RABBI’S MESSAGE
Rabbi
Adam F. Miller
Welcome to Spring! While some places in the country wait for the snow to clear and new signs of life, we already welcomed our annual symbol of renewal – the start of baseball’s spring training! Hundreds of professional athletes, surrounded by their thousands of fans, swarm to our region for this ritual routine. Whether you root for the Red Sox, Twins, or the team of your choice, one recognizes that spring training offers teams an opportunity to explore new possibilities. After a long off-season, teams use this time to find the right lineups and combinations they believe will lead to success. Over the course of weeks, a general manager will determine which players are ready to play at the highest level, as well as those whose talents may not suit the team’s plans. While the baseball teams try to identify the best roster for a run to the World Series, work is underway at Temple Shalom to explore the best use of our own resources as we plan for our future. Our congregation has grown tremendously in the last few years, giving us an opportunity to reflect upon our direction and vision for the future. We began a governance task force earlier this year to explore how we could improve our internal structure, by-laws and operating procedures. A separate strategic planning group started meeting in January to identify the areas where we see potential for positive development and growth at Temple Shalom while staying true to our mission. In addition to those efforts that impact across the congregation, other committees are also looking ahead. The Tikkun Olam Council started two new task forces – one to explore sustainability and environmental impact at Temple Shalom,
and another on accessibility for those with disabilities. Rabbi Boxman welcomes interested adult learners to plan and shape the future of our education programming. Shalom Chaverim – our cohort of Shabbat greeters -- seek new participants, so that they can expand the One Family experience for all who come to the congregation. The amazing thing about spring training is that teams engage in long-term planning, and at the same time provide an exciting product for fans to enjoy. The same is true at Temple Shalom – our looking ahead takes place while we continue to provide opportunities for meaningful learning, engagement, and Jewish life. Highlights this month include Rabbi Andrea Weiss, professor and provost at Hebrew Union College, as well as the co-editor of the Women’s Torah commentary, visiting March 20-22 as our Shirley(z”l) and Henry Kraus Scholar-in-Residence. We celebrate Purim with a carnival and spiel on March 1, and joyful reading of the Megillah on March 9. Not to mention the Men’s Club annual event at Broadway Palm on March 14, featuring a performance this year of Kinky Boots. Flip through the pages of this edition of The Voice and you will find dozens of other events and activities happening this month alone! Spring has indeed sprung – with life at Temple Shalom and a bright future ahead. Time to play ball and find your connections in our One Family. L’Shalom, Rabbi Adam Miller

CANTOR’S MESSAGE
Cantor
Donna Azu The Tanakh (Jewish Bible), states the following about the holiday of Purim: “Consequently, these days recalled and observed in every generation: by every family, every province, and every city. And these days of Purim shall never cease among the Jews, and the memory of them shall never perish among their descendants” (Esther 9:28). According to Jewish tradition, we remember the miracles of Purim by means of four mitzvot (commandments). The first mitzvah is the Megillah reading, to hear the Book of Esther read twice — night and morning. While listening to the Purim story, it is traditional to shake a grogger, noisemaker at every mention of Haman’s name, to drown it out. The noise also helps to keep people focused on the reading. The second commandment is to give gifts of food to friends and family (Mishloach Manot/Shalach Manos), containing at least two different types of ready-to-eat food items. The third is Matanot La’evyonim, to give charity (tzedakah) to the poor. Giving to the poor is a mitzvah all year round. However, the mitzvah to do so on Purim is in addition to the general mitzvah of tzedakah. To properly fulfill the mitzvah, one must give to two poor individuals. Although one may fulfill this mitzvah by giving a very minimal amount of money to each person, the sages noted that the highest form of fulfilling this mitzvah is by giving enough money for a meal, or the equivalent in food. The last mitzvah is to eat a festive meal. It is customary to prepare and enjoy a festive meal on Purim day (Seudat Purim), complete with wine, challah, and dessert. The feast of Purim comes from feasting in the story of Purim itself. In fact, the story begins with a six month long party for the palace staff thrown by the king, followed by a weeklong party for the whole kingdom of Shushan. 4
Wine is a part of every Jewish celebration, but Purim is the only holiday in which drinking to excess is acceptable. Even on Pesach where we are required to drink four cups of wine, we are warned to be careful not to become intoxicated. In fact, the Talmud actually says, “Drink until you can’t tell the difference between ‘Cursed is Haman; blessed is Mordechai’.” Why would this be included? It is thought that drinking lowers inhibitions and allows the joy hidden within to be revealed. This parallels God being hidden in the story and the miracles revealed when Esther discloses her Jewish identity to the king. Later, the plans of the evil Haman are thwarted by Queen Esther at the second of two feasts she hosted for the king and Haman. To celebrate the victory of the Jewish people against the plans to destroy them, the end of the Book of Esther includes directions to eat a festive meal. The rabbis of the Talmud reiterate this as one of the four mitzvot of Purim. This year at Temple Shalom we will celebrate Purim on Sunday, March 1. At 10:30am we’ll present our Purim Spiel, “I Guess That’s Why They Call it a Spiel,” based on the music of Elton John, followed by our carnival at 11:15am. I look forward to celebrating this joyous holiday with you! Purim S’meach! Cantor Donna Azu

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
Executive Director Deborah R. Fidel
Our community continues to grieve the horrific loss of life from one of the most devastating acts of anti-Semitism in American Jewish history. We struggle to process a new reality following the Pittsburgh and Poway tragedies – one that has us living at a time when, across the United States, anti-Semitic incidents are reaching historic levels. In 2018, there were 1,879 recorded attacks against Jews and Jewish institutions, according to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). That was the third-highest year on record since the 1970s, when the ADL first started tracking anti-Semitic attacks. These issues have led to a re-evaluation of our facility’s security to ensure that buildings and open spaces are as safe as possible, while remaining welcoming. Adequately addressing security measures requires continuous attention, knowledge and funding. Temple Shalom remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all who wish to pray, study and participate in the life of our community. Temple Shalom is a gathering place for families, friends, young and young at heart. It is a sacred space where we celebrate our heritage and connect as a community in joy and sorrow. Unfortunately, our changing world demands a different level of building security to support safely coming together. We need to invest in an up-to-date security system that allows congregants to feel safe and secure with full access to the building. The vitality and vibrancy of our Temple community depends on Temple Shalom’s ability to maintain a safe physical space. Temple Shalom is holding a special campaign dedicated to the security of our building. These funds will contribute to the increasing cost of armed security, and will support efforts to strengthen and heighten security on our campus with additional target hardening physical assets such as advanced surveillance cameras and improved access control systems.Together, we can continue to ensure that our community is strong, vibrant, resilient, and safe. Many of you have already responded generously. Thank you very much. If you have not donated yet, please consider doing so today. L’Shalom Deborah Fidel

WE ARE STRONG SECURITY CAMPAIGN We Are Strong Security Campaign Join us in creating a safer and more prepared Temple Shalom. Our world turned upside down in October 2018 with the shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh. That event brought into sharp relief the recent rise in hate crimes and anti-Semitic rhetoric across our nation and throughout the world. The subsequent shooting in Poway, California, the recent stabbing in Monsey, NY, and the continued rise of anti-Semitic attacks heighten our awareness of the situation around us. In Torah, we read of an insidious attack made by Amalek on the Israelites – targeting the weakest and most vulnerable members of their community. After the incident, Moses instructs the people that they must remember and never forget what has taken place. Our sages understand this to mean that we have an obligation to learn from past tragedies, and better prepare ourselves for the future. In light of current events, and with this teaching in mind, we have launched a special security campaign to pay for immediate infrastructure upgrades and to fund the ongoing expense of security officers at Temple Shalom. We aim to protect all of us – especially the children who represent our future. How can you help? We are focused on a proactive approach while ensuring that we have the best facilities, training, and protocols possible to keep our community safe and prepared. Providing enhanced security details as well as making structural changes will require significant resources. Please consider donating to our Security Campaign. Your contribution will help us ensure a safe and vibrant community for you, your family, friends and neighbors. Specific security needs have been identified, and you will have the opportunity to give toward those goals. However you choose to support this effort, know that your gift will make a positive impact – increasing the safety and security of all who enter our doors.
The time is now. Please join us by making a pledge today. Help us reach our goal of $200,000. L’Shalom,

Happy March from BBYO! In January, Naples BBYO gathered with teens from across the North Florida Region at MIT/AIT LTI (Member in Training/Aleph in Training Leadership Training Institute) in Lake Placid, Florida. Nearly fifteen Naples teens joined us for this very exciting weekend-long convention where teens learned new leadership skills, interacted with Jewish friends and speakers, and were introduced to their big/little! In late January, Naples teens kicked off the term at a hockey game featuring the Everblades. We had nearly twenty teens gather for this event from Naples and Ft. Myers. It was a blast!
This month, Naples teens will have two programs; one for girls only and one for boys only. The former program will be a stargazing sleepover for the girls on Saturday, March 28. The latter program will be a video game extravaganza for the boys on Sunday, March 29. For more information about these events, contact Jess Zimmerman. To be added to our email list and receive updates about BBYO programming, simply email Jessica Zimmerman at jesszimmerman@bbyo.org. We hope to hear from you and welcome you to BBYO Naples.

CONNECT WITH US “Shalom Chaverim” means “hello friends” in Hebrew. Shalom Chaverim is also the name of an exciting volunteer opportunity at Temple Shalom where Temple volunteers welcome members and guests who come to Temple Shalom for worship, learning and social opportunities. Temple Shalom is focused on inclusivity, diversity, openness and welcoming, and as such, Shalom Chaverim is a cadre of greeters welcoming and assisting members and guests to our Temple for Erev Shabbat and High Holy Day services. Aside from welcoming people, we help them with their name tags or badges, provide directions, assist with seating, prayer books, or hearing assisted devices. If you are interested in volunteering and becoming a part of Shalom Chaverim, please contact Andy Karpman at andy.karpman@gmail.com. Signing up to be a greeter in the lobby or in the Sanctuary is easy and only takes a few minutes. We are a congregation dedicated to “Audacious Hospitality” and to helping our members connect and engage. Being part of Shalom Chaverim is fun and you will be making a difference to all of those visiting our temple by helping to make their experience at Temple Shalom warm and welcoming. BEADING FOR BETTERMENT March 11 & 18 at 12:30pm Beading for Betterment is a project of Temple Shalom, designed to build on and expand our Temple’s commitment to support our greater community. Participants are invited to bead necklaces for children who attend the Guadalupe Center in Immokalee to give to their mothers and grandmothers as gifts. The cost is $18, free if you bring your own supplies. Contact Carol Hirsch at chirsch1951@gmail.com to RSVP.
Bereavement Group for Members of the Temple Shalom Community In the spirit of our tradition, which calls us to perform the mitzvah of Nihum Avelim (comforting mourners), Temple Shalom will be offering a Bereavement Support Group for people who are grieving for a loved one. The group, which will observe confidentiality of communication, will meet on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month from 9:30am to 11:00pm. Group size is limited to twelve people. The facilitators, Arline Kaplan, Ph.D., and Leslie Wasserman, M.A., are members of Temple Shalom. Both Arline and Leslie, licensed in New York and Michigan respectively, have extensive experience with groups and with people experiencing grief and loss. “We are hopeful that sharing our stories with empathic, compassionate others will allow some healing, solace and peace into our lives. We can each be the gift that can possibly help to heal the wound.” Feedback from groups members has been positive:
“I feel better after attending this group.” “We are all at different places, but I see ourselves evolving.” “The facilitators are professionals.” “I’m confortable that this is private. I can say whatever is on my mind.” “I’ve learned so much being in this group.” “It has been a pleasure to meet the people in this group.”
Please email Ana Maria Tamargo at atamargo@naplestemple.org to sign up. There is no fee for this program. 15
CONNECT WITH US YOUR Vote Is Needed! Please Vote Today. Every five years we have an opportunity to vote for delegates to the World Zionist Congress. In October, 500 delegates will meet in Jerusalem to make decisions about how $5 billion will be allocated in Israel and other countries. Jews in the United States can elect up to 145 delegates - and greatly influence how that money will be spent. In 2015, the ARZA/Reform slate received 39% of the votes and 56 delegates, resulting in $4 million a year ($20 million over five years) of funding for the Reform Movement in Israel and the issues we care about, including religious freedom and equality, and support for Reform synagogues and education. We need your help in electing ARZA/Reform delegates. Voting is open until March 11, 2020 and takes only 90 seconds. (There is an administrative fee of $7.50.) Visit www.zionistelection.org and “Vote Reform”.

Camden F. Karen, is an amazing person who exudes kindness, compassion and empathy. He strives to excel at his interests. Though he is quite nervous, he is equally excited to become a Bar Mitzvah. His parents could not be more proud of the young man he is becoming and are eager to see what greatness his future holds. Those who have the privilege of having Camden in their lives are lucky because he is a true mensch, he will put others before himself every time.

SISTERHOOD WOW! What a successful Maj Jongg Tournament! Can you believe we had an attendance of 150 women and 1 gentleman playing at one time in the Social Hall? I would like to thank Carol Flegel for chairing this program with Bunny Kaufman, Phyllis Titlebaum, Natalie Berman, Barbara Steinberg and Shelly Baron. We had Sister’s Night Out at Paula Brody’s Inspirations Art Gallery and learned about the artists who have their art on display.

Sisterhood and Men’s Club co-sponsored a luncheon featuring The Jim Sernovitz Travelogue. Jim took us through his travels in Africa. If you need to go on an interesting adventure, Africa is the place to go. I was at a destination wedding in Africa and it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. A delicious Chinese buffet filled out the menu and I think we all ate too much.
The Alta Rockers Band is featured at the next Sisterhood luncheon coming up on Tuesday, March 17 . From what I’ve heard they are a fun group. I think we will be R-O-C-K-I-N’ with their music. Count Your Blessings Sisterhood is also having an Afternoon Tea with Sara Charney, First Vice President of WRJ (Women of Reformed Judaism). Since we support this organization, she will talk about what they can provide for Temple Shalom Sisterhood. A portion of Sisterhood membership dues goes to this Organization. I think we should work with them more if we can.

MEN’S CLUB
Men’s Club President
Can’t believe it is March already? February saw us engaged in the joint luncheon with the Sisterhood and participating in the New Member Shabbat Dinner. We also sponsored a Hockey Night and a two part discussions on Jewish Genes. Our annual major fundraiser (dinner and entertainment at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre) will be on March 14. The show will be “Kinky Boots.” If you haven’t seen it, you definitely need to for real enjoyment. If you have seen it, you know you need to see it again. This event is always a great experience for the participants and helps us raise the funds we need to continue supporting the Temple and the Religious School. Whether you attend or not, consider taking out an advertisement or being a patron in the program book (see information on next page).
In April, please join us for Men’s Club Shabbat on the Friday, the 24th at 7:30pm. On April 29, we will be hosting a Men’s Club and congregation favorite, “Deli Night.” This is a time to Ron Yasbin schmooze, eat Jewish soul food and listen to a presentation by a speaker from AIPAC. On May 2, we will be having Baseball Night at Hammond Stadium (fireworks night). This is a great opportunity for our members, their families and friends to get together, see a game, eat and watch fireworks. At the game, we will be hosting students from Grace Place as a reward for their outstanding accomplishments. The Men’s Club will be working with our clergy and with BBYO to develop programs that fully serve our entire membership and that encourage engagement by a greater diversity within our Temple community. Early proposals include hosting of Sunday brunches for dads/guardians of students in the school/preschool, chocolate seder, Tu BiShvat seder, and a mentor program for students. We are seeking ideas and advice on how to accomplish our goals as well as comments on the proposals. Please feel free to contact me with your suggestions and comments (ryasbin@att.net). As always, give serious thought to becoming an active leader within the Men’s Club. Don’t forget our ongoing activities such as the Alamo Range group, tennis, and golf. Happy Purim from the Men’s Club! Ron

TIKKUN OLAM
Tikkun Olam Council Chair Ken Goldstein
I’ve always been amazed, and disappointed, by voter turnout here in the United States. Only approximately 56% of the 245.5 million Americans ages 18 and older who were eligible to vote in November 2016 actually voted. We rank 26 out of 32 members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), most of whose members are highly developed, democratic states.* As Thomas Jefferson wrote, “We do not have government by the majority. We have government by the majority who participate.” Voting is important whether you are a Republican, Democrat or Independent. If you are not registered to vote, or not sure whether you are registered, you can check the Florida Department of State here, registertovoteflorida.gov/home. Here is something I came across from Rabbi Paul Kipnes. Some very powerful words… Vote Because it’s a mitzvah to do Vote Because you’re an American Jew Vote Because it’s your civic duty Vote To bring the world more values, more beauty Vote Because you’ll be guiding the nation Vote Because not voting is an abdication Vote Because more important than your chatter Vote You’re representing values that really matter Vote For our Jewish values that encompass Vote Torah’s call for chesed (kindness), rachamim (compassion) and tzedek (justice)
Vote Do not be numb Vote Because it’s part of tikkun olam Vote (Especially if you’re a thirty- or twenty-something) Vote (Because yes, your vote actually means something) Vote Your ballot will require time to peruse Vote Then check off whomever you choose Vote Instead of lying awake Vote Because there’s too much at stake Vote Because you’re an American Jew Vote And make sure your friends and your kids (if you have them) vote too
For more information about the Tikkun Olam Council (TOC) please contact Ken Goldstein at kengoldstein@mac.com. *www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2018/05/21/u-s-voter-turnout-trails-most-developed-countries/
