Above & Beyond Letter to our Congregation Dear Friends, I just want to say thank you.

During the High Holy Days, both our president and our Rabbi stressed the importance of our Above & Beyond campaign. So many of you have responded and donated that we are almost halfway to our goal of $200,000. In a month and a half, you have contributed nearly $100,000!

I know you get it—you understand that, as is the case with most Temples, dues represent only a portion of the funds needed to provide the services and programs Temple Shalom offers our Temple family. We’re so very grateful for your support.

Preschool News

n November our minds begin to turn towards another holiday – this time a ‘secular’ holiday, Thanksgiving. We begin to plan our Thanksgiving meals, think about the people we want to celebrate with, and generally gear up for a fun time with family and friends. Indeed, there is something quite lovely about Thanksgiving and taking time to just be together. It is too easy to get caught up in daily life and not take time to enjoy our family and friends, let alone set aside time for a beautiful meal and bigger chunk of time together.

There are plenty of reasons why Thanksgiving is also a Jewish holiday. It isn’t in Dr. Anna Salomon, RJE the Torah – or anywhere in the Tanakh, but it’s still plenty Jewish! Looking at the Director of harvest aspect of the holiday, it’s remarkably similar to a lovely holiday we just Congregational Education celebrated – Sukkot. Even more, however, it’s all about gratitude. The Jewish value of gratitude – hakarot ha tov – is very important. We have a multitude of prayers of gratitude, we teach it to our children, embrace it ourselves, it’s even (sort of) one of the ten commandments (do not covet is often explained to kids especially as being thankful for what you have). Thanksgiving – thanks giving! – is all about gratitude. At the core, Thanksgiving is another Jewish holiday.

When I was growing up there was one aspect of gratitude that we always acknowledged particularly at Thanksgiving – those that aren’t with their families because they’re keeping us safe. I remember one year when my grandmother insisted that we all share something we were grateful for. As we went around the table everyone made a declaration of gratitude, but it was my grandfather’s that sticks with me to this day. A man of very few words, he said simply “I’m thankful that there are men and women giving up their Thanksgiving and lives with their families so we are safe and we can be here.” I was in fifth grade (and sure I was so terribly smart and grown up,) and made a smart remark about how if there were no stupid politicians arguing and declaring war soldiers wouldn’t be needed, then everyone would be safe and could be at home.

My grandfather patiently explained to me that no matter what I think of war, the politicians in office, and people’s intentions, it didn’t matter. The soldiers don’t get to choose the orders they’re given, the wars they want to support, the battles they want to fight. They just do it – they protect us, our country, and our world, whether they agree with the way we got there or not.

At the end of the day, my grandfather was right. There are soldiers that put their lives on the line for us every day and they deserve our respect, support, and gratitude, regardless of our feelings about where/how they are involved. This Veteran’s Day, my family will embrace our Jewish value of hakarot ha tov and send notes of thanks to soldiers who will be far away from home and family on Thanksgiving, quietly keeping us safe as we gather together in celebration.

ur Back to School Nights are never typical of what our parents remember. The TSP families were able to mix and mingle, meet all of our incredible teachers, and watch the most amazing Back to School Video featuring our precious children and TSP staff. Jeremy Satterfield, who produces the video every year, certainly outdid himself with the most entertaining video yet. This was followed by the parents meeting with the teachers in the individual classrooms and getting an update of all the new and exciting ways we are working with the children.

In science, the children have been setting their starter seeds indoors. Once those have sprouted, they will be moved and replanted to our outdoor garden where the children will care for the carrots, beans, herbs and flowers. Every year, we look forward to tasting the delicious vegetables that grow in the garden.

The fall season is here bringing us to a time of giving thanks and performing mitzvot for those in need. One way TSP will fulfill this effort is through participating in our annual Trike-A-Thon which benefits St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This week long program teaches children about bicycle safety. Each day a different lesson is taught, culminating at the end of the week when preschoolers participate in the Trike-A-Thon with bicycles and helmets and rules of the road in place. TSP is proud of the fact they have raised over $1000 annually through the generosity of our TSP families.

On November 20, our TSP families will celebrate Thanksgiving at our annual Thanksgiving Feast. This event brings families together, with our children performing songs that they have learned with Miss Jane, and enjoying a delicious lunch featuring many family favorites.

With December right around the corner, we celebrate the joyous holiday of Chanukah, commemorating the miracle of our heritage. In preparation for this, an afterschool Holiday Workshop is scheduled for December 7th where children will be given the opportunity to create special gifts for family members. These presents will be beautifully wrapped and help teach our children the joy of giving.

As the director of the preschool I am thankful for our amazing parents that go above and beyond to make this preschool the best that it is. I am thankful for the amazing and highly qualified staff that works everyday with boundless energy and enthusiasm for the important job that they do. Most important of all, I am thankful for our outstanding TSP Children.

Brett & Tara Rosenblum were married here at Temple Shalom in 2000. Both raised in Florida, they have returned to Naples from Tallahassee with their daughter Rachel and their son Jordan. Brett is a Civil Engineer working with Collier County Growth Management.

Tara formerly worked as an attorney but is currently a homemaker helping the family get reacquainted with the Naples area.

Mrs. Edythe Cohen

Edythe is a retired school teacher and a published children’s book author. She and her late husband Jay raised their three children, Debra, Ellen and Robert in Huntington, New York. Edythe loves the symphony, reading, writing, art and going to museums.

Larry Fish

Larry is retired from 50 years in the car industry. Originally from Canton, Ohio he is a HUGE Ohio State Buckeyes fan. Larry enjoys daily workout and watching NFL and NBA games with friends. Larry has two daughters and four grandchildren.

Ida Margolis

Ida and her husband Jeffrey moved to Naples from the New York area, where their daughter still resides. Ida is a semi-retired educator and author. She is very involved in many Jewish and education related organizations in the Naples area.

Donald & Roberta recently relocated to the Naples area from Boca Raton. Donald, a retired CPA/Attorney and Roberta a retired RN, are thrilled to be closer to their family Joel & Jane Waltzer and their three beautiful granddaughters.

Michael & Wendi Ulizio along with their daughter, Olivia, have joined us from the Tampa area. Wendi is currently a homemaker but previously worked in advertising. Michael is the CFO for the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Michael is originally from a small town in Pennsylvania.

Seasonal affiliates Richard and Judit have decided to retire and makes Naples and Temple Shalom their full time home! Richard is retiring from the technology sector of public relations and Judit is leaving her job as a career counselor behind in order to begin the next chapter of their life here on the beautiful beaches of SW Florida.

Alvin & Susan Wichard

Originally from Huntington, New York, Alvin is a retired contractor and Susan is a retired preschool teacher. They are enjoying the Florida lifestyle with lots of golf! Alvin is also an avid collector of antique cars and Susan enjoys mah jongg. The Wichard’s have 3 adult sons and a beautiful grandson, Philip.

Marcia Decker

Originally from the Big Apple, Marcia raised her children, Mona and Philip, in the Washington DC area. After retiring from a career in Clinical Social Work, Marcia went into private practice and did consulting work with Walter Reed Army Medical Center. She is currently an adjunct faculty member at USUHS. Marcia is interested in adult education, caring connection, social action, and chaired the committee at her previous synagogue for Single Adult Programing. Her interests also include Greek dancing, art, music and long distance driving.

Mark & Leslie Wasserman

Leslie, a retired Psychologist, and Mark, a third generation in the scrap metals business, hail from West Bloomfield, Michigan. They have two adult children, Shelly and Bradley, and 5 grandchildren. Leslie is interested in reading groups, adult education and caring connection.

Mark likes to golf, race horses and has an interest in equine stem cell research.

T

oday I want to share with you some of the major aspects of our revitalized Endowment and Planned Giving program, For Now and Forever.

Named giving for significant completed gifts. This is a change from previous thinking and practice at Temple Shalom. We are doing this because our research, locally and nationwide, has shown that many synagogues with very successful endowment programs have high levels of naming recognition. The opportunity to place their name, or that of family members, on buildings, signs, rooms, and other places often motivates people to give. Seeing a named facility or fund may also inform and motivate others to give. Naples area non-profits of various types (hospitals, gardens, theatres and concert venues) all feature prominent naming, including the names of some of our Temple members.

Possibilities for named gifts include Endowed Chairs, such as Rabbinical, Cantorial, Education and Preschool. Other opportunities include naming of facilities, such as our campus, sanctuary, chapel, social hall and many others. We hope you might consider placing your name, your family’s name, your parents’ name, etc. in front of one of these precious places or programs at Temple Shalom. Just as the “Perman Library” has become part of our vernacular, so can the “Your name… Social Hall,” as an example. We welcome your participation in designating and funding a program that meets your passion!

For those who made a designated gift in the past, our intent is to include your name in an appropriate manner. Please contact me at 239-450-8112 to discuss your interest or dreams for leaving a named legacy.

Professional Fund Adminstration. Temple Shalom’s endowment funds are now being administered by the Community Foundation of Collier County (CFCC), which offers a high level of professional service and support. Currently established are the Temple Shalom General Endowment Fund and the Abramson Endowment Fund, and everyone is invited to make gifts of any size to either. We are also in the process of receiving other named funds (minimum $10,000) from new donors, and will keep you informed as these are created. The Community Foundation provides investment and administrative functions for itself and for 55 non-profit organizations in our area. CFCC has been operating in Collier County for 30 years, has nine staff members and a strong reputation for fiscal stewardship. These services will help keep our costs to a minimum. In addition, our first $5,000 investment has already been matched 100% by the CFCC! 20

Contributions to the Temple Shalom funds are wonderful ways to show your appreciation of family and friends, to celebrate happy occasions and to honor the memories of loved ones. We suggest a minimum donation of chai ($18.00). With a minimum donation of chai, a notice of your gift will be sent to the honoree and mention will be published monthly in The Voice.

Operations

General Fund: Donations used for operating expenses.

Tree of Life: Each ‘Rock’ and ‘Star of David’ is a donation of $540.00; each ‘Leaf ’ is $240.00. The contribution must be received in its entirety before engraving is ordered.

Burn The Mortgage Fund: Established by Gerry and Pearl Sugarman to reduce payment of any existing mortgage.

Worship

Memorial Fund: Donations made in honor of a loved one who has passed.

William Freschel Kiddush Fund: All donations help provide Kiddush Lunch each Saturday following worship services.

A $150 donation is considered to be a sponsorship to honor a special someone or occasion.

Flower Fund: Provides Bimah flowers each Shabbat. A $150.00 donation is considered to be a sponsorship in memory or in honor of a special someone or occasion.

Mitzvah Baskets Fund: A $100.00 donation will purchase several hundred dollars of food for JFCS.

Religious School Fund: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for Jewish learning in both Sunday and Hebrew Schools.

Religious School Enrichment Fund: Donations augment the Religious School budget to enrich the education of our children.

Polster Religious School Scholarship Fund: To supplement Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Ben Calmenson Fund: Donations will be used to create sponsorships to send children to attend Camp Coleman.

Rabbi Abraham Shusterman Children's Center Memorial Fund: To support our Religious School and Preschool.

Sisterhood Religious School Scholarship Fund: To provide Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Joseph S. Weinfeld Faculty Development Fund: Donations support both curriculum and teaching skill enrichment activities for Sunday and Hebrew School teachers.

Youth Activities Fund: Donations provide financial support for children of our congregation to attend Camp Coleman, to take part in regional/national youth conventions, and to experience a summer in Israel.

Preschool

Preschool Fund: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for the Preschool.

Preschool Enrichment Fund: The enhancement of curriculum, educational programs and experiences.

Arby Lipman Children's Library: For the purchase of children and adolescent books and magazine subscriptions, and supplies.

Jack and Charlotte Ward Family Children's Music Shelf: Audio and video musical tapes for children.

Endowment

Endowment Fund: Donations help to secure the future, enrich the programs and provide for emergency needs of the congregation.

Scholar In-Residence Endowment Fund: Supports the endowment established by Shirley and Henry Kraus. This fund enables Temple Shalom to bring visiting scholars to the Temple as an educational benefit to the membership.

The Herbert & Ruth Abramson Fund: To supplement the general operating fund and to provide enrichment for Temple functions.

Clergy/Leadership

Rabbi Miller’s Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes,and general enhancement of the Rabbi's work.

Cantor Azu's Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes and general enhancement of the Cantor's work.

Leadership Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement and enrichment of leadership programs at Temple Shalom.

Library

Rabbi James & Jane Perman Library: Books, magazine subscriptions and supplies are purchased.

Social Action

David and Lillian Thalenfeld Fund for Social Justice: Provides support for Temple participation in social justice events and activities.

Above & Beyond I/We Care

Who wants to be a Minyan-aire?

The Temple Shalom shiva minyan group visits those in mouring to comfort and support the bereaved. Their presence has been appreciated by many members of our community during the occasion of their loss and personally rewarding to the members of the group as well.

This group of dedicated individuals is looking for additional members.

Attending a shiva and comforting the bereaved is a mitzvah.
