From Rabbi Miller As a child, I always looked forward to long distance family road trips and serving as the navigator. Everyone knew the destination – but figuring out how we would get from our house to the final stop was an intriguing challenge.

Sitting in the back seat, I would have the map open in my lap. I watched carefully to see the roads we were taking, as well as cities and landmarks we might pass.

It was not until one fateful drive when the large map flew out of the window (somewhere near St. Louis), that I learned my role was not so critical. Fearful I had gotten us lost, my parents reassured me that everything was okay, they had a triptik they were already using in the front seat.

The AAA triptik, a brilliant invention. Dividing up the nation into single page segments, the folks at AAA had created a system for assembling unique travel maps for any person traveling from one point to another. The individual maps would be put together and bound, with key construction areas, and lodging suggestions duly noted along the way. One simply drove from one end of the page to another, then flipped to the next map. Driving step-by-step, one arrives at the destination safe and sound, without once having to hear a voice say, “Recalculating.”

Last month, Dr. Ron Wolfson gave us the large map of Temple Shalom’s future. Using his expertise and experience with congregations from around the country, Ron began by illustrating where we are today. His stories touched a nerve because they resonated with our stories. Ron’s

message included: the tale of the person asked to move from the seat at the back of the sanctuary large enough to sleep 800; thinking that his Hebrew name was simply “Sheket” because that’s all the teacher said to him; and the fact that Jews rejoice at meeting a fellow Jew halfway around the world, but won’t make the effort to get to know the congregant sitting two seats away.

Using a relational exercise, Ron demonstrated in three minutes what we have the potential to become: a synagogue where all members are part of One Family in relationship with one another and working together as a cohesive community to support one another, live Jewish values, and build the next generation.

That is our future, but we cannot get there overnight, any more than I could move our family vehicle from start to finish by tracing the path on the map with my finger. We need a congregational Triptik, and the patient understanding that we have a journey ahead of us.

The One Family Team and the Temple leadership are working to construct the Triptik, identifying the different pages needed to reach our destination such as: creating affinity groups, organizing Shabbat dinners, training congregation ambassadors, and re-evualating the new member experience. Those are just a few of the pages we will traverse together along our path toward One Family. Step-by-step we will make progress toward our bright future.

Death and Dying... Revisited The 2014 Sunday School for Adults with Rabbi Emeritus James Perman originally scheduled for February will be held at the Temple on two successive Sundays, March 2nd and 9th.

Of all the questions about Judaism and Jewish belief, these are among the most frequently asked: “What happens after I die?”

“Do Jews believe in Heaven and Hell?”

“What do Jews believe about life after death?”

“Is there such a thing as ‘Jewish last rites?’”

“How should I prepare for the inevitable?”

Jews have been asking these same timeless questions for a very long time. We have an ancient faith tradition that goes back thousands of years. By now we should have come up with some important ideas, even a few answers.

We do indeed have some answers — really good ones. They are what Rabbi Perman will discuss in March. As with all talks in this series, they are free of charge and open to all.

They take place in the Temple Sanctuary from 10:30 – 11:30.

The talks will examine the traditional wisdom Jews have carried through the ages. They will critically examine some of today’s best thinking. New issues include the prolongation of life and death, assisted suicide, family issues, alternatives to burial, and new and futuristic funeral practices.

Class starts at 10:30. Do bring your friends and continue the discussions on your own. All are welcome. This topic is of universal importance — as all of us know full well, no one is exempt.

From Cantor Azu When I was six or seven years old, my mother would take me to the video store every weekend.

We would go into the children’s section, and I would get to pick out whatever movie I wanted to watch. At six years old, this was a big deal for me. For about six months straight, I made the same movie selection every single weekend.

That movie was the musical “Annie.” I was obsessed! I wanted to dye my hair red and play Annie on Broadway. I knew the words to every single song, I owned the record as well as the locket! I did eventually get to play the part of Grace Farrell, Mr. Warbucks’ secretary in a JCC production when I was fourteen. Unfortunately, I was too old to be Annie.

To my mother’s relief, I eventually stopped watching the movie every weekend, but I’m still a huge fan of the musical. So, it was no surprise that I was extremely happy and excited when I found out that this year’s Purim Shpiel is going to be “Little Orphan Esther,” based on the story of Annie. The Shpiel is written by the very talented Marc Simon who brought us last year’s Shpiel, “Judge Yehudi.” I’ve had a chance to look at the script, and it’s sure to be another hit! Just like last year’s production, we want you, Temple Shalom, involved! We will perform the Shpiel for the congregation on Sunday morning, March 16 in the sanctuary. President’s Message

RELATIONAL JUDAISM Oh no…another article on the subject!

This article, however, comes from a very personal perspective. Many of you know that I left Temple Shalom several years ago. I felt it was a cold and unfriendly place.

I came back two years ago because I remembered a time when our Temple felt friendlier and warmer. I remembered a time when my children attended Sunday School and Hebrew School; became Coleman Kids and Bar and Bat Mitzvah; participated in NAwTY and NFTY; were confirmed and attended Senior Study. I remembered when, after bringing our children up as Jews, my wife converted to Judaism at Temple Shalom. And I remembered a time when Temple Shalom felt like family because most of our best friends were Temple members, too – that’s something that has never changed.

Reflecting, two years ago, that my children’s Jewish identities were alive and well, I was grateful to Temple Shalom, because it does take a village to raise a child. Our family had a long-term relationship with

our Temple, and that relationship was worth trying to save. At its core, Temple Shalom was still our family, One Family, a group of people who cared about each other and who cared about Tikkun Olam.

I knew what I wanted to achieve, but I did not know, at the time, that the road on which we were about to embark was called “Relational Judaism.” It was something that Rabbi Miller and I had discussed.

Something we shared with other members, we shared with leadership, we shared with staff. It became clearer and clearer to all of us involved that there was an underlying feeling, an underlying need to become connected (or reconnected), and to create a vibrant force moving forward.

This two-year journey, for me, came to its tipping point with our One Family Kickoff and encounter with Dr. Ron Wolfson. We all felt it in one way or another. This platform that we have built is just one step in the process that will take years to further evolve. There will be ups and downs. There will be mistakes, but they will be outnumbered by our successes. We’re on our way, and we are all in it together. One Family is becoming a reality.

Mothers and Daughters celebrate at a Women’s Seder L’dor v’dor –From generation to generation, we will pass on the stories and history of our matriarchs, the women of the Bible, at our 14th Women’s Seder on April 7, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. Every year women, both Jewish and non-Jewish, gather to celebrate the women in the Bible.

We dance, we sing and we celebrate with our daughters, mothers and grandmothers. We celebrate some old traditions, and we introduce new ones.

The Women’s Seder is a wonderful opportunity for you to develop and share the mother/daughter, aunt/niece, grandmother/granddaughter bonds that you have as you travel together through history and learn about the strengths and character of the women who came before us as we tell the story of Passover.

Jewish women throughout the world celebrate the Passover holiday every year with an evening of ceremony and remembrance led by women for women. For most participants, these gatherings supplement traditional family and community Seder meals that honor the festival. For some, a Women’s Seder is the only connection to Passover observance. For all, this special ritual provides a venue for women’s voices to be heard and their experiences commemorated.

Women’s Seders round out the telling of the Passover story by allowing participants to raise questions and add practices that might be out of place in an ordinary Seder. Indeed, women have written

My name is Bella Nicolau, and I attend school at Pine Ridge Middle School. My interests consist of reading, writing and ballet. When I grow up, I would like to be a criminal law lawyer. My dream is to attend Yale Law School.

Haggadot specifically for use at a women’s Seder; they’ve also created new liturgy and rituals, poems, songs, and commentaries that expand on the conventional haggadah text.

In addition to some of the traditional symbols on the Seder table, you may see some new symbols incorporated into a Women’s Seder as well. One of the symbols, Miriam’s cup, is a new ritual object that is placed on the table beside the Cup of Elijah. It serves as a symbol of Miriam’s Well, the source of water for the Israelites in the desert.

Tambourines, another symbol, are deeply connected to the story of the Exodus as they were used by Miriam and the women when they danced and sang at the shores of the Red Sea after having successfully left Egypt and escaped the Egyptian army. There are other symbols, as well, which will be shared at the Women’s Seder on April 7th.

Temple Shalom’s Sisterhood sponsors the Women’s Seder, and all who attend will enjoy this interactive evening of music, primarily composed by singer and songwriter Debbie Friedman, performed by Cantor Donna Azu, Jane Galler and Lori Cohen. There will be dancing and celebrating with tambourines and other musical instruments, so bring yours along, or we will provide you with some. Following the Seder, there will be a Passover food tasting, so bring your favorite Passover dish to share. This special evening for mothers, daughters, grandmothers, aunts, sisters and women of all ages will leave our guests with a sense of empowerment and admiration for the women of the Bible.

by Suzie Waltzer, Mazkirah (Secretary) of Sababa BBG We’re so happy to have BBYO in Naples, and 2014 began with a great start! We’d like to congratulate our newly elected spring term board members:

Our priority was to get more teens to come to events, which we accomplished! Our first event was a superhero themed movie night, where we watched “The Avengers” and played games. The event was for 8th through 12th graders, and we welcomed all new members as the future of BBYO. “We all had such a fun time at the superhero movie... We had an amazing time planning it too! I love being on the new 2014 board, and through it I have created unbreakable bonds,” said Cloe Feldman, 11th grade.

If I asked you to name your favorite preschool teachers, it would be easy to answer, wouldn’t it? It would bring back so many fond memories of wonderful people who’ve touched both your personal life and your professional life. You would be thinking about people who not only taught you things of value, but inspired you as well.

Temple Shalom Preschool teachers, along with working very hard, almost always have fun. Have you ever noticed how much they laugh while they’re teaching? We always say “we don’t know of any other job we could do and have this much fun. Just think, we get paid for coming here every day and having fun.” Like most teachers, we don’t get paid nearly enough for what we do, but the other rewards that come from good teaching make up for it.

It is that time of the year when we come together to celebrate all the wonderful teachers that may have touched us in some special way. I am so fortunate to have such a wonderful and special staff that makes such a difference in the lives of our preschoolers. Thanks to you all!!

Sisterhood News

by Sandy Stone, Sisterhood President February was a very busy month for Sisterhood, and our events attracted members and guests of all ages. We had a terrific time at Masterpiece Mixers, where we all painted either wine glasses or vases, enjoyed wine and lots of light food, took home our finished pieces of art, and simply had lots of fun being together! This was such a successful program that we are considering repeating it in the future.

On March 12 at Temple, Sisterhood is delighted to present a joint Luncheon with the Men’s Club. A Chinese buffet with desserts provided by us, and once again we will be thrilled to hear and see Jim Sernovitz, this time sharing his trips to South East Asia with all of us. We have been lucky enough to have Jim as our guest before, and we know he can thrill an audience! At this Luncheon, we will also have Sisterhood’s Annual Meeting. Our popular Book Bag will take place on March 18 in the Perman Library at 1:30 p.m. We will be discussing Ronald Balson’s “Once We

The people who attend these meetings always have informative and interesting afternoons and leave thinking about more books to read that are stimulating and fun. Come join us!

Our annual Women’s Seder will be held on Monday, April 7 at 7:00 p.m. at Temple. If you have not attended before, just know that this is a wonderful seder, and the women bring their favorite homemade kosher for Passover dishes to share at the end. BOGO Bring One Give One Feeding the hungry is the Jewish people’s way to perform gemilut hasadim (acts of loving kindness) and tikun olam (to repair the world). Did you know that right here in Naples and the surrounding areas there are people who cannot afford to buy food? Jewish Family and Community Services (JFCS) food pantry and financial assistance programs helps over 100 households put food on their tables. The JFCS food pantry is nonsectarian and is proud to provide food to those in our community who need their assistance. Temple Shalom expands on their Relational Judaism to include those who are food insecure. When you go food shopping and see those weekly specials that we all know as BOGO (Buy One Get One), take advantage of the special and place the free non-perishable foodstuff in the blue non-disposable shopping bag that we give to you to fill on a weekly basis. Bring the filled bag back to Temple either during the week or when you come to Shabbat services. We will then give you an empty bag to refill. Helping those who are food insecure is not a one time thing. Maxine and Harvey Brenner have volunteered along with our 7th grade Religious School students to sort the food and then deliver it to JFCS weekly to help keep the shelves of the food pantry full. Remember, BOGO not only means Buy One Get One. It also means to Bring One Give One for the JFCS food pantry!

Hava Leipzig Holzhauer is the Regional Director for the State of Florida. Contributions to Temple Shalom Showing We Care

Contributions made to the various Temple Shalom funds are wonderful ways to show your appreciation of family and friends, to celebrate happy occasions and to honor the memories of loved ones. We suggest a minimum donation of chai ($18.00). With a minimum donation of $18.00, a notice of your gifts will be sent to the honoree and mention will be published monthly in The Voice.

Operations

General Fund: Donations used for operating expenses.

Tree of Life: Each ‘Rock’ and ‘Star of David’ is a donation of $540.00; each ‘Leaf ’ is $240.00. The contribution must be received in its entirety before engraving is ordered.

Burn The Mortgage Fund: Established by Gerry and Pearl Sugarman to reduce payment of any existing mortgage.

Religious School

Endowment

Religious School Enrichment Fund: Donations augment the Religious School budget to enrich the education of our children.

Scholar In-Residence Endowment Fund: Supports the endowment established by Shirley and Henry Kraus. This fund enables Temple Shalom to bring visiting scholars to the Temple as an educational benefit to the membership.

Religious School: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for Jewish learning in both Sunday and Hebrew Schools.

Polster Religious School Scholarship Fund: To purchase or supplement Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Ben Calmenson Fund: Donations will be used to create sponsorships to send children to attend Camp Coleman.

Rabbi Abraham Shusterman Children's Center Memorial Fund: To support our Religious School and Preschool.

Sisterhood Religious School Scholarship Fund: To provide Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Memorial Fund: Donations made in honor of a loved one who has passed.

Joseph S. Weinfeld Faculty Development Fund: Donations support both curriculum and teaching skill enrichment activities for Sunday and Hebrew School teachers.

William Freschel Kiddush Fund: All donations help provide Kiddush Lunch each Saturday following worship services.

A $150 donation is considered to be a sponsorship to honor a special someone or occasion.

Youth Activities Fund: Donations provide financial support for children of our congregation to attend Camp Coleman, to take part in regional/national youth conventions, and to experience a summer in Israel.

Prayerbook Fund The new minimum contributions to purchase a plaque are Shabbat and High Holiday Books: $50.00 / Pentateuch & Haftarah books: $100.00

Preschool

Flower Fund: Provides Bimah flowers each Shabbat. A $150.00 donation is considered to be a sponsorship in memory or in honor of a special someone or occasion.

Preschool Enrichment Fund: The enhancement of curriculum, educational programs and experiences.

Mitzvah Baskets: A $100.00 donation will purchase several hundred dollars of food for JFCS. Dr. Philip & Shirley Gilbert Music Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement of music at Temple Shalom.

Preschool Fund: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for the Preschool.

Arby Lipman Children's Library: Children and adolescent books and magazine subscriptions, and supplies are purchased.

Jack and Charlotte Ward Family Children's Music Shelf: Audio and video musical tapes for children.

Endowment Fund: Donations help to secure the future, enrich the programs and provide for emergency needs of the congregation.

The Herbert & Ruth Abramson Fund: To supplement the general operating fund and to provide enrichment for Temple functions.

Clergy/Leadership

Rabbi Miller’s Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes, and general enhancement of the Rabbi's work.

Cantor Azu's Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes, and general enhancement of the Cantor's work.

Leadership Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement and enrichment of leadership programs at Temple Shalom.

Library

Rabbi James & Jane Perman Library: Books, magazine subscriptions and supplies are purchased.

Social Action

David and Lillian Thalenfeld Fund for Social Justice: Provides support for Temple participation in social justice events and activities.

Oneg Shabbat: Contact Sandy Stone (Oct. 15 to May 15) or Evelyn Cole (May 16 to Oct. 14) for sponsorship in celebration of an event or to honor someone.

This fund is administered by Temple Shalom Sisterhood.
