I

n a couple of weeks, I will experience a juxtaposition of events that resonates with my youth. On Sunday, May 17th, we will joyfully celebrate the Confirmation of our 10th grade class – Sarah Castro, Saige Feldman, Samantha Front, Sara Klausner, Sydney Lenchner, Zachary Tretter, Jack Van Dam, and Rachel Waltzer. Later that same afternoon, I will board a plane to lead the Temple Shalom Israel trip from May 18th through May 28th.

Confirmation and Israel have been linked in my life for many years. When I was in high school, the Confirmation class travelled to Israel the summer after Confirmation. Until 1991, when my class’ plans were altered by the first Gulf War with Iraq. Scud missiles threatened Tel Aviv, and many youth trips to Israel were cancelled.

While I did travel to Israel the next summer, that postponement was quite disappointing. My congregation’s high school and Confirmation program instilled in me a sense of excitement for Israel. I was Adam Miller thrilled to see Israel, and be joined there by my class. Confirmation had given us an identity, a sense of family, a connection with our congregation, and a feeling of belonging within the Jewish people. Being in Israel together would have only strengthened those connections.

Confirmation remains an important tool for enabling our children to establish a strong sense of Jewish identity, and experiencing the value of community. While a bar/bat mitzvah student stands alone before family and friends, each Confirmand is part of a class. That class develops bonds and relationships that give students a sense of family and belonging within a synagogue. This year’s class coalesced around the theme of friendship – recognizing that being part of the Jewish community is an extension of your own family. And our students feel like they are all part of our One Family at Temple Shalom.

I hope that you will join us on May 17th to celebrate and share in the simcha of our eight students as they confirm their place in the Jewish community. May the sense of family, love, and community that they experience at Temple Shalom inspire them to remain active Jewishly, secure in their Jewish identities, and an inspiration to others. Someday, I hope to take these students, and others who have been part of our Temple Family, with me on my future trips to Israel. One year, may we meet in Jerusalem!

S

havuot is a festival of beginnings. It marks the occasion at which the Israelites received Torah at Sinai and the subsequent beginning of our journey into Jewish learning and discovery. Shavuot falls on the eve of summer and in biblical times marked the harvesting of wheat and the gathering of the first fruits. In the Reform movement (as well as a few Conservative and Reconstructionist synagogues), Shavuot is traditionally celebrated alongside a special ceremony in which teenagers commit to a life of Jewish learning. Although boys and girls are considered to be spiritual adults by age 13, they are better prepared at age 16 or 17 to make an emotional and intellectual commitment to Judaism. On Shavuot, teenagers often prepare to make individual and group declarations of their commitment to the Jewish people. This ritual is their Confirmation, a positive assertion of dedication and loyalty.

Why do we celebrate Confirmation in conjunction with Shavuot? When the Confirmation class stands before the open ark, it is reminiscent of the way that the Israelites stood at Mount Sinai for the giving of Torah. Just as the Israelites became a people when they stood at Sinai, the Confirmation class celebrates the strong adult community they have become over their many years of study. We received Torah on Shavuot.

Our students do the same as they formally bring Torah into adulthood. In many congregations, including ours, Confirmation happens after the end of the tenth grade year

I remind our Bar and Bat Mitzvah students that each time we study Torah, we learn something different. The words of the Torah remain the same, but our perspective constantly evolves. The Confirmation students understand Torah differently than they did when they became Bar or Bat Mitzvah, and their perception will continually change in their lives as Jewish adults.

At 13, the B’nei Mitzvah preparation process offers children an introduction to Torah and Mitzvot on an individual basis. When they are confirmed a few years later, they have the opportunity to collaborate with their peers. It is about experiencing tradition together with other Jews. It is, above all, a foray into building and becoming part of a larger Jewish community, something we hope will continue as they go off to college and begin their adult Jewish lives.

Temple Shalom’s Confirmation service will take place on Sunday, May 17 at 10am. Please join us as we celebrate and learn from our teens.

My name is Sam Solomon. My parents are Jessica Horowitz and Eric Solomon.

I have an older brother, Harry, who is 15. I attend Gulf View Middle School and my favorite sports are lacrosse and archery. I like to read and I also like to volunteer at the Humane Society.

My name is Jessica Schwartz. My parents are Melanie and Stephen. I have two brothers, Reid(10) and Oliver(5) and a sister, Eliza (22 months). I attend Pine Ridge Middle School.

My favorite sports are swimming and tennis. I enjoy volunteering for the Kitten and Cat rescue and adoption organization, taking art classes and playing outside with my brothers.

N

ow that we are approaching the last quarter of the school year, we are taking registrations for the 2015-2016 school year. Those students who are currently enrolled are given first opportunity to sign up for the upcoming year. Enrollment is open to the general public and we are almost full to capacity. Providing a nurturing, caring, academically challenging program, state-ofthe art equipment, and experienced, educated teachers, Temple Shalom Preschool looks forward to continued success for the upcoming school year. Those interested in learning more are invited to call the preschool office (239)455-3227 and ask for Gloria, Office Manager or Seyla Cohen, Director to receive information or set up a tour.

There’s nothing like tradition and holidays to let us know where in the year we are. Children thrive on structure and repetition so it’s no wonder that the festivals we celebrate each year create lasting memories. Such rituals can be started at an early age and that is our intention at Temple Shalom Preschool.

Purim, with its wonderful stories and custom of dressing in costume, is always one of the favorites and this year was no different. Miss Jane treated us to her wonderful songs and the children paraded and enjoyed the festive day.

On Passover, another much-loved celebration, children become familiar with the different foods offered and the meaning behind their presentation. As in many Jewish holidays, the menu plays an important part. We celebrated Passover with our TSP families at our annual Passover Seder where traditional dishes were savored. In our Storyland, The Story of Moses is told and acted out on stage; in art class, traditional Seder plates are crafted; in music, customary songs sung and danced to; and in our classrooms, creative haggadahs constructed; all making for a fun learning experience, especially for our little ones.

As these children progress through Temple Shalom Preschool year after year, these customs are repeated, forming a constant reminder of where they come from and instilling in them a sense of belonging. Those students who are not of the Jewish faith are exposed to practices that other religions follow, broadening their horizons.

n June 8 fabulous summer fun officially will begin at both Camp Shalom and Camp Einstein. Camp Shalom is a fun-filled 7 week summer camp program for children ages two through four and Camp Einstein is an outstanding academic camp for children five through eight years old. Both programs have been developed with children’s needs and interests in mind, offering a welcoming place for little ones to come and enjoy the hot Naples summer. There’s something to peak everyone’s interest.

Campers participates in Water Play, Dancing, Arts and Crafts, Performing Arts, Foreign Language, Technology, Science Experiments and Music. Returning campers look forward to exciting experiences and new campers were surprised by the treat in store for them. Each camp offers a seven week program with a new theme each week.

Children attending Camp Shalom have fun sharing a special breakfast with their dads, performing Science experiments in our Science Lab, celebrating our planet and learning all about recycling, creating magnificent art pieces, cooking, gardening and learning about healthy eating as well as mixing, measuring and enjoying yummy goodies! and creating a musical showcase with our amazing Miss Jane!

Camp Einstein’s children use their creative minds and writing skills to develop their own play script, learn to become an entrepreneur, broadcast a weather report, illustrate their own book, and create their own artistic masterpieces, and learning about technology through Legos!

Now that’s what we call having a blast at Camp. Don’t you wish you were part of our amazing TSP camp family!

I

t’s hard to believe that this will be my last Voice article after 17 years. I have mixed feelings of excitement and sadness as I realize that my career at Temple Shalom is coming to a close. Excitement to see where my journey will take me and sadness to say good-bye to the students, the staff, the families that I’ve grown to love. Thankfully, I will still be in Naples and I look forward to staying in touch with everyone.

I am truly overwhelmed with gratitude for the beautiful tribute on April 17th. I know that a lot of work and preparation went into this evening to make it so special. Thank you to Rabbi Miller, Cantor Azu, Peter Lewis and the choir for a beautiful service and all of my favorite music selections. A very special thank you to Bobbie Katz and my wonderful office assistant, Mary Flores, for all of the work that was put into the evening to make it perfect. A big thank you to Debbe Faunce, the Oneg coordinator, Mary Beth Strom for the fabulous decorations and all of the Sisterhood women and parents who baked the incredible desserts. I especially want to thank those who participated and who came to celebrate with me. I was so deeply touched by the beautiful words that were spoken and sung on my behalf, and Caren Plotkin, was brought to tears when I looked out into the packed congregation and saw Religious School Director so many of my students, past and present.

As I look over the past 17 years that I’ve spent at Temple Shalom, I am filled with a tremendous sense of gratitude and awe. Here are just a few things that I’ve realized: I have worked with five Rabbis: Rabbis Perman, Sherman, Bloom, Perman again, Weiss and Miller. I have worked with eight boards of trustees, trained staff for 340 teaching positions and have seen over 250 students become Bar or Bat Mitzvah, and was included on the ground floor of the planning and building of our new school wing.

Here’s what I know….

I am so very grateful. Grateful that I had a mentor like Jim Perman, who taught me some of the most important lessons of my life. He taught me to trust that sometimes the path in front of us is actually the one to take. He told me to trust him when he put my family together with other families to form a Havurah. Today my Havurah of 16 years are not just friends, we are each other’s family. We share the good times and the sad times, the challenging times and the celebrations of one another. Most important, Jim Perman taught me to embrace my daughter Shelli with grace and understanding as she fought to survive cancer. He was there for us every step of the way. For that I am eternally grateful.

I am appreciative. Appreciative that for the past 17 years I have been part of an incredible team of professionals. Thank you, Lori, John, Jo and Susan, and Maxine, Randi, Jeanette, Victor, Rick, Seyla, Gloria and Mary. We’re not just a team, we are friends who share each other’s lives. We support each other, we laugh together, we celebrate and we care about each other. My deepest thanks to Rabbi Miller and Cantor Azu for the time we have worked together. Rabbi, I know you will continue to guide our congregation with eloquence and poise.

Cantor Azu, your gift of music fills our hearts and nourishes our souls. May you continue to guide and teach our children the beauty of their Jewish identities through song.

I am privileged. I am privileged to know and work with such an esteemed group of teachers. You have been a loyal, committed and dedicated staff, and more importantly, my friends. I have such deep respect for each of you. I have loved my work because of you and I feel privileged to work for you. I have learned from you, laughed with you, cried with you and grown with you.

I am enlightened. Enlightened by our children. I adore their innocence and their unconditional love. I’m in awe of their wonder and curiousness and appreciate that they practice the “KISS” rule to “Keep It Simple Sweethearts” without even knowing it. They are our future, they are our hope.

I am honored. Honored to have had the opportunity to work with our Sisterhood and Men’s Club for 17 years. I continue to learn from our Sisterhood matriarchs: Sandy, Helen and Evelyn. I appreciate the dedication and drive that our Men’s Club has for our Temple. Both of these groups are paving the way for our children’s Jewish future. How fortunate we are to have such incredible role models.

And most importantly, I am strengthened and humbled. I am strengthened and humbled by my family. My Ron, my best friend and the love of my life, who is there to support me every step of the way. He listens to me rant and makes me giggle and entertains me. He brings profound understanding to difficult matters and is everyone’s loyal friend. He is a man of integrity and humility and has been an incredible role model and father to our daughters. Melissa is my spirited sunshine, my best cheerleader. She is wise beyond her years, with a soul and a heart that touches everyone deeply. She has taught me to love and live life, and to stay in the moment - and to trust that things will work out as they are supposed to. I admire her drive, her strength and commitment and I know that she is making a real difference in this world.

In closing, it is with overwhelming appreciation and gratefulness that I thank you, my congregation, my friends, my family for this beautiful display of love and honor. I’m not sure where this next journey will take me, but what I know for sure is that my journey isn’t over yet and I am filled with gratitude for having had the opportunity to fulfill two of my passions: working with children and sharing my love of Judaism.

was installed as President of Sisterhood at our luncheon on April 14th, and I’d like to thank you all for the confidence you have shown in me by entrusting me with this position. I know that Temple Shalom would not be what it is without Sisterhood, and that Sisterhood would not be possible without the true hard work and dedication of many Officers, Trustees, Volunteers and Members who have come before me. I hope to do well by you and them, and to help Sisterhood get even better (if possible!).

Thanks so much to Past President Sandy Stone for her unflagging efforts on Sisterhood’s behalf, and for agreeing to “switch places” with me and assume the role of Executive V.P. of Sisterhood now. Sandy would have been on Sisterhood Board anyway as Immediate Past President, but having her as Executive V.P. gives me a little extra confidence since I am still relatively new to all this. Thanks as well to Nancy Brother and her nominating committee for making sure that I have a very “deep bench” -- the Board Members I serve with are smart, driven, talented and creative, and I hope we will do wonderful things together for the next two years.

My first priority as I start this job is to get to know all of you better! I want to hear what you think about Sisterhood: If you have not been involved lately, why not? What would you like us to do that we haven’t been doing? If you have been involved, thank you, and what can we be doing better? How? To help educate myself so I can serve Sisterhood better, I am going to try to meet with small groups of you so I can hear what you have to say. Over the next few months, all Sisterhood members will receive an invitation to meet me for coffee or lunch – I hope you can give me some of your time so we can, together, begin to make a success of Sisterhood’s next 50 years.

Showing We Care

Contributions made to the various Temple Shalom funds are wonderful ways to show your appreciation of family and friends, to celebrate happy occasions and to honor the memories of loved ones. We suggest a minimum donation of chai ($18.00). With a minimum donation of $18.00, a notice of your gifts will be sent to the honoree and mention will be published monthly in The Voice.

Operations

General Fund: Donations used for operating expenses.

Tree of Life: Each ‘Rock’ and ‘Star of David’ is a donation of $540.00; each ‘Leaf ’ is $240.00. The contribution must be received in its entirety before engraving is ordered.

Burn The Mortgage Fund: Established by Gerry and Pearl Sugarman to reduce payment of any existing mortgage.

Worship

Memorial Fund: Donations made in honor of a loved one who has passed.

William Freschel Kiddush Fund: All donations help provide Kiddush Lunch each Saturday following worship services.

A $150 donation is considered to be a sponsorship to honor a special someone or occasion.

Prayerbook Fund: The new minimum contributions to purchase a plaque for Shabbat and High Holiday Books: $50.00 / Pentateuch & Haftarah books: $100.00 Flower Fund: Provides Bimah flowers each Shabbat. A $150.00 donation is considered to be a sponsorship in memory or in honor of a special someone or occasion.

Mitzvah Baskets: A $100.00 donation will purchase several hundred dollars of food for JFCS.

Arby Lipman Children's Library: Children and adolescent books and magazine subscriptions, and supplies are purchased.

Dr. Philip & Shirley Gilbert Music Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement of music at Temple Shalom.

Jack and Charlotte Ward Family Children's Music Shelf: Audio and video musical tapes for children.

Religious School

Religious School: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for Jewish learning in both Sunday and Hebrew Schools.

Religious School Enrichment Fund: Donations augment the Religious School budget to enrich the education of our children.

Polster Religious School Scholarship Fund: To purchase or supplement Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Ben Calmenson Fund: Donations will be used to create sponsorships to send children to attend Camp Coleman.

Rabbi Abraham Shusterman Children's Center Memorial Fund: To support our Religious School and Preschool.

Sisterhood Religious School Scholarship Fund: To provide Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Joseph S. Weinfeld Faculty Development Fund: Donations support both curriculum and teaching skill enrichment activities for Sunday and Hebrew School teachers.

Youth Activities Fund: Donations provide financial support for children of our congregation to attend Camp Coleman, to take part in regional/national youth conventions, and to experience a summer in Israel.

Preschool

Preschool Fund: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for the Preschool.

Preschool Enrichment Fund: The enhancement of curriculum, educational programs and experiences.

Endowment

Endowment Fund: Donations help to secure the future, enrich the programs and provide for emergency needs of the congregation.

Scholar In-Residence Endowment Fund: Supports the endowment established by Shirley and Henry Kraus. This fund enables Temple Shalom to bring visiting scholars to the Temple as an educational benefit to the membership.

The Herbert & Ruth Abramson Fund: To supplement the general operating fund and to provide enrichment for Temple functions.

Clergy/Leadership

Rabbi Miller’s Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes,and general enhancement of the Rabbi's work.

Cantor Azu's Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes, and general enhancement of the Cantor's work.

Leadership Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement and enrichment of leadership programs at Temple Shalom.

Library

Ronald McDonald House is very glad to receive all the pop tops that Sisterhood has been bringing them. Please continue to bring your pop tops to Temple. Place them in the Sisterhood mailbox in the office. From there they are sent to the Ronald McDonald House. The proceeds from recycling the pop tops will help the children staying there. HAVURAH CLUSTERS ARE FRIENDSHIP GROUPS

As part of the One Family initiative, Temple Shalom encourages small groups of congregants to gather together for Shabbat dinners.

They provide an opportunity to meet new friends, form attachments and share life stories.

Temple Shalom sponsors Havurot programs allowing both old and new members to meet and form friendships with smaller groups of congregants.

Now that Passover is over, we’d like to continue with these home Shabbat dinners on Friday evenings.
