Almost 30 years later, the line from Forrest Gump still resonates, “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get.” We understand the simplicity of the image, and relate to the reality that life is often full of surprises. Were the movie being filmed today, a more updated version could be, “Life is not like a Facebook page, it is more than you see…” So much of what we find on social media captures only what the individual wants us to see –the positives from their lives, time with family, and photos that always capture the perfect moment. What we don’t see are the activities outside the frame: the screaming children fighting while the sun sets; the messy room that surrounds the newly added piece of furniture; the lengthy time spent working to perfect makeup and outfit for a “filter-free” photo.
Living in Southwest Florida, we are blessed to be in an area that appears to be paradise. Our lives are filled with natural beauty, from our beautiful beaches and phenomenal weather, to the gorgeous sunsets, as well as more cultural, social and education opportunities than one could possibly attend. Surrounded by all this bounty, we live in a proverbial social media post. Which is why it is important for us to pay heed to what is happening outside the frame of our lives. Even here, in this paradise, there are many struggling with real challenges that may not reflect our own experiences.
A recent Tikkun Olam Volunteers (TOV) forum series on hunger and food insecurity revealed some of these problems in our community. Forum speakers provided some very stark pieces of information:
• Almost 1,000 children in Collier County Public Schools are identified as homeless.
• 10% of Collier County’s population are constantly
food insecure, including 1 in 5 children and 10% of seniors.
• 30-35% of households in Collier and Lee Counties are unable to afford a bare-bones household budget.
• Every local school offers free breakfasts and lunches to all students because so many need assistance they cannot track all the requests.
This information leaves us shocked, realizing how many in our local community face food insecurity or lack stable housing. Our tradition teaches us that we have an obligation to assist those who are in need –specifically instructing our ancestors to share their bounty with those less fortunate. We read in Torah that when harvesting, one was to leave the corners of the fields, as well as anything dropped (known as gleanings), for those less fortunate.
Today we fulfill that responsibility by sharing our resources, talents and time with the Harry Chapin Food Bank, Meals of Hope, and other organizations addressing these critical needs in the community. Join us on March 20 for our next food drive at Temple Shalom. Timed to coincide with Purim, it will be a chance to fulfill one of the mitzvot for the holiday, helping those in need. Those wanting to do more should sign up for the Meals of Hope project on Mitzvah Day, April 24, where we will pack 50,000 meals. Additionally, all of our local agencies are looking for volunteers.
We are grateful to live in paradise. Together, we can work to share our resources and ensure that everyone in our community has something to be grateful for. May our actions plant the seeds for a better tomorrow.
As we enter into the month of March, typically I’m thinking ahead to the holiday of Passover and all the preparation needed to get ready for the seder meal; cleaning out the chametz, organizing my music and choosing a Haggadah. However, this year is a little bit different. Instead of preparing for a seder, my husband, Steve, and I are preparing to welcome our little girl in mid-March.
For us that means we’re packing the hospital bags, installing the car seat, washing the baby clothes, making sure we have enough diapers and putting the final touches on the nursery. In addition, I’m making sure that all of my cantorial, pastoral and teaching obligations are being met while I’m away on my maternity leave. I’m so grateful to my clergy partners, Rabbi Miller and Rabbi Boxman, as well as the the lay leaders who will be taking over my responsibilities while I’m away and taking the much-needed time to bond with my baby and adjust to being a mom.
Thank you all for understanding that I won’t be available for a short time. I look forward to introducing you all to baby Azu very soon!
This month we will officially open registration for summer camp at Temple Shalom Preschool. During the months of June and July, Temple Shalom Preschool is going to be transformed into a summer festival of fun and games!
At Camp Shalom, our campers will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in weekly themes, splash in our water park, tumble, dance, bake and get messy with crafts!
Camp Shalom runs for seven weeks and is specifically targeted to chil¬dren ages 1-5. This year we are also planning to bring back Camp Einstein, our summer program for children in grades Kindergarten - 2nd grade. Returning campers and new participants all look forward to a wide variety of exciting experiences, new friendships and nonstop fun.
At camp this summer there will be something to capture everyone’s interest. Campers participate in water play, tumbling in our indoor gym, arts and crafts, STEAM activities, shopping in our little market (Markolit), cooking, performing arts, foreign language, science and music, all while exercising their creativity, imagination, talent and funny bones.
From animal encounters to Preschool Olympics, our campers are going to not only be kept busy this summer, but they are going to have the time of their lives! If you are looking for a fabulous experience for your child this summer, contact the Temple Shalom Preschool office at 239-455-3227.
For more information, a tour, or anything else, feel free to email our Director, Rabbi Boxman at aboxman@naplestemple.org.
As my term as president nears the end, I would like to thank Don Shapiro and Yale Freeman for approaching me about becoming president one day, many years ago. I would not say this has been an easy role to play at Temple, but I it has been rewarding. I am so lucky to have been able to work with a wonderful clergy term and staff. Working together as a team, our three-legged stool was strong and stable. While the COVID pandemic certainly caused much disruption, and changed many of our carefully laid plans, we have still been able to accomplish much, while doing our best to keep our congregation safe and healthy.
I am proud to say that the Solot Leadership development class is getting started. Thank you to Larry Israelite and Deborah Fidel for making this happen. I am also grateful to Eric Meyers and Abbie Sladick for reviving the mentoring program for new leaders. I was a mentee in that program, run by Dave Rutstein in 2015. Five years later, I was elected President! I look forward to seeing the fruits of their labor, as new people step forward to lead us to even greater heights.
Our Governance Committee revamped the Bylaws and worked on our policies last year. This is work that will continue as our congregation grows and our needs evolve. Our leadership is constantly learning and striving to find new and better ways to serve the congregation and fortify our spiritual home.
One of the most important goals I set for myself as president was to create a succession plan. As I wrote in my last Voice article, Len Teitelbaum, a long-time member, was invited to join the Executive Committee. I am delighted to announce that Len has agreed to stand for election to be the next president of Temple Shalom. His management experience and his Jewish and financial knowledge will serve him well in this role. We are very lucky that he has agreed to serve. When I step down from any leadership position, my goal has always been to find someone to follow me, who will build on my accomplishments and set new and ambitious goals. I know that Len is that person.
I am delighted that the 2020 Strategic Plan will continue to be implemented under Len’s leadership. I know that Len is committed to finding new ways to bring “One Family, Many Connections” to life. Len has been a member at Temple for many years, but if you haven’t met him yet, please introduce yourself when you see him. Thank you.

Many people initially come to synagogue life to provide their children with a Jewish education or to prepare them for a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. When children grow up and leave the home, many adults find themselves re-examining the role that a synagogue can play in their lives. Temple Shalom can still be an important part of your life at any age.
The Temple Shalom Empty Nesters is being created to share the warmth of belonging to an extended family and to celebrate Jewish life within a large community. Our Empty Nesters group will be responsible for developing, arranging, conducting and coordinating social programs, events and meetings for people between the ages of 45 and 65, with or without children at home. Activities could be game nights, dinners, group participation in Temple Shalom’s social events, potlucks – bring your ideas! If
want to get out, make new friends and learn new things, we want to hear from you. Contact Deborah Fidel at dfidel@naplestemple.org.
Ein Gedi, literally “spring of the kid” is an oasis and a nature reserve in Israel, located west of the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth, some 400 m. below sea level, and is near Masada and the Qumran Caves. Ein Gedi was listed in 2016 as one of the most popular nature sites in the country. The site attracts about one million visitors a year.
Extreme heat and aridity prevail in this desert region throughout most of the year. But perennial fresh water springs (Ein is Hebrew for spring) flow down from the high cliffs of the Judean Desert and have made permanent settlement and agriculture possible since ancient times.
Ein Gedi is mentioned in many historical sources and the abundant finds from archeological excavations which have been conducted since the 1960s make it possible to trace the long history of this unique place.
Ein Gedi is notable not only for its breathtaking natural beauty but also for the natural habitation of wildlife. As seen in the Nature and Parks Authority symbol for Ein Gedi, the Nubian Ibed is known to live in the park. In fact, Ein Gedi houses one of the largest herds of Ibex in all of Israel. Besides the Ibex, Ein Gedi is known to house wolves, foxes and bats along with many birds of prey. As you walk throughout Ein Gedi Nature Reserve you will be sure to see some of the wildlife flourishing in the area.
Ein Gedi is a favorite place for tourists and Israelis to visit in Israel, especially during the warm and hot months, where you can relax away from the desert heat and cool off in the springs near David’s waterfall.

For many generations, Jews have made it a custom to remember their loved ones and sanctify their joyous events with a charitable donation. At Temple Shalom, there are several ways for us to remember or honor a loved one and give thanks for milestone events in our lives. Please consider a yahrzeit plaque, Tribute Garden paver, leaf on the Tree of Life, or dedicating a Torah portion in the Illustrated Torah as a permanent remembrance. Your generosity will contribute to the future of Temple Shalom.
Scan the QR codes below with the camera on your cellphone to go directly to an order form, or call the Temple Shalom office for assistance.

C A L L I N G A L L B A K E R S !
Don't forget to leave a note with your name so we know who to thank!
In Isaiah 58:7, God commands us to “share [our] bread with the hungry and bring the homeless into [our] house.”
We just finished three extraordinary adult education forums on hunger and food insecurity:
• Forum #1, presented on December 15, featured Richard LeBer, President and CEO of Harry Chapin Food Bank, and Laura Simmelink, Senior Director of Programs of the Community Foundation of Collier County.
• Forum #2, presented on January 12, featured Dr. Jaclynn Faffer, President/CEO of Naples Senior Center, and Elizabeth Alfaro, Director of Nutrition Services at Collier County Public Schools.
• Forum #3, presented on February 16, featured Madison Mitchell of United Way of Lee County, and Michael Overway, Executive Director of the Hunger and Homeless Coalition of Collier County.
If you missed any one of these forums, you can watch a replay on the Temple Shalom YouTube channel.
Some things we learned from these forums:
• 10% of our neighbors in Lee and Collier County are food insecure, including 20% of children and 10% of seniors.
• Need doesn’t stop at the poverty line – meet ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed). These are families that earn above the federal poverty level but not enough to afford a bare-bones household budget. These are child-care workers, cashiers, salespeople, restaurant workers, office clerks, teachers, health aides, landscapers, law enforcement – you know – the people we all depend on every day!
• 30-35% of households in Collier and Lee Counties are ALICE and poverty. These are not just the folks who live ‘out there’ – they include 15% of the Vineyards residents, 14% of Pelican Bay residents, 27% of Marco Island residents, and 35% of Bonita Springs.
• While the American Rescue Plan of early 2021 helped significantly, the food banks have experienced a HUGE increase in demands due to covid.
Some things we can do:
• Donate food to the food bank at the Food Drive in the Temple Shalom parking lot on March 20
• Make a donation to Temple Shalom dedicated to Meals of Hope for Mitzvah Day
• Volunteer at the Harry Chapin Food Bank, Senior Center food pantry, Community Foundation of Collier County, your local school system, or St. Matthew’s House.
• Deliver Meals on Wheels
• Participate in the Meals of Hope meal packing on Mitzvah Day (Sunday, April 24)
• Paint bowls for Empty Bowls Naples
• Fund microfinancing food projects around the world
• Support MAZON B’nai Mitzvah projects
• Advocate food policy/food justice, for example, food stamps (SNAP) and childhood nutrition
Hopefully, we can eventually change public policy, to ensure that no one goes hungry in America. For today, at least, let’s try to just provide our neighbors with food for a meal. Donate to the Food collection in the Temple parking lot on Sunday, March 20, from 9:00am -11:00am.
Contributions to Temple Shalom funds are wonderful ways to show your appreciation of family and friends, to celebrate happy occasions and to honor the memories of loved ones. We suggest a minimum donation of chai ($18.00). With a minimum donation of chai, a notice of your gift will be sent to the honoree and mention will be published in The Voice. To make a donation, visit the donation page on the website at www.naplestemple.org, or call the Temple office at 239-455-3030.
