From Rabbi Miller The weeks move faster and faster as we enter into November, now more than a month removed from the awe and majesty of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Though the High Holy Days are now in our rear view mirror, the messages remain vital. As I talked about on Yom Kippur, this is the year we will move forward as One Family.

This is a year for building relationships. I want to hear your stories. Meet me over coffee at Temple, Starbucks, Calistoga, Panera or at your home. Sharing stories enables us to identify areas of interest in our congregation. When we are working on projects that are meaningful, we participate with more energy.

Having shared our stories, our second task is to engage with our Temple Family. As I said, you don’t have to join a committee. Find something that you are passionate about. Your engagement is important. As summer camp staff, we used to say, “Enthusiasm breeds enthusiasm.” When you are engaged and excited about activities at Temple, that energy becomes contagious for others. So I am asking you to help us replicate a global phenomenon within our Temple Family and the community.

This is our version of the ice bucket challenge…minus the ice! We are doing a #MitzvahBucketChallenge #OneFamilyChallenge. Do an activity at Temple Shalom that strengthens relationships and/or repairs our world. You could: Visit someone who is on the healing list.

Invite a new member to share their story over coffee.

Attend a Shabbat dinner.

Bring & pack food for the BOGO program.

From Cantor Azu In just a few weeks the holiday of Thanksgiving will be upon us. The past few centuries have made it difficult to sort fact from Hallmark-fiction, but this much we do know, from one account in1621: There were three days of feasting, in the company of Native Americans. The Thanksgiving holiday that we celebrate did not become a national holiday until President Abraham Lincoln declared it one in 1863. And it wasn’t until the 1941 that its date was firmly established by Congress as the fourth Thursday in November.

For some Thanksgiving is an opportunity to gather with family and eat delicious food, for others it’s a time to watch football and enjoy a day off. Here at Temple Shalom we look at the holiday as an opportunity to gather with other Collier county faith communities to celebrate out differences and pray together. For many years, Temple Shalom has been a participant of the Collier County Interfaith Thanksgiving service.

Hosted at a different house of worship each year, this year the service will be held at Temple Shalom on Sunday, November 23 at 6pm.

We live in a world that is multi-faith. And it is certainly true for our own neighborhood. Learning about other faiths in their environments, listening to various clergy share their inspirational messages, and sharing music with people of diverse backgrounds speaks to me and ignites my desire to learn more and to encourage dialogue promoting understanding and acceptance. Breaking down the stereotypes about Judaism and what we are all about helps us to forge relationships with others involved in these endeavors. We began to see each other as more similar than different, with more in common, and with many reasons to join our resources in reaching common goals. Participants in the service come from Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Bhai faith communities in Collier County.

Through the sharing of worship and song, Interfaith Programming forges and nurtures relationships and friendships, breaks down stereotypes and hatred, promotes understanding and acceptance as well as the message of peace and hope. It is my prayer that we continue to reach out and build bridges to those around us in order to nurture the bonds that unite us, and the common values we share. In this way we can truly work toward making our world a better place for all the peoples of the earth. I hope you’ll join us for this beautiful Thanksgiving service at Temple Shalom on Sunday, November 23 at 6pm. I wish you and your family a happy and healthy Thanksgiving!

This is not an exhaustive list – find your own passion and pursue it. As an example, Abbie Sladick has a passion for engaging women in intergenerational acts of tikkun olam. She channeled that passion and last month held Knitting and Knoshing to knit mitzvah dolls for children at Neve Michael Children’s Home in Israel.

Once you do it, video yourself, and share the story online. Post it on social media or email it to others, and challenge three friends to engage in their own task. At the end of each post or email include the hashtags #MitzvahBucketChallenge #OneFamilyChallenge. Our goal is to spread these acts throughout our Temple, and to spark a viral movement beyond our walls to make our Temple, our community and our world a better place.

This year embrace our sacred community, home and family that exists here at Temple Shalom. We are here for each other, to lift one another up, to share our joys, to celebrate our past, to construct our future.

To borrow from popular song lyrics from this summer, “We are love, we are one…We are how we treat each other and nothing more.” (The Alternate Routes, “Nothing More”) Invest in our Temple. Make time for our Family. Make our world holy. Amen.

The Temple Shalom Sisterhood celebrates their 50th anniversary by once again taking on the task of compiling the contact information for the entire Temple Shalom membership to be published in the new Temple directory. Every household receives a form asking you to verify your information as it appears on the form. You will also be asked to indicate if you’d like to opt out of having your contact information printed in the Temple directory.

From the Religious School Director

by Caren Plotkin For almost 17 years I have had the privilege of welcoming all of our Temple Shalom Kindergarten students up to the bimah to receive their own personal Torah at the Consecration ceremony. This marks the formal beginning of the children’s Jewish education. As the years pass by I witness many firsts with these children – Consecration, learning to read Hebrew in 3rd grade, becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, participating in the Madrichim program as a student aide, being Confirmed in 10th grade and graduating High School. Then they leave us to go to college or begin their career, and begin a new chapter in their lives. And then, they come back and it’s so, so wonderful and I am so, so proud of the incredible young adults that they have become.

Preschool on Parade

This is why I have loved what I do for nearly 30 years.

Temple Shalom Preschool opened its doors to the public on the evening of October 14th to present the award-winning documentary film, “Bullied: You’re Not Alone”. The important and timely subject of bullying was presented to teachers, legislators, victims, and the bullies themselves.

Vital information regarding this alarming trend were examined and addressed. We would like to thank Jeremy Satterfield, the Cinematographer of the film, for donating the use of the documentary; and Beth Povlow, Chair for Stand Up For Justice educator grants through the Jewish Federation of Collier County, for coordinating the facilitators for the event.

As in years past, the children of TSP participated in its yearly TrikeA-Thon to support St. Jude Children’s Hospital. The event, which will be held on November 7, not only teaches the children about bicycle safety, but, through donors’ generosity, helps desperately ill children by raising money for research and treatments. This activity instills upon TSP students the importance of ‘mitzvah’ a religious duty or obligation and one of the commandments of Jewish religious law. The Trike-A-Thon is but one of the many acts of kindness participated in throughout the school year by both children and parents alike. Through such deeds, TSP demonstrates its leadership in the community in teaching its students worthy values such as kindheartedness, empathy, understanding and responsibility which they are able to adopt and last their lifetimes.

Challah Baking in the Preschool!

Our TSP bakers made their first challahs of the school year. Each month, every student, from the Cubs through Pre-K, learn to make their own challahs to take home for Shabbat. They learn to roll three snakes, press them together and braid. By the time they graduate, they are certified TSP Bakers and can complete the entire process by themselves.

Just recently, at this year’s Simchat Torah and Consecration Service, one of my students, Zeke LaFevers, returned to the Temple. He had just graduated from boot camp as a U.S. Marine. He arrived in his crisp blue uniform, white hat in hand, looking so handsome and all grown up. When Rabbi Miller called him up to the bimah for a special blessing I was struck by a huge wave of emotion and tears of pride and joy. How did the time pass so quickly? It seemed like it was just yesterday that I met the young boy who has become a man with a commitment to fight and defend our country.

Later, during our conversation I asked Zeke about his experience at boot camp. He told me that it was the most trying and difficult thing he had ever gone through and that his spiritual connection got him through those hard times. Next, he gave me the

Sisterhood News

by Sandy Stone, Sisterhood President Sisterhood strives to have programs and special venues that appeal to our members of all ages.

On Sunday October 12, we presented, with the help of a wonderful teacher Missy Balsam, an invigorating hour of yoga. The class was held here at Temple in the social hall during Sunday School so the mothers and anyone else - that includes men-could attend. Thirteen of us met in the social hall with our mats.

It was a very successful hour. Everyone left with a very good feeling and lots of energy. We hope to see all of you next week - same time, same place. 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM Sunday morning.

By the time you read this our first program of 2014 has occurred. At the sisterhood luncheon on October 14, we learned how to protect ourselves and our surroundings during a presentation by Ray Erikson from the Naples Police Department. We got a very nice crowd and we all left knowing a lot more about what to do to help ourselves when we are in a problem situation!!

Our 2015-2017 directory is in the works. Expect a letter soon asking you to be a friend of the directory. Please help us to defray the cost of publishing this two year book. Anyone who would like to help in getting the ads that we need to make this book a success, please contact Carole Flegel or Tracey Alpert to volunteer.

Last month I told you about the mystery luncheon on Tuesday November 11 that will not be at Temple. Now the mystery has been solved! We will be lunching at the Vineyards Country Club in Naples.

According to legend, the holiday of Rosh Chodesh, which literally means “head of the month” was a reward given to the women of Israel because they refused to surrender their jewelry for the creation of the Golden Calf. Because of their righteousness, the women were exonerated from working on Rosh Chodesh. Since then Rosh Chodesh has become an especially meaningful day for Jewish women. It has blossomed into a celebration of women and femininity. Women throughout Jewish history have celebrated Rosh Chodesh by taking a break from their everyday lives and gathering together. Here, at Temple Shalom we gather together as a community to celebrate Rosh Chodesh at the beginning of the new Jewish month, joining with our foremothers as we gather to celebrate the new month and our lives as Jewish women.

Feeding the hungry is the Jewish people’s way to perform Gemilut Hasadim (acts of loving kindness) and Tikun Olam (to repair the world). Did you know that right here in Naples and the surrounding areas there are people who cannot afford to buy food?

In Judaism, giving to the poor is not viewed as a generous, magnanimous act; it is simply an act of justice and righteousness, the performance of a duty, giving the poor their due. Temple Shalom expanded on their relational Judaism to include those who are food insecure. When you go food shopping and see those weekly specials that we all know as BOGO (Buy One Get One) take advantage of the special and place the free non-perishable foodstuff in the non-disposable shopping bag that we will give to you to fill on a weekly basis. Bring the filled bag back to Temple either during the week or when you come to Shabbat services. We will then give you an empty bag to refill. Maxine and Harvey Brenner and the 7th grade religious school class have volunteered to sort and box the food for the food pantry. Remember, BOGO not only means Buy One Get One. It also means to Bring One Give One for the food pantry. Let’s make this a successful campaign to help those in our community who are food insecure. Don’t forget to get one of the empty bags during our Oneg after services and bring it back full next Friday night or during the week.

Meetings are held in the board room on select Thursdays from 5:30-6:30pm, unless noted otherwise. Newcomers and friends are always welcome. We continually learn something wonderful from being together and sharing our stories.

FOOD FOR THE NEEDY

BY PAUL M. ROSOFSKY Our Torah teaches us that when we harvest our fields we should leave the four corners

for those who otherwise would go hungry. But what do we Jews do when we are no longer an agrarian society?

We must find ways to share our bounty with the less fortunate. It is amazing that here in Collier County, one of the wealthiest counties in the country, we have people who go to bed hungry because they cannot afford food for their family.

At Temple Shalom we are in the forefront of the fight against hunger. The need is so pressing that we operate on many levels. During the High Holidays, Temple Shalom takes a collection for the Harry Chapin Food Bank. Temple has earned the honor of donating more money to the Harry Chapin Food Bank than any religious organization in our county.

For the past four years we have provided hundreds, if not thousands, of pounds of food through the Mitzvah Basket program. At each simcha, when a Mitzvah Basket is donated it is as if we allow the four corners of our fields to be a source of food for those in need. Our donated dollars allows the Harry Chapin Food Bank to purchase food transported by members of our congregation to the distribution center at the Jewish Family Services. JFS then distributes the food not only to the Jewish community but to any who are in need.

A new initiative was recently started. It is called, BOGO, BUY ONE GET ONE. When a store has a BOGO promotion, the purchaser keeps one and donates the free item.

Every Monday morning the food is taken directly from our lobby to the food pantry at the Jewish Family Services. Everyone benefits.The message of tikun olam- We at Temple Shalom are doing our part in making our county a better place.

Contributions

Contributions to Temple Shalom Showing We Care

Contributions made to the various Temple Shalom funds are wonderful ways to show your appreciation of family and friends, to celebrate happy occasions and to honor the memories of loved ones. We suggest a minimum donation of chai ($18.00). With a minimum donation of $18.00, a notice of your gifts will be sent to the honoree and mention will be published monthly in The Voice.

Operations

General Fund: Donations used for operating expenses.

Tree of Life: Each ‘Rock’ and ‘Star of David’ is a donation of $540.00; each ‘Leaf ’ is $240.00. The contribution must be received in its entirety before engraving is ordered.

Burn The Mortgage Fund: Established by Gerry and Pearl Sugarman to reduce payment of any existing mortgage.

Religious School

Religious School: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for Jewish learning in both Sunday and Hebrew Schools.

Religious School Enrichment Fund: Donations augment the Religious School budget to enrich the education of our children.

Polster Religious School Scholarship Fund: To purchase or supplement Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Ben Calmenson Fund: Donations will be used to create sponsorships to send children to attend Camp Coleman.

Rabbi Abraham Shusterman Children's Center Memorial Fund: To support our Religious School and Preschool.

Sisterhood Religious School Scholarship Fund: To provide Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Memorial Fund: Donations made in honor of a loved one who has passed.

Joseph S. Weinfeld Faculty Development Fund: Donations support both curriculum and teaching skill enrichment activities for Sunday and Hebrew School teachers.

William Freschel Kiddush Fund: All donations help provide Kiddush Lunch each Saturday following worship services.

A $150 donation is considered to be a sponsorship to honor a special someone or occasion.

Youth Activities Fund: Donations provide financial support for children of our congregation to attend Camp Coleman, to take part in regional/national youth conventions, and to experience a summer in Israel.

Prayerbook Fund: The new minimum contributions to purchase a plaque for Shabbat and High Holiday Books: $50.00 / Pentateuch & Haftarah books: $100.00 Flower Fund: Provides Bimah flowers each Shabbat. A $150.00 donation is considered to be a sponsorship in memory or in honor of a special someone or occasion.

Mitzvah Baskets: A $100.00 donation will purchase several hundred dollars of food for JFCS. Dr. Philip & Shirley Gilbert Music Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement of music at Temple Shalom.

Preschool Enrichment Fund: The enhancement of curriculum, educational programs and experiences.

Arby Lipman Children's Library: Children and adolescent books and magazine subscriptions, and supplies are purchased.

Jack and Charlotte Ward Family Children's Music Shelf: Audio and video musical tapes for children.

Endowment

Endowment Fund: Donations help to secure the future, enrich the programs and provide for emergency needs of the congregation.

Scholar In-Residence Endowment Fund: Supports the endowment established by Shirley and Henry Kraus. This fund enables Temple Shalom to bring visiting scholars to the Temple as an educational benefit to the membership.

He is president of the Marco Island (noontime) Rotary, board member of the Marco Island Historical Society and a 2013 graduate of Leadership Marco. Nancy is a retired nurse. She loves to cook and shelling. Nancy is also very passionate about such causes as feeding the hungry and the documentary “Paper Clips� and its message of tolerance of others and their beliefs.

Some of the activities that Jerome and Louisa enjoy are photography, music, quilting and sewing.

David Dembo David is originally from Roslyn, NY and moved here to Naples for Greenville, SC. He has two adult children, Matthew and Jillian.

David is self-employed in the automotive technologies industry.
