Every year, like clockwork, I know that I will receive the same email on the same date. It is not for my birthday, our wedding anniversary, or marking another personal milestone. It has to do with the calendar, my sense of humor, and my love for science fiction. On May 4th, I receive the same email from a group of friends, “May the Fourth be with you.”

Cheesy, I know. But that simple play on words has brought many years’ worth of laughter. In fact, May the fourth has been designated as international Star Wars Day, at least unofficially. All across the internet, similar emails and images will be sent of Wookies, Yoda, Darth Vader, Jedis and more wishing everyone, “May the Fourth be with you.”

Across the Jewish world May 4, 2016 will have a different tone, as it marks the start of Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance day. Communities, like our own here in Collier County, will gather together to remember those tragic events and reflect upon the memories of those killed. Collectively we strive to fulfill the teaching of noted 20th century philosopher and Rabbi Emil Fackenheim. Fackenheim postulated the 614th commandment – one is obligated to continue Jewish life and deny Hitler a posthumous victory. When we stand together as one Jewish community, we stand in defiance against those who tried to destroy our people.

While vastly different, these two occasions on May 4th are related to one another. Created by those who grew up in the shadow of the Holocaust, Star Wars evokes the stark good vs. evil imagery we think of with the Holocaust. The evil Empire seeks the genocide of all Jedis, and creates its own final solution, the Death Star, to wipe out entire planets worth of civilizations. Additionally, the main figure of evil, at least in the original film, was named Darth Vader - which in German means “dark father.”

Out of the darkness of the Empire, those who would stand for justice, freedom, and equality, unite together; “May the Force be with you.” Words that call for hope and light at times of difficulty and challenge. Similarly, we come together on Yom HaShoah to find light and hope out of the ashes of the Holocaust. We want to bring honor to the memories of those who have died, by learning about and educating on the lessons of the Holocaust, while standing up against those who would use xenophobia, hateful speech, and racism to oppress others.

This May 4 , join us for our powerful Yom HaShoah program that brings together the whole Jewish community at Temple Shalom. Beginning at 5pm, the evening gives an opportunity to remember, reflect, and find blessings out of the ashes. Let us say, “May the Fourth be with you”, and may the Holy One of Blessing be with us all – for light, hope, and peace. th

Every once in a while someone will approach me after a Shabbat service and ask about a particular melody that I sang, “is that traditional?” and my response is almost always the same.

“Whose tradition?” Many of us were first exposed to Jewish music as a youth in the communities that we belonged to, sitting with our parents in the pews. Depending on that congregation’s location and affiliation, the music heard in Los Angeles may have been very different from what someone in Ohio, New York or Israel grew up with. Or maybe you were first exposed to Jewish music while attending a Jewish summer camp. Either way, it brings me back to the question of tradition and the best answer I can come up with, that everyone has their own tradition.

Cantor Here in Naples we have a very unique situation in that everyone is from somewhere else! Even if you grew up with the same melodies, how we sing them may vary. One of the challenges our Donna Azu choir faces is that the sheet music the choir is singing from doesn’t always match what the congregation sings and knows. Over time the melodies have morphed and changed. As our accompanist and choir director, Peter Lewis, likes to say, “it’s the beauty of the Diaspora!”

As your cantor, how do I choose music that meets everyone needs? It seems like an impossible task so instead I try to achieve a balance of the familiar and the innovative, of the “traditional” and the contemporary. Truly it is one of the greatest challenges of cantors and musicians today. I strive to bring music, old and new, to every aspect of Temple life with meaningful devotion and spirituality. By doing so, I hope to create an atmosphere of music which enables you as a congregation to both rejoice in song and meditate in prayer.

Cantor Sol Zim was quoted saying “Prayer and song is what draws one to spiritual heights. What could be more beautiful than seeing and hearing a sanctuary filled with fellow Jews, families, friends and neighbors, joined together in harmony?” Let us create our own traditions by creating an environment that is comfortable, engaging and inviting for all congregants and guests. Nothing makes me happier than looking out at the congregation and seeing that a particular melody has moved you spiritually, but what I love even more is when your voices join with me in words of song and prayer!

Preschool News

In just a few short weeks we will end our Religious School year. As we prepare for next year (yes, already!), I’d like to take a moment and thank some very important people. It takes a village, and ours is a large one!

The Men’s Club and Sisterhood of Temple Shalom both contribute significantly to our school. They give generously financially, but they also give of their time and support. From scholarships to program needs, the Purim carnival to Confirmation, and lots more – we cannot thank them enough for all that they do!

The Jewish Federation of Collier County also gives generous financial support. Their funding helps ensure that scholarships are available so that no one is denied the chance to be part of our school for financial reasons. This year, we also were fortunate to receive a grant for programming that will allow us to bring in two new programs next year.

Our Religious School is so very lucky to have such a wonderful staff of teachers and madrichim (teen assistants). Their dedication and love for what they do is inspiring. No matter what their week holds, they bring engaging lessons and dynamic conversations to our classrooms each Sunday and Wednesday.

There are many volunteers throughout the year that deserve incredible thanks. Our room parents, Religious School Advisory Committee, office volunteers, classroom helpers, and all around helping hands ensure that everything runs as smoothly as possible.

Most of all, I want to thank our families. Your partnership is integral to our success. Our school is more than just classrooms; we’re a community because of you. I truly appreciate all of your time, effort, and support.

To all of you, I want to say a huge THANK YOU. We couldn’t do it without you!

Nathaniel Zeitler on becoming a Bar Mitzvah May 7, 2016

Nathaniel Zeitler, son of Dana and Mitchell, attends Pine Ridge Middle School, where he is in 7th grade. He has 2 older brothers Benjamin and Samuel. Nate loves music. He plays both the violin in the orchestra and the trumpet in the school band. He enjoys spending time with his family and friends.

There’s nothing like tradition and holidays to let us know where in the year we are. Children thrive on structure and repetition so it’s no wonder that the festivals we celebrate each year create lasting memories. Such rituals can be started at an early age and that is our intention at Temple Shalom Preschool.

On Passover, a much-loved celebration, children become familiar with the different foods offered and the meaning behind their presentation. As in many Jewish holidays, the menu plays an important part. We celebrated Passover with our TSP families at our annual Passover Seder where traditional dishes were savored and the children sang and danced to Passover songs with our wonderful trio! Rabbi Miller, Cantor Azu and Miss Jane told the story of Passover with songs and stories that were enjoyed by our entire TSP family. Throughout the week, in our Storyland the story of Moses was told and acted out on stage; in art class, traditional Seder plates were crafted; in music, customary songs were sung and danced to; and in our classrooms, creative haggadahs were constructed; all making for a fun learning experience, especially for our little ones.

As these children progress through Temple Shalom Preschool year after year, these customs are repeated, forming a constant reminder of where they come from and instilling in them a sense of belonging. Those students who are not of the Jewish faith are exposed to practices that other religions follow, broadening their horizons.

“You are my strength when I was weak you were my voice when I couldn’t speak you were my eyes when I couldn’t see you saw the best there was in me” This is one of the songs our Lions (3 year olds) will be singing to their mothers at the beautiful brunch they are preparing. These little ones are so excited and bursting with emotion to show their love to their mommies through songs, poems and the gorgeous gifts they created. Stop by and take a look at this amazing display of love on May 6th at 10:00AM. Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing mothers out there!

Alexander Nicolau on becoming a Bar Mitzvah May 14, 2016

Alex Nicolau, son of Martin and Stacy, will become a Bar Mitzvah on May 14th. He has two sisters, Bella and Julia.

Alex is in the 7th grade at Pine Ridge Middle School where his favorite classes are math and science. In his free time, he enjoys playing football and basketball and spending time with his friends.

We will say farewell to our four year olds on May 20th, with great pride and a bit of sadness as so many of them have been with us for four years. We are proud that the children are so well prepared to move on to kindergarten.

The majority of our Pre-K students are reading or surpassing beginning reading, writing and math skills.

Our little ones have grown so big and capable of many things since they began their preschool journey. This reminds us that time moves very quickly. Each stage of our child’s growth brings wonderful new changes, but we should try to slow down and appreciate what is happening now.

Our Temple Shalom Preschool Family is so blessed to have the children and appreciate every moment we are able to be a part of their lives.

Temple Shalom Men’s Club Annual Family Baseball Night!

May is the time when things start to slow down. Many of our members head back north while those of us living here in Southwest Florida enjoy less traffic and less crowded restaurants. It’s also a time to reflect on the need to perform tikkun olam. The needs of the poor and hungry do not lessen during this time of the year. If anything, the needs only increase and that creates an opportunity for the Tikkun Olam Council (TOC) to continue our approach regarding helping the poor and hungry.

There are three broad areas in which we will concentrate our efforts over the spring and summer months. They are:

1. Harry Chapin Food Bank. A few of Temple Shalom’s members have already volunteered multiple times at either the warehouse in Naples or at the mobile food pantry which brings the food to various locations in Collier County. We want to encourage Temple Shalom members to join us one day a month at the warehouse in Naples. We want to pick the fourth Friday every month for us to work at the warehouse. The session lasts three hours from 12:00-3:00 PM. What a great way to start Shabbat! The first Temple Shalom Food Bank day will be on Friday, May 27th. Here is what we need from you:

Once that is complete you are ready to join us as we make a difference here in Collier County.

Temple Shalom Endowments offer customized giving, dedicated to helping every donor find the right opportunity for yourself and your family to create a legacy that is meaningful to you. It may be a one-time gift, a pledge to be paid over several years or a gift planned today to be made in the future. You may make a gift naming your own fund, facility or sacred place or a gift dedicated to a specific purpose.

Look what we’ve accomplished so far toward our $10 million goal.

• We established the Temple Shalom General Endowment Fund (TSGEF) at the Community Foundation of Collier County (CFCC) for cost-effective administration and management

Showing We Care

Contributions to Temple Shalom funds are wonderful ways to show your appreciation of family and friends, to celebrate happy occasions and to honor the memories of loved ones. We suggest a minimum donation of chai ($18.00). With a minimum donation of chai, a notice of your gift will be sent to the honoree and mention will be published monthly in The Voice.

Operations

General Fund: Donations used for operating expenses.

Tree of Life: Each ‘Rock’ and ‘Star of David’ is a donation of $540.00; each ‘Leaf ’ is $240.00. The contribution must be received in its entirety before engraving is ordered.

Burn The Mortgage Fund: Established by Gerry and Pearl Sugarman to reduce payment of any existing mortgage.

Worship

Memorial Fund: Donations made in honor of a loved one who has passed.

William Freschel Kiddush Fund: All donations help provide Kiddush Lunch each Saturday following worship services.

A $150 donation is considered to be a sponsorship to honor a special someone or occasion.

Flower Fund: Provides Bimah flowers each Shabbat. A $150.00 donation is considered to be a sponsorship in memory or in honor of a special someone or occasion.

Mitzvah Baskets Fund: A $100.00 donation will purchase several hundred dollars of food for JFCS. Dr. Philip & Shirley Gilbert Music Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement of music at Temple Shalom.

Endowment

Religious School Fund: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for Jewish learning in both Sunday and Hebrew Schools.

Endowment Fund: Donations help to secure the future, enrich the programs and provide for emergency needs of the congregation.

Religious School Enrichment Fund: Donations augment the Religious School budget to enrich the education of our children.

Scholar In Residence Endowment Fund: Supports the endowment established by Shirley and Henry Kraus. This fund enables Temple Shalom to bring visiting scholars to the Temple as an educational benefit to the membership.

Polster Religious School Scholarship Fund: To supplement Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Ben Calmenson Fund: Donations will be used to create sponsorships to send children to attend Camp Coleman.

Rabbi Abraham Shusterman Children's Center Memorial Fund: To support our Religious School and Preschool.

Sisterhood Religious School Scholarship Fund: To provide Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Joseph S. Weinfeld Faculty Development Fund: Donations support both curriculum and teaching skill enrichment activities for Sunday and Hebrew School teachers.

The Low Family Endowment Fund: To secure the future of Temple Shalom and Reform Judaism in Southwest Florida.

The Herbert & Ruth Abramson Fund: To supplement the general operating fund and to provide enrichment for Temple functions.

The Janet & Howard Solot Endowment Fund: For general charitable uses and purposes.

Clergy/Leadership

Rabbi Miller’s Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes,and general enhancement of the Rabbi's work.

Cantor Azu's Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes and general enhancement of the Cantor's work.

Youth Activities Fund: Donations provide financial support for children of our congregation to attend Camp Coleman, to take part in regional/national youth conventions, and to experience a summer in Israel.

Leadership Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement and enrichment of leadership programs at Temple Shalom.

Preschool
