CLERGY MESSAGE

Rabbi

Adam F. Miller Since 1998, the majority of my summers included time at a Jewish overnight camp as staff or faculty. Many of my favorite memories and friendships link back to time at a camp including that first summer when I met Jennifer. This would have been my 8th summer on faculty at URJ Camp Coleman, as well as Jonah and Gabriel’s 5th time as full campers. Among the losses experienced due to COVID-19 was the cancellation of all URJ summer camps nationally, and almost every other camp across the country. Why do I spend so much time at camp? It’s definitely not for the food or the five-star accommodations. Jewish overnight camps, particularly URJ camps with clergy and educators on faculty, provide a magical and transformative experience for our youth. In recent years, camp emerged as a key for Jewish continuity. Jewish kids, who often live in areas where they are in the minority, have the opportunity to spend time in a place where they are part of the majority. They can look around and see other kids who share their story, know how to use the words “kvetch” and chutzpah correctly, and recognize what a real bagel should taste like. As we enter this summer in the shadow of COVID-19, it is important to note that Jewish camp also teaches children a lesson that holds meaning for all of us. Overnight camp demonstrates that being Jewish is not compartmentalized and limited to attendance in Religious School. Rather, one’s Jewish identity extends beyond the synagogue walls to all aspects of life. In addition to marking rituals like Shabbat, camp creates a safe space for young adults to explore their Jewish identity and live in an environment shaped by Jewish values. Campers learn that their Jewish identity plays a role in how they interact with others and the choices they make. This critical message enables them to develop into young Jewish adults who embrace their heritage and identity. For many years, the modern synagogue served as the ritual, cultural and educational center for the community. Consider how many programs, worship experiences, and learning opportunities take place at Temple Shalom over the course

of a year. Between our own congregational activities and the offerings of outside groups who use our space, one could be at Temple almost seven days a week! Given that situation, there was considerable trepidation across the community when we learned it would be necessary for the safety and health of all to close the building and limit physical interactions. Could we sustain our community and our Jewish engagement outside our facility? Modern technology, in the form of Zoom, Facebook, Facetime, and YouTube, became the camp for all of us. These remote engagement tools enabled us to realize the power of One Family and a Jewish community beyond the walls of our synagogue. Our Jewish engagement not only remained strong, it has grown over the last two months. Many individuals who could not attend services previously, now experience our livestream weekly in their homes. Hundreds watch our classes and programs each week, able to tune in live or watch at a later time. Phone calls, Facetime and Zoom make it possible for us to meet and stay in touch, keeping alive the feeling of community. This summer, when there is no camp, and limited physical engagement, know that our Jewish experiences will live on. We will be offering more content this summer than ever before as technology enables us to bridge the gap for all those who leave Naples during the steamy months. In this issue, you will find a myriad of new and exciting ways to stay connected. Until the time when we can safely gather again, I look forward to seeing you online (or being seen by you!). May you and those you love, stay safe, healthy, and remember to wash your hands. L’Shalom, Rabbi Adam Miller

CLERGY MESSAGE

Cantor

Donna Azu

As we begin to adjust to our new normal of social distancing and online learning, it is my pleasure to share that I have re-started our monthly Rosh Chodesh gatherings for women. Rosh Chodesh, which means “head of the month” was a reward given to the women of Israel because they refused to surrender their jewelry for the creation of the Golden Calf. Because of their righteousness, the women were exonerated from working on Rosh Chodesh. Since then, Rosh Chodesh has become an especially meaningful day for Jewish women. It has blossomed into a celebration of women and femininity. Women throughout Jewish history have celebrated Rosh Chodesh by taking a break from their everyday lives and gathering together to celebrate the new month and our lives as Jewish women. We celebrate Rosh Chodesh by exploring different aspects of the feminine Jewish experience, create lasting friendships and exploring topics relevant to our lives as Jewish women. I hope you’ll join me on Tuesday, June 23 at 4:00pm for our first gathering via Zoom to welcome the month of Tamuz. I look forward to seeing you! L’Shalom Cantor Donna Azu

RABBI EDUCATOR’S MESSAGE

Rabbi Educator Ariel Boxman

A Summer of ReJEWvenation As summer rolls in, virtual schooling comes to a close and people begin to return to a sense of normalcy, let us use the summer months to do what I like to call, “reJEWventation”. While many of us take a break in the summer from school and work, it does not mean that we take a break from Judaism. In fact, the summer is wonderful time to rejuvenate our Jewish identity. So how, you may ask, would one go about doing this “reJEWvenation”? Here are five ways I suggest: 1. Explore Jewish home rituals with your family and choose one to try during the summer months. This could be lighting Shabbat candles on Friday night, kissing the mezuzah when entering the home, taking a Shabbat walk on Saturday afternoons, or saying the shema before bedtime. Trying out a new ritual is a great way to “reJEWvenate” and possibly find a renewed connection to God and Judaism. 2. Practice your Hebrew by labeling parts of your house with their corresponding Hebrew words (ie. kitchen table = shulchan, bed = meeta, door = delet, etc.). Just seeing the Hebrew letters and vocabulary around the house will automatically increase comprehension and familiarity. Email me at aboxman@naplestemple.org for a document with these pre-made Hebrew labels ready to be cut out and taped around the house! 3. Get caught up in some fascinating Israeli TV Series. Check out this link for suggestions. 4. Read a book with a Jewish theme. Click here for some suggestions. 5. Learn some modern Hebrew vocabulary and pick up basic conversational skills by purchasing and downloading Rosetta Stone Hebrew on your iPad or computer. It is a great program which will help you become familiar with Modern Hebrew and get you ready to navigate Israel on your next trip to the Holy Land! I want to wish you all a wonderful summer and please be in touch if you need any help or guidance in “reJEWvenating” your summer months! L’Shalom, Rabbi Ariel Boxman

LEADERSHIP MESSAGE

Executive Director Deborah R. Fidel

One thing that is certain during these uncertain times, is the importance of One Family. I feel such incredible gratitude for and pride in all the ways that our members have been present for each other over these past three months. Your presence magnified the special, joyful moments that we shared, such as the Community Passover Seder, online Zoom bar and bat mitzvah celebrations, weekly Havdalah service and the Shavuot Cheesecake Drive-Thru. Your presence helped those who are mourning in our midst feel a little less alone, by gathering for shiva online when we could not comfort one another in person. Your presence has provided much needed community on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings for those among us who want to say Kaddish and observe a yahrzeit. The presence of your children at weekly Tot Shabbats brought joy to their teachers and parents. Your children brought smiles and laughter to each other by participating with enthusiasm. Your presence as a Shalom Cares team member has provided connection and care to our older members and those living alone. Your presence as a member who has helped with a grocery run for someone in need, brought homecooked meals to those recovering from illness, penned a handwritten note of comfort or congratulations has made our caring concrete and real in the lives of others. Your presence for Shalom Chef, trivia nights, music concerts, Happy Hours, Coffee Talks with the Clergy, Torah study, One Spark at a Time, The History of the Jewish People and other online classes has enabled us to lift one another’s spirits and share our passions. It is such a joy to see one another and spend time together in so many different ways. There is no question that we all need a spiritual, caring community at this time. Temple Shalom has been present for you, and we are so grateful that you have been present for us and for each other. We are about to begin a new fiscal year on July 1. That means that we’ll be sending out L’Shalom pledge requests soon. We want to ensure that we continue to be here for everyone, and that no one is left behind. Your support means that we can continue to meet our financial obligations, maintain our facility and programming, and support those in our midst who may be struggling. I am confident that our Congregation’s strength, resilience and positive spirit will enable us to withstand and overcome the challenges we’re currently facing and emerge more united than ever. Together, with your support and your help, we will prepare for the year ahead, and continue to be present in each other’s lives. L’Shalom, Deborah R. Fidel 6

LEARN WITH US

Director of Preschool Susan Feld, Ed.S.

Many parents and caregivers are wondering how to discuss COVID-19 with their young children, and perhaps if it’s important to do so. Children have faced many sudden changes in their daily lives and routines due to the pandemic. These sudden changes can be traumatic and may continue to affect our youth long after the threat has passed. Children who have experienced trauma are known to sometimes have long term psychological effects. Studied traumas include: parents separating, wildfires, hurricanes, death of a loved one and prolonged illness in a family. Though it is unknown how the pandemic will unfold, we have the opportunity to support our children and mitigate their fears. The manner in which families have dealt with these events may provide a blueprint for guiding children through this unprecedented circumstance. One tried and true method of supporting children has always been to read to them. Research has shown that reading has many positive effects on young children. Reading to a child expands vocabulary, teaches the rules of syntax, and helps build a bond between parent and child. Reading is also one way for children to process difficult feelings and identify emotions. Reading can provide a safe space for children to ask questions and for parents to use children’s literature as a starting point for challenging conversations. NAEYC, the National Association of Education for Young Children, has posted a new children’s book for families:

8

Something Strange Happened in My City: A Social Story About the Coronavirus Pandemic for Children by Dr. Shu-Chen Jenny Yen, California State University The website The Insider has a list of books to help children cope with school closings, not seeing friends, and feeling anxious. Several health organizations and children’s book publishers have partnered to produce books designed especially for children that you can view or download free from the Indianapolis Public Library. These titles, which are listed below, can be comfortable conversation starters to talk to young children about viruses, illness, and good habits for wellness. The challenge as a parent is to continue to be a calm and trusted grown-up during uncertain times when adults are also scared and confused. This means providing children with age appropriate and accurate information as well as being a consistent emotional foundation from which children will begin to explore their own thoughts and feelings. Reading a book, though a simple gesture, is the perfect vehicle for starting this process. L’Shalom, Susan Feld

CONNECT WITH US

ETIQUETTE REMINDERS Using Zoom for our meetings and webinars has enabled us to stay connected during this unique period. We need your help to ensure our online gatherings run safely and smoothly.

DISPLAY YOUR REAL, FULL NAME Meeting leaders and your fellow participants need to know who is online with us. Make sure you are displaying your real, full name (e.g., Bob Shapiro, NOT Bob or Uncle Bob). Some meetings will use the “Waiting Room” feature in Zoom. If the host doesn’t know who you are, s/he will not admit you to the meeting. You need to update the name in your Zoom profile BEFORE joining your next Temple Shalom meeting or webinar.

MUTE YOURSELF IF YOU AREN’T SPEAKING Background noise, side conversations, and whispering are very distracting in group meetings. Also, any noise you make (e.g., moving a chair, sniffling, etc.) causes your screen to become the main/ speaker screen in a Zoom meeting. Mute yourself when you join a meeting, and unmute only when you are speaking.

TURN OFF VIDEO IF YOU ARE MOVING AROUND Video meetings allow you to do all sorts of things while being online. However, your movements, including background activity, are very distracting to others. If you aren’t in a controlled environment or if you need to move around, please turn your video off. If you need to do something private (e.g., use the restroom), MAKE SURE YOUR VIDEO IS OFF! You don’t want to be the next viral video.

BE CAREFUL WHEN POSTING MESSAGES The chat features allows you to share messages with everyone in a meeting/webinar or private messages with specific individuals. EXERCISE CAUTION BEFORE YOU HIT ENTER! You do not want to send a private message to all participants in a meeting.

Havurah Happenings By Debbie Zvibleman

While we all negotiate a new normal with social distancing, it is important to stay in touch with our members and come up with virtual events. In my own Havurah, Andy and Di Karpman were in charge of this month’s event. As we were getting close, I called and asked what they were going to do. I felt it was important for us all to see each other. Andy said he was concerned that members may not want to participate as we’re not in person. I told him to come up with something that is interactive that we could do on Zoom. Prior to our event, we got instructions for each of us to have a 5 x 7 card and on one side put yes and no on the other. We were given the Zoom link and I anxiously awaited our event. Six out of eight couples were able to make the event. We all showed that we had cards made and greeted each other. We were told that we were going to be asked questions and that each of us should hold up our cards, yes or no, in answer to the question. We had questions, as to things that we had done, such as sports (surfing, diving, bungee jumping, etc and health items, such as broken bones, fainting, etc. You get the idea.) Whoever said yes, explained what happened. This was a great exercise to get us to know each other even more and share some funny stories too. While this might not have been the event that was originally planned (we were going to get a tour of the Holocaust Museum), we got to spend time together. Feel free to copy this example or come up with other things you can do, such as a book review, doing wine tasting, sharing Shabbat dinner or Havdalah. The most important thing is to be together and when we feel it is safe to be meeting in person, we carry on knowing that we can get through anything as long as we are together!

Our Melton Havurah by Susan Pittelman

Flexibility has been key to scheduling the gatherings of the Melton Havurah. We have switched from taking field trips and going to lectures (combined with a meal, of course!) to meeting through Zoom. Our most recent Zoom gathering, which was on May 18, began with a special “anniversary toast” to Roz & Al Katz and Ann & Sam Varsano on their 51st Wedding Anniversaries! And what did we toast them with? The very special “French 75” cocktail we each made using a recipe supplied by our Havurah’s resident “bartender and cocktail connoisseur, Al Katz. Some of our conversation addressed such topical questions as: • How do you handle your mail? ( You really microwave it? ), • Have you eaten at any restaurants that feel “especially safe”? and • Do you have plans to return to your home up North? The main focus of our gathering, however, was to share the names of books that we enjoyed reading. Click here for the list of books that were recommended. We hope that you enjoy reading them as much as the members of the Melton Havurah did! 14

The Results of the WZC Elections Are In! Vote Reform/ARZA Comes Out on Top! The World Zionist Congress (WZC) is the legislative body of the World Zionist Organization (the “Parliament of the Jewish People”). The Congress meets every five years in Jerusalem and the decisions that the Congress makes influences hundreds of millions of dollars in funding and paid portfolios. Because of YOUR votes, Vote Reform/ARZA came out on top in the recent election, garnering 31,500 votes out of 123,629 votes. As a result, we will secure 56 delegates to the 38th World Zionist Congress. This will put ARZA in the position to lead a powerful progressive block and continue its work in the name of our Reform values: pluralism, equality, and freedom. Here are some more details: • ARZA came in first place with nearly 10,000 votes more than the second place slate. In comparison to the last election in 2015, Vote Reform/ARZA increased votes by nearly 50% with 10,000 new voters. (ARZA also came in first place in 2015!) This confirms that Reform Jews care deeply about creating a Jewish, democratic Israel that values pluralism, equality, and freedom. • Over 120,000 Jews in the U.S. voted in this election, which is more than double the voter turnout for the 2015 election and the highest number of votes in the 30 years of history for this election. (While voting was conducted primarily online at ZionistElection.org, thousands of paper ballots were also sent in by postal mail.)

MEN’S CLUB June will hopefully bring renewal of daily life, at least to a point. The Men’s Club has been active during this past month, while taking appropriate precautions in regard to the pandemic and the consequences. The Board authorized the distribution of $2,000 worth of gift cards to health workers in the Greater Naples area. Some of those funds coming directly from specific member donations. In addition, one of our members contributed $2,000 to local food banks in honor of the Men’s Club. We want to thank Burton Hirsch, Marc Fleischer and Len Teitelbaum for their generosity. For the coming year, we have recommitted to provide financial support to the Religious School and Preschool as well as for the youth of our community. The Men’s Club will continue to work with BBYO and our clergy to help address the problem of antisemitism in the schools as well as in the community. The ADL has just reported that in 2019, Florida saw a 20% increase in antisemitic activities over the previous year. Many of these incidences were aimed at our children.

Men’s Club President Ron Yasbin

As our normal activities return, we are mindful that in order to succeed we need the continued support of our membership. When the call for Men’s Club membership goes out this summer, please remember to renew or join for the first time. In addition, we are in need of additional members for the Board. If you are interested, please contact me. Keep safe and healthy.

Men’s Club delivers gift cards to Physicians Regional. Ed Cohen and Ron Yasbin deliver gift cards to NCH.

Very happy healthcare workers receive gift cards from the Men’s Club of Temple Shalom.

SISTERHOOD Social Distancing is a Royal Pain. But it is necessary. Zoom has become everyone’s friend.

Sisterhood President

Karen Cohn

Our new Sisterhood Board was installed via Zoom in late April. Rabbi Miller conducted the Installation, followed by a beautiful song that was sung by Cantor Azu. I want to thank the dedicated women who completed their terms on our board—we appreciate all that you have done for Sisterhood.

2020-2021 Temple Shalom Sisterhood I am excited to be working with our new Sisterhood Board. We Board of Directors President: Karen Cohn Executive Vice President: Barbara Druckman Vice President of Fundraising: Bunny Kaufman Vice President of Programming: Jackie Sherman Vice President of Membership: Lynn Prosten Electronic Communications Secretary: Judy Ciorciari Recording Secretary: Nancy Brother Corresponding Secretary: Joan Friedman Treasurer: Pam Schoen Director: Natalie Berman Director: Susan Pittelman Director: Linda Wainick Immediate Past President: Carole Flegel Serving on the Board as Committee Chairs: Oneg: Sandy Stone Book Bag: Linda Wainick Committee Chair: Shelly Baron Committee Chair: Barbara Steinberg Judaica Shop: Carol Wolfe

held our first Zoom Board Meeting in early May. Zoom meetings are a little more to the point, since “side meetings” are eliminated. It’s just like school—you have to raise your hand if you want to be heard. Meetings are precise and very efficient. Don’t get me wrong, I love seeing my board around the table, instead of on a screen! Our Sisterhood Board is planning a wonderful year for our members, although the Social Distancing requirement is making it difficult to plan. Bunny Kaufman, Vice President of Fundraising, has been working with her committee to plan fantastic Mah Jongg and Canasta events. They will depend on when we get back to some normalcy. We will have to wait and see what the future brings.

Fran Nossen and her committee are getting ready to launch our “Honey from the Heart” fundraiser. The High Holidays seems like a long way away – but not so for the Honey Sale. The money we make will help to support the Religious School as well as other important projects that Sisterhood sponsors. Please look for the flyer in this issue of The Voice. Barbara Druckman, Executive Vice President, and Jackie Sherman, Vice President of Programming, are planning fabulous luncheons and programs. Unfortunately, we had to cancel some programs this past spring, but we will reschedule them for this coming season. Until we can get back into the Temple, the Judaica Shop is closed. Carol Wolfe, who does the ordering for our Judaica Shop, had ordered wonderful new items for the shop before we closed. None of them have been displayed, so please give us some time to unpack them when we open. Please check the Temple’s emails to see when our “Honey from the Heart” will begin. Last year’s program was a big success and we know that this year’s honey sale will be as well. Please take care and stay healthy.

Our deep appreciation to the women who had served on the 2019-2020 Board and are leaving the board. We thank them for their dedicated service: Marcy Aizenshtat (Recording Secretary) Leslie Feldman (Assistant Vice President of Membership) Fran Nossen (Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer) Debbe Schertzer (Vice President of Fundraising) Helen Weinfeld (Book Bag Chair and Past Sisterhood President, and much more!)

TIKKUN OLAM

Tikkun Olam Council Chair Ken Goldstein Repairing the World: Now More Than Ever I hope that you and your family are well and staying safe in this new world of ours. While we are still adjusting to our new environment, some things remain the same. Our commitment at the TOC to social action and social justice remains critical as we work together to help those in need. “Repairing the World” is in our name…the Tikkun Olam Council. Our mission is “To assist in, enhance and advance opportunities for members of all ages of Temple Shalom to participate in and fulfill their obligations of Tikkun Olam and of promoting Social Action and Social Justice.” At a recent meeting we identified four broad areas to focus our goals for the coming year…First, goals involving our Temple Shalom family. Second, goals affecting our community here in Southwest Florida, Third, goals within our nation and finally fourth, goals within our world. We are already involved to some degree in all four areas but we can do more.

For Temple Shalom, Mitzvah Day need not be only one day a year. What can we do with some more Mitzvah days during the year? For our community here in Southwest Florida the environment and voting issues immediately come to mind. Food insecurity is another. How can we make a difference? At a national level the environment and voting are critical issues as well. The Religious Action Center (RAC) has advocacy projects for these issues as well as economic justice, civil rights and public health. How can we add our voices to these important issues? Beyond our own borders, how can we expand our support for Jews in Russia, Belarus and the Ukraine? The TOC will be working on setting goals for next year. If you have an interest in any of these areas please join us. For more information contact Ken Goldstein at kengoldstein@ mac.com.

Need A Vote-By-Mail Ballot? Every state allows vote-by-mail however, the rules governing this process vary by state. Due to the coronavirus, these rules may change. For information on your state’s current vote-by-mail rules, please visit this page on the usa.gov site. Collier County residents can find more information here.
