A

tale is told about a disciple of the Ba’al Shem Tov, a renowned scholar, who vanished one day from his small town.

When the rabbi missed the morning prayer service, people began asking, “Where’s rabbi?” Concerned, they went to his house, where they found no one to be home. Then someone suggested that perhaps he was at the hospital visiting the sick, but again he could not be found. Next the school, but he was not there. Confounded, the leaders of the town called an emergency meeting to address this great crisis. Just as they called the meeting to order, a woman called out, “Look! There is the rabbi!” The crowd turned to see the rabbi walking on the road into town. Rushing to his side, they asked, “What happened? Are you okay? Where were you?” The rabbi smiled and said, “I was practicing what I preach when quotes the Sages, ‘Who is wise? One who learns from everyone.’ I have been studying with my colleague in the town next door. What did I miss?”

You are not experiencing déjà vu if that story sounds familiar. Two years ago, I shared that teaching to introduce the first half of my sabbatical. It is important for one to practice what one preaches – especially when it comes to continuing one’s personal and professional development. Toward that end I have invested my time to strengthen my skillset and enhance my work as a rabbi. Those experiences included being part of the STAR PEER program on synagogue leadership, attending workshops offered through the CCAR on worship, participating in the Executive Certificate for Religious Fundraising program presented by the Lake Family Institute on Faith & Giving, and most recently completing the Brickner Fellowship to hone my skills as an effective leader for social justice.

With the blessing of our Temple Shalom leadership, I received six months of sabbatical time to further my development and growth. We planned this sabbatical for our slowest time of the year, spread over two summers. The first three months took place during the summer of 2017. My experiences included a weeklong program with the Institute on Jewish Spirituality, two seminars at Harvard University, attending the Disney Leadership Institute, and participating in a thirty-day yoga challenge.

Those experiences led to the creation of our Wise Aging program, influenced my inclusion of mindfulness practices at our worship services, and enhanced my skills as the rabbi of our congregation.

The second half of my studies was originally scheduled for last summer. However, given the needs of the congregation and the arrival of our new Executive Director, Deborah Fidel, I postponed my sabbatical. That transition went quite smoothly, and our congregation benefited tremendously from Deborah’s expertise and leadership. Now, I am excited to complete the second half of my sabbatical. My focus this summer will be on leadership and justice. I will be attending a weeklong leadership development program, traveling the civil rights trail, learning from other colleagues, and exploring further my own spirituality.

During my sabbatical, I know that the question will be asked, “Where’s rabbi?” The answer is that I will be following the teaching of the Sages and pursuing wisdom from many different sources. At the same time, Temple Shalom will remain in the capable hands of our wonderful senior staff team and lay leadership. Cantor Donna Azu, Deborah Fidel and Debra Antzis, our Temple President, will maintain the spiritual life, learning, and day to day functions of the congregation. Cantor Azu and Debra Antzis assembled a sabbatical team to make sure that all aspects of the congregation will be excellently managed. I trust them, and know we will continue along our positive trajectory.

I look forward to returning in September and sharing some of my experiences with the congregation. Together we will learn, gain wisdom, and clarify our vision for Temple Shalom, our one family with many connections.

CANTOR’S MESSAGE

O

ne of the most beautiful aspects of Torah is that connects to each person differently and depending on your life circumstances and experiences, you may not interpret what you’re currently reading the same as ten years prior or even ten years later. I had the pleasure of teaching Di Karpman, Sandy Schuman and Gloria Mellman as they prepared and celebrated their Bat Mitzvah’s together on March 2, 2019. The portion that week was Vayakhel and each one of them was able to relate to that portion in a different, unique and beautiful way. Below are three small excerpts of the speeches they shared with our community.

Sandy Schuman I am proud to say I am the oldest of these three terrific and wonderful women. I was brought up in an orthodox home.

When my older brother started Hebrew school, I wanted to go as well even though I knew that I was not going to become a Bat Mitzvah. The boys were taught by the Rabbi and the girls were taught by the Rabbi’s wife, Mrs. Rabbi. We went to a shul where the men and women sat separately. A lace curtain ran down the length of the shul separating the men from the women and across the front of the women’s section. I felt completely disconnected from the service and from our Jewish religion. I always had Yiddishkite but not true religion.

It was not until Len and I were married almost twenty years ago, by Reform Rabbi Daniel Cohen, and we joined his Reform synagogue, Temple Shaary Tefilo-Israel in New Jersey, that I found the spirituality in Judaism. Many times, I would sit during services and close my prayer book and let the wonderful feeling of the warmth and music wash over me. It was then that I knew I wanted to become a Bat Mitzvah and make a deeper connection to Judaism. It took me over 55 years since my brother’s Bar Mitzvah, to realize my personal dream. And here I am. I guess you CAN teach an old dog new tricks, especially if she is both young at heart and full of Jewish spirit and I guess today, I am a man? But, I am always a woman.

My Torah portion today, deals with the building of the Mishkan or tabernacle. Moses chooses two men to organize and manage the building of this enormous project: Bezalel and Oholiab. God says that “each person whose heart is so moved” will give. This is the foundation of Tikkun Olam. Working together is one important way to build a sense of community, which is mentioned many times in this parashat Vayak’heil. Working together makes the whole better than the individual.

The practice of Tzedakah and Tikkun Olam are very similar and comes in all forms. It is the true nature of people, of all people, but especially Jewish people, to reach out and help and do whatever they can when others are in need or in trouble.

I would like to thank my husband, Len for his tremendous support and love through my journey to become a Bat Mitzvah, and for the many hours of him listening to me practice and practice and practice. The tallit I wear today is the tallit under which we were married. I would like to thank Rabbi Miller for his spiritual support. Many thanks to Cantor Azu for her patience and guidance. To Gloria and Di, there will always be a bond and sisterhood between us for travelling this road together. I could not have asked for two better women with which to make this journey.

I leave you with the following thoughts: First, learn to love the work you do – once you learn to do so you never have to work a day in your life.

Second, learn to love to learn – you will have a life of complete wonderment.

Third, learn to love to give – you will achieve a life of complete fullness.

Di K arpman My introduction to Judaism took place on a kibbutz in the Jordan Valley in Israel. We lived according to the rhythms of the seasons and the traditions of ancient times. On Friday nights, we would gather in the communal dining room, most of the men in white collared shirts and women in skirts and white tops looking so different from the dark blue work day attire, to share the Shabbat meal served family style rather than the cafeteria or buffet style used for all other meals. Shabbat was different. It was time to pause, breathe, enjoy the company of others and replenish ourselves.

When Andy and I moved to the States, we agreed that we both really wanted to preserve the feeling of Shabbat, remembering 4

how to ‘push the pause button’ on our weeks. We worked hard over the years to carve out that space and balance it with a busy life working, raising a family and caring for aging parents and friends. There were many missed movie nights, late arrivals at sleep overs and other missed social events for our kids. But there were also many Shabbat dinners with friends and lessons on shared responsibilities and instilling of traditions of candle lighting and saying the blessings which we still do whenever we are together and sometimes, via Skype, when we are far apart. We have found that if we create the space to BE, set aside time that is separate from our usual activities, we can welcome the peace of Shabbat and take time to reflect, refuel and replenish, ready for the week to come.

My journey to this day has included years of learning about Judaism through classes and reading, sharing with Andy’s extended family through the gamut of life cycle events and illnesses, guiding my own children through their journeys as Jews in a largely non-Jewish community, and keeping a Jewish home where we celebrated the holidays with friends and family around our table. It was only when we came here to Temple Shalom however, that I felt the acceptance of the community and my readiness to take on the challenge of becoming Bat Mitzvah. I am thankful that it has been with Sandy and Gloria, my partners in learning, with whom I will share a forever bond after the last 18 months of sometimes painful but often hilarious weekly meetings. Many thanks also to Cantor Azu for her patience, positivity and encouragement. I have been overwhelmed by the support and encouragement of family, friends and Temple members. My heartfelt thanks to all of you.

My Torah portion talks about the seven branched menorah made of pure gold. What is special about this portion we find the branches, cups and petals of the menorah are compared to those of an almond tree. Almond trees are the first trees to flower in Israel each year when winter turns towards spring. What is unusual about these trees is their flowers appear before any leaves sprout on their branches. Upon learning this, I said to myself this must mean something. A tree that brings forth it’s most beautiful piece before it’s foundation. How can this apply to my life, our lives? Then I thought coming together celebrating our traditions, keeping them alive in our homes, in our everyday lives and temple. These are our flowers that bring beauty to our lives. Every Jewish holiday has traditions that are symbolic of hope, love, unity, gratitude, but also remembering loss, struggle and courage. These are the flowers that come first and what follows is the growth as a family, community and love for all these traditions.

It is also interesting that the menorah is compared to a flowering tree. We refer to trees very often in our Jewish traditions. A tree symbolizes hope and provides shelter, food and tranquility. We could say that as a people we are the many branches of a tree. With each branch there is hope for future growth and the continuation of beauty. We see references to the tree during Tu b’Shvat and our Torah is often called the Tree of Life. Each portion of the Torah offers something different. Each time we read a portion of the Torah we get something different each time. We grow each time we gain wisdom from its readings.

Gloria Mellman Becoming a Bat Mitzvah brings tremendous joy to my life and has great meaning to me. I chose my Jewish life many years ago and it began when I met my husband Mark. You may think, oh she fell in love and that caused her to make this change.

However, this decision did not happen overnight. I remember asking my husband before we were married, “Mark, tell me what’s it like to be a Jew or Jewish? I want to know.” That was my first branch and so many more followed and with each one I learned, and I became fulfilled with this faith, my faith. Once I had my children, I knew how I wanted them raised in a Jewish home. My formal conversion did not happen until my children were older. I waited because I was still on a journey of learning and I wanted to know that I would be worthy of this formal change. In my heart I was and am a Jewish person. In one of my meetings with Rabbi Miller during this formality, he said we don’t want to rush this. Every time frame is different for a conversion, but I want you to be sure that you have taken the time to learn and appreciate the meaning of the many aspects of the Jewish faith. He was right. I learned, and I grew and as I grabbed on to each branch, I was becoming more in touch with myself as a Jew. There have been many simchas in my life and I am grateful for each one. Today is on the top of my list. I think of my mother-in-law as I am standing here before you. Eileen Berger was my first teacher and I will never forget what she told my husband as we sat down with a cup of coffee. Our daughter, Rebecca had just been born and we began to talk about faith and religion. She looked at her son and said, “Mark I never want you to forget you are a Jew.” That has resonated with me and with my own children. We cannot forget. Our traditions, our sense of community are things we cannot forget. Those are our flowers and they are beautiful.

LEADERSHIP MESSAGE

A

s the Executive Director, I pore over the monthly demographic report that details how many new members have joined Temple Shalom, how many have resigned and how many households are currently part of our One Family. I look at all sorts of data about how many members donate to Above & Beyond, attend this or that event, sign up for Religious School, give to our Endowment, and so much more.

At this time of year, when we count the Omer (the 49 days between Passover and Shavuot), we read in the Torah that it is a sin to count people directly and that doing so will bring a plague on the people of Israel. Phew! We keep a tally of households as opposed to individuals. After all, what would a Temple Shalom Board meeting be without Bobby Katz’s up-to-the-minute membership count?! We expect to finish our Fiscal Year 2018-2019 with 730 households in our One Family – an almost 50% increase in two years!

What’s our secret? Some say it’s the L’Shalom pledge system that is lowering the barriers to membership. Sure, that is a factor for some. But if you don’t find rich worship experiences, profound Torah studies, transformative social justice programs and a welcoming and hospitable atmosphere when you walk in the door, no pledge system will keep you coming back. Only a face-to-face community of intimacy and warmth that shares, celebrates and supports individuals in the ups and downs of life and becomes an integral part of a meaningful life will do the trick.

We cannot create such a community without you! Whether you are a learner, a leader, a Sabbath regular or all of the above, we invite you to get involved at Temple. And if you are a veteran member, please go out of your way to embrace and integrate new members into the fabric of our sacred community. Each of you is an ambassador for Temple Shalom.

So, let’s keep counting households, but always remember that behind every number is a unique person, a couple or a family with an individual story and unique Jewish journey. Please share yours with us and help us build the community that you want to see.

Debra Antzis When I wrote my first “President’s Message” for the Voice, I acknowledged that the Temple’s president “is simply a representative, holding office not as an individual but in trust (for a time) on behalf of the Temple’s full membership.”

One year later, I hope that I have, so far, fulfilled the trust you placed in me.

Thank you to all who have worked hard over the past year to further the best interests of our diverse membership, being receptive to new ideas and at the same time respectful of our traditions. Clergy, staff, lay leadership and our many volunteers have shown their commitment to Temple Shalom, and I am deeply grateful.

LEARN WITH US Fashioning A rt from Paper On Friday, March 15, more than twenty Temple Shalom members attended a tour of the Isabelle de Borchgrave exhibit, Fashioning Art from Paper, at the Baker Museum. Attendees were treated to a private tour led by Temple Shalom member and Baker Museum docent, Ellaine Rosen. The exhibit, which features de Brochgrave’s artful exploration of historical costume, will be at the Baker Museum through May.

Have you noticed our beautiful artwork?

As you walk through the halls of Temple Shalom, you will notice the many beautiful pieces of artwork adorning our walls. Some pieces were donated by past and present members. Some pieces were created by our members. Some pieces were simply dropped off by generous members of the community. We don’t have information on all of the pieces, but we do on some. Periodically we will highlight certain pieces in The Voice.

Hanging right outside the Temple Shalom front office is a painting by William Meyerowitz (1888-1981) titled Chassidim with Clarinet. This colorful oil on masonite painting was donated by Temple Shalom member William Kaye. It depicts two Chassidic men in traditional clothing of black hats and wool coats. One of the men is playing the clarinet.

Teaching Staff Workshop

ecently the Religious School teaching staff gathered for a day of professional development and learning. Rabbi Adam Miller introduced the group of educators to the topic of Passover “From Sinai to Seder.” Rabbi Miller spoke of mention in the Mishnah in the second century C.E. of references to the various phases of the Seder ceremony as we know it today. He also talked about a new tradition of placing a banana on the Seder plate – in memory of a refugee family who lost a child in their desperate flight from oppression; the child’s favorite treat was a banana.

Another recent tradition is a tomato on the Seder plate – bringing to our attention the oppression of farmworkers here in the United States. At Passover, we are reminded that we are obligated to create justice in the world.

Our other guest speaker, Dr. Kelly Roy, is the coordinator of the Early Childhood Education Department at Florida SouthWestern College. Dr. Roy introduced teaching strategies to engage students in higher levels of thinking and hands-on learning. She talked about how the most recent brain research informs our teaching policies. As teachers, we know that students learn best through active, hands-on learning, as opposed to lectureJanet Rosen and Robyn Deering style learning. This is because a child’s entire body is interconnected with the brain and responds to and is stimulated by active engagement.

Dr. Roy impressed upon us that successful teachers find ways to make connections of seemingly unrelated concepts to students’ lives. Most of our teaching staff are exemplary educators and are already implementing these research-based strategies.

In just a few short days, on Saturday, May 4, Temple Shalom Preschool will host their 15th Annual Art Show. Our young Picasso’s have been working incredibly hard on their finest art projects which will be sure to WOW their moms and dads. This year promises to be the most incredible Art Show ever. The Art Show Committee has gone above and beyond and promises a new and exciting experience. Please call the Preschool office for more information on attending or supporting this event.

There is nothing like tradition and holidays to let us know where in the year we are. Children thrive on structure and repetition so it’s no wonder that the festivals we celebrate each year create lasting memories. Such rituals can be started at an early age and that is our intention at Temple Shalom Preschool.

On Passover, another much-loved celebration, children become familiar with the different foods offered and the meaning behind their presentation. As in many Jewish holidays, the menu plays an important part. We celebrated Passover with our TSP families at our annual Passover Seder where traditional dishes were served. In our Storyland, the story of Moses was told and acted out on stage; in art class, traditional Seder plates are crafted; in music, customary songs are sung and danced to; and in our classrooms, creative haggadahs constructed; all making for a fun learning experience, especially for our little ones.

As these children progress through Temple Shalom Preschool year after year, these customs are repeated, forming a constant reminder of where they come from and instilling in them a sense of belonging. Those students who are not of the Jewish faith are exposed to practices that other religions follow, broadening their horizons.

May is an incredibly busy and celebratory month for us. In addition to our Art Show, the Lions classes celebrate their mothers with the much-anticipated Mother’s Day Brunch. The Lions’ team helps the children prepare special keepsakes, songs and a delicious brunch just for the moms. We also celebrate our TSP Graduates. They have worked so hard throughout the years and have eagerly awaited this moment in their lives. It is a bittersweet time, we are losing our Pre-K students but know that they are academically, socially and emotionally prepared and ready to take on Kindergarten.

Enrollment is open for our fabulous fun-filled summer camps, Camp Shalom and Camp Einstein. Maintaining consistency with our little ones makes the transition to the next level much easier. Those children who attend our summer camps have an easier time adjusting to their new classes in the fall.

The Israel Scout Friendship Caravan is coming to Naples in June!

This Caravan consists of 2 leaders and 10 Israeli teens who will perform by singing and dancing at different venues for our Naples community.

The Scouts will be arriving at around 9:00am on Tuesday, June 11 and leaving Naples on Thursday, June 13 in the early morning.

We need a few host families!

Hosting the Scouts The hosting experience is often the most exciting and meaningful part of the Caravan’s visit. The hosting relationship goes far beyond providing food and a bed – the host families become true surrogate families during their stay. Families love bringing the Caravan into their homes, getting to know the teens and learning more about Israel. It is a valuable and unforgettable experience.

Joshua is in 7th grade at North Naples Middle School. He has two older sisters that he loves and looks up to; Jamie (22 years old) and Riley (19 years old). Josh is an avid music fan who went to his first concert, Rush, at seven years old and has been playing drums for many years. Besides music, Josh also plays golf, loves video games, and is excited to spend his second summer at Camp Coleman. He serves as a school ambassador, welcoming new students to school and making sure no one has to eat lunch alone. Josh feels honored to be Mr. Moeckler’s last Bar Mitzvah student at Temple Shalom.

Jeanette Fischer Director of Communications Jeanette is the editor of the monthly newsletter, The Voice and has the responsibility of keeping our congregation, and the Greater Naples community, informed about all the wonderful things happening at Temple Shalom through the weekly emails, flyers and advertisements.

She also maintains the Temple calendar and manages the scheduling of over 1,300 events at Temple Shalom including the use of the building by other organizations. Jeanette, her husband Glenn and three of their four children (Jared, Julie and Zachary) moved to Naples six years ago from Northern NJ. Their daughter, Samantha, resides in Asheville, NC and visits whenever she can.

irst, I want to thank all Sisterhood members for attending events and luncheons and voting in the new Board.

It’s May and while the seasonal residents are on their way home, many Sisterhood members remain here working on next year’s events. We are always looking for people to help - be a chairperson for a function, or help checking people in at our events. So, contact us if you are interested in being part of the team.

Just because I am the President of Sisterhood you don’t have to worry. I am still one of the “Oneg Ladies,” making platters and baking every Friday morning. Oh yes! Here’s my plug, if you like to bake and don’t want to eat all the baked goods yourself, then bring them to Temple so everyone can enjoy your recipes. We always need helpers and new bakers. Also, if you are down-sizing and have glass or ceramic platters, consider donating them.

For those who haven’t met me or my husband, Marty and I have been Temple Shalom members for 30 years. We came from Miami Beach. I was a dental hygienist and he was a physician. We have two children and four grandsons.

Sisterhood is proud that it runs the biggest and best Judaica Shop in Greater Naples. We have many volunteers who help to staff the Judaica Shop. Judy Spintman (orders our Judaica Shop inventory) and I prepare the bank deposits for our accountant/treasurers Becky Cornacchia and Fran Nossen. Many other Sisterhood members work hard to make Sisterhood fun and engaging, including Debbe Schertzer, Vice President of Fundraising, and Bunny Kaufman who are working on next year’s events. Ida Margolis, Vice President, with Barbara Druckman, First Vice-President, will be arranging the Luncheons and speakers. Suggestions on making our events available to all members are always welcome. I must not forget Helen Weinfeld who is in charge of Book Bag and is one of the “Oneg Ladies.”

Another purpose of Sisterhood is to help the Religious School by providing a scholarship for tutoring a child or helping to pay for a special trip. We also help fund the RAC trip with the Rabbi when the teens go to Washington, DC. If there are things the Temple may need, we have discretionary funds available.

As you can see, Sisterhood doesn’t do just one thing - we do what needs to be done. Please consider joining us.

Let’s M ake Our Voices Heard “There is a Chinese curse which says, ‘May he live in interesting times.’ Like it or not we live in interesting times. They are times of danger and uncertainty; but they are also more open to the creative energy of men than any other time in history.”

These words were spoken by Robert Kennedy in a speech in Cape Town in June 1966. Those words were true then, and they are true today. One way that we can use our “creative energy” is to get involved and make our voices heard. There are issues that affect us on a Federal, State and local level and it is up to each and every one of us to not only understand the issues but to make sure our voice is heard.

Our elected representatives are influenced by those who call, email or write to them about issues that are important to you.

One way to keep up to date on all the issues in Florida is by subscribing to Sparker’s Soapbox. I recently attended a presentation by Sandy Parker and was impressed with her knowledge and ability to explain what’s happening in Florida in understandable language. Her website also includes the ability to show every elected official, including contact information, from the President of the United States, officials at the federal level and members of your local elective bodies based on where you live.
