RABBI’S MESSAGE
Rabbi
Adam F. Miller
A joint message from R abbi Miller and Cantor A zu On Kol Nidre, Rabbi Miller shared the story of his first day in Driver’s Education class. The instructor asked, “Do you know what the hardest thing is to learn while driving?” After Rabbi Miller replied in the negative, the instructor said, “Knowing how and when to change lanes. We will start there.” He pointed ahead, and Rabbi Miller realized that he had turned onto an entrance for the highway. Day 1 of Driver’s Education - 55 miles per hour and changing lanes! While the instructor could have given more preparation, the lesson from that day remains true. Whether on the road, or in life, we all need to be prepared to change lanes when obstacles present themselves in our way, or we realize that a different lane is required to reach our desired destination. This year witnessed many changes and moments of transition in our Temple Family. Our Family grew by leaps and bounds, reaching almost 740 households by the end of the year, representing 50% growth in a two-year period! With good reason, we honored Gene and Bobbie Katz, two of our greatest ambassadors for our One Family. We joyously welcomed Deborah Fidel, our Executive Director, and noted the changes to our synagogue operations and communications (like the new Voice!). Lifecycle transitions included celebrating with the seventeen young men and women who reached the milestone of bar/bat mitzvah, as well as the three women who became adult b’not mitzvah, several baby namings and brisses, as well as weddings among Temple members and their extended families. The first Melton class graduated with 24 adults completing the three-year study process of furthering their Jewish literacy and education. And, in an historic moment, our congregation overwhelmingly voted to embrace the change at our campus and the Jewish community of Southwest Florida by welcoming the Jewish Federation of Collier County to construct their new facility on our land. As much as we plan for the future, some changes occur without warning. We note the unplanned transitions from the past year as we mourned the passing of Temple family and friends. Our staff changed with the unexpected departures of Dr. Anna Salomon, Director of Congregational Education and Peter Lewis, Musical Director. Responding to these changes, Susan Feld came on board as our Interim Religious School Director, 3

and Jim Cochran joined as the Musical Director. Their talents and skillsets lifted our Temple, with positive impacts on our young families and worship experience respectively. Most significantly, we all felt the change in atmosphere with the tragedy at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. In the wake of that horrific event, our community rallied to host the Shabbat of Solidarity at Temple Shalom that brought more than 1800 from across our greater community to mourn with the people of Pittsburgh, stand up against hatred, and be united for creating a better tomorrow. When faced with difficult situations, we followed the adage of Mark Twain, “Eat a live frog first thing in the morning, and nothing worse will happen the rest of your day.” In other words, one should not shy away from difficult moments. Recognizing the growth in our community over recent years, our leadership invested significant time and resources into evaluating our education program from the youngest to the young at heart to determine if we are meeting the needs of this dynamic congregation. This process resulted in a study of our Temple Shalom Preschool that will strengthen that important part of our Temple program, and the recognition that our membership growth requires additional clergy on staff. The next Director of Congregational Learning will be a Rabbi Educator or Cantor Educator, equipped to engage our community in meaningful Jewish educational experiences, and provide necessary pastoral care and lifecycle support to the congregation. This has indeed been a year of change, a year of celebration, and a year of thoughtful transition leading us to a better tomorrow. We look forward to the bright future ahead for our congregation, ready to embrace the changes we anticipate, and those we do not. Together we will fulfill the mission of Temple Shalom to engage the Jewish community of today, to transform our youth into the menschen for tomorrow, and to make our world more whole and holy. L’shalom, Rabbi Adam Miller & Cantor Donna Azu

LEADERSHIP MESSAGE
Executive Director Deborah R. Fidel
They say that time flies when you’re having fun – well, this year zoomed by in the blink of an eye!! I can’t believe that I am marking my first anniversary as the Temple Shalom Executive Director already. Working with our lay leaders on the Executive Committee, Board of Trustees, and committees this year has been a true pleasure and privilege. I also want to take this opportunity to thank our amazing staff that supports not only the clergy and me but goes out of their way to support each and every member of this community; they work as a team with grace and efficiency every day. Under our Communications Director, Jeanette Fischer’s leadership, we launched a new website that is easier to navigate, restyled the weekly Shabbat Shalom handout, introduced a new membership brochure, revamped the weekly emails and condolence notices, and designed a new logo for the preschool. She has championed the integration of our website, calendar, event registrations and much more into a single web-based application, giving us an opportunity for increased efficiency, automation, and access to events and information all in one place. The most exciting change in our communications this year, however, was our reformatted monthly magazine, “The Voice.” Rolled out last fall, our glossy periodical is full of interesting articles and useful information in an easy to read and beautiful format. The great reviews and increased revenue from advertising keep coming. She is also the keeper of the schedule and made sure that the 1300 (!) separate events at Temple this year did not bump into each other. Ana Maria Tamargo, our Membership and Engagement Concierge has worked with 96 new member families to help them integrate into our OneFamily this year! She reimagined our membership application to be more welcoming and inclusive. Those on the misheberach list received friendly phone calls from her, wishing a full and speedy recovery. If you enjoyed the Scholar-in-Residence weekend with Edwin Black, a potluck dinner, new member wine and cheese or the beautiful Congregational seder, you have Ana Maria and her excellent planning and exceptional attention to the smallest details to thank. Our Controller, Maxine Gould, has taken on some big new challenges this year! She has enthusiastically embraced our office’s transition from one financial database to another and from Sage 50 accounting to QuickBooks. And I could not have prepared the budget for the Finance Committee without her assistance. Her support for the 2019 Gala, Silent Auction, Finance Committee, Investment Committee and collaboration with our Treasurer were invaluable. Maxine also played an important role in the selection of our new and much improved health insurance program for Temple employees. As our congregation has expanded, our Receptionist, Julie Fischer and Rabbi Miller’s Assistant, Randi Butterworth’s contributions to the smooth operations of the Temple grew apace. Without their steady hands, and behind-thescenes support for our clergy team and office staff, we would not be able to function as a true kehillah kedosha (sacred community). They continue to amaze me with the way they get their work done every day - no matter what comes their way - without fuss or fanfare. In addition to answering anywhere from 35 to 50 phone calls every day, Julie has brought her energy and creativity to our Facebook page and Twitter account. Like us and Follow us to join the online conversation. We welcomed Shayna Aronson to our staff in January as the Development Coordinator. What a difference she has made 5
LEADERSHIP MESSAGE already! The 2019 Night of Inspiration Gala and Silent Auction kickoff event exceeded our every expectation. With her help, we have applied for several new grants in the short time that she has been with us. Thanks to her diligence, creative problem solving and some very long days that turned into evenings, our fundraising efforts have reached new heights. If you were in Naples this year for one month or twelve, you know that our building was humming with activity almost every single day. In addition to our own programs, we were proud to host many other organizations’ events all throughout the year. The increase in membership and activities kept Facilities Manager, Victor Lucas and his team, Pedro Cruz, Rick Holsbeke, Ada Rossell, Wilson Mejia, Karla Cheves, and Lourdes Obando working hard day in and day out to keep our building and property clean, comfortable and safe. Victor’s help was indispensable to me when we applied for and received a grant to better secure our building against intruders. He has also worked with me to upgrade our wifi, revise and update a number of our policies and procedures related to building use and rentals, and advised the Finance Committee on capital expenses and planning. It is impossible to quantify what it means to live in relationship to others, or to feel transformed by an experience. Even though numbers only tell a fraction of the story, the numbers in this report are my attempt to quantify the ways that we lived our values as a congregational family over the past year. Collectively, the data points within this report only reflect a sliver of the breadth and depth of programming, spirit and relationship building that happens all year long at Temple Shalom. As you read this retrospective look on the year that passed, I hope that you will be feel much of the same pride in what we have accomplished together and gratitude to all the people who have made it all happen. I look forward to celebrating many more successes with you and our Temple Shalom family.
President
Debra Antzis It has been a very busy year! In July, we welcomed a new Executive Director, Deborah Fidel, to Temple Shalom. Deborah is has done a fantastic job in her first year with us, while getting to know our members and our communi-ty. She is a great addition to our team and we are lucky to have her. In August, Dr. Anna Solomon informed us that she would be resigning from her position as Director of Congregational Education in order to move closer to her family in Ohio. While we were very sorry to see Dr. Solomon go, we are grateful for her leadership and guidance while she was with us. Many thanks to Susan Feld, who became Interim Director of the Religious School on very short no-tice and has been doing a fantastic job at it, with the help of our amazing religious school teachers. Thanks as well to Rabbi Miller, Cantor Azu, and a committee of volunteers who ensured that Temple Shalom’s Adult Education programs continued uninterrupted. Mindful that our Temple family has grown considerably since we first hired Dr. Solomon, I asked Third Vice President 6
LEADERSHIP MESSAGE Ed Kaufman to evaluate what Temple Shalom’s current needs are prior to beginning a search for a new educator. After extensive research, meetings and evaluation, Ed and his committee recommended that Temple Shalom seek to hire a Clergy/Educator, and the Board approved this recommendation. The Clergy/Educator’s primary function will be to be Director of Temple Shalom’s Religious School and Adult Education programs. He or she will also be able to assist Rabbi Miller and Cantor Azu with clergy functions. A search committee is in the process of evaluating and interviewing candidates, and we plan to fill the position prior to the start of the next school year. In December, our membership overwhelmingly approved leasing the western-most parcel of land owned by Temple Shalom to the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples, and Temple and Federation are moving forward together on this project. We’ve had several joint meetings, some with representatives of Collier County, to discuss the proposed building and the many related issues, including security, traffic, parking, renovations, to name a few. Federation hopes to break ground on the third parcel to begin construction within a year. With the Board of Trustees’ approval, in January I asked former Board member Daniel Spintman to chair a governance committee, to review how Temple Shalom functions and recommend improvements and changes to our decision making and management process. The committee (including, in addition to Dan, Daryl Sissman, John Little, and Deborah Fidel) has begun its work, and this project will progress over time with the end result being a better-run Temple Shalom. Thanks to the committee members for their commitment to this worthy goal. Also in January, we welcomed Shayna Aronson as our new Development Coordinator. Like Deborah, Shayna immediately began adding value to our team, especially in helping Gala co-chairs Arlene and Don Shapiro, Harriet and Merlin Lickhalter, and Daryl and David Sissman with preparations for our fantastic fundraising Gala in March. It was an outstanding evening, honoring Bobbie and Gene Katz, with innovative art and entertainment. In addition, all Temple members were invited to a pre-Gala cocktail party at Temple the week before. The items to be auctioned at Temple Shalom’s first-ever online silent auction were displayed at the party, so that all could see up close what they would be bidding on electronically. Temple Shalom Preschool’s growth over the last several years has been dynamic, and we are so grateful to Preschool Director Seyla Cohen, who has been the guiding force there for so many years, with the dedicated assistance of Gloria Mellman and our fantastic staff of preschool teachers. To help protect what Seyla and Gloria and our teachers have built, and with an eye to the Preschool’s future, at the end of February the Board engaged a Preschool consultant to work with Seyla to re-view our preschool policies and procedures, and to put together a strategic plan for its future. When Temple Shalom changed from a dues-based model to the L’Shalom pledge system two years ago, we experienced a growth spurt, and I am happy to report that our growth is continuing, at a more moderate pace. Temple Shalom now has approximately 730 member families, which is an increase of about 80 over last year at this time. Financially, L’Shalom continues to be a successful means of support for the Temple. Many thanks to all of you for pledging what is needed to keep the Temple on firm fiscal ground. I am also deeply grateful to all our generous donors for supporting Temple Shalom. Whether you have given to Above and Beyond, supported our fabulous Gala in March, made donations to one or more of the Temple’s funds in honor of a special occasion or in memory of a loved one, you helped Temple Shalom continue to move forward into the future in a fiscally responsible way. Thanks as well to the members of our finance and fundraising steering committees for the excellent work they have done in this regard. Finally, in addition to all the people specifically named above, I’d like to thank all who have worked hard for Temple Shalom over the past year and who have not yet been mentioned: The Board of Trustees, Sisterhood, Men’s Club, all volunteers and committee chairs and committee members, Rabbi Miller, Cantor Azu, and all of Temple Shalom’s support staff including Maxine Gould, Jeanette Fischer, Victor Lucas, Randi Butterworth, Ana Maria Tamargo, Julie Fischer, Rick Holsbecke, Ada Rousell and Pedro Cruz. It is the people of Temple Shalom who make it what it is, and I am grateful that we are in this together. 7

Religious School Report Susan Feld, Ed.S.
Temple Shalom Religious School is the program that brings families together for the purpose of embracing Judaism for their children. This year the focus was on engaging families and parents along with the students in Judaic projects, prayers, and programs. All ages of students met on Sunday mornings, and third – sixth graders met for Hebrew School either on Sundays or Wednesdays. The curriculum, Chai: Learning for Jewish Life was implemented with weekly lessons on Torah, Avodah, G’milut Chasadim, and family education. The core of the curriculum enables students to draw connections between Judaism and their lives. For Hebrew studies, the teaching staff have developed creative strategies and current methods to teach an ancient language and make it meaningful to 21st century students. Students learned to develop a fluency with Hebrew prayers, understanding the content and translation, and explored different melodies for the prayers. This year the sixth grade curriculum was revised for inclusion of studying the Holocaust during the spring semester. Students participated in classroom learning, toured the Holocaust Museum, visited the World War II boxcar, listened to a presentation on the Irena Sendler Project as well as a presentation from a second-generation survivor, and interviewed local Holocaust survivors. Learning was based on age appropriate practices and culminated in written essay projects, excerpts of which were read at the Yom HaShoah Observance. Family programming in Religious School encompassed a wide variety of activities which included the students and parents creating a Seder plate in one grade, making a beaded Yad in another grade, planting seeds for Tu B’Shevat in another, and writing personal notes for a Siddur in yet another grade level. Family Shabbat Experiences were enthusiastically popular this year with parents, grandparents, and children all enjoying a Shabbat meal together and engaged in handson activities. The experiences featured programming for grades K – 6 but all ages were welcomed. After participating in the activities and having a delicious dinner featuring Michelbob’s buffet, families participated in Shabbat services. High quality professional development was presented to the teaching staff this past spring. Rabbi Adam Miller spoke on “From Sinai to Seder”, teaching how our modern day Seder was imagined through the Mishnah. Dr. Kelly Roy, department head at Florida SouthWestern College, spoke on “Teaching Strategies and Active Learning.” At the end of the school year all teaching staff participated in a self-reflection exercise and evaluation of teaching approaches, R egistration for the 2019-2020 school year is now open. Temple Shal m Preschool
Planting seeds in the minds of our future.
Dear Temple Family, I am pleased to announce that Susan Feld has been engaged by the Temple Shalom Board of Trustees to serve as Interim Director for the Temple Shalom Preschool. Miss Seyla has expressed her confidence in Susan as a highly qualified educator and experienced professional, and the two will work together through the end of Seyla’s tenure. Susan has dedicated her entire career to working in the field of early childhood education. She holds an undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education, a master’s degree in Elementary Education, and a doctoral degree in Instruction and Curriculum Leadership in Early Childhood. After a career that began as a classroom teacher, Susan moved into administration, serving many years as the Director of a nationally accredited preschool. Most recently she worked as a consultant, guiding preschools through periods of leadership transition, and currently serves as an adjunct professor at Florida SouthWestern College in the early childhood department. I look forward, together with the Temple Shalom Board of Trustees, clergy and staff, to working together with Susan in maintaining the nurturing atmosphere that makes the preschool the most amazing program in Southwest Florida. L’Shalom, Debra Antzis, President

Havurah Happenings
This last year we have seen a lot of growth in our Havurot. Ana Maria Tamargo, Membership Engagement Coordinator and I have held several meetings with members of the Congregation interested in learning more about being in a Havurah. This last year we have formed 6 new Havurot. While many of them are comprised of new members, we Temple Shalom is blessed with hundreds and hundreds of have older members that have joined as well. We now have a members, many of whom come to Friday evening Shabbat Singles Havurah as well as one Havurah that has formed as a services. We also usually have several guests and visitors result of being in a Melton class together for 3 years and felt this was a way to continue their friendship circle. joining us each week as well. There is a group of volunteers at the Temple, Shalom If you want to know more about being in a Havurah, stop in Chaverim, whose function is to greet people as they come the office and see Ana Maria. We are always forming new to the Temple for Shabbat services. We greet people at the groups. front sidewalk, in the lobby where we say Shabbat Shalom and welcome and help people with their name badges, and in the sanctuary, assisting with seating, prayer books, hearing devices. Being a greeter on Friday evenings is a wonderful way to get to know everyone - to put faces with names. It is surprising how many people will remember your name as well, whether in the Temple, at Publix, or at your favorite restaurant. Temple Shalom receives a lot of feedback from new members, guests and visitors about how welcoming and friendly a Congregation we are. And we are! We are a congregation dedicated to “Audacious Hospitality” and to helping our members and guests connect and engage. Being part of Shalom Chaverim is fun and you will be making a difference to all of those visiting our Temple by helping to make their experience at Temple Shalom warm and welcoming. Some of our greeters are at the temple every week, others are there when they are able. If you would like to receive more information, please contact me at andy.karpman@gmail. com or at 239-331-2624 to talk about the benefits of being part of Shalom Chaverim. See you at shul, Andy Karpman

SISTERHOOD
Sisterhood President Karen Cohn Sisterhood R eport Sisterhood had a terrific year. Our luncheons were very well attended with more than 50 Sisterhood members and nonmembers attending each month, thanks to Barbara Druckman, Programming Vice-President. We stayed at Temple Shalom this year. Our speakers included Mark Danni from Theatre Zone, Ron Frazer from CROW, and Cantor Faid Dardashti. Jim Sernowitz presented a slide show and lecture of his travel at a joint luncheon with the Men’s Club. We also had a fashion show from Chico’s. Our fabulous Fundraiser was a Man Jongg tournament. Debbe Schertzer, Fundraising Vice-President, and Bunny Kaufman worked with their committee to make this happen. Lynn Prosten, Membership Vice President, had several “New Member” wine and cheese evenings which were very successful. Book Bag was also very successful with Helen Weinfeld at the helm. Her facilitators were exceptional, as usual. We sponsored the Jewish Book Festival which had a sold-out crowd. Susan Pittleman was in charge. The Oneg Committee, as always, did a bang-up job with Sandy Stone, Chef, and Karen Cohn, Barbara Druckman, Debbe Schertzer, Shelly Baron, and Ellie Canter the sous chefs. The Judaica Shop is getting some new faces this year. Judi Spitman and I are stepping back a little. We will still be around if needed. Carol Wolf is taking over the ordering. The purpose of Sisterhood is to help the Religious School financially. We fund-raise and give the school $15,000 annually. We gave $1,500 to the RAC trip to Washington, D.C. with the Rabbi. We also share the expense with the Temple for the beautiful tablecloths we now use. Sisterhood had a remarkable year. These women all worked together with one major goal in mind - to help the Temple in any way it can.
2019 Volunteer of the Year is Lynn Prosten. 2019 Woman of Valor is Barbara Druckman.
The Sisterhood is looking for a few volunteers to help out in the Judaica shop. Do you have 2 ½ hours one or two mornings a week to help staff the Judaica Shop? No experience necessary. We will train you. Please contact K aren Cohn at 239-370-6220 for more information. 27
ENDOWMENT CORNER
With a completed endowment gift of $10,000 or more you will become a member of our
Eternal Light society.
Why does Temple need Endowments? A special thanks to those of you who have made and are making tribute gifts to endowments, and especially to those who created new endowment funds in memory or honor of loved ones. We have eight funds of $10,000 or more – three of over $100,000 each - created since 2014. If all of our members followed these examples of leadership and commitment to our future, we could be well on our way to achieving our $10 million goal –potentially contributing $400,000 annually (4%) to pay for the wonderful things Temple does! Members’ voluntary annual commitments (formerly dues) cover only about 70% of our expenses, as is the case for most synagogues. Today as in past years, annual Above & Beyond and special fundraising events like the recent Gala are used to cover the 30% shortfall in expenses. In the long term, endowment funds can offer an enduring source of revenue generation that will grow and enable us thoughtfully and strategically to manage our current and future needs. If we have another economic downturn, as happens periodically, or a personal setback, many donors may not be able to make their usual generous annual gifts. That is when the earnings on our Temple endowment investments can be tapped to generate the income needed to meet our shortfall. Just as in our own families, if we lack savings to tide us over the bad times, we might have to borrow or do without many of the things that are important in our lives – and the life of the Temple. Today we are not using the earnings on our endowments to pay for Temple expenses. Instead, just as with our personal retirement accounts, we reinvest the earnings on our investments, so that they will be there for us when we need to use them. Our Temple Shalom Endowment Committee members stand ready to show you how to find the right opportunity to meet your personal goals through giving now or in the future, whether it’s a one-time gift of real estate, stock or cash, or a pledge to be paid over several years. You may be able to name your own fund or make a dedicated gift. Please call me at 239-450-8112 so that I can answer your questions and get you started. -Suzanne Low, J.D., CFP®, Endowment Chair

You will become a member of our Legacy Society with your signed letter of intent to make a gift in the future.

TIKKUN OLAM
Tikkun Olam Council Chair Ken Goldstein The “Season” is Over: A Time to R eflect Life in Southwest Florida changes with the arrival of summer. Less traffic on the roads, less crowded at the beaches and no problem getting dinner reservations or a tee time at a great golf course. Rain in the afternoons, and maybe naps in the afternoon as well. But it’s also a time to reflect on our obligations to perform Tikkun Olam or “repairing the world.” We have serious issues facing us. Antisemitism is on the rise around the world, gun violence continues to take the lives of thousands of people each year, rising temperatures and melting glaciers are concrete evidence of climate change, many people cannot afford basic healthcare and nearly 30 million people live in poverty right here in America. How do we balance enjoying our lives with family and friends and still find ways to meet our obligation of Tikkun Olam? I recently came across a quote by Rabbi Rick Jacobs. Here is what he wrote: “For us, being religious is not about being dogmatic, intolerant or unchanging. It’s about living a life of depth and commitment. It shapes who we are and leads us to build just communities, which in turn shape a more just, compassionate and whole world.” We have the ability to “build just communities” by making a commitment to support social action and social justice. There are many ways; volunteering at a local senior center, hospital or food bank, joining a social action committee or getting involved politically by supporting legislation that protects our rights. If you think big, maybe even running for office one day!. Whether we help just one person or thousands of people, we are making a difference. We are helping to build “just communities” and a more “…just, compassionate and whole world.” For more information about the Tikkun Olam Council” (TOC) please contact K en Goldstein at kengoldstein@mac.com.

The Israel Scouts Friendship Caravan is made up of five girls, five boys and two Caravan leaders from all over Israel. In order to be in the Caravan, these teenagers (16 and 17 years old) went through a highly competitive selection process and were chosen based on their maturity, fluency in English, and performance skills. Scouting is big in Israel, with over 60,000 members. Those chosen to participate here are selected for their ability to best represent the State of Israel. As Israeli delegates, these teens have a love for Israel and a desire to share that with North Americans. The Scouts spend the 10 weeks of summer performing in synagogues and churches, schools and summer camps, even nursing homes – wherever people want to share their love for Israel.
