Purim is coming! Purim is coming! That time to celebrate and recall our ancestors’ miraculous salvation from a genocidal maniac bent on annihilating the Jews. Sadly the hatred shown toward the Jews in that classic story resonates with us as we watch events taking place around

the world.

As much as we enjoy the celebratory elements of Purim – the Purim Shpiel and the carnival – we should not forget an important lesson from the story. When the King grants Haman’s request to destroy the Jews, letters go throughout the land, informing people that they will attack the Jews in their community on the same day. The entire Jewish population of Persia faced destruction, on the authority of a piece of parchment. Recognizing the power of those letters, Mordechai declared after his success that new letters be sent out throughout the land. These second letters superceded the words of Haman and gave powers to the Jews.

Today, many of us have become numb to the large number of letters, electronic and paper, that arrive in our mailboxes each day. More often than not, these “letters” end up in the trash or recycling pile without even so much as a second thought. The overflow of mail weakens our belief in power of communication – with good reason in many cases.

Yet, we should not discount the power of words. Words can cause damage, and they can also instill hope.

Letters can sway opinion, and educate others. At Mitzvah Day, we wrote dozens of letters to IDF soldiers, thanking them for their service to protect the Israeli lives. We communicated with our local responders, to express gratitude for keeping our community safe. Letters remain an effective way to communicate with our leaders in government, to express our views as constituents.

Mordechai’s letter brought hope to the Jews of Persia at a time when they felt isolated, and faced the darkest of hours. We have the opportunity to bring light against the darkness of today. Use your words to write letters to our local papers about the growth of anti-Semitism around the globe. Stay in touch with loved ones, family members, and friends living in Europe or other communities abroad. Let them know that they are not alone – kol Yisrael aravim zeh la’zeh – all Israel stands together.

Words have power, and one letter can make a difference.

From Cantor Azu So much to look forward to!

It’s March and if the traffic on the road is an indicator, season in Naples is in full swing. There are so many wonderful activities taking place here at Temple Shalom and the greater Collier County community but don’t forget all of the wonderful Purim and Pesach programs that we have planned!

Purim begins the evening of Wednesday, March 4, 2015. Purim is celebrated by the reading of the Scroll of Esther, known in Hebrew as the Megillat Esther, which relates the basic story of Purim. Under the rule of King Ahashuerus, Haman, the King’s prime minister, plots to exterminate all of the Jews of Persia. His plan is foiled by Queen Esther and her cousin Mordechai, who ultimately save the Jews of the land from destruction. This year, a pizza dinner and the reading of the Megillah will be led by members of Temple Shalom. We’ll begin with dinner at 6pm followed by the reading. Be prepared to be rowdy! We need you to boo and make noise when Haman’s name is read aloud.

The fun doesn’t end there! Our congregational performance of our Frozen themed Purim spiel will take place at 11:00AM on Sunday March 8 followed by our Purim carnival. Dressing up is encouraged on both dates.

The celebrating continues as we prepare for Pesach. On Monday, March 23 at 6:00PM, Caren Plotkin and I will co-lead the Women’s Seder, celebrating the brave women of Judaism. It’s a joyous gathering where grandmothers, mothers, daughters and friends join together as we retell our story of freedom. Jane Galler and Lori Cohen will join me in song and dance as we celebrate this special holiday.

President’s Message

The Season is still here!

Temple Shalom has been “popping” all season long. We have provided programs and events, both Temple and Community, which have been culturally enriching to the Southwest Florida area. In addition, it has been a wonderful season to see so many of our members engaging and connecting with other members. One of the objectives of the One Family initiative is the connection and engagement of our Temple family providing opportunities to listen to each other’s stories and to find common interests.

For months, our leadership, clergy, and staff have been working on the agenda for the next two years. Several programs are being developed to enhance the Temple’s financial and spiritual security. A Recognition Group has been working on the methods to recognize all those that have given to the Temple, in time and resources, since our beginning. A new screen will be placed in the lobby to give recognition to all those people. The Endowment and Lifelong Giving Group has partnered with the Community Foundation of Collier County to provide opportunities for our members to ensure the financial sustainability of the Temple. The Fund Raising Group has been organizing and preparing for the next three years with opportunities and events that will enrich the lives of our members and provide resources to the Temple. The Solicitation Group is organizing a donor oriented database to enable the Temple to track all activities, relationships, and giving of our members. Our Marketing Team is working with all of our groups to ensure consistency throughout the media, both digitally and in print. We have also launched a group to study our dues structure and that of other congregations across North America to make sure we are providing the best options for our members and the Jewish community.

The Jewish Educator and Executive Director search groups are developing needs assessments and then searching for the persons that best fit the Temple’s needs.

The Above and Beyond Campaign is reaching new levels of response and we thank all of those that have participated. The fiscal year is not over until June 30, 2015; we still have opportunities in terms of number of participants and dollars received. Keep in mind that any amount is appreciated, whatever your comfort level is. We have the new category, “I/We Care”. This category is working for many as do the other categories. If you have not given, please consider a contribution and be a “Pin” on the Star of David in our lobby. The pins in the Star represent member units that have given to the Above and Beyond campaign. They DO NOT represent amounts given.

As we move from one successful engagement to another, we find ourselves becoming more involved, engaged, and connected to each other and the community. The “Casino Night” and the Men’s Club “Dinner and Theater Night Out” are approaching. These events will be both FUN raiser and FUND raiser occasions for the Temple and for the Men’s Club. I hope that you will join us.

Again, the Temple thanks its members for the support and participation during this great season we are sharing.

From the Religious School Director

I have wonderful memories of Purim as a child. Growing up in New Orleans, we were used to the idea of dressing up in costumes and having fun at Mardi Gras, but Purim was extra special because it was our holiday!

Each year, the entire Religious School at Gates of Prayer prepared for the big Purim celebration.

Each grade chose a prince and a princess to be in the Royal Court and a King and Queen were picked from the Confirmation class. It was a big deal to be in the court because you got to dress up in the most beautiful outfits and be presented to the King and Queen as you represented your class. Once all of the court members were presented, there was a show performed by children in the school, followed by an epic Purim Carnival with games and prizes galore!

My two sisters and I were always part of the show each year, performing a carefully choreographed dance number that we worked on with our dancing school instructor for at least two months prior to the big event. We always closed the show with a tap, ballet or jazz number that brought everyone to their feet. It was a day of unending fun and laughter – a day that was extra special, especially because it was our holiday!

Join us for our Purim Celebrations: Wednesday, March 4th for a special Pizza dinner and Megillah reading (performed by members of our Congregation).

Dinner is at 6pm and the Megillah presentation starts at 6:30pm. Call the Temple or check the Temple website to make your reservation.

Sunday, March 8th is our annual Purim Spiel and Carnival from 11:00AM-1:30PM. This year’s spiel is based on the popular movie Frozen and will feature our own students and Temple members. You can purchase wrist bands through the Religious School office and through the Temple website.

On a different note, just as soon as we put away the Purim masks and groggers, we’ll start to begin our preparation for Passover. We look forward to our own “Matzah Bake” on March 29th, when each class will make their own matzah from scratch! It’s loads of fun and a great activity for everyone. We appreciate all of the parents and grandparents who volunteer to help us with this event.

Just a reminder that there will be no school on Sunday, March 15 and 22 and on Wednesday, March 18 for Spring Break.

My name is Benjamin Korn. I am in the seventh grade at The Community School of Naples. I have two older sisters, Samantha (18) and Jessica (14). I enjoy soccer and playing the drums in the middle school band.

My name is Julia Chernin. I live with my mom, Anne Chernin. I was born in Kazakhstan. I’m in the seventh grade at Community School of Naples where I play the violin in the middle school orchestra.

I love swimming and am a member of the T 2 swim club, CSN Varsity Swim team and the middle school track team.

I also enjoy art, especially sketching and painting. For my mitzvah project I want to help kids who are hungry and am asking people who come to my Bat Mitzvah to bring food for JFCS Food Pantry.

Preschool on Parade

We were so proud to show off our amazing Preschool to the public at our Annual Health & Safety Day on February 15. In addition to raising awareness of a healthy lifestyle and child safety, we opened our doors to the public and offered tours to potential new families. This year was no exception, we had many new families come through our doors and see the amazing environment we have available for their children. We were also able to showcase our flourishing garden which is in full bloom.

We have also opened up next year’s Preschool registration to the public. For several weeks, only current TSP families may register to get the first available spots for the 20152016 school year. Any remaining spots are now open to the public, but, because of our incredible curriculum and outstanding program, there are very few spots open.

As Purim approaches, we will once again have our Preschool Purim Parade on March 6. The children are looking forward to dressing up and eating yummy hamantaschen while singing songs about Queen Esther and evil Haman.

March is also the month that we celebrate and honor our teachers. They have worked so hard throughout the year making sure that each and every child is happy, acclimated in their environment and thriving in their studies. Our Temple Shalom Preschool parents are the best! Throughout the weeklong festivities, they make sure that the teachers feel appreciated and loved. The teachers enjoy lovely gifts, breakfast, and a beautiful lunch where they are doted on by the parents.

As one of the highlights of the Preschool year, we invite our Preschool and Temple Families and the public, to attend our 25th Anniversary and Art Show on April 30. This will be a meaningful and significant evening filled with wine, refreshments, silent auctions, and entertainment. Of course it will showcase our own little artists who have worked so hard throughout the year to create amazing masterpieces. The committee is working especially hard to ensure this event is a memorable evening for all.

Purim is right around the corner. I invite you to come to the reading of the megillah which will be Wednesday March 4 at 6:00PM for pizza dinner (call temple to sign up for that) and 6:30PM for the megillah reading of the Book of Esther. Sisterhood is proud to take part in the megillah reading. We will be acting out chapters three and four. Come on down and watch us become Esther, Mordechai, King Achashverosh and Haman. If any of you would like to be part of this fun, call me at 597-1553 and I will explain what is needed.

On Tuesday, March, 10 at 11:30AM, Sisterhood is very proud to present Jim Cochran, the founder and director of the eighty voice Naples Philharmonic Chorus, the resident organist of the Naples Philharmonic and the director of the Naples Philharmonic Youth Chorus. We look forward to hearing all about Jim’s very varied background and where the music in his soul came from. As always, a delicious lunch will also be provided. Your check is your reservation and prices are $25 for members of Sisterhood, $28 for non-members of Sisterhood and $50 for sponsors.

Sunday School for adults is back!!

The Sunday School for Adults 2015

In the first session, February 22, Rabbi Perman focused on some of the most important questions people raise about our faith., the core ideas that form the foundation of Jewish belief, the set of ideas that have always been at the center of Judaism. These ideas are simple yet powerful truths that form the basis of all Western religious thought, not just Judaism but Christianity and Islam as well.

The second session, Sunday, March 1, will apply those questions to the realm of Jewish practice, and demonstrate how you can explain Jewish practices to your fellow Jews as well as your nonJewish friends in terms of the powerful ideas that have led us through the ages. You can also find new meaning in your own Jewish practice. When Tevya sang “Tradition!” it was a nice comfortable response — but not much of an answer. You can do better.

In the process of learning about ourselves, in the course of explaining what we’re all about, we’ll come to understand ourselves in new and different ways that showcase the beauty and durability of our traditions.

This is truly Judaism on a grown-up level, presented in a lively and refreshing manner that will give new meaning to everything you’ve ever understood to be authentically Jewish.

Finally, get the answers you’ve been waiting for. Understand those reasons. Learn how to explain Judaism to others. When you can explain yourself to others, you get to know yourself.

Aside from being the immediate past president of Temple Shalom, Yale Freeman is the recipient of many prestigious honors and awards in the legal profession. Most notably, Yale has been counted amoung the Super Lawyers from 2008-2014 in the area of “Criminal Defense - White Collar”. This honor is limited to only five percent of the attorneys in each state and Yale is the only attorney between Tampa and Miami to achieve this honor in White Collar Criminal Defense. The national peer-review publication Best Lawyers in America, considered to be “the most credible and definitive guide to legal excellence in the United States” has voted Yale amoung their best lawyers in the field of White Collar Criminal Defense from 2007-2015. Temple Shalom celebrates Mitzvah Day

Temple Shalom’s one family gathered at 9:00AM on Sunday February 8th for a delicious breakfast sponsored by the Men’s Club to give everyone the fortitude for 2 1/2 hours of performing mitzvot. At 9:30 everyone gathered in the Temple sanctuary for an opening rally led by Rabbi Miller, Canter Azu, Jane Galler and boxes of mac & cheese to make noise to wake up & get in the spirit to do good deeds. Here is a list of mitzvot performed by our One Family: *****baked dog biscuits for the Humane Society *****decorated journals for the Purple Bag Project for kids with cancer *****sent thank you notes to first responders & IDF soldiers *****stuffed purple bags for the Purple Bag Project for kids with cancer *****decorated ball caps for kids with cancer ***** filled backpacks with school supplies & toiletries for homeless children ***** congregants donated blood to the Community Blood Center ***** donated 130 boxes of mac & cheese to the Meals of Hope food pantry ***** packaged 50,000 Meals of Hope food packages for those suffering from food insecurity. One package is enough to feed 8 people.

Everyone performed acts of Tikun Olam. What a great way to spend a Sunday morning at Temple Shalom!

Contributions to Temple Shalom Showing We Care

Contributions made to the various Temple Shalom funds are wonderful ways to show your appreciation of family and friends, to celebrate happy occasions and to honor the memories of loved ones. We suggest a minimum donation of chai ($18.00). With a minimum donation of $18.00, a notice of your gifts will be sent to the honoree and mention will be published monthly in The Voice.

Operations

General Fund: Donations used for operating expenses.

Tree of Life: Each ‘Rock’ and ‘Star of David’ is a donation of $540.00; each ‘Leaf ’ is $240.00. The contribution must be received in its entirety before engraving is ordered.

Burn The Mortgage Fund: Established by Gerry and Pearl Sugarman to reduce payment of any existing mortgage.

Religious School

Endowment

Religious School Enrichment Fund: Donations augment the Religious School budget to enrich the education of our children.

Scholar In-Residence Endowment Fund: Supports the endowment established by Shirley and Henry Kraus. This fund enables Temple Shalom to bring visiting scholars to the Temple as an educational benefit to the membership.

Religious School: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for Jewish learning in both Sunday and Hebrew Schools.

Polster Religious School Scholarship Fund: To purchase or supplement Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Ben Calmenson Fund: Donations will be used to create sponsorships to send children to attend Camp Coleman.

Rabbi Abraham Shusterman Children's Center Memorial Fund: To support our Religious School and Preschool.

Sisterhood Religious School Scholarship Fund: To provide Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Memorial Fund: Donations made in honor of a loved one who has passed.

Joseph S. Weinfeld Faculty Development Fund: Donations support both curriculum and teaching skill enrichment activities for Sunday and Hebrew School teachers.

William Freschel Kiddush Fund: All donations help provide Kiddush Lunch each Saturday following worship services.

A $150 donation is considered to be a sponsorship to honor a special someone or occasion.

Youth Activities Fund: Donations provide financial support for children of our congregation to attend Camp Coleman, to take part in regional/national youth conventions, and to experience a summer in Israel.

Prayerbook Fund: The new minimum contributions to purchase a plaque for Shabbat and High Holiday Books: $50.00 / Pentateuch & Haftarah books: $100.00

Preschool

Flower Fund: Provides Bimah flowers each Shabbat. A $150.00 donation is considered to be a sponsorship in memory or in honor of a special someone or occasion.

Preschool Enrichment Fund: The enhancement of curriculum, educational programs and experiences.

Mitzvah Baskets: A $100.00 donation will purchase several hundred dollars of food for JFCS. Dr. Philip & Shirley Gilbert Music Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement of music at Temple Shalom.

Preschool Fund: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for the Preschool.

Arby Lipman Children's Library: Children and adolescent books and magazine subscriptions, and supplies are purchased.

Jack and Charlotte Ward Family Children's Music Shelf: Audio and video musical tapes for children.

Endowment Fund: Donations help to secure the future, enrich the programs and provide for emergency needs of the congregation.

The Herbert & Ruth Abramson Fund: To supplement the general operating fund and to provide enrichment for Temple functions.

Clergy/Leadership

Rabbi Miller’s Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes, and general enhancement of the Rabbi's work.

Cantor Azu's Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes, and general enhancement of the Cantor's work.

Leadership Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement and enrichment of leadership programs at Temple Shalom.

Library

Rabbi James & Jane Perman Library: Books, magazine subscriptions and supplies are purchased.

Social Action

David and Lillian Thalenfeld Fund for Social Justice: Provides support for Temple participation in social justice events and activities.

Oneg Shabbat: Contact Sandy Stone (Oct. 15 to May 15) or Evelyn Cole (May 16 to Oct. 14) for sponsorship in celebration of an event or to honor someone.

Historically Speaking By Helen Weinfeld, Temple Historian To celebrate the Sisterhood’s 50th anniversary, it is fitting that we recognize the efforts of the women who started the Sisterhood and worked to raise the funds to equip a kitchen when we had a “home of our own.”

In the Sisterhood Section of the Historical files is a picture dated January 13, 1976, showing Ethel Dinaburg being named “Woman of the Year” by Sisterhood President Alice Hirsh.

Attached to the photograph is a copy of the talk Alice Hirsh gave at the Paid-Up Membership Luncheon that afternoon. After welcoming those present she indicated that the total Sisterhood membership was 95 women.

(Note: It was not necessary to be a member of the Jewish Community Center of Collier County to be a Sisterhood member) The rest of the talk she gave speaks for itself:

“We are in our own building; the food was prepared by our Hospitality Committee, in our own kitchen, which we equipped. It is a fantastic achievement.

It was not always like this. A few years ago it was a great accomplishment to get 10 women to a Sisterhood meeting. Before that the numbers were even smaller. The meetings were attended by the women who did the work!!! And it was hard work -- work done by women with a dream – that we would one day have what you see here today.

It is to all these women that we dedicate the first “Woman of the Year” award. We wish we could acknowledge you one by one. However, this first award is presented symbolically to all of you by awarding it to a woman who has been a veritable backbone of the Sisterhood – President, perennial Treasurer and full time worker, our own Ethel Dinaburg, not just the woman of the year, but woman of the years.”

From the time the Sisterhood was established until the first building was dedicated, the women who worked to “have a home of our own” were, also, officers of the Sisterhood, and represented diverse parts of the Naples Jewish community.

Ethel Dinaburg and Fran Gilman were members of the first Jewish families to settle in Naples and establish businesses here. Ethel’s children and Fran’s niece were the first Jewish children in the Collier County schools.

Min Goldman and Leona Townsley came to Naples as wives of Golden Gate salesmen and stayed when most of the other salesmen and their families left Naples.

Lillian Aronoff, was the first retiree to be Sisterhood President.

Marcia Cervelli was the daughter of parents who had escaped the Holocaust by going to Cuba. She had the connection that allowed us to have activities at the Parish Hall of St Anne’s Catholic Church.

Alice Hirsh, also a retiree, and her family had escaped from Germany to South Africa and finally to Zanesville, Ohio.

Helen Weinfeld had first become involved in Naples in 1954 but didn’t come to Naples to live until 1969 when her children were away at college.

These are the women who were here before there was a building to call our own, who worked to provide the needs of the congregation. They provided the oneg Shabbat, membership teas, break-the-fasts, seders, luncheon meetings and programs, as well as fund raisers such as book-of-life cards, flea market and rummage sales, and community suppers.

The building we built at 1575 Pine Ridge Road and the kitchen we equipped are no longer there, but the Sisterhood still has the same dedication to Temple Shalom that those Sarahs, Leahs and Rebeccas of long ago had to a dream.
