our various events.

For his Bar Mitzvah project Jacob chose to help underpriviledged children and children fighting cancer.

Andrew is the son of Mollee Cole and Eric Cole. He has 2 sisters, Lillee and Ashlee. Andrew is in the 7th grade at Oak Ridge Middle School. He enjoys playing baseball and watching the Ohio State Buckeyes play football. Andrew also likes outdoor activities such as boating, fishing and tubing. He has a strong interest in history and politics.

For his Mitzvah project, Andrew worked with veterans by serving them lunch, greeting them at the airport and spending time with them. He also collected items to send to our active soldiers overseas.

Our Back to School Nights are never typical of what our parents remember. The TSP families were able to mix and mingle, meet all of our incredible teachers, and watch the amazing Back to School video featuring our precious children and TSP staff. Jeremy Satterfield, who produces the video every year, certainly outdid himself with the most entertaining video yet. This was followed by the parents meeting with the teachers in the individual classrooms and getting an update on all the new and exciting ways we are working with the children.

In science, the children have been setting their starter seeds indoors. Once those have sprouted, they will be moved and replanted to our outdoor garden where the children will care for the carrots, beans, herbs and flowers that have sprouted. Every year, we look forward to tasting the delicious vegetables that grow in the garden.

Despite the summer-like weather here in Florida, the fall season is bringing us into a time of giving thanks and performing mitzvot for those in need. One of the ways in which TSP will fulfill this effort is through participating in our annual Trike-A-Thon which benefits St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This week long program teaches children about bicycle safety. Each day a different lesson is taught, culminating at the end of the week with preschoolers participating in the Trike-A-Thon with bicycles and helmets and rules of the road in place. Last year, through the generosity of our TSP families, we raised over $12,000.00 for this incredibly worthy cause. It is our hope that we are able to exceed last year’s donation to St. Jude.

On November 18, our TSP families will join together and celebrate Thanksgiving at our annual Thanksgiving Feast. This event brings our families together with our children performing songs that they have learned with Miss Jane and enjoying a delicious lunch featuring many family favorites.

As the director of the preschool I am thankful for our amazing parents that go above and beyond to make this preschool the best that it is. I am thankful for the amazing and highly qualified staff that works everyday with boundless energy and enthusiasm for the important job that they do. Most important of all I am thankful for our outstanding TSP Children.

Tikkun Olam Council - Social Action & Social Justice at Temple Shalom Together…We Can Repair the World

As many of you know, the Health Care Forum scheduled for September 7th was postponed. The new date is now Wednesday January 18, 2017 from 4:30 to 6:00 PM. Dr. Jaclynn Faffer, President and CEO of JFCS of Southwest Florida will moderate the discussion. We’ll be back in touch soon with more specific information. Please put this important date on your calendar.

The Tikkun Olam Council (TOC) hopes this forum will be the first of a series of forums that addresses social justice issues facing our community. The overarching theme will be “Living Our Jewish Values.”

The theme of the first forum dealing with access to health care will be “Jewish Values In Health Care.” We are considering other potential social justice issues such as:

• Poverty (lacking access to food, clean water, and shelter)

• Death Penalty

• Environment

• Access to Education We welcome your comments about these topics as well as others that may interest you.

We continue to encourage members of Temple Shalom to consider volunteering at at one of the many charitable organizations in Southwest Florida. JFCS is an outstanding organization that provides many services for seniors. Here is a brief summary of what JFCS does for seniors from their website:

Did you know....?

Judaism teaches us to be thankful every day for the blessings in our lives. It can be easy to lose sight of this when we’re so focused on everyday life. The holiday of Thanksgiving is a great reminder to take time and give thanks. While most people do not consider Thanksgiving a Jewish holiday, it most certainly can be enriched with Jewish traditions. Many people add the blessings for foods, but there are many other blessings you could add too!

One of our favorites is the blessing for seeing a Rainbow. Why? The story of Noah’s ark ends with a rainbow as a reminder of God’s promise that there would never again be a flood that would destroy the world. Today, the rainbow is more than a reminder of this promise. It’s a reminder to stop and enjoy the moment – to notice the beauty around us and not take things for granted.

When we see a rainbow, this is the blessing we recite:

Baruch Ata Adonai, Eloheinu Melekh ha’Olam zo’khair ha’brit, v’ne’eman biv’rito v’kayam b’ma’amaro.

The Above & Beyond program is our Temple’s way of sharing so that those who cannot afford the benefits of Temple membership can be included in our One Family. For those who have not yet given and can afford to, we count on you.

We hope to wrap up our campaign by the beginning of January. As of this writing, we have reached 75% of our goal. Help us meet or exceed it. We each cherish the precious moments of today, even as thoughts of the recent New Year bring with it visions of the future and the promise it holds. Many of us here at Temple Shalom have also been thinking about the future of our congregation.

We believe that each of us values the existence of a healthy, involved Reform Jewish community in Naples—that each of us values the many beautiful friendships and memories made here at Temple Shalom—and that each of us recognizes that planning ahead presents a great and important challenge, as well as significant opportunities. With these thoughts in mind, we ask you to join with us in looking to our future with optimism and excitement.

For Now and Forever, our Endowment and Planned Giving program, has been carefully and thoughtfully created to address the great and important challenge of our tomorrows. It provides many very special opportunities for each of us to be part of a future that affirms the values we treasure—while creating a legacy to honor our family’s good name.

Just before Rosh Hashanah, you received from us a letter of intent to make a planned gift. For those who choose to state their intent now to make a gift to be given in the future, or want to supplement a current gift, we have created the Legacy Society to honor your intent. By letting us know that you are helping to secure the future of the Temple in your Will or other estate planning documents, you may have the satisfaction of encouraging others to make their own gifts. And if your circumstances change, you may change your mind, as the letter of intent is not binding, not a legal obligation.

Please take time to read and examine our new brochure, For Now and Forever, prepared for and by Temple Shalom, which is available on the foyer entry table. As always, I welcome your calls and questions.

Showing We Care

Contributions to Temple Shalom funds are wonderful ways to show your appreciation of family and friends, to celebrate happy occasions and to honor the memories of loved ones. We suggest a minimum donation of chai ($18.00). With a minimum donation of chai, a notice of your gift will be sent to the honoree and mention will be published monthly in The Voice.

Operations

General Fund: Donations used for operating expenses.

Tree of Life: Each ‘Rock’ and ‘Star of David’ is a donation of $540.00; each ‘Leaf ’ is $240.00. The contribution must be received in its entirety before engraving is ordered.

Prayerbook Fund: Purchase of prayerbooks and Torah commentaries. To dedicate: Prayerbooks - $50 Torah commentary - $100 High Holy Day prayerbooks - $108 - each set

Religious School

Religious School Fund: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for Jewish learning in both Sunday and Hebrew Schools.

Scholar In Residence Endowment Fund: Supports the endowment established by Shirley and Henry Kraus. This fund enables Temple Shalom to bring visiting scholars to the Temple as an educational benefit to the membership.

Religious School Enrichment Fund: Donations augment the Religious School budget to enrich the education of our children.

The Low Family Endowment Fund: To secure the future of Temple Shalom and Reform Judaism in Southwest Florida.

Polster Religious School Scholarship Fund: To supplement Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

The Herbert & Ruth Abramson Fund: To supplement the general operating fund and to provide enrichment for Temple functions.

Ben Calmenson Fund: Donations will be used to create sponsorships to send children to attend Camp Coleman.

The Janet & Howard Solot Endowment Fund: For general charitable uses and purposes.

Endowment Fund: Donations help to secure the future, enrich the programs and provide for emergency needs of the congregation.

Rabbi Abraham Shusterman Children's Center Memorial Fund: To support our Religious School and Preschool.

Clergy/Leadership

Memorial Fund: Donations made in honor of a loved one who has passed.

Joseph S. Weinfeld Faculty Development Fund: Donations support both curriculum and teaching skill enrichment activities for Sunday and Hebrew School teachers.

Cantor Azu's Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes and general enhancement of the Cantor's work.

William Freschel Kiddush Fund: All donations help provide Kiddush Lunch each Saturday following worship services.

A $150 donation is considered to be a sponsorship to honor a special someone or occasion.

Youth Activities Fund: Donations provide financial support for children of our congregation to attend Camp Coleman, to take part in regional/national youth conventions, and to experience a summer in Israel.

Capital Reserve: Maintain and enhance buildings and grounds.

Worship

Flower Fund: Provides Bimah flowers each Shabbat. A $100.00 donation is considered to be a sponsorship in memory or in honor of a special someone or occasion.

Mitzvah Baskets Fund: A $100.00 donation will purchase several hundred dollars of food for JFCS. Dr. Philip & Shirley Gilbert Music Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement of music at Temple Shalom.

Preschool

Preschool Fund: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for the Preschool.

Preschool Enrichment Fund: The enhancement of curriculum, educational programs and experiences.

Arby Lipman Children's Library: For the purchase of children and adolescent books and magazine subscriptions, and supplies.

Jack and Charlotte Ward Family Children's Music Shelf: Audio and video music for children.

Rabbi Miller’s Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes,and general enhancement of the Rabbi's work.

Leadership Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement and enrichment of leadership programs at Temple Shalom.

Library

Rabbi James & Jane Perman Library: Books, magazine subscriptions and supplies are purchased.

Social Action

David and Lillian Thalenfeld Fund for Social Justice: Provides support for Temple participation in social justice events and activities.

Oneg Shabbat:
